316 L Stainless Steel samples were solidified directionally under conditions which produced the columnar to equiaxed transition. The position of the transition was located in each sample and the distance from the bottom of the ingot was measured. During solidification the distribution of temperatures were measured by means of thermocouples located strategically. From the measured temperatures the following parameters were derived; the local temperature gradient, the cooling rate and the velocities of the liquid and solidus fronts. Comparing the location of the transition and the values of these parameters it was found that the temperature gradient reaches negative values of as low as -13.44 "C/cm, and velocities of the fronts of around 0.1 cm/s. Also, a supercooling of 5.81°C were measured which was associated with the supercooling for the nucleation and growth of the equiaxed grains ahead of the columnar front. In addition the primary and secondary dendritic spacing was measured in both regions. The spacing was compared with the predictions from available models. The results are presented and discussed in the frame of the results obtained for other alloys

"This paper, an update to the 2003 paper titled "Knowledge, Technology and Profit" (Twigge-Molecey, 2003) analyzes 45 "problem projects" from the mining and metals industry over the last eleven years representing $133 billion in CAPEX. The projects have been designated as "problem projects" as they did not meet their owner’s initial expectations for project performance as defined in the paper. This paper explores some of the challenges that were present, through interviews with the knowledgeable individuals that were familiar with the projects and investigations using publically available information. The aim of the exercise was to identify the key challenges faced by the projects, and the contributing factors that led to the project failures so that the lessons can be applied to future projects.The project challenges have been categorized into four themes, technical, organizational, environmental & social and missing "homework" prior to board approval. Of noteworthy interest is that environmental permitting aspects have risen to become a significant and notable contributor to problem projects in 11 years from 2003 to 2014. It is further observed that many projects have been challenged by increasing size and complexity and with execution in more remote locations since the previous paper.It is a reality that every project will face challenges. Some projects are simply more challenging than others, and success or failure of the project is often determined by whether the project team is fully prepared to respond to the challenges. This in turn is largely dependent on whether the project "homework" was adequately completed and considered for all aspects of the project."

The dynamic properties of the KYF-320 flotation machine which is one of the biggest flotation machines in the world were tested and then verified by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Aeration rate testing results suggest that he effect of circulation holes on the fluid state in the flotation cell becomes gradually smaller when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The dispersion degree of air increases with the increasing impeller speed and decreases with the increasing aeration rate, and it increases slightly when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The air holdup increases and then decreases with the increasing impeller speeds and aeration rates, and a maximum value of air holdup is shown at impeller speed of 107 r/min with a value of 12.28%. CFD simulation results are in good agreement with these testing results. Industrial-scale test was carried out using this 320 m3 flotation machine for the flotation of Cu ores. The results show that Cu content increases from 0.06% of crude ore to 1.26% of concentrate, and the S content increases from 0.39% of crude ore to 24.83% of concentrate. Moreover, using this flotation machine 5.88% of power is saved compared to other type of large flotation machine.

Introdução: A automatização dos procedimentos de desligamento, religamento e de extração remota de disjuntores de alta tensão consiste em um sistema que utiliza as tecnologias disponíveis na atualidade para trabalhar em prol da saúde e segurança dos trabalhadores. O conhecimento e utilização de Controlador Lógico Programável - CLP, Interfaces Homem Máquina - IHM foram considerados fundamentais para este projeto. Estes recursos alinhados às normas técnicas vigentes, e a adoção de dispositivos de proteções entre outros, possibilitou a elaboração deste projeto. Objetivo: Aumentar a segurança do eletricista ao realizar manobras com disjuntores de alta tensão. Método: Desenvolvido um sistema automatizado para desligamento, religamento, extração e inserção de disjuntores de alta tensão remotamente, utilizando um motor elétrico no painel do disjuntor, substituindo o que antes era feito por um profissional habilitado na área elétrica. Resultado: A implantação deste sistema permite realizar os procedimentos no disjuntor em local seguro, chamado zona livre, distante do raio de ação de qualquer energia proveniente de um arco elétrico. Conclusão: O projeto permitiu a remoção do risco para o eletricista durante a operação do disjuntor, deixando-o livre de qualquer possível contato com a energia proveniente de uma falha no disjuntor.

