THE United Electric Coal Companies, operating large strip mines at various points in Illinois, pioneered in developing and perfecting the strip method of mining coal by use of large shovels and drag-lines. Coal stripping was first started on the properties owned by this company near Danville, Ill., in 1885. The first mechanical' excavating machine used for the purpose was really a dredge minus the hull, which had been purchased from the Marion Steam Shovel Co. It was erected on a wood frame supported by wheels and was referred to as a dry-land dredge or stripping machine. Wood was used throughout in the construction of this primitive excavator, even for the boom which was 50 ft. long. A single-cylinder vertical steam engine furnished power to hoist the %-yd. dipper arid swing the boom. 400 cu. yd. of overburden moved in a day was a great record.

Book Review MEXICO UNDER CARRANZA. By Thomas E. Gibbon, Los Angeles, California. Doubleday Page and Co., New York, 1919, 270 pp., 711/2 X 5 in. $1.50. A vivid, accurate, convincing summing up of the Mexican problem as it confronts us today, devoid of sensationalism or bigotry. A compelling narrative of the relations of the Carranza Government and our own from Oct. 15, 1915, when it was recognized as the de facto government of Mexico, to the present time. It shows the absolute lack of promises kept or lived up to either with its own people or the United States. This is not done by invective or the indiscriminate use of adjectives but by quoting from the instruments on record on both sides of the case. The driving of the Red Cross out of Mexico, which condemned many of the native peons to starvation, and the interference with the Pershing Punitive Expedition are merely mentioned, but the crying crime against the Mexican people, who have sunk to unbelievable depths of misery obscured, but not exceeded, by the sufferings in Europe, is held up in a clarified light. Two illuminating chapters are devoted to the character and treatment of foreign investments in Mexico, Which are a complete refutation of the common statement that Mexico has been exploited remorselessly by the foreign investor. The conces-sions given by Diaz in the days of his regime most condemned are nowise as large nor the land grants as extensive nor the title so absolute as those granted to the railroad builders of our own transcontinental systems and other of our nationally subsidized works. This is not left to further argument but is settled by quoting the various official instruments and not at all in a tedious way. The author's concluding chapter is a picture of the Mexican people from Aztec times, when they had reached a civilization which gave them a better calendar than the Roman Empire ever had until modern times, to their present unhappy and pitiful condition. He concludes, basing his findings on parallel historical downfalls of a once proud people, that present conditions are the natural result of the absolute domination of an alien minority. He grants, of course, that there are many estimable Latin-Mexicans of integrity, ability and charm, but maintains that the dominant minority has continually degraded in fulfillment of the sociological law that the sure revenge of the servile class is found in the corruption of the master class. The book is replete with historical and literary allusions which, added to the pleasing style of the accomplished author, make fascinating the account of one of the world's great tragedies. Mr. Gibbon is a lawyer who has spent much time in Mexico and shows an understanding of the native people not shared by all writers on the Mexican problem. THE Board of Trustees, made up of three from each of the four societies, conducts the business com- mitted to United Engineering Society by its Founder Societies under its Charter, the Founder's Agreement and the Library Agreement. A draft of a budget of revenue and expenditures for the ensuing calendar year is presented each September to the secretaries of the Founder Societies for the information and comment of their governing bodies. After revision, the budget is adopted, by the incoming Board of Trustees at its meeting in January.

