Deer Island is the site of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) wastewater treatment plant which, when completed in 1999, will serve 43 cities and towns in central eastern Massachusetts. Deer Island is located in the Boston Harbor, as shown on Figure 1. The existing wastewater treatment plant on Deer Island is being upgraded to include secondary treatment to comply with Federal require­ments. The new treatment facilities will process an average of 455 million gallons of sewage per day; total capacity will be about one billion gallons per day. The new treatment facilities will cover virtually the entire island. [ ]

"The installation of Bored Piles and Diaphragm Wall under slurry using tremie raises quality concerns on the integrity of concrete. It is vital to understand the effects on concrete integrity during concrete pouring process. This paper intends to unveil to what extent the compressive strength of the concrete pour is affected in contact with drilling fluid still. Another important angle of analysis proves whether the inclusion of solids particles of un-hydrated fluid could have impact on the concrete compressive strength. The testing comparing the response of concrete compressive strength when drilling fluid is included into the concrete mix altering the water/cement ratio by 5%, 20% and 30%. Comparative results are analysed between two different hydrated slurries namely sodium activated Bentonite and 3rd generation synthetic polymer.1. INTRODUCTIONSoil stabilization is the base for a successful deep foundation execution. The G3 System Slurry developed by Ground Engineering Operations (GEO), with its third generation polymer, namely PolyMud®, is an innovative and unique alternative to the mineral based slurries for soil stabilization, enhancing the quality and integrity of the underground foundation structures. It optimises the production rate of work progress and cost as well. At the same time, PolyMud® slurry is proven to be environmentally friendly.Guaranteeing the maximum quality of the foundation elements according to the initial design is one of the most important objectives and a concern for the foundations contractors. In order to fulfil the project expectations in this aspect, any incident that could compromise the designed concrete integrity and capacity must be avoided.GEO, has carry out its own research regarding effects on the concrete compression results if drilling fluid intermixes with fresh concrete while pouring. To shed light in this regard, GEO, in collaboration with CML (Concrete Materials Laboratory) Sdn. Bhd., carried out empiric tests that analyse this particular event from different perspectives, bringing up the corresponding results that will be studied and commented in this article."

"The most important factor in Canadian mining is not the operating cost of current projects but the availability of capital for future projects. The future of mining at depth will be producing ore from the top of the orebody working downward with very effective, tightly controlled mining methods, i.e. either selective mining or bulk mining with well controlled dilution and fragmentation. The key characteristics of future mines will be smaller access excavations, more effective ground support, very precise blasting techniques and more efficient and reliable materials handling systems. Equipment will be smaller and designed for high efficiency and low maintenance, reducing both the capital and operating cost. This means there will be fewer scoops, more continuous mucking machines and conveyor belts, both lateral and vertical.Orepass failures have become accepted and the resultant redevelopment and retramming has become common. The capital investment in so-called permanent ore passes and crusher stations becomes questionable, particularly when crushers are only necessary for less than 10% of the ore going through the system. The best way to solve the chronic instability of ore passes is, as with all of the stability problems at depth, by reducing the excavation size rather than increasing ground support. Smaller access drifts would reduce the capital cost and increase the rate of development as well as reduce the amount of waste to be handled, reducing the ground support and the ventilation requirements. Large drifts and ore passes are essential only for the equipment needed to handle large pieces of ore and the productivity of scoops is very expensive when the requirements for ventilation and large access drifts are taken into account. The key issue is the fragmentation generated by primary blasting.The future of mining in Canada will depend on simple and robust technology geared to the environment in which it will have to operate. Its survival will depend on some-thing much more fundamental and difficult to accomplish than a technological advance — it will require a dramatic change in the way the mining process is managed, how work is organized, how effort is rewarded and how costs are measured — a complete change in mind-set."

