O objetivo do trabalho consistiu em estudar os modos de transmissão de calor existentes em um conjunto mecânico composto por um rolo de extração e mancais de contato rolante em decorrência do movimento de um tubo laminado sobre o mesmo na planta da Vallourec Brasil. A motivação para o estudo surgiu na avaliação de como os fenômenos térmicos presentes resultariam na distribuição de temperatura através da superfície do conjunto e qual a sua relação com a disponibilidade desse equipamento. Para isso a análise desenvolvida foi baseada no emprego da dinâmica dos fluidos computacionais (CFD), associada a imposições subsidiárias durante a definição das condições de contorno do problema. Como resultado a distribuição de temperatura através da superfície do conjunto foi determinada, sobretudo na pista interna do rolamento e na região na qual se encontra o sistema de refrigeração. Desse modo conclui-se que embora o sistema de refrigeração dissipe uma grande quantidade de calor a sua eficiência não é satisfatória. Fato esse descrito pela presença de temperaturas superiores as necessárias para a ocorrência do fenômeno de ponto de gota.

No cenário econômico mundial atual, cada vez mais as indústrias têm voltado sua atenção para o reaproveitamento de materiais gerados como consequência das ações operacionais, tanto como forma de reduzir custos, como também no caráter de sustentabilidade do negócio. Em uma operação de refino primário em aciaria elétrica, onde o produto é o aço líquido, o antes considerado resido, mas agora denominado de coproduto, a escória, passa atuar diretamente no custo final do produto quando esta é processada, e passa a compor a carga fria usada no processo de elaboração do aço. Neste sentido, o estudo deste material se faz necessário para a compreensão de qual será o seu comportamento junto aos processos e quais vantagens e desvantagens da sua aplicação. Neste trabalho, foram feitas as caracterizações de sucatas provenientes de reaproveitamento de escórias produzidas em Forno Elétrico a Arco e em conversor LD, bem como seu impacto no refino primário, como parte integrante da carga fria no FEA.

O trabalho surgiu mediante a necessidade de reduzir o custo na compra de anéis de laminação em 50% do que é praticado atualmente. Os anéis de laminação utilizados atualmente no 1º passe de laminação do laminador de perfis leves são anéis fabricado de aço ferramenta D2 e tem um custo alto para serem fabricados. No processo de laminação de perfis leves utilizamos cassetes onde são alocados esses anéis e para realizar a laminação de cantoneiras faz-se necessário a montagem de 4 anéis bi-partidos no eixo superior e 2 anéis bi-partidos no eixo inferior totalizando 6 anéis por cassete, além de reservas que temos que garantir para a realização de trocas por desgaste por laminação. Para o processo de fabricação de barra chata utilizamos 2 anéis de mesa lisa 1 no eixo superior e outro no eixo inferior, além de reservas para possíveis trocas. Tendo em vista o alto número de anéis que devemos ter para nosso processo resolvemos desenvolver esses anéis a partir de cilindros sucatas de um dos laminadores de nossa unidade, de modo a reaproveita-los e com isso eliminar a compra dos anéis de aço ferramenta D2. Após o desenvolvimento realizamos o teste com os cilindros do laminador DEMAG da unidade de Barra Mansa e os anéis apresentaram performance muito semelhante ao dos que utilizamos atualmente. Com isso todos os cilindros no final de vida útil do laminador de Barra Mansa são nos enviados para passar pelo processo de usinagem serem reutilizados.

