General aluminium corrosion charts based on 1100 alloy listing product and temperature have been developed by AFSA, mainly from available sources. The categories of corrosion expectation are fairly wide. As a result the charts are more useful in indicating what is not suited as distinct from what is. The question of how to develop useful information is assessed. Having discarded improbable options one is left with the need to refine the possible. Within each alloy group corrosion potential differs. From an engineering application point of view, the corrosion resisting marine alloys, the 5xxx series show increasing corrosion as the percentage of Magnesium increases. An important issue is that as the welding filler used for 5xxx series is Mg rich (to avoid hot cracking), the filler is likely to show the weakest resistance. In addition, when subjected to fatigue loading, the preference for critical joints is to dress the joint to the level of the base material. Overheating of the weld extends the HAZ zone and weakens the material as Mg moves to the grain boundaries. Indicator chart refinement approaches suited to aluminium use in commercial transport are discussed.

Overexcavation and ground loss events during pressurized-face TBMadvance in soft ground can result in unplanned deformations above the tunnel and damage to existing infrastructure. Successfully managing the risk of this occurring is crucial for any project in an urban area to proceed. Common risk management approaches include a combination of establishing suitable ranges of TBM operational parameters and using geotechnical instrumentation for deformation monitoring. Another risk management tool is material flow reconciliation, which varies depending on the specified mining method and the equipment choices by the contractor. This paper compares recent and ongoing projects in the Pacific Northwest regarding overexcavation risk management.

MEETING for the thirteenth time in New York as part of the five-ring circus known as the Annual Meeting A.I.M.E., the Coal Division experienced a wartime boom in attendance. Technical sessions were crowded and whereas 65 seats were set up for the annual luncheon meeting of the Division over 100 members showed up, many of whom had to be fed elsewhere. Possibly the Coal Division should adopt "13" as its lucky number. Discussions at technical sessions, formal and informal, were lively. Those papers containing material directly concerned with the war, or containing information that might be usable for war industries, were enthusiastically received. Some criticism was made in regard to the present method of handling discussions and it was suggested that better success would be had in getting discussions in the record by the use of hired reporters. This is being considered by the executive committee of the Coal Division.

ABSTRACT: In most cases, a refractory repair involves dealing with used refractory linings above shoulder height, defining these as overhead refractories. This paper details a method of personnel protection involving a low-pressure inflatable balloon system, installed to prevent the dislodgement and freefall of in-situ refractories. This system has been successfully applied to numerous types of vessels in the process industries in the last three to four years. This paper, prepared for the CIM Conference of Metallurgists held in Vancouver, British Columbia in October 2010, outlines details of the system and gives examples of successful applications.

Prior to the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, bord-and-pillar mining of the number two seam in the Witbank coalfields often resulted in small pillars with low factors of safety. At the Goedehoop Colliery, number two seam pillar stability is also affected by top and bottom coaling, while at Greenside Colliery, stability was further reduced by additional loading from a surface mineral residue deposit. This compromised the stability of the number two seam workings, impacting the safe mining of the overlying number four seam reserves. To extend the life of mine of both operations, an alternative risk management approach using designated enhanced monitoring districts was implemented to safely mine the number four seam reserves. This paper presents the use of geophone arrays to monitor micro-fracturing in number two seam pillars and the interburden between number two seam and number four seam, thereby enabling early detection of potential instability during overmining of the number two seam. Risk was assessed using fault and event tree analyses to determine acceptable failure probabilities. Automated seismic data processing distinguished micro-fracturing from noise, supported by extensive evacuation procedures for effective risk management. This approach facilitated the safe extraction of 4.70 Mt of number four seam coal. The study quantifies the efficacy of geophone monitoring in optimising coal recovery over low factors of safety pillars and assesses the application of Van der Merwe’s (2019) time-based formulae for pillar stability analysis for this project.