CONSIDERABLE deep hole prospect drilling has been done in the last few years in the Globe-Miami mining district about 70 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, and in the San Manuel-Tiger area about 50 miles south of the Globe-Miami region. More than 205,000 ft of churn drilling have been completed by the San Manuel Copper Corp. at their property in the Old Hat Mining District in southern Pinal County. The deepest hole on this property is 2850 ft; there are 49 holes deeper than 2000 ft. At the adjoining Houghton property of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., where only one hole reached 2000-ft depth, there were 27,472 ft of churn drilling and 3436 ft of diamond drilling. Three churn drill holes were deepened by diamond drilling methods. Near Miami in the Globe-Miami district the Amico Mining Corp. drilled four holes by combined churn and rotary drilling methods, the total amounting to 13,879 ft, of which 2256 ft were drilled with a portable rotary rig. In the same district, besides doing a large amount of shallow prospect drilling, the Miami Copper Co. drilled two holes of 2560 and 3787 ft, respectively, which were completed by churn drilling methods. The rocks encountered in drilling at San Manuel and Tiger are described by Steele and Rubly in their paper on the San Manuel Prospect' and by Chapman in a report on the San Manuel Copper Deposit? The rocks are well-consolidated Gila conglomerate, quartz , monzonite, and monzonite porphyry. In some places these formations stand very well while being drilled, and three holes were drilled without casing, the deepest of which was 2200 ft. In other holes faulted and fractured ground made drilling difficult. In the Globe-Miami district the deep drilling was done in the down-faulted block of Gila conglomerate east of the Miami fault and in the underlying Pinal schist. The geology of this area is described by Ransome.3 In the Amico holes the conglomerate varied from material consisting entirely of granite boulders and fragments to a rock made up of schist fragments in a sandy matrix; in the Miami Copper Co. holes there were more granite boulders and the material was poorly consolidated. Drilling was much more difficult and expensive in the Miami area than in the San Manuel district, mainly because of the depth of the holes and the formations drilled. All the deep hole prospecting described in this paper was done with portable rigs. The churn drill rigs were of several types, of which the Bucyrus-Erie were the most popular. Bucyrus-Erie 28L, 29W, and 36L rigs were used on some of the deeper holes on the San Manuel property. A few Fort Worth spudder types were tried, and the deepest hole at San Manuel was drilled with a Fort Worth Jumbo H. The spudder type is considerably larger than most other rigs used on this work and required a larger location site. The spudders were belt-driven machines with separate power units, and time required for setting up and moving was much longer than with the more portable drills. All the churn drilling was done by contractors or with machinery leased from them. A few of the contractors had complete equipment, including most of the necessary fishing tools. Unusual and special, fishing tools were obtainable from the supply companies in the oil fields of New Mexico or in the Los Angeles area. Most of the contractors used equipment with standard API tool joints, so that much of it was interchangeable. Failure of tool joints is one of the principal causes of fishing jobs. It can be minimized if the joints are kept to the API specifications and the proper sized joints are used in the various holes. The minimum sizes that should be used with various bits are as follows: 12-in. and larger bits, 4x5-in. tool joints; 10-in. bits, 3 1/4x4 1/4-in. tool joints; 8-in. bits, 2 3/4x 3 3/4-in. tool joints; 6-in. bits, 2 1/4 x3 l/4 -in. tool joints; 4-in. bits, 1 5/8 x2 5/8-in. tool joints. Two rotary drill rigs were tried at San Manuel on the same hole, and a portable rotary drill rig was used on the Amico drilling for test coring the formation and for drilling in holes 3 and 4. Rotary drilling differs from churn drilling or cable tool drilling in that the bit is revolved by a string of drill pipe and the cuttings are removed from the hole by a thin solution of mud pumped through the drill pipe. The principal parts of a rotary rig are the power unit, a rotating table to revolve the drill pipe, hoists to raise and lower the pipe and to handle casing, and a pumping system to circulate the drilling liquid. The rig used on the Amico property at Miami was mounted on a truck. The larger rig used on the San Manuel property was hauled by several trucks and had separate turntable and pumping units. Diamond drill coring equipment was used successfully with the rotary rig in the holes on the Amico property, To allow for 2 3/8-in. drill pipe with tool joints, 3 1/2-in. core barrels and bits were used. With the standard 3 1/2-in. core barrel there was considerable difficulty in maintaining circulation with mud, so a barrel was designed with a smaller inner tube and a broad-faced bit. This allowed coarser material to circulate between the barrels. Rock bits of 5 5/8 to 3 7/8 in. were used with the rotary rig for drilling between core runs. Diamond drill equipment is much lighter than churn drill tools, so that fishing tools can usually be obtained from supply houses by air express when needed. Three churn drill holes on the Houghton property at Tiger were deepened by diamond drilling with Longyear UG Straitline