In the year 1900 about 212 million tons of bituminous coal were produced in the United States. Almost none of this was produced by surface mines (Fig. 1), because there was no large equipment suitable for stripping overburden at that time. By 1915 the surface mines had built up their capability largely through use of the steam shovel to the point that they produced 2.8 million tons of the nation's total production of 443 million tons. Over the intervening years between 1915 and 1970 surface mining provided a continually increasing percentage of the nation's bituminous coal, stimulated by the growing availability of giant surface mining machines, some of which are presently capable of removing 220 cu yd of earth with one bite of their mighty buckets. In 1970 the nation's surface mines produced 244 million tons of bituminous coal, over 40% of the total national production. On the other hand, the nation's underground mines hit a peak of 560 million tons in 1920, dropped to a low of 273 million tons in 1961, and are presently on a very slow rise. Environmental pressures generally oppose surface mining, and have forced coal companies to consider more underground mining in future planning. Also, since strippable reserves are decreasing in the eastern states, an increase in underground mining is expected over the coming years. However, in the western states there are enormous reserves to be extracted by surface methods. Why has surface mining increased, while underground mining has decreased? It's largely a matter of economics. The cost per ton is greatly reduced by surface mining because of the relative ease of obtaining the coal. Also, there is a much greater percentage of coal recovery-nearly 85% in surface mines within the minable area, as compared to an average of about 50% in underground mines. Much surface mining recovers coal that could not be extracted by underground methods because of coal bed thinness, or multiple beds close together, split seams, the nature of the roof, and other geologic conditions. Most of the recent papers read before the Institute have dealt with purely scientific matters, or with experiences in the various phases of mining operations. Very little, if anything, has been said concerning the part played by the human element in the industry. It is now opportune to consider this vital factor if we are to cope with the complex work of the present-day miner and, at the same time, meet the demands of the executive for greater efficiency. It is time we made an inventory of our knowledge to determine if we are absorbing the information so essential to modern mining practice. We must keep in close touch with all new ideas and developments in our chosen field and keep ourselves up-to-date in regard to everything pertaining to mining operations in general. The man who ceases to study ceases to advance. There are men who on attaining an executive chair give up all study, because they think they have reached the pinnacle of success. Modern industrial business, and coal-mining is no exception, demands that executive officers shall be 'live wires' -- men who are not only well-informed as to their immediate duties, but who are closely in touch with all matters of importance affecting the industry as a whole. We may be graduates of schools and colleges, but the training we receive in these institutions is only the foundation for our later work. Certainly no executive officer can know too much concerning the work he is engaged in, and the more he knows the more pleasure he will get out of his work.

"There has been a revolution occurring in underground mining over the last several years, where big headline items such as the Internet of Things (IoT), optimisation, managing data, data mining etc – the list of current catchphrases, goes on. In the end these are nothing new; but the ‘things’ (sensors) are becoming smaller, cheaper and easier to deploy, and the analysis much more powerful as computer processing speeds increase. However, to take advantage of the myriad of devices out there and gain the processing power to analyse and use the data, a reliable ‘conduit’ is needed for that information to be delivered where it can actually be used. That is, a high quality data network.Modern mining is like any other industry in the information age: the access to reliable data is the first, critical step in improving productivity (Stevens, 2015). The convergence of communications onto an IP (Internet Protocol) backbone has been the driving force in enabling the productivity gains in general industry over the last two decades.This paper overviews how this technology has developed as an enabler in accessing productivity and safety benefits, and how it has used access to large amounts of data to manage mining processes underground. Reams of data are useless, but with the reliable receipt, analysis, processing and feedback system in place to use that data, benefits can be realised.Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation, and the importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing. Another emerging driver is the much talked about IoT and data analytics, both dependant on reliable, accurate, high volume data.The author will outline how communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems, and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation and other data hungry systems within the overall mine operation.Mining operations embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to, not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote or automated mining, but also to provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting, particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.How certain mining operations lay the necessary foundations to meet their current requirements, while supporting their visions for a more automated and proactively managed mine, will be explored.CITATION:Kent, D, 2017. Significant progress has been made in the past decade in determining the load bearing capacity of pile foundations. Developments in the means of prediction of pile capacity as limited by soil strength have been substantial, particularly in the use of dynamic methods. The use of currently available equipment, analytical procedures, and practices in the field, will often produce material economies on a job by allowing increased loads with proven factors of safety. This approach justifies the minimum number of piles required for a safe foundation in a wide range of job sizes and soil conditions. To avoid exposing the reader to excessive detail in the body of this paper, technical topics have been covered more thoroughly in several appendices. I. Wave Equation Analysis of Piles Appendix A II. Dynamic Monitoring and the Pile Driving Analyzer Appendix B III. Case Method Capacity Calculation Appendix C IV. Case Pile Wave Analysis Program Appendix D 1 Preliminary Analysis In designing driven pile foundations, there must be a close relationship between design, construction control procedures, driving practices, and the size of the job. Small commercial buildings or residences involving loads that are only a fraction of the pile capacities do not justify the expense of detailed design processes or elaborate construction controls. Nevertheless, some preliminary analysis of the job requirements and a limited subsurface investigation must be made to understand existing conditions and the possible foundation solutions. In other words, it is necessary to determine that driven piling is the best overall choice of foundation.

Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM' KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give's the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation' of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. Work of the Mechanical Engineer-Rock-drills, hoisting-machinery, tramming, pumping, ventilation, dredging, sampling, concentration, briquetting, fume-recovery. Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine analysis. The method, however, requires a good initial calibration and periodic checks on its precision and accuracy. Several examples from minerals processing, pyrometallurgy, and materials science show the strengths and applicability of the method. The limitations and sources of error are also discussed.

CHANGES in mining practices have evolved so quietly and unobtrusively that perhaps we scarcely appreciate how truly startling these changes are unless we cast our minds back so as to compare the past with the present. Such retrospection is, indeed, necessary when attempting to forecast the future, for it is only by carefully reviewing the past that we can hope to obtain an indication of what the future may hold in store. In this instance, it is not necessary to delve into the very early history of . coal mining, as our purpose will be served if the last three or four decades are reviewed, a period that is still fresh within the memory of many of us. These earlier days might be termed the selective period of mining, for at that time the coal resources of the world had not been tapped to anything like the extent they are at present and this condition enabled the owners and operators to exercise selective powers and only mine such seams of coal as could be most easily reached an worked at the lowest possible cost and which, at the same time, would suit the requirements of the market. Carrying this thought of selective mining still further, the miner, who was then an artisan skilled in all the branches of his calling, was able to select or discard such parts of the seam he was working that the co al sent out of the mine was acceptable to the consumer with just the barest minimum of preparation. Compare these conditions with the? conditions prevailing today, when coal seams of medium height, good quality, and readily accessible have been largely depleted and the operator has been compelled either to carry on his operations under much greater depths of cover where the coal is more costly to win, or else to work seams of lesser height or of poorer quality.

The development of welded pipe has paralleled the general industrial development and, in particular, that of the petroleum industry. The petroleum industry's need for high-grade, economical pipeline material to make many 'of its projects feasible has been a significant factor in the development of light-wall, high-grade welded pipe. The modern welding processes, such as high-frequency, electric resistance, flash, submerged arc, etc., have some basically different characteristics. The modern high-frequency weld mill is a complex of specialized equipment that is integrated into a production unit. Each component in the unit performs a specific function in the production process. Quality control must be built into the process on an operating basis and, to maintain the quality required for pipeline standards, must be more than a policing operation. The further development of the welded pipe industry will be determined by changing and increasing demands. The technical and economic views and requirements that will influence the development have to be resolved.

