Si bien a través de la implementación del mecanismo de Obras por Impuestos (OxI), introducido en el ordenamiento legal en el año 2008, mediante el cual se permite que cualquier empresa privada, de manera individual o en consorcio, pueda financiar, implementar y brindar mantenimiento a proyectos de inversión pública -que ayuden a reducir a la brecha en infraestructura- con cargo hasta el 50% del pago de su Impuesto a la Renta de Tercera Categoría por año. Por medio del mecanismo se ha podido cubrir una fracción de las demandas de la población en materia de infraestructura, cuyo déficit sigue siendo bastante alto1, es necesario considerar una mejor asignación de los recursos del canon minero generado por las empresas del sector hacia importantes objetivos actuales, tales como la generación de desarrollo humano, el aumento de la productividad y la mitigación del cambio climático

THE experiments detailed by Dr. Hunt,* having demonstrated the fact that the copper contained in the "clay ore" of Jones's Mine, was rendered completely soluble in the bath of ferrous chloride, used in the Hunt and Douglas process, after heating in contact with carbonaceous matter in a close vessel, I set myself to devise a form of muffle furnace adapted to the treatment of large quantities of these and similar ores by a continuous process. The result is shown in the diagrams on Plate X, reduced from the working drawings, after which this furnace was built early in 1876, at Phoenixville, by the Chemical Copper Company on their works at this place. The peculiar character of this ore determined the form, dimensions, and position, with reference to charging and discharging of these muffles. The ore arrived from the mine with from 20 to 25 per cent. of moisture, and when dried at 212° F., or more slowly at lower temperature, it falls to a light incoherent powder, with occasional lumps of undecomposed rock. In this condition it is readily mingled with coal-dust or any like reducing agent, and requires no other preparation for the muffle than the use of the shovel, to mix it well with the reducing agent. As it is a remarkably good non-conductor of heat, it was obvious that the mass, to be heated through in a reasonable time, must not be too thick, while the weight of the mass must be sustained in a way to avoid undue strain upon the walls of the muffle. These walls must be as thin as practicable, to favor the more rapid transmission of heat, and must, therefore, be so con¬structed as to admit of being stayed on the sides at frequent intervals to resist the lateral thrust of the very mobile mass of pulverulent ore, which, for obvious reasons, must be charged at the top and drawn from the bottom of each chamber. These considerations led to the form adopted, viz., two vertical muffles, standing upon very strong bridge tiles, seen in longitudinal section, on the line E, F, and in plan in Fig. 3, on the same plane. (Plate X.) The vertical section of the muffle is seen in Fig. 4, drawn in the plane G, H, of the longitudinal section, Fig. 6, which is the key to all sections. The title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. Definition of Mineral Aggregates " Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without port-land cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. provide aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theeretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. Exploration and Possibilities of Development The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth,s crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (i) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. The industry has much engilleering talent in its operating branch, but it lacks, to a considerable degree, engineering talent with experience

In the winter of 1941-42, muscovite mica was discovered by a young prospector, Justin Purdy, in the township of Mat-tawan, Nipissing District, Ontario, a few miles north of the small settlement of Eau Claire, which lies on the main Transcontinental Highway (No. 17) between Mattawa and North Bay. Muscovite had been known for many years to occur in the general Mattawa region, and various small efforts at production had previously been made by individuals working scattered deposits in the area. These minor activities, however, had never led to production of any consequence or the discovery of any important mica bodies. The Purdy finds were made in a heavily timbered, mountainous area lying about three miles north of the low-lying settled land along the highway, and in a section not hitherto prospected. The mica taken by Purdy and two partners from surface outcrops proved so remarkable in point of size of trimmed sheets that the find attracted considerable attention, and the area surrounding the three claims taken up by the prospectors was quickly blanket-staked by various interests. Though a number of other mica-bearing pegmatite dikes were found later on these stakings, none proved as rich as those on the original Purdy ground; very little commercial mica was obtained from them and attempts to develop them were short-lived. Purdy and his partners sold their initial production to dealers in Ottawa and Hull, where the Canadian mica industry long has centered. Young Purdy, unfortunately was killed in a motor accident in the early summer of 1942. His father continued mining operations for a few months and produced and sold a considerable amount of mica. In October 1942 the Purdy holdings were acquired by lnspiration Mining and Development Co. of Amos, Quebec, which had been active in staking in the area. This company formed a subsidiary, Purdy Mica Mines, Limited, to develop the property. Under the energetic management of Joseph R. Norrie, rapid progress was made, and production soon attained important proportions. Realizing from the outset the unusual character and potential value in the war effort of the Purdy discovery, the Metals Controller, Department of Munitions and Supply, at once arranged with the Department of Mines and Resources for an official geological report on the area, and also drew the attention of the War Production Board in Washington to what seemed likely to prove a highly important source of strategic-quality mica. Officials of WPB were sent up in the Summer of 1942 to inspect the property, and so impressed were they with the possibility that it might become of high

