THE case of Henry Cort comprises: (1) the nature of Cort's inventions;, (2) their value to England and to mankind,; (3) the remuneration received therefor by him or his family; and (4) the suitable permanent record and recognition of his services by the representatives of the art lie founded-a debt long over-due, and still unpaid. I. CORT'S INVENTIONS. Under this head, it is unnecessary here to enter into details. The facts have been repeatedly published, and a brief outline of them will be sufficient for my present purpose. . Henry Cort, born in 1740 at Lancaster, England, became a navy broker in. Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

This paper will describe the experience gained and explain the deductions made from the phenomenon of the great squeeze which occurred at Brule Mines. The first indication of the commencement of the squeeze was the breaking of posts on the high-side rib of the slope. At first we thought this was due to a lateral pressure only, and we renewed the broken posts with new ones, the result being that the new posts also were soon broken. A noticeable bending and breaking of the collars occurred, with a corresponding reduction in the height of the haulage slope. These symptoms were also evident on the counter above the slope, indicating that the trouble was of an exceptional nature. In the meantime, we had concentrated a large force of repair men, renewing broken timbers and brushing the roof and floor, but in spite of all our efforts we could not overtake the damage being done. Our next problem was to find the cause of this trouble. We were in a new basin of coal (No. 2) which had only been opened a few months, as we had worked the previous four years in another basin (No. 3) where no such trouble as this had ever been encountered. Naturally our first thought concerned the adequacy of the size of the pillars. We had worked in the No. 3 south basin for the previous four years. without any such experience, with 60-feet pillars between slope and counters; whereas we had established 100-foot pillars in the No. 2 south basin between the slopes and counters with an 80-foot pillar between counter and first line of cross-cuts, and 100-foot pillars between the breasts.

The phenomena of nature cannot present themselves to any thinking wild without claiming from it some solution. The earth, as it has often been observed, is laid out like a well ordered cabinet, presenting to us, in measure, some means of judging how the laws of nature and the essential properties of matter have worked out all we see before us. "That there have been depositions of strata gradually laid down aud stocked with the remains of the living objects, vegetable and animal, that flourished when they were being imposed, is an universally acknowledged fact. It speaks of a constantly maintained series of operations whereby the globe has been brought to its present condition, and which are ever advancing it to stages that are still before it. That immeasurable ages have been consumed in effecting these developments is also conceded. We witness the very graduated rate of the existing advances and can see that the past action must have been conducted in the same slow deliberate manner. There are many questions, however, upon which inquirers are not agreed, hence they are still within the domains of fair discussion.What has led to those great climatic changes whereby the same portions of the earth have had at various times climates that were glacial, temperate, and tropical? What causes the constant contortions and dislocations of strata and the upheaval and depression of land levels, and that there is a tendency to alternation in the parallel areas undergoing opposite kinds of movement as if the sinking of one area balanced the rIsing of another? What is the reason that the centres of volcanic action are continually shifting, and that the line of greatest activity is always upon the rising areas? That portions of the earth have been subjected to intense alid long continued volcanic action, and again to long periods of repose, and that the periods of activity and repose are·recurrent at long intervals of time? What the mountain chains of the world are in broadly parallel bands? What has caused the stratified rocks to be tilted from their original?

The CH Leaching process is a new, more sophisticated, form of gold, silver, uranium and sulfide copper heap leaching wherein each layer of a multi-layered heap is divided into a number of independent cells, each of which are successively formed and leached in the top layer of the heap to their maximum economic recoveries, and then rinsed and sealed from further leaching. Triangular earth berms form the outside walls of the heap and a gridwork of rock-filled berms on top of the bottom pad form independent under- heap solution storage zones. The high degree of solution recirculation and staging that occurs in this process produces a relatively small volume of very rich pregnant solution. The cellular heap design and its mode of operation result in a uniform, intensive, long-term leach for all of the ore particles in the heap. Besides improved metal recoveries, the process appears to have several cost and operating advantages. In the CR2MR process, sulfuric acid and a soluble sulfide are added to a gold and/or silver pregnant leach liquor to precipitate most of the contained silver, mercury, copper, etc. as sulfides at a pH below 2.5. The other product of the reaction is solubilized HCN. Following a liquid-solid separation step, cyanide is regenerated in the supernatant solution by raising the pH to a level above 9.0. This process regenerates a portion of the cyanide used in the leaching step, removes contaminant ion species (silver, copper, mercury, etc.) from the leach solution and, in a subsequent step, recovers the gold in an enriched form. It is believed that substantial cost savings may be experienced by the use of this process in some gold and/or silver leach systems.

