Leightons is the sole contractor at the Wahana Coal Mine Project (part of the Bayan Group), a multi-seam thermal deposit consisting of 13 coal seams with thicknesses ranging from 20 cm to 500 cm. The average dip of the deposit is 18 - 20°. However the deposit is heavily faulted in certain domains with anticlinal and synclinal structures present causing seams to dip up to 90°. Average thickness of coal inter-burdens range from less than 2 to 12 m. The minimum coal thickness being mined is 20 cm. Coal production is direct mine mouth feed and there is no coal processing plant currently used.Conventional blasting between the highly variable coal horizons in the early phases of the mine life was suboptimal from a production perspective. Drilling short holes with a reduced drill pattern, and on occasions with sloping benches, resulted in low drilling and explosives loading efficiency.A high frequency of small size blasts fired up to two times daily was required with each blast consisting of four up to five small blast areas. Each blast averaged approximately 36 000 bcm thus causing a low utilisation rate of the mining fleet from frequent blast delays and the inability to deploy larger Liebherr 9350 excavators on bench. It was identified that increasing the production targets required a more efficient drilling and blasting process. Furthermore, due to the highly variable nature of the deposit, the existing coal model was determined to not be able to accurately predict the coal seam location prior to blasthole drilling.In August 2009, Leighton Contractors Indonesia and Orica Mining Services with the full support of the Wahana team, initiated through seam blasting trials using electronic blasting systems. Further trials were conducted in November 2009. Trial evaluations indicated that the benefits from decreased lost time events due to blasting, an increased vertical advance rate per blast, and increased overall blast size could be attained while not damaging or diluting coal.Full-scale?through seam blasting has been ongoing since February 2010 for the upper eight coal seams to extract coal seam thicknesses ranging from 20 - 100 cm. This paper will discuss the parameters of the through seam blasting process in Wahana and the resulting benefits to the overall mine production.

Mr. Chairman, Fellow Keynoters, Ladies, and Gentlemen: It is purposed to consider the theme of this meeting, "The 1970's - Pivotal Decade for the Mineral Industries," from the particular -- some would say peculiar -- point of view of one engaged in mineral engineering education, and this coign of vantage prompts the textbookish subtitle, "Problems and Solutions (?) in Undergraduate Mineral Engineering Education." Three interrelated problems, or problem areas, will be presented and discussed, and where solutions seem to be emerging or seem worthy to be suggested, they will be identified. The three problems are: 1. The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the undergraduate curricula are in question, 2. The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges, and 3. The social ambience of the day affects for the worse the work attitudes and the career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. The Need. - Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development, and production levels, Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of our society and profession. The latter reference is, of course, to the current work of the National Commission on Materials Policy (U.S.A.) under the executive directorship of Dr. James Boyd. Since the turn of the century the mining industry in the United States has had a number of serious mine explosions, fires and ground fall disasters that have led to a major re-evaluation of mine communication and rescue practices. One of the hindrances of current underground communication technologies is the potential of lost or cut connections when a serious accident, such as an explosion, fire, inundation or major ground fall, takes place. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act)1 mandated that each underground coal mine in the U.S. must provide for two-way wireless, post-accident communications between underground and surface personnel as well as electronic tracking of underground workers One area that has gained renewed attention in the mining sector is Through-The-Earth (TTE) communication. TTE technology has a major advantage in that transceiver devices can be carried by miners and set up quickly during an emergency, since they require no wire connection to the surface. TTE technology uses ultra-low frequency (1 to 4 kHz) electromagnetic waves, requiring relatively large wire loop antennas and highly sensitive receivers. The signal bandwidth is narrow and the permissible antenna currents in coal mines are restricted, which has led to limited usability of TTE technology in the past, as evidenced in research studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s. Yenchek (2012)2 pointed out that recent advances in receiver and signal processing technology have enabled voice and text communication capabilities and much improved sensitivity that offers new possibilities for TTE communication in mining applications. One company that has been developing such technology is Vital Alert Communication Inc. Vital Alert has been providing TTE communications since 2003 with a growing focus on emergency response and portable systems. The company?s Canary® Go System is one such product that looks to provide reliable communication capabilities in a portable, user friendly unit that can be utilized both for normal operation and mine rescue scenarios. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have tested the Canary Go TTE communications system in the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine to determine signal propagation distances, signal quality and aspects of practical application.

"SUMMARYSeamounts are underwater mountains caused by volcanic activity. They are of great oceanographic interest because of their local and basin-scale influence over ocean systems, their often unique ecosystems, and because they are associated with the formation of ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts. These crusts are of particular interest to scientists because they are rich in some of the rare elements increasingly required for development of renewable technologies. When the possibility of mining such seamounts is considered, an inter-disciplinary study of seamount hydrodynamics, crust formation and ecosystem sensitivity is required. MarineE-tech is one such multi-disciplined project that has been commissioned to address these different aspects in order to improve understanding of the viability and desirability of mining Fe-Mn crusts. This paper describes a key part of this study, namely the development of a model, informed by hydrographic observations, of the currents around one such seamount and the in situ validation of a sediment disturbance plume model as a pre-cursor to assessment of the potential effects of mining activity.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese crusts are thought to form by precipitation of iron and manganese oxides from oxygen depleted mid-water known as the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Oxidation rich waters, typically at depths of about 800-2200 m (Hein et al, 2000). This range of depths coincides with the flanks and summits of many seamounts. The ferromanganese crusts found on seamounts have been found to have high concentrations of rare elements, like Tellurium, that are considered critical to low-carbon energy production. Seamounts are complex environments: in terms of the local hydrodynamics that tend to trap water over the seamount due to the Taylor Cap effect (e.g. Chapman and Haidvogel, 1992) and which can enhance the productivity of seamount waters through upwelling (Lavelle and Mohn, 2010), in terms of the microbiological activity that leads to the precipitation of the Fe-Mn crusts, and also in terms of the often unique ecosystems that are the product of the “island” nature of seamounts and the upwelling of nutrients. The understanding of this complexity is a necessary journey towards the realization of viable, yet environmentally responsible, mining schemes. The formation of crusts will be influenced by the local (and larger-scale) hydrodynamics. The exploration of promising crust sites could be made much more efficient by understanding where the most prospective deposits are likely to occur. Knowing how to remove these crusts without impacting significantly on the local environment will be a pre-requisite for such mining to be acceptable to the public and funders alike."

A new innovation in coal mine roof support has been developed by the Bureau of Mines at the Denver Research Center. The technique, called "Thrust Bolting,"1 converts a traditional passive roof support system, a full or partial column rebar bolt, into an active support system by following a specific installation process. The thrust bolting system provides two advantages from a ground control standpoint. First, because the system is active, no roof movement is necessary to put the bolt into tension. This eliminates the possibility of strata separations in sedimentary roots, minimizing progressive-type roof failures. Secondly, the tension placed on the system is independent of mechanical devices or torques. This eliminates the highly variable frictional losses that occur between the bearing plate and the bolt head and in the threaded portions of traditional active support systems. These two improvements create a safer working environment for mining personnel. An additional advantage of this improved support system is the reduced cost of installation and maintenance. The initial support cost is reduced by a minimum of 30 percent per bolt when compared to similar conventional support systems. The labor intensive and potentially hazardous torque¬tension test, required for most tensionable active support systems, is not required for thrust bolts. The potential for improved support performance and cost reduction of thrust bolting has generated a considerable amount of interest from both industry and MSHA. This paper will describe, in detail, the theory and application of thrust bolting and present the results of two underground coal mine case studies.