The trip from Denver southwest to Gunnison crosses seven main geologic and physiographic areas as shown on the accompanying map. These are: I Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Denver Metro area from downtown Denver to the foothills near Morrison. II Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Front Range from near Morrison to the west side of Kenosha Pass. III Sedimentary and volcanic rocks of South Park (Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Tertiary) from the west side of Kenosha Pass to Trout Creek Pass. IV Precambrian granitic rocks (1,350-1,480 M.Y.) between Trout Creek Pass and the Arkansas River. V Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks and sediments of the Arkansas River valley. VI Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks of the Sawatch uplift from Maysville to near Doyleville on the west side of Monarch Pass. VII Mostly sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous and Tertiary age from the Doyleville area west to beyond Gunnison. Each area will be elaborated in the following pages but no detailed road log is given since these are available elsewhere. An attempt has been made to point out some deposits and features of interest to economic geologists but it is by no means complete.

As mudanças no plano estratégico de uma organização reverberam por todos os seus setores, gerando demandas de alinhamento estratégico. Entre estes setores estão os de planejamento e programação da manutenção. O presente estudo de caso descreve uma iniciativa de alinhamento estratégico realizada pela equipe de planejamento de manutenção da unidade Germano da Samarco Mineração S/A, uma empresa de mineração, localizada no estado de Minas Gerais. A partir de uma revisão na estratégia corporativa foram derivados a missão, visão e valores da equipe. Esses por sua vez, serviram de base para uma revisão dos processos de trabalho e para a definição de ações de melhoria. Por fim foram estabelecidos indicadores para mensurar a realização da visão. Os resultados apresentados por esses indicadores comprovam que as equipes de planejamento podem obter e demonstrar resultados significativos através de técnicas elementares de planejamento estratégico.

O projeto Minas-Rio da Anglo American iniciou suas operações em agosto de 2014 e tem capacidade para produção de 26,5 milhões de toneladas naturais por ano de pellet feed. O sistema contempla a exploração e concentração da jazida localizada no município de Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG), bombeamento do concentrado por 529 km até o município de São João da Barra (RJ), onde ocorrem a filtragem, estocagem e embarque do produto final através de navios. Desde a concepção do projeto até os dias de hoje, diversos estudos foram realizados objetivando-se entender o comportamento das diferentes litologias de minérios nas etapas de processamento mineral. Desses, os mais relevantes focaram nas duas principais litologias do depósito: o itabirito resultante da intemperização da matriz (IF) e o próprio saprólito (IT). Os principais pontos de investigação foram o comportamento dos mesmos perante as etapas de cominuição e concentração. O objetivo desse trabalho é apresentar uma revisão bibliográfica das diversas comparações de desempenho perante a cominuição dessas duas litologias. Além disso, são apresentados e discutidos resultados inéditos do desempenho na flotação quando concentrado separadamente ou como uma mistura. Os resultados disponíveis na literatura mostram que, ao contrário do que se imagina, o itabirito natural não apresenta consumo energético significativamente maior nas etapas de cominuição. Os testes de flotação, por sua vez, mostraram que o desempenho é diferenciado, em função do grau de liberação dos mesmos.

