A SERIOUS hazard which must be faced in some mines, though quite absent in others, is that of rockbursts. Bursts cannot be wholly avoided in such mines, but the hazard would largely disappear if they could be predicted. The problem of prediction resolves itself into that of measuring pressure in the mine and determining when that pressure nears a critical value. The geophysical approach to the problem lies in discovering some physical property of the rock, which varies with pressure, which can be measured for rock in place, and for which the indication of critical conditions is sufficiently definite and open scale. A physical property, suggested first in connection with earthquake pre-diction, is that of sub-audible snapping. It was argued that, as the pressure grows, the rock probably yields microscopically and that minute snapping occurs which is so faint as to be inaudible to the unaided ear. Experience has proved this to be the case. Following other earlier work begun early in 1939, experiments with this method were initiated at Lake Shore Mines in 1941, and equipment was slowly being developed in practice when, fortunately, it was found possible to by-pass this tedious development programme. Experiments with sub-audible snapping in mine rocks had been carried out by Dr. L. A. Obert of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and his associates over a period of about four years. An amplifier and a recorder were developed, each reasonably satisfactory in practice. Lake Shore Mines offers a tempting field for rockburst research. Dr. Obert was invited to test his equipment in this and other mines in Ontario and did so. As a result, he and the administrative personnel of the Bureau became interested in the Lake Shore experiments co the extent of most generously arranging for the manufacture of sets of their own designed equipment for use in this programme. The first three sets of recorders were ordered at once and were delivered in May, 1942. A second group of three sets, incorporating various improvements indicated by experience both in the United States and in Canada, reached Kirkland Lake in April, 1943. The pick-up devices, known as geophones, were made in the electronics laboratory at Lake Shore by Mr. Zack Gibbs, who has had charge of all the instrument development in this re-search.

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. It is proposed in this paper to deal with these three aspects of the recent developments in rock-drilling.*Re-written from a lecturette given during the First Ordinary Meeting, 1936.

IN providing 65,000 tons of broken muck per day for shovel operation in a large open pit copper mine, drilling equipment and efficient use of that equipment is of prime importance. To improve existing drilling efficiencies, a large electric rotary drill capable of drilling 12-in. holes was purchased in May 1955. At Chino 96 pct of the blasting is done with 12-in. holes because: 1) the large holes break the optimum amount of material to reduce trackshifting to a minimum, 2) better fragmentation is obtained from a relatively short column of powder, and 3) longer spacing results in greater tonnage broken per foot drilled. From 1955, when it was purchased, through October 1956, the rotary drill has drilled 95,701 ft at a rate of 167.4 per shift in various locations and types of ground encountered in the mine. (This includes moving time and all other delays while a crew is on the machine.) The machine has been worked two shifts per day, seven days per week, and has been available 68 pct of this time.

Recent developments in high torque hydraulic rotary rigs has lead to the construction of secant bored pile walls by rotary drilling methods in circumstances where earlier methods were difficult and in some cases impossible. The evolution of secant bored pile wall construction is described including classical, rotary drilled and continuous flight auger construction methods. The paper then details the restraints which have been created in recent inner city redevelopment, many of which were not relevant in the early days of the technique. Typical examples of walls are presented to show the adapatability and advantages of the secant bored pile wall method. A number of in-situ retaining wall construction techniques are then compared in detail with regard to relative cost, technical quality and practicality.

One of the responsibilities of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works is to provide a sewerage system for the metropolis of Melbourne which now contains over 2.5 million people. In providing this sewerage system it was necessary for the Board to embark on a large tunnelling programme some 20 years ago. As a result of this extensive tunnel construction programme, tunnel boring machines and shaft sinking methods have been developed to cope with the soft ground and soft to medium rock found in the southern and eastern areas of Melbourne where the majority of the recent tunnelling has been carried out. While in the last few years radical changes in construction methods have not been made, development has continued and improvements have been made, which have enabled the Board to extend the limits of the ground conditions in which it can efficiently construct shafts and also tunnels with boring Machines.

