The Trident Gold Deposit has been successfully developed by Alacer Gold (formerly Avoca Resources Limited) into a 1.3 Mt/a operation in the space of four years from discovery to first gold pour (2008). The current in situ Resource for Trident is estimated to be 5 900 000 t @ 5.0 g/t for 940 000 ounces at a cut-off of 1 g/t or 2 g/t depending on ore style. Production to date (Alacer and previous owners) is in excess of 500 000 ounces. The deposit lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton, where it is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, midway between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz). Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (Eastern Zone, Western Zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro; and thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed primarily at sheared lithological contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies. The initial interpretation of the Trident Deposit was based on steeply-dipping structures controlling the zones of mineralisation, with much of the targeting and drill-testing aimed at this style of orebody. Subsequent exposure of the orebodies has identified a series of shallow-east dipping mineralised systems (interpreted to be large reverse shears) that at their intersection with the steep-dipping structures cause significant gold enrichment. It is postulated that both orientations are primary fluid pathways with the intersection between the two resulting in zones with significantly high concentrations of gold mineralisation (in excess of 300 000 ounces). This new understanding on ore controls at Trident has identified that the thin lode-style shear-hosted laminated veins are continuous for over 1700 m along strike as they step en echelon down-plunge. In addition, a repetition and periodicity to the intersection between these steep dipping lode-style systems and the shallow-dipping mineralised zones (estimated to be 700 - 900 m down-plunge) has been identified which has considerably increased the down-plunge potential of the Trident Deposit.

Problem: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's [NIOSH] National Occupational Research Agenda (DHHS Publication No. 96 115) reports that approximately 50% of miners will experience hearing loss by age 50, compared to only 9% of the general population. The present investigation examines three antecedents believed to be associated with miner's use of hearing protection. Method: A posttest delayed posttest control group field research design was employed to assess antecedents toward wearing hearing protection. Results: Following the initial posttest, miners' attitudes and subjective norms were antecedents to intentions to wear hearing protection devices. Also, intentions toward wearing hearing protection predicted hearing protection behaviors. Approximately six weeks later, miners' attitudes and perceived behavioral control were each significant predictors of intentions to wear hearing protection and again, intentions were positively associated with hearing protection behaviors. Impact on Industry: Our results indicate that appeals to normative influences may be the most effective antecedent to employ when persuading coal miners to wear hearing protection. However, messages designed to impact attitudes and perceived behavioral control were also effective.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the publicly available health and safety policies of 26 mining companies to determine the quantity of health and safety (H&S) practices that mining companies encourage in relation to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. A thematic content analysis of the policies identified elements and practices within the text. On average, companies communicated information on about 7 elements (range 1–14, standard deviation = 3.49) and discussed 15 practices (range 2–34, standard deviation = 9.13). The elements in which companies highlighted the most practices were risk management, emergency management, leadership development, and occupational health. A discussion of the policy trends shows areas that mine sites can improve upon within their Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, in addition to encouraging the use of both leading and lagging indicators to manage health and safety performance. INTRODUCTION Mining companies and their employees are expected to identify and manage risks at their worksites to ensure the health and safety (H&S) of everyone at the site. The primary mechanism in place to control these risks is a company’s health and safety management system (HSMS) (Boyle, 2012). Broadly, an HSMS is a set of standard, interrelated, and interacting elements used to promote and achieve occupational H&S goals (ANSI/AIHA Z-10, 2012; BS OHSAS 18001, 2007). The practices conveyed within an HSMS are expected to minimize incidents, injuries, illnesses, and even save worker lives (Alsop and LeCouteur, 1999; Arocena and Núñez, 2010). In the United States, both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulate and encourage aspects of an HSMS (US Federal Register, 2011, 2010). Many HSMS documents (i.e., Chemical Industries Association, 1995; Health and Safety Executive [HSE], 1995; International Labour Office [ILO], 2001) attribute the source of their basic management system to Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model of continuous quality improvement and organize their practices within this cycle (Johnson, 2002). The PDCA cycle is a well-adopted approach in health and safety management and promotes continuous learning and adaptability (Robson et al., 2007)."

This paper explores the connection between the stresses observed and the failure mechanisms present in the modelled cemented paste backfill. In order to look at this connection, the authors have used a previously developed model to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the model?s strength and permeability input parameters. The results from the sensitivity analysis were then compared to determine what causes modelled stresses and failure mechanisms to vary. Increased insight into the behaviour of the modelled paste will help clarify how paste behaves in the field.

