"Wireframe construction is an integral part of resource estimation. Wireframes control domaining of samples and data for geostatistical analysis and grade estimation. They may also provide 3D representations of lithology and grade domains. Thus, the way in which a wireframe is constructed has implications throughout the resource estimation process. Proper construction technique and understanding of wireframing processes should be a high priority in a model workflow. Herein is presented an overview of two main categories of wireframes: implicit and explicit. Construction differences between these two types are highlighted. Factors affecting the choice between the two wireframe types will be discussed, including data quantity, data distribution, and sampling technique. Deposit geometry also plays an important part in wireframe construction. The role of geologic knowledge, cross section orientation, and deposit type in regards to wireframe construction will be discussed. The effect of wireframe type on resource estimation will be examined. Finally, best practices for creating meaningful solids that contribute to a reasonable grade estimation are outlined. INTRODUCTION Wireframes are essential to many types of resource estimations. They provide a way to delineate a deposit into various domains. Domaining can be done by lithologic or geologic units, structures or structural zones, or by grade. Domaining is important for geostatistical analysis and grade estimation of a deposit. The purpose of domaining is to analyze and estimate like data with like. Grade distribution patterns may vary by lithology or by proximity to or existence within structural zones. Properly constructed wireframes are therefore a fundamental necessity to a properly executed geostatistical analysis and resource estimation model. The choices made in construction of wireframes have a trickle-down effect on the entire model and should be made according to best practices for the deposit type at hand.TYPES OF WIREFRAMES Explicit The term “explicit wireframe” is used in this paper to indicate wireframes that are constructed by the modeler. This usually involves the modeler drawing the wireframes “by hand”, e.g. still utilizing some sort of computer aided drawing software, but with the modeler making all decisions about the size, shape, and positon of the wireframe. These wireframes are drawn based on some type of key variable that the modeler determines is important to their system. Often, this key variable may be a lithologic unit that controls mineralization, an observable structural zone, or a grade cutoff. Explicit wireframes are generally constructed as a series of shapes drawn on 2D planes or cross sections that are then connected into a 3D shape. Figure 1 shows an example of an explicit wireframe that was drawn based on a grade cutoff on 2D sections (Figure 1a), then joined into a 3D shape (Figure 1b)."

Efficiency demands that mine geologists devote the most time to tasks where they can have the biggest effect on production. One of the most time-consuming tasks is geological interpretation of the orebody and turning this into a block model for the planning engineers.The current best practice for mines that require a geologically constrained resource model involves capturing the interpretation of geologists as three-dimensional (3D) wireframes. However, there is significant overhead in the production of valid wireframes from sectional and plan interpretations. This overhead consists of the mundane tasks of digitising polylines, then building 3D wireframes and validating them. While software can simplify this task, the current process is not the best use of a geologist’s time. Under time pressure exerted by planning engineers and the time required for modelling from polylines, geologists are forced to roll-up the presence of other elements or impurities into the interpretation and encode them in the polylines, even though it is often desirable to consider these other factors separately.While it might seem unlikely that mine geologists can produce constrained geological models without the intermediary of wireframes, the technology to accomplish this is getting closer.In this paper, the results of a trial at the Savage River magnetite mine, which is owned and operated by Grange Resources Ltd, are reported. The trial was for a ‘direct-to-block’ implicit geological modelling method. The focus was on creating a geological attributed block model from drill hole geological log data; resource estimates were not determined. The categories modelled were air, waste, low-grade ore, medium-grade ore, and high-grade ore. The block model outputs either resulted in a proportional block model (categories expressed as percentages within equivolumetric blocks) or a sub-blocked model (parent block and one sub-block), which is the preferred block model output at the Savage River mine. When compared to the traditional best practice modelling method, which takes 43 work days, the wireframe-free modelling method took only 26 hours from initial modelling, using both exploration and grade control data. An update using appended drill hole data is achievable within one day. These results represent time savings of more than one order of magnitude compared to the traditional workflow, and, as such, these figures merit serious consideration for the use of the direct-to-block modelling approach at other operations.With these time savings, geological and estimation models can be kept updated constantly; geologists will not need to set aside two months for quarterly or half-yearly modelling of the drill hole data for resource review. Such dramatic time savings will allow for the better use of highly skilled geologists, who are in short supply in the current market, and will also impact directly on downstream mining engineering workflows.

"There is a very small fraction of wireless experts in the world with experience in underground installations and an even smaller fraction that have experience specific to building mine shafts. This is why in 2009, Redpath created its own system to meet the demands specific to shaft construction. Today, after a dozen shaft installations and several design iterations, Redpath has the expertise and experience required to implement a proper wireless system in any shaft configuration.This document will explain multiple proven wireless communication designs optimized for shaft construction and suitable for permanent use. This includes line of sight installations up to 1200m, short range mesh networks, and the latest patent pending Integrated Leaky Feeder Mesh Network. Additionally, this document will explore the lessons that Redpath learned in its effort to interconnect the people and tools needed to build a mine shaft.INTRODUCTIONAfter a decade of research, several design iterations and a dozen application examples, Redpath has resolved two wireless network architectures to best serve mine shaft construction projects.The long range line-of-sight (LOS) wireless network is the most cost effective and easiest to install, but requires an unobstructed line of sight between the working area and the shaft collar. As such, long range LOS is best suited for ventilation shafts or during the first phase of shaft sinking, before the shaft is equipped.Alternatively, a mesh network uses radios installed at pre-determined intervals in the shaft and on each conveyance. A wireless mesh uses antennas to bridge intervals between shaft radios, whereas Redpath’s integrated leaky feeder mesh network (patent pending) bridges these intervals with radiating cable, commonly referred to as a “leaky feeder” cable. Both of these mesh configurations can provide continuous reception for hoist conveyances travelling in shafts without line-of-sight, making them ideal for shaft equipping and even permanent installations in both mine shafts and lateral drifts.BACKGROUNDHoist operators receive operating commands using what are commonly referred to as “bell signals.” These instructions are delivered in a series of coded pulses on a spring returned pull cord or push button that is typically hardwired back to the hoist operator’s control room from one of many locations in the mine shaft. During the construction phase of a traditional mine shaft, a worker riding inside the sinking bucket would have to reach out to a pull cord installed on the shaft wall to send a stop command to the hoist operator. Today, Redpath’s modern shaft sinking projects use fully enclosed personnel carriers to protect the workers riding inside, specifically preventing workers from reaching out into the shaft while the hoist is in motion. The enforcement of this safety feature on all shaft projects in 2008 forced the engineering group at Redpath to find a suitable wireless solution for hoist communication to facilitate shaft construction.THE IDEAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR MINE SHAFT CONSTRUCTIONIdeally, the shaft communication system should not transform the tools to which the miners have grown accustomed. It should support the push-to-talk functionality of traditional VHF handsets and the standard belling system that has been used for decades. Additionally, it should be able to support a vendor independent framework upon which new devices and features can be added. The following paragraphs summarize some of the important requirements Redpath has identified.Support for voice transmission: Low latency is critical to prevent jitter during voice transmissions. Wireless technology is a hot topic for anyone involved in the design, operation, maintenance or upgrading of mines or mineral processing plants because wireless technologies overcome barriers that have prevented many useful data inputs. Wireless communications can contribute to worker safety, satisfy environmental concerns, support plant security, track human and physical assets, and improve equipment maintenance. The cost structure of wireless is compelling and users can realize savings ? up to 90 percent less installed cost than wired instruments ? since wireless technology eliminates the need for expenses associated with cabling, engineering, construction and documentation. Many applications previously considered too expensive have become economically feasible with wireless. Two examples are continuous monitoring of safety showers to notify operators when one has been activated, and monitoring effluents to ensure environmental regulations are being met. In many cases, wireless transmitters can be installed where wired devices were too expensive to justify, or were not feasible due to physical or technical barriers. Examples include monitoring temperature measurements inside a rotating reactor or monitoring process variables in a tough, corrosive environment too challenging for a wired solution. Wireless also gives operating personnel mobility with the ability to communicate from remote or hard-to-reach zones. According to a recent Venture Development Corp. survey covering radio frequency (RF) of microwave industrial monitoring and control products, these features are contributing to the expected nationwide growth rate for industrial wireless applications of 19 percent annually from 2007 to 2012 (Taylor, 2008). At the same time, mineral producers have many questions about wireless systems including their applicability, reliability and security in this industry. Just what can wireless do? Is it secure and reliable? Can these instruments stand up to the rigors of the industry? Can wire-less technology provide the flexibility needed for mining applications?

