Trackless battery powered haulage vehicles have been in operation in British coal mines principally for longwall face transfer and personnel transportation. Changes within the industry have resulted in the introduction of room and pillar coal mining methods and the introduction of increasingly heavier longwall roof supports This has resulted in the introduction of: • Battery powered coal haulage machines, which, without the need for trailing cables, increase productivity within room and pillar mining. • Battery powered longwall shield haulers which are capable of carry ing the heaviest shield supports currently being utilised within the British coal mining industry. The conventional machines have been adapted from an American design to meet the requirem ents of European legalisation. This has seen the- emphasis being placed upon the supplier with the European M achinery Directive being introduced, necessitating the assigning of a 'C E ' m ark to each vehicle. Battery vehicle technology has advanced to meet the demands of the ever changing market and will no doubt he further adapted to meet the requirement of the British coal mining industry.

This paper presents an overview of -- the carbon-in-pulp process for gold and silver recovery as seen in the early 1980's. Traced back to its origins in the mid-nineteenth century the process development through the present state-of-the art is described. The process technology and equipment design are described in detail for the carbon-in-pulp process. A typical process flowsheet is given with a description of appropriate design criteria. Technical advantages and disadvantages as compared to the traditional countercurrent decantation process are discussed including some illustrative comparisons of capital and operating costs. A summary of currently operating carbon-in- pulp plants throughout the world is given with an insight into future developments in this industry.

THE importance of concentration of iron ores too low in grade to be smelted direct is shown by Table I, showing 1940 ship- [ ] ments from the Lake Superior district. Canadian ores are omitted. [ ] Only in Minnesota is concentrating, other than crushing and screening, practiced at present. Tonnage produced by various methods of concentration is shown in Table 2. The curves in Fig. I show the gradual increase in tonnage of concentrated ores shipped, compared with total shipments from Minnesota. Most of the concentration work is performed on the Mesabi Range. This range is about 100 miles long, and not over 3 miles wide from the line at which the formation tapers out to a feather edge on the north to the place on the south at which, some 600 ft. thick, it is overlain with slates. CLASSES OF ORE The Mesabi Range contains three classes of iron ore. First is the unaltered taconite, or banded iron-bearing chert. It is estimated that there are some 60 billion tons of this material, which contains, roughly, 25 to 30 per cent iron. This material is virtually untouched, since no commercially successful method has yet been found for concentrating it to a grade suitable for the blast furnace. Intensive experimental work is in progress, and the problem is gradually being solved. In 1922 the Mesabi Iron Co. spent several million dollars erecting a large-scale pilot plant for concentrating and sintering the magnetic taconites on the east end of the range. An important tonnage of high-grade sinter was shipped to lower lake furnaces, proving that the taconite can be concentrated to a satisfactory grade. T e mechanization of industry to reduce labor costs and to improve product quality is affecting he scale industry as it has affected many other industries. With increased emphasis on higher production rates many operators are experiencing difficulty in overcoming production problems where weight is a factor. Unfortunately, the scale industry has not shown the development over the last twenty-five years that other instrument industries have. For centuries the balance scale has been the standard and the workhorse of most weighing operations. In recent years considerable effort has been applied to designs to make balance scales more acceptable to industries employing automatic or semi-automatic processes. For the most part the designers have not attempted to replace the basic scale but toautomate functions of material handling and human judgement. Modern dump scales, for example, will accept material from a conveyor until a preset amount of material is on the scale, At this time the scale turns off the conveyor, dumps the load of material and repeats the operation with any desired timing. These improvements have helped industry. Even the scale observer has been replaced with devices which observe the scale reading and operate on weighed objects according to their weights. In spite of' the application of automation to the material handling, the balance scale has not been completely satisfactory. One reason for this is fairly evident when one considers the construction of the scales. Inherently, they are slow devices because of the inertia of the beams. The beam scale, primarily a static measuring device, is at the best limited to slow dynamic measurements.

