The importance of particle and suspension analysis of used lubricants in a preventative maintenance program is stressed, in particular with regard to mobile equipment in a mining operation.

An extensive blast monitoring program has been carried out to study explosive performance and the effectiveness of blast designs in production blasts in a deep underground mine. Comprehensive monitoring of blasting vibrations through multi-station high-capacity high-frequency accelerometers, and borehole deformation history have been the main tools of such analysis. The mining activity involves relatively unstressed stopes as well as highly stressed stopes. More than 30 production blasts have been monitored, and the respective vibrations from close-range as well as distant seismic stations have been analyzed, and the vibration parameters (amplitude and frequency) have been correlated with explosive charge weight in the holes. It is found that the correlation between blasting rounds and the corresponding vibration amplitudes often have poor correlation for a very significant portion of the blasts. These point to either explosive charge malfunction in those specific blast holes, or inadequate blast design, or the effect of high in-situ stresses, or any combination thereof. This paper analyzes these variables and their effect on the overall blasting operation at the mine.

Determination of the state of an underground fire plays an important role in fire fighting, rescue and reopening operations. This is normally achieved by the analysis and interpretation of fire gases taken from the fire zone. However, drawing conclusions from gas analysis is not an easy task and needs specialist skills, expertise and experience that are usually beyond the knowledge of the officials in a mine. The complexities of a mine fire and the uncertainties of available information often make effective fire fighting decisions difficult if not impossible. This paper describes a knowledge based expert system that can aid in the diagnosis of sealed coal mine fires. Using a commercially available shell, the expert system has been designed to accommodate a series of diagnostic rules replicating the reasoning logic that would be used by human experts. The system allows the diagnosis of explosibility of the fire zone and trends of various fire ratios to be easily visualised for decision making. By continuously analysing the incoming information, the system is able to provide a rapid assessment of the situation of a sealed mine fire prevailing under specific mining and geological conditions. In addition, short term trends in fire behaviour can be predicted and possible fire control actions recommended. An example is given and shows how this system can be used as an analytical tool in various ways to assist the combating of coal mine fires. Further development of the system is discussed.

Uma fonte promissora de pós-descarga é a obtida por cátodo oco, isso devido a sua operação, baixo custo, elevada densidade de espécies ativas e design. Neste trabalho empregou-se a espectroscopia de emissão para diagnosticar as espécies ativas produzidas descarga em catodo oco. Variou-se a corrente elétrica na descarga de Ar entre 150 e 600 mA para verificar a influência da corrente na descarga. Posteriormente, fixou-se a corrente elétrica e variou-se o fluxo de N2 na pós-descarga de 1 a 6 cm3/min. Observou-se que a corrente elétrica influenciou na intensidade de emissão das espécies produzidas pelo sistema de descarga cátodo oco. Além disso, não foi observada a emissão ótica da espécie de ? 2 N na pós-descarga Ar-N2.

El presente estudio refiere el diagnóstico correcto de la silicosis a través de una revisión de la historia ocupacional, historia clínica y el ambiente del trabajo del trabajador. El control del trabajador y del ambiente de trabajo, lo deben realizar los médicos e ingenieros, para evitar o retardar la progresión de la silicosis o enfermedades respiratorias y facilitar el cambio de lugar de ocupación del trabajador, controlando el medio ambiente, respectivamente. Asimismo, en la evaluación del riesgo silicógeno en una industria extractiva, el ingeniero utiliza el instrumento Midget Iapinger, el muestreo, y los métodos de "campo brillante" para la cuenta de particulas, y la dispensación de la muestra en aceite de inmersión para la medición de partículas. El análisis de sílice libre comprende los métodos petrográficos, difracción de rayos X y el de fusión. Finalmente se hace una interpretación de resultados y se presenta un informe detallado de la condición de salubridad del trabajador.

Ante la alta demanda energética de la mina Orcopampa en Arequipa, el costo de la misma se ha incrementado, así como ha generado problemas de transición entre las nuevas fuentes de energía tradicionales y las nuevas. En este sentido, el presente trabajo busca establecer políticas de racionalización del consumo de energía en la operación del complejo minero a costos bajosa a través de un programa de acciones que logre el ahorro de energía. La metodología del estudio comprende 4 etapas: reconocimiento preliminar del sistema, programa de mediciones, procesamiento y análisis de información y definición de un plan de acciones para reducir costos. Finalmente, se comprobó que la aplicación de este programa de acciones propuesto se ajusta de forma gradual al programa de acciones, logrando una ahorro anual de US$ 269 000 0.

RECENT experiments indicate that the usual type of concentrating-table is not only poorly adapted to produce the desired results, but also is based upon an incorrect principle, namely, the use of riffles to perform the work of stratifying the various minerals. We have heard a good deal about riffles for concentrating-tables; exhaustive experiments have been made to discover the proper form of riffle, or to prove the superiority this or that form; disputes and patent-litigation have arisen over the matter of riffles, and thus many have been led to believe that the riffle is the saving-device upon which the process of concentration depends. In the present paper it is proposed to show that the riffle is greatly overrated as to the part it performs in the concentration of minerals, and that, in the near future, it may possibly be eliminated entirely from that process. The experiments in question have shown that the troublesome riffle can be considered of secondary importance at the most, and should be so classed in the construction of a concentrating-table built upon the right lines. The action of any form of riffle on a concentrating-table is such as to upset and retard the process of settling and stratifying the various minerals on the table-deck. From the deck of a riffled table no concentrates can be delivered until the deck is "bedded," that is, until a sufficient amount of metallic values have been fed to the table to spread over a large portion of the deck, forming a substratum of the heavier minerals. This substratum must be maintained by the feed within quite narrow limits, and directly proportional to the rate of discharge from the table, in order that the bed shall not be lost. Neste trabalho é apresentada a concepção de um modelo com objetivo de gerar a superfície de mínimo consumo de redutor (carbono) para a produção de ferro primário. No seu desenvolvimento foram consideradas as condições de equilíbrio das reações de redução e os balanços de massa e de energia. Sua aplicação à redução em Altos Fornos é exemplificada para situações reais, baseada no banco de dados operacionais de uma usina siderúrgica. Foi possível, a partir de planos de corte nestas superfícies, gerar diagramas binários do tipo CR-RD (Consumo de Redutor-Redução Direta), passíveis de serem obtidos “on-line” com o processo. Dentre os resultados obtidos, foi possível identificar, confirmar e prever, através da análise de casos reais, algumas inviabilidades termodinâmicas importantes do forno, conferindo desta forma maior segurança operacional ao processo.

ENGINEERS and geologists find the magnetic compass unreliable in many mineral bearing areas because of local magnetic attraction. This is the case in the vicinity of many contact deposits, and particularly true in the Lake Superior district where iron formation is wide spread and causes wide fluctuations of the magnetic needle. One of the most useful instruments for geologic traversing or running grid and claim lines under these conditions is the dial compass which does not depend upon magnetism. Difficulties encountered in the field because of local attraction can be overcome through transit observation of Polaris or the sun, or use of the solar attachment. However, a field party often lacks the equipment or time for work of such accuracy and it is here that the dial compass finds its use.

Many different types of structures and materials have been used to build mineral processing facilities throughout the years. Although structure type and building material were not viewed as significant factors affecting the health of employees in these facilities when they were built, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has found that building type can impact respirable dust and noise levels. NIOSH performed a study in which it evaluated three building types: masonry, an open-structure design, and a steel-sided design. This study indicated that an open-structure design (no walls) was superior from both a dust and noise (health) standpoint when compared to the other two structure types. Therefore, companies may want to consider this design when building new structures.

Studies of the adsorption of dialkyldithiocarbamates at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite have shown that characteristic contact angles are obtained at galena surfaces in the 7-10 pH range, whereas lower angles are obtained at unactivated sphalerite surfaces even at pH 71 Further, the angles at sphalerite surfaces progressively decrease with increase in pH. However, when sphalerite is activated with cupric sulfate, characteristic contact angles are obtained at pH 7 and beyond. This shows that galena and sphalerite can be selectively floated with dithiocarbamate collectors at pH 7 and beyond. Experimental Materials Ore: The lead-zinc ore for the present study was obtained through the courtesy of the Geological Survey of India from Dariba, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. The average ore analyzed 15.5% lead, 11.6% zinc, 6.7% iron, 15.6% sulfur and 36.6% acid insolubles. The ore was crushed in a Denver laboratory rod mill and sieved in a Denver automatic sieve shaker to obtain a -200- to +250-mesh (Tyler standard) fraction. This particular size was chosen because it was conducive to good liberation of sulfide minerals, both from one another and from gangue minerals. Collectors: Dimethyl, diethyl, diisopropyl and diisobutyl dithiocarbamates were prepared and purified by the methods described by Klopping and Van der Kerk.2 A freshly prepared 0.03% dithiocarbamate solution in distilled water was used for flotation studies. Frother: A 0.03% solution of pine oil in ethyl alcohol was employed. Activator: 7.3 g of cupric sulfate pentahydrate were dissolved in 1 1 of water and used for the activation of sphalerite. Depressant: 16.0 g of zinc sulfate heptahydrate were dissolved in 1 1 of water and used for the depression of sphalerite.