gasoline-driven-machines. Mineral processing plants, in general, consist of comminution and separation circuits. Rougher flotation is considered as the heart of the separation circuit with concentrate grade and mineral recovery being the key productivity and quality parameters that affect the downstream operations and profitability. Online prediction of these parameters can help improve process performance in real-time. Past efforts to predict flotation cell performance have focused on building physics-based or machinelearning (ML) based models. Although physics-based models are popular in process design applications, ML models are more appropriate for online monitoring, control and optimisation due to their lower computational requirements. Deep learning (DL) is gaining prominence nowadays for application in industrial operations where a large amount of data is available. We have developed a DL model based on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks to forecast the two key performance indicators (KPIs), namely, mineral recovery and concentrate grade in a mineral processing plant. Rougher feed characteristics such as mineral grade and particle size distribution, upstream measurable disturbances such as throughput of the comminution circuit and pulp density, and control variables such as aeration rate, pH, and collector addition rate are considered as explanatory variables to train the model. The model was tested with data from an industrial mineral processing plant. For real-time dynamic predictions, the trained model appropriately accounts for mismatch in measurement frequency of real-time process data and off-line laboratory analysis data. Such a time series model can be used as a state observer in model predictive control techniques for optimal control of unit operations in a mineral processing plant. The Deep Leg Flotation Cell was developed to solve a problem which confronted the Smith-Douglass Company on moving from one mining area to another. Poor recovery and, to some extent, inferior concentrate grade were encountered in the silica flota¬tion circuit. This was believed due to the softness of the phosphate which caused it to form slime. In view of the urgency of the matter, the problem was attacked from two angles. The first involved the development of a flotation cell which would not create slime and the second, a new or improved reagent for floating silica from phosphate rock which would be less sensitive to slime than reagents currently in use.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of the underground mines operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). DMLZ is located approximately 1,500 m below ground level, where dominant rock types are skarn and diorite. The DMLZ mine and layout was designed based on the previous mine located above ground, the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ). The DOZ mine, located approximately 1,000 m below ground level, was a proven success, with a maximum capacity of 80K tonnes per day. During the production ramp up, which started in 2015, the DMLZ experienced several seismic events. The most significant event occurred in January 2018 with a recorded magnitude of more than 2.0 Mw, which resulted in a 14-month delay of the undercutting until March 2019. The significant event in January 2018 required the DMLZ to apply several adjustments related to the mining plan to help ensure it could continue development and achieve production target safely. This paper will describe the changes in the DMLZ mine plan as a response to the seismic activity at the mine, the reason behind the decisions being made to change the mine plan and strategy, as well as strengths and weaknesses between the previous plan compared with the new plan.

"IntroductionThe difficulties to be overcome in shaft sinking and development at depth are centred at McIntyre in and around No. 12 shaft. Generally they have been due to increasing pressures and temperatures and to changes in geological structure. This paper describes the difficulties and the measures taken to meet them.No. 12 ShaftEarly in 1932 McIntyre decided to sink an internal shaft from the deepest level, the 3875, to explore and develop known veins extending below that horizon. The location selected was a point 1,500 feet south and 1,000 feet east of No. 11 shaft, the main operating shaft through which the men, ore, and most of the materials are handled Shaft and auxiliary equipment we1e laid out for 3,000 feet, that is to 7,000 feet below the surface. The shaft was to be capable of handling 1,500 tons of ore daily from the lowest level, and was to provide ventilation, compressed air, water, and electric power to service all levels.No. 12 is an internal, vertical shaft extending from the 3875 to the 6825 level and bottoming at 7,007 feet. It is a rectangular, four-compartment shaft, 21 ft. 9¾, in. by 6 ft. 3¾ in. outside the timber (Figure 1).There are two hoisting compartments and one airway compartment, each 4 ft. 10¾ in. by 5 ft. ¾ in. inside dimensions, and a combined manway, pipe, and cable compartment 4 ft. ¼ in. by 5 ft. ¾ in. Levels have been established at 150-foot intervals, pump stations and sumps at 1,000-foot intervals, and. there are two loading pockets, one at the 5525 and the other at the 6900 level.The shaft was sunk in two stages. The first stage, consisting of preparation above the 3875 level and sinking to 5585 feet, was completed by March 31st, 1935. The second stage of deepening the shaft from 5,585 to 7,007 feet was started August lst, 1946, and completed three years later."

