OUT of the fabulous iron ranges of Michigan?s Upper Peninsula since Pearl Harbor have come go to the steel mills to become tanks, guns, ships, and other weapons for a United Nations' victory. But the contributions to the war effort, as far as Michigan's iron country is concerned, do not stop there. The same men who mine iron ore deep inside the earth also are "mining" on top of the ground, gleaning a harvest of scrap iron and steel that is writing a big chapter in the War Production Board's salvage program. At virtually every mine over an area of a hundred square miles, everyone from the top mine official and straw boss to the man in the dippings is scrap conscious. They know the importance of the ore they mine but they are equally familiar with the importance of iron and steel scrap in war production. The successful job they are doing in salvage is a tribute to the entire Upper Michigan mining industry and to the man who marshaled them into action-John M. Bush, chief of the land department for the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, and for ten years an A.I.M.E. member. Also, this job should be an inspiration to 611 mining. metallurgical, and petroleum communities as to the latent possibilities of organized scrap recovery.

Introduction The last two or three decades have been marked by striking developments in methods of mining and tunnelling. In view .of increased competition and various economic factors, intensive ' mining has been largely practised, and no effort seems to have been spared to increase outputs and lower the cost of production. In metalliferous mining, the compressed-air rock-drill has effected marked savings in this direction, while in coal mining, the coal-cutting machine has revolutionized mining methods and materially contributed to economical working. Yet, for many years, little or no advance was made in methods of handling the rock, or coal, once it had been successfully broken. Loading by hand is, undoubtedly, the most laborious occupation in the whole of mining operations, and it is also the greatest single item that enters into the cost of production. In view of this, the lag of improved handling methods behind the process of winning the rock or coal is rather surprising. The point, however, was appreciated by mining men, and the introduction of various forms of conveyors and loaders is the result. The belt conveyor, the chain conveyor, the shaker conveyor, and the mechanical shovel entered various parts of the field, but it was left to scraping to provide a method of both conveying and loading. From the pure loading point of view, the choice lies between mechanical shovels and scraper loaders. While it is realised that each of these machines has applications peculiar to itself, yet it should be realised that much work which has hitherto been done by mechanical shovels can be done equally effectively with scraper loaders and at a considerable saving both from the point of view of initial outlay and upkeep.

Recently passed federal strip mining legislation officially emphasizes that the increased coal production required by this country through surface mining is going to be obtained only with stricter environmental standards. Dozing overburden down the hillside in Appalachian contour mining or leaving drag1ine spoils in area mining is now taboo and it is now or will soon be necessary to return the disturbed land to as good or better condition than before mining. These new restrictions will create a need for new and better ways to do the job. This paper describes one approach for utilizing scrapers and dozers to strip all of the overburden and to replace that overburden in an environmentally satisfactory fashion. The objective was to do this at a lower cost than that possible with the traditional dragline system using dozers and scrapers for reclamation and topsoil handling. In area stripping, the dragline has been able to move overburden at an extremely low cost. Operating costs of 8-13¢/bcy are typical in many operations where rehandling is not required. However, the cost of leveling the spoil piles and rehandling topsoil add considerably to the low basic cost of drag1ine stripping.

Let's start with a bit of History. Before the advent of woven wire screen cloth or perforated plate as we know it today, screens or sieves, as they were called, were probably made by the Greeks or Romans around the year 150 B.C. Coarse openings were made from bamboo or other woven reeds or with holes punched in leather hides, while fine openings may have been made using hair from the long tails of horses woven with small openings. The first metallic woven wire screens were probably produced by the Germans in the 15th Century. All of these screening devices were, of course, hand operated. The first records of mechanically driven shaking screens are found in "John Smeathon's Diary of His Journey to the Low-Country" in 1775. He was the English Civil Engineer who built the famous Eddystone Light House and discovered the formula for making hydraulic cements. He described a screen the Dutch were using as a wooden frame on which woven wire was mounted. This box was inclined at an angle and hinged on the lower end. The upper or feed end was equipped with a pulley so they could raise it up, say 5" or 6", and then let it drop abruptly onto a sill or stop plate, thus jarring the material deposited on the woven wire through the openings. Material that was passed over the deck was scooped up and redeposited on the woven wire for rescreening. This was an early form of what is today known as a recirculating load.

