Many of the discrepancies that appear when comparing the results of reducing machinery are due to the nature of the materials reduced and the conditions under which they have been treated. It is therefore necessary that manufacturers should employ standard materials in their tests that sufficiently approximate the substances to be ultimately treated if the information is to be of any value to the purchaser. Another advantage to be gained by employing universal standard materials is that by their means one is enabled to compare the relative values of different types of machines. At present much of the data meted out to the public is insufficient to enable them to judge fairly. Of course the best test would be to send some of the stone tor which the machine is required, to be treated by the various crushers in the market that are likely to be suitable for the purpose, but this is not always possible. It would not take long to become accustomed to judge of the value of a machine for a specific purpose if it was guaranteed to work a certain quantity of some standard rock, even if that standard were not identical with the material to be treated.There are many points to be considered before selecting a machine, such as the size of the rough stone it will take, the size to which it will reduce it the proportions of various grades made when crushing to pass through a given mesh the form of the delivered particles the time taken to treat a+ certain quantity the horse-power required to drive the machine, both when loaded and unloaded whether constructed to crush wet or dry the wear and tear of the machine its total weight and weight of the heaviest part the cost of machine what attention it required whether the wearing parts are readily replaced, and several other points common to all machinery. 'When considering these varying quantities, we can tell at a glance certain machines that are suitable for a particular sort of work, and can then compare those belonging to the same class, thus avoiding errors made purposely or through ignotance by persons interested in different machines, who frequently compare machines originally constructed for.

Discrete element method (DEM) has been used as a popular simulation method to verify designs by visualising how material will flow through complex equipment geometries. Although DEM simulation is a powerful design tool, finding a DEM model which includes real material properties (e.g., shape, cohesion and friction coefficients) is not computationally feasible. In order to obtain more realistic results, particle energy loss due to rolling friction has been highlighted by many researchers. To implement a reverse torque to account for rolling friction, various models have been proposed. On account of the complexity of the problem, there is no unique model for all applications (i.e. dynamic and pseudo-static regimes). In this paper, an in-house developed DEM software (KMPCDEM ©) was used to assess the robustness of three commonly used models by comparing the repose angle of iron ore pellets obtained through the draw down test in a laboratory setup and then the elastic–plastic spring dashpot model was modified based on considering the individual parameters instead of relative parameters of two contact entities. Results showed that the modified model could produce higher repose angle. The modified model was used to calibrate DEM simulation of repose angle of iron ore pellets in a laboratory setup of the draw down test. Comparison of the calibrated DEM simulation and laboratory results showed 2° differences between the predicted and measured angle of repose. Reaction between xanthate ions in solution and oxidized compounds present on the surface of galena to form lead xanthate is considered to be a side reaction not contributing to flotation, although accounting for some consumption of reagent. The direct reaction of lead sulphide with xanthate and oxygen to form lead xanthate is the most significant to flotation. Coadsorntion of dixanthogen is also involved. Previous work has shown lead recovery in lead rougher flotation to be a function of m [H+] where: m = concentration of xanthate in solution rHl = hydrogen ion concentration. A plausible explanation for this relationship is suggest-ed. Likewise, the experimental findings that the amount of xanthate adsorbed under certain conditions is a function of m'[H+] are explained in terms of reaction between xanthate ions and soluble basic lead salts such as PbO.PbS04? It is also shown that m[H+] should have a constant value in lead cleaners operating at a higher pH than the roughers. This conclusion is confirmed by plant data, and the value of the constant agrees well with the calculated value. The finding is useful in mill control.