Loussavaara-KiirunavaaraAB?s (LKAB) iron ore mine, Kiirunavaara, is of magnetite type and associated with apatite, a calcium phosphate mineral. Rare earth elements (REE) have been found in connection with the apatite but also in other minerals. An apatite concentrate was produced by flotation, in order to investigate the possibilities to extract REE from the apatite by hydrometallurgical means. The content of rare earth elements calculated as oxides (REO) was 0.44% in the concentrate. Initially, leaching was done with large excess of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid to study the REE solubility with different acids. In sulfuric acid, the leaching recoveries of the different REE varied between 35% and 69%. The reasons for the relative low recoveries, were that the rare earth elements precipitated together with huge amounts of gypsum, that was formed during leaching. However, both hydrochloric- and nitric acid gave almost complete extraction of the REE into solution. Analysis of the small leaching residue obtained, revealed, that mainly the light REE remained in the residue indicating that a small part of the light REE were present in the concentrate, in some acid, insoluble mineral other than apatite. With the aim to separate the REE from the phosphoric acid, the solutions from hydrochloric- and nitric acid leaching were neutralized to a pH of approximately 2 with ammonia. During neutralization, REE were precipitated as phosphates with good recoveries and a concentrate of 10.5% REO suitable for further upgrading was obtained, while the remaining solution can be used for fertilizer production. In further solvent extraction studies, it was shown, that after re-dissolution the REE could be effectively extracted by Cyanex 923, thus allowing for purification from calcium and phosphate ions. The Kiruna area is an important mining province in northern Sweden, which is dominated by Fe- and Cu-Au deposits. Economically most important for the region, are the apatite iron ores with an annual production of c. 43 M ton of crude Fe-ore and a total production of more than 2000 M ton of ore the last 100 years. The apatite iron ores in the Kiruna area are dominated by either Magnetite or Haematite and contain varying amounts of apatite giving them a content of Fe and P, which varies between 30-70 % and 0.05-5 %, respectively. A typical geochemical feature of the ores is the strong enrichment of REE that is caused by a high content of REE in apatite and the occurrence of Allanite and Monazite containing 22.4 and 69.8 wt% REO, respectively. At Kiirunavaara, the content of REE in apatite varies between 0.07 to 1.57 wt% REO with a dominance for the light rare earths. The variation in REE-content of apatite depending on textural and paragenetic aspects is not known but apatite grains may display a strong LREE-depletion due to hydrothermal alteration. Monazite occurs as rod-shaped or tabular inclusions in apatite and is suggested, to have formed in response to hydrothermal alteration of apatite after the emplacement of the ore. Inclusions are mainly found in the central part of apatite grains occurring in veins and schliren, while they are rare in apatite occurring disseminated in the ore. Monazite also occurs as larger grains outside apatite and together with Allanite is found in texturally and paragenetically different settings within the ore. These occurrences of REE-minerals may largely be a product of LREE mobilized by alteration of apatite after the emplacement of the ore. However, REE-minerals including Allanite and Monazite might also have formed directly from late magmatic fluids. The most common REE containing mineral that is worked today is bastnäsite. It means that mineral processes are adapted to it and that the metallurgical separation techniques for winning of individual REE are adapted to bastnäsite concentrates. For all other deposit types, suitable mineral processing methods and separation technologies need to be adapted and/or developed. Preliminary mineralogical analyses indicate that slightly less than half of the REE in the tailings dumps at LKAB/Kiruna are associated to apatite. The rest is in the minerals monazite (maybe associated to apatite) and allanite. At least allanite is probably not floatable with reagents commonly used for apatite. Mass and element distributions for the tailings sand reveal that very little apatite is present above 300 µm, and that approx. 30 % is below 20 µm. REE does not follow P2O5 completely and are also present in coarser fractions. Flotation results show that the best condition for both apatite and REE winning is pH 9, high collector addition and low dosage of water glass. Under these conditions, the lab-scale flotation gives an apatite concentrate with at least 30 % P2O5 at 70 % recovery. REE follows apatite in the cleaner steps but only partly. Its recovery is approx. half compared with apatite. The reason for the low REE recovery is likely to be that REE to a large extent is trapped in non-winnable minerals, especially allanite. "Agnico Eagle LaRonde produces over 300,000 ounces of gold annually, along with silver, zinc and copper by-products. The LaRonde plant consists of a conventional SAG and Ball mill circuit, followed by flotation. Load management is imperative for maintaining stability in grind size and ensuring consistency of the flotation feed. In flotation, the mass pull profiles of the cells and reagent dosage rates need to be managed to maximize recovery, while maintaining product quality. This is achieved by controlling the air, level and reagent addition set-points across the circuit. However, disturbances such as feed size distribution, ore hardness and mineralogy make it challenging to maintain efficient control using traditional control techniques. LaRonde therefore worked to develop a progressive control strategy, targeting stability and optimization. This started with a year-long instrumentation upgrade campaign, focusing on optimizing the performance and reliability of plant-wide instrumentation. The process was then optimized, leveraging AwaRE advanced controllers running in closed loop with PARC modules embedded within the PLC. The installation of 8 PFC cameras in flotation changed the flotation operation from a level and air control based strategy, to one that controls mass pull. This new control philosophy has allowed the plant to effectively manage mill load, improving grind size and providing increased throughput with better flotation performance.INTRODUCTION Background Since 2015, Agnico Eagle LaRonde has been conducting an optimization campaign to maximise the performance of plant assets leveraging instrumentation and control. The grinding and copper flotation circuits were identified as the areas having the greatest opportunities and value proposition for advanced control. A tecnologia de cominuição de minérios através de Prensas de Rolos de Alta Pressão vem se destacando nos diversos segmentos da mineração, o que faz com que as usinas de pelotização de minério venham introduzindo Prensas de Rolos em seu processo produtivo. Apesar dos benefícios dessa mudança, observa-se pouco conhecimento da influência das variáveis intervenientes ao processo de prensagem e sua relação com o Ganho de Superfície Específica. Essa compreensão é fundamental para a maximização do desempenho de prensagem. Esse artigo utiliza Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA) para predição dos resultados no Ganho de Superfície Específica e quantifica a relevância de cada variável no processo de prensagem. Os valores preditos gerados pela RNA obtiveram ótima aproximação com os dados reais, o que indica que utilização de RNA possibilita a intervenção proativa no processo produtivo podendo resultar em uma melhoria de desempenho da prensa.