In general, knowledge of the state of stress within the Antarctic lithosphere remains largely unconstrained due in part to Antarctica?s inaccessibility and because of the paucity of seismic focal mechanism solutions. As such, an important component of the ANDRILL project was to acquire new information on the stress directions and magnitudes within the upper crust. Extensive fracture mapping of the core and oriented ultrasonic televiewer logging were carried out to provide strong constraints on both stress orientations and the faulting regime. The first hydraulic fracturing stress determinations in Antarctica were also carried out to provide complimentary stress magnitudes. These measurements were accomplished using a wire-line transported hydraulic fracturing system consisting, essentially, of two synthetic polymer packers that were inflated to isolate the 1-m long pressurization interval. The tests were conducted at the end of the drilling and logging in a ~130-m section specially drilled below 1000 mbsf (nearly 1500 m from the rig floor) for hydraulic fractures. This zone was drilled primarily through competent, dense, and low permeability diamicts. The core fracture and televiewer logging information was used to site twenty separate measurements. Classic hydraulic fracturing pressurization records with unambiguous breakdown and fracture closure pressures were obtained in about half of the measurements. The remaining tests provided fracture propagation and closure pressures that are consistent with the classic breakdown curves, but they did not include a clear breakdown pressure and are indicative of the reopening of either natural or drilling induced fractures in the wellbore wall. The preliminary analysis of the results are in generally good agreement with the stress directions indicated by the core fracture logging and the stress regime suggested by the character of the drilling induced core fractures.

PIP is regularly engaged in businesses where Greenfield Capital Projects are under- delivering on the expected business case. In most of these projects, we can identify that rigorous review has been carried out on the design and financial cost elements and substantial reporting is maintained to Boards on progress versus plan of project completion and cost. However, in all sites of this nature that we have worked at, the planning, design and execution of the operational elements or æwiringÆ of the organisation have fallen short and resulted in significant extra cost or opportunity cost (lost tonnage or quality) during start-up. When compared to the amount of planning and resources that have been poured into the capital side, the ledger on the æwiringÆ side is typically fairly sparse. This presentation outlines the importance of running a disciplined, rigorous process to prepare the human and wiring side of a start-up to ensure rapid start-ups and put the site on the pathway to high performance. It gives an outline of the rigorous process PIP has used with projects to ensure excellent start-ups.

MY remarks are addressed to the question whether a program of international mineral control can effectively serve as a means of maintaining world peace in the kind of world envisaged by the Atlantic Charter. They do not touch the quite different questions whether such control could be appropriately used for postwar punishment of Germany and Japan, or for other purposes. I assume also that the question relates, not to the transition period immediately following the war, but to the more normal years which we hope will succeed this. Finally, they deal primarily with metals and metallic minerals rather than with. oil or coal or other minerals, although they may be applicable also to these other nonmetallic materials.

Copper price rebounds A worldwide scramble for diminishing supplies of copper has pushed the red metal's price to more than $2.20/kg ($1 per lb), the highest level since 1980. The first nine months of 1987, world copper production was down 1% from a year ago, while consumption rose 7%. Demand has been fueled by economic strength in several countries, particularly Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The price has also been helped by interest rate declines that have prompted manufacturers to build up inventories. In addition, China is expected to be a major buyer in 1988 as it stocks up for its five-year industrialization plan. There appears to be no sign of any significant increase in copper supplies until later 1988 or early 1989. This means supplies probably will remain tight for some time even if world economic activity slows. Strikes and other production problems slowed world output of copper in 1987. As a result, copper supplies are the lowest they have been in 14 years. World inventories currently total 625 kt (690,000 st). That is not much above the 585 kt (645,000 st) level reached in 1974 when the price of copper rose to a record $3.84/kg ($1.74 per lb). This makes all the more interesting what Chile, the world's largest copper producer, has been doing lately. Chile has been the world's largest copper producer since 1982, when it overtook the United States. Table 1 shows Chile's copper grades, reserves, and production at its mines. Chile contains roughly one-fifth of the world's copper reserves. At present production rates, these reserves would last for more than 100 years. In 1986, Chile produced 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of fine copper, up 3%. Chile accounted for 17% of the world's copper output.