However, there is one difference and it is important, Lead can not only be kept looking young, but it can, in fact, actually be kept young, This results from two things. First, industry and technology are constantly changing. For example, we have known for years that the density of lead makes it ideal to stop gamma rays, but it is only recently that atomic fission as a source of gamma radiation has become an important tool of industry, That makes old knowledge about lead useful in developing a new market for it.

To properly analyze and apply mining equipment, a systematic, current, inclusive, and simple classification scheme is required. This paper provides such a classification for Roadheaders. This Roadheader classification is based on factors, such as the rock cutterhead, the boom type, and the chassis configuration. It first assigns Roadheaders as an equipment type within the larger group of Integrated Excavators. The Roadheader type is then delineated into the following subtypes: the standard, the extended boom, the tunnelers, and the miscellaneous. Next, these subtypes are devolved into kinds, and finally variants and attachments are considered. To resolve inconsistencies in characterizing the Roadheader, cross-referencing is employed within the classification scheme.

DURING the war, the Navy undertook the construction, under my direction, of an experimental gun embodying features designed to lessen the cost and time of production. These experiments were initiated after representations as to their, desirability had been offered by myself, by the Naval Consulting Board, and by the National Research Council. The first drawings were made in June, 1917, and the experiment was completed in November, 1918. For the sake of clearness it will pay to recapitulate briefly the fundamental idea of gun construction. It is well known that if a hollow cylinder is subjected to internal fluid pressure, the maximum stress occurs in the inside layers, the outer parts carrying much less than their due share of the stress. This inequality of stress is more pronounced the thicker the walls of the cylinder. If such a cylinder is pushed to the elastic limit, failure in elasticity will take place long before the outer layers have reached the limit of their capacity. Economical use of the material would demand, however, that all parts of the cylinder reach the limits of their capacity simultaneously. This may be brought about, at least in cylinders of not too great thickness, by producing in. the inner layers an initial compression, and in the outer layers an initial tension. The effect of internal pressure is at, first to relieve the compression of the inside layers, while increasing the tension of the outside layers. If the initial stresses are properly distributed, all parts of the cylinder will reach their elastic limits simultaneously, thus giving a cylinder of maximum strength for its weight. In gun construction as hitherto practiced, this initial distribution of stress is produced either by winding the inner tube with wire, a common English practice, or by shrinking hoops over the inner tube, which has been the standard American practice. Although several studies in combining and bifurcating flows in two-way junctions and splits are reported, deviations persist in the estimated shock loss coefficients (SLCs). Due to their complex nature, more work has to be done to be able to correctly predict flow losses at these locations. In two-way splits, the flow at bifurcation is known to be characterized mainly by two recirculating zones in the downstream branches, whereas, in a junction one recirculating zone is observed immediately downstream of the main branch. The relative flow rate in the branches (quantity ratios) is treated as the only parameter defining the losses at these locations. However, the effect of wall roughness, if any, on SLCs becomes important for mine ventilation. This paper presents the critical determinants of shock losses at splits and junctions at varying quantity ratios. The flow at 90º split and junction was examined both experimentally and numerically for Reynolds number in the range of 1.0×104 to 1.6×105. With a well designed laboratory setup, using precision instruments, velocity and pressure measurements were carried out, by using two scales of wall roughness. 3D numerical simulations for these experiments were conducted by using ANSYS CFX modeling tool. CFD simulations yielded results that are reasonably close to experiments, providing high degree of satisfaction in numerically predicting losses across the splits and junctions. However, comparisons of these numerical simulation results with existing literature standards showed significant under-estimation of shock losses by the standard literature by as much as 50%. A clear rise in the magnitude of shock losses was noted in both the approaches, with increased wall roughness. Based on the current studies, predictor equations incorporating quantity ratios are developed for accurate estimation of shock losses. Further investigations on roughness are needed, before one is able to incorporate wall roughness into the prediction of SLC.

An experimental evaluation of a selective agglomeration process in which an agglomerated coal rich phase was produced as a result of mixing light oil to various raw coal slurries is described. The beneficiation achieved by this method is compared to that obtained bv conventional froth flotation. The results suggest' that oil agglomeration is a more selective process than froth flotation and is less sensitive to variations in feed pulp density. Selective agglomeration has the additional advantage of producing a low moisture content product. The effect of replacing flotation filter cake with an equivalent amount of selectively agglomerated product in coke-making was studied with the aid of a pilot-scale coke oven. The results suggest that the principal effect of such a measure is to increase the bulk density of the charge.

