Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

Mineral exploration has evolved into a sophisticated science which uses powerful scientific tools to make mineral discoveries. In addition to their usefulness in performing mineral exploration, these scientific tools can assist the exploration geologist in assessing environmental conditions at exploration sites. During exploration, environmental data acquisition should focus on data collection efforts which can be easily integrated into exploration activities, and should provide information needed for pre-feasibility and preliminary engineering design studies. Environmental studies performed during exploration should also include an environmental liabilities audit and a fatal flaw analysis to assess whether there are any unresolvable environmental or regulatory issues affecting the project. Performing extensive environmental baseline studies during exploration and project evaluation is neither necessary nor recommended. This paper describes opportunities to integrate environmental data collection with mineral exploration activities. This paper also examines how political and communication issues can affect the outcome of permitting efforts, and recommends a strategy to improve the industry's ability to respond to political challenges and to communicate with the public. This strategy integrates technical and political issues, and implements programs to convince the public of the mining industry's technological achievements and its commitment to resource stewardship and environmental protection.

"Significant advances in mining and metallurgical operations have occurred over the last two decades, to define ore bodies via geological mapping, mineralogical analyses, geostatistical models and resource reserve modeling. Metallurgical process measurement, controls and modeling have also significantly progressed, with advanced instrumentation, control software, data capture systems and simulation tools. This progress together with development of the science of geometallurgy has allowed geologists, mineralogists, miners and metallurgists to start working together to define geometallurgical ore units and link these to mine planning and projected metallurgical performance. However, application of full geometallurgical programs into existing mine-processing operations or into new “greenfield” projects has been slow. This is mainly due to higher costs, limited dedicated technical resources and little or no corporate leadership. Additionally, life-of-mine cash flow models, the “dollars”, have been largely driven by ore tonnage rates, pay-metal grades and fixed pay-metal percentage recoveries, with few or no geometallurgical parameters included.Here defined, the “electrons” represent intrinsic ore characteristics embracing chemical composition, mineralogy, gangue components and their associated fundamental metallurgical processing phenomena. With its ever expanding treasure chest of measurement and modeling tools, geometallurgy paints a much clearer picture of the “electrons” for the geologist and metallurgist. But to fully understand and realize the real net value of ores over the life of a mine, a comprehensive link of “electrons to the dollars” is essential. Intrinsic characteristics of geometallurgical ore units are by definition linked to their metallurgical processing, but importantly need also to be related to operating costs, capital requirements and revenue.This paper discusses this important linkage under topics of ore geology and mineralogy, metallurgical processing, waste disposal, environmental issues, metal refining, project engineering and lifeof- mine models. Topics are illustrated by multi-metal references and by case examples from gold ore heap leaching and manganese ore smelting projects. 1"

FOR the same reason that water is not missed until the well runs dry, the roles of many industrial minerals in wartime are often overlooked. In contrast to the growing shortages of many metals, our supplies of most nonmetallic minerals are limited only by our machinery for taking them from the ground and by our processing facilities. With few exceptions, the demand for increased supplies has been met without fanfare or delay. Only Brazilian quartz crystals, certain kinds of mica, and, latterly, industrial diamonds are on the so-called strategic list, although asbestos, beryl, corundum, cryolite, fluorspar, crucible-grade graphite, ilmenite, iodine, kyanite, monazite, nitrates, rutile, and zircon have caused more concern among those responsible for procurement and are included in our preclusive buying programs. Such specialties are needed urgently, but they are far less important in the over-all picture than the more abundant minerals.

OVERWHELMING proof of the importance of oil in a modern national economy is afforded by the present European War. Treat¬ies and national boundaries have been cynically violated to secure greater supplies of the precious fuel. Petroleum substitutes have been desperately, and far from successfully, sought. The whole German military theory of the drang nach Osten, the drive to the East, is directed at cutting the British supply of oil and securing a supply for Germany. This is a war of machines, and the machines of war feed hungrily on oil. In view of this fact, it is surely comforting to know that we are living today in a nation which has surpassed all the rest of the world not merely in unearthing the raw supplies of petroleum which lie beneath its surface but also in every phase of the industry in mining, refining, processing, production, and distribution.

Active development of the exploration and further exploitation of deep-sea minerals requires special emphasis on the protection of the marine environment. The complexity of this subject lies in the fact that potential impact and effects of future mining activity are not completely known. One of the main sources of potential impact near the seafloor, as it expected, would be a generation of sediment plumes, their dispersion and redeposition of sediment. Meanwhile, their dimensions, rates of dispersion and redeposition are a big issue. Other plumes are expected in the surface layer as a result of discharges of processing waters and particles after sorting on board of mining vessel, and their features are also not clear. At the same time, understanding of these aspects would be crucial for definition of environment impact area, delineation and designation of different types of protected areas (Areas of Particular Environmental Interest, Impact and Preservation Reference Zones) and future assessment of environmental impacts. Attempts to address these issues demonstrated wide variations between the data of field experiments on the one hand and the results of analytical and numerical models on the other. According to in situ measurements, plumes were detected at a distance vary from one to less than 20 km [e.g., Burns et al., 1980; Sharma et al., 2001; Nautilus Minerals, 2008 etc.], whilst some models show results up to 100 km [Rolinski S. et al., 2001] and more. It seemed that results of in-situ experiments are preferable, but they were not many indeed. However, these data were used in different investigations rather widely, but their focus, as far as we know, was not on the matters related directly with plumes.