SOME months ago a Committee on Deep-level Mining was appointed [by the Government of the Union of South Africa] to consider the possibility of gold mining being carried on at a depth below 8,500 feet. The Committee consisted of Sir Robert Kotze (Chairman) , Mr. H. S. H. Donald (Government Mining Engineer), and Mr. H. R. Hill. The Committee has now made a report which was tabled in the House of Assembly on March 1st. The Committee reported that the tonnage of ore locked up in the deep level areas of the Central Witwatersrand is enormous, and in the 30 miles between Roodepoort and the East Rand Proprietory Mines has a value of about £200,000,000. The Committee says that, with good ventilation, the present system of wet mining, possibly with some modification and with the aid of refrigeration, may be carried to 10,000 feet, but that greater depths will require the adoption of dry mining. "A vigorous campaign of practical experiment into the possibility of dry mining should be initiated, and the Committee recommends to the Government the appointment of a committee of experts, consisting of representatives of the mining industry, the Mines Department, and the medical profession, with the Government Mining Engineer as chairman. The Committee suggests the provision of £30,000 for the first year for the investigations and experiments contemplated, which could best be carried out by an organization which might be styled 'The Rand Mining Research Institute' and constituted somewhat on the Jines of the South African Institute for Medical Research" . The Committee suggests that this committee of experts should arrange for experiments to be made with dry mining in one of the deepest mines, and investigate ventilation, refrigeration, support of workings, and the physiological problems connected with mining. "We emphasize the necessity of treating this whole question as one of importance and urgency. The investigations should be prosecuted with the utmost vigour and should not be delayed at any time for want of funds or for any other reason. If they are not done thoroughly and quickly, the whole scheme might just as well be left severely alone.

"Deep mixing columns are widely used to support embankments constructed on soft ground area. Researches on the stability of deep mixing columns were done by some authors when the columns do not simultaneously fail but individually fail at different time. A layer of shallow mixing is proposed to reinforce these columns as a group to increase the stability as well as loading capacity of columned improved area. Two centrifuge model tests were done to observe the effect of shallow layer on reducing embankment displacement as well as on failure pressure of improved ground. Acrylic piles were used as deep mixing columns in the centrifuge tests to avoid unexpected internal failure of columns. The results of centrifuge tests were also simulated by 2D FEM to back-analyze the centrifuge experiments. A good agreement between the centrifuge experiments and the numerical simulations shows that by using a shallow layer reinforcing individual columns, the horizontal displacement at the embankment toe reduces by 60 % and the tilting failure is clearly indicated in columns without shallow layer. Although, no significant failure was observed under the current centrifuge condition, the failure pressure of improved ground was significantly increased with the columns reinforced by shallow layer.INTRODUCTIONCement or lime and soil mixing technique was firstly used in Japan and Nordic countries since 1970s. The technique is used to improve soft soil by increasing its mechanical properties including strength and consolidation characteristics (Kitazume and Terashi 2013). Various researches were done to investigate the characteristics of mixing material due to various factors including types of binder, condition of soil, mixing condition and curing condition (Terashi 1997). On the other hand, many studies focused on the application of in-situ mixing technique such as supporting embankment and underground structure as well as working as the foundation of building and factory (Kitazume and Terashi 2013). In term of embankment supporting, column-type improvement is taken into account for huge applications. Due to loading from embankment, the deep mixing columns tend to fail either external failure (Kitazume and Maruyama 2006) or internal failure (Kitazume and Maruyama 2007). However, the deep mixing columns do not fail simultaneously but instead one by one at different time (Kitazume and Maruyama 2007). Because the deep mixing columns work and fail individually, the strength and stiffness of all columns cannot be mobilized simultaneously. By using a shallow mixing layer fixing the top of deep mixing columns, individual columns may work simultaneously. A combined technology of shallow stabilization and floating-type cement treated columns is used to reduce settlement of a high embankment on soft ground (Ishikura et al. 2007). A research on effect of surface improvement layer on internal stability of group column type deep mixing improved ground under embankment load was reported in the Port and Airport Research Institute, Japan (Kitazume 2011). However, the failure pattern of shallow and deep mixing combined structure has not well studied. This research focuses on the external failure mechanism of the combined structure by centrifuge model tests and back-analyzed simulation using 2D finite element method. The effect of shallow layer on embankment displacement and the yield point of the improved ground is also discussed in this study."

