Glencore Technology (GT) has over four decades experience supplying stainless steel cathode plates (“cathode plates”) to the electro-refining and electro-winning industry. Cathode plates are typically the single biggest capital investment in a refinery. Refineries may view cathode plates as fixed asset or consumables depending on their operational characteristics. This paper examines the issue of cathode plate life and the strategies and philosophies used by different plants in the management of their cathode plate asset. Some plants operate with their original plates after more than 20 years. Others accept high turnover and regular maintenance as normal operating practice. Reference data are provided on plate life for various operating plants including benchmark plants achieving best-practice plate life and operating cost. The role of the electrode handling equipment on cathode plate longevity is also examined, including latest developments in Cathode Stripping Machine, robotic copper stripping, and full-automation production cranes. The ability to identify and manage the population of plates in service is also critical for maximising plate life and minimising its overall operating cost. This paper discusses a novel and unique RFID system for tracking and managing cathode plate inventory. INTRODUCTION Permanent cathode plates The adoption of permanent stainless steel cathode electrodes in the electro-refining of copper was the most significant process development since the first commercial electro-refineries were built in the late 19th century. It provided significant improvement over the labour intensive and complicated starter sheet system. Copper grows over the permanent cathode blade for a number of days before being stripped, and the permanent cathode can be returned straight back to cells for the next cathode cycle. Glencore Technology (formerly Mount Isa Mines (MIM), then Xstrata Technology) has been manufacturing permanent stainless steel cathode plates from the late 1970s with the birth of ISA PROCESS™, and the Kidd process that came one decade later. Invented and commercialised by Mount Isa Mines, the ISA PROCESS™ was first implemented into Copper Refineries Limited (CRL), Townsville, in 1978. The KIDD PROCESS by Falconbridge evolved in the 1980s and was first implemented into the Kidd Creek Tankhouse, both operations converting from traditional copper starter sheets.

"Recently, smelting reduction of chromium ore in BOF has been actively investigated as a key unit process for an innovative future stainless steelmaking. The prominent feature of this new process route is energy and process saving, and production cost saving. The development is already in the midst of application to the commercial production, however there still remain the following key technologies to be established for the full use of the process. One is a speed up of the reduction of chromium ore to match with sequential continuous casting, and the other is efficient combustion of carbonaceous materials in BOF to reduce their consumption, and hence to assure the steel quality. High degree of post combustion technology and new charging technology, i.e., ore-coal-flux-oxygen mixed injection, could be effective for those two subjects. In 2000 or beyond, the new process would have become quite popular owing to the establishment of those key technologies.Introduction Since stainless steel was invented, its production has continued to expand because of its attractive combinations of functions of excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, a pleasing appearance, and a wide range of strength levels. New types of stainless steels as well as new applications are continually being developed.Compared to the production of ordinary steels (1), stainless steel production (2,3) shows steady growth worldwide, while the former production remains on the same level, as Figure 1 shows. It can be estimated that future production would show further growth since materials consumer demands are more fashionable, or more functional, which could be satisfied by stainless steels.Thus market needs would be met, if it could be produced with reasonable production cost. The emergence of an innovative production technology is then potentially requested as VOD and AOD processes have emerged, which has saved substantial production cost. This paper describes a possibility of a future stainless steelmaking process, which uses the in-bath smelting reduction of chromium ore in BOF, and which would save production as well as energy cost."

The commonly used stainless steels, their properties and uses are briefly discussed.Two specific topics are then explored in more detai's to highlight development areas, the potential of which has been largely unexploited in mining milling, refining and smelting operations. The high strength to weight ratios achievable in austenitic stainless steels has been widely used in the transport industry to design high integrity light weight vehicles,especially railway carriages. This use has rarely been extended into other structural areas where highly aggressive environments could make stainless steel a cost effective material compared to protected carbon steels. The recently developed weldable ferritic steels are described and their potential in materials handling discussed. Particular attention is paid to 3CR12, a nominal 12% Chromium, titanium stabilised steel finding wide acceptance in the mining industry.

In the field of stain-less steels, there are about forty different types of alloys that are used where corrosion is a •problem.A stainless product is ordinarily selected because it offers one or more of the following qualities:(1) Resistance to corrosion (2) Resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (3) Good mechanical properties at room temperature (4) Good mechanical properties at high or low temperature (5) Attractive appearance (6) Ease of maintenanceToday we are interested in discussing the stainless steel family of alloys because of their .ability to resist corrosion. We• will not try to explain the Theory of Corrosion. Let us assume that, when surface potential and oxide formations are properly controlled, iron will resist attack in various chemi.cal solutions. The addition of alloying elements to iron does this for stainless steels. The principal stainless alloys used by various Canadian industries are listed in the accompanying Table."

Local communities are undertaking an increased role in mine project decision making processes, associated with growing pressure and expectations from regulators, financiers and the general public. This is particularly evident in international projects within developing economies. Environmental and social issues are often complex. Solutions demand difficult choices and trade-offs between sustainable development dimensions: economic growth, social equity and environmental integrity. Proactive stakeholder engagement can play a critical role in assisting decision-makers in determining the operational reality of sustainable development by jointly exploring project trade-offs between proponents and affected stakeholders. Good stakeholder engagement has other potential benefits, ranging from reduced financial risk due to regulator delays, legal disputes or negative publicity to increasing market share through good public image. Approaches to consultation and disclosure have changed from short-term regulatory based focuses, to longer-term, strategic tools for relationship building, proactive risk management and new business identification. Approaches to consultation form a significant opportunity to contribute to overall social sustainability. This paper discusses, based on authorsÆ experience, the broader concept of stakeholder engagement and its contribution to social sustainability of the mining industry. The focus is on key considerations for an effective stakeholder engagement. Three case studies outline how broad based, proactive stakeholder engagement can contribute to improved operation and overall sustainability. The case studies include: a greenfields project in Ghana; a long-term mine in Australia; and an open-pit mine in Vietnam.