We all live in professional silos û comfort zones, where we talk to like-minded people with the same training, experience and view of the world. We note in passing the existence of other disciplines, but they are tolerated rather than embraced. To the geologist, the metallurgist is a mad scientist conjuring gold out of some foul solution about which the less said the better. To the metallurgist, the geologist is a bearded, self-appointed sage who guesses what is under our feet by sniffing the air, and drives a Land Rover badly. As to the view of mining engineers held by both geologists and metallurgists, this is best left to the imagination. And of course we are all confused by the term æmetallurgistÆ. I am called a metallurgist though my skills are in mineral processing not metal processing, but I canÆt be called a mineralogist because that definition is already taken. *Please note that this is available as an extended abstract only*

This paper presents information on design analyses of large diameter piles using conventional p-y curves as recommended by the American Petroleum Institute (API RP2A, 1993). API RP2A adopted the soft clay criterion developed by Matlock (Matlock, 1970) based on 12.75-inch piles. API RP2A also adopted the API sand criteria originally introduced by Reese, Cox, and Koop (Reese et. al., 1974) based on 24-inch piles. Since Matlock and Reese published their original papers, there have been several publications recommending changes to their p-y criteria, especially regarding the need to adjust the Matlock p-y curves for pile diameter effects. The following sections attempt to clarify the issue of diameter effects on p-y curves.

Since explosives are the source of all energy used for rock blast fragmentation and heave, multidimensional effects in the detonation driving zone become essential to better describe the detonation process. In order to use the explosive as an energy source-information for more realist blasting performance simulations, a simple and effective modelling strategy is desirable. Facing this challenge, an engineering approach to two-dimensional unconfined non-ideal detonation is proposed. Based on the elliptical construction of the shock locus, the model combines the axial cylindrical stick Q1D solution with some additional limiting conditions to determine the sonic edge of the charge. For a given set of rate law parameters and velocity of detonation, a complete axial solution is firstly computed through the Q1D model. From this solution, a vital relationship between the axial shock curvature with the shock shape parameters can be stablished. Once this relationship is found, the problem simply reduces in finding the shock shape parameters subject to the sonic edge condition. As a result of this calculation, the corresponding charge diameter can be found. Consequently, the proposed model can map the diametereffect curve by relating the unconfined velocity of detonation with its corresponding diameter. Finally, because of its low computation cost, the proposed engineering approach can be also used for characterizing the rate law parameters by fitting to data from unconfined detonation experiments

Polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) have been widely used as cutting elements in the drilling tools for the oil, gas, civil and mining industries because of their faster penetration rates and longer bit life. US Department of Energy reports that PDC bits account for more than one-third of the total footage drilled worldwide (US Department of Energy, 2004). However, non-thermally-stable diamond composites (NTSDC) have seldom been applied to geothermal drilling, since premature failures of such PDC cutters have been observed in hard rock formations. Several factors need to be considered to prevent premature failure of cutters and improve cutting performance when using PDC-based bits and other rock cutting tools. The first set of factors consists of the strength, density, stiffness, toughness and thermal resistance of the PDC and the rock. A second set relates to the complex behaviour of the bonding between the PDC cutter and the bit matrix, or the pick and the pick holder, which is vital in maintaining stable, reliable and durable adhesion of the cutters to their hubs. Finally, based on a better understanding of the cutting processes, the formulation of a predictive model would assist in further development of cutter design.

New equipment for seabed sampling, presently at the prototype stage, operates on the principle of diamond core drilling with wire line core barrels and is designed to drill cores from the seabed at depths down to 200 m with a continuous recovery of cores from an attendant vessel. The machine operates on the seabed by remote control from a console on the vessel. Neither installation nor operation requires the use of divers. Principal Applications Principal areas of application for the drill which is dubbed Maricor include investigation drilling in the continental shelf, mapping geological conditions before large drilling platforms are installed and exploring proposed undersea tunnel routes.