Screening is a critical part of many mineral processing circuits and keeping the aperture of the screening media within specification is vital to ensure efficient performance of the processing plant. Typical ways of estimating and/or measuring the wear of the screening media vary from very subjective methods (for instance, using the human eye) to manually checking the width of a few of the more severely worn gaps with a measurement device. Subjective methods can be flawed by human error while manual checking can distort the polyurethane or rubber materials that are used in several types of screening media. All of these errors can cause either premature replacement of panels or, even worse, poor screening of the material.Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) and Metso Screening Media Solutions (SMS) have developed an innovative method that measures screen aperture using advanced image processing techniques. Field trials of the device are presented in this paper, which shows the comparison between the different methods of measuring apertures. Case studies demonstrate how the system, when combined with ScreenTrack, MetsoÆs industry leading maintenance system, and screening media, is providing users with the best possible screening solutions.

The data in this bulletin were obtained during an investigation of screening practice by the University of Illinois engineering experiment station and the United States Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement between them and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division. Earlier work on this subject includes a study of the general practice of coal preparation in Illinois, made in 1914 and published in 1916,1 and an investigation of Illinois coal-washing methods, results of which were published in 1912 in a bulletin 2 that contained complete information on the methods then in use for sizing washed coal. OBJECTS OF THE INVESTIGATION The present investigation was limited to a study of screening as applied in preparing mineral products with the expectation of obtaining more comprehensive information on screening machinery.

The subject of this paper may seem threadbare to, many of you, but even if I repeat what you already know, just smile to yourself and think how much wiser you are than your neighbor, for it is startling what a number of tipples are erected that violate the elementary fundamentals not only of good design but of practical operation. Possibly a coal screening plant is a simple plant. If so, we treat it like we do a great many other simple things. We treat it entirely too lightly and fail to take into consideration, not only the changes that may occur later, the conditions we may be compelled to meet as competition changes, but even the elementary physical conditions that exist right at the tipple site. If I get too positive over some particular point, don't blame me, but remember some of the heart-breaking experiences we have had correcting these omissions, trying to make a tipple do merely what it was designed to do, when the builder tied everything up in such a constricted space, that no room was left to get the results he must have. Perhaps some of the things will look too expensive. Don't say that you can't afford them. Many of them you can't afford to do without, and when you figure that a tipple is put up for possibly twenty years of operation, you can't afford to omit any reasonable precaution not only in taking care of the present, but in foreseeing the future. We will consider a tripple screening plant, suitable for Western conditions, capable of handling approximately 2,500 tons per eight hours. The largest screen sizes must be loaded into either open cars or box cars, and arrangement provided for screening and loading not less than five sizes of coal: lump, egg, nut, slack, dust, or any reasonable combination of these. As we are considering only the preparation of the coal, we will omit all consideration of the method of haulage, pit cars, methods of dumping, and will take the coal after it is in the dump hopper. The track arrangement will frequently be determined by the ground layout. Our sizes and tonnage can be loaded on three tracks, but four tracks are better. The two outer tracks should be left for loading lump coal, No. 3 track should be left for egg coal, and No. 4 track for loading nut, slack and dust. Where a fifth track can be provided, No. 5 track should be held open only for run-of-mine coal, to act as a storage where emergency coal can, be run, should there be any delay in the screening equipment or in changing cars. Track No. I should be used for loading lump coal into box cars only. Track No. 2 should be used for loading lump coal into open cars only, and may or may not be provided with picking table, loading boom, or both. Laboratory test work, pilot plant testing and plant experience with wet, fine mesh screens is discussed. High frequency, low amplitude, fine mesh, wet screens were installed on the 6th cleaner concentrate stream. These screens produce a 60% oversize recovery split of the molybdenite concentrate that is of leached equivalent quality. The undersize stream is leached with 'hot ferric chloride to remove Pb and Cu contaminates before roasting or shipment to sulfide customers. This plant modification is a good example of using existing technology in an unconventional flow sheet to yield significant cost savings.

ACCURATE ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fine¬ness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by mis-use, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to he actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