For several recent TBM tunnel projects, unexpected ground conditions have been encountered, causing extra cost, considerable delay, and in some cases major claims. Undoubtedly, insufficient and/or irrelevant site investigation and testing are among the main causes of such incidents. The purpose of this paper is to review the main investigations and tests relevant for hard rock TBM projects, with particular emphasis on the considerable development that has taken place over the last few years. Also, guidelines for defining optimum scope and extent of site investigations and testing are discussed, as well as the importance of adjusting the investigations and tests according to complexity of the ground conditions and project type.

Strata bolting/dowelling reinforcement techniques are being reintroduced into the mines of the National Coal Board. There are strong reasons for the selection of the full hole anchorage principle of bolting and for the development of the wood/resin dowel. There are strong reasons also for the measurement of strata bed separation as the method of assessing the effectiveness of a roof bolting system. There are several designs of bolts. Instruments have been developed for investigation and control purposes. Different drilling and bolting machines have been employed in trial sites. In addition comparative laboratory model work has been conducted on simple non-bolted and bolted systems.

For stockpile design, the flowability and structural interfaces are critically dependant on the stress conditions throughout the pile. Historically, the predictive methodologies for stress determination have been too conservative, which adds inefficiency to the stockpile reclaim interface selections, especially for live reclaim stockpile systems. In addition, accurate pressure profiling throughout stockpile is essential to correctly design the stockpile support structures, which are buried within the stockpile. Such buried structures include trestle legs or columns to support load-out conveyors or the roof of bulk storage sheds. Improved methodologies with respect to the development of the hoop stress condition which exists in material ædrawn-downÆ within the stockpile has been developed. This hoop stress approach has significantly improved the live capacity prediction to over 90 per cent accuracy and improved rathole structure prediction within live reclaim stockpiles. Additionally the methodologies in estimating the vertical and circumferential stress variation acting on buried stockpile structures have been significantly progressed, with experimental testing shown good agreement with the theory.CITATION:Williams, K C, Roberts, A W and Prigge, J D, 2013. Underground mining will disturb the natural equilibrium of the rock mass, causing significant stress redistributions in the vicinity of the excavation with corresponding horizontal and vertical displacements. Subsidence of the ground occurs when these displacements propagate from the mine opening, through the overlying strata, to the surface. Such ground movements may take either of two general forms: a sudden and sometimes violent collapse, or a more gradual and progressive ground movement. The former, characterized by localized failure of roof or pillar in old, shallow room and pillar workings, is rather unpredictable and difficult to analyze. As a result, most control measures are directed toward the latter type of movement, which is associated with the fracture and flow of the strata overlying longwall and high-extraction room and pillar systems, resulting in horizontal and vertical strains in the affected area. Such ground movements can often cause considerable surface disturbances ranging from simple land settlement to severe structural damage. Due to the increasing incidence of this phenomenon in more populated areas and the rising awareness of the problem, it has become necessary to establish a balance between the development of mineral resources and the protection of the environment and society. This paper presents a summary of the major findings derived from a substantial research effort on mining subsidence carried out, during the past few years, in the southern Appalachian coalfield. The research program encompassed the following major tasks: identification of the most significant factor influencing ground movements above mined openings, collection of subsidence case studies for the southern Appalachian coalfield, development of subsidence and strain prediction techniques for that region and initiation of a subsidence monitoring program in southwestern Virginia.

Industrial ecology provides a number of new challenges as well as opportunities for the industry. The development and growth in a particular industry should have a trend towards reduced energy consumption, reduced resource consumption, thereby reducing the cost of production. Technology management strategies will have a key role in achievement of these targets. The paper describes recent developments in technology management, importance of R&D and case studies on adoption of energy efficient & CO2 reduction technologies in metal industry in India. In the end suggestions for future are made.IntroductionInternational Energy Agency [1] has assessed that nearly one third of the World’s energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions are attributed to manufacturing industries. In case of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, the resource equality and product quality finally determine the energy share across the countries. In the overall, Iron & Steel industry accounts for about 19% of total industrial energy used. The saving potential for non-ferrous metals is estimated to be anywhere between 13 to 25 % of the energy consumed depending on the level of resource quality. The projections are that energy consumption worldwide in Industry sector would increase 1.8% per annum up to 2030 on average, and up to 2.5% in developing countries."

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

The Hercudet™ non-electric delay blasting cap system has exhibited outstanding performance and economic results in surface work. The versatility inherent in the system, which allows the combining of the built-in cap delays with the tubing delay (i.e.: the travel time of the gas reaction through the tubing), has resulted in outstanding blast results. Examples of blast patterns used, details of the blast design process, and recently-developed methods of use of Hercudet for surface initiation of detonating cord downlines are given in the paper.

Base Metal (Cu, Ni, Mo, Zn, Co etc.) analysis traditionally has been very slow in conventional analytical laboratories which can lead to additional costs being incurred in waiting time of drill rigs or mining excessively off-reef. Recent developments in the automation of analytical laboratories now allow for very rapid turn-around times for base metal analytical data which can help reduce such costs as well as reduce the unit costs of the analyses themselves. 2.0 CONVENTIONAL ANALYTICAL LABORATORY PRACTICE Conventional analytical laboratories are necessarily are very manual. Sample preparation is slow and laborious, samples are moved from stage to stage manually and, typically, all samples are processed in batches so a sample which is the first to be, say, milled has to wait for the complete milling of the batch before it advances to the next stage eg. mixed with wax prior to pelletising for XRF analysis. Inevitably this results in long sample data turn-around times for laboratories handling large numbers of samples. Manual sample preparation can only be accelerated by increasing staff which increases costs and can lead to additional errors being introduced. Cleaning of sample preparation equipment, eg. crushers and mills, between samples is essential to avoid cross-contamination between samples and this is slow and labour-intensive. In manual sample preparation the correct sample numbers staying with the samples is totally dependent on the efficiency of laboratory operators. It is extremely difficult to detect when errors have occurred due to the switching of sample numbers during the sample preparation stages. Running duplicates and QC samples at best is only partially successful in detecting when sample number switching errors have occurred. Errors of this nature and cross-contamination problems due to incomplete cleaning of sample preparation equipment tend to occur when laboratories are working at pressure due to high sample numbers and when supervisors are not present during 24/7 laboratory operations which is often required on plant process control laboratories. These problems are common to all conventional analytical laboratories and their magnitude is dependent on the level of control and efficiency of QC systems practised by individual laboratories. The disadvantages of conventional manual analytical laboratories can be summarized as follows:- 1. Labour-intensive which is costly especially when multiple shifts have to be used during 24/7 operations.

New techniques for the continuous sampling and analysis of mine air are expected to replace traditional methods used for the early detection of spontaneous combustion. It has been established that the rate of evolution of carbon monoxide is the earliest indicator of incipient spontaneous combustion. Two methods of continuous monitoring of this gas are available and are now in use in the UK collieries. The first is the UNOR infra-red gas analyser, which is flameproof and may be used underground; the second is a system of tube bundles, which permits air to be drawn from any critical point in a colliery and analysed on the surface. Each system has its advantages and disadvantages but both provide the colliery manager with far more information on the condition of his pit than could previously be obtained by spot sampling and laboratory analysis. This paper describes the two systems presently in use and assesses likely future developments.

The aim of this joint work between the French Coal Board and the Paris School of Mines is to be able to practically model the behaviour of a transverse drum cutting rock with picks. First a theoretical approach leads to the concept of cutting curves, giving forces and torque against penetration per drum revolution. Then experimental evidence, from full scale and reduced scale testing, validated and confirmed the theoretical shape of the curves. Finally practical applications are given, to improve the design or use of a shearer (or continuous miner). A micro-computer program is being developed to predict the cutting performances of a machine in certain conditions.

