TRIPOLI is a rather unusual form of silica, which thus far has been found in commercially valuable quantities only in the neighborhood of Seneca, Mo., although there are numerous deposits of somewhat similar materials in several southern states. The latter have not, however, attained any position of real importance, due undoubtedly to definite structural limitations which have rendered them less suitable for the particular uses that have given tripoli its principal outlets. Raymond B. Ladoo, mineral technologist, says': "Since that time (1880-90) the term tripoli has with increasing definiteness been reserved for the Seneca material, and other siliceous materials of similar origin and physical properties."

Tripoli is a naturally occurring, finely divided form of silica found chiefly in midwestern and southeastern states and used commercially in fillers and abrasives. The name comes from the location of a silica deposit in North Africa and was applied in the latter part of the 19th century to similar material near Seneca, Missouri. Subsequently, the North African material was found to be diatomite, composed of siliceous skeletons of microscopic marine plants called diatoms, and the material's name was changed to tripolite. The name, tripoli, remained with the Missouri silica, which is inorganic in origin, and tripoli is now used to designate all naturally occurring silica that is similar in characteristics and origin to the Missouri material. Just to confuse things further, in commercial trade tripoli usually designates silica from the Missouri-Oklahoma field, whereas silica from southern Illinois, the other major producing area, is called amorphous silica. Each term, however, may be used commercially for any material, regardless of place of origin that has the characteristics or uses ascribed to material from either major producing area. For example, Engineering and Mining Journal routinely lists under "tripoli," prices "f.o.b. Elco, I11." and "f.o.b. Seneca, Mo. and Rogers, Ark.", and under "silica, amorphous," prices "f.o.b. I11 and "f.o.b. Dierks, Ark." "Soft silica" is another term that has been applied to tripoli from Illinois, west central Arkansas, and Tennessee, presumably to distinguish it from the more compact Missouri material. It has also been used in the ceramic trade to distinguish tripoli from "hard" silica, or silica flour, which is produced by pulverizing silica sand. Tripoli is produced mainly in extreme southwestern Illinois, in the Missouri-Oklahoma district in Newton County, Missouri, and Ottawa County, Oklahoma; and in the novaculite belt of west central Arkansas. Some tripoli is produced for local and specialized uses near Austin, Texas.

The use of tritium in manufacturing and its subsequent loss to the local environment in Tucson, Arizona resulted in a great debate relative to the physiological effects of low level radiation. This paper reviews some of the facts of the release and attempts to quantify the degree of hazard encountered by the local community. Some of the difficulties in assessing the true degree of absorbed dose and the assumptions necessary for calculation purposes are presented.

The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. In a paper which I had the honor to present to the Institute at the Montreal meeting, September 1879,I took occasion to refer incidentally to certain practical difficulties in the sampling of coal-seams {Trans. Vol. VIII., p. 181-3). This reference was particularly to the unequal distribution of sulphur in the form of pyrite, and to the necessity of discriminating between the several members or " benches " of a coal seam as to their relative proportion of visible sulphur. What is a practically truthful estimation of the sulphur of a coal seam, is not necessarily the estimation of an average of sulphur in any given line of cross-section of the seam. Cornparatively speaking, the range of sulphur in quantity is generally so low that errors in its determination, arising from neglectful sampling or from slips in the laboratory, fall chiefly upon this single ingredient. This name is applied to the present mining law, as enacted in 1872 and since, to indicate its leading characteristic—in which it differs from all previous mining laws of this or any other country. The earlier act, passed in 1866, was practically the first attempt of Congress to deal with the question of mining titles upon the public domain. It was framed after nearly twenty years of acquiescence on the part of the Government in the self-constituted tribunals, officials, rules, and customs of the mining districts. In its recognition of these, and in several other particulars, the act of 1866 was open to serious criticisms. It is the purpose of this paper, not to trace the history of legislation on this subject, or show in detail what were the faults of the earlier law, but rather, by a discussion of certain aspects of the present law, to point out how great a revoluition it has effected in the rights of mining locators, and to indicate some of the difficulties attending its application. In the attempt to correct the vagueness of the act of 1866 an entirely new elernent was introduced into the law, bringing with it a new set of difficulties. Under the act of 1866 and the miners' customs which it followed, the lode was the thing claimed and subsequently acquired by patent. And the claim to a given number of feet on the longitudinal course of the lode was rooted in 'a discovery of any part of the lode in any part of the claim. ("Extensions" could in many districts—perhaps universally—be located and claimed on the strength of the discovery in the principal claim to which they referred; but this is a point not essential to the present discussion.) It was not necessary to find the outcrop or the upper edge of a lode in order to lay a valid location upon it. The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by are tenor.