Introduction The US coal mining industry is in the midst of a serious economic crisis. To overcome increased operating costs, operators must take advantage of technological advancements in mining systems and equipment. A relatively new concept available to underground operators is that of extending the cutting depth for continuous mining machines (continuous miners). This system is referred to as deep-cut mining, and may be described as mining cuts to depths greater than the standard 6 m (20 ft). Productivity is increased through the reduction in continuous miner tram time since the machine stays longer in each working face. To successfully implement a deep-cut mining system, three problems must be overcome: Exposing personnel to unsupported roof, methane removal, and controlling respirable dust. Remote control cutting The solution to the unsupported roof problem is remote control. Recent advances in remote operation, especially in radio remote controls, have resulted in what is generally accepted as a safe and reliable tool. By installing remote control on the continuous miner, the operator and helper can now be stationed in a supported area. This allows for improved visibility while cutting coal. With this in mind, the limiting factor now becomes the position of the haulage equipment operator. North River No. 1 uses Joy 21SC shuttle cars and Jeffrey 4110 diesel ramcars. These cars are pulled against the bumper of the continuous miner. Thirteen meters (43 ft) can be cut with the shuttle car and 14 m (45 ft) with the Ramcar before the operator of the car is inby permanent supports. By loading away from the bumper, about 1.5 m (5 ft) can be added, bringing total cut depths up to 14.5 and 15 m (48 and 50 ft), respectively. Methane removal The second problem involves methane removal, and the line curtain-to-face distance. In other words, how to maintain the line curtain to allow sufficient ventilation to remove methane and not expose workers to unsupported roof. The solution, in most cases, is to use a blowing-type ventilation system. Unlike the exhausting system that, to be effective, must be installed within 3 m (10 ft) of the working face, the blowing system can be effective at greater distances from the face. Numerous studies have documented the advantages of a blowing-type ventilation system over an exhausting system. Furthermore, a blowing system can be significantly improved by in¬creasing the velocity of the air delivered without increasing the volume of air. With this greater ventilation efficiency, it is possible to secure ventilation plan approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for a greater curtain set-back distance. This eliminates the need for personnel to travel inby permanent supports to extend the face brattice. The distance from the face MSHA will approve, however, is on a mine-by-mine basis. MSHA will evaluate the particular mine's face methane liberation rates, along with the specific proposals regarding face ventilation volumes and velocities. Dust control The third problem is controlling respirable dust. This is actually a result of the solution to the second problem. In the blowing system, while mining on the slab cut, both the continuous miner and haulage units are located on the dusty side of the line curtain (Fig. 1). In the early 1970s, underground operators virtually abandoned this system, in order to comply with the 2 mg/m3 (0.87 gr per cu ft) federal dust standards. Adequate ventilation of coal mine working faces is the single most important technique for controlling respirable dust and methane. Choosing the right technique presents some tough questions. Bureau research has shown that to control respirable dust you must contain the dust near the face, keeping rollback (turbulence) to a minimum. For methane the most effective approach has been to use a blowing brattice or tubing and to create turbulence and disperse the face methane, allowing it to pass over the machine and into the return. It is immediately apparent that the two approaches may counteract one another, thus complicating the decision as to which system may be best for a given situation. At present, Bureau research has developed two successful machine-mounted face ventilation systems to meet these different needs and allow deeper cutting. The fan-powered dust scrubber is designed to control dust primarily associated with blowing face ventilation systems. The spray fan controls methane on exhaust-ventilated sections.

Scrubbing of simulated copper reverberatory furnace gases containing 1.0 percent sulfur dioxide with the minus 74 ~m fraction of the San Manuel tailings has shown sulfur dioxide removals of almost 100 percent over an effluent pH range of 3.1 to 4.6 and a wide range of liquid to gas ratios with absorptions of 11 to 17 Kg of sulfur dioxide per tonne of minus 74 um slimes. The high reactivity of the tailings slimes with S02 indicates that the reaction rate is not controlled by the slow dissolution of calcium carbonate in sulfurous acid which characterizes scrubbers using ground limestone. The interpretation of these results has been considerably enhanced by wet chemical analysis and emission spectrographic analysis which show that calcium and iron account for about 90 percent of the SO2 absorption with the rest being accounted for by aluminum, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Mineralogic examination confirms the, chemical and spectrographic analyses showing that the major constituent removed from the slimes is calcium carbonate, with lesser amounts of chlorite and montmorillonite (silicates containing iron, magnesium, aluminum, and calcium) being removed.