In the field of grouting, practitioners fre¬quently advocate procedures that are often unique and contradictory. As a result there has been considerable debate as to what constitutes optimum grouting practice. A knowledge of both the rheological properties and the flow characteristics of grouts is essential to the development of a rational understanding of the grouting process. Flow models and viscosity experiments have been conducted using cement grouts comprising High Early Strength Portland and Microfine cements. The addition of superplasticizers was found to enhance the flowability of the grouts as well as to reduce the effective groutability ratio. Steady state flow equations and design charts for predicting the radial penetration of cement grouts have been developed.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Not only is 1971 the Centennial Year of the AIME, but it also marks the One Hundredth Anniversary of the United States Portland Cement Industry. On September 26th in 1871 David O. Saylor of Allentown, Pennsylvania, received his patent Numbered 119,413 for the manufacture of portland cement. "Cement" had been used in the United States before that. This was, however, natural cement - a direct product of rocks as found in nature, usually burned at low temperatures in open kilns. During the early 1800s this natural cement played an important role in such projects as the building of the Erie Canal. It was only after the Civil War that small amounts of high priced portland cement was imported from Europe. The successful use of this material in construction led to Saylor's experiments and subsequent patent for the manufacture of a scientifically controlled product in this country. These one hundred years have witnessed four major "ages" of cement . . . three of them occurring in the last quarter century since World War Two. The first age was the "Age of Development", a seventy-year period which saw the growth of cement and its concrete end uses as major construction materials. Next followed a period called the "Age of Demand" when, after the war, cement became in short supply relative to large building requirements. In effect a cement shortage existed. The decade of the Sixties proved to be the "Age of Reaction", with its courses of action coming in response to the problems that arose when the industry's expansion programs provided too much capacity. Today cement, and the concrete industries, find themselves entering the "Age of Reason". Two major types of economic secondary iron ores occur in the banded iron formation (BIF)-rich Hamersley Province of the Pilbara, Western Australia:dominant BIF-hosted bedded iron deposits (BID)detrital ore deposits (DID sensu lato), which are mainly hosted in the three province-wide Cenozoic sequences that include coeval non-ore sediments and comprise:a. the major Miocene, fluvial channel iron deposits (CID)b. the lesser Eocene and Pliocene detrital iron deposits (DID sensu stricto).Striking differences exist between the massive CID resources and the much smaller underlying and overlying DID. CID are essentially riverine alluvial ooidal rocks with abundant small fossil wood fragments and variable iron peloids, but with only extremely rare recognisable lithic remnants. The original matrix is typically ramifying layered goethite. Eocene DID are mainly alluvial with minor pisoids, whereas Pliocene–Quaternary DID are dominantly coarse colluvial gravels, both derived from and largely retaining the original textures of BID, hard cap or variably ferruginised surface BIF. The colluvial DID matrix is typically ferroan-aluminous soil, resulting in canga where replaced by goethite, which may be dehydrated to hematite by exposure. The Cenozoic deposits occur in two dominant geomorphological environments: the southern Marra Mamba to Brockman Iron Formation strike valleys containing all three Cenozoic sequences and the much later northern Brockman Iron Formation plateau valleys that include only the Miocene and Pliocene sequences. The Cenozoic detritals formed in different climatic regimes, with an extended dry period forming a prominent province-wide dehydrated carapace on the Eocene DID. The Miocene ‘optimum’ followed with its thick scrub-covered deep regolith that produced the fossil wood-rich CID and was succeeded by the arid cool period of the Oakover limestone/calcrete. A major renewal of exposure and erosion in the Pliocene resulted in the extensive iron gravels of the Pliocene–Quaternary.CITATION:Morris, R C, 2015. "The Central Mukur deposit was discovered by the Semipalatinsk Geological Exploration Expedition (GEE) during detailed searches from 1977 to 1980. Andas Altyn Ltd., a Kazakhstanian gold mining company acquired the property and commenced mining in 1995. In 1998, Andas-Altyn Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corporation.The Central Mukur gold project covers a linear series of parallel, discontinuous zones of near surface oxide gold mineralization that covers a distance of 7 kilometers and extends past the property boundaries. The oxide gold mineralization is a result of the regional oxidization of a primary sulfide gold mineralization emplaced in a series of shallow dipping thrust faults. Resources as calculated by the GEE are 3.45 mt at an average grade of 1.84 gmt Au in the C1 +C2 category and 7.52 mt at an average grade of 1.80 gmt Au in the P1 category. The Central Mukur Gold Heap Leach Mine consists of an open pit, heap leach pads, and an ion exchange resin gold recovery plant. Limited gold production (<2,500 ounces/year) has been achieved over the past three years leaching run of mine oxide gold mineralization. Gold recovery utiling cyanide to dissolve the Au and ionic resin technology to recover the Au for the leachate is approximately 60%. Loaded resin is shipped to a treatment plant at Almaty where the gold is stripped from the resin, refined and sold.This paper will describe the geology, mining, and processing of the Central Mukur ore. In addition, it will describe what it is like doing business in Kazakhstan and the transition from a Soviet style operation to a more western style operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Central Mukur Mine is owned and operated by Andas-Altyn Ltd. a Kazakhstanian gold mining company located in northeast Kazakhstan. Andas-Altyn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corp., a Canadian public company listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. The Central Mukur mine consists of a small open pit, and a heap leach operation that utilizes ion exchange resin to recover gold from pregnant solutions. In addition to the Central Mukur mine, Eurasia also owns the Myaly heap leach gold project which is also operated by Andas- Altyn Ltd."