Material handling in surface mines accounts for around 50% of the operational cost. Optimum truck dispatching plays a critical role in the reduction of this operational cost in truck and shovel surface mines. Researchers in this field have presented several mathematical models to solve the truck dispatching problem optimally. However, a critical survey of the literature has shown that three significant drawbacks exist in the available truck dispatching models. The published models underestimate the importance of the interaction between truck fleet, shovel fleet, and the processing plants. They also disregard goals set by strategic-level plans. Moreover, none of the available models account for the uncertainty associated with the input parameters. In this paper we present a new truck dispatching model that covers all of these drawbacks, using a fuzzy linear programming method. The performance of the developed model was evaluated through implementatin in an active surface mining operation. The results show a significant improvement in production and fleet utilization.

Aitik, a Boliden owned and operated open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand production from 18 Mt per year today to 36 Mt per year copper ore during 2010. The challenge for the mine operation is to double production with a planned increase of the shovel and truck fleet of only 50 per cent. This will be achieved through improved shovel and truck utilisation and productivity. In early 2005 Aitik started projects to enhance the utilisation of truck engine hours and to reduce fuel consumption. Both projects were successful, within a year efficient2 utilisation of engine hours increased from 60 per cent to 75 per cent and fuel consumption was reduced by six to eight per cent. The truck utilisation project focused on minimising idle truck hours by for example four operators on three trucks thus reducing idle engine hours to minimise lost time for breaks and shift changes. Other measures included focusing on improved dispatch usage, parking trucks when overtrucked, etc. Eco-driving was a project together with Swedish Road Administration with the objective to combine economical and environmental savings. To keep the focus on eco-driving a reward was set up for the shift team with the lowest fuel rate over rolling 15 weeks periods. Both activities included a comprehensive training program for mine foremen, dispatchers and truck operators focusing on efficient use of trucks from economic driving to optimised truck dispatching and minimising idle engine hours. Online monitoring of trucks activities and fuel consumption combined with continuous reporting gave shift foremen and management a tool to discuss and follow trends and individual shift team performance. The combination of close monitoring of mainly organisational practices and operator training resulted in significant productivity increase and lower operating costs without any capital investments.

A brief history of the significant haulage truck feature changes and the factors that influenced those changes during the 60's and 70's provide a basis for forecasting the changes that can be expected in the 1980's. A review of the impact factors and changing requirements that currently exist that will create changes. Conversion to trolley assist is a means of minimizing diesel fuel consumption, which in many mining situations offers a rapid payback of capital investment plus the inherent flexibility and maneuverability of truck shovel operation. When diesel electric truck shovel mining operation with trolley assist is compared to alternative mining methods such as conveyor systems, the trolley assist system can be easily justified in terms of return on investment, payback and increased productivity. A review of present technology, performance requirements and past experience in the mining industry has led to the development of a trolley assist system for diesel electric haulage trucks which, is proven in the mining environment, offers significant reduction in fuel consumption and increased productivity.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a stochastic simulation program used to assess several dispatching rules applicable to small scale computerized systems for optimizing truck/shovel productivity. The system studied is semi-automated with a dispatcher communicating instructions by two-way radio. The simulation program is structured on an advance clock approach which enables the insertion of dispatching rules at various points in the haulage net- work. The rules tested include minimize shovel idle time, maximizing immediate truck use and assigning trucks to shovels to meet specific production objectives. A variation of the traditional "Match Factor" is implemented to maintain fleet balance throughout the shift. A mine case study demonstrates how the dispatching rules increase productivity of such semi-automated dispatching systems. Practical problems involved in the implementation of small computerized dispatching systems are also discussed.