Although the noble building provided in New York City by Mr. Carnegie for the United Engineering Society has been pushed to about half-completion, the ceremony of laying its corner-stone was not performed until Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 1906. The stone lies just back of the southeast corner of the building, on the north side-of West 39th Street. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Carnegie, Miss Whitfield, the sister of Mrs. Carnegie, Ralph W. Pope, Secretary of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, Frederick R. Hutton, Secretary of the. Society of Mechanical Engineers, Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary of the Institute of Mining Engineers, Charles H. Haswell, the first Chief Engineer of the United States Navy (1836-1851), now in his ninety-seventh year, John Fritz, of the Bethlehem Steel Company, William H. Fletcher, President of the Engineers' Club, E. E. Olcott, President of United Engineering Society, and other interested friends. After an inspection of the interior of the building, the group formed about the corner-stone, which had been draped with the American flag. The exercises were opened by Mr. Olcott, who appropriately welcomed Mr. Carnegie, and briefly expressed the essential value of the building, saying, in part " The societies to be housed underneath this roof have as their aim the pre¬serving and putting in tangible form of the records of scientific accomplishments so as to avoid the repetition of mistakes. The possibility of finding the records of these results all at one center, so near the great Public Library of our city, will be an inestimable advantage to all professions. It is an occasion of no ordinary moment, therefore, when we can welcome Mr. Carnegie and have him lay for us the corner-stone of this great building which his liberality has provided." Mr. Carnegie responded in happy vein, thanking the committee for their greeting, and expressing his pleasure. in being able to do what he had done to further so worthy a cause. Members of the Institute have already received a special pamphlet descriptive of the United Engineering Society building, and wilt doubtless be interested in the progress that has been made up to date-February 24th-in erecting this home for the engineering profession. The old buildings on lots Nos. 25 to 33 W. 39th St., New York, were,' removed many months ago, but final contracts for the new, building were not let until the summer of 1905. The size of the building is 115 ft. on 39th Street, and 88 ft. in, depth; the height from, the sidewalk to the top of the parapet is 220 feet. The cubic contents of the building from the. bottom of the basement floor, to the top of the roof, including the pent houses, is 2,290,000 cubic feet. The number of light's, in the building will be between 4,000 and 4,500. The air supply for Auditorium and Lecture. Halls will amount to nearly 10.0,000 cu. ft, per minute, and the exhaust. to 90,000 cu. ft. per minute. In excavating for cellar and foundations, the average depth where good rock was. found was 37 ft.-it varied, however,: from 27 to 65 ft., due to an old water-course having run through the center of the lot; this condition, and the presence of soft rock, which rapidly disintegrated when exposed to air and water, made the foundation-work very difficult. As two of the column-footings of the building have to sustain a weight of 3,000,000 11) each, the most substantial foundations are necessary; 13,000 cu. yd. of earth were excavated for the foundation and basement; and 1,600 cu. yd. of concrete were necessary, to build up the footings. In the completed building there will be about 3,500,000 bricks. Owing to the number of auditoriums, and their location, and the placing of the library on the top floor; where allowance will have to be made for the enormous weight of 300,000 books, the structural steel work has been unusually complicated in this building. "THE MAYO AREA was prospected as early as 1887. The first major activity started in 1898, when the Stewart River and its tributaries were examined for placer deposits, and in succeeding years the district became a small producer of placer gold. The first discovery of the lead-zinc-silver mineralization which has become the main interest of the district occurred in 1906, when a vein was found in the canyon of Galena Creek on the northwest slope of Galena Hill. This deposit was later known as the Silver King mine. In 1919 further discoveries were made on Keno Hill, approximately 15 miles east of the Silver King, the most important being the No.9 vein. Directly or indirectly, these finds are attributable to the search for placer gold, as galena was frequently found in the stream gravels.The 1919 Keno Hill discoveries were acquired by Yukon Gold Co. and operated through a subsidiary, Keno Hill Ltd., from 1920 to 1923. Most of the production came from No.9 vein. In 1921 Treadwell Yukon Corporation entered the field and acquired the Ladue mine. This company continued to operate for 21 years. It acquired in succession the Ladue, Sadie, Friendship, Lucky Queen, Elsa, Silver King, and Calumet mines. Its record of successful operations is very largely the achievement of the late Livingston Wernecke. Under his direction, the Treadwell Yukon Corp. produced metals with a gross value in excess of $21,000,000, in the face of greater transportation problems than exist today and with considerably lower metal prices.Treadwell Yukon ceased operations in 1942. Its entire assets were acquired in 1946 by United Keno Hill Mines Ltd., which has substantially increased the original holdings. It has drawn the bulk of its production from the Hector mine, adjacent to the Calumet. The Hector was not developed by Treadwell Yukon because of legal disputes among the vendors. It has proven to be the largest deposit yet discovered in the district."

The titanium dioxide pigment industry in the United States has always relied to varying degrees on imported titanium concentrates. Dependence on foreign ilmenite was especially high (generally over 85% of consumption) until 1942, when large-scale U.S. production of ilmenite began, and has since ranged from 12% to 47%. Rutile import reliance was generally in the 45% to 80% range until the early 1960's, when increased use in the chloride pigment process raised dependence on imported rutile to over 90% in most years since 1963. Import reliance of zircon, obtained almost entirely as a byproduct of titanium mineral production, has generally ranged from about 30% to 65% of consumption. This paper will examine the history of U.S. sources of these heavy mineral commodities, and will discuss the potential U.S. future supply in view of changing industrial uses and processes and the anticipated development of new heavy-mineral-sand processing operations, such as those at Richards Bay in the Republic of South Africa and in Sierra Leone.