Sensors are everywhere in the mining industry, with sensor information being used to monitor and operate processes. Therefore, when sensor information is wrong, economic losses can occur. Unfortunately, sensor errors are usually not detected till they become large. This is problematic as most calibrate their sensors no more than once a year (Beamex, n.d.). Using principles of data mining, where all relevant information is tapped to glean hidden information, Pothina [8] designed an algorithm to detect errors in temperature sensors in gold stripping circuit in Pogo mine, Alaska. This paper continued his work by analyzing the behavior of the algorithm on baseline data and testing the algorithm in new data and under more rigorous conditions. It also made a change to the algorithm. The modified algorithm performed very well in the new data. It also worked well under the new error conditions. Three types of errors were seeded, a fixed additive error (+ 2%), a fixed subtractive error (− 2%), and a noisy, normally distributed error, with a mean value of + 2%. Artificially seeded errors were detected within about 20 gold stripping cycles. Inherent bias in operation impacted algorithm performance by increasing the number of cycles needed to detect errors. This paper reinforced Pothina’s [8] conclusion that when data mining approach is used, sensor errors can be detected even when they are pretty low. Significant economic losses can thus be minimized.

"ABSTRACTTheoretical approach to estimate the ultimate pile capacity gives a rough idea at the initial stage of design that later on strengthen by the execution of static pile load test at site. The static pile load test is the only best option for the estimation of ultimate capacity of various types of piles. There are various methods based on strength, serviceability, net deflection for end bearing, shaft adhesion, graphical and extrapolation approaches for the interpretation of pile load test data to calculate the ultimate capacity. In this paper an attempt is made to evaluate the best-fit method for the estimation of ultimate capacity of single helix screw pile. The pile load tests on model scale were performed on screw piles of different helix diameter. The purpose of adopting model scale of testing was to achieve a state at which settlement increases without further increase in vertical load. The ground was compacted with dry sand at denser state. It was observed from the test results that extrapolation methods such as Chin- Kondner and Decourt predict the load settlement curve of screw piles very well, however ultimate pile capacity was on higher side which may not be suitable for the strength of helix plate. Decourt approach to plot the pile load data showed clear indication of the deformation of helix due to strong subsurface condition. A modified approach in Decourt method is proposed for estimating the ultimate capacity of screw pile having deformed helix whereas reduction factor is suggested for Chin-Kondner method for the estimation of ultimate capacity of intact screw pile.INTRODUCTIONDeep foundations are used to avoid the soft ground at shallow depth that is not suitable for carrying the structural load. Different types of piles have been used to transfer the load to deeper stratum. The screw pile is one of the new piling method and its use is considerably increasing. It consists of a cylindrical steel shaft with one or more helices at various length of the shaft. The diameter of helices (Dw) is usually 2 – 2.5 times the shaft diameter (Ds). The pile is installed to the required depth through torque and pressure. The advantage of screw pile over other piling system is its quick installation mechanism, high end-bearing and uplift resistance, noise reduction and minimum use of man power."

The effect of various flotation depressants and surface treatments on the floatability of coal derived pyrites in the presence of XIBC was investigated with a modified Hallimond tube microflotation cell. The floatability of pyrite particles which had been cleaned with hot dilute (5%) hydrochloric acid was relatively large. However, the floatability of such particles was reduced greatly by the addition of specific depressants such as calcium hydroxide and also by treating the pyrite with an aerated warm alkaline solution. Although this treatment and these depressants also had some effect on the floatability of coal particles, the effect was much less than on the pyrite particles.

La Oroya zinc ferrite (19.5% Zn, 26.6% Fe, 0.052% Ga, 0.075% In) was roasted with coal under conditions more oxidizing than normally used in a Waelz kiln, and the roasted residues were leached with 200 g/L H2SO4. Overall zinc recoveries of up to 97% were achieved, with 35% of the zinc reporting to the fume after roasting at 1,100°C with a bituminous coal addition of 20%. Under these conditions, 93.2% of the Cd, 13.4% of the Cu, 33% of the Ga, 61% of the In and 18.2% of the Pb were recovered either in the fume or in the leach solution. At 2006 metal prices, the value of the recovered metals is comparable to that obtained from commercial Waelz kiln processing of this residue. Zinc in the franklinite (ZnFe2O4) mineral is reduced to zinc vapor, and, after oxidation, some of the zinc is found as ZnO or as Zn2SiO4 in the roasted residue. Iron reacts to form either hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4), with no metallic iron detected in the roasted residue, and less than 2% of the iron is solubilized during leaching. The residue produced after roasting and leaching is, therefore, much more stable than the residue from Waelz kiln processing and should be suitable for disposal in a landfill.