ENGINEERING COUNCIL has passed, not out, but upward! Therefore, its recent wake was conducted by itself as a joyful occasion somewhat in advance of its official demise. Council held its last meeting in Washington, Dec. 16, 1920. Business was transacted with dignified gravity in the forenoon. During the afternoon calls were made upon the chiefs of technical bureaus of the Government: the Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army; Chief of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department; Director of U. S. Reclamation Service; Director of U. S. Geological Survey; Director of Bureau of Mines. The Council pronounced them, each and all, able men and true. But what of the evening? Well, there was a dinner at the Washington Hotel. Twenty-six men gathered around a flower-strewn table-not a casket. As guests, there graced the festive board the hosts of the afternoon calls, and a number of members of the new American Engineering Council. The body about to be apotheosized-otherwise known as Engineering Council-was both jocular and reminiscent. Rewards were bestowed and appreciations expressed. To the man who had for three long years borne the burden of chairmanship and whose financial recklessness made possible the Washington office and the movement for a National Public Works Department, the following "note," duly engrossed and signed, was given, accompanied by "The Song of the Council Crew."

"This paper presents an apparatus and procedures to implement a methodology for controlling ambient air quality in a confined working environment, such as an underground mine, an underground storage area, or a tunnel. The air quality control methodology is directed at limiting the quantities of exhaust pollutants emitted by diesel-powered vehicles into the confined space by identifying vehicles that are excessive polluters. The methodology is based on tailpipe and ambient air measurements in the confined space, and the ambient air threshold limit values (TLVs) for the various diesel exhaust pollutants. The methodology consists of two computational methods; a deterioration criteria computational method to identify excessive polluting vehicles, and an engine performance computational method to determine engine performance and to provide information needed to diagnose engine faults. The methodology is designed for implementation in conjunction with a preventive maintenance program.The first part of the paper describes the mine air and tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus and techniques used to obtain data. This is followed by sections discussing the deterioration criteria and the engine performance computational methods. A section discussing some common engine emissions-related faults is also presented lastly, a proposed procedure to implement the methodology including a possible hierarchical structure for mine personnel involved to implement the procedures is presented.INTRODUCTIONDiesel-powered mining vehicles are gaining Popularity in underground coal mines and are almost universally used in underground non-coal mines due to their mobility, flexibility, and higher productivity. However, noxious gases and particulate matter in diesel engine exhaust are a concern because of the potential for being harmful to the health of miners. Diesel exhaust pollutant concentrations out the tailpipe of a mine vehicle change with time due to engine wear, inadequate maintenance, improper adjustments and other factors. This deterioration in pollutant concentrations, if not properly controlled, may adversely affect the air quality in an underground mine. To provide assurance that a clean and healthful work environment are maintained, a program is needed to identify and repair diesel engines that contribute to poor air quality. Also, earlier detection of deteriorated engines will make preventive maintenance possible, thereby eliminating further deterioration and possibly complete breakdown. Preventive maintenance also increases engine life and equipment availability in production which in turn will result in decreased operating costs."