Alkyl hydroxamic acid was shown to be a suitable collector for the flotation of pyrochlore from carbonatite niobium oxide ores. In the direct batch rougher flotation from the ore without desliming, over 85% of the pyrochlore can be recovered at about 30% mass pull. Cleaner flotation tests showed that the rougher concentrate can be upgraded. The adsorption mechanisms of octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) were studied by using high purity pyrochlore and calcite mineral samples and employing analytical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV/VIS spectroscopy. FTIR showed a shift of the vibrational frequencies of the carbonyl group in hydroxamic acid after adsorption on pyrochlore and calcite, and the shift was more pronounced on pyrochlore. XPS results indicated a lowering of the binding energies (chemical shift) of Nb3d5/2 and Ca2p3/2 electrons on pyrochlore, and the lowering of the binding energies of Ca2p3/2 electrons on calcite, again with the shift being more pronounced on pyrochlore. The results indicated hydroxamic acid formed stronger complexes with pyrochlore than with calcite. Adsorption isotherms indicated that OHA adsorbed more on pyrochlore than on calcite at low concentration. At high concentrations, the adsorption densities on both minerals were similar. All results explained the observed selectivity of the reagents in the flotation of the carbonatite niobium oxide ores.

DOCTOR Albert Sauveur, distinguished scientist and Honorary Member of this Institute, predicted in the first Howe Memorial Lecture that the privilege of delivering this annual address would be considered a highly significant honor. The intervening years have well borne out Sauveur's prophecy. I wish to assure the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers that I also deeply appreciate this honor, recognizing at the same time the present and even more the future responsibilities with which it is accompanied. Several of the previous lecturers had the good fortune to attend the classes of Professor Howe and to work in his laboratories. I was similarly favored, although in my instance and to my great regret the period was all too short. However, Howe's book, published in 1903, "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," afforded me abundant opportunity to continue these studies. How well I remember the inspiration I derived from this famous book by Howe, the metallurgical master, pioneer, and educator! Remembering that Professor Howe contributed numerous papers to The Metallographist, a magazine supported from a technical point of view by the world's pioneers in metallography, I was curious a few days ago to learn the nature of Howe's early contributions to this magazine. The first paper by Howe in the first year of The Metallographist (1898) dealt with the allotropic theory; the second also treated of allotropy, and I quote the first sentence of that paper: The allotropic theory of the hardening of steel may, like so many other important theories, have to be accepted or rejected not on direct proof or disproof, but on the accumulation of circumstantial evidence for or against it. Howe's ability to stimulate others by his deep understanding and clarity of expression was truly remarkable; but just as striking was his intuitive judgment concerning the implications of metallurgical data in the arts and sciences. It therefore seems fitting that this lecture comprise a broad treatment of the subject chosen, rather than a closely documented thesis on any one phase of the problem; that in it attention be focused

THE ancient copper-mines of Lake Superior, having been destroyed or covered by-modern mining-dumps, are not accessible to the present inhabitants of that region, and, since no more are likely to be found, some account of those already discovered, from one who has seen them, may be acceptable to the Institute. Early in May, 1855, 1 took a party of men to open an ancient pit on the Quincy mine-location. Mr. C. C. Douglas was the Agent.," as mine-managers were then called on Lake Superior. The Quincy Co. had previously done work on a fissure-vein, several hundred feet west of the Amygdaloid lode (afterwards called the Pewabic lode), on which was the ancient pit herein described. It was at this pit that the Quincy' main shaft was subsequently stink. The ancient pit showed an apparent depth of about 4 ft., but when cleaned out it was shown to be 14 ft. deep, having been filled up by the sliding-in of material composed largely of broken rock, taken out in sinking the ancient shaft, and left near its mouth. Midway of the shaft, and below water-level, was found a scaffolding, of white-birch poles,- which had been used as a landing, to assist in removing the excavated rock. The shaft was 7 ft. in diameter. The excavation had been done by first building fires in order to disintegrate the rock, as was proved by the abundance of charcoal found; then breaking the softened rock with hammers of diorite, such as is found in the greenstone range on Keweenaw point. These hammers had about. the size of large paving-stones. Only broken ones were found, the whole ones having been doubtless carried away for other work, such as could be traced on the lode for a hundred feet or more to the south. In order to do the discharge estimation better, it is valuable to find out appropriate formulas for estimating discharge in various pits, based on accumulating data, summarizing discharge patterns applying optimum seeking method and principle, by seeking redical exponent with help of the method of exhaustion, as well as testing and making statistics, in accordance with the quality standards established by our practical experience.