I appreciate this opportunity to discuss with you OPIC's new policies designed to assist U.S. minerals companies in developing new sources of minerals overseas. A comparison of recent figures on U.S. investment in mineral exploration, development and production gives results which are remarkable --and disturbing. Through the 1960's the flow of U.S. foreign direct investment in mining and smelting in the developed and less developed countries were nearly equal. However, by 1973, roughly 80% of all exploration expenditures by mining companies was taking place in the developed countries and principally in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Clearly it is to the interests of both the developing countries and the United States to put these figures back in better balance. As you may be aware, the administration as a whole is examining systematically what can be done by government to reduce the disincentives and increase the incentives to mineral investment in the less developed countries --the LDCs. A subgroup of the National Advisory Council chaired by the Treasury Department has been formed to coordinate U. S. Government policy and program efforts relating to mineral and energy development in these countries. Among other matters, this subgroup will examine how public policies could positively influence the private investment decision-making process in the minerals industry.

"With up to 2,300 m (7,545 ft) of rock on top of it, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is scheduled to go into regular operation in December 2016 in the Swiss Alps, is not only the world’s longest, but also the deepest railway tunnel ever built. Accordingly, the temperatures in the tunnel are very high, with the surrounding rock expected to reach 45° C (113° F) once the tunnel is fully operational. Since unrestricted rail operations are only permitted in temperatures of 40° C (104° F) or less, the heat has to be controlled with suitable equipment. Large fans developed and built especially for this application by TLT-Turbo GmbH provide fresh air for regular operations as well as during maintenance and repair work. Separate fans ensure that the emergency exits are properly ventilated in case of fire. In addition to coming up with a technical solution that could handle the special challenges of this project, the engineers and planners had to develop detailed preliminary plans as well as a sophisticated logistics and installation concept.The Gotthard Base Tunnel consists of two 57-km (35-mile) long tubes, one in each direction. Including all connecting and access tunnels, the entire underground system measures 152 km (95 miles). At Faido and Sedrun, at approximately 16 and 36 km (9 and 23 miles) respectively, two multifunction stations were built that cut each of the two tubes into three sections of roughly equal length. Here, trains can make emergency stops and change tracks, if necessary. This is also where eight large axial fans made by TLT were installed that exchange the air, i.e. they extract a certain amount of heated air and inject the same amount of cool fresh air a few hundred meters further down the train tracks. In addition to the four exhaust and four supply fans, 24 so-called jet fans were installed along with associated components like silencers, shut-off dampers, drives and lubrication systems from TLT.In addition to exchanging the air, these fans are used to enable maintenance and repair operations in the tunnel. Current plans call for blocking each tunnel tube for one night per week in order to perform preventive maintenance work, thus enhancing the tunnel’s overall functionality and availability. During these hours, many people will be in the tunnel who require fresh air. “One of the major criteria for winning this bid was the fans’ ability to quickly switch between a wide-range of modes. TLT fans are among the best in the world in this regard,” said Andreas Kuhn, TLT’s project manager for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, about the selection of his company’s fans for this project."

When methods to prevent the occurrence of fire in underground mines fail, the next line of defense is to rapidly and reliably detect the developing fire, so that subsequent evacuation and control procedures can be safely and successfully implemented. To provide this capability requires an understanding of the operational principles of different types of fire sensors, their merits as well as their limitations, and performance characteristics of the monitoring systems that control and process sensor data; an understanding of how fires develop and the different types of fires that can occur, along with their characteristics and the hazards they present; an understanding of the impact of the mine environment and routine mining activities, not only in terms of these effects on fire sensors but also in terms of the impact of mine ventilation and mine geometry on fire growth, fire characteristics and the detection process. All of these factors are components of the technology of fire detection, and when insufficient knowledge of any of these components exists, the ability to implement adequate mine fire detection systems is diminished. Within the last decade, significant advances have been made in fire detection technology applicable to underground mines. These advances include not only the development of improved sensors and better monitoring systems, but also an expanded understanding of how to deploy sensors, set sensor alert/alarm levels, account for ventilation effects, etc. In addition, there has been an increase in our knowledge of the types of fires that occur, the types of combustibles involved, characteristic times for fire growth and development, the levels of heat, smoke and gas that are produced and the hazards that result. It is the intent of this paper to provide not an overview of current mine fire detection technology and, also, to present data obtained for some smoke sensors that have potential for use in underground mines. The paper will also discuss the data, information and resources that are currently available and seek to identify those areas most in need of further research and development.