Evidence abounds for sea-level change having occurred throughout geological and recent time. Driven by climatic changes, by cycles of glaciation and deglaciations, and by tectonics the position of sea-level relative to the crust has been going up and down since oceans first formed. Rates of these differential movements have been as high as 10 mm/year during the last major deglaciation as sea-level rose by about 150 m in about 15000 years. Tectonic processes can also produce change in sea-level relative to the crust of several mm/year as in, for example, the uplift of the Huon Peninsula in Papua New Guinea. To understand what is happening to sea-level today and what may be happening in the future it is necessary to understand the geological and climatic processes that have caused sea-level to change in the past and the best laboratory for the study of these processes is the geological and geomorphological record. Evidence for observations of sea-level change throughout Late Pleistocene and Holocene time is plentiful in the Australian region. Temporal variability is characterized by a low-stand, at more than 100 m below the present level, at about 20 000-18 000 years ago followed by a rapid rise and transgression of the continental margin up to about 6000 years ago. After this time sea-levels remained within a few metres of their present value but the patterns of change are not everywhere the same. The depth of the low stand at about 18 000 years ago does not appear to have been the same everywhere. Nor does the time at which sea-level first reached its present value appear to have been everywhere the same. The fluctuations about present sea-level during the past 6000 years appear to have been different in different localities. As yet there has not been a wholly satisfactory quantitative explanation for this spatial variability. How much, if any, is indicative of vertical tectonics? How much is the result of the Earth's response to the changing surface loads as mass is exchanged between ice sheets and the oceans? Can any of it be attributed to past changes in global climate? Or are the observations just wrong?

"With maintenance costs rising and an increasing demand for higher production, the use of sealed spherical roller bearings can reduce maintenance costs while providing increased production uptime. The sealed spherical bearing has increased bearing life by slowing the ingress of contamination. This paper will describe how contamination and bearing wear is reduced by reviewing case histories from coal and metal mines that improved their production by decreasing downtime using sealed spherical roller bearings. INTRODUCTION The spherical roller bearing (SRB) is a robust rolling element bearing that can accommodate high radial loads, low to moderate axial loads, and misalignment with no loss in carrying capacity. (i.e. Figure 1) Because of these characteristics, it is a favorite in mining applications and many other heavy industry applications. Primary applications are the various pulleys on conveyors. Coal and hard rock mines have hundreds of miles of conveyor lines and countless head, tail, drive, and idler pulleys. Maintaining the bearings on these pulleys and replacing bearings that have failed can be a huge expense to a mine in components, labor and downtime. Ideally, the bearings are replaced when the pulley is changed out according to the maintenance cycle, about every 4 years. Reality, however, causes the bearings to be changed out every year, or sooner. These premature bearing replacements can cause production shut downs for as long as 8 hours. Conveyor pulleys have been targeted at many mines as the single biggest maintenance pain point.The primary reason for replacing conveyor bearings is internal wear from fine, solid particle and water ingress through the bearing housing seals. (i.e. Figures 2 & 3) Traditionally, the bearing is mounted in a split pillow block housing (SAF, FSAF, SDAF or SNL are typical industry styles) with only labyrinth seals (LER/LOR) for protection against the ingress of contaminants. The bearings are lubricated with grease. A common way to extend the MTBR is to purge the bearing system with large quantities of grease to flush out the contaminants. If the bearing, and thus the housing seals are not frequently purged with grease, fine solid contaminants enter the housing and bearing through the labyrinth cavities."

In spite of the extensive research and accumulated experience from mining operations, an appropriate pillar design remains an open issue. Due to the shrinking reserve base, present mining operations move to more challenging conditions. There are usually thinner seams and geologic conditions are often unfavorable. For instance, mine roof and floor are weak or deteriorate rapidly when exposed to moisture fluctuations in mine atmosphere. It is common that pillars of current operations are more- squat than several decades ago when the bulk of pillar research have been carried out in thicker seams. The methods of pillars calculations were developed regionally (in particular countries) to suit design needs for the most important seams, from which the majority of coal production was coming (e.g. Pittsburg or Pond Creek seams in the eastern of US). Most of the pillar formulae use similar approach by assigning weights (using constants) to the influence of coal (seam) strength and pillar widthheight ratio on its final strength. That mechanistic approach has sound theoretical base and good data supporting its validity. However, what seems to be missing is a qualification system of the mine conditions, which are outside of the data base or do not comply with the theoretical model applied in pillar strength formulae. This paper attempts to address that issue in two major categories, first when only a drill core data are available, and second during the mine development observations can be made directly on a coal seam. The composition of a coal seam is also addressed, (which often changes rapidly across the reserve), and discussed its influence on pillar's structural performance. In summary a set of practical design rules is presented.