"One million seven-hundred thousand cubic yards of deep mixing were installed to support an elevation raise of an earthen levee known as LPV 111, which is located in east New Orleans. The deep mixing was done by two contractors using somewhat different technologies, but producing elements of the same size. As part of the quality control and quality assurance program, 507 deep-mixed elements were cored and 5,082 specimens were strength tested in unconfined compression. This paper presents data from the coring and testing program. Very high percentages of the core run lengths were recovered, except during one period for one mixing technology. The coring methods are described, and reasons for the isolated episode of low recovery are discussed. The strength data show that the specification acceptance criteria were satisfied. Statistical parameters of the strength data are provided, and trends between strength and the following factors are discussed: depth, soil type, binder factor, and project-specific experience. Photographs of longitudinal cuts of core specimens are presented. Important lessons learned from this unusually large project are described.INTRODUCTIONThe Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity Hurricane Protection system included a project known as LPV 111, which is an approximately 5-mile long segment of levee and floodwall located in east New Orleans along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent to Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge (Cali et al. 2012). The majority of the project consisted of a raise of an existing earthen levee from an existing crest elevation of about 18 ft to a new crest elevation of about 28 ft. The underlying soils were weak and compressible, providing inadequate support for the raised levee. Ground improvement in the form of deep mixing was selected to provide the necessary stability and settlement control for the raised levee.The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New Orleans District, was the governmental agency in responsible charge of the project, including approval of design, construction, and payment. The lead designer was URS Corporation, and the general contractor was Archer-Western-Alberici (AWA), working in alliance with TREVIICOS South (Trevi), who, together with Fudo Construction (Fudo), performed the deep mixing.As part of the quality control and quality assurance program, over 500 production deep-mixed elements were cored, the cores were carefully logged, and over 5,000 unconfined compression tests were performed. In addition, selected specimens were carefully photographed before and after longitudinal saw cuts to expose the interior of the specimens. This paper provides a summary of the coring and testing performed on the production deep-mixed elements."

"In-situ remediation of contaminated land with deep mixing can enable a multi-technique remedial strategy on the same site combining low permeability barriers, permeable reactive barriers, stabilisation/ solidification treatments as well as ground improvement, delivering significant advantages over alternative strategies. This was the core objective of Project SMiRT (Soil Mix Remediation Technology) which involved the execution of the largest research field trials in the UK to date to provide field validation for this technique. Around 800m3 of soil were treated on a contaminated site in Yorkshire in May 2011 with 6 different treatments, testing ~40 binder compositions and 10 different installation methodologies. Field monitoring, testing and coring activities at the site took place within the first 2 months after treatment and then again at 34 months after treatment. This paper presents an overview of the field activities to date and some 3-year results and assessment of a subset of the treated soil sections. Some good correlations are seen together with some clear differences between treatments. There is generally an observed consistency with depth, with the mixing effectiveness having a more profound effect than the binder composition or content, within the tested materials and ranges. These field trial activities are currently being used in the development of the full-scale commercial remedial strategy for the site.INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW OF PROJECT SMiRTWhile there are strong financial and environmental incentives to remediate and redevelop brownfield sites there are also barriers including fear of the unknown, regulatory control, delays, increased costs and the stigma associated with such sites. Hence the remediation process needs to be conducted in such a way to maximise the incentives and overcome the barriers, which is how deep mixing found its niche in the land remediation market. Soil mix technology is such a versatile technique that can perform a number of remediation treatments on the same site. These include low permeability in-ground barriers (cut-off walls), permeable reactive barriers (PRB), stabilisation/solidification (S/S) treatments, other additive related remediation, e.g. in-situ chemical oxidation and bioremediation, as well as soil amendments for greening and also ground improvement all on the same site (Al-Tabbaa et al, 2011). Placed in the context of alternative solutions, soil mix technology could potentially replace the five techniques shown in Figure 1, which would be required to deliver the same treatments mentioned above. Treatment trains strategy, where a combination of techniques in succession are used to both reduce the contamination levels and deal with residual contamination, is becoming common in land remediation and the use of one set of equipment to deliver this would bring about significant financial advantages. In addition, soil mix technology has many other advantages in terms of speed of implementation, elimination of exposure to contamination, elimination of off-site disposal and low cost. Soil mix technology for the remediation of contaminated land emerged in the UK in the mid 1980s and has since been employed in over 30 or so projects, which far exceeds its application to ground improvement for which only a handful of jobs have been carried out to date."

"As a part of the ‘US Army Corps of Engineers - New Orleans to Venice, Louisiana Hurricane Protection Project’, deep mixing ground improvement was designed to reinforce the soft ground for the emergency repair of a 7297-foot (2,224 m) long section of the Mississippi River West Bank levee in Buras Levee District under the contract ‘Emergency Levee Repairs – Contract P-17A, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana’. The ground improvement utilizes a series of soil-cement panels oriented in the transverse direction of the levee. Each soil-cement panel consists of overlapped columns installed by the deep mixing method (DMM). DMM is performed from the existing top of levee and extended to competent stratum at depths varying from 26 feet (7.9 m) to 47 feet (14.3 m) below the working platform. The main purpose of the DMM panels is to provide shear resistance to the levee against lateral loads at high flood water condition. The DMM panels support the additional vertical load created by the increased height of the levee for hurricane protection and control the long-term settlement of the remediated levee, which might otherwise occur due to the compression of soft foundation soils. The total amount of DMM treatment is approximately 54,000 cubic yards (41,500 cubic meters). This paper reviews the project background, subsurface soil conditions and presents the design, construction and quality control of the deep mixing work for this levee repair project.INTRODUCTIONIn August 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused major damage to the federal and non-federal flood control projects in southeast Louisiana. In September 2005, Hurricane Rita caused further damage to this flood protection system. In an effort to minimize further damage and to enhance the protection level, certain non-federal levees located on the west bank of the Mississippi river in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana were incorporated into the New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection project by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). DMM techniques were then utilized by the USACE in several of these emergency projects and in many medium sized projects between 2006 and 2010 (Bruce et al. 2012). This project (called P-17A hereafter) which forms a part of this protection system is executed under the contract Emergency Levee Repairs, Contract P-17A. This is one of the largest projects of the USACE after LPV- 111. The huge LPV-111 project (5.5 miles (8.9 km) of levee) treated by DMM), the largest DMM project ever conducted outside Japan, began in 2010 and was completed in 2012 (Cali et al. 2012, Bruce et al. 2012).DMM is utilized at P-17A to construct a series of soil-cement panels oriented in the transverse direction of the existing levee to provide shear resistance to the levee against the lateral load during high flood water condition. The project extends 7297-foot (2,224 m) along the West Bank Levee of the Mississippi River in the Buras district of Louisiana, parallel to Louisiana Highway 23 (LA-23) as shown in Figure 1. It is located approximately 60 miles (96 km) south-east of downtown New Orleans."

"An extensive, deep mixing (DM) ground improvement program using the Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) technique was designed and constructed in 2013 to support up to 20 m (66 ft) high Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls and bulk earthworks for the development of the Kitimat Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility at Bish Cove, British Columbia. The deep mixing program consisted of overlapping rectangular panels of in situ cement treated soils, constructed using the CSM technique, to form barrettes covering an area of approximately 12,900 m2 (15,428 yd2) and providing suitable static and seismic stability of foundation soils for support of the proposed MSE walls, which would in turn support LNG facilities. The deep mixing program comprised of 1645 CSM panels that were constructed through varying thicknesses and discontinuous layers of very soft fine-grained marine deposits and/or loose sandy silt to silty sand deposits, embedding typically 2 m ( 6.6 ft) into dense silty sand to sand and gravel. CSM panel depths ranged from 5 m (16 ft) to 30 m (98 ft) and were constructed by treating approximately 73,900 m3 (96,658 yd3) of soil yielding average unconfined compressive strengths exceeding 2.5MPa (363 psi).This paper outlines the approach adopted for the design of the CSM ground improvement program in the highly variable subsurface conditions present at the site. A phased sitespecific investigation consisting of boreholes, test pits, Cone Penetration Tests, piston tube sampling, advanced laboratory testing and groundwater monitoring was implemented. In addition, soil-cement bench scale testing was completed, followed by installation of 8 CSM panels for field trial purposes. Extensive geotechnical static and seismic analyses including Limit Equilibrium stability analyses, liquefaction assessments, and advanced numerical modeling were undertaken to optimize the design and meet the project-specific design performance criteria. The Design-Build team worked closely to develop and implement Quality Assurance and Quality Control plans and managed significant construction challenges while achieving suitable panel termination depths."

"Abstract The Deep Mixing Methods (DMM), in their current forms, have been employed in the United States since 1986, although an earlier version had seen service from 1954. The earlier developments were strongly influenced by practices in the Nordic countries and Japan, while by the late 1980’s several DMM systems had been developed in the U.S. itself. Since then, DMM has continued its evolution, principally via the challenges of a series of large, landmark projects, but also via distinct, significant technological advances. This paper highlights the key points in the history of DMM in the U.S., and provides an overview of the different methods currently in use.In the BeginningIt is a common misconception that the history of applications of the Deep Mixing Methods (DMM) in the United States dates from 1986 when SMW Seiko Inc. — a subsidiary of Japan’s Seiko Kogyo Company — was established in the Bay Area. However, the author believes that Intrusion Prepakt Co.’s patented MIP (Mixed in Place) system had been used, albeit sporadically (about 30 projects are recorded), since 1954 (FHWA 2000, 2001). Ironically, by 1961 this single auger method had been extensively used under license in Japan for excavation support and groundwater control — by the Seiko Kogyo Company. By 1972, the original MIP technique had been succeeded by more advanced Japanese methods, involving multiple augers. Intrusion Prepakt have long since become defunct.The first systematic studies of contemporary Deep Mixing Methods in Japan began in 1967 when the Port and Harbor Research Institute of the Ministry of Transportation began laboratory testing using granular and powdered lime for treating soft marine soils. Fundamental studies continued through the early 1970’s, by which time the development of industrial scale equipment was well advanced, having its first application on a marine trial near Haneda Airport. Coincidentally, laboratory and field research also began in 1967 in Sweden (“Swedish Lime Column Method”) for treating soft clays using unslaked lime. Reportedly the progenitor was a Norwegian, Kjeld Paus, who had made observations on fluid lime columns in the U.S. It would seem that developments in Japan and the Nordic countries proceeded independently until 1975 when the technology leaders from each group (Broms and Boman; and Okumura and Terashi, respectively) presented their — very similar — findings at a conference in Bangalore, India. Limited technical exchanges ensued thereafter.Whereas the Nordic developments continued to focus on the use of dry reagents (cement and lime) and relatively light equipment compatible with operating on and in very soft clays and organics, the Japanese progressed into the use of fluid reagents (cement-based grouts) and heavier equipment for both marine and land-based projects. "With cities’ development, underground space exploitation presents a need for bigger and deeper constructions now. Technical problems founded during the construction of deep foundation pit support become more and more important. The supporting system has to cut or partly cut off hydraulic connection outside and inside the foundation pit, control the ground settlement caused by dewatering and make sure safety of foundation pit and its surroundings. Some preliminary study and application of ultra-deep soil reinforcement methods have been conducted in Shanghai’s deep excavation engineering. On the basis of engineering practice of ultra-deep foundation pit in Shanghai, some field and laboratory test, this paper analyzes effects of different ultra-deep soil reinforcement methods and their influence characteristics of surrounding environment. It also summarizes these methods’ sealing effect, construction and economic efficiency and concludes their characteristicsINSTRUCTIONShanghai is formed from marine sedimentation. In Shanghai, from earth’s surface to 30~40m underground, soil is mainly consist of soft clay with 40% moisture content. There are also many thin silty-sand layers in the earth, so the soil is both soft and permeable. Under 40m, soil is mainly thick silty-sand layers and fine-sand layers with medium density and confined groundwater whose water head is about 7m high.With the rapid development of Shanghai’s municipal construction and high-rise buildings in the recently ten years, the number of underground structure including subway station, tunnel and high-rise building basement are constructed rapidly. Due to the permeability and softness of Shanghai’s soil, it is necessary to reinforce soil to make sure the safety and high construction rate of engineering project in Shanghai.Because of deeper excavation depth and bigger excavation area in Shanghai, ultra-deep soil reinforcement is used preliminarily in Shanghai. Combining with engineering practice of ultra-deep foundation pit in Shanghai and employing field and laboratory test, this paper analyzes effectiveness of different ultra-deep soil reinforcement methods and concludes these methods’ characteristics and their applicability. All this can guide further application of these methods."

The accurate prediction of truck productivity plays a pivotal role in improving the efficiency and profitability of open-pit mining operations. However, predicting truck productivity is challenging owing to the complex nature of the working conditions of the mine site. This paper proposes a deep neural network model to overcome the challenge of predicting truck productivity in open-pit mines. The prediction model was built using eight variables and was optimized by considering different train-test split ratios, numbers of hidden layers and neurons, and activation functions. The proposed model's performance was evaluated using various metrics and was compared with other commonly used machine learning algorithms. According to the results, the proposed model outperformed traditional machine learning algorithms by achieving higher accuracy and lower error rates, with the best-performing model having four hidden layers with 70 neurons per layer and a scaled exponential linear unit activation function, resulting in a coefficient of determination value of 0.89. This demonstrates the potential of deep neural network models for predicting truck productivity in open-pit mine sites. Moreover, a single variable sensitivity analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of input variables on truck productivity. The results show that haul distance is the most influential variable for the prediction of truck productivity.

Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is following the lead of the petroleum industry as it strives to tap vast offshore resources. Planning is well underway for the Solwara 1 Project in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea (PNG) to recover high-grade seafloor massive sulphide deposits in 1600 m water depth. The deposit contains an average copper grade >10 times higher than a typical land-based porphyry copper mine. The high grades combined with a relatively small amount of overburden ensure the Solwara 1 Project will have a significantly smaller physical footprint than its land-based counterparts. Offshore minerals production also has the advantage of minimal social disturbance. Nautilus is dedicated to setting a high environmental and social responsibility standard. Nautilus recognises the importance of transparent and inclusive stakeholder engagement and has taken a proactive approach to involve as many key stakeholders as possible. One of the first steps in the permitting process in PNG is the preparation of the Environmental Inception Report, which describes the project, its envisaged impacts and the proposed studies for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Local (PNG-based) and international environmental scientists, anthropologists, NGOs and other experts were involved in the definition of studies conducted for the Solwara 1 EIA and a team of world-leading experts was involved with carrying out the studies, culminating in the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). To ensure transparency, collaborating researchers are free to publish their findings. Following its submission, the EIS was made available for public review and public hearings were held at several locations. The EIS has also undergone a rigorous independent review by PNG government-engaged consultants. Outside the permitting process, Nautilus works alongside government officials to carry out ongoing community consultations. Information dissemination and feedback acquisition has also occurred through the Nautilus website and attendance at a number of international conferences, workshops, and meetings. This paper will outline the leading edge approach Nautilus has taken in completing the environmental impact statement for the world?s first deep seafloor copper-gold mine. In addition, this paper will review the permitting process and the government and stakeholder engagement undertaken as part of Nautilus? desire to ?do it right? in this exciting new industry.