I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants&apos; unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today&apos;s public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,&apos; many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, Colombia&apos;s position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. By way of background: ? The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in Northeast Colombia, about 90 miles from the coast, as shown in Figure 1. ? In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port, which form a modern, efficient and integrated system. ? The Project is embodied in a 50/50 Association Contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally and Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of both partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. ? The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2-3 billion tonnes&apos;) of high quality bituminous coal. ? Exports began in the first quarter of 1985 at modest levels through what we call Early Coal Facilities, designed and constructed apart from the permanent coal handling system. ? Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt per year in 1939. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth n production into the 1990s appears feasible.

In practice, geochemical analyses can be grouped in two broad categories according to their aim. Those that seek to determine the exact chemical composition of geological materials fall under the heading of assays, whereas applied geochemistry concerns itself with the detection of anomaly contrasts. Recent trends have blurred the distinction between both approaches for many users, as methods that were traditionally used for assays are being adopted in applied geochemistry and assays make increasing use of instrumental techniques. Nevertheless. it is important to keep a clear distinction between the two types of analyses because it has immediate practical consequences, cost is the most obvious, as well as fundamental implications. In the broadest terms, the goal of geochemistry is to strike an optimal balance between throughput and accuracy, at the lowest reasonable cost, while assays strive for accuracy. Traditionally, complete silicate analysis has been the concern of assayers whereas exploration geochemists have been more interested in base metal analyses where acid extractions of the elements, without dissolution of the silicate matrix, has been the norm. This kind of distinction is less realistic now, especially with the growth in lithogeochemical studies, and some overlap in methodology is unavoidable. However, where such overlaps occur the distinction remains in the emphasis of the work. A commonly used example is that although HF acid preparations are used by both, the emphasis in applied geochemistry is on sample throughput and batch analysis, whereas assayers are more concerned with the range of elements to be determined (Thompson and Walsh, 1983).

Are the safety rules in your work place effective? Do supervisors enforce them as they should? Do supervisors abide by these rules? Safety rules are an important aspect of many company safety programs, particularly if employees must work in an intrinsically hazardous environment such as a coal mine. However, for various reasons, supervisors sometimes fail to enforce safety rules (Arvey & Jones, 1985; Hartshorn, 1998). This paper presents some findings obtained from interviews with coal miners about why supervisors sometimes fail to enforce an important mine safety rule. It also contains a few suggestions addressing what could be done to help supervisors perform this job function more effectively.