The sixth survey on the mining industry by Comann Associates provided data for entry-level and midlevel engineers as well as executive officers. Average 1989 compensation - base salary and anticipated bonus - for chief mining executive officers or chief mining operating officers: $237,943. This is an increase of 20% over the results of the last survey, on 1985 compensation. The latest survey also showed that bonuses for chief mining executive officers averaged 33% of base salary. Average 1989 compensation for chief executive or chief operating officers at mining operations with under $50 million in gross sales, $148,638; at mining operation with more than $50 million in gross sales, $275,141. The survey showed that these officers averaged 14 years employment with their present company, had five years in their present position, and had an average age of 54.

Environmental improvement efforts are focusing with increasing intensity on pollutants resulting from combustion. The high cost of removing these pollutants at the power station is well documented. Physical coal cleaning has always been and should remain the most economic method of reducing sulfur oxide emission from coal combustion. It is critical in the selection of preparation plant circuitry to consider capital and operating costs, as well as the level of sulfur reduction. This paper describes the technical criteria which must be used for efficient process selection and summarizes the cleaning systems available or in development.

The increasing transportation of solids by pipeline, in South Africa and internationally, replacing the conventional transportation methods of rail, road, and conveyors, has resulted in much research into this area of solids transportation. Pipeline wear continues to be an area of specific concern, since it constitutes a major cost during the life of a pipeline installation. Wear data from an accelerated wear test and actual pipeline tests are presented. Trends in the performance of the pipeline materials tested are discussed, and possible solutions to the problem of pipeline wear are presented.

To develop and design a bit that will rapidly drill smooth and precise instrumentation holes in soft rock. Approach Use a one-piece bit made by combining a drag bit and a diamond bit. Because a smooth-walled borehole with a precise diameter is needed for borehole pressure cells (BPC) and other borehole instruments, a diamond bit is usually used. However, diamond bit drilling is slow, and the bit will tend to bind when squeezing ground is encountered. On the other hand, the drag bit will cut faster, but the walls of the drill hole will be rough and the diameter will not be as precise. The combination will provide a bit which penetrates as rapidly as a drag bit, but retains the smooth-wall and precise borehole diameter of a diamond bit. How It Works A three-foot-length of EW-size drill rod is centered in a diamond bit by welding it to three equally-positioned spacers at each end of the bit. A drag bit is attached to the EW rod with a standard EW-to-drag bit adapter as shown in the diagram. Three equally-spaced diamond inserts are set to the desired hole size and welded to the diamond bit barrel behind the crown. These inserts increase the smoothness and precision of the hole by cut-ting away any hole closure. Three equally-spaced shims are set approximately 0.020-inch under the overall insert diameter size and welded to the rear of the diamond bit barrel. The combination bit should be used on a diamond drill with either water, mist or air as the coolant.

BY taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification-namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification-a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from 3/8 to 1/2 in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. The screen oversize was rejected as a tailing. Classification was done in a hindered-settling teeter column and screening was done by hand, using the standard [v2]series. Copper recovery via Solvent Extraction (SX) process is a well-known technique, which is practiced commercially for approximately 40 years. The main advantages of the SX process are: an absence of using high temperatures (not more than 50oC), complete recycling of barren solutions, very high selectivity at removal and purification of metals, metal conversion to a form, suitable for easy subsequent recovery. Despite the wide acceptance of Solvent Extraction, it does have some shortcomings, namely SX employs large quantities of volatile organic substances. This leads to huge plant ?footprint? of SX circuits. The SX is very sensitive to low temperatures and quantity of total suspended solids in feed solutions and this causes bad phase disengagement times and therefore poor process performance. And most important ? low grade solutions (with copper concentrations below 1 gram per litre) are very unattractive for treatment via Solvent Extraction process, because capital costs for SX plants are not a direct function of copper tenor in the feed. The combined process with Ion Exchange (IX) and Solvent Extraction ? further called IX/SX by IONTECH Engineering was developed. This combination eliminates SX negative characteristics shown above. The key findings of the IX/SX process are; (1) recovery of copper from pregnant leach solutions with metal concentrations, varying on a broad range; (2) can be operate effectively with very low-graded copper pregnant leach solutions; (3) the construction of large ponds for pre-filtration of the pregnant leach solutions is not necessary; (4) working with turbid solutions and solutions containing large quantities of suspended solids; (5) winter operation without troubles; (6) strongly reduces organic losses; (7) technological approach lead to plant sizes reducing. This paper reviews the main stages of the combined IX/SX process, the applications for metal recovery and introduces projects where the process is applied. Key findings of the process are also presented. A comprehensive technical comparison between processes has been carried out. This paper also evaluates the advantages of using combined IX/SX technology as a purification and separation step in copper production process, with the aim of further increasing the overall copper recovery and to ensure that a suitable copper concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. The implementation of a Ion Exchange (IX) process in the classic Solvent Extraction-Electrowinning process(SX/EW) is found to be beneficial for processing of pregnant leach solutions both from spent and new copper heaps and dumps, acid mine drainage and other industrial streams without any preconditioning as well as in terms of achieving improved recoveries and copper cathode quality.

