[When clays are mixed with water to -.,tee mud fluids for use in trilling wells for nil and --ac b ;l-,e rotary method the liquid mixtures have certain physical characteristics that vary with the quantity and size of their inherent solid particles. All naturally occurring clays contain variable quantities of particles of different sizes ranging from relatively coarse (sands) through -,.tedium (silt) to fine materials of colloidal dimensions. [This is the tenth in a series of retorts on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee e end the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report rave data on motor gasolines sold during .e winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report presents analytical data for 1,732 samples, representing the products of approximately 50 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both lame and stall suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. he number of samples, items, and brands comprising each groan), exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows: Regular price, 934 samples, 230 items, and 50 brands; premium price, 465 saris samples, 184 items, 40 brands; third-grade gasolines, 360 samples, 177 items, and of these terms as used in the surveys are follows: Sample: The individual supply of gasoline obtained at the filling station and analyzed in the laboratory.]

[Adequate supplies of suitable coal and coke are prime requisites in many industries, particularly those dealing with the utilization of mineral resources, recently interest has been focused on the possibilities of using electricity produced at Bonneville and Grand Coulee, Wash., in many electrochemical and electrometallurgical processes, in which core or some form of carbon is necessary in addition, discussion has been revived on the possibility of making iron and steel by the conventional methods employed in blast and open-hearth furnaces. The subject also is important at this time because of its relationship to industrial preparedness for national defense. A supply of coke from local sources on the Pacific coast is necessary in any program of production for strategic sufficiency of certain materials. An anal trio involving tae establishment of such industries should include detailed data on available supplies of coal, the quality and properties of the coke produced, and the technologic and economic factors involved in manufacture of echo and disposal of byproducts.]

As part of a comprehensive investigation of tie mechanism of desufurization of iron and steel by slags, the Blast Furnace Studies Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Institute of Technology-, University of Minnesota, has made a study of the forms in which sulfur occurs in blast-furnace slag. This report presents data on the three sulfides most important in iron smelting, namely, ferrous sulfide, manganous sulfide, and calcium sulfide. The tendency of these sulfides to form colloids in the molten slag was determined by an examination of quenched samples with an ultramicroscope. Vogt5/ conducted experiments on sulfide silicate melts and examined synthetic blast-furnace slags in a partly crystallized condition. His conclusions were that FeS, CaS, and bins, or isomorphous compounds, such as (FexCay)S and (MnxCy)S, were precipitated Prom the melt, depending on the composition of the slag. In all specimens sulfides were visible and were spherical.

In all specimens sulfides were visible and were spherical.Coloration of glass by sulfur also provides indirect information on the nature of sulfur in blast-furnace slags./ There seems to be a general agreement at present among the workers in the field of colored glasses that ferrous sulfide is a strong color producer. Colors that have been attributed to this compound include yellow, orange, brown, blue, and black. Apparently the ferrous sulfide is considered to be dissolved in these glasses. There is no indication that any of them have been examined for a colloidal phase.Lorenz 7/ investigated a single manganese slag in the glassy state and observed a Tyndall beam in an ultramicroscope. His conclusion was that either a manganese compound had precipitated in a finely divided condition or that metallic manganese had volatilized and penetrated into the slag as a vapor and thus formed colloidal particles."

[Gypsum is one of the most important nonmetallic c minerals, as is indicated by the fact that the United States consumed approximately 3,500,000 tons of natural and calcined gypsum in 1937. The building trades were the largest users required 2,520,000 tons of calcine for production of plaster, wall board, tiles, block, and various other insulating and building materials. The glass and ceramic industries and other manufacturers required an additional 126,000 tons. The balance was used in the uncalcined condition as retarder in Portland cement and or agricultural purposes.]

[A new record in fuel efficiency at petroleum refineries was established in 1939, when a the average B.t.u. requirements per barrel of crude oil processed declined to a new low of 557,000 B.t.u. (see fig. 1). The average fuel requirement per barrel of crude oil refined has remained virtually stationary for the past 3 years. Thus in 1937 the average was 562,000 B.t.u., in is it rose to 567,000 B.t.u., and in 1939 it declined to 557,000 B.t.u. she largest gains in fuel economy cane a decade or so ago on the widespread introduction of heat exchanges and pipe stills. In recent years many successful innovations in heat saving have been adopted, but the combined effect of those is completely masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. Some heat requirements are relatively inelastic, so the average consumption per barrel of crude oil refined tends s to increase when the operating ratio (crude runs divided by capacity) declines and vice versa. In 1939 crude runs to stills increased 6 percent (from 1,165,015,000 barrels in 1938 to 1,237,840,000 in 1939) compared with a decline of about 2 percent in 1938. The operating ratio in 1939 was 82 percent compared it&apos;s 78 percent in 1938.]

The literature dealing with the drilling of oil wells has become extensive during the last few years, and oil men can find much information relating to drilling muds in the technical literature of the petroleum industry. Although large tonnages of clay are used in preparing drilling mud (also known as drilling fluid), almost no information has been published to apprise the clay industry of the types of minerals used, with their requirements and limitations. It is from this point of view that the present report has been prepared.

[Approximately 7-1/2 million tons of subbituminous coals are mined annually in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, of which 50 percent probably reaches domestic consumers. The moisture of these subbituminous coals is high, averaging about 25 percent when they are mined. The coals are non-caking end stack to a variable degree when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. They are good domestic fuels, are considered to be smokeless in most furnaces, and have been used for many years in hand-fired domestic furnaces in which the practice is to employ large lutes for efficient combustion.]

The first use of the new cationic reagents indicated their superiority- as collectors in the flotation and a. agglomerate tabling of micas, feldspars, quartz, clay, and other acidic mineral, but the separation n of these minerals from each other necessitated study of the flotation of each mineral.]
