A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

In this study, in order to achieve ultra-high strength without reducing plasticity, a novel heat treatment involving a pre-quenching process prior to conventional intercritical annealing (P-IDP) was proposed in a low carbon low alloy DP steel. It revealed that abundant fraction of banded structure was observed after conventional intercritical heat treatment (IDP) due to the inheritance of cold rolling deformation. However, the banded structure in novel heat treatment was eliminated significantly, whilst the refined microstructure was relatively more homogeneous with ultrafine ferrite grains. Moreover, obvious chain-networked martensite grains along the ferrite grain boundaries were obtained. The optimum mechanical properties with ultimate strength of 1238 MPa, total elongation of 17%, product of strength and elongation (PSE) of 21GPa% were obtained by P-IDP treatment, which was much higher than the values reported with similar composition. As to pre-quenching treatment, all of grain refinement, homogeneous distribution of martensite islands and precipitated strengthening of microalloyed carbides were beneficial to improve the final strength and ductility.

REGARDING the results of preferential flotation at Cananea, Weinig has stated that "The concentrating mill of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company at Cananea, Mexico, furnishes an excellent example of modern flotation practice. The complete figures are given because they present so forcibly the advantages of modern selective flotation."' L. O. Howard notes that "Perhaps the outstanding example so far published of improvements in results through the use of selective flotation is that at Cananea, Mexico." The following notes indicate the conditions under which the results were obtained at Cananea; also the effect of preferential flotation at the concentrator and at the smelter. In the majority of cases the full benefit of selective flotation is not fully realized, as the concentrates are shipped from the mill to smelters owned by other companies. The saving made at a certain concentrator by this method of flotation may be well understood but the saving resulting at the smelter from the results of preferential flotation at the mill is not so apparent, as the data are contained in the smelting records of some other company. Even at the smelter the great gains following preferential flotation may not be noted, as a variety of ores and concentrates from various sources are received and the difference from the changed concentrator operations of a certain mill may be obscured. As noted by Professor Weinig and Professor Howard, the results obtained at Cananea brought about a veritable metallurgical revolution at the smelter. There are probably plants at which a better preferential separation is being made than at Cananea. Many ores contain barren iron pyrite which, when depressed, does not carry copper into the tailing. Some concentrators use clean uncontaminated water for milling and in others the ore is ground much finer than at Cananea. All of these items are concerned in perfect separation. Metallic sulfide minerals present in most gold ores, Morila gold ore included, often decompose under typical gold leaching conditions. The reactions and their products consume oxygen and sodium cyanide, consequently competing for oxygen and cyanide used in gold dissolution. The resultant effect is to reduce both the kinetics of gold dissolution and overall extraction efficiencies. The present paper discusses results obtained from plant data analysis and laboratory work investigating the problem of higher than expected consumption of sodium cyanide at Morila Mine Gold Plant. Cyanide consumption at the Morila Mine Gold Plant had been consistently running at 46 per cent higher than the expected value without any corresponding increase in gold recovery. In fact, plant data analysis showed an inverse relationship between cyanide consumption and grind, as well as cyanide consumption and gold recovery. Experimental and plant data analysis indicated that better control of the [CN-]/[O2] ratio is necessary for the efficient use of reagents and achievement of higher gold recoveries. Careful control of this ratio at a minimum of eight enabled the reduction of sodium cyanide consumption by 200 g/t, that is, from 650 g/t to 450 g/t. Coupling these experimental conditions with the addition of lead nitrate at 100 g/t improved the overall gold recovery to 93 per cent compared to the average plant recovery of 90.2 per cent over a six-month period. This improvement was also reflected in the leaching kinetics where 70 per cent gold extraction was achieved after four hours, as compared to 59 per cent in the absence of lead nitrate addition. Also of great importance is the fact that the combination of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen gave inferior performance relative to either of the two reagents used separately. This scenario presents an opportunity for excluding hydrogen peroxide, an expensive reagent, and focusing on improving the oxygen addition system to boost dissolved oxygen concentration in the plant.

The implementation of presplit perimeter control in underground mining as a method to decrease dilution yields positive benefits throughout the current and future mining cycles. A case study to understand the benefits of reducing overbreak and underbreak in a cut and fill mining cycle was performed to quantify the reduction in backbreak. The study was performed in a control section of the mine where a presplit perimeter control design was utilized for a length of heading. This control heading was then compared to the existing standard blasting design within the same mining zone. The comparison included multiple aspects of the mining advance including overbreak, dilution of waste, dilution of Cemented Rock Fill, bolt counts, and cycle times. Once mining in the control section was completed and mining commenced in adjacent headings, blast damage due to blast design could be quantified.