A combination of novel and æclassicÆ methods, namely electric pulse disaggregation (EPD), hydroseparation (HS), preparation of monolayer polished sections, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) was employed to study ores from platinum pipes (Bushveld Complex, South Africa), pristine PGE mineralisation of the Main Sulfide Zone (Great Dyke, Zimbabwe), as well as ancient and modern gold/PGM placer deposits. It is shown here that the EPD technique liberates mineral grains of interest without any visible destruction allowing the study and analysis of individual rock-forming and ore minerals, in our case especially platinum-group minerals. The HS method is an effective tool in concentrating heavy minerals by factors up to 10 000 fold. As near-total recovery of grains >10 ¦m is achieved, the nugget effect can be overcome also in case of limited availability of samples (drill core, museum specimens). The MLA technique is a fast tool to detect and characterise mineral phases in ores and ore processing products. Many mineralogical parameters of individual grains and mineral assemblages can be deducted and documented. The results show that the techniques employed, either on their own or in combination, provide a wide range of additional information especially on platinum ores which is beneficial to both the researcher and the metallurgist.

Several logging methods are presently available to the oil industry for the evaluation of formation porosity: the Sonic and Neutron logs are already widely used, the Gamma-Ganmia log is being progressively introduced. The readings of these instruments are primarily a function of the rack-porosity, hence the general term of "porosity tools". Apart from porosity, however, other variables such as type of fluid in the pores, nature of matrix and degree of shaliness have an important influence.The response of each device is a different function of such parameters: therefore, a cci bination of porosity tools can lead to information on these variables in addition to the evaluation of effective porosity.For example, the presence of gas; rather than water or oil, in a formation which is not deeply invaded, will tend to give Neutron derived porosity values which are too 'low; on the other hand, the Sonic derived porosity: value will be too high in such- a case. For the same porosity, the Sonic gives a longer transit time in sandstone than limestone, whereas in the low porosity range, the Neutron will read more counts per second in a sandstone than in a limestone of the same porosity. The presence of shale also affects the readings of the various porosity tools in different ways so that the combination of two or more methods may lead, in some cases; to an evaluation of both the-effective porosity and the shale, content.In conclusion, it may be said that the various porosity tools pre-sently available, are, to a large extent, complementary, and that in many problems the use of two porosity tools, instead of one, is very likely to bring valuable additional information.