The metallurgical efficien.cy of the operation has been maintained and attention is now being directed towards the improvement of grades of concentrates and recoveries of metals.INTRODUCTIONIt was on 1st August, 1934, that the first Denver No. 21 flotation cells were operated in the treatment plant of The Zinc Corporation Limited, in a pilot Nant which had been installed to determine the economics of all-flotation as against the then existing gravity and flotation practice.The ore being mined at that time came from the lead lode which consists of a granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, manganhedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, manganocalcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only.A parallel lode, known as the zinc lode, was well developed at that time. The common lead lode gangue minerals-calcite, rhodonite, bustamite-were rare in the underground exposures of the zinc lode. This paper provides an overview of a new method for avalanche control using a high explosive charge placed at the avalanche runout zone: the case charge technique. This new avalanche control technique is well-suited to mountain roads presenting several advantages over the existing methods: minimum deployment time, low cost, reduced probability of misfires, and decreased operation time in the avalanche danger zone. The research work presented in this paper was conducted via large scale laboratory experiments where the detonation velocity and the blast physical properties were measured. During the charge design, several parameters were controlled: charge mass, diameter, geometry, density, and external confinement. In addition, the effective range of case charges was increased by the use of the Mach reflection for certain topographical situations. Finally, field test results collected by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) during the 2017 winter season are presented. The CDOT avalanche control crews have adopted the new case charge as the preferred technique in numerous avalanche locations along the Rocky Mountains roads.

The limited effectiveness of the original hot water process for recovery of bitumen from certain Utah tar sands containing bitumen of higher viscosity (e.g. Sunnyside, Tar Sand Triangle)1,2 indicated that bitumen viscosity strongly' influences the separation efficiency. In this regard, there should exist a critical value of bitumen viscosity above which the effectiveness of the hot water process decreases significantly. Apparently certain tar sands contain bitumen of such high viscosity that even a digestion temperature of nearly 100°C is insufficient to lower the viscosity below the critical value. In addition it seems that differences in physico-chemical forces which act between sand and bitumen are negligible in comparison to the difference in visco-mechanical forces. Predominantly mechanical forces hold viscous bitumen on the rough surface and in the pores of sand particles, resulting in strong adhesion. This phenomenon is a critical feature in the phase disengagment of oil-wetted domestic tar sands with viscosity control by temperature. Besides increasing the temperature for viscosity control the effectiveness of the original hot water process could be enhanced by control of bitumen viscosity with diluent additions. Strictly speaking this appraoch is the only possibility for heavy bitumen for which the high temperature of digestion does not lower the viscosity sufficiently. As a result of viscosity control by diluent addition the digestion temperature can be lowered which is important from an industrial standpoint. Another important consideration is that effective phase disengagement occurs only when the entire bitumen phase has the same viscosity. This means that some time (penetration time) is necessary for complete and uniform dilution of the bitumen. If the viscosity of bitumen, which is a function of temperature, diluent addition and penetration time, controls the separation efficiency, hot water processing of many different kinds of tar sands should be possible, assuming that the sand phase consists primarily of quartz-type minerals.