This builds trust relationships, which are essential to ensure future decision-making processes are streamlined.Often neglected is a company’s obligation to select the correct team to represent its values and mission. The company requires representation that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to its operations and people, the safety and health of the community and environment, and most importantly, represents the decision makers. Stakeholders need to believe that the engagement process is genuine and that the company representatives are aligned towards targeted outcomes that will benefit all stakeholders in some way.Among others, stakeholders include shareholders, staff, families, community, service and supply providers, regulators, land managers and the political/financial framework. Depending upon the mineral product, stakeholders may include ports, international offtake clients and those along the route. New stakeholders continually evolve during mine life, and the engagement process requires an investor–community–public relations (IR/CR/PR) team to anticipate change and actively scan perception and chatter.Successful communication is more than delivering a message; it is about engaging stakeholders and confirming the feedback loop to ensure the correct message is communicated and the relationship is strengthened.The nature of the mining company’s branding and the public’s perception of company intentions will dictate whether there is willingness to allow the company to follow its desired path. A people-centric, systematic approach that involves different stakeholders is considered necessary to successfully address changes associated with modernizing the South African mining industry. In this paper we discuss the inclusion of various South African mining industry stakeholders, particularly the employees, in equipment design and development processes. Data was acquired through a literature review and inputs from South African mining industry stakeholders through focus group discussions, interviews, and an online survey. It was suggested that some of the areas that could be improved by the inclusion of employees in the process are design quality, ergonomics, equipment acceptance by the workforce, safety, efficiency, skills, insight into context of use, and early design iterations and identification of problems. Among the issues considered to be barriers to inclusion were lack of buy-in, lack of resources, difficulty in manufacturers accessing the mines, difficulties in involving too many people, intellectual property concerns, and unavailability of mine employees due to their key responsibilities. Identified critical factors in the equipment design and development process include iterative design, stakeholder participation throughout the process, needs analysis through consultation, and change management. A guideline was developed for worker inclusion in equipment design and development that could be used by the South African mining industry. The study identified several economic and social benefits of including stakeholders in the early stages of design and development. It is recommended that the South African mining industry considers using the developed guideline.

Mining projects draw together stakeholders with various degrees of experience in managing and assessing financial risk. When this risk is not fully appreciated or quantified, the potential for making decisions not suited to investor requirements is significantly increased. A feasibility study provides key information on project development potential, requiring detailed technical investigations with thorough financial analysis. Centaur Mining and Exploration (CME) owned and operated Cawse Nickel Operations (CNO), one of three Australian projects to develop and process vast amounts of near surface nickel resources. A technical ædue-diligenceÆ and æbankable feasibility studyÆ confirmed the large resource base, newly applied yet tested technology and relatively low unit costs would produce nickel in the lower half of industry operating costs. A number of production variables including capital requirements, delayed start-up, nickel grade, processing, maintenance and product output were outside the feasibility estimate. This was combined with exchange rate fluctuations and lower Ni prices. The inability to generate adequate cash flow and service debt repayments ultimately led to receivership and liquidation of all assets. Following the sale of CentaurÆs gold and nickel divisions, $A 784 million remained outstanding to creditors. This paper aims to define key issues leading to CNOÆs collapse by reviewing feasibility parameters, valuation methodology and project development. Some methods of assessing project viability are discussed with the aim of increasing stakeholder risk awareness.

Scientists show that polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides from deep sea mining contain valuable metals. These metals have the potential to overcome future shortages of supply. Hence, companies, government agencies and industrial associations increasingly evaluate deep sea mining as a promising supplement of land mining. Technologies to extract, exploit, transport and smelt polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides industrially are still in conceptual stage and not sufficiently advanced for operation. According to the International Seabed Authority, large scale exploitation would require a successful pilot mining test in order to demonstrate e.g. the technological feasibility but also the conservation of environmental systems services. At the same time, NGO´s and a some scientists point out that large scale extraction of polymetallic nodules and massive sulfides could disturb the habitat of benthic organisms, with unknown long-term effects. Aside from the direct impacts of mining, indirect consequences about leakage are likely. In the oral presentation I will show how companies, government agencies, scientists and association/interest groups perceive and assess economical/technological, social and environmental risks and opportunities of deep sea mining. In order to analyze the perspectives of each stakeholder group on deep sea mining, we conducted 15 interviews with four stakeholder groups and a large scale survey (n = 500, return rate = 13 %) in Germany. We used the concept of sustainability with its economical/technological, ecological and social dimensions for the interpretation of the results. EVERY new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were intro¬duced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose. Introduction Stamp-Milling and amalgamation is, perhaps, one of the oldest processes of recovering gold from its ores. Many papers, theses, and textbooks have been written on the subject of stamp-milling practice in general, but, to my knowledge, there have been no publications describing the modern stamp-mill as designed, developed, and operated in Nova Scotia. Although it may be said that the gravity stamp-mill is the most primitive, and perhaps the crudest, crushing machine in existence, it is at the same time the most satisfactory all-round milling and amalgamating device yet contrived. Originating in Saxony, and used in North America first in Virginia and Georgia, the stamp-mill, in a primitive form, later found its way to California and Colorado. Here, it speedