TO give a concise history of the Woman's Auxiliary of the A. I. M. E. is a difficult task and much interesting information must needs be omitted. The organization has grown and evolved so much from its early simple beginning that it seems best to adopt the technique of some of our modern novelists and begin with the latest development. As the headquarters of the A. I. M. E. is in New York, it follows that the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. necessarily has also its central office and government there. The affairs of the organization are administered by a duly-elected president and five vice- presidents, a treasurer, recording secretary, and corresponding secretary and a board of directors, the personnel of which includes each chairman of a section or an elected or nominated representative who is able to attend the monthly meetings of the board and correspond with the section for which she acts, and the chairmen of the five standing national committees, i. e. Educational Fund, Library, Emergency, Membership and Hospitality. The chairmen of these committees are all responsible to the president and board of directors and their activities must be indorsed with their approval.

SINCE the sixties, Utah has been one of the leading metal mining states of the Union. During the last fifteen years its mines have supported the largest smelting center in the world. Its rank as a metal producing state is reflected by its 1924 production which had a value in excess of $65,000,000 making it the leading silver producing state, third in both copper and lead and sixth in gold production. During the past year, metallurgical developments for the recovery of zinc contained in lead ores has made rapid progress so that the future zinc output will be of substantial importance. The largest silver mines of the nation and the world's largest open cut copper mine are within its borders. The base of the stone quarry still stands today, as imposing as any Mavan temple or Egyptian pyramid. For 80 years it has been a reminder to those who must sweat to earn a wage. There are no plaques to indicate its impressive history. Rather, it stands as a towering monument to the masons and stone cutters who built it-a testimony in stone to that most demanding and back-breaking of industries. Take your imagination back to the limestone quarries at Split Rock, near Syracuse, NY. The sound of an occasional steam drill and the mighty roar of a dynamite explosion herald progress. The ring and crash of a hundred sledge hammers are music in the calloused hands of the quarry men. It is a symphony of man against nature. Hundreds of sweat-soaked men break up the blue Onondaga limestone for the "sodi ash," the popular name for the quarry owner, the Solvay Process Co. Nearby, expert stone masons fit mammoth 454-kg (1,000-1b) blocks of cut stone into place, building the foundation for what may have been, back in 1902, the world's largest stone crusher. Consider for a moment, a modern stone quarry. The business is now essentially one of machine against nature. The shovels, drills, conveyors, and locomotives help make the quarry of today a profitable venture. Now consider the quarry of the early 20th Century. Anyway you look at it, a tougher, more demanding life would be difficult to imagine-12 hours a day, all kinds of weather, breaking up tons of rock that had been drilled, blasted, or pounded from the bowels of an uncooperative earth. Before proceeding, it might be prudent to briefly describe the history of the Split Rock quarries. Before the purchase of the quarry lands by the fledgling Solvay Process Co. in 1889, the quarries already had a reputation literally chiseled in stone. Most of the municipal buildings in Syracuse were made of it, as well as over half of the Erie Canal, including the engineering marvel of the time, the Montezuma Aqueduct. HISTORY In 1923 John Campbell Miles discovered the Mount Isa deposit after finding and submitting for assay some “unusual and heavy rocks”. Six months after submission he received the assays of his original samples which indicated high lead-silver values. The deposit area was isolated and unknown geographically and not served by even a rough country road. The isolation of Mount Isa coupled with the depression years had a strong influence on the rate of development of the area. These two factors resulted in a slow amalgamation of the early individually held leases and the lack of ready finance to begin serious mining of the deposit. Initially, surface lead-silver-zinc mineralisation was proved and diamond drilling to shallow depths showed the presence of a viable orebody. Limited underground development work was initiated and open cutting associated with glory holing commenced. Due to the metallurgical problems associated with the ore and due also to unsuspected change in metallurgical conditions as the ore deepened into what is known today as the transition zone, major problems of finance were recurring at frequent intervals. Despite low metal prices the development of the mine continued due to continuing infusion of capital. During the 1939-45 war years a surplus of lead was being produced in Australia, but a grave shortage of copper was apparent. About this time copper ore had been found to the hanging wall of the then known major lead orebodies. At the request of the Australian Government, lead production ceased and copper production commenced.

ON Sept. 24, 1875, a remarkable deposit of silver ore was discovered by James Ryan and Samuel Hawkes at the east base of Grampian Hill in central Beaver County, Utah.. A shaft was begun and had been sunk about 30 ft. in ore when the claim was sold on Feb. 17, 1876, to A. G. Campbell, Matthew Cullen, Dennis Ryan, and A. Byram for $25,000. To them is due the credit of having developed the mine and started the district on the road to its present state of prosperity. Their development resulted in proving the vein to a depth of over 280 ft. and about 2500 tons of ore was extracted and turned into bullion. In February, 1879, the mine came into the possession of the Horn Silver Mining Co., and since then over $65,000,000 worth of ore has been taken from the mine. Two smelters were built in 1878, near the mine; 400 men were employed underground, and 1000 on the surface, burning charcoal, hauling wood from the surrounding hills, and freighting and hauling hay for the hundreds of horses used in the work. "The index A*b, determined from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight tester (DWT) results, has become well-known in the mining industry as a reliable measure of ore hardness in impact or crushing, having the inferred units of t/kWh. This index evolved from a long history of comminution studies at the JKMRC, including the development of the now superseded JKTech twin-pendulum, the industry standard JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) and the faster alterative JKMRC rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). A reduced version of the DWT, the semi-autogenous grinding mill comminution test (SMC test®), also provides estimates of the A*b though the testing of only one particle size at five specific energies. Experimental determination of A*b using the above devices/tests requires samples, with sufficient mass, to be sent to designated laboratories, registered to conduct such tests. This protocol is fine for bankable and commercial testing, where material characterisation data is used in conjunction with machine specific data in modelling and simulation, and power based calculations. However, for comparative testing, where results are required at the time of sampling (eg for plant troubleshooting or spot-surveys), or for rapid ranking of geometallurgical samples, these existing tests simply do not provide a timely, viable and cost-effective solution. In order to address this critical void in the realm of comparative testing, a new device has been developed, exploiting a central feature of single particle impact testing – that the A*b can be reliably estimated using one precise low energy test. This device, for which a patent is currently pending, called the HIT (Hardness Index Tester), has been precision engineered to allow users to break narrowly sized fragments at a set specific energy, in a safe and easy manner. The manufacturing materials have been chosen carefully to ensure compatibility with the intended use and portability to any site, whilst minimising cost. The device is supplied with a novel quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) feature, to ensure that the targeted potential energy is consistently delivered. The product from the HIT breakage test can be quickly sized using a single screen to determine the mass per cent undersize, from which the A*b index is calculated directly at site – eliminating the need to send the raw data off-site for analysis. On presized fragments, a single test using 20 fragments takes less than five minutes to complete, and the results are immediately available. The HIT is currently being tested at a major mining laboratory in the US and the results to date have proved it can deliver on all fronts. This paper describes the new prototype device, which offers users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the A*b at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core, blast chip rejects or the grinding circuit feed. It also outlines the results of field tests carried out by an objective third party mining group and compares the results with those from current industry standard tests conducted on the same material.Citation:Kojovic, T, 2016. C. 4 Hoist Assemblies (not man-rated) A large number of manufacturers supply materials handling winches. These units are predominately electric powered while a limited number of vendors supply air powered equipment. Air powered units are currently used extensively for underground materials handling purposes. Suppliers of materials handling equipment normally include a disclaimer statement in their published literature which clearly states that the equipment "is not designed or suitable for lifting or lowering persons " This category of commercially available equipment can be adequate for emergency man hoisting provided that its' capacity is suitably derated and provided also that the necessary safety features are incorporated. Section C. 5 details the equipment which could be added to a commercial materials hoist to meet these needs. Four commercially available hoist assemblies, two electric and two pneumatic are discussed in the following paragraphs. This equipment is typical of what is commercially available and three of the units are currently used extensively in mining applications. Each hoist description includes a remarks paragraph which identifies the additional equipment each hoist would require for emergency hoist use.

In April 2000 Mount Isa Mines installed hoist ropes of a new design on the double-drum winder at their P49 shaft. The ropes, CASAR Duroplast, were about three times as expensive as the previously used triangular strand ropes. The P49 shaft is situated at Mount Isa MinesÆ George Fisher Mine, located some 30 km north of Mt Isa. This shaft used the tried and proven 6 x 33 triangular strand style ropes. The rope life attained by these ropes at the time was acceptable due to many years of satisfactory performance. The following study indicates the improvement of service life using CASAR Duroplast rope in P 49 shaft, which depends on shaft and winder parameters of that particular shaft and cannot necessarily be generalised to other shafts.

Rope performance reliability is an absolutely essential ingredient of most installations and, for this to be provided, a more comprehensive understanding of rope reactions to applied stresses is required.It is the intent of this paper to illustrate for the operators the importance of the critical stresses encountered and to provide a maintenance program designed to circumvent potential difficulties."

International Nickel has 15 operating mines in Canada, and. 3 mines which are being maintained on a standby basis. Annual production is about 20 million dry short tons of ore, most of which is from underground mines, the remainder from open pit mines. Although some of the underground mines are served by ramps for trackless vehicles, most men, materials and ore are hoisted in vertical shafts. In addition to shafts and raises for ventilation and service purposes which are not equipped with hoisting plants, there are now 28 vertical shafts at Inco mines served by 47 hoists. Of these, 22 shafts and 36 hoists are located in the Sudbury District of Ontario, one shaft and two hoists are at the Shebandowan mine in Western Ontario, and 5 shafts with 9 hoists are located near Thompson, Manitoba. This paper describes the components of Inco hoisting plants-which have been applied at different times and under different conditions, and indicates the rationale for the various designs. Some engineering and maintenance practices, considered advantageous, are also described. MINE SHAFTS Many of the shafts sunk in the early days of the Sudbury District, on what are now Inco properties, were inclined shafts. Of the identifiable shafts sunk between 1885 and 1920, thirteen were inclined and at least four were vertical. Since 1920, thirty vertical and two inclined shafts have been sunk. All of the inclined shafts have been abandoned for hoisting purposes but the majority are still in use as service or ventilation ways. Shafts at Thompson- and Shebandowan are all vertical. The vertical shafts range from 2 or 3 compartment exploration and development shafts to 6 compartment shafts for ore, man and material hoisting. They vary in depth from 1,050 to 7,137 feet and in addition to hoisting compartments all contain manway and service compartments. Prior to 1948, unlined rectangular shafts with timber sets and guides were used. The rectangular cross-section was favoured since the rock is competent, the shape compatible with timber set framing, and since available shaft space could be used efficiently. Resistance to air flow was not of prime importance. Concrete linings were introduced for the first time at the Creighton No. 7 Shaft which was collared in 1948. All major shafts since that date have been concrete lined. Vertical set intervals were increased in steps, with the introduction of structural steel sets secured to the concrete linings. Whereas 7 foot set intervals were used with timber framing, this increased to 10 feet 6 inches with steel sets and more recently to 15 feet with steel and steel backed wood guides. With the advent of deeper shafts, or shafts which are expected to be deepened, the trend is to circular concrete lined shafts. The majority of shaft guides in service are of select Douglas Fir. As the trend to deeper mines, producing from marginal ore bodies, continues, mine hoists and their associated equipment will become more sophisticated, complex, large and expensive. Over the past two decades, mine hoisting equipment and systems have moved from steam engines to static rectification of ac to dc, and electronic controls are the standard. It is the intent of this section to present what is currently available in the field of mine hoisting equipment and systems. Because the present engineer has been exposed longer and more intensively to such things as computers, electronic devices, and machine design, no attempt has been made to make this a layman's article. Contributions from the electrical design and application engineer, gearing and hearing design engineers and other specialists have been incorporated. Some material will be devoted to electrical drive systems, rectifiers and gearing design among others. These items are inherent in the design of a mine hoisting system and the subsequent selection of the correct, most reliable and most economic system. The mine hoist can be a bottleneck between the underground mine and the surface mill. Correct selection of the right type of hoist is imperative. In this vital link between mine and mill, crude estimates of hoist capacity are not good enough, and the mining engineer must design and select the right hoisting system to meet the design specifications. 15.1-MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available anywhere in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum and friction hoists are "generic" terms which describe the two basic categories. Within each category are variations, as below. 15.1.1-DRUM HOISTS Drum hoists, as noted, actually store the hoist rope on the drum much the same as line on a fishing reel. To accomplish this task, the drums are so designed to store, in one or more layers, the footage of wire rope equal to the total maximum hoisting distance plus sufficient rope for cutting and inspection at regular intervals and for holding to the drum (see Fig. 15-1). Usual practice in hoist drum design is to allow three turns of hoist rope for holding on the drum and three turns for inspection cuttings. 1. Single-Drum Hoists-Fig. 15-2 shows a typical single-drum hoist as manufactured by most U.S. heavy-mining-equipment companies. With the exception of some very minor features, this design configuration is standard throughout the U.S.A. Fig. 15-3 is a plan view of a typical single-drum mine hoist. This particular hoist has a single-motor drive and a double-reduction set of gearing.