The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60 percent of U.S. underground coal production. During this time, about 80 percent of ground-fall-related fatalities occurred in areas where the mine roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current longwall support practices in the United States, during a period between 2010 and 2017, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) visited a sample of 25 longwall mines representing nearly 50 percent of the currently active longwall mines operating in all of the major U.S. longwall producing regions. The data presented here indicate that the types and amount of roof support being installed in modern U.S. longwall mines have reduced ground-fall accident and injury rates to levels never seen before. However, the complete elimination of unintended roof falls in U.S. longwall mines has remained elusive. The data in this paper can be used by mine operators and engineers to determine where their chosen type and density of roof support occur on the spectrum of observations contained in this database. Additionally, this data can be used to enhance, supplement and support additional research on longwall gateroad support systems.

The resulting data was obtained from a wide variety of overburden depths, geologic conditions, mining heights, ground conditions, support practices, and gateroad configurations. The data collected is reported using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results from the research update previous efforts in classifying mining accidents and injuries as well as current support practices. This data provides a necessary background for future research aimed at further reduction of ground fall accidents and injuries. INTRODUCTION Maintaining ground stability in gateroad entries is essential for longwall productivity and safety (Campoli, 2015). In 2015, 148 unintentional roof falls were reported in US longwall mines. About 34% of these resulted in mineworker injuries. Safety considerations not only include injury from roof and rib falls but also egress from the longwall face during an emergency (Mucho et al., 1999). Over the past 30 years, a number of researchers have studied longwall tailgate support performance (Mirabile, 2015). This research aims to take a snapshot of the ground support installed in modern US longwall mines and provide a supplement and update to the overview provided by Barczak (2005). This will provide a framework for future research into improving gateroad support systems. BACKGROUND Large unplanned roof falls at or above the primary support or those impeding travel and/or ventilation must be reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Reportable roof falls, normalized based on production in million metric tons, generally relate to the amount of roof exposed during the mining process (Pappas and Mark, 2012) and provide an evidence-based statistical background for this review of current support practices. Figure 1 shows the reportable roof fall rate in US underground longwall mines for the period 2006-2015 (MSHA, 2016). Over the past decade, roof fall rates have shown a gradual decrease with numbers now at a rate nearly half of what was observed just five years ago. However, over the past few years, roof fall rates in US longwall mines appear to have stagnated at levels just over 1 per 2,000,000 tonnes mined."

This paper looks briefly at some of the agreements and types of royalties that may be met during exploration activities, but does not go into details relating to them. Agreements can either make or break a deal or relationship. A well drafted, comprehensive and fair agreement can create good relations and trust among the parties and will go a long way towards making a deal work. In the best of all worlds the agreement will be put away and not need to be referred to after it has been signed (but it will be there if needed to sort out potential problems). On the other hand, a poorly drafted agreement or one that is inappropriate to the circumstances or unfair to one of the parties can break a deal and end up with the parties facing each other in that expensive, unproductive and time-consuming occupation ? a lawsuit. Accordingly, it is advisable to involve professional advisers with any agreement. The straightforward one may involve no more that a read through whereas the more complex agreement will require considerable involvement. There is, however, one rule for every explorationist to remember: a professional adviser is only an adviser. His responsibility is to make sure that you have the necessary information to make a reasoned decision but the decision is yours, not the adviser?s. It is your deal, you are going to have to live with it, and it is inappropriate for an adviser to introduce new concepts or amend negotiated ones without your specific instructions. Mineral exploration agreements, although basically option, acquisition and joint participation agreements, come in all the shapes and forms, appropriate to give effect to the endless variety of deals negotiated by the ever-active minds of explorationists. You will note the reference to "joint participation agreements" rather than "joint venture agreements". The latter term was purposely avoided because, with the current activity of explorationists from common law jurisdictions in civil law jurisdictions, it has become necessary for the explorationist to become familiar with corporations and shareholders agreements. As most of you are no doubt aware, under the civil law system a joint venture is normally not recognized as a legal entity and, therefore, joint participation in projects is usually by way of corporations.

