A series of single-fired (simultaneously detonated) explosions were conducted in an Arizona copper mine. The explosions spanned yields from 1700 to 13600 lbs (773 to 6169 kg) and were all detonated in an approximate 100 m by 100 m area. In order to quantify the effect of the mine free-face, the individual explosions were also detonated under three different emplacement conditions including at the free-face of the mine under normal burden, twice normal burden and fully contained. The purposes of these experiments were to investigate: (1) Generation of in-mine and regional phases such as Pg, Pn, and Lg from mining explosions; (2) Quantification of the relationship between yield and seismic amplitudes; (3) Quantification of the effect of confinement; and (4) Similarities and differences between single-fired waveforms and those from delay-fired explosions. Instrumentation was deployed at near-source (100-700 m) and in mine (1-5km) distances. Empirical scaling relations for the different shots in this test series were developed in order to quantify the effects of yield and confinement.

This study summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the Bureau of Mines numerous country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook. Because of the plethora of sources used in preparing these regional studies, it is impossible to cite all sources of information used in preparing this summary, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, the preparation of this study, and its related detailed studies on countries and areas, would be impossible without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or in publications of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations upon which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

This paper uses a simple model to illustrate the fact, widely known to information theorists, that the covariogram represents only half the information in the data used to construct it. It suggests and illustrates methods of putting the other half to use in describing mineral deposits. It also identifies applications in which the phase information is not needed.

Quartz dust is one of the most significant ongoing health concerns in coal mining today. Since initial verification of this health risk in coal mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during the early 1980’s, the Bureau of Mines has conducted numerous studies in underground mines to identify the sources of quartz dust and its fundamental characteristics. The most significant underground quartz dust source was found to be the continuous miner excavating rock. The percentage of quartz was also found to be higher in the smaller size fractions of the dust when significant amounts of rock was mined by the continuous miner. Furthermore, the quartz content in the continuous miner return remained fairly consistent at greater distances from the face. Another important factor speculated to affect quartz dust generation and its size characteristics is the morphology of the quartz bearing rock. The quartz content of dust between mines had notable differences with respect to the differences between kaolinite content in the dust. Low kaolinite content was associated with higher quartz content and increased size segregation of quartz into smaller dust particles, indicating that the free silica bonding matrix in the rock is most likely another factor responsible for quartz dust produced through mechanical comminution.

Seam gases are the most important atmos- phere contaminants in Australian collieries, their importance increasing with depth; C02 as well as CH4 may be important in intruded envir- onments. The generally high rank of the coal, with low moisture content, makes for abnormal dust production. The other contaminants are introduced and subject to better control, in- cluding products of spontaneous combustion. Due to market situations the generally lower rank and higher sulphur coals more prone to self heating are mined less. Future mining at greater depths should see greater problems with atmosphere contaminants.

In a coal mine there are many substances capable of ignition under certain circumstances, which can be placed in the following groups: ordinary combustible solids, dusts, liquids and vapours, gases, metals and plastics. There are many factors influencing ignition, including temperature, minimum ignition energy, particle size, explosion pressure level, rate of pressure rise, specific energy content and also explosive limit. Not all are applicable in every case. Frictional ignition of methane is an accident statistic of increasing concern and is considered in some detail. Practical measures that can be taken to reduce the incidence of frictional ignitions are considered, and also possible ways of ignition suppression.

"Ferromanganese crusts and nodules from the Amerasian basin of the Arctic Ocean are characterized by a unique composition compared to crusts formed elsewhere in the global ocean (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017). One of the most significant differences from global ocean crusts is the high detrital mineral content; mass balance calculations show that it may be as high as 35% in some samples (Hein et al., 2017).These Arctic Ocean Fe-Mn crusts also typically have three distinct megascopic layers, except for thin crusts; less commonly, four layers are noted for thick crusts. The age of initiation of Fe-Mn crust growth in the Amerasia Basin varies from 14.8 Myr to 0.7 Myr ago based on the Manheim and Lane-Bostwick (1988) Co chronometer, Be isotopes, and Th excess methods (Dausmann et al., 2015; Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017).Samples and MethodsFourteen Fe-Mn crust samples recovered on Russian and U.S. research cruises were chosen for analyses based on their morphology, composition, water depth, genetic type, and location in Amerasia Basin. Seven samples from four distant dredge sites along Mendeleev Ridge and seven samples from four locations on the Chukchi Borderland are included (Fig. 1). Dredge site water depths vary from 3850 to 2100 m with the deepest samples from the Chukchi Borderland. Many of the selected samples were described in previous publications (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017)."