Wollastonite is a little known industrial mineral of the silicate group. The largest and purest known deposit in the free world is being mined and beneficiated in Millsboro, New York by NYCO, A Division of Processed Minerals Incorporated. The associated garnet and diopside are separated from the wollastonite using dry high intensity magnetic separators. Beneficiated wollastonite is used extensively as an additive and filler in the ceramic, paint, refractory, and wallboard industries. Wollastonite acts as a functional filler due to its unique chemistry and physical acicularity.

AMERICANIZE THE MINING INDUSTRY Americanization is the snaking of American citizens; men and women controlled by the ideals of American citizenship, which have been built up by this country's heritage and its unceasing struggle for freedom and democracy and opportunity. That means, first of all, a necessary understanding of what those ideals are and what they mean for the newly arrived foreigner. It means that every kind of anti-American propaganda must be stamped out; that racial prejudices and the misunder-standings which lead to unrest and disloyalty and make fruitful soil for anti-American propaganda must be overcome. The foreigner must understand. He must understand what we are trying to do here in America; he must understand something, at least, of the kind of government we have built up in our efforts to, accomplish our particular aims; he must understand how lie can fit into it all, not only to help America, but to help himself-to make it possible for hint to get from this country what he carne here seeking. First of all, he must learn the American language. He must be able to talk with his fellow Americans-those who were born here and those who have recently cone, like himself, but from a different land. The most dramatic, the most crucial demonstration of the urgency of the need of all this is given to us right now. At the time when it is most essential for this country to be solidly American, enemy propagandists are winning an occasional success here because they give their message to men and women and boys and girls who do not understand our language and consequently do not understand us. These foreigners, whom the enemy is trying to make disloyal, are really in our army, the big army that is fighting the war for America. Most of them are not among the soldiers who will fight on the battle front, but they are in the lines back of these soldiers. The worker in the shipyards and in the mines is just as important a soldier in this war as the man in the trenches. That has been said over and over, but it cannot be said too often. It is just as vital for that man in the mine to know why we are at war as it is for the soldier. His employer has just as great a responsibility to the country as has any general, and it is the same responsibility.

What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016. The 2025 Women in Mining USA National Conference, held April 15-18 at the Grand Hyatt Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX, brought together hundreds of professionals for a fourday event focused on empowering women and creating space for all individuals in the industry. Under the theme “Empowering the Future of Mining,” the conference served as a dynamic platform for professional development, knowledge-sharing and cross-sector collaboration. Organized by Women in Mining USA (WIM USA), whose mission is to foster equity, sustainability and leadership in mining, the event featured an extensive agenda including workshops, keynote speeches, panel discussions and networking opportunities. Attendees ranged from industry veterans to emerging professionals and students, united by a shared commitment to progress within one of the world’s most essential and traditionally maledominated sectors.

In 1972, in Denver, CO, five women with a shared goal joined forces to create the first formal space for women in the mining industry: Women in Mining USA (WIM USA). When the organization first took shape, few could have predicted that a small gathering of women would grow into one of the most influential organizations that would advocate for inclusion in the industry. Now, more than 50 years later, the group remains a vital network for professionals across the United States with a diverse array of membership and chapters.

In the last few years it has become legal for women to work without restriction underground in some States in Australia. Since the mid 1970's there have been women graduates in mining engineering from several Australian tertiary institutions. Women from this group are the first females to have been employed to do manual work underground this century. The questions which arise are "What are the current parameters surrounding the employment of women underground?" and "What have been the experiences of those women who have worked underground?". In order to answer these questions, contact has been made with the various mining schools in Australia, the relevant government departments, the main underground mining companies, the relevant unions and professional associations, and other women who have worked undergrond. Personal experience as both a miner and a mining engineer at the CSA Mine near Cobar in New South Wales is also used.