I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

"Before energy can be saved in the materials industry, the process must be understood. At the same time, baby boomers are starting to retire. New people are entering the field without experience and training especially in methods to save energy. Various classroom courses, seminars, books, software, and websites are available for the professional to better understand the industry with the ultimate goal to reduce energy use. This paper is a review of what is currently available with some comments on potential needs.IntroductionEnergy use is high within the materials industry. For the United States, the primary metal industry uses 8% of all energy used in manufacturing (Figure 1 )1 or 1, 736 trillion BTUs per year. Sadly, while energy use is high, energy management is not universal within the industry. Counting both internal programs and external such as the utility supplier, equipment manufacturers, federal and state programs, only 66% of primary metals companies participate in an energy management activity1.For the materials field, process heating is the majority of the energy use in a plant2. Understanding and optimizing process heating is a critical need for materials energy professionals. Surprisingly, process heating is not necessarily the work addressed within an energy program. The U.S. 2006 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (see Table 1) found more primary metal companies addressing lighting with 31 % participation versus 15% with process heating work even though energy used in lighting tends to be a minor (in the range ofl-3% ofa typical plant's energy use)."

The transformation of raw iron ore into high quality steel can take place via several processes. A general consistent theme involves the upgrading of the iron ores via methods such as flotation and magnetic separation, the preparation of an agglomerate such as via pelletization or sintering, the smelting of the agglomerate into a high grade iron product, and the further refining of iron into specific steel alloys. Each of these steps admit potential for optimizations and alternatives, and the process overall is critical to meeting the world’s continuing iron demands.

"Lakeshore Gold’s Bell Creek Mill is located in Timmins, Ontario. The mill has been in operation since 2009 and has undergone several small expansions since then. In 2012 - 2013 the first major mill expansion was commissioned raising the mill capacity from 2,000tpd to 3,150tpd. This was done through the installation of a new ROM ore truck dumping facility, jaw crusher, ore storage dome, SAG mill, leach tank, CIL tank, and electrowinning cell. This paper will cover the equipment installed to raise the tonnage as well as the commissioning of the new equipment including problems encountered and how these problems were solved.IntroductionLake Shore Gold acquired the Bell Creek Mill, along with the Bell Creek Mine, from the Porcupine Gold Mines Joint Venture, a joint venture between Goldcorp Canada Ltd. and Kinross Gold Corporation, in December 2007.The Bell Creek mill, which processed ore from the Bell Creek Mine has consistently achieved recoveries of over 95%, is a conventional gold mill circuit, involving crushing and two stage ball mill grinding, gravity and leaching, followed by Carbon-In-Pulp (CIP) process for gold recovery. The facility had been placed on care and maintenance in 2002. At the beginning of 2009, the mill had been refurbished with an initial capacity of 800 tonnes per day and was subsequently refurbished to a capacity of 1,500 tonnes per day near the end of the third quarter of that year. The Mill was then expanded in 2010 to a capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day.In late 2011, the Company commenced a 50% expansion of its milling facility, from a processing capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day to 3,150 tonnes per day. Phase 1 of the expansion, which mainly involved enhancements to the solution circuit (“back end”) and increased the mill’s capacity to 2,500 tonnes per day, was completed at the end of 2012. Commissioning of Phase 2 of the expansion, to a capacity of 3,150 tonnes per day, commenced at the end of July 2013."