When the original version of this study was published in 1972 it was evident that a problem was developing on the energy scene. The ability of the United States to find the energy supplies it needed within its own boundaries--at least in the forms desired--was declining. Production of crude oil in the United States had peaked in 1970 and was declining slowly; environmental restrictions had begun to hamper the production and consumption of high sulfur coal; natural gas reserves were beginning to dwindle; and the development of nuclear power was proceeding more slowly than originally planned. Shortfalls in energy supply were being met through the importation of increasingly larger quantities of petroleum, but supplies were adequate and the price of the imports was below that of domestic production. The energy problem was more prospective than current. In October of 1973 the prospective problem became the "Energy Crisis' when the Arab petroleum exporting countries reduced crude oil production, imposed an embargo on the shipment of crude oil to the United States, and then raised the price of crude oil in a series of large steps. This crisis was a clear demonstration of the dangers of the dependence of the United States on imported petroleum, and of the Nation's vulnerability to the actions of the oil exporting countries. The past and present argillaceous rock studies for the U.S. National Waste Terminal Storage Program consist of: (1) evaluation of the geological characteristics of several wide- spread argillaceous formations in the United States; (2) laboratory studies of the physical and chemical properties of selected argillaceous rock samples; and (3) two full-scale in situ surface heater experiments that simulate the emplacement of heat-generating radioactive waste in argillaceous rock.

The subject of this discussion is timely. The U.S. phosphate industry is suffering the throes of depression. It's plight is a matter of widespread concern. The future role of the U.S. industry in world markets is of particular interest. If we should prognosticate phosphate supply-demand on the basis of recent history, we would face a puzzling choice of scenario. In 1980, perhaps the best year ever for U.S. phosphate, 54.6 million metric tons of phosphate rock entered the market place. Of this, more than half was exported -- divided almost equally - as rock or phosphate fertilizer. During the last half of 1981 the situation had begun to change.

"The Midvale. Plant of the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Company, situated twelve miles south of Salt Lake City, consists of mills for concentrating lead-zinc ores and a custom lead smelter.The milling department includes a 475-ton gravity mill for ores from the United States Mines at Bingham, a 100-ton Huff electrostatic zinc plant and a 60-ton pilot flotation mill for differential separation of lead and zinc. The gravity mill and electro¬static plant are being replaced by a 600-ton differential flotation plant, now under con¬struction, for differential separation of lead, zinc and iron. This new mill will have cap¬acity for treating custom ores in addition to ores from the company's mines at Bingham.The smelting department is equipped to handle 1600 tons of charge per day through six blast furnaces, 48 inches by 160 inches at the tuyeres. All gases from both blast furnaces and roasters are filtered through baghouses, which remove the dust from the gases so effectively that even when the plant is running at full capacity no smoke can be seen coming out of the 450-foot brick stack handling rca2ter gases, nor out of the two shorter steel stacks which take the blast furnace gases. On this account the Midvale plant has come to be known as the ""smokeless smelter.""The blast furnace gases are filtered through 832 woolen bags, 33 feet 6 inches by 18 inches in diameter, and 1200 woolen bags, 28 feet by 12 inches in diameter."

Resource Engineering and Development, Inc. is designing and building a portable 150 to 225 TPD, flotation-cyanide leach plant with unitized, skid-mounted components. This plant design, with its portability, low capital investment, and high recovery of silver and gold from many partially oxidized ores, is well suited to treat many small, high-grade deposits, old waste dumps, and old mill tailing piles. A description is given of flotation and/or cyanide leach tests run on about 17 partially oxidized, newly mined ores; waste dump materials; placer slimes; and old mill tailings.

