(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) PREFATORY NOTE.-The first part of this paper was sent to me by Mr. Emrich nearly nine months ago ; and. I held it, waiting for the second part, which he had promised to forward soon, so that I might submit the whole to some of his former professional associates, and advise him of their criticisms and suggestions before offering his work to the Institute. But, five days before the second part reached me, I received by telegraph the news of Mr. Emrich's sudden death. The paper has therefore not had the benefit of such a revision by the author as might have made it in some respects clearer and more complete. Nevertheless, I believe that experts in the branch of metallurgy with which it deals will find it both original and suggestive.-A. EILERS. I. PARTIAL REFINING IN THE ANODE-FURNACE. During my connection with one of the large New Jersey copper-refineries, and probably before that period, from 15 to 20 per cent. of the copper-bullion received was the very foul, leady blister-copper produced from lead blast-furnace matte. It had been customary to mix a small part of this blister with each charge of purer pig-copper, in the effort to dilute it as much as possible before casting into anodes; but tank-house conditions were such that I was led to try making entire furnace-charges of this blister, and refining it as much as possible in the furnace-afterwards casting to anodes and refining electrolytically, in tanks and solution separate from the main bulk of the purer copper. In making this experiment, notes were made, for several furnace-charges, of everything thought to have a bearing on the question, and some interesting facts were brought out, both in the furnace-working and afterwards in the tanks.

In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

With the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), and the implementation of state permanent programs, underground coal mining operations are for the first time subject to government regulations regarding subsidence. These regulations now and in the future will directly affect the manner in which mining companies mine their coal. Since the promulgation of the original final regulations by OSM, numerous changes in those regulations have been made and many additional changes are pending in the near future. This paper will discuss state and federal approaches to regulating underground coal mines and examine issues surrounding future subsidence regulations.

The Impala No. 1A ventilation shaft is located approximately 15 kms north of Rustenburg and is accessed via the R510road from Rustenburg to Northam/Thabazimbi. This situation is shown on the location plan in Figure 1. The geology at the site consists of an upper layer of black turf of about 1 metre in thickness, grading into weathered norite. The depth of weathering is generally less than 5 metres. Zones of deeper weathering may occur along fracture zones associated with faults and dykes. Groundwater occurs mainly within the weathered/fractured aquifer system. The ventilation shaft is a 5.1 m diameter upcast shaft ,and forms part of a system of ventilation shafts to complement the existing infrastructure as mining progresses down the new twin decline extension of Impala 1 shaft. The principal reason for these shafts is to lessen the risk of an extended RAW and also to counter the effects of the heat build-up as the mining goes deeper, with the resultant effect that the existing cooling centre (fridge plant) becomes more remote from activities. The No. 1A shaft (upcast) is positioned approximately 1,2 km on down dip from the main shaft and the No. 1Bshaft (downcast) approximately 1,2 km further. Geological information was used from a borehole 1,2 km away on strike from the upcast shaft. The first shaft (1A) is a 5,1 m diameter hole to be fitted with two 2,2 MW fans, whilst the second shaft (1B) is 4,1 m diameter to accommodate a 7MW fridge plant.

"Reclamation legislation was introduced in British Columbia in 1969 amidst public concern and controversy. This paper reviews this legislation as it relates to coal mining, and how it is being implemented.Although the principles of land reclamation are reason-ably well understood, reclamation of industrial wasteland has never previously been attempted under such rugged conditions as occur in the Canadian Rockies and a new methodology is being developed.The resolution of the technical and organizational problems involved are discussed and the techniques and experiences described."

In the condition that drilling and blasting technique is inevitable depending on the rock mass and material characteristics on mining activities, the fragmentation rate and particle size distribution of the muckpile after blasting has important influences on the performance of subsequent mining activities such as loading, hauling, crushing, grinding etc. and the total costs of that mine. Drilling and blasting is an important step in this process chain and it's results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. There is an increasing body of blasting research indicating significant impacts in these downstream processes.