"This paper presents an overview of the major landslide hazards in open pit mines in China, the currently used landslide control and monitoring techniques, and development of a new slope control technique incorporating the reinforcement, sliding force monitoring, remote sensing and forecasting in one system in order to constrain the displacement of the sliding blocks in the landslide to minimized the influenced area and provide precise warnings timely for the imminent landslides. For implementation of the new technique, a novel rock cable with large deformation and high resistance (also known as HE cable) was developed, which can elongate as long as 2m. At the same time, the necessary and sufficient condition for initiating a landslide and energy balance equations are formulated. Based on the proposed mathematical models and Beidou satellite system, the software and data transmission hardware for remote sensing and forecasting were developed the new landslide control technique has been applied successfully in 245 landslide sites in 12 provinces across China. In this article, two practical application cases in the open pit mines are reported.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the countries in the world with the most widely distributed landslides and suffering the heaviest damage. According to the incomplete statistics, landslide hazards have caused death of hundreds of people and direct economic losses of several hundred million RMB each year. The landslide hazards have a great impact on the life and property safety of the people, safety of the infrastructure, as well as the social stability. Thus development of new techniques for forecasting and prediction of the landslides is imperative and of great importance. In general, the forecasting and prediction of the landslides consists of three major aspects, i.e. sliding time forecasting, landslide activity intensity forecasting and landslide hazard degree forecasting. Since a considerable part of the landslide-suspected area are adjacent to the residential areas or important infrastructures, development of the advanced landslide control and monitoring techniques to cope with the sliding time forecasting problem is more important.Over the past one hundred years, the most widely used slope monitoring techniques are based on displacement monitoring (Xu, et al. 2007; Toshitaka, 1998). In the early days owing to the limitation of the technology and equipment, the ground surface displacement and underground water level change were inspected mainly by man power for inferring the possibility of a landslide. In recent several decades, more and more ground surface displacement monitoring devices were brought to the market, such as the automatic total station, theodolite, digital level, borehole inclinometer and GPS based instruments, etc. Based on these modern techniques, some advanced instruments have been developed and applied to the landslide monitoring, for example, the “landslides early warning monitoring system” (Leonardo, et al. 2002), the “In-SAR” technique (Reevea, et al. 2000), the GPS and satellite geodetic survey based technique (Reevea, et al. 2000), and real-time telemetry technology (Xu, et al. 2007). These monitoring approaches have made significant contributions to the landslide disaster monitoring and forecasting. The major limitations for the ground surface displacement monitoring techniques are lie in the inconsistence between the displacement in ground surface and that in the sliding surface for the sliding mass, resulting in low degree of forecasting accuracy."

Coal is mined by both surface and underground methods and its extraction is normally characterized by numerous hazards that can lead to catastrophic accidents, which result in devastating effects such as injuries or fatalities, damage to mining assets, and destruction of mineral resources. These hazards exist due to the ability of coal to support combustion and its association with toxic, flammable, and explosive gases. Underground coal mining entails higher safety risks than opencast coal mining, chiefly because of issues relating to mine ventilation and mine collapse. Furthermore, coal mine collapses mostly occur due to crumbling of mining supports, especially in room and pillar mining systems. To avoid such adverse occurrences, safety management systems need to be in place. This study reviews the various technological safety systems and principles that are used for safe-rescue and self-escape of miners in underground coal fires, particularly in South Africa, using data obtained from Mines Rescue Services in Carltonville, South Africa. The outcome of the review shows that practising safety culture has been given priority across many South African underground coal mines through setting up safety management systems and encouraging workers to stay committed to safety principles.

"SYNOPSISKnown health hazards associated with the breathing of respirable dusts, particularly silica dust, during mining are becoming a great concern in many parts of the world. The search for effective and low cost dust control methods for underdeveloped countries will help in improving the productivity and keeping the mine environment safe. This article addresses the problem by providing suggestions concerning the easiest and most cost effective methods to control respirable dust in mining and mineral processing operations. INTRODUCTIONMedical BackgroundLung diseases caused by dust in mining operations have been recognized by mankind since the time of the Roman Empire. The writings of Pliny the Younger on natural history reported on maladies associated with dust in mining in the first century AD. However, no significant advances in controlling the lung diseases of miners came about for many centuries. The effects of mineral dusts were further described by Georgius Agricola in his sixteenth century book on mining (Agricola, 1556). After the appearance of Agricola""s book, lung diseases were more readily recognized, but the nature and severity of the ailments associated with mineral dusts could not be readily interpreted.In 1896, the discovery of x-rays by Roentgen advanced the diagnosis of lung diseases and the knowledge of what causes these diseases.