The treatment of hypersaline waters originating from numerous gold projects within the Western Australian Goldfields region via membrane technology has been assessed. A combination of Ultra-filtration (UF) and Nano-filtration (NF) using Ecotechnol’s modified elements effectively removes the polyvalent ions responsible for the high lime and cyanide consumption as well as the prevalence of scale formation characteristic of gold operations in this region. Through removing up to 98% magnesium, 94% calcium and 99.7% sulfates from hypersaline water with total dissolved solids from 40,000mg/L to 250,000mg/L, Ecotechnol and subsequent independent tests have demonstrated up to an 87% reduction in lime consumption and through the ability to increase the operating leach pH, reduce cyanide consumption by up to 28%.CITATION:Tapley, B, Stoitis, N and Lien, L, 2015. "The challenges facing the mining industry include complex ores and declining grades, together with increasing capital costs and environmental regulations. In addition, future commodity price uncertainty makes investment decisions difficult. Shorter plant lifecycles mean that new projects need shorter payback and increased net present value. With regard to solvent extraction, the introduction of an innovative modular plant design will help to address these issues. The first such modular offering is Outotec’s VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant that uses prefabricated and transportable modules. Reuse and recyclability have underpinned the design concept. The greatest advantage of the VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant is its relocation possibility. Additionally, it is suitable for various metals and plant capacity is adjustable through a scalable modular structure. After a dedicated plant lifecycle, the plant can be dismantled and relocated to a new site. This reuse ability offers major benefits for short-term plants, making them more feasible due to higher residual value. A net present value analysis is made for two examples, a conventional plant with no relocation possibility and a modular movable plant with extended plant life cycle, in order to evaluate the feasibility of modular plants. Results indicate that modular plant design could offer an economical solution with the additional advantage of improved overall sustainability through its life cycle. "The development, in Ontario, of a common industry-wide program for the development of skills for employees in underground hard-rock mining is described. This program is designed to increase the productivity of individual workers by improving their skill levels, while at the same time ensuring that employees are instructed in the requisite safety and health aspects of performing various underground tasks. The program's development through a management-labour-government tripartite approach is described. How this program was coordinated with new Government Regulations on Occupational Health and Safety dealing with mandatory training of underground employees is also outlined. IntroductionThis paper will describe briefly what modular training is all about and outline why, and how, it was developed in Ontario on an industry-wide basis. Simply stated, what's been accomplished to date is an industry-wide program for developing the mining skills of underground production employees.The basic objective of this program is to improve the productivity of underground workers. It involves developing an employee's skills to improve his productivity and, because working productively involves knowing how to do a job safely, the program includes instructing an employee in the various safety and health aspects of underground work. An important and, I believe, distinguishing point about the development of this program is that it has been done with the full participation, cooperation and commitment of management, labour and government.It's of considerable interest to note that companies in Ontario who are now using this program are finding that new employees are approximately six months further advanced in productivity than was the case before its use, and in some cases the frequency of accidents has shown a reduction among those employees who have taken this program as compared to those who haven't"

Spontaneous nodulation leading to growth of well developed glossy spheroids (generally hemispheres) of up to 0.06 cm width in 120 min has been observed during copper electrodeposition with certain levels of glue, thiourea and C1-. Thiourea alone can produce spontaneous nodulation but addition of glue and/or Cl- is required for rapid and sustained growth. In most cases once the glossy nodules develop they consume the majority of the copper deposited; thus, the specific current densities (and hence copper electrodeposition rates) on the glossy nodules are about an order of magnitude or, more greater than on the adjacent planar surfaces. The texture of the adjaoent planar surfaces is not glossy in appearance but is well faceted showing the usual deposition grain structure for such additives. Cathode potentials when spontaneous nodulation occurs are about TOO my more negative than with usual copper electroplating. This fact associated with evidence of extremely high levels of cathode surface passivation based on cyclic voltammograms indicates that the conditions which lead to spontaneous nodulation result from a very tightly adsorbed additive surface film. This film breaks down in specific points initiating the glossy nodules which then grow at extremely rapid rates. Current density is also important in spontaneous nodulation. At equal deposition times a current density of 21.5 mA/cm produced much larger glossy nodules than at 48 mA/cm2. The surface concentration of the glossy nodules was much greater in the latter case, however. The role of current density is still not well understood. The role of it as well as the relative roles of the three additives, thiourea, glue and Cl- in spontaneous nodulation is presented. Preliminary results and some possible correlations of these to help explain spontaneous nodulation are presented. It is believed that tankhouse upsets where cathode nodulation occurs may be related to this phenomenon.