In this investigation, effect of pressure depth on the globulizations of AZ91 magnesium alloy was studied. Cylindrical samples of AZ91 alloy with 1 cm and 2cm in height and 2.5cm in diameter (H/D = 0.4 and 0.8) were prepared, then the samples were hot pressed at 10 and 30% strain at a constant temperature of 200°C; subsequently reheated at 555°C in different times. Results obtained from optical microscopy (OM) showed that the thickness of the samples and consequently, depth of strain affected regions have remarkable effect on the degree of globulization. In addition, it was found that at a constant strain and holding time, structure of thinner samples is more globular than thicker ones.

"Oxidation autoclaves are normally operated at elevated temperature and pressure. The improvement in kinetics is due to combined effect of temperature and partial pressure of oxygen. In this paper exclusive effect of pressure has been studied with a low grade sulphide ore at below 100 °C temperature. These studies are related to development of a novel tower-like reactor that utilizes hydrostatic pressure. Technology is designed to generate high amount of effective fluid volume for high solid content slurries with lower energy consumption and improved kinetics compared to normal atmospheric operation.INTRODUCTIONEconomical utilization of low-grade ores requires handling of enormous amount of material. This sets new requirements for process equipment in terms of size and energy efficiency. For example on the field of mineral processing this has lead to a six fold increase in the operating volume of mechanical flotation cells over the past two decades. Ore beneficiation methods like flotation greatly reduce amount of material that needs to be further processed in smelters or hydrometallurgical refineries. However with some ore types, such as nickel laterites and refractory gold ores, traditional concentration technologies cannot be utilized. Thus direct leaching of ground ore could be an attractive option. In many cases normal atmospheric tank leaching has traditionally been a non-feasible option mainly due to high capital and operational expenses induced by large amount of stirred reactors required. Main restriction for increasing reactor size to beyond 500 m3 has been mechanical load and power requirements set by mixing in cases when high dispersion efficiency of gas is required. THEORETICAL BACKGROUNDIn hydrometallurgical industry autoclaves are typically operated at elevated temperature and pressure. In many cases increase in operating temperature is the desired phenomena and improvements in kinetics are strongly related to that. Thus increase in pressure might be induced solely by water vapor pressure. However when gaseous feed is present, pressure itself has a strong effect on leaching kinetics for various reasons and its role should not be neglected."

One of the major challenges for the Canadian Gen IV Super-Critical Water-cooled Reactor (SCWR) concept is the selection of fuel cladding materials. The Canadian SCWR concept will operate at a core outlet temperature of 625 oC and 25 MPa of pressure with peak cladding temperature reaching as high as 800 oC. Corrosion resistance is an important factor for material selection. Austenitic stainless steels that contain Cr contents greater than 18 wt.% are generally considered to provide adequate corrosion resistance. In this work, the pressure dependence of the corrosion of austenitic stainless steel 310 containing 24 wt% Cr is assessed at 625 C for exposures of 1000 hours to evaluate the suitability of superheated steam as a surrogate for supercritical water at 25 MPa. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) revealed that 310 exposed to different pressure conditions at 625 oC. (i.e., 0.1, 8 and 29 MPa) had generally the same type of the oxide structure, i.e., a Cr-rich oxide with the spinel structure on outer surface adjacent to the water phase. The material exposed at 8 and 29 MPa had a double layer oxide structure, with the outer oxide layer having a much larger grain size, while the samples exposed at 0.1 MPa showed only a single spinel-phase oxide layer. Cr-depleted recrystallized austenite grains were found underneath the spinel phase oxide. The adjacent large-grained austenite substrate had M23C6 carbides in the grain interior. The implications of these results are discussed.

ANY information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undis-turbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamina-tion by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been exten-sively studied by other investigators. 1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as being outside the scope of the present experiments, which were con-cerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essen-tial and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condi-tion while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program.

The rheological properties of five kaolins, isostatically pressurized at 4 x10 Pa for 10 min in the presence/absence of water, was determined. Under dry conditions, measured viscosity values either decreased or remained the same. After treatment under wet conditions, measured viscosity values were 30-60% higher at high shear and 50-60% higher at low shear. These results correlate with variations in nanomorphology and structural order. Dry compaction degraded kaolinite crystals but wet-pressing appeared to cause an increase in the proportion of euhedral crystallites and a decrease in deformed crystals. Dry compaction decreased the low-defect phase proportion (ldp), but in contrast, the ldp in wet-treated kaolins remained constant or increased. Results show that hydrous pressure treatment produces a change in viscosity of kaolin suspensions, yielding the potential for improving paper coating performance, whereas anhydrous pressure treatment decreased or maintained the viscosity.