WHEN Charles Martin Hall invented the electrolytic process for the production of aluminum, one basic requirement was a supply of pure alumina. Now, more than 50 years later, the same requirement still holds, and there are no technical straws in the wind to indicate that this situation is likely to change. Long ago, Aluminum Company of America took a number of steps to see that this country should not face shortages of alumina and aluminum in time of emergency. As one step to this end, the Company developed and used a supply of bauxite in South America in order to conserve dwindling Arkansas reserves. Another, and more a program than a step, was to investigate every type of process that might bear the possibility of utilizing the low-grade ores of aluminum that are more plentiful than bauxite. It is a long story, but the investigation included electric-furnace processes, acid extraction processes and alkaline extraction processes, with or without preliminary furnace and sinter treatments. Some of the processes developed were operated in commercial production. This work has been continuous since the first World War. The turn of the wheel came sooner than was expected when, in 1942, bauxite shipments through the Caribbean became uncertain and hazardous through the operation of submarines. The tremendous requirements of aluminum for the war effort were consuming high-grade bauxite at an alarming rate and a national search for substitutes began. High-grade bauxites, for technical and economic reasons, have been defined as those containing about 7 per cent or less of silica. While bauxite of this grade was limited in amount in the United States, there was in sight a substantially greater volume of low-grade, high-silica bauxite not amenable to economic treatment by the Bayer process, but richer in alumina than the clays or other available low-grade ores. It was at this point, and after several years of intensive research on this particular phase of the problem, that Aluminum Research Laboratories brought to completion the invention of one of its research staff, which made practical the utilization of large reserves of low-grade bauxite in America. BAYER PROCESS The Bayer process has been almost universally used for the 'production of alumina from bauxite. This process, in outline, comprises the digestion of finely ground bauxite in a solution of caustic soda (NaOH) under pressure and at an elevated temperature. Alumina in the bauxite goes into solution as sodium aluminate and the impurities-oxides of iron, titanium and silicon-remain undissolved. The undissolved residue, known as "red mud," from its color, is separated and run to waste. Aluminum hydrate (A1202.3H20) is precipitated from the solution of sodium aluminate, and the liquor containing the caustic soda and some alumina is returned to the process for digesting more bauxite. A two-step approach has been developed for surface mine short term planning by the authors. The first step is mid term control and planning by the use of Goal Programming. This step gives optimal results for mid term planning (i. e. yearly or quarterly mine plan) as well as a macro control for short term planning (i. e. monthly or weekly plan.) The second step of the approach deals with short term production scheduling by the application of CAD technique and Systems Simulation. An interactive color character graphic design system has been developed with a software package. The menu-driven and module- structured package provides sufficient functions for surface mine short term planning and makes the model very flexible and user-friendly. This model has been applied to a large surface coal mine for short term planning optimization. Satisfactory results have been obtained. It is concluded that for complicated mining conditions this two-step combined approach gives an optimal control of mid term planning, makes the short term planning easier to avoid blindness; it has been proven that the Goal Programming is a powerful tool for solving multi-objective decision-making problems; guided by GP mid term planning, the CAD technique and simulation software package for short term planning are able to be concentrated on their practicality and flexibility.

A pyritic ore containing zinc, lead and copper as? the relevant primary sulfide minerals, .as well as gold and silver finely disseminated in the sulfide matrix, was? leached in percolation columns. Each column contained 30 kg of ore crushed to minus 10 mm. Firstly, zinc and copper were efficiently leached by means of chemolithothrophic bacteria? in acidic sulfate bearing medium. Zinc was leached more rapidly than copper but the final extractions of these metals were similar (about 75% in 300 days). A part of the galena was oxidized to the. insoluble lead sulfate during the leaching. The pyr:ite was, however, relatively slightly attacked. The ore was then leached by means of FeC11 - HCl solutions both in the presence and in the absence of bacteria to solubilize the lead. The chemolithotrophic bacteria grew in media containing both chloride and sulfat~ ions and maintained a high ferric to ferrous ion ratio in the percoiating solutions. The chemical leaching was, however, more efficient since ft was possible to carry it out at higher chloride ion concentrations. About 10% of the lead was leached in this way in 90 days. Finally, the ore was leached by thiourea in the presence of a gold-oxidant (oxone) to extract the gold and silver. Over 60% of the gold and over 55% of the silver were extracted from the ore in 150 days, while. the extractions of these precious metals from an untreated ore sample were lower than 25%.

AT the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rejections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blast furnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. This study aims to investigate the effects of operational variables on concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency, and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. For this purpose, the effects of the pulp solids content, collector and frother dosage, and preparation and concentrate collection time were studied using a Taguchi experimental design. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the concentrate collection time and pulp density were the most influential parameters on concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, concentrate collection time, collector dosage, and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. Also, the separation efficiency was mostly influenced by the concentrate collection time. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the second-order rectangular distribution model perfectly matched the experimental flotation data. The highest kinetic constant of 0.0756 s−1 was obtained from the test, which was performed with 35% solids content and 40 and 20 g/t collector and frother, respectively. The highest predicted copper recovery of 99.57% was obtained from the test at 30% solids content, and the collector and frother dosages of 40 and 15 g/t, respectively