IT IS the purpose of this paper to show how the design of the larger slope hoists in use in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation has tended to evolve ta suit the particular conditions of operation. These hoists are all used for hauling coal in trains or trips of pit tubs up the mine slopes, which usually follow the dip of the seam . As the mine is developed to the dip and the slope grows in length, the length of the rope and the size of the hoist required to handle it rends to become extremely cumbersome. It has been found that the best economic conditions of hoisting are obtained when the length of the slope is limited to about seven or eight thousand feet. Beyond this length it is necessary to offset to one side of the line of slope and start a second or auxiliary slope, which will be served by its own hoist installed underground. With this hoisting distance as a basis, we find that we can economically hoist the outputs required, usually about 1,500 tans per eight hours per slope, by hoisting the coal in trips of about twenty boxes. This, on the grades obtaining, will require a rope of about l 1/4in. diameter, running at a speed of 1,200 ta 1,800 feet per minute, and requiring from 1,200 to 1,800 h.p. at the hoist shaft. The tendency is for the rope speeds of the surface hoists to be a little higher than the underground hoists which relay to them, so that the surface hoist has a small margin of time in hand. The oldest surface hoists were steam-driven, but, with few exceptions, these have given place to electric hoists. With the exception of one hoist, which was altered in design, the steam hoists have not had the opportunity of evolving in the same way as the electric hoists, and will not be mentioned any further.

MR. M. W. Boom: I would like to congratulate Mr. Russell on his fine paper. One very good point which has always appealed to me is the smooth working of a steam hoist as compared with electrical. He does not mention the steam hoist at Springhill which has been working there for a good many years. MR. S. R. NEWTON: I have read with a great deal of interest the paper presented by Mr. Russell on the development of haulage engines in the mines of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. He is to be congratulated on having produced a comprehensive article showing, step by step, the various improvements that have been made over the years in the design of such engines. I am quite in accord with Mr. Russell's statement that the positive tooth clutch can have too many teeth, and also that the method of driving a sliding clutch hub of any design should be by means of a hexagon or octagon on the shaft. Where the clutch hub does not of necessity slide on the shaft it can be pressed on and keyed to the shaft in the normal manner. With regard to the 'Cramp' internal-expanding jaw-type clutch, while it is true there are more moving parts than with the clutch consisting of a ring with internal cut teeth and a driver having a fewer number of teeth as .described by Mr. Russell; there are compensating advantages to the internal expanding jaw-type of clutch. The V shaped profile of the teeth permits of engagement of the clutch with very much less 'jockeying' of the drum. This is particularly the case in vertical-lift mine hoists, where it may be necessary to engage and disengage the clutching mechanism at frequent intervals.

The changes in layout and design over 48 years, from the first crushing and shiploading plant installed at Whyalla in 1915, up to the present plant being built at Koolan Island, Yampi Sound may be summarized as follows.1. Smaller motors and lower power consumption have resulted froma. oil lubrication, where practicable, in place of grease,b. a high pressure "oil-lift" device to reduce starting torque in crushers with white metal bearings, andc. roller bearings in place of white metal.2. Short centre drives with pivot-based motors permit controlled loads on bearings and a reduction in size of crusher houses and motor rooms.3. Dust proofing and pressurising of crusher houses and motor rooms reduces working temperatures and improves cleanliness.4. Variable speed pan feeders give improved plant control, with the use of one man only, and remove the need for large surge bins between crushing stages.5. The use of diesel quarry trucks to dump ore through a "drive over"tip results in faster truck cycles.6. Elevated cylindrical silos with air operated chutes, replace long horizontal storage bins with multiple manually operated side discharge chutes for loading rail cars, and give faster and more accurate truck loading. The silos are charged by belt conveyors with automatic distributors.7. Increased shipping bin capacity (40,000 tons at Whyalla and 6O,OOO tons being built at Koolan Island) caters for the bigger vessels now in use and envisaged for the future. Automatic travelling distributors deliver ore to the bins in layers to ensure, maximum mixing and a more uniform grade for blast furnaces.INTRODUCTIONThe Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd has six major crushing plants in Australia at its principal sources of raw material. These are at Iron Knob bench G, Iron Knob scree ore plant, Iron Baron, and Cockatoo Island, all of which are ironstone operations. The other two plants are at Rapid Bay, a limestone quarry, and at Ardrossan, which is the Company's only source of dolomite.

Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.

The sequential flotation of copper, lead, and zinc in that order is practised at the Broken Hill Concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited. The minerals of economic importance are chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with associated silver. The targets for recovery and grade in the lead and zinc circuits were reached quite readily after start-up, but the copper circuit failed to meet the performance requirements with respect to both recovery' and grade. The original circuit for copper is described, together with the subsequent investigations and modifications that were required to produce acceptable metallurgical results. Circuits for semi-bulk and bulk flotation were tried, and the effect of the oxidation state of the pulp was investigated extensively and found to be all important. Tests were conducted on the depression of lead in the cleaning circuit by the use of sodium dichromate, and on heating with the addition of sulphurous acid. The latter technique was ultimately the more successful. The proportion of fresh to recycle water entering the circuit was shown to be important. The original reagent regime was altered and augmented. A more recent problem has been the contamination of the ore with cemented backfill. The changes that this new condition necessitated are described. Success has been measured by a continuous improvement in the economics of the copper recovery.

"The processing of nickel laterites has been a topic of major interest at CSIRO for almost twenty years. During this period CSIRO has collaborated with other researchers and industry in developing a better understanding of existing processes and been actively involved in testing/developing new beneficiation and process options for these ores. The current paper summarises the results of selected studies and highlights improvements that have been achieved. Key topics to be discussed include enhancements in the mineralogical characterisation, beneficiation approaches, improvements in the understanding and application of leaching technologies, the development of synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) for the recovery of nickel/cobalt from laterite leach liquors and the collaborative development of the Direct Nickel process. Future opportunities and key research questions will be briefly examined.INTRODUCTION Nickel laterite ores comprise a significant resource in Australia and according to United States Geological Survey data nearly a quarter of world reserves are located there (USGS, 2016). More specifically, around 95% of Australian nickel resources (laterite and sulfide) are located in Western Australia (Australian Government, 2017). Given the recent closure of Queensland Nickel, essentially all of Australian nickel production occurs in Western Australia and the primary producers of processed nickel products include Nickel West (Kwinana) with ~84,000 t saleable nickel metal in 2016 (BHP Billiton, 2017), Minara Resources (Murrin Murrin) with 46,700 t nickel metal produced in 2015 (Glencore Australia, 2017), and First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Ravensthorpe) who sold 25,882 t nickel as mixed hydroxide product in 2016 (First Quantum Minerals, 2017). The total sales of nickel from Western Australia in the 2015-16 financial year were 175,722 t. The study of nickel laterites at CSIRO recommenced at the time second generation High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) plants were being commissioned at Bulong, Cawse and Murrin Murrin in the late 1990’s. A combination of technical and engineering issues meant that the ramp-up times at these operations were slower than expected and the outcomes resulting from the attendant problems are well documented (e.g. Griffin & Becker, 2000; Reid & Barnett, 2002; O’Callaghan, 2003) while the issues faced at the BHP-Billiton-built Ravensthorpe plant have been addressed by the current owners of this project, First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Piper, 2012)."

Other than being reasonably certain of the average vertical stress being lithostatic, there can be little certainty about stress in the ground. The stresses and strains in rock are a function of gravitational effects, external load, thermal changes, diagenesis and their mechanical properties including elastic, creep and post failure behaviours. It is highly desirable to measure stress where mining is going to take place, even if the virgin stress condition has already been changed by mining. The concept of some far field stress value that is more or less constant is usually invalid and can be dangerous to use in mine design. Measuring stress is not simple. The basic processes are broken into two categories, one where the rock will not fail around the borehole in which the stress is being measured and one where the rock has failed or will fail. Because of the complexity and cost in obtaining a single, precise stress measurement it is highly desirable to have some system to be able to obtain an idea of the uniformity, or otherwise of the stress situation between precise measurements. Table 1 shows the methods for measuring stress. The first five methods work on the basis of some fairly direct measurement of mechanical rock behaviour while the last three are attempts to get some idea of stress out of core long after it is removed from the host rock. While these latter methods appear to tick all the boxes for applicability there is a great deal of uncertainty in the results that they deliver. This paper reviews the methods for measuring stress and presents two new methods. These are a three dimensional overcore system to provide precise stress measurements in rocks that will not fail around the borehole and a core ovality system. The latter can be used to provide information on the stress difference orthogonal to the core. It is particularly useful because it can be used every metre of core length.

The Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) was developed in Britain during the 1950's as a process which could produce zinc from a blast furnace. Since then it has evolved into an efficient means of producing zinc and lead from lower grade raw materials, both of primary and secondary origin. These changes have been in response to the need to improve the cost competitive position of the ISF in a climate of decreasing metal prices. The improvements at the Cockle Creek smelter of Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited have resulted from work undertaken in four main areas: 1. Changes in plant design and operating practice to give more stable furnace operation. 2. Improvements to the quality of sinter being charged to the furnace. 3. Improved monitoring of process variables and the formulation of control strategies based on the improved data. 4. Increased understanding of the processes occuring within the furnace shaft to allow predictive modelling to be undertaken. Work in these areas is still progressing but the work to date has resulted in a significant improvement in the production rate and efficiency of operation.

The paper covers many literature reports of processes using nitrogenous species as an oxidant for processing refractory gold ores, especially development in the pretreatment of refractory gold minerals by nitric acid. These processes include the high-pressure and the atmospheric-pressure oxidation methods. High-pressure oxidation processes are difficult to carry out, because they require high-capital cost autoclaves. Atmospheric-pressure oxidation processes are easier to manipulate, but complete absorption and reuse of NOx is difficult or multiple-stage absorption must be established for its reuse. So, some new methods were developed, such as catalytically oxidizing technology of NOx to allow subsequent recovery of gold. Keywords: nitric acid; pretreatment; refractory gold

ARSENIC is a very old substance. The ancients speak of it in their writings, and its use has developed very little until recent years. The ancients used it in making pigments, in medicine, and for poison. They also tell of the difficulties of handling it-an experience which is very similar to our own. Until about 10 years ago, arsenic was very cheap and was a drug on the market. About that time the boll weevil began making serious inroads on the American cotton crops, and after much investigation the Depart-ment of Agriculture developed a very successful poison for this pest, consisting of calcium arsenate. The weevil pest has continued, and as the cotton planters have become convinced that calcium arsenate is the best material to use against the weevil, the demands for it have been steadily increasing, resulting not only in a rising price of arsenic but in a very serious shortage so far as our country is concerned. So serious has this shortage become, and so vital is it to the cotton growing industry, that Congress has appointed a committee to investigate and report on the situation. A meeting of arsenic producers and consumers was held in New York last December to take stock of the situation and to see what could be done. The extreme increase in, the market price of arsenic-from 6 c. to 15 c. per lb. in less than a year-has been very harmful to the producers as well as to the consumers. The gold district of northwestern Quebec, though it has attracted such widespread attention during the past year, is still in the prospect stage throughout, and one must preface any remarks about it with the plain statement that its capacity to produce gold commercially is still subject to proof. However, this proof may be forthcoming any day, and from widely separated localities. Consequently it is of interest to note some of the features of the region and of the prospects now being developed. First I shall note the relation of this mining development to the province of Quebec and to the Dominion; then will follow a brief resume of the known geological facts; and finally I shall describe briefly some of the more advanced prospects developed during the past twelve-month. Those that have followed closely the fortunes of the new gold-field will find little that is new in what follows, but it may serve a useful purpose for others by bringing together scattered items of information and presenting them as a whole. GOLD MINING AND AGRICULTURE First let us consider the gold belt in its relation to the province of Quebec. Apart from the world-renowned asbestos camp south of the St. Lawrence, it is the only mineral development of major importance the province has experienced. It is the first important development in the province's vast area of Precambrian rocks, most of which remains as yet totally unexplored and unprospected. The relative importance of this first mining camp in northern Quebec cannot as yet be gauged, but it is bound to stimulate an active interest in the other mineral-bearing areas now known to exist, and in the vast unexplored spaces.