"RÉSUMÉOn discute les principales sources de dilution au cours d’une exploitation souterraine. Les différentes définitions de la dilution en usage sont analysées. Une nouvelle méthodologie de calcul simplifiée et facile à utiliser dans la pratique minière est présentée. Cette méthodologie permet de remplacer les différentes expressions analytiques en usage par les deux facteurs de dilution seulement : un «facteur de dilution planifiée» lié à la sélectivité d’abattage au niveau de la planification minière et un «facteur de dilution additionnelle » permettant de juger de l’efficacité du contrôle de terrain et de la dilution pendant l’exploitation souterraine. L’application de cette méthodologie donnerait un outil nécessaire aux niveaux de la planification, du suivi des travaux d’exploitation et d’éventuelles études comparatives des coûts entre les différentes situations minières.ABSTRACTThe principal sources of dilution during underground evaluation and mining are discussed, then definitions of ore dilution currently in use are analyzed. These definitions vary depending on the authors. A new ore dilution evaluation methodology is proposed, replacing the ten different analytical expressions by only two: the planned dilution factor related to the stoping selectivity, done at the mine planning level, and the additional dilution factor related to the efficiency of the dilution control measures during stoping operations. The conclusion shows that the use of this methodology would be a definitive asset in planning, in stoping operations follow-up, and in future costs comparison studies between mining operations."

The Nokomai valley is located within the pumpellyite/actinolite facies of the Otago Schist, a regional scale metamorphic belt in Southern New Zealand. The Otago Schist is dominated by psammitic and pelitic greyschist with more subordinate greenschist, quartzite, marble, and ultramafics. Mining in the Nokomai, began in the 1860s, with sluicing of terrace gravels in the lower valley. Good gold is reported to have been won from unconformities within very weathered gravels lower in the terrace sequences, and particularly from within channels which dissect these older deposits. Gold was recovered from these terraces in the main Nokomai Valley, and two major tributaries (Victoria Gully and Bullock Head Creek). In the period 1885 - 1887 further gold was discovered in basal gravels beneath the Nokomai flats when the Hunter brothers sank two shafts and excavated a connecting drive to discover a lead 1.2 - 1.5 m thick. The Golden Lion Sluicing Company began mining in 1896 using an hydraulic elevator on the very 'tight' 1.8 - 2.4 m of basal gravels. This operation was followed by the Nokomai Gold Sluicing Company whose average return grade was >485 mglm3 until mining ceased in 1943 (Wopereis; 1988, 1989). A quartz vein, Commissioners Reef, was worked for small production at some time during the 1920 - 1930 period, until fault termination of the vein ceased production.

This paper describes several sources of external dilution affecting the stope walls during underground sub-level and bench stoping. Factors which control ground behaviour such as the geometry of the openings, the influence of geological discontinuities, stress re-distribution and blasting practices are discussed. Crown stope instability due to stress concentrations induced by changes in the excavation geometry, is discussed and the most efficient ways to sequence blasting within a stope are analysed. Effects of undercutting by blasting, blast damage in the near field and cut-off slot blast designs are analysed. The influence of dynamic loading on the exposed walls as well as the practice of blasting fill passes within stope crowns are discussed.