The Thunderbird plant was erected in Sullivan County in Indiana during 1958-1959. It was first put in operation in March of 1959. At the present time the source of the raw coal is from the Indiana No. 6 seam. The underground operation at present consists of two continuous mining units and two conventional units. The underground is all belt haulage and the first unit with which this paper is concerned is the slope belt. It is a 48-inch-wide inclined belt with 980-foot centers and a lift of 275 feet. The belt is powered with a 350 H, P, motor and has a rated capacity of 600 Tons per Hour. The belt is equipped with a Merrick Scale Company Weightometer, The raw coal moves from the belt to a 6'x12' extra heavy Allis-Chalmers Ripl-Flo equipped with 6" round-hole screens. The over product of the screen is fed into a 10'x20' long McNally- Pittsburg rotary breaker equipped with 4-l/2" round-hole screens. The oversize rock is discharged into a bin that is emptied with a refuse truck. The through-product of the breaker, along with the through-product of the Ripl-Flo, passes either directly to the McNally Giant washbox or to a 36" belt that transports it to a 1000-ton storage bin,' The change from either to the washbox or to the storage bin is made by use of a motorized gate controlled by the plant operator,

Despite the attention belatedly bestowed on tidal power in recent years, it remains largely a potential rather than an actual source of energy. The resource is, practically speaking, non-depletable. Extraction is technically feasible and environmentally acceptable. The restraints against development are economic, and they could be removed by technical improvements, changes in the cost or availability of other energy sources, or simply by a change in the cost of money. The exponential rise in the demand for energy makes it inevitable that the tides will be harnessed sooner or later.

"This paper shows that smooth and accurate feed-hopper level control is essential for consistent cone crusher operation. The objective of the paper is to define the best practices for tight control of cone crusher feed-hopper level. The paper discusses the challenges involved in a delay-dominant level control problem (specifically, dead-time-induced performance and stability issues, mass flow disturbances, process and actuator non-linearity) and proposes five corresponding control structures. The performance of the proposed control structure candidates is evaluated in a simulation study and, finally, a full-scale experiment is conducted for the best-performing candidate. The results of this study emphasize the importance of control structure selection. While the most obvious control structures failed to deliver the desired performance, the best result was achieved by using control structures that eliminate the conveyor transport delay (dead-time) from the control loop. In practice, the control loop dead-time can be eliminated by either using an actuator (variable-speed feed conveyor) that is connected directly to the feed-hopper, or by redefining the process boundaries closer to the used actuator (regulate the circuit mass balance instead of feed-hopper level). The presented control structures provide means to achieve a consistent cone crusher performance and size reduction. This facilitates efforts to improve the plant’s performance and increases the plant’s overall stability."

The concept of using specially designed slot blasts to mine through stress abutments that intersect faults, while controlling fault-slip seismicity, has come of age at Mt Charlotte Mine. Due to the high and adverse stress field and the presence of major faults, the mine is vulnerable to significant fault-slip seismicity. As mining proceeded, advancing stress abutments around various mined areas encroached on several major subvertical faults. If the sequence formed a diminishing pillar between stope and fault, the removal or failure of that pillar daylighted the fault, and often resulted in significant fault-slip seismicity. A new strategy called ‘Tight Slot Blasting’ (TSB) was developed to restrain or dampen this style of fault-slip movement. The TSB has geometric similarities to a conventional cut-off slot used to create stress shadows, but its function is different. Its objective is to trigger and control a sudden shift of the stress state on a fault from an initial stable state, through an unstable transition, to a second stable state. A TSB firing advances a long tall narrow slot through a stressed abutment between a stope void and a nearby fault, using a rapid blast with a low swell ratio, so that the slot substantially and rapidly fills with blasted rock fragments. During the blast process, the stressed rock is rapidly removed and transformed into the fragmented rock fill in the slot. The strategy deliberately allows a fault-slip episode to manifest at a chosen time and place. The tight-packed broken rock in the slot performs an essential shock-absorbing function by controlling the slip amount and rate on the fault, while at the same time the fill becomes compacted by the movement. This controls the dissipation of fault-slip energy, and greatly reduces the seismic response in time and space. A small closure across the slot occurs, with consequent relaxation and destressing of the adjacent rock mass. Stress monitoring data shows that slot creation lowers the abutment stress in the nearby rock mass, while the newly placed fragmented rock fill acts as a shock absorber, providing considerable resistance to substantial fault-slip movement that otherwise could deliver a significant seismic event. First used in 2007, the strategy has been refined to become a routine specialised practice for management of seismically hazardous situations at Mt Charlotte, with 12 successful TSBs conducted to date. Despite mining through multiple high stress abutments, seismic reactions have not exceeded ML 2.1 with any TSB firing, all remaining below the site tolerable maximum of ML 2.3. This paper presents an overview of the strategy, and five case examples of the strategy in critical stressed areas in July 2016, Sept 2017, Dec 2017 and two in Oct 2020. The strategy has successfully managed the seismicity and is expected to remain an essential part of the seismic management plan at Mt Charlotte Mine.