The selection of the mode of transport for moving bulk materials is never a simple task as there are various concerns/considerations applied to the selection of the most practical and cost-effective mode of transport to be used to move bulk materials. This paper examines various alternatives for moving ore from a mine at the top of a mountain to a process plant below (some 5000 m apart and a vertical drop of 650 m). The terrain of the mountain section of the route has added its own specific requirements, resulting in the final selection of a pipe conveyor for this application. The paper further addresses the final selection of hardware used in the implementation of the solution.

Maintaining fleet productivity, which consists of balancing loader and truck performance, has always been a challenging task. An automatic dispatching system (ADS) is implemented to help monitoring fleet condition and assign trucks to a designated loader. Integrated data from real time Global Positioning System, Vehicle Health Monitoring System, and other production related data are acquired to support the ADS. However, the abnormal truck cycle has been the main culprit which resulted in unnecessary loader hanging time and trucks queuing time. Hanging and queuing time accounted for 2.34 and 2.07 minutes respectively per loading cycle or equal to 2,861 loose cubic metres per fleet per day production losses. Using integrated dispatching system data, the authors conducted research to study a truck’s hauling cycle that affects fleet productivity. The data is modelled to obtain the arrival rate pattern in a front loading area by adopting the queue theory algorithm. This paper aims to understand the potential pattern of a truck’s cycle abnormality and to resolve its occurrence.

Tube bundle gas monitoring systems have been used in the mining industry for over 50 years. The initial design was based on four individual gas analysers along with a series of solenoid valves, gas sample conditioning and flow control mechanisms to ensure the correct gas flow stream volume to the analyser. Simtars staff have identified flow control issues when providing operational support to coalmines on numerous occasions. The accuracy of the oxygen analysis is dependent on control of the gas flow to the analyser. Oxygen is one of the parameters used in calculating Graham’s ratio which is used for the detection of spontaneous combustion activity in coalmines. This paper will provide data which identifies the flow control issues by comparing mine site records for the two surface sample lines in the analyser room and the gas cage. Mine sites will be deidentified within the paper. The paper will discuss some of the changes that have been made in modern tube bundle systems and compare the change to the initial design specification developed by the UK National Coal Board, investigate possible operational impacts and provide a technical fix to solve the current flow issues being experienced at some mines.

"HISTORY Tube bundle systems have been used in the coal mining industry for gas detection since the 1960’s. At the time there were developments were underway for improved gas monitoring systems. The primary gas detection systems in use were the flame safety lamp, colorimetric stain tubes and the taking of samples for analysis by gas chromatography. The MSA D6 hand held methanometer was approved in the UK for statutory methane measurements in 1972 and became very popular due to its smallness and simplicity of use. In 1973 Sieger Limited also developed a BM1 methanometer which could be installed underground and relay methane concentrations to the surface. Similar developments were underway for carbon monoxide detection and one was developed in 1982 by the Yorkshire Regional Laboratory of the NCB commercial development was undertaken by Sieger Limited who named it the ‘SCO1’. The UNOR 1 carbon monoxide and methane analyzers were approved for underground use in the United Kingdom in the late 1960’s.5 The technique was developed by Dr Luft of Bergbau-Forschung Essen and the equipment was manufactured by Maihak in Germany. The apparatus was flame proof and provided an intrinsically safe output which allowed the result to be telemetered to the surface through colliery communication systems. Both analyzers work on the same principal and each of the gases adsorb a certain wavelengths of infrared radiation. The detector measures the residual transmitted radiation and determines the percentage of gas present in the sample. These flameproof versions had proven to be robust and reliable. The UNOR 1 had been used in the Saar region of Germany and Scotland in the UK. The development of tube bundles for hydraulic controls enabled the development of the tube bundle gas monitoring systems we know today. A bundle of tubes are taken underground through a shaft, a borehole or drift then distributed to the required monitoring points. This enabled the ongoing monitoring of the underground environment when the power was isolated at 1.25% CH4. In 1972 the United Kingdom (UK) National Coal Board (NCB) produced a hand book for tube bundle systems which was subsequently updated in 1974. This is a useful guideline into the operational aspects of tube bundles systems at coal mines6. Many of the processes identified are being followed today. The United State Bureau of Mines (USBM) prepared a circular similar to the NCB handbook on tube bundle systems.7 The circular was prepared by Litton C and it was targeted at the design criteria for tube bundle the systems. The circular also states that “pneumatic monitoring systems can be used to monitor for hazards that develop quite quickly”."