During the past year the news media has come in for its share of criticism. Some of it, without doubt, is justified. Much of it, like that which has been leveled against some of the rest of us, is not. We can sympathize with the newspapers and magazines, the radio and television stations. Like the coal industry, which I represent, they are a part of the free enterprise system. They depend upon advertising for their existence, and advertisers patronize those media which reach the most people interested in their product. The various news media are therefore In avid competition for circulation. Although they do have an unquestioned influence on the public, they are primarily a reflection of the public and it is in this context that we will consider them. Granted that this reflection is sometimes a bit distorted, let us admit that any subject which does not strike a responsive chord In the public will soon be dropped by the media.

"INTRODUCTION Site location and history The Holden Mine is a former underground copper mine that was developed and operated by the Howe Sound Mining Company (Howe Sound) from 1938 to 1957. The mine is located in north-central Washington State, U.S., near Lake Chelan in the area shown as Holden Village in Figure 1. Although Rio Tinto never owned or operated the mine, they are managing and funding a several hundred million dollar clean-up to prevent future water and soil contamination and to reclaim the former mine site under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Superfund process. The former mine included an onsite mill and a nearby housing complex for the miners. Howe Sound developed the mine as a series of near-horizontal drifts and tunnels, interspersed with stopes and shafts that connect different mine levels underground. The tunnels that were excavated to develop the mine total nearly 100 km in length.During development of the underground workings, Howe Sound removed more than 230,000 cubic meters (m3) of waste rock from the tunnels and deposited this material in two waste rock piles. Ore was processed from the mine in the onsite mill to produce a copper concentrate that was shipped off site for smelting. Roughly 10 million tonnes of tailings were produced as a by-product of the milling operation, most of which were deposited in three large impoundments (Tailings Piles 1, 2 and 3) directly south of and adjacent to Railroad Creek. Howe Sound closed the mine in 1957. In 1961, the property was transferred to Holden Village, Inc. (Holden Village), a not-for-profit corporation that maintains a year-round community and operates an interdenominational religious retreat in the former miners’ town. With the exception of the patented private land, the remainder of the Site is on National Forest lands and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The mine is remote. It is only accessible by boat or float plane from Chelan, Washington, up Lake Chelan to Lucerne, nearly 40 km. Vehicle access from Lucerne to the mine is provided through a 17.5-km-long winding gravel road that climbs 640 meters in elevation. The general site features are shown in Figure 2. Physical setting The Holden Mine is located on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range at an elevation between 975 and 1,050 m above mean sea level. Holden Mine was developed adjacent to Railroad Creek, which lies in a glacial U-shaped valley carved into the igneous and metamorphic bedrock with steep-sided slopes (Figure 2)."