THE growing importance of metallography has caused a corresponding interest in the improvement of apparatus for preparing specimens of metals and alloys for microscopic examination. The purpose of this paper is to describe an electric heating-furnace, a grinding-and-polishing machine, and a device for mounting specimens, which are used in the metallographical work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These three pieces of apparatus were designed and made in the laboratory of the Institute, and. each possesses some original features which may be of interest. ELECTRIC HEATING-FURNACE., The accurate control of heat necessary for metallographic work is best obtained by the electric-resistance furnace. Unfortunately, however, even the platinum-wound furnaces deteriorate with use and ultimately burn out, while the cheaper resistance-materials are often short-lived. Since the resistance-coil must be replaced from time to time, it is of advantage to be able to make this change with as little trouble as possible, and this is an important feature in the furnace shown in Fig. 1. "ObjectiveDevelop a portable emissions measurement apparatus to sample and measure tailpipe concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (COJ, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NOJ under steady-state engine load and speed conditions during a 1-minute test.BackgroundThe U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has a comprehensive research program to develop ways to reduce exposure of miners to diesel exhaust pollutants. Engine maintenance has been shown to have important effects on such exposure.Accurate measurements of tailpipe emissions are becoming an essential part of a good maintenance program for underground mines that use diesel-powered vehicles. Past studies of particulates in U.S. underground coal mines have shown that DPM alone may be present at concentrations greater than 1 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3), half the 2-mg/m3 limit for respirable coal mine dust. A poorly tuned (smoking) diesel engine may be the sole cause for respirable dust concentrations exceeding the limit. Although there is currently no standard specifically for DPM in U.S. mines, regulatory steps are underway, and significant reductions of DPM levels in both coal and metal mines will most likely be required.Tailpipe emission measurements can provide diagnostic information to identify engine malfunctions such as clogged air cleaners, faulty injectors, or incorrect injection timing. In some cases, mine vehicle tailpipe DPM concentrations have been reduced up to 50 percent by engine maintenance and adjustments.An accurate measuring instrument would also be useful for determining the effects of exhaust control devices on tailpipe emissions. Little information is currently available about the overall effectiveness of exhaust controls after long-term use. Raw exhaust concentrations with and without the control device can be measured in underground mines, and from these data a control efficiency can be calculated. Knowledge of the effectiveness of exhaust control devices over time is needed to make intelligent decisions on bow to use and maintain these devices, and when to replace them."

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. Mr. Bockosh is an electrical engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Mines In Pittsburgh, and has devoted the last two years to research on underground illumination. He formerly was a mine maintenance foreman and worked two years underground. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he is now working toward his masters degree in mining. When Congress first legislated light in American coal mines, it was a little like mandating a walk on the moon before the first satellite had been put in orbit. It was never a question, of course, of whether it could be done. But no one knew quite how. It's one thing to string a few light bulbs, and quite something else to provide uniform, sufficient, safe and reliable illumination, with fixtures that will hold up under some of the toughest conditions in the world - in the life-and-death circumstances of a craggy, black cavern filled with dangerous, moving machinery. In fact, in 1969 when Congress originally mandated illumination standards for the work places of underground coal mines, no one even knew just how much light was needed. That question was answered within a year by the National Bureau of Standards. In a study commissioned by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Bureau of Standards determined that underground mine should be illuminated with a light intensity of 0.06 foot-lamberts, a measurement of light reflected from surfaces in the lighted area-as opposed to foot-candles, a measurement of light from the source of illumination-in order for miners to adequately see what they are doing. That study was followed by more detailed research done at the Bureau of Mines' direction by the Research and Development Department of the Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, Ind. This work evaluated the specific lighting needs of miners engaged In more than 100 different job tasks in all three types of coal mining- conventional, continuous and longwall. The Naval Depot report brought forth nearly 300 pages of detailed lighting data and concluded that proper illumination of mine work areas would serve more than just the cause of mine safety.

For convenience in discussion we may, therefore, divide his writings on the broad lines of (1) works on mining, geology, mineralogy, and allied subjects; (2) works on other subjects, medical, religious, critical, political, and historical. In respect especially to the first division, and partially with regard to the others, we find three principal cases : (a) Works which can be authenticated in European libraries today ; (b) references to editions of these in bibliographies, catalogues, etc., which we have been unable to authenticate ; and (c) references to works either unpublished or lost. Those of most importance are : Aristotle (384-322 B.c.), Theophrastus (371-288 B.c.), Diodorus Siculus (1st Century B.c.), Strabo (64 B.c.-25 A.D.), and Dioscorides (1st Century A.D.). Aristotle, apart from occasional mineralogical or metallurgical references in De Mirabilibus, is mostly of interest as the author of the Peripatetic theory of the elements and the relation of these to the origin of stones and metals. Agricola was, to a considerable measure, a follower of this school, and their views colour much of his writings. We, however, discuss elsewhere1 at what point he departed from them. Especially in De Ortu ct Causis does he quote largely from Aristotle's Meteorologica. Physica, and De Coelo on these subjects. There is a spurious work on stones attributed to Aristotle of some interest to mineralogists. It was probably the work of some Arab early in the Middle Ages.[ ]