The idea of veneering rich yellow gold alloys with a low-melting, high expansion porcelain, has been a driving force for metal-ceramic research in dentistry. Since 1990, with the advent of the Carrara System (1), a low firing temperature veneering ceramic allowed the use of gold alloys with a lower content of platinum and palladium than the traditional gold-platinum ceramic alloys and thus a richer yellow color. The earlier high gold-platinum ceramic alloys contained at least 12 percent platinum group metals to allow for dimensional stability when firing the relatively high melting traditional ceramics. This amount of platinum group metals gave the alloys a greyish tinge which made them unattractively steel colored and difficult to present as ?high gold alloys?. In the 90?s the new generation universal low-melting, high expansion gold alloys gained market share at a steady rate, starting in Germany, and have now for a great part replaced the traditional gold-platinum alloys (Fig. 1). The first alloys contained 75 wt-% gold and up to 9 wt-% platinum or palladium. They provided a metal-ceramic system in which a gold alloy having an aesthetic yellow colour is fired on with a dental porcelain tailored thereto. The tailoring is meant in respect of compatible coefficients of thermal expansion, and compatible melting or softening points of metal and porcelain. The major concerns in the beginning were with thermal stability during firing, the thermal expansion coefficient of the alloy against the porcelain (compatibility) and the yellow color. In a later stage, alloys with gold contents in the range of 50-60 wt-% gold were developed in analogy with the pale yellow gold-reduced alloys that were formerly used for crown & bridge work and the white gold-reduced alloys used for metal veneering where gold was substituted in part by palladium.

"As I have recently carried out some further research on the Navan lead-zinc deposit data while working in Michel David's research team, I should like to add a few comments on the paper- ""Universal Kriging for Ore-Reserve Estimation- Conceptual Background and Application to the Navan Deposit"", by M. Dagbert and M. David (CIM Bulletin, pp. 80-92, February 1976). The first comment is that since this research has been carried out, important new theoretical advances have been made which make for an easier application of geostatistics to the non-stationary case (see Matheron0l). This is the theory of intrinsic random functions of order k. With the aid of this theory, it has been possible to write computer programs which can carry out automatically universal kriging, although so far such applications have been largely confined to automatic contouring and not to mining problems. However, if approached with care there is no reason why these methods should not be applied to mining problems and, in this case, an automatic study has been done on this data."

The authors often see problems on mine sites that are due to insufficient feedback between technical discipline silos as the realities on the ground fail to inform the models and plans used to drive resource exploitation. Resource modelling, reserve definition, life-of-mine planning, short-term mine planning and scheduling, mine operations and beneficiation operations are all processes that inform each other, but in many instances feedback between these processes occurs in an ad hoc way and only after problems have come to light.Universal reconciliation uses a multidisciplinary approach across the entire mining value chain to identify both opportunity and loss of value and to maximise operational performance. This paper will look at the operational effectiveness of universal reconciliation and will outline the important elements that make it successful, including how to map out the detail underpinning modelling, planning and execution processes. We do this by documenting the physical processes, logical work practices, organisational roles and responsibilities, data origin and quality, working assumptions and information management practices at an operation. The results quickly show how misinformation and assumption causes suboptimal decisions to be taken, where inefficiencies exist and what the opportunity is to remedy these issues.A universal reconciliation study opens up an opportunity for stakeholders to reassess how the operation should be run and how operational effectiveness should be measured. Clear envelopes for reconciliation become obvious and questions about the practicality and data quality can be addressed.A reconciliation code of practice is a key element of a successful universal reconciliation project and the authors outline the important aspects that will provide an operating model, showing the effectiveness of the resource and reserve modelling, the practicality of the mine planning and scheduling practices, how well the mine operations team are executing these schedules and how effective the processing area is given what it is fed. Most importantly, a system that allows operations time to react before the losses become systemic and that is based on identifying early warnings from hard data when these processes start to wobble is outlined. Universities have education as their primary purpose. This appears to be an innocuous statement with simple meaning. In an age of conflicting semantics, however, cords and meanings are often lost or changed. The term education is often broadly expanded to encompass any form of learning process, or the accumulation of knowledge, and even to the beneficial application of knowledge to man's problems, hence one find that education in universities is not solely the formal process of texts, lectures, recitations, and testing by a batch process known as class room teaching. Despite critics of education batch is spelled with an "a", instead of an "o" - at least we hope so If one defines teaching as causing to learn, then the learning objectives may necessitate a variety of approaches within the teaching concept and research is among those favored at the graduate and some undergraduate levels. Research has been among the glamour words and certain fields such as oceanography and space science have had more than their share of glamour. Unfortunately, industrial mineral research has not had the competitive drawing power of enamoring students of the "note" generation in terms of glamorous accomplishment. Research today usually requires sophisticated equipment and such equipment is expensive, both for initial purchase and operation. Recent decades have seen significant advancements in analytical and experimental techniques, thermodynamic theory, and computational capabilities in high temperature research which are particularly timely to address the challenges of increasingly complex and variable feedstocks in both primary and secondary pyrometallurgical processes, the need to optimise and improve them. Currently a research program is in progress on the development of the 20-component multi-phase thermodynamic database for pyrometallurgical smelting, refining and recycling systems describing thermodynamics and phase equilibria of molten slag, matte, speiss, salts, alloys and associated solids. The integrated experimental and modelling program has been supported for nearly two decades by several consortia of 14 major international companies with over 30 operations around the world, integrates many components, incorporates many in-house developments, and brings together many different groups of professionals of different levels from junior and mid-career to senior from both industry and university sectors. The aims of the paper are:  to outline the many components and issues of the overall program including analytical, experimental and thermodynamic modelling research as well as implementation of the results in industrial practice, professional education, planning and organisation issues.  to highlight the opportunities, challenges, and possible solutions.  to present these to all different groups of professionals involved in the current program.  and thus, importantly, to facilitate possible future further developments and collaborations in the field of phase equilibria and thermodynamics of complex high-temperature systems.