This presentation discusses the necessary ingredients for the creation of an acceptable credit structure, i.e., the structure that enables the borrower to attract the funding from different groups of lenders. As the amount of debt in the capitalization of new projects increases, it becomes quite critical that the mining venture sponsors obtain funding in a manner which maximizes the project economics. Attention normally is focused on the inherent operating cost characteristics of a venture such as the cost of mining, milling, transportation, smelting, and refining. The projected costs are derived from lengthy feasibility studies often taking millions of dollars and years to prepare. For a variety of reasons as the amount of equity directly provided by the sponsors declines, the balance must be made up from external credit sources. As a result, once the project becomes operational, debt service requirements assume crucial importance. For most new ventures, in the early years of production, the total amount of periodic debt amortization charges together with the projected interest expenses equals or exceeds the total operating cost. Utmost care must be taken, therefore, to reducing these costs which will then increase the chances for the implementation of the project. Project sponsors must carefully evaluate different funding sources in terms of their potential economic impact and, concurrently, evaluate alternative credit structures in order to be able to attract the selected funding vehicles. In this presentation I will discuss credit sources in the order of their relative appeal; i.e., from the standpoint of maximizing rates of return to the project owners. The tenor of the credit, that is the period from signing a loan agreement to the time of last repayment under the loan agreement, is undoubtedly the most important variable in evaluating the attractiveness of debt sources. Therefore, I will begin by discussing debt sources with the longest maturities and will end with a description of credits with relatively shorter tenors. The availability of different funding possibilities will naturally depend on the geographic location of the proposed venture, the creditworthiness of the borrower and the sponsors, the project economics, and finally the actual liquidity conditions in the capital markets at the time that the funds are committed. U.S. LONG-TERM DEBT MARKET - PUBLIC OFFERINGS AND PRIVATE PLACEMENTS The long-lived nature of most mining projects dictates that the majority of the mine financing be raised from long-term sources. In today's world capital markets U.S. debt issues probably carry the longest maturities available. The maturities can range from 5 to 40 years. Various types of long-term corporate debt instruments can be differentiated from one another by their terms, seniority as to claims against the assets of the issuer, legal form, and whether issued privately or through a public offering. The terms of these debt issues vary widely. For example, the interest rate which is typically fixed at the time of issuance, is determined by the credit quality of the issuer, the maturity, the average life, the seniority of the debt, the quality of control covenants or type of assets pledged as security, and other exogenous factors such as: economic policy, general level of interest rates and cur-rent level of financing activity. The entire principal amount of the debt may be due and payable at maturity (known as a "bullet" maturity) or, more typically, through periodic repayments in equal or staggered amounts. Almost all such debt issues allow for prepayment at the option of the issuer, but require varying amounts of repayment penalties. Disbursements are made over a relatively short period after signing of the debt documentation which may not coincide with the actual funding needs of the project. Financial covenants can be quite stringent, covering areas such as the issuer's financial leverage, working capital, payment of dividends and other distributions, merger and acquisition activities, and limitations on the disposition of property. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 4th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 3rd edition (1960) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstrate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Re- view. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 3rd edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these, of course, are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 11th annual meeting in 1975, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geo- logical and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications. (New Publications of the Geological Survey, U.S. Geological Survey, Washington, D.C. 20242) and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, U.S. Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213). The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, and 1970. Three other major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, and Mineral Trade Notes. The latter is particularly good for news of foreign developments. Accidental explosions in coal mines are due to various causes, but many of them can be directly attributed to coal dust; others that probably in no way depend on dust as a primary cause are propagated, greatly intensified, and made more disastrous by the presence of coal dust. The fact that coal dust in a bituminous mine will explode as a result of a fire-damp explosion has been generally accepted for many years, but the belief has also been held by many that coal dust is not in itself dangerous when unmixed with an explosive gas. Therefore, in past years little attention was given to dust in mines free from fire damp, and many disastrous explosions have resulted from lack of knowledge of the danger from coal dust. In the explosives gallery and experimental mine of the Bureau of Mines experiment station, Pittsburgh, Pa., it has been proved repeatedly and conclusively that coal dust will explode violently when no inflammable gas is present. PROPAGATION OF DUST EXPLOSIONS A coal-dust explosion is an extremely rapid burning or combustion of the coal particles. Their burning consists essentially of the combination of the hydrocarbons in the coal with the oxygen of the air, a process that generates heat and flame and produces hot gases and water vapor. These gases and vapors have a volume many times that of the original coal particles; thus they exert an outward motion and pressure which constitute the explosive wave. When fine particles of coal are suspended in the air, each particle is surrounded by the oxygen of the air, and thus is well placed to oxidize or burn rapidly whenever the temperature is high enough. If some particles are ignited from any cause they will fire others, and the combustion will extend from particle to particle with extreme rapidity wherever enough coal dust of sufficient purity is present.