"The Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine area, Cochrane district, in northern Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, which has a population of 25,856, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto.The property was staked in the late summer of 1909. The original four claims were staked by Benjamin Hollinger, after whom the mine was named. Development commenced in the autumn of 1909 and mill construction in the winter of 1910. A catastrophic forest fire swept the district in 19ll, destroying the surface plant, so that the original 300-ton mill was not completed until June 1912. From that date up to December 31, 1945, 44,280,750 tons of ore have yielded 13,636,796 oz. gold and 2,613,354 oz. silver. The total value of the production has been $363,638,315.0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of quartz veins, stringer lodes, and scockworks, with associated pyritized wall-rocks. The width of individual orebodies, as exposed by mining operations, ranges from 1 to 70 feet and averaged approximately 10 feet in 1942. The vein system forms a complex pattern in a favourable zone, which in places is 6,000 feet long and 4,000 feet wide. The deepest level being developed is 5,150 feet below the surface. Few veins are persistent for long distances, although some are continuous for more than 1,000 feet longitudinally and vertically.The host rocks consist of a closely folded series of Precambrian lava flows of Keewatin age. These are schistose and hydrothermally altered, but are believed to have originally been of intermediate to basic composition. The schistosity strikes N.70°E. and dips to the south at 75° to 80°. The structure of the formations is complex, but in the principal ore-bearing zone the general dip of the flows is to the south at a slightly flatter attitude than the schistosity."

CHARACTERIZING the annual meeting as the biggest and best one yet has happened so repeatedly that some may suspect it has become a conventional phrase, like "good morning," and yet, what else can be said when not only one but all the many who express an, opinion use exactly those words, while the first of the two adjectives refers to a physical fact that is established by count. Perhaps there were hose who thought it not the best, but if so they were too tactful to say it out loud. So without further ado . let us admit that the one hundred and thirty-ninth general meeting of the A. I. M. E. held; as our By-laws provide, in New York during the third week of February, was the biggest and best of them all. Perhaps it is because we appreciate friendliness more as we grow older, but somehow the friendly atmosphere seems to rise slowly in temperature with the passing of the years. The actual atmosphere on the opening morning was quite the contrary, Feb. 17 being the coldest clay, so far, of this winter, and the suburbanites claimed that their thermometers had registered 5" below zero when they got up, though the official records of the weather man did not go that low. From that time the temperature steadily rose until Thursday afternoon, when the official record of 66" constituted a record high for Feb. 20 at New York. The weather man explained it by learned discussion of highs and lows, but we suspect the A.I. M. E. members must have had something to do with it.

BACKGROUND Homestake Mining Company began milling operations at the Bulldog Mountain Mine near Creede, Colorado in 1969. The Bulldog Mill, rated at 350 tpd, produces a bulk flotation condentrate assaying about 180 oz/T Ag and 20% Pb, from heads of about 16 oz/T Ag and 2% Pb. The circuit is straightforward with two-stage grinding to 1-5% plus 65 mesh, followed by rougher and cleaner flotation. Reagents used are Z-6, Z-11, Aerofloat 242 and Aero Promoter 404, with an Aerofroth 65-MIBC mixture for a frother. Additional information on the geology, mine and mill are available in references (1) and (2). A flow sheet for the mill and CIP plant together is attached as Figure 1. Final flotation tailings normally vary from 1.5 - 2.0 oz/T Ag. These tailings are cycloned to produce sand for underground backfill. After cycloning, the sands are repulped and given a final scavenger float. This sand scavenger recovers a small additional amount of silver which recycles back to the main flotation circuit. The tailings are recycloned and pumped to the mine or, if the mine cannot accept sand, to tailings. The majority of the silver in the flotation tailings exists in the fine fractions; cycloning upgrades the slimes and lowers the assay of the sand. The sand, after scavenging, typically assays 0.5 oz/T Ag, and the slimes assay about 3.0-3.5 oz/T Ag. Horace Tabor. No 19th century Colorado mining man is better known but, unfortunately, probably less understood. He is little appreciated for his significant contributions to the industry and the state. A century ago, Tabor was headline news. The legend today, however, has become so all pervasive and so interwoven with fact that the two are hard to separate. For example, he never told Baby Doe on his death bed to hang on to the Matchless mine. Yet this has emerged as staple Tabor fare. So much attention has been focused on his matrimonial triangle that it overshadows the man. Symbol of mining's reward Tabor traveled west in the 1859 Pike's Peak gold rush. In the next generation, he came to symbolize the rewards mining might lavish on an individual. The Leadville Daily Herald (Sept. 10, 1882) could write, without exaggeration, that "the extent which the mining industry of Colorado is under obligation to Tabor cannot be easily estimated - what he has done for Leadville and Denver is patent to all." It had not come easily, nor had Tabor started out a success. His early placer mining at Payne's Bar, near present-day Idaho Springs, CO, had turned no fortune. So in 1860, he, his wife Augusta, and son went south to Colorado City, then over Ute Pass and up the Arkansas Valley to Oro City. Arriving soon after the initial discovery, Tabor staked a good claim. With a sharp eye, he and Augusta broadened their base by establishing a store. Both mining and business would pay dividends in the following years. By the season's end, though, Oro City was already declining. Always on the lookout for a richer district, Tabor and his family moved the next year across the mountains to promising Buckskin Joe. The familiar pattern followed, with the store and post office being the center of their attention. Mining investment and management now replaced the earlier physical panning and sluice operating. Seven years later, the Tabors abandoned Buckskin Joe and returned to Oro City. It had moved up California Gulch to be near the district's best mine, the Printer Boy. Middle class was not enough Middle class respectability, plus a steady income, was the Tabor's by the 1870s; fine as far as it went. But it proved far from the fortune Horace had always been seeking. Oro City languished in the backwash of Colorado mining and Tabor seemed like many men who had drifted around the Territory following the ebb and flow of mining. His faithful wife Augusta had been a steady factor in the success the family achieved. She helped year after year to operate the store and post office. Not simply the happy-go-lucky individual he has often been portrayed, Tabor was a hard working businessman/mine owner. An R. G. Dun and Company agent evaluated him in 1876 "Net worth $23,200. Is a very shrewd businessman and not liable to lose money, has a good chance to make money as he had no competition." Leadville: Tabor's silverlined-fortune After all those years on the Colorado mining frontier, in 1877, Lake County's wealthiest and most respected merchant made another move. It was short in distance, only 4 km (2.5 miles) down California Gulch, then a little north to a new mining camp. This new camp, soon named Leadville, gave birth to the Tabor fortune and legend. Middle-aged (Horace was 47), the Tabors once more set up their general store and found themselves in the midst of the open¬ing of a new district. This time silver beckoned and not the gold that had brought them West 18 years before.