The various facets of university-company cooperative activities and the opportunities for collaborative research for the mineral industries are presented in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of various alternative research funding arrangements for the researcher, the university, and the sponsoring corporation are discussed. Examples of university-industry cooperative research programs are briefly outlined. The concept of a cooperative mining research program is presented. The improvement of performance through techno- logical developments and human skills may well be the greatest competitive edge available to the U.S. mining industry. In this regard, the need for new endeavors between industry and universities can hardly be overemphasized.

The federal government's declining role in funding research has created a critical dollar gap for university departments of mining engineering. Industry is not unaffected by the drought: not only is research lagging, but hard- pressed universities are going to the private sector for funding. This paper's thesis is not that mining companies should shower universities with philanthropy, but that a quid pro quo ought to be exacted: a research partnership should be contracted on a pay-as-you-go basis. A model exists at The University of Alabama (albeit not in mining) that may lend itself to adoption by our industry.

Introduction Only a person fresh from an information vacuum could not know the status of this nation's economy. The inability of the US to compete in the world marketplace is manifested in many industries, from shoes to computer chips, from cars to copper. What industry will next fall prey to world competition? Perhaps the question should be, what insustry will next fall prey to declining productivity? American industry is being forced into an era where the focus must be on productivity, quality, cost control, and competition in the world marketplace. It is approaching a change that could rival the American Industrial Revolution. The future of the US is bright only if it can increase productivity by trying different and new ways to manage its businesses and people. Unlike the easy successes during the 60s and 70s, success in the decades ahead will depend on an ability to compete in the world market. Any operation can achieve unlimited productivity by developing the resources within its employees. As an industry, mining has harvested the earth's resources. As an industry in trouble, it now has to learn to tap human resources to release the energy and creativity in each person. Recently, I worked with a mining operation to reopen a mine and implement a different management approach. The extensive changes resulted in a 50% reduction in cash cost of producing silver (from $0.40 to $0.19/g or from $12.50 to $6 per oz). Thus, an unprofitable mine became an attractive business venture without technological changes or significant capital infusion. The operation is union-free, in spite of being in a highly unionized area. The mine implemented a real productivity improvement process called "gain-sharing." Employees now recognize their individual success is tied to the success of the business. They recognize the day of the free lunch is over for mining employees. This paper will explore three areas related to productivity: • some of the unspoken "whys" of the mining industry's paralysis and how management has caused unproductiveness in mining operations; • major components of a productivity improvement process; and • characteristics common to companies with successful productivity plans. Unspoken whys When things go wrong, everyone tends to point a finger at someone, anyone. This industry has blamed every conceivable person, corporate group, government agency, foreign government, and private group for its failures. The fault finger will not work anymore. Nobody is listening. It is a characteristic of winners in management to assume responsibility for less than acceptable performance. Excellent people tend to blame others less for problems. Everyone involved in mining should shoulder part of the blame for the industry's illness. Is the problem low prices or our high operating costs? To regain our status in the world marketplace and increase our productivity, we need to painfully and honestly talk about our mistakes.