The area (330 sq. miles) shown on the map of the Brocks Creek District (Fig. 1), was mapped by the Northern Territory geological party of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia. This work was done in two stages:-(i) In 1935, an area of 30 sq. miles around the Golden Dyke mine was mapped by P. S. Hossfeld, Senior Geologist, and A. H. Voisey, Assistant Geologist. The results were described in a detailed report (10).(ii) In 1939, an area of 300 sq. miles in the Brocks Creek district was mapped by C. J. Sullivan (Senior Assistant Geologist), and V. M. Cottle and S. N. Kiek (Assistant Geologists) under the general supervision of P. S. Hossfeld (Senior Geologist).An outline structural map, together with some geological notes was published (1), but that map does not show the amphibolites, and the relationship between ore occurrence and general geology is not emphasised. The publication of the detailed maps and reportwas postponed indefinitely as a result of war. The original mapping was based on air photographs with a scale of approximately 1 in. to 1,200 ft., and all detail which could be shown at that scale was mapped. Features recorded included rock types, details of structure, mineralisation, and surface workings, creeks and soil boundaries. Underground mapping was also carried out. The present map is much simplified from the original, but it is hoped that it shows sufficient information to reveal close relationship between structure, granite, sills of amphibolite and gold occurrence. About 50 per cent. of the area is covered by deep soil or alluvium, and in these portions the geology of the underlying rocks was not determined with accuracy, though in many places strike trends could be deduced from air photographs.Because the A.G. & G.S.N.A. had published the geological notes and map referred to above, and because the publication of the detailed report and maps is still postponed indefinitely, approval has been given by the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (which took over the affairs of the A.G. & G.S.N.A. at the termination of its operations) to the preparation of the present paper so that information would be available to the public.The views expressed in this report are those of author. The results of the investigation suggest that in areas where granites are predominantly concordant with bedding, ore deposits may be found at approximately the same stratigraphic horizon. It is thus important to correlate beds even though their relationship may have been obscured by faulting and folding.

OVERPOLED copper, as commonly defined, is copper which has been excessively reduced during the poling period of the refining process. Owing to its porosity, such copper is unfit for commercial purposes. The cause of this phenomenon is undoubtedly the lack of oxides in the copper, yet this does not completely explain it. Refined copper of the same "pitch" and "set" varies considerably in oxygen contents, and analyses of overpoled bars also show similar wide differences; moreover, it is possible to melt copper in crucibles so as to obtain bars that are practically free from oxygen although they show a "tough pitch" and "level set" surface. Frederick Johnson advances the following theory: The regulation of the quantity of oxygen in copper is the keynote of all copper refining. It is the presence of a Well defined proportion of oxygen in the form of cuprous oxide, forming a copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, Which enables copper to be cast free from blowholes. It seems that When oxygen is present, other gases are less soluble in molten copper; When oxygen is absent, or is present in insufficient quantity, the copper dissolves other gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, Which are insoluble in the copper when solid, and, being rejected during the process of solidification, causes internal porosity and external ridges and excrescences.1 The "level set" of Wire bars, etc., is entirely the result of a compromise between the occluded gases and cuprous oxide. With excess of the former the metal would be "overpitch" and spongy, While an excess of the latter would result in the metal being "underpitch" and brittle.2 The result of the absorption and subsequent expulsion of reducing gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the effect of this action. on the overpoling of copper are in dispute; the literature on the subject is full of contradictory statements and will continue to be so until better analytical methods have been developed. Sulphur, however, is tangible. The refiner can see it in his button sample and consequently attributes to it any trouble that may happen during the melting of the copper.

F. JOHNSON,* Birmingham, England (written discussion t).--. Mr. Skowronski's first melting experiments tend to show that ingots with a "level set" may be obtained without oxygen. Now it is characteristic of all metals which occupy a smaller volume when solid than they do when molten to "pipe." In vertical-cast ingots, this pipe resembles a horn-shaped cavity, with the wide mouth uppermost. In horizontal-cast ingots, the pipe is a longitudinal furrow along the center-line of the ingot surface. If copper be successfully deoxidized and degasified, this furrow will inevitably be produced. In the author's oxygen-free ingots, it is. clear that gases were occluded and these gases effectively opposed the formation of a pipe or furrow by shrinkage (fluid contraction). It is riot a special property of any particular gas which produces this effect. Hence it is not surprising that the author has succeeded in producing level and overpoled ingots through the agency of sulphur. dioxide gas. That he has counteracted the overpoling influence of sulphur by means of oxygen is somewhat difficult to explain, since the well known reaction between cuprous sulphide and cuprous oxide should result in the production of sulphur dioxide gas. Why the presence of excess cuprous oxide should neutralize the overpoling influence of this gas without eliminating sulphur is not at all clear. It is to be regretted that the oxygen was not determined in the bars given in Tables 3 and 4. It is by no means established that sulphur is responsible for the over, poling of ingots given in Table 4, since carbon was used for overpoling. If, however, the same kind of poling treatment was given as that applied in the case of ingots in Table 1, the responsibility of sulphur assumes more definite shape. The author rightly points out that Mr. Johnson's theory of the equilibrium between gases and cuprous oxide does not explain why a simple addition of cuprous oxide does not correct an overpoled charge. Such a charge must be re-worked to "set" copper. This re-working (rabbling) undoubtedly forcibly removes the excess gases, which are not removable by cuprous oxide.