This paper describes an experimental method for the monitoring of diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a dead-ended drift for the purpose of assessing the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 105 ft. (32.0 mf long and slightly downsloping, with an average height and width of 8 ft. (2.4 m) and 28 ft. (8.5 m1 , respectively. The data were gathered for assessing these ventilation methods and for gathering data to support a computer model of the dispersion and mixing processes. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generated pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined. A comparison was also made between personal monitoring and area monitoring. Results of this analysis showed that in regions of high concentration gradients, it was not possible to get good agreement between point sampling and personal monitoring. In well-mixed areas, good agreement between the two methods of monitoring was obtained.

This paper describes a type of ammonium nitrate (AN) produced in a patented experimental atomization/aerodynamic process. This AN exhibits outstanding properties for use as a main ingredient to a new family of AN-based commercial explosives. Micro-particle ammonium nitrate (MP-AN) is produced by atomizing either an 83% or 85% AN solution which has been doped with a two component surfactant NSol 1000 (NSol). NSol imparts some water-resistance as well as provides a means of increasing density and bulk strength. Increased detonation velocities, well in the range of emulsion explosives, can be achieved. The maximum manufacturing temperature is less than 100°C. The methodology has the potential of being environmentally friendly since any effluent can be recycled back into a make-up tank to be re-used by the closed loop method. The process has a small footprint.

The ability to compare explosives is fundamental. Numerous methods are used and while simple conversion factors are often used, the use of TNT Equivalency (TNTe) is not a simple subject as explosives exhibit very different equivalencies depending on whether the pressure or impulse are being considered as well as other conditions. The scaled distance has been found to have a significant effect on the TNTe but due to the difficulty of taking measurements at very close ranges, no TNTe have been quoted for charges in direct contact (Z=0). This paper describes the use of a ballistic pendulum to measure the impulse from contact charges and presents some surprising results that require a two-stage propulsion, as originally described by Backofen, to be explained.

Proximity Detection Systems (PDSs) are used in the mining industry for protecting mine workers from striking, pinning, and crushing injuries when they work in close proximity to heavy machines such as continuous mining machines (CMMs). Currently all Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved PDSs are magnetic field based systems which can be influenced by the presence of wire mesh that is commonly used for supporting roof and ribs in underground coal m ines. In this paper, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterize the influence of the mesh on the performance of magnetic PDSs by measuring the magnetic field difference around a CMM caused by the presence of the mesh. The results show that the magnetic fields are generally enhanced by the mesh which causes the PDS detection zones to be increased correspondingly. It was discovered that the fields around the joints of two mesh sections have the greatest enhancement and thus deserve more attention. In addition, it is found that the presence of mesh can also cause a variation in the generator current. The influence of mesh is characterized by the change in the generator current with respect to the distance between the generator and the mesh. It was found that the generator current change caused by the mesh can be significant (on the order of ten) when the mesh is extremely close to the generator (e.g, less than 1 cm) and is negligible when mesh is relatively far (greater than 0.15 m). The findings in this paper can be used to develop guidelines and best practices to mitigate the influence of mesh on PDSs. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires operators of underground coal mines to equip place-changing continuous mining machines (CMMs) with proximity detection systems (PDSs) to protect mine workers from striking, pinning and crushing injuries when they work around these heavy machines. Although a variety of technologies can be implemented for proximity detection, the magnetic-field-based PDS that was originally developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown great effectiveness in challenging mining environments and currently all MSHA-approved PDSs are magnetic-field-based systems. As shown in Figure 1, a magnetic PDS typically includes two major components----the magnetic field generator and the Miner Wearable Component (MWC). Magnetic fields are generated by injecting a high electric current into a ferrite-rod antenna sealed in the generator. The magnetic field strength detected by an MWC varies with the distance between the MWC and the generator. In a typical PDS, multiple generators are mounted on different locations of the machine. The relative location/zone of an MWC is determined based on the field strengths from different generators picked by the MWC. Ideally, for a PDS to work properly in the underground, the magnetic fields generated by the different generators should be stable and not vary with the environment, as the system would interpret any variation of the magnetic field as a result of the distance change between the machine and the miner wearing the MWC. In reality, however, this is not always the case since magnetic fields can be altered by a number of environmental factors such as the presence of steel wire mesh that has been widely used in underground coal mines for supporting roof and ribs In this paper, the influence of mesh on the PDS performance is investigated and the magnetic field change caused by the mesh is measured.