The paper presents a study on the oxidation of polymetallic gold ore by oxygen in an autoclave. It presents optimum parameters of autoclave leaching of sulphide refractory ore in self-generated sulphuric acid solutions aiming to get products with favourable technological characteristics from which precious and other useful metals can be recovered. A high partial oxygen pressure (1.5 MPa to 2 MPa), high leaching temperature (190°C to 200°C), pulp density 80 g/L to 240 g/L, ore fraction size 76 µm and leaching time up to 4 hours yield good results in rich ores. The full extent of copper and zinc conversion as well as a high extent of iron conversion has been achieved, while lead, gold and silver and a minor part of iron remain as a solid residue among gangue minerals.

EACH year we gather in this auditorium to honor the memory of a. distinguished American metallurgist and educator. I cannot bring to you reminiscences of Prof. Henry Marion Howe as other lecturers have done. It was not my good fortune to enjoy the-privilege of studying and working under his direction. As I have reflected on the published works of Professor Howe, it has seemed to me that his mind was trained on the nature of metals and on the mechanism which produced known but unexplained effects. He was interested in controlling and regulating the causes so as to produce specific effects, useful in serving mankind. I recall an afternoon in May, 1925, when, at the invitation of Mrs. Howe, I visited his former home, Green Peace at Bedford Hills, N. Y. The purpose of my visit was to receive at the hands of the widow an engraving of Professor Howe, a reproduction of a painting from life. Mrs. Howe showed me his study. The walls of this large attractive room, brilliantly illuminated by the spring sunshine, were literally covered with the scrolls of honors and of decorations which had been conferred on Professor Howe by governments, academies, universities, societies and institutions the world over. As we walked about the room, she pointed out the significance of each honor and recited a few details of each occasion. I sensed the pride with which Mrs. Howe, then in the late autumn of her life, told me of her husbands' achievements, of his struggles, of his disappointments and of his successes. There was a surprisingly familiar note in the recital to which I was listening. I 'have found the same theme running as a disconnected thread through the written accounts of the lives of most men of science. We then went to the drawing room to chat for a few minutes before I said my farewells. As we seated ourselves, Mrs. Howe turned to me and asked: "Mr. Lucas, what of this great microscope of yours? Cannot it be applied to the study of disease? What a great blessing it would be if it could be directed to relieve the suffering of mankind."

The history of mining-industry regulations on cyanide indicates a trend to set criteria based on generalized inferences related to its high toxicity. As toxic-inventory-motivated regulations are framed, material balances are expected to imply atmospheric releases of HCN as a major factor. A review of atmospheric data shows the probable triviality of any environmental impact of such releases, and suggests a very deliberate approach to any proposed regulations regarding these emissions.

At its lowest hierarchical level, the mine ventilation control system consists of local systems controlling the concentration of noxious gases in the air currents of various branches of the ventilation network, and of local systems controlling the air flow rates through those branches in which it is not necessary to regulate the concentration of any noxious gases. With respect to the noxious gas concentrations, the manipulated variables are air flow rates, while with respect to the air flow rates - the manipulated variables are aerodynamic resistances of the corresponding branches. Since there is an interdependence between the air flow rates in the ventilation network branches controlled through changes in aerodynamic resistance, the total system of mine ventilation control falls in the class of multivariable systems. The treatment of individual branches of a controlled ventilation network as separate plants presupposes an absolute autonomy of local systems, which is an untenable concept. The present paper is an attempt to break up the multivariable control system of the noxious gas concentrations and the air flow rates into autonomous (mutually unrelated) local control systems. The plant discussed is a ventilation network of arbitrary configuration with a single main axial fan. Because of the complexity of the problems involved, the multivariable control system of noxious gas concentrations and air flow rates has been described as linear, with constant and lumped parameters.