Use of crushed waste rock recovered by sink-float separation from normal ore production for backfill is an established procedure at Commco's Sulhvan mme, Kimberley, British Columbia. Need for a safe method of placement in voids which were difficult to reach by gravity methods led to a co-operative venture with Radmark Engineering Ltd. in the development of a workable pneumatic transportation system for rock material. This paper reviews work done to date in a current program, and includes comments on the nature of the fill so placed, options for cementing such fill, implications for other aspects of mining and references to other applications of the system by other organizations who exchanged experiences with the Sullivan mine staff during the five-year period reviewed.

With the ever increasing demand for Finer powders by industry there has been a continuing effort by air classifier manufacturers to improve and offer machinery capable of producing these fine powders. Common to these classifiers is the use of a multivaned rotor through which passes all of the air used to transport the particles to be classified. Rotor revolutions per minute and the amount of air passing through the rotor are the main variables in determining the particle sizes which will be able to pass through the spinning rotor. A simplified equation derived by setting the air drag force carrying a particle through the rotor equal to the centrifugal force due to the spinning rotor's action on the entering air and particle is: Diameter of Particle = [ ] Where K is a function of air viscosity, particle configuration, rotor and blade configuration; RPM is rotor revolutions per minute; M3/sec. is air quantity passing through the openings between the rotor blades.

The Minerals Industry makes heavy demands for and on its Material Handling equipment. It also gives progressive management the opportunity for considerable savings, ad consequently increased profits. In some cases, cost of Materials Handling amounts to 40°/o of the total cost of the ultimate product. Handling costs are hidden in overhead, indirect labor, excessive maintenance, productive workers performing handling tasks, and, a great many more. Even though Materials Handling is the oldest occupation of mankind, it is only within the past twenty years that it has emerged as a specialized field. While this industry has made full use of all types of mechanical and vibratory conveyors, pneumatic conveyors in their proper application can be a distinct asset. me use of pneumatic conveyors by this industry however is limited- to a certain extent by the particle size of your products through the various phases of manufacture, as well as their bulk density. However, with increasing knowledge of the fluidization of dry materials, their use is becoming more wide spread.

Pneumatic sinking of caissons has been established from mid-19th century. The technique of pneumatic sinking has been applied on many projects for underground construction up to depths over 20m below groundwater level since that time. Volker Staal en Funderingen, a known deep foundation contractor in the Netherlands, was awarded two contracts in 2015 for sinking in total 2 caissons in Hamburg (Germany) to large depths (over 30 m (100 ft) and two projects near Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The latter concerned two gate chambers for the world’s largest sea-lock, one of them was 55x81 m2 (180x266 ft) to a depth of 25.5 m (84 ft), which would mean a world record for pneumatic sinking! But with depths and dimensions like these, the deployment of personnel is the main limiting factor for production, despite all developments to date. It was decided to develop a remote controlled process, including the necessary equipment and monitoring systems. Monitoring not only the kinematics of the equipment in the working chamber and the production parameters related to the excavation but also of the structural behaviour of the sea-lock gate chambers was essential for approval of this innovative execution method. The lay-out and the sizes of the largest caisson the structural integrity was extremely critical for torsion and bending moments. A displacement controlled execution by the observational method was therefore required. In engineering a new approach for modelling the semi-continuous failure mechanisms of the soil was needed to understand the sensitivity of the excavation process and to define limit values for the execution. In the paper these structural and geotechnical issues will be explained together with the experiences during the execution.