"As a contribution to understand the smelting of copper or nickel matte by blowing oxygen or oxygen-enriched air, the phase equilibrium and the distribution of minor elements between the iron-silicate based slag and the Cu2S-FeS or Ni3S2-FeS matte at 1573K were investigated in a magnesia crucible under controlled partial pressures of SO2 at 0.1, 0.5 and 1.atm. At a given matte grade, the solubility of copper in the slag was found to be independent of p5O2 while that of nickel was dependent on pSO2 and these behaviors were analysed thermodynainically based on a concept of oxidic and sulfidic dissolution of the components in the slag. When the matte grade was specified, the distribution ratios of X, defined as (wt pct X in slag)/(wt pct X in matte}, for As, Sb and Bi increased with increasing p5O2 while that for Ag was constant against p5O2.IntroductionA combination of intensive reactors with the use of oxygen or oxygen-.enriched air as the blowing gas has provided a number of improved copper and nickel smelting processes such as INCO-Flash, Outokumpu-Flash, Mitsubishi-Continuous and IBRC (top blown rotary converter) processes. Phase equilibrium and thermodynamic studies for the slag and the copper matte or the nickel matte under high partial pressure of SO2 are of practical importance for evaluating the behaviours of the related components in the oxygen-smelting.A series of experimental studies have been already conducted in a limited range of conditions for Pso2 around 0.1 atm, which corresponds to the smelting with air-Stowing [1-5]. However, there remain very few data on the phase equilibrium in the matteslag systems under higher partial pressures of SO2. Tavera and Davenport studied the phase equilibrium between the copper matte and fayalite slag phases under the partial pressure of SO2 controlled at 0.1 - 1 atrn but without controlling the partial pressures of sulfur and oxygen [6]. A potential diagram for the Cu-Fe-S-O-SiO2 system at 1523 - 1573K suggests that the partial pressure of S2 equilibrated with the matte and the fayalite slag with saturated SiO2 under the high SO2 pressure is considerably high at 10-4 - 10-2 atrn [7]. This condition must require controlling of p52 as well as Pso2, in the equilibrium experiments, otherwise, the equilibrium condition may be hardly attained due to the continuous flushing of sulfur from the system."