A Samarco Mineração utiliza combustível gasoso para geração de energia térmica para o endurecimento pelotas de minério de ferro. O balanceamento térmico do forno ocorre através do controle das malhas de instrumentação que são compostas por válvulas de controle, sensores de temperatura, queimadores e sistema de suprimento de Gás Natural Industrial (GNI) para a combustão. A combustão é realizada por meio de queimadores, que são alimentados por uma mistura gasosa de GNI e Ar Atmosférico, ambos a temperatura ambiente. A função do GNI é fornecer a sua máxima capacidade energética para a produção de calor. Já o Ar atmosférico é resfriar o queimador, e estabilizar a chama dentro da câmara e ar primário de combustão. No entanto excesso de ar é fator determinante para eficiência de combustão, pois controla os produtos da queima, entre eles a temperatura. Um grande excesso de ar é indesejável, pois reduz a temperatura da chama, e aumenta as perdas de calor devido à entalpia dos gases.

A utilização de moinhos verticais na indústria mineral vem ganhando destaque nas últimas décadas, quando granulometrias mais finas passaram a ser exigidas, principalmente por tais equipamentos apresentarem maior eficiência energética para moagem fina e remoagem em comparação aos moinhos tubulares tradicionais. O dimensionamento destes equipamentos ainda é fortemente embasado por experiências em projetos similares, metodologias proprietárias dos fornecedores de equipamentos e plantas piloto, criando a necessidade do desenvolvimento de ensaios laboratoriais abertos e confiáveis para guiar tais trabalhos. Outro problema observado é a quantidade de material necessária para a realização dos ensaios, da ordem de ao menos 1 kg, o que pode ser um impedimento nos estágios inicias de um projeto, quando pouca massa de material proveniente de furos de sonda está disponível. Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um ensaio laboratorial com moinho de jarro para dimensionamento de moinhos verticais segundo uma abordagem energética que utilize uma pequena massa, de aproximadamente 500 g. O ensaio proposto mostrou-se de maior praticidade em relação em relação ao ensaio com jarro maior, por utilizar aproximadamente metade da massa necessária e também apresentar boa aderência aos resultados industriais.

Este trabalho estuda o fenômeno da erosão e a validação de um erosímetro. Com este propósito, as taxas de erosão, perda de massa acumulada por unidade de área e o fator de esfericidade foram medidos. Os testes foram realizados com corpos de prova de latão 360 CLA, efetuando quatro testes com durações de 5, 10, 15 e 20 horas, respectivamente. As amostras foram pesadas em uma balança de precisão antes e após os testes. O abrasivo utilizado foi a areia ABNT em uma concentração de 10% em peso. O impacto repetitivo entre as partículas abrasivas causou trincas, lascamentos e, consequentemente, a formação de partículas menores. Também foi constatado o arredondamento das partículas abrasivas. Tais fatos são a causa do decréscimo da taxa de erosão com o aumento do tempo de teste. Micrografias apresentam a degradação da superfície na parte frontal do corpo de prova devido à remoção de material. O erosímetro obteve sucesso nas comparações com outros artigos.

O gusa pode ser dessulfurado em carros torpedos ou em panelas de transferência, já que a dessulfuração do gusa é termodinamicamente favorável, devido as condições redutoras e interação do enxofre e carbono. Dessa maneira, neste trabalho, busca-se avaliar a literatura disponível para fornecer subsídios a elaboração de um modelo matemático para a cinética do processo de dessulfuração usado em escala industrial. Foram realizados testes industriais e coletadas amostras de escória e de gusa em quatro momentos do processo de dessulfuração. Dentre os modelos cinéticos disponíveis o modelo de Oeters, foi selecionado por sua simplicidade e adequação às condições da CSN. Com os dados obtidos na amostragem, derivou-se um modelo adaptado do modelo de Oeters para a uma equação de previsão do teor de enxofre ao longo da dessulfuração em carro torpedo.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar por meio de estudos técnico- científicos e de casos, como foram eliminadas as falhas devido a quebras dos elementos de proteção de sistemas de transmissão de torque (pinos de cisalhamento) no trem Laminador 2 (TL2) da Arcelormittal Piracicaba. A quebra de pinos de cisalhamento no TL2 são uma constante desde o inicio da operação do Laminador 2, sendo que diversas tentativas foram feitas no sentido de eliminar as quebras porem sem sucesso, o que demonstrou a necessidade de uma abordagem metodológica do problema. Este estudo, baseado na analise dos projetos dos equipamentos envolvidos e das praticas de manutenção adotada, orientou o redimensionamento dos elementos de proteção do sistema de transmissão de torque e o desenvolvimento de um novo sistema de proteção, utilizando o drive do motor para fazer a segurança do sistema de transmissão além da revisão e implantação de novas rotinas de manutenção nos equipamentos. O resultado obtido demonstrou a importância do profundo conhecimento tanto do projeto do equipamento quanto da avaliação e conhecimento empírico da manutenção de campo, conjunto este de informações que é indispensável para se garantir o desempenho dos equipamentos permitindo uma produção livre de imprevistos.

