In order to more accurately predict longwall surface subsidence over the Pittsburgh No. 8 Coal in Eastern Ohio, North American Coal Corporation's Quarto Mining Company undertook or participated in several subsidence studies. Due to the changing roof geology and rapid variations in the amount of cover two separate areas were investigated at two different mines to determine the subsidence response if any to these changes. Data generated from these studies were compared with NCB derived,data for accuracy and then used to predict subsidence under houses, gas lines and other critical man made structures. The following report summarizes the results of these studies as well as the subsidence case histories of gas lines, transmission towers, houses and water wells. Problems that were encountered during both phases of this process (investigation and subsequent application) are also included.

Introduction It is the morning after and there is one monumental hangover among many, if not most, of the oil companies that invested in mining in the past decade. How an oil company looks at mining depends on the time period. A few years back, around the time of investment, they were probably looking at a balance sheet of their own that was beginning to go wild. Many of their commodity prices already increased two-, three-, or fourfold, with no end in sight. There was a need to invest their earnings someplace before the stockholders or the government got too interested. And that someplace needed to be an industry where their own management skills could be applied. In mining there was an industry amazingly similar to their own. Both worked with nonrenewable natural resources, dealt with the same types of government agencies, and had the same type of critics and pressures from the general population. Oil executives saw mining as an industry that was somewhat backward as compared with their own. They also saw how a generous ration of the capital and management skills, so handsomely bestowed upon the oil industry, could be used to great advantage. But, looking at mining through the eyes of an oil company today, this is what might be seen: • An industry that has been spectacularly unprofitable for the past few years; • An industry of many commodities, any of which can go bad on short notice for protracted periods, for a variety of unpredictable and uncontrollable reasons, or for no reason at all; • A labor-intensive industry, often beset by labor problems. And with only limited potential for further economic mechanization or automation in today's primitive mining environment; • An industry confronted with external, foreign, and political problems, with no reasonable expectation of near-term relief; and • An industry that does not appear to have many "up" periods in its immediate future. And, there is little chance for either big, fast bucks or long periods of large, steady earnings. What Went Wrong? The visions of a few years back seemed as correct then as today's viewpoints seem to be now. What happened to change these views? What went wrong? The simplest and easiest answer is that if the economy was normal back then, nothing would have gone wrong. This is an easy answer but, unfortunately, probably incorrect. Let us take a broad overview. Certain events enabled and prompted oil companies to invest heavily in mining. These same events were major factors in precipitating the worldwide recession that has grievously injured mining and has brought those mining investments into disrepute. Drilling and sampling are responsible for most of the costs during mineral exploration, especially in multi-elements and polymetallic deposits, such as iron, manganese and bauxite deposits. On these deposits, often it is necessary to estimate multiple attributes at several granulometric fractions, ie distinct particle sizes. This paper investigates the effect of sampling at a close spacing grid only the head grades for the multiple chemical species in iron ore deposits. The remaining required data at the various grain sizes are sampled at a sparse grid. The derived geological model is checked for precision and accuracy comparing the output obtained against a model obtained using a complete isotopic data set including head grades and chemical analysis at each granulometric fraction analysed at all sampled positions. Among the several tested alternatives, the best procedure for dealing with the posed problem involved utilising the correlation coefficients between the grades at distinct fractions to obtain an isotopic database prior to interpolation. Cokriging was the method used, based on the intrinsic coregionalisation model. Estimates were obtained with the quality needed for the proposal of the study. Results showed that at least 50 per cent of the blocks were estimated with errors less than ten per cent relative to the grades obtained at the reference model, using only 15 per cent of the granulochemical data employed to obtain the reference model. The methodology also preserved the correlations between the attributes in their several granulometric fractions on the estimated model.