Mining has historically been one of the most male-dominated industries in the world. From underground operations to executive boardrooms, the presence of women has often been slim. Women had often been excluded from operational, leadership and decision-making roles, both by cultural norms and systemic barriers. According to PwC’s Global Mine Report (2023), women represent around 14 percent of the global mining workforce. Leadership representation, however, remains sparse, with S&P Global’s 2023 report showing women holding approximately 12 percent of C-suite positions and only 3 percent of senior leadership roles globally. These figures reflect persistent gaps, but they also highlight the progress driven by a new generation of women transforming the industry. Despite the gender imbalance among mining workers, women have continuously made grand strides within the industry, resulting in pivotal changes. At the forefront of this transformation is Kimberly Morrison, one of several women who have played pivotal roles in shaping the mining sector.

Introduction 1n assembling material for this paper on Wood Refuse Burning 1 turned first to the records of our early studies of the problem in order to learn how and why certain basic decisions were arrived at and also how it came about that the completed central steam plant differed so much from the original plans. It may be of interest, therefore, to outline the engineering problems as they presented themselves in the early part of 1948, and to indicate the economies involved. Although the principle of using wood refuse as boiler fuel instead of burning it to waste was quite sound, and in fact the practice had been in use for a long time in the boilers of many lumber companies, there was some guesswork as far as Hollinger was concerned in deciding how best to handle the large quantities of wood refuse involved and as to the type of boiler equipment necessary to .burn it efficiently. These problems will be examined first. Hollinger Boiler Equipment in 1948 Hollinger had four separate boiler houses, at Main, No. II, and No. 19 shafts, and a small unit at the compressor plant for heating purposes. Main and No. Il boiler houses operated all the year round; No. 19 and the compressor plant only in the winter. At Main there were four 36-year-old HRT boilers with total available h.p. of 500, at No. II, three 30-year-old HRT boilers with 195 available h.p., and at No. 19 two old field-type locomotive boilers capable of producing 95 h.p.

Y.-I should like to ask Mr. Neale how the members of the production committees at the individual mines, who came from the mine workers themselves, were chosen or appointed; also from what classes of employees they usually came? J. B. NEALE.-In the union fields, they were chosen by a local. In the non-union fields, they were chosen either by the men in mass meeting or by the company officials. The last way was very unsatisfactory because it gave the men an opportunity to say that they were going to be passed upon as to whether they were slackers or not, by men chosen by the company. When they were chosen by the locals or at mass meetings of the workers, the appointments have been very much more satisfactory. R. D. HALL, ? New York, N. Y.-The matter of inefficiency on the part of the operator is one that I think we may well take into account, because there is a very large inefficiency on the part of the coal operator; it has arisen from reasons almost beyond his control and will continue for these same reasons. It is no use arguing a moral responsibility on the part of the operator, when you make efficiency very largely a loss to the operator who puts it in force. If you ask a man working on a clay wage to work with more efficiency. he says, "Well, I may do it or I may not," it all depends how he feels, but he does not lose anything financially by not working hard. If you ask the man who is working by the ton to put out more tons, he makes a profit by putting out more tons. How is it with the operator? If he gives a man all the cars he needs and all the power he needs, if he runs after his working men and waits on them, he does not get his coal out any cheaper than before.. He gives the man a better chance and there is more efficiency, but at the same time he has increased his expenses all along the line. At the end of the year he finds that his profits have been less than if he had had less efficiency. The efficiency is really against him in many ways. Because he gets a larger tonnage, he reduces the overhead to a certain extent; but hiss tonnage may not be any greater because he may work fewer days. As Mr. Taylor remarked some tine ago, supposing he puts in a machine that is very much more effective than any he had before, he has the same scale; the miner gets out more coal, but he himself does not get any benefit out of it because he has a scale fixed, so much per ton.