The Deserado Mine of Western Fuels- Utah Inc. installed a micro-computer based mine wide monitoring and control system for mine environment, beltway fire protection, belt operating parameters, and equipment power utilization. The Colorado School of Mines was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to document, evaluate, and report on the system design, procurement, installation, tests, and operation. This paper results from that project. The paper compares planned activities such as installation and start up, procurement contract specifications and system layout with actual performance to develop recommendations for future installations by mine operators.

"The East Side Access Project (ESA) involves the construction of geometrically complex underground structures including a large number of caverns and bifurcations. Initially conceived as dual lined structures with either traditional concrete or shotcrete final linings (SFL), construction economy, advances in concrete placement technology and scheduling among others led to a wide use of what is referred to as freeform or pneumatically applied concrete (PAC) for the construction of tunnel final linings. PAC is a method of applying concrete without using formwork, where a wet mix concrete is pneumatically installed to encase reinforcement to full lining thickness. PAC has been widely adopted at ESA well beyond initial expectations. The paper addresses the design and construction aspects of the PAC method and contrasts it to traditional SFL lining placement. The experience made provides guidance for future PAC and SFL applications. THE EAST SIDE ACCESS PROJECT AND USE OF FREEFORM CONCRETE The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodates New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the New York City Transit (NYCT) Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The construction includes mining and lining of new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. The tunnels run from Queen’s Sunny Side Yard through the existing 63rd St. Tunnel, underneath Manhattan’s Park Avenue until termination at 37th Street. Differing types of tunneling methods and final lining systems are being used depending on the ground conditions, geometry and size of the excavation, site constraints and functional requirements. Mining of the Queens segment of the ESA Project involved soft ground tunneling by pressurized face tunnel boring machines, cut and cover construction, and conventional tunneling. The Manhattan segment of the ESA Project involves mining in hard rock by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header."

The Potomac River Tunnel (PRT) is the next major phase of the DC Clean Rivers Program. The design-build PRT project includes a 5.5-mile-long, 18-foot-internaldiameter tunnel, seven shafts, and two underground connections to existing structures. Major challenges include tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation though mixed-face conditions within a buried paleo-channel and an approximately 1,350-foot-long rock/ soil transition zone; construction beneath the elevated Whitehurst Freeway; tunneling beneath an existing luxury residential building and existing transit tunnels with limited clearance; and complex coordination with a variety of federal, regional, and local stakeholders. This paper describes the overall project scope, geotechnical conditions along the alignment, and primary design/construction challenges and mitigations.

Recent major floods have inundated Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, resulting in loss of life and property damage. Howard County, Maryland, has developed the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan to mitigate the risk of flash flooding in the Historic District, including a proposed stormwater conveyance tunnel. Challenges to overcome include thick zones of saprolite along the alignment, multiple near-surface structures, and minimal rock cover under an active railroad, while minimizing impacts to the public and historic structures. The project will also pursue recognition through the ISI Envision verification process.

The Pawtucket Tunnel is a 2.2-mi, 30.2-ft diameter CSO storage tunnel in Rhode Island. The primary tunnel is built using a dual-mode open-EPB TBM capable of sealing the face within 120 seconds to manage poor ground and water ingress which is launched from within a SEM starter tunnel. The main tunnel connects to four adits along its alignment, three of which are SEM tunnels and one being a MTBM tunnel. This contribution describes the selection process, potential risks, and requirements for the TBM, as well as the design of the main tunnel, the adits, and the adit-bored tunnel connections.