This study is concerned with the electric potential induced by deformation, fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. In experiments, the acoustic emissions together with electric potential measurements were also measured in order to see how the so-called seismic electric signals are associated with new fracture occurrence and propagation and sliding in case of existing discontinuities. The outcomes of this experimental study may explain why such electric potential variations may occur during the fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. On the basis of these outcomes, their possible implications in geo-engineering and geo-science are discussed. Ce travail concerne 1e potentiel électrique produit par la déformation, 1a fracture ou le glissement du matériel géologique non-piézoélectrique. Aux expérimentations, on a mesuré 1es émissions acoustiques avec le potentiel électrique afin de constater la relation entre les phénomènes de glissement ou de formation et de propagation de nouvelles fractures le long des discontinuités existantes. Les résultats de ce travail expérimental expliquent pourquoi de telles variations de potentiel electrique se produisent durant le glissement ou la fracture du matériel non-piézoélectrique. Sur la base de ces résultats, on a discuté de leurs éventuelles implications dans les domaines de 1a géologie et de 1a géo-ingénierie. Diese Studie befasst sich mit dem elektrischen Potential das durch die Deformation, Bruchbildung und Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien induziert wird. In Experimenten wurden die akustischen Emissionen zusammen mit elektrischen Potentialmessungen gemessen, um zu sehen, wie die so genannten seismischen elektrischen Signale mit neuer Bruchbildung und Ausbreitung sowie Gleiten im Falle von vorhandenen Diskontinuitäten verbunden sind. Die Ergebnisse dieser experimentellen Untersuchungen könnten erklären warum elektrische Potential Schwankungen während der Bruchbildung und dem Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien entstehen. Auf der Basis dieser Ergebnisse, wurden ihre möglichen Implikationen in Geoingenieurwissenschaften behandelt.

ERIC GUTIERREZ, Knowledgescape: Our next speaker is Randy Ynchausti. He's the director of development, Knowledgescape systems division, of EIMCO Process Equip- ment Company. The title of Randy's talk is "An Expert Control System for Phosphate Beneficiation." RANDY YNCHAUSTI: System integration. How does the systems integrator survive when caught between plant engineers, plant management, and third-party engineering firms, and stay within the budget of the corporate goals? I'm not sure that anyone knows how to do all of that on one project. Results are critical when we talk about how systems integrators work with operating people, how the operating people want systems integrators to work with them, and how both groups work together so that at the end of a project, you have been provided with solutions that meet your needs and solve your problems at a fair price. How does the integrator's role change when working with different types of professionals, such as plant managers, plant engineers, engineering firms, or other system integrators? Finally, what is the dynamics of people working with machines and providing services and solving needs? The average number of employees per pound of copper processed has decreased significantly during the past 15 years. I would dare to generalize and say that the average number of employees per whatever unit of measure we have in whatever industry we work in has decreased over the last 15 years. From a system integrator's perspective, there are some clients who lack a bit of internal expertise as corporate downsizing occurs, and that's one reason why we go out to system integrators or third-party vendors and buy things from them to solve our problems. Downsizing really amounts to savings, but more than that, I think Brian expressed this and I agree with him, it also amounts to a cost. Unfortunately, most of us count the savings and none of us count the cost in that approach. It's easy to count the savings, which is one reason why we count it so quickly. Maybe that also accounts for why we set our pencils down so quickly after we get that dollar value. Maybe we should pick that pencil up every once in awhile and refigure the expense, the cost to us, and determine what we're going to pay during the next year or two or three in losing that expense, or that staff. "The operation of flotation circuits is often regarded as a combination of art and science. Expert systems offer a method by which the art may be captured and supervisory control of flotation circuits fully realized. Operating knowledge, the art, can be consistently employed to enhance regulatory control through the judicious application of an expert system. Using an expert system, a supervisory control routine was developed, and successfully implemented, in the copper flotation circuit at Brenda Mines Ltd.The expert system ran in conjunction with regulatory PI controllers on a personal computer. The expert system received assays via an on-stream analyzer and adjusted regulatory loop setpoints as required in real-time. From its commissioning in November 1989, to the end of the mine's operation in June, 1990, the ES was enthusiastically embraced by the operators and attained operating levels superior to those achievable manually.INTRODUCTIONExpert system (ES) software springs from research into artificial intelligence and is currently making significant inroads into business and industry. Proponents of ES's make many attractive claims; they are a means of capturing the knowledge of experts and they can be programmed by non-programmers. To date, most uses of this software in the process industry are in off-line applications, meaning that the applications are not tied directly to operating (on-line) environments. Moreover, in on-line environments, they are typically employed as advisors and only suggest changes. Human operators are required to close-the-loop to the process. Yet, ES's should be applicable to operating environments and, if the claims of the proponents are valid, should also be better than existing tools. As an intelligent controller an ES must use the knowledge of experienced operators, apply it directly to a process and do this without the intervention of human operators. On-line applications have been successfully employed in the closed loop control of SAG circuits (Herbst et al., 1989) and flotation circuits (Hales, 1989). Harris and Kosick (1988) detail an implementation for flotation control at the Polaris Mine."