THE manufacture of charcoal in kilns was declared many years ago, after a series of experiments made in poorly constructed furnaces, to be unprofitable, and the subject is dismissed by most writers with the remark that in order to use the method economically the products of distillation, both liquid and gaseous, must be collected. It is asserted with truth that the number of kilns required for a large production of iron would be so great that it is doubtful whether any works would be justified in making the necessary outlay for their construction, but it can also be asserted with equal truth that for any such production in a given locality the use of charcoal as fuel would be equally unjustifiable. It appears to have been forgotten that there were other manufactures besides iron in which large amounts of charcoal were used, but these consumers seem to have been guided entirely by the results of the experiments of the iron men, who necessarily made the largest quantity of it. Some authors speak in a doubtful way of the quality of the charcoal produced, and a few concede that with great care good charcoal can be made in kilns, but that most of the workmen do not like kiln charcoal. This is the real secret of the opposition to this method of manufacture. Most of these objections were written when charcoal was the most important fuel used by the iron manufacturer, and when what was a large production of iron for several furnaces was less than that produced by a single modern one, in localities where other fuels can be had. Almost all that has been written on the subject related to the use of the fuel for the manufacture of iron in the blast furnace, where very peculiar properties are required, and where the quantity produced is limited by the height of the furnace, and this in turn by the crushing resistance of the charcoal. A large production was, therefore, only possible when the best and hardest woods were used. Of all these objections there is not a single one which is not equally applicable to any method of charcoal manufacture, whether it be meilers, pits, or furnaces. "Abstract- The Ontario Geological Survey completed a regional till sampling project between 1984 and 1988 in the Black River Matheson (BRiM) area of northeastern Ontario. The project was designed to aid mineral exploration in the area by documenting the Quatemary stratigraphy and by providing a database of till geochemistry. This paper summarizes the results from the sonic overburden drilling component of the BRiM project carried out in areas of thick drift (> 5 m). Results from till sampling in areas of thinner drift (<5 m) have been presented in a separate paper. Approximately 1100 till samples were collected from 225 sonic drill holes. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (> 3.3 S.G.) and fine (-250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically and visible gold grains were recovered by panning.Gold and other multielement geochemical data were plotted using proportional symbols to high­ light anomalous areas and to demonstrate how to evaluate and interpret a very large geochemical dataset. Thresholds for identifying anomalous concentrations of Au in till samples, defined using the 95th percentile, are 1500 ppb and 12 ppb for the heavy mineral and fine fractions, respectively. The heavy mineral fraction of older tills and to a lesser extent, Matheson Till, display a number of significant gold anomalies in the study area, which in a few cases, are associated with base metal anomalies. The vertical position of gold anomalies in Matheson and older tills varies from directly on bedrock to several meters above the bedrock surface and can provide information of relative ice transport distances."

A program of geochemical till prospecting, carried out by Derry, Michener & Booth in 1974, was instrumental in t~ e discovery of a copper deposit in Currie Township, Ontario, beneath thick lacustrine deposits of the Abitibi Clay Belt. The prospecting system involved the continuous collection of glacial sands and gravels beneath the clays, using a track-mounted, dual-tube rotary drill, and the separation and geochemical analysis of the heavy mineral content for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag and Au. In one of 22 holes drilled down-ice from nine Canadian Nickel airborne EM conductors, fragments of chalcopyrite-bearing graphitic argillite, assaying 12% Cu, were recovered from a 14-foot gravel section beneath 83 feet of clay. Ultimately, mineralization was identified in 10 of 11 additional holes drilled up to 3,000 feet down-ice from the Currie deposit. The glacial fan, when compared to the 1,200- by 165-ft area of the subcropping mineralization, is at least 20 times the area of the deposit and is the result of glacio-fluvial reworking of the mineralized ground moraine. The Currie deposit is contained within a Keewatin succession of graphitic argillite, dacite tuff and graywacke, which is intruded by dacite and feldspar porphyry sills and dykes and truncated by a Keweenawan diabase dyke. Grade and thickness of the mineralization, which lies chiefly within the argillite, is related to felsic intrusives and hydrothermal alteration, and to fold hinges.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today&apos;s mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors&apos; mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine&apos;s use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine&apos;s use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine&apos;s use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. During the early history of the Lake Superior district, tamarack timber was used almost exclusively in the wines. It had the strength and lasting qualities necessary for a satisfactory mining timber. But about fifteen years ago the tamarack trees were attacked by a blight which killed nearly all of them so today no tamarack timber is available. Hemlock, spruce, and poplar have neither the necessary strength nor the lasting qualities for mining timber, but a large supply of maple and birch is available. These have ample strength but, when placed underground, fail by decay in about three years. This means that, instead of replacing the timber sets once in fifteen years, it must be done five or more times in the same space of time which involves not only incraesed timber costs but more important, an increased labor cost.