IN recent years there has been an increase of interest in the flow of gases at relatively high pressures. Hydrodynamic calculation of the energy losses in the flow of gases in conduits, as well as through the porous solid materials constituting natural petroleum reservoirs, requires a knowledge of the viscosity of the fluid at the pressure and temperature involved. Although there are numerous publications concerning the absolute viscosity? of hydrocarbon gases at atmospheric pressure, there appears to be little information available relating to the effect of pressure upon the viscosity of these gases. Vogel28 determined the viscosity of methane at 32° F. and atmospheric pressure. His measurements at 32° F. were later substantiated by the measurements of Rankine and Smith17 at 63° and 212° F. Ishida12 also reported values for the viscosity of methane at atmospheric pressure. Trautz and Kurz26 measured the viscosity of propane at atmospheric pressure, from 83° to 530° F., by the use of a short capillary tube. Rap-penecker18 determined the viscosity of gaseous isopentane at elevated temperatures. Day' made an accurate investigation of the effect of pressure upon the viscosity of n-pentane and isopentane at pressures from 2 lb. per sq. in. ? to the vapor pressure at 77° F. (approximately 9.8 and 13.3 lb. per sq. in., respectively). Earhart5 reported data upon the viscosity of several natural gases measured by the long capillary-tube method. The viscosity of air, at atmospheric pressure and 73.4° F., was measured by Harrington7 by the rotating-cylinder method. Kellstrom13 has recently made an elaborate investigation of the viscosity of air at atmospheric pressure. The latter work is perhaps the most accurate investigation of the viscosity of a gas that has been made. .

This paper presents observations on the installation of drilled shafts from two construction projects and an academic study with experimental and analytical parts. The construction projects involved the use of pressurized drilling methods. The experimental part of the academic study involved the use of the auger drilling method. The analytical part of the academic study investigated the effect of drilling methods on the soil-structure interaction and the behavior of drilled shafts under lateral loads. The concept of ?free-length? is introduced for the lateral load design of pressure-drilled shafts that are thought to be fully embedded within a soil media. The academic part of the study presented herein was conducted in Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

The effect of pretreatment potential on the response of a gold electrode for Eh measurements in sulfide solutions was examined in terms of measured Eh values and electrode response time. The electrode response time is defined as the time required for the electrode to reach a steady-state value. The relationship between measured Eh values and the hydrosulfide ion concentration is established. The effect of pH, the reversibility of the gold electrode in the sulfide solutions, and the reproducibility of measurements are also investigated. A mixed potential theory is proposed to explain the observations.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is an industrial waste from the production of phosphate fertilizer. The utilization of PG is restricted by its containing impurities, and the pretreatment is crucial to eliminating these impurities. The purpose of the research is to recycle pretreatment PG as raw material for preparation of a-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (a-HH) by salt solution method. The effect of pretreatment technologies of lime neutralization and washing on dehydration rate, phase composition and morphology evolution of a-HH were investigated by crystal water content analysis, XRD and SEM. Furthermore, the change of pH in the reaction process was also discussed in detail. The results show that the dehydration rate of conversion PG to a-HH increases and the corresponding induction period, crystal growth period and total time decrease with an increase in CaO dosage from 0.2% to 0.6%. In the presence of 0.4% CaO or 0.6% CaO, the a-HH presents a long hexagon-prism-shaped crystal with a purity of 94%, and the end face of a-HH presents polyhedron. The system pH sharply decreases with the reaction time under different CaO dosage, and the pH variation from the initial alkalinity to acidity. The main reason is that as the co-crystallized phosphorus dissolved and released HPO42-, and with the pH decreasing to 4-5, HPO42- transformed into H2PO4-. The dehydration rate of washing PG is lower than that of original PG. Compared with the original PG, a-HH with the larger width and smaller aspect ratio can be achieved from the pretreatment PG subjected to lime neutralization and washing, meanwhile the crystal surface is more smooth.