INTRODUCTION Virtually every sector of society in our country feels the impact of tunnels, either through the transportation of water, commodities, or people. The economic implications are staggering. The Committee on Rapid Excavation (1) reported that during the near future, 1968-1975, underground excavation activity will comprise 946 miles of tunnels (subways: 85 miles; underground urban highways: 123 miles; intercity highway tunnels: 210 miles; water supply tunnels: 528 miles) and 5,119 million tons of crude ore; metals: 874 million tons; nonmetals: 899 million tons; and coal: 3,346 million tons. It is estimated that the cumulative demand for underground excavation in the decade 1970-1979 will be 13 billion dollars for construction-oriented demand and 16 billion dollars for mining-oriented demand. The respective figures for the decade 1980-1989 are estimated at 22 billion dollars and 18 billion dollars. Of the many advantages claimed for tunnels (2, 3, 4, 5) the environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important. Transportation tunnels particularly for rapid transit systems, offer reductions in noise pollution and air pollution while improving aesthetics and optimizing land use (fewer problems of right-of-way and disruption of utilities). Considerable interest has been shown recently in sub-surface construction and mining (6, 7, 8). Recognizing the future demands for tunnels has led to considerable study of methods to improve rates of tunnel advance per day, safety, and the overall economics. "(1) The radiological appearances of pneumokoniosis on the Kolar Gold Field is described in detail. The characteristic abnormality is the. presence of a diffuse, fine annular and punctate mottling. (2) The frequency of symptoms could not be determined with any degree of accuracy, but it is believed that symptoms are absent and there is no incapacity until profuse radiological mottling is present, i.e., after long exposure to dust. (3) There is an increased predisposition to tuberculosis, which, if it occurs, affects the prognosismost unfavourably.(4) Pathological examination shows that the radiological mottling is due to the presence inthe lung of numerous small dust-cdll aggregates (up to T5 mm. in dia.) deposited around the smaller bronchioles and blood-vessels.(5) The dust-cell aggregates are relatively acellular but when tuberculosis is superadded thereis an excessive cellular and fibrotic reaction.(6) The difficulties of defining the radiological and pathological appearances of early pneumokoniosisare discussed.(7) The incidence of pneumokoniosis in 7,653 workmen with 5 or more years’ undergroundservice was 43-75%, but it is suggested that in future the incidence will be appreciably lower.(8) The methods of- dust production and the chemistry of mine dust are described. It isshown that the free silica-content of air-borne mine -dust is relatively low.(9) The aetiology'of the pneumokoniotic lesion is discussed."

Increasingly, geologists use geostatistical methods to evaluate drilling programs. The complexity of the methods varies with the nature of the available sample information, the objective of the statistical analysis and the geologist's experience. Occasionally, estimating the average sample grade is all that is required. In other instances a semivariogram calculation may be considered. If sufficient data is available, the geologist may wish to estimate blocks or panels of complex shape, using the kriging method of evaluation. Historically, the use of geostatistics by geologists has been limited by a number of factors, most significant being the difficulty in accessing and using computer programs needed to complete the necessary studies. Geologists are often working in remote areas from which electronic communication is unreliable, if not impossible. Even when access to computer programs is technically possible, the costs incurred in accessing and using these programs are often considered prohibitive. In many instances using the programs requires an understanding of computer systems far beyond that which a field geologist can justifiably be interested in acquiring and maintaining.

Most brittle solids are relatively weak in tension and this weakness can be very significant in determining their performance in structures and excavations. Consequently, accurate knowledge of the tensile strength of brittle materials has long been recognized as important. In the past, measurements of the tensile strength of materials such as concrete, ceramics, and particularly rock have been hindered by problems encountered in fabricating test specimens and in accurately loading them. These difficulties have resulted in a scarcity of published tensile strength data. This can be readily seen in tabulations such as Wuerker's "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rocks.

The development of the mineral industry of Jamaica has been guided by an unwritten policy which has nevertheless been reflected in various pieces of mining legislation and by case-by-case approvals of incentive packages for non-bauxite minerals. An effort has now been made to bring together in one minerals policy document, all the policy elements that have guided our laws and actions thus far and to upgrade the final version to meet the challenges of the next century. In this regard, industrial minerals will be placed on a more equal footing with bauxite, especially in terms of investment incentives.

Neanderthal technology is a harsh and inaccurate way to describe modern underground construction and mining practices, but such an exaggeration helps to focus on a major problem or wasted opportunity of modern society. Why is it not safer to excavate in the underground? Why are the working conditions still so unfavorable? Why are urban freeways, shopping malls, warehouses, power plants, sewage disposal treatment plants, and similar facilities still constructed on the surface of the ground--because it is a better location? On the contrary, if underground technology made full use of existing knowledge, underground resources and space would be much more effectively used. And why is the technology so inadequate? Certainly, researchers and practitioners are aware of the shortcomings and are equally aware of problems that have to be overcome. One of the most important reasons has to do with the type of policy goals that society has set in the past. Policy makers may have agreed that improvements would be desirable but no serious commitments have been made--that is, there has been no major allocation of resources to advance these technologies. And yet, to bring about significant changes will require significant time and resources. The resources that are needed are far in excess of what industry can afford to invest, particularly since the pay-off may be far in the future. So the problem reverts to society in general. As long as society is willing to tolerate the present costs and safety requirements for recovering minerals and for constructing underground facilities, then the changes will be slow in coming. After an adventurous past-four changes of government in thirty years -the whole of Silesia and attached coal territories have become part of the Polish State. The coal resources of this area are the biggest among the European countries. Under a surface area of 5700 sq km are about 100 coal seams, with a total thickness of 150 meters. According to German estimates, there are some 150 billion metric tons of coal ranging in thickness up to 14 m within a depth of 1500 m. The seams are mostly level, free from faults, with good top and bottom; the coal is of excellent quality, hard and clean; and mining conditions are favorable. The mines are worked at considerable depth by means of vertical shafts and operate with cage and skip hoisting. Before the war, the mines were up to date, equipped with modern machines. Among the European countries, output per man shift was the highest ? 1.9 to 2.1 metric tons ? and cost of production was the lowest.