My topic, Recent Developments in the Design of Electric Mine Locomotives and Mining Machinery, does not require me to go into a general review of electricity as applied to the mining industry. Interesting as that subject always is, what I might say in regard to it, by way of introduction, would be unnecessary use of your time, since such facts are familiar to all. First, we will consider the recent development of the electric mine locomotive. We may well pause for a moment to reflect upon its importance to the coal-mining industry of to-day. With the dawn of the electrical age its advent was inevitable. Our practical interest is aroused not so much by the first crude effort as by the great efficiency attained during the 30 or more years since the electric locomotive made its first appearance. To judge accurately what it means to coal mining, and through coal mining to the industrial field at large, we would have to know how many of these locomotives are in use throughout the country and their aggregate daily performance, and then compare the results with what could be expected with other forms of power. Such data are lacking, but it requires no statistician to make it evident that the electric mining machine is a tremendous factor in modern progress, and that without it the work of the world could never have reached its present magnitude. Not only has the electric mine locomotive served its own special branch of usefulness, but incidentally it has solved in the main the whole problem of electric transportation. It is but a step from the triumph of a 25-ton locomotive leading a long train of loaded coal cars from a mine to the electrification of common carriers. We may or may not be near any great change in this respect. Economical reasons may hold it back for an indefinite period. But the fact remains that in the development of our mine locomotives we have met this larger emergency, in mechanical type and efficiency, whenever it may come.

INTRODUCTION Grinding mills have been used in the minerals processing industry for over 100 years. Their dimensions have grown continuously during this time. Besides increasing throughput rates of grinding plants due to the depletion of high grade ores, the lower specific in- vestment costs, as well as reduced operating and maintenance requirements are major reasons for this trend. When selecting new plant equipment one must consider that design principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today's equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger size of equipment. Modern calculation methods as for instance the Finite Element method already contribute considerably to the safe design of the huge equipment being built today and are a standard tool of the design engineers. More recently, modern computer programs are also being used in order to size the equipment to meet the process requirements. Today, two design principles are on the market - one which supports the weight of such a unit on trunnion bearings through cast conical endwalls and one which is supported through slipper pad bearings arranged at the circumference of the mill shell (Fig.1). The reason for the development of this alternative grinding mill design can be found in the past. During the sixties and seventies the growing sizes of ball mills with high LID ratios caused many mill failures due to cracked endwalls. The accuracy of the calculation methods as well as the quality standards for castings were not developed to a degree required for such kind of heavy equipment. One way to overcome these problems was the increase of the manufacturing quality standards as well as the introduction of the finite element method based on the analysis of the experience available. The biggest grinding mills being built today are large size SAG mills with cast conical endwalls and trunnion bearings (Fig.2). This is due to the fact that mill manufacturers who had come from the conventional ball mill design adopted these principles as well to their SAG mills. These grinding mills perform well without special concern to the operators. Other manufacturers overcame the problems as mentioned above by eliminating completely the heavy castings and trunnion bearings and the problems associated to it (Fig.1). This design was originally applied to ball mills for the mining and other industries. Due to the success of these shell supported ball mills, this design principle was also applied to SAG mills(Fig.3). Despite of the fact that the majority of today's grinding mills are built to the conventional design it is also interesting to have a look at this alternative. Principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today's equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger equipment if bigger mill sizes are realized only based on the pantograph principle. With growing grinding mill sizes, the mass and volume flows through the equipment increases rapidly. Thus it is very important not only to concentrate on the safe design of the structural components of the equipment but as well on the process requirements. The influence of the design on important process parameters of dry and wet grinding plants are discussed thereafter. It shall be shown how modern computer programs can assist in the optimization of the design of components in order to fulfil the operational requirements of such large size equipment. PROCESS REQUIREMENTS OF LARGE SIZE GRINDING MILLS Dry Grinding Mills The world's biggest ball mill is a dry grinding ball mill having a diameter of 6.2m and an overall length of 25,5m with a drive power of 11,200 KW or 15,000HP. This grinding mill dries and grinds gold ore at a rate of 500 tons per hour at a moisture content of up to 9,5%. As shown in Fig.4 this mill was built as a shell supported unit. In fact only this design principle allowed to meet the process requirement. This mill could hardly be built with cast conical endwalls due to the constraints of the trunnion bearings limiting the mill inlet. The following case shows how modern computer programs can help to meet the design criteria of the air system of large size dry grinding plants. A description is given of grinding practice on the Rand and of experiments made to improve that practice. The paper includes a description of the experimental plants and methods and the results obtained. THE first tube-mill on the Rand was put into operation in May, 1904, at the Glen Deep Mine. From that time onwards, tube-mills were added to various plants, although little was known regarding the capacity of a given tube-mill when working on banket ore. Within a few years, however, the so-called standard size (length of shell 22 ft. 0 in. diameter 5 ft. 6 in.) was generally used until the last year or two. Practically the only exceptions were about 30 tube-mills having a length of 16 ft. and a diameter of 6 ft., and a few open-end mills of the roller-supported type. Most of the information obtained during the last 15 years has been obtained with mills of the standard dimensions. The adoption of the tube-mill as an accessory to the stamp mill was rapid; and where 3 tube-mills were working on the Rand at the end of 1904, 244 were in use seven years later.1 By 1910, good practice provided 1 tube-mill for 20 stamps of 2000-lb. falling weight. The horsepower of the motors driving the tube-mills had increased from. 80 to 100 and then to 125 at this date. Broadly speaking, current practice at that date aimed at a final product of which 60 per cent. was suitable for sand treatment and 40 per cent. for slime. The sand grading was +60 mesh, 6 per cent.; +90 mesh, 25 per cent.; -90 mesh, 69 per cent.; and the slime grading -200 mesh, 2 per cent.; -200 mesh, 98 per cent.