Between 1989 and 2004 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)constructed several major wastewater and water tunnels associated with three major projects in the Boston area of eastern Massachusetts. There were many similarities and differences in the bedrock conditions encountered and among the contractual approaches for these independent projects. Through a clarification of the approach similarities and analysis of the contract differences, this paper addresses and presents what are considered to be valuable lessons learned. In doing so, the paper follows the evolution of such disparate issues as contract conditions, baseline reports and dispute review boards. The authors believe that the lessons learned even represent what, in certain cases, could be referred to as “universal truths” that are intended to have application to the next generation of tunneling contracts.

Demand for metals will continue to grow as global population numbers and prosperity levels steadily increase. Consequently, there will continue to be a need to design and construct new metallurgical plants. Business success in general requires projects to be financially successful and return appropriate value to their owners. However, in the metals industry, private and public sector financing sources have become very sensitive to the perceived inability of projects to contain costs and meet other business objectives. Thus, the capital for projects has become more difficult and expensive to obtain. It is instructive to note that Ernst and Young (2011) identified that: “Delivery of predictable project results bestows competitive advantage and market confidence to those corporations who successfully instill this discipline”. The implication for future projects is that they must be systematically developed to minimize perceived risks—and more importantly—to demonstrate that the risks are managed to achieve the business case. Then, provided that the project has been developed in a well-structured way, project success can again be defined as a project with: a final cost within 10% of the budget approved at the end of FEL3, when the project is properly defined and the permit conditions are agreed upon; a start-up date within three months of the definitive, scheduled startup date; production levels at 85% of design capacity within a year of starting commercial operation; production meeting the target environmental restrictions; and with zero lost time accidents during construction and startup. The plant design is one of many integrated activities required to achieve these objectives. This book represents a valuable link between the existing engineering literature that encompasses a wide range of engineering fundamental textbooks and design manuals and the project management literature such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® (Project Management Institute, 2014). It is evident throughout this book, that the design team is a small but essential part of a much larger project team comprising the project management, construction management, and construction contractor staff. LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico, the birthplace f the atomic bomb, is one of the most famous-and mysterious-places in the world. It leaped into fame on Aug. 6, 1945, when the first atomic bomb burst over Hiroshima. Unheard of until that day, its present life is as hidden from most people as was its very existence in pre-Hiroshima days. Then, those who did know of it dared not breathe their knowledge. "What do you tell your wife when you go to Shangri La?" was the favorite quip of the few consultants who made regular trips from east or west to Los Alamos during the tense months when the bomb was in the making. Security regulations made it impossible even to hint at the rigid secrecy surrounding the project. The puzzled wives in question knew only that their husbands had top priority on airplane flights to Albuquerque. When they had verified the safe arrival of the flight, they undoubtedly breathed a sigh of relief. If they could have visualized the rest of the trip, the sigh of relief would have been replaced by a state of tizzy, until a telegram came saying "Arriving home on Flight X" (on a nice safe airplane).

After attending two clays of technical sessions and enjoying the luncheons and dinners of the meeting, visitors, on the following days, could see the opening ceremonies and events of the Olympic Games, which started on July 30 and continued to Aug. 14. Such d spectacle can be seen only once in a generation in this country.

FEATURES of the second fall meeting of the Petroleum Division for 1941, held at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, Oct. 29-30, were the forum on the Paloma Plan on Thursday after- noon, the large attendance from east of the Rockies, and the dinner on Wednesday evening sponsored by the Southern California Section and at which President Suman spoke on the strategic minerals and metals situation. The attendance was large and the technical fare uniformly good ; the presiding officers had the proceedings well in hand at all times and kept things humming. Some- times it was necessary to taper off the discussion because of pressure on time. All this was due to careful groundwork before the respective sessions. These presiding officers deserve citation: L. W. Huebel, Howard Pyle, E. K. Parks, Carlton Beal, E. G. Trostel. R. W. French, Jr., John Dodge, and H. N. Marsh. The Los Angeles local commit- tees and the Southern California Section deserve much credit for the arrangements, which were recognized by suitable resolutions at the end of the meeting.