The Hamersley Group in the Pilbara, Western Australia, consist of interlayered banded iron formation (BIF) and shale host rock formations within which a large number of open pit iron ore mines have been established. The slope stability of most of the mining excavations developed within these formations is controlled by the relatively low shear strength of the shale groups and shale bands, which are the weakest rock types. Shale formations range from fresh to highly weathered and are generally highly fissile when fresh, and clayey when weathered. An accurate understanding of the shear strength of these materials across the entire weathering continuum is therefore a key importance for assessing the slope stability of these mines.Historically defect laboratory testing results for the Pilbara mines have been analysed mechanically using direct shear testing (DST) to measure a number of geotechnical characteristics of the rock bedding and defects. This paper sets out the current practice in the industry in terms of the laboratory testing and presents a possible application of hyperspectral data to empirically correlate the shear strength of shale bedding with the relative mineralogy abundance on the bedding surface. This was achieved by creating both hyperspectral and geotechnical data sets for the same samples.In the study the shale samples were separated into three distinct assemblages: iron oxide + kaolinite, iron oxide + white mica + kaolinite, white mica + kaolinite, which had 40, nine and two samples respectively. Analysing these assemblages alongside DST data showed that samples with white mica had reduced non-variable shear strength, whereas samples with iron oxide + kaolinite had an overall higher shear strength but with a greater variance. It is inferred that the reduced shear strength in the white mica samples is due to the sheet (or plate) like structure of the mineral, giving it a weak stress plane. Confidence in the trends observed can be reinforced by expanding the data set in future works. The investigation also includes a discussion on weathering grade and addresses the question as to whether mineralogy abundances influence these characteristics in Hamersley shales.CITATION:Maldonado, A, Mercer, K G and Robert, A, 2017. Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5. Age of mineralization and igneous episodes

This paper reports hardness and abrasive wear resistance test results from a wide range of WC-Co alloys, varying in cobalt content as well as WC grain size. The results show that the abrasive wear resistance increases with increasing hardness and that the rate of increase is higher for larger WC grain sizes. The increase in abrasive wear resistance was found to be parabolic up to a critical hardness value and exponential above that value. The transition from parabolic to exponential behaviour was found to occur at the same contiguity value for all grain sizes, which suggests that at that contiguity value the WC skeleton becomes continuous in all WC-Co alloys.

The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. An educated man is distinguished neither by his clothes nor by his knowledge; he is replarkable not for the things he says, but for the way he says them. You cannot even stand with him under an archway in the rain without finding him out. He may talk only of the weather. His words and his phrases alike may be simple. -at distinguishes him is the arrange- ment of his words; however desultory his talk, it will be method- ical; he has habituated himself to foreseeing the part to be played by each word he uses and the place to be taken by each sentence he utters. On the other hand, the uneducated man, though shrewd and well-informed, will relate facts and events as they recur to him, generally in disorder; in his effort to recollect and in his attempt to rectify forgetfulness he will pause irregularly, filling the intervals with meaningless phrases, such as "and then ", "and: so ", or 'said he to me", "said I to him"; and even the contipuous parts of his story will be told confusedly-because he has not learned the proper use of words.* My own experience as an editor of technical manuscripts has taught me that the misuse of 'that' and 'which' is a fruitful cause of obscurity and confusion. The relative pronouns have distinct functions, and no writer can express himself clearly until he has learned to discriminate between these I functions. For example:

"New terrain maps provide information on the ground conditions in northern Ontario. This information has a relevance to mineral exploration because it assists the user in determining ground conditions prior to entering the area. The prospector, geologist, geophysicist and geochemist can then plan for the optimum use of exploration techniques best suited for theseground conditions.These terrain maps are the result of the Northern Ontario Engineering Geology Terrain Study-a program carried out by five consultants under contract to the Ontario Geological Survey of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The area mapped is 370,000 km2 and more than 100 basic data maps at a1:100,000 scale will be published.An unique terrain legend was derived to facilitate the mapping and it allows the derivation of specific user information. Examples of some of these uses are described. Introduction""Where did all the boulders come from Charlie?"", asked the student, as the prospector and his young assistant clambered through the bush. "" Why son, they were brought down here by the glacier"", the prospector replied. ""But where is the glacier now Charlie? "", persisted the young man. ""Gone back up north for more boulders son!""An old story, but one that illustrates the importance of overburden to the prospector. The use of overburden as a prospecting technique is not new. In fact, the principles have been known in the western world for at least 235 years (Shilts 1976). More recently, Dreimanis's classic work on boulder tracing (1957) and Lee's work (1971) emphasize the role of glacial geology in prospecting. In addition, papers by Smee and Sinha (1979), Averill (1978), Bereton (1978), and Gleeson and Hornbrook (1974) all describe the importance of drift in mineral exploration programs. The discovery of the copper deposit in the northern Ontario township of Currie (Thompson, 1979) is attributed in part to till prospecting methods. So the significance of the overburden is firmly established, both in the literature and in the minds of today's prospectors, geologists, geophysicists and geochemists."

Lithium is an alkali metal found in brine deposits in the United States, Chile and Argentina, as well as in hard rock deposits in Australia and North America. In hard rock deposits, spodumene (LiAl(Si2O6)) is the major economic lithium bearing mineral. Spodumene is typically upgraded through a combination of dense media separation, flotation and magnetic separation. One of the major spodumene concentrate quality specifications is the iron oxide content because it will help determine if the concentrate is considered ceramic grade for use in ceramics and glass or chemical grade for use in lithium ion batteries. The rejection of iron bearing silicate minerals from artificial ore composites (high amphibole and low amphibole, high quartz/feldspar) from a hard-rock spodumene deposit was investigated using magnetic separation and flotation. The efficacy of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) in iron rejection was found to be dependent on the mineralogy of the iron-bearing silicate minerals including modal distribution, liberation and association. When magnetic separation was conducted prior to flotation, the Fe2O3 grade in the final flotation spodumene concentrate was reduced from ~3% to ~1% Fe2O3 , and improved lithium recovery in flotation was observed. It was determined that it was most effective to conduct WHIMS on the flotation feed after scrubbing and de-sliming because this reduced the required magnetic field to recover iron-bearing minerals, likely because slime coating was greatly reduced. Flotation collector screening of four different collectors with varying rosin acid content demonstrated a potential increase in selective flotation of spodumene over some iron silicate minerals with decreasing rosin acid content in the fatty acid collector. However, due to marginal difference in flotation results with the various collectors tested, further testing is required to confirm the observations made and establish a hypothesis regarding the effect of rosin acid content.

Experiments were conducted to access the feasibility of removing zinc from lead slag by sulfation or chlorination or both. Gaseous sulfation with sulfur dioxide and oxygen released only 50 per cent of zinc even under the most severe conditions. Sulfation with concentrated sulfuric acid by a fast-leach process released 95 per cent of zinc while pug-roasting released a maximum of 78 per cent of zinc. Chloridization with NaCl in the presence of sulfating gas released 50 per cent of zinc, while direct chlorination with chlorine gas and oxygen released 85 per cent of zinc and 100 per cent of lead in a chloride condensate containing little impurities.

The report is too voluminous to be considered in detail within the scope of a single paper, so I will confine my consideration of it to the broader aspects, leaving other members to deal with points of particular interest. The method of presentation leaves one with an uneasy sense of prolixity and confusion of thought; the foreword by the Chairman may well be accepted as a true index of the whole. His argument amounts to this: Recognizing at the outset the futility of divided counsels, it was deemed advisable to arrive at unanimity. To this end, some members subscribed to views to which they do not whole-heartedly assent, thus giving weight to conclusions with which they were at variance. Unanimity cannot be qualified-either it exists or is absent-and, moreover, in the text of the Com-mission I can find no word that unanimity is required. Surely it would have been preferable to have a unanimous report covering such aspects as were acceptable to all members, with minority reports by individual members on such other aspects as were controversial, leaving it to the Government to give such weight to the divergent views as the personality of their sponsors might warrant. In the final analysis the value of an opinion varies directly as the personality of its exponent.