Since our firm was established by Mr. Price in 1937, we have followed an investment philosophy which is based on the belief that investment in growth stocks is the most assured way of achieving superior, long term investment accomplishment. There are many criteria that we use to select growth companies but the most important is a combination of superior management operating in an industry with above average growth potential. This growth stock approach is the cornerstone of our investment strategy for two of the three mutual funds sponsored by the Price organization and for our private clients. However, during the past 5 years we have seen inflation accelerate due to a variety of factors including the inability of our government to meet seemingly unlimited needs with limited revenue sources. While there might be temporary periods of price stability, we believe that inflation will still continue to be the investor&apos;s greatest problem in future years. Our conviction that inflation would increase combined with the acceleration of inflation in the late 1960s stimulated an intensive investment research effort, on our part, to identify those companies with strong natural resource bases -- who own or control large, secure, and low cost tangible assets. Over the longer term and in an environment of a depreciating dollar some of these firms should be able to develop and sell these assets at higher prices. While we still believe that investing in growth companies is a sound investment strategy to offset inflation, we also believe that certain natural resource companies will show well above average investment performance. In the newest Price mutual fund, The Rowe Price New Era Fund, we have, as a matter of policy, placed a large portion of the portfolio in natural resource companies.

President Kennedy said that before 1970 this country will send a man to the Moon and get him back on Earth safely. Today, no one doubts that his promise will become reality. He who asks "What, then, is next for us in space?" is no longer considered a dreamer. And one of the very first things he discovers in trying to answer this question is that in whatever does come next, geologists and mining engineers will play a prominent role. This will be true not only in the conquest of the Moon, but also in that of the whole solar system. After 1970, it is very likely that a permanent lunar camp will be established. This beachhead, supplied entirely from Earth, in the beginning, will gradually develop into a research complex where virtually all scientific disciplines are investigated.

PUBLIC debts, and the policies guiding public finance in Canada today, are in such a state that every intelligent citizen should be familiar with them, and should be concerned about them. None of you have robe reminded that taxes have already risen to a point where they both annoy and hurt you, but they should also alarm you; alarm you, not so much because of the taxation, but because of the mounting expenditures represented by that taxation. I have no hesitation, therefore, in presenting a paper dealing with public finance at a meeting of the Mining Institute, since all present are concerned,. both as individuals and as representatives of the industry. Moreover, it is important that engineers, particularly, should become better acquainted with the interlocking relationships of economics, public finance, government, and technology. While I am neither an economist, a tax expert, nor a chartered accountant, I shall try to tell you, from my viewpoint as an engineer and an interested voter, the story of public finance in Canada today and of certain causes and effects, and I shall venture certain conclusions. In doing so I may merit criticism by experts, but I will risk this in the hope that sufficient interest will be stimulated in the subject to persuade you, as individuals and as groups, to advance, or to institute, your own studies in public finance, and in turn to interest others. I hope that some of the ideas which will be expressed, or which may develop, will bear fruit. I fully realize that several eminently qualified men have spoken on this subject during recent months, and that many authoritative articles have been written. However, I approach it with confidence, because I propose speaking to you not as an authority, bur as one of you, having similar interests and similar engineering knowledge, who only a few months ago became particularly interested in the subject, studied it, and who now sets before you a summary of his findings, with the conviction that the situation is so serious that constructive planning and constructive action by all thinking citizens are imperative.

"The paper point out of the copper slurry pipelines in South America, providing key statistics, such as throughput, diameter, length, etc. In addition, it will present technical aspects of pipeline design that are unique tomountainous terrain, specifically: choke stations for the control of slack flow, batch hydraulics, automation and training.The pipelines listed in this paper operate successfully at availabilities in excess of 98%. Breaks and plugs can occur due to operator error, but are extremely rare. A review of cross-country slurry pipeline operations worldwide over the last 30 years shows that such a major event occurs, on average, once every five years. Under such a worstcase condition, the downtime rarely exceeds five days. Some pipelines have already been in operation over 30 years, the life span being a function of how well corrosion is kept in check."