MAGNESIA refractories and magnesium metal are both essential war commodities. The need for magnesium, which had just made its debut as a commercial metal a few years before the outbreak of the present war, is widely known because this new and valuable light metal has already received much publicity. Less widely known but equally important in the war effort are magnesia refractories. They are indispensable to the efficient functioning of the great metallurgical plants producing steel, nickel, copper, and other metals, where, because of their resistance to extreme high temperature and chemical attack, they are used in lining the furnaces, which are operated at a white heat. The demand for refractories in the metallurgical industries rose rapidly upon the outbreak of war, and now, in consequence of the continued great expansion under way in the manufacture of steel, nickel, copper, and other metals, the need for magnesia is greater than ever. Since 1915, part of the Canadian requirements of basic refractories has been supplied from the deposits of magnesitic dolomite in Argenteuil county, Quebec. The products from these deposits are excellent for many uses, but the magnesitic dolomite has too high a content of silica and lime to be used in making a type of magnesia brick required in nickel converters, and in the roofs of reverberatory furnaces used in the copper and steel industries. There is now a large and growing demand in Canada for bricks and shapes for these uses. This demand has always been supplied from the United States. Makers of these products in the United States, in turn, formerly imported most of the necessary high-grade, dead-burned magnesia from Austria and Manchuria. Not only are these sources closed, but refractory chrome ore from the Philippines is no longer available and chrome refractories may have to be in large part replaced by magnesia.

"Explosives used in blasting operations, natural and anthropogenic sources such as septic systems,fertilizers, and decomposing vegetation can potentially contaminate groundwater with nitrate in thevicinity of construction sites and make identification of blasting impacts difficult. Blasting operationsfor a private construction project in Windham, New Hampshire were indicated as the source of water quality impacts to private drinking water wells prompting the New Hampshire Department ofTransportation (NHDOT) to implement a proactive approach to limit the potential for impacts fromblasting for ongoing NHDOT projects. NHDOT has developed a baseline drinking water monitoringprogram designed to detect potential impacts and to ensure alternative drinking water is providedthroughout the construction phase of projects. In 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) andNHDOT began a study to determine the source and fate of nitrogen compounds near blasting sites using a combination of isotopic, time series, geochemical, hydrologic, and geologic data. Approximately 1.75 million cubic yards (1.33 cubic meters) of rock were removed by blasting in several locations for roadway construction at a major highway construction site in southern New Hampshire."

The Dachang tin field with more than one hundred million tonnes of ore at 1% tin and 3% Zn is one of the largest tin fields in the world. It comprises five carbonate replacement tin deposits, of which the Changpo deposit containing about 80 million tonnes of ore at about 1% tin is the largest deposit. The deposit, hosted by middle Devonian limestone, argillaceous limestone and black shale, is genetically related to the Longxianggei granite.The oxygen, hydrogen and carbon isotope data of minerals, rocks and fluids suggest a magmatic fluid which evolved during the crystallization of the Longxianggei granite. Mass balance calculations show that the depletions observed in 180 and 13C values of calcites from the ore bodies to the country rocks were due to continous isotopic exchange reactions between the magmatic fluid and the marine limestones at different W/R ratios and between 300 and 600¦C.

Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. In gold mining in Australia, the subsampling tool is usually a cone splitter.Other sources of error, including delimitation error and bias (systematic error) in the subsampler are often assumed to be negligible or ignored for being too difficult to QC.This paper describes actual sampling errors and error mitigation based on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of surface and underground reverse circulation drill sampling at a high-nugget gold mine at Sunrise Dam, Western Australia.CITATION:Carswell, J T and Sutton, K, 2014. "IntroductionSULPHUR is a constituent of many industrial products. It is part •of almost anything we eat, wear, or use. In fact, sulphur is so important that there has been an increasing tendency in recent years to measure industrial growth in terms of sulphur consumption.The uncertainty of obtaining adequate supplies •of elemental sulphur from the Frasch-mined domes. of Texas and Louisiana in the United States led all countries in 1950 to seek alternative sources of supply of this necessary element.Canadian industry has been supplied, for many years, with most of its sulphur requirements by United States Frasch-mined sulphur. World demand for this sulphur has necessitated the imposition of controls on its distribution, as production has not kept pace with demand. Until the third quarter of 1950, Canadian manufacturers of pulp and paper, heavy chemicals, explosives, and textiles •experienced little difficulty in obtaining their needs of elemental sulphur from the United States. However, at that time, low producers' stocks and declining reserves threatened to reduce shipments from producers, with the prospect of a continuing shortage for some time.