ALUMINUM powder is a well-known article of commerce and in various forms has been marketed widely for use in paint, for pyrotechnic purposes and for exothermic mixtures. For a number of reasons, how- ever, aluminum powder has not been employed extensively in powder metallurgy, although a great many proposals along this line have been offered. Aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders oxidize readily upon exposure to air and the thin film of oxide (or hydroxide) thus formed is highly refractory, in that ordinary gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide do not reduce the oxide to metal at temperatures below the melting point of aluminum. It has been thought that the presence of these films of oxide on aluminum particles would interfere markedly in powder metallurgical work and a number of suggestions have been made, either for preventing the formation of the film through the production of the powders in inert or reducing atmospheres, or for the removal of the oxide by means of powerful reducing agents, including "nascent" or atomic hydrogen released from metal hydrides. 4 second and more serious difficulty in the use of aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders in powder metallurgy resides in the fact that during compression such powders tend to adhere or cold-weld to the die walls, thus interfering with the formation and ejection of a compact. A third difficulty, which has been encountered only with aluminum-alloy powders, is their hardness when compared with elemental aluminum. Certain of these powders are susceptible to age- hardening, which further hinders the formation of strong green compacts. These conditions are particularly true of atomized aluminum-alloy powders. Even in the annealed condition, plastic deformation of alloy powders under pressure is low when compared with unalloyed powders. This fact, coupled with the lower corrosion resistance of the alloy powders, is probably the significant factor in our failure to obtain strong sintered pieces. METHODS OF PRODUCING THE POWER Many methods have been proposed for manufacture of aluminum powder, only a few of which are used commercially. Several of the more important processes include: (I) atomization of the molten metal; (2) mechanical pulverization and other types of comminution; and (3) graining, in which molten aluminum is stirred during freezing. For pigment and certain pyrotechnic uses aluminum flake powder is desirable, because of its greater proportion of surface to volume; and large quantities of such material are made by a procedure that involves stamping or ball milling. From August 1962 to June 1976 Peko Mines Ltd. produced Gold Bullion at the Peko Control Mill using 18x24 Denver Mineral Jigs and strake tables. Gold ores treated during this period were obtained from Orlando, Juno and Ivanhoe Mines and from the Warrego Mine after 1974, all in the Tennant Creek Area of the Northern Territory. With the downturn in copper prices Warrego Copper ore mining ceased and the copper Smelter closed down in February 1974, Warrego gold ore continued to be treated in the Peko Concentrator.