The emission of seam gases into underground workings in coal mines is acknowledged as a major hazard, particularly methane due to its possible ignition. Acknowledge of seam gas parameters is important for the prediction of gas emission rates into the ventilating air current. They are also important as the basis for the evaluation of the likely contained gas as a possible energy source.   Gas content determinations for the Kupakupa seam have been made at the Huntly West Mine.  Applying the method of Creedy (1986) to face samples, gas contents of 1.80 and 1.66 have been determined. Using desorbed and residual gas content data a content of 1.92 m3/t has been derived. These are on an ash included basis. Calculations using the adsorption equation of Kim (1977) and coal quality have given a gas content of 2.19 m3 t. Long-hole exploration drilling at Huntly West Mine has provided information on gas pressure. A pressure rise test has given a reading of 500 kPa (absolute); this is low compared with the pressure given for the determined gas content from theoretical adsorption isotherms.

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. "There are substantial challenges in the exploration of magnetic materials in the R-TM-X system (R =rare earth, TM= transition metal, X =stabilizing element) where Xis an element which has high vapor pressure, high reactivity, toxicity, or a refractory nature. This research focuses on discovering new phases with high anisotropy and high magnetization through closed diffusion couples inside high purity Fe crucibles. Either vapor-solid reactions or powder metallurgy techniques are then employed to isolate a stoichiometric sample based on a potentially magnetic phase found in the diffusion couple. For this research, X = F, Ca, Sr, Se, Zn, Bi or Cd, TM= Fe, and R = Nd. New ternary phases have been discovered with WDS and EDS, and magnetic transition temperatures have been measured with a SQUID magnetometer and VSM.IntroductionSince the discovery of the RCo5 compounds in the 1960s, rare earth- transition metal (R-TM) magnets have been the main focus of permanent magnetic research over the last five decades. Iron-based magnetic materials were studied next in attempts to avoid the unstable price of cobalt as well as the high price of Sm, the top performer in the RCos and RzC011 series. This hunt eventually led to the discovery of Nd2Fe14B with a theoretical BHmax of 64 MGOe, nearly double that of the previous samarium based magnets. The next few decades were devoted to enhancing the magnetic properties ofNd2Fe14B by the improvement of processing techniques and the additions of alloying elements. The only complete elemental substitution discovered in this system was R1Fe14C, which did not improve magnetic properties. It is probably safe to say that most ternary R-TM-X systems, where Xis any element that may stabilize a ternary phase, have been investigated if they may be prepared by conventional processes such as arc or induction melting. The present study offers a systematic approach to developing a novel diffusion couple technique in which the volatile, reactive or toxic alloying elements are laser welded inside a high purity Fe crucible. This experimental setup will prevent the oxidation of the rare earth element, as well as contain the volatile X element. As the goal of the research was to find new rare earth permanent magnets, only phases which contained greater than 60 wt% Fe were investigated. 247"

Various kinds of sediment-hosted polymetallic sulfide deposit are known on land in ancient marine sequences, many tending to be larger and more valuable than massive sulfide deposits genetically associated with volcanic host rocks. Often such deposits are attributed to subhalative or shallow sub-seafloor precipitation processes, and structural control by faulting is commonly evident. Apart from the famous but anomalous Red Sea metallic oozes and several NE Pacific sites (Middle Valley, Escanaba Trough, Guaymas Basin), however, modern analogs of the sediment-hosted polymetallic sulfide category are lacking. Some deposits hosted by volcaniclastic rocks, such as JADE (Okinawa Trough) and Suzette (Eastern Manus Basin) are strictly sediment-hosted, but their formation is associated with the igneous activity and they are better considered a variant of the more abundant volcanic-associated polymetallic sulfide deposits.

INTRODUCTION For various reasons I have not specified the locality where the research indicated in the following pages was undertaken. It will suffice to say that it was on the grounds of a villa once remote from, but now completely surrounded by, its neighboring city, and in close proximity to an industrial establishment of great extent and importance manufacturing many kinds of steel articles and employing upwards of thirty chimney-stacks for power and process work. The problem was to discover the cause or causes of the mortality to trees and plants on the place, and to trace these causes to their origin. Before undertaking this experimental work, the bibliography accompanying this paper was compiled and studied. It appears from an examination of the careful scientific work performed by the ablest French, German, and English chemists during the last 25 years that they are unanimous in assigning the principal-in fact, the overwhelmingly predominant-cause of the destruction of vegetation to sulphur oxides, resulting either from direct- oxidation of sulphur in oil of vitriol works, etc., or from the oxidation of the sulphur from the minerals associated with commercial coal. Schröder and Schertel showed in 1884 that the sulphates deposited upon the leaves are not injurious to the plants; and Freytag proved that free sulphuric acid could not be found