The paper presents results of an experimental study on the axial load bearing behavior of vibratory driven full displacement piles in comparison with impact driven and cyclic quasi-static installed piles in dense sand. The test setup and the measurement devices used to this end are explained. Subsequently, the results of the axial loading like load settlement curves are shown and the impact of the installation method is interpreted. The results presented in this work are mainly based on three installation methods: test series one investigates axial behavior of vibratory driven piles, test series two describe the same cyclic pile installation process but without dynamic influence wherein a special test setup developed to install the piles cyclic quasi-static in the soil was used. A third test series carried out using the conventional impact pile driving method served the purpose of not only comparing the results against vibratory driving, but also aided in isolating the effects of dynamics inherent to the vibratory driving process.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of using a high-pressure roll mill (HPRM) to improve the separation efficiency of dolomite from apatite in downstream operations when treating high-dolomitic pebbles. High-dolomite samples from four phosphate mines were used for the test program. The research work plan included sample characterization studies; INSTRON tests to develop preliminary crushing data; high-pressure roll mill evaluations to determine crushing parameters, such as feed rates, rolls speed and gap, and applied torque, pressure and energy; and screen, microscopy, and flotation studies to assess dolomitelapatite separation efficiency. The results of the HPRM tests show that commercial products for all four mines can be obtained. Recoveries of 74-82% of the P2O5 and rejections of 46-83% of the MgO were reported with an specific energy consumption of 0.2-0.5 of that of a laboratory rod mill.

The Brazilian government announced in 2007 its plans to reactivate the nuclear program. As a result of this decision, a new nuclear power plant is already being built and there are studies dealing with, among other activities, the building of 4 to 8 new ones until the end of 2030. Such increase on the country?s uranium demand affects INB, the Brazilian state company that?s in charge of uranium supply. This paper describes scenarios predicted to the Brazilian nuclear industry for the next years and the INB plans to meet the country?s needs in terms of uranium exploration and production.

When selecting a method for monitoring crack growth in pipeline steel, the sensitivity or crack-size resolution plays a dominant role. Even though there are several visual and non-visual methods, the direct current potential drop (DCPD) method is very effective for monitoring crack growth because of its resolution. This method has been used for the past few decades and has gained increasingly wide acceptance in fracture research as one of the most accurate and efficient methods for monitoring the propagation of cracks. Furthermore, most R&D experience has proven that the electrical potential method can be used in most "aggressive" environments. For these reasons, the DCPD method was selected to design a testing machine to monitor corrosion fatigue crack growth. The use of finite-element modelling is shown to facilitate the application of the DCPD method for monitoring crack growth in steels. The 2D model calibration provided a good description of the test data and proved more accurate than the analytic Johnson's formula.

Mineral carrying rates across the pulp-froth interface in the range of 1.4-3.2 tph/m2 and bubble surface coverages between 7 and 22 %, have been determined in large rougher flotation cells operated under normal conditions. To evaluate these variables, measurements of bubble size distribution, bubble load and size distribution of particles collected by true flotation, were performed at different concentrators. A model for estimating the bubble surface coverage at the pulp-froth interface level as a function of bubble load, Sauter mean bubble diameter and particle size distribution of the mineral collected by true flotation, was developed. Bubble loadings in the range 24-70 kg/m3, bubble sizes between 1.5 and 3.2 mm and superficial gas rates between 1.2 and 2.0 emfs, were measured in copper rougher flotation cells under normal operating conditions. Estimated bubble surface area fluxes were in the range 31 to 62 cm2/s/cm2- Results of carrying rates and bubble surface coverage, at the pulp-froth interface, were significantly lower than the maximum carrying rate for the collection zone, indicating that in this case is difficult to achieve maximum carrying rate at the pulp-froth interface level. The main constraints regarding carrying capacity limitations are then related to the froth transport characteristics (i.e. cell design, froth residence time, froth stability, froth recovery). DURING the last fifteen years the progress made in the science of lithology has been of a very marked character. From being a miscellaneous collection of facts and observations regarding certain mineral aggregates seemingly incapable of systematic arrangement, it has become a most interesting and orderly department of science. The investigators who have brought about this great change have recorded the results of their labors, and placed at our service an extensive and varied literature on the subject. To this I have paid some attention, and partly from .studying it, partly from my own observations, I have wrought out a classification of original or crystalline rocks, which I venture to bring under the notice of the members of this Institute. The practical importance of the subject will be acknowledged when it is considered that rock species are not without their influence on the contents of the mineral veins which intersect them.