THE object of this study is to investigate the effect of prior tensile strain on the fracture stress of a metal. This is done in a theoretical manner starting from the point of view developed by the author in his thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals. The results are compared with experimental findings and a rational interpretation is given to work that shows the variation of fracture stress with prior tensile strain. THEORY OF FRACTURE In the thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals developed earlier,1 it was shown that a critical strain energy per unit volume exists. This is characteristic of the material and may be calculated from basic thermodynamic data. When the area under the flow curve reaches this characteristic value, fracture occurs. The general criterion for fracture is expressed in the form u ± uo = JLm?AV/V [1] where Lm, is the latent heat of melting of the unit volume, ?V/V is the ratio of the change in volume of the unit volume to the original unit volume on passing from the solid to the liquid state, [uo] is an initial energy density, and J is a conversion factor, which changes energy from heat to mechanical units. As a first approximation, it will be assumed that the stress-strain curve is the straight line that extends from the point of maximum load onward, extrapolated back to the axis of zero strain, for example, line AC of Fig. 1. If the point of intersection of the straight line with the axis of zero strain is represented by so, and the slope of the straight line is p, the analytic form of the flow curve is [s = s + pd [2]] and the strain energy per unit volume evaluated from [JvdS] becomes (vsod + pd2/ 2). When this latter term reaches the critical value JLm?V/V (designated hereafter by M), it is assumed that fracture occurs. This leads to the following expression for the fracture stress: [s1 = \/C r.2 + 2Mp [31] The strain at fracture may be calculated from Eqs 2 and 3. It is assumed in this paper that the initial energy density is either zero or that it may be neglected. Furthermore, the complicated states of stress and of strain existing in the necked region of the tensile specimen after "necking" has occurred will also be neglected for the present, so that average conditions will be assumed to prevail. In a COREM-McGill collaborative research and development project, gas dispersion parameters and froth properties were manipulated in a copper flotation plant to study interactions between the collection and the cleaning zones. In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in several different types of flotation cells is reported. Froth stability, measured by image analysis, was related to the following process conditions for specific flotation machines in an industrial case study: Gas flow rate, collector dosage, pH, frother type and dosage. Across the range examined, froth stability was improved through an increase in gas flow rate and/or frother dosage. Metallurgical results (grade and recovery) showed that both gold and copper were dependent on froth stability. Results indicated that flotation conditions could be optimized by monitoring froth stability.

This paper reports the results of a study to determine the effect of process control agent (PCA) on the characteristics of Ti-Mg powders during milling. It has been shown that a 2% increase in PCA content leads to up to a 40% increase in yield of the milled powder but reduces the kinetics of the mechanical alloying process. The introduction of 4% PCA decreases the mean powder particle size by up to 30%, whereas 6% PCA increases the mean particle size by up to 230%. "Globally, the use of metallic coated steel sheets in the automobile industry is increasing. The sheet should have excellent formability, weldability, paintability and corrosion resistance. Since bare cold rolled steel sheets have certain limitations, application of galvanized steel sheets is steadily expending. Galvannealed steel sheet fulfills all requirements and has become of major interest in the automobile industry.The success of Galvannealed (GA) steels in the body-in-white depends upon material design and parameters of various processes involved, like cold rolling, continuous annealing, hot dipping and galvannealing. In the present work, powdering resistance, one of the important product characteristics of GA, has been studied and a relation is established between the process parameters and the powdering value. The product obtained through optimization of the process parameters have been successfully used by major automotive producers without any powdering problem, for internal as well as external automotive applications.IntroductionThe present automotive industry demands that steel for the auto components should have excellent formability, weldability, paintability, corrosion resistance etc. In addition to this there is specific requirement for some particular components like high surface quality for skin panels. Corrosion resistance of panels is important requirment which determines the life of the particular component and brand value of the automotive. Among all the zinc based steel coating used in the automotive industry coating produced by Galvannealing process has received most attention because of its excellent weldability along with superior corrosion resistance and better paintability."

The response of feldspar flotation to tallow diamine dioleate collector in the presence of sulfuric acid is studied using batch flotation experiments. Application of this nonhydrofluoric acid (non-HF) reagent system in the flotation of mineralogically and chemically different feldspar ores is compared with that of the conventional hydrofluoric acid system. The dependence of flotation recovery and concentrate grade on feed particle size distribution, conditioning time, pulp density, and pH, combined variation of collector and acid addition rates, sodium hydroxide concentration in the collector solution, and initial pulp pH Prior to conditioning is studied. The results have been discussed in relation to applicability of the non-HF system to plant trials, and the nature of the collector adsorption in the selective flotation of feldspar.