During the last 20 years, more than 80 km (50 miles) of tunnels have been constructed in the Los Angeles, CA area. Recent projects include The East Central Interceptor Sewer (ECIS), completed in 2004. It spans more than 18 km (11 miles). The Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), completed in 2005, spans 11 km (7 miles). And the 2-km (1.3-mile) Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s Gold Line Eastside Extension (MCGLEE) was completed in 2006. All of the tunnel routes lay beneath heavily populated urban environments so minimizing ground surface settlement was critical to the success of the projects. Previous tunneling efforts in the Los Angeles area using open shield methods resulted in significant settlement that damaged roads, utilities, buildings and other structures. Earth pressure balance (EPB), or slurry machines, were specified for these projects to reduce subsidence risk. The contractors chose EPB tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the work. The closed and pressured face of the EPB TBM reduces loss of ground at the tunnel face and, when the machines are used in combination with gasketed pre-cast tunnel liners and backfill grout behind the installed segments, losses from over-cut of the excavated surface are also reduced.

ALTHOUGH it is universally accepted that free oxygen is A necessary in a cyanide solution for the dissolution of gold and silver-in accordance with Elsner's equation that 2Au + 4KCN + 0 + H20 = 2KAu (CN), + 2KOH- little has been written and insufficient attention paid to the drop in extraction due apparently to loss of dissolved oxygen in mill solutions. Aeration or oxygenation of cyanide solutions has been more or less successfully accomplished by various types of agitators such as the Dorr (with or without air lifts), Pachuca tanks and more recently "Turbo-mixers" and Denver "Super- agitators"; also by the introduction of chemical oxidizing agents such as Solozone (Na,O,) . At the Wright-Hargreaves and other mines in the Kirkland Lake camp, the introduction of this reagent at the rate of about 1.25 oz. per ton of ore applied to the feed of the ball mills has certainly been beneficial.

Lack of selectivity in mixed mineral flocculation can be attributed to one or more of the following factors: dissolved ion interference, heterocoagulation, mechanical entrapment in flocs and entrainment of fines between flocs. In a study of apatite- dolomite system, it was determined that dissolved ions do not have a significant effect on selectivity. Heterocoagulation was minimized by choosing proper process conditions and addition of a dispersant. Mechanical entrapment was proved to be insignificant and efforts were made to reduce entrainment by choosing an appropriate method of separation of flocs from fines. A new factor termed "polymer induced entrapment" which occurs due to limited affinity of the polymer to the mineral which is not flocculated is postulated to be the cause for the loss of selectivity.

High value materials, such as gold, platinum and other precious metals are subject to loss through unauthorized removal from mines, smelters, refiners, and other places where such materials are processed. A study published in 20011 determined that between 1994 and 1998 an average of 603 kilograms of gold per year was stolen from South African miners and subsequently recovered. This does not include the gold that was stolen but not recovered. At 2011 prices, 603 kilograms of gold would be worth approximately $33 million. Mine security personnel believe that the unrecovered stolen gold far exceeds what is recovered2. Traditionally, metal detectors have been used to screen personnel leaving secure areas to discourage such unauthorized removal. However, with the current near-record prices of gold, platinum, and other precious metals, it has become worthwhile for people exiting a facility to walk out with quantities of product that are too small for ordinary metal detectors to register, resulting in substantial financial losses.

DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company's policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico. Coal consumption has increased globally by 57% over the last ten years. Underground mining typically provides coal of the highest calorific value and accounts for the greatest proportion of production. Despite a negative environmental image and indeed impact, this industry appears likely to thrive on the global scale for many years to come. Such mining consumes large amounts of electricity with implications for carbon dioxide emission at power plants and emits substantial quantities of the powerful greenhouse gas methane. In response to this significant carbon footprint, the European Union has funded research to examine the potential for a range of improvement technologies in a project entitled Low Carbon Mine Site Energy Initiatives (LOWCARB). Coal properties related to seams and mines, together with longwall characteristics, provide the basis for research into modelling optimally efficient methane drainage with a view to assisting mining as well as maximising electricity generation at surface and hence oxidation of the methane. Possible systems for the oxidation of very low concentration methane in ventilation air, which contributes the greatest greenhouse gas impact due to the volumes emitted, have been studied and modelled. Simulation and investigation of intelligent optimisation of electricity demand patterns provide the basis for reducing the demand peaks at mines and hence the cost and ultimately the carbon footprint of a mine, while specific investigations have been undertaken into ventilation efficiency at an unusually challenging mine and simulation of mine water pumping in order to develop an innovative method to monitor pumping systems efficiency. For post-mining use, the potential of disused shafts for compressed air energy storage to improve the operation of future electricity grids with high renewable energy penetration by reducing peak generation capacity requirements has been studied. While underground coal mining will always by definition be related to a significant carbon footprint, this paper provides an overview of a set of initiatives that can make a positive environmental impact while controlling costs across a huge global industry.

By Sims Some two years ago we began investigating low coke button bituminous coal for use at our Bound Brook, New Jersey plant as a replacement for anthracite. Since August, 1957 the plant has been operating continously on this coal with the exception of a new 200,000#/hr, cyclone boiler. This study was motivated not from our desire to conduct combustion research, but for the sole purpose of reducing our steam costs, The indications were that the economics were greatly in favor of the use of the bituminous coal. The attempts to reduce the costs have developed some knowledge that has enabled this program to succeed reasonably well as will be discussed later by Mr. Ludden. The production of steam size anthracite is dependent upon either the reclamation of old culm banks or the breakage in the production of the domestic sizes. The anthracite industry has not as yet been able to cut, its mining costs to the point where the production of steam sizes has become a profitable business. This has resulted in two basic problems: (1) A constantly rising price in an attempt to have those sizes carry their share of the cost and, (2) Periodic shortages of supply when the demand is good but the market price prohibits the mining of anthracite to produce those sizes only, These conditions have made the long range forecast appear as though the price would go even higher and/or the supply at times be critically short.

For many years, the accepted method of Measuring the Velocity of Detonation (VOD) in blast holes has been to use an electric cable of a constant resistance per metre. Thus as the wire is consumed by the explosive in the blast hole, the change in resistance is monitored and when this data is plotted against the time period of the in hole explosion, the VOD can be calculated.

"Limited analysis of combustion gas streams where carbon capture is not of interest is done mainly to ascertain operation parameters. Stringent regulations on acid gases and particulates promote careful flue gas analysis. Unregulated components are typically not analyzed. Typically not more than four points (two in the boiler, and one each in the flue and the stack) are sampled. A successful oxy-fuel process with carbon capture and compression is anticipated to require as many as 12 sample points with analysis for water, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, NOx, SOx, and carbon monoxide. Carbon dioxide captured for beverages produces a high value product and the cost associated with analysis is warranted. However, carbon capture for disposal must keep all costs to a minimum. This paper will compare alternative approaches for cost-effective sampling and analysis of the carbon dioxide product streams from oxy-fuel combustion, through all stages of production through compression and pipeline/vessel delivery.IntroductionAnalysis of gases in an oxy-combustion process with carbon capture is essential to the operations of the oxy-fired boiler and the subsequent collection, compression, and purification of carbon dioxide. The process is charged with pure oxygen and not-so-pure carbon in the form of coal at the front end, generating a product of mainly carbon dioxide with traces of argon, nitrogen, sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds, oxygen, hydrogen, and mercury. It is possible that hydrogen chloride and hydrogen sulfide may also be present in trace amounts [1]. The trace components primarily come from impurities contained in coal such as water, sulfur, nitrogen, and volatile organic compounds. Coal also contains a good deal of mineral matter that is transformed into ash during combustion, becoming particulates that can complicate the analysis regimes utilizing standard analytical equipment."