Blackwater Mine is in the central-southern Bowen Basin, immediately south of the township of Blackwater on the Capricorn Highway. The current open cut operation extracts coal from three main seams, designated Top, Middle and Lower, in the Late Permian Rangal Coal Measures cropping out on the eastern flank of the Comet Ridge. Complex geological structures, dominated by E-W normal faults and N-S reverse faults, have significant detrimental effects on coal mining operations. Historical exploration before 2010 involved several types of drilling only to understand structure, coal quality and washability. Hence, although drilling data was combined with limited pit mapping and observation, unknown structures were still often encountered during excavations and led to mining surprises. In 2010 BHP completed 200-line km of closely spaced 2D seismic survey to capture gross and detailed structures followed by fit for purpose structural drilling to confirm major structures in the northern part of the mine. In 2018 a high density 9.2 km2 3D seismic survey was completed in the southern part of the mine. Subsequently, a 17.2 km2 survey was completed in 2020 to cover the northern active mining area. It allowed geoscientists to successfully map previously unknown major faults and seam splits, which could potentially impact the mineability of the area. It is important to note, that faults interpreted using modern high-density 3D data can be interpreted with dramatically higher confidence in the fault dip and azimuth orientation in comparison to the legacy 2D data. Along with targeted drilling, pit mapping and structural interpretation, the outcome adds value to mine planning and operations. This paper outlines recent successful seismic 3D data acquisition and interpretation. In detail, the paper presents case studies on how the data can be incorporated into a structural model to improve geological knowledge, enable geotechnical assessment, and support safe and efficient coal mining in a large and structurally complex mine.

[ ] A period of heavy rains caused the river Adda to flood parts of the Valtellina, one of the Alpine valleys of Northern Italy. The exceptionally high waters put under considerable strain the whole system of embankments and levees controlling the river and protecting the adjacent towns and lands. In some places the water breached and washed away the embankments, submerging large tracts of cultivated land, buildings, roads and railway tracks. The town of Talamona, in the lower Valtellina, was hit particularly hard: in its proximity the river overrun and then washed away 300 m (1,000 ft) of embankment (see vicinity map, fig. 2), depositing large amounts of riverbed debris onto over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of fertile land.

In recent years, tellurium has been extensively used in the manufacture of semiconductor materials. For this type of application, high-purity tellurium is required. Selenium, lead and silicon are usually the main impurities in tellurium. During the electrolytic refining of copper, tellurium gold and silver are collected in the anode slimes. A pyrometallurgical treatment is used to recover gold and silver from the decopperized anode slimes whereas tellurium is oxidized and skimmed off from the refining furnace as a Na2CO3-based slag. In the slag, tellurium is present as sodium tellurite (Na2TeO3), which is further water-leached from the slag. The first step in the conventional process for tellurium recovery consists of the precipitation of the tellurium contained in the leaching solution as tellurium dioxide (TeO2). The solid TeO2 is then dissolved under acidic conditions for its further reduction with sulfur dioxide gas (SO2). In this paper, an alternative route for tellurium production is presented in which a sodium tellurate [Na2TeO4] intermediate is obtained by oxidation of the sodium tellurite in an alkaline solution following the water leaching step. Sodium tellurate is then dissolved in acid media and high-purity tellurium is obtained by reduction with SO2 gas. Experimental tests under laboratory conditions indicate that the novel process yields higher precipitation selectivity for tellurium than the conventional process. A comparison of its efficiency concerning impurities co-precipitation with respect to the conventional process is discussed.