The teaching of courses in geology, mining and extractive metallurgy in Australian universities is undergoing significant change largely as a result of the initiative taken by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA). This has resulted in a major program aimed at developing national under- and postgraduate courses in selected areas with the aim of making these available to a consortium of participating universities. Murdoch University, together with the A J Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy has been commissioned to develop the course in hydrometallurgy. Progress in the development of this course will be discussed in terms of overall philosophy, content and mode of delivery. Aspects of the extension to a Web-based course will also be summarized. Murdoch University has also established a hydrometallurgical pilot plant on the campus and the results of the first continuous operation for several months using under- and postgraduate students as operators will be discussed from the point of view of practical training and providing an interface with the local industry.

The scope of this paper is to recount the development of segmental linings used in tunnel construction, starting with its inception as an improvement to the brick-lined tunnel approach of Brunel in England and moving through the history and development to the present day, before finishing with a few insights into what the future might hold. The paper also discusses the motivation for the relatively recent move towards replacing conventional steel reinforcing cages with steel fibres and the reasons why steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) is rapidly becoming the material of choice for manufacturing precast concrete segmental linings.

The refractory industry in New Zealand is small, consisting of two main manufacturers - one at Huntly and the other at Kamo. Together these would have an annual refractory production of about 30 000 tonnes. The industries which use refractories include two steelworks, NewZealand Steel Limited and Pacific Steel Limited, the former is involved in continuous casting from sponge, iron and scrap steel and the latter is involved in ingot teaming from scrap steel and steel billets; One aluminium smelter, cement works, dairy companies, small foundries producing engineering requirements and many other small users. The New Zealand manufacturers produce refractories in thefire brick range, that is up to 50 per cent alumina content (ignited basis), based on indigenous raw materials and in the high alumina range up to 85 per cent alumina content (ignited basis) based on imported bauxites. All of the basic refractories high purity silica and high alumina low alkali refractories and many of the higher grade acid resisting refractories are imported.

Introduction The season of 1927, from the point of view of mining development in the area west of Rouyn, was quite satisfactory. Serious prospecting and development' were undertaken over quite a large area, though the results in the matter of discovering new deposits of economic importance were rather disappointing. A large amount of systematic prospecting and geological mapping was carried out in the course of the work, and a considerable body of information collected. A widespread occurrence of sulphide mineralization was noted, chiefly near bodies of older gabbro. The frequent occurrence of pyrrhotite in or near which local concentrations of chalcopyrite were localized, lends support to the idea that such older sulphides as pyrite and pyrrhotite are relatively easy of replacement by chalcopyrite. From the prospector's viewpoint, areas near the contacts of masses of older gabbro are favourable prospecting ground, and pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization are favourable indications that massive chalcopyrite may be found where it has completely replaced such sulphides. Pyrrhotite being magnetic is easily located, even where drift covered, by the use of such convenient instruments as the dip-needle and the magnetometer. It is suggested that pyrrhotite bodies, when located, be thoroughly prospected because of the fairly strong probability that they may show replacement by the more valuable chalcopyrite.

The use of thermal integrity testing to verify the quality of deep foundations has increased significantly in the UK and other world markets over the last 5 years. The introduction of distributed fibre optic sensing to this field has broadened the range of applications in which it can be deployed and the types of foundations which can be tested. This paper presents how fibre optic sensing technology can be successfully deployed in the construction environment the range of foundation techniques to which it can be applied. Alongside developments in the practical aspects of thermal testing, progress has been made in establishing assessment criteria which can be used to evaluate the results. This paper presents recent examples of comparative studies on foundations which include both thermal integrity testing, cross hole sonic logging and intrusive coring. The use of distributed strain measurement during pile load testing presents an alternative means to verify the assessment criteria used for integrity testing. This new approach can achieve comparable results to foundation exhumation or intrusive investigation and at a fraction of the cost. This paper presents the findings of several such studies, highlighting the benefits and opportunities for future improvement of the method.