"Zinc-Tin alloys were solidified in horizontal form and the obtained results were analyzed. During solidification the distribution of temperatures were measured by using thermocouples located strategically along the length of the samples. From the measured temperatures the following parameters were derived; the local temperature gradient, the cooling rate and the velocities of the liquid and solids fronts. Comparing the structure of the samples and the values of these parameters it was found that the temperature gradient reaches minimum values of as low as - 0.6 °C/cm, and velocities of the fronts of around 0.1 cm/s. In addition, the grain size was measured along the samples. The results are presented and discussed in the frame of the results previously obtained for other alloys.IntroductionGenerally solidification leads to two types of grain morphologies: columnar and equiaxed. The origin of each one has been the subject of numerous theoretical and experimental researches in the field of metallurgy for many years [1-7]. The columnar-to-equiaxed transition, CET, is considered as an object of high technological relevance with respect to the directional solidification of metallic alloys. This structure transition may be sharp or gradual and it has been reported to be dependent on thermal conditions associated with the casting process, including melt convection, heat transfer coefficients at the metal-mold interface, growth rates, thermal gradients, cooling rates, transport of solute, alloy composition, melt superheat, mold temperature, mold design, casting size, casting geometry, and the concentration of nucleating particles. As a consequence, it is critical for industrial applications to understand the physical mechanisms which control this transition during solidification. Many studies highlight the importance of the relative growth of the equiaxed and columnar grains and develop expressions or numerical procedures to describe a criterion for the CET. A number of experimental investigations reported in the literature suggest that the CET occurs when GL in the melt reaches a minimum critical value [5-7]."

Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather 20° in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

The question of what stress condition exists in the hangingwall of tabular stopes remains topical and largely unanswered. Limited field data exist to quantify the situation and provide calibration for investigative computer modelling exercises. Work conducted in1989 and 1990 under a Chamber of Mines Research Organization (now the CSIR: Division of Mining Technology) programme of research into the behaviour and benefits of backfill may assist with this situation. The original work was motivated by the premise that the improved hangingwall stability in backfilled panels (identified by rockfall accident analyses) is due to a change in the hangingwall stress regime. Current, largely theoretical, studies into mechanisms of stope hangingwall behaviour and support interaction could benefit from considering these data.
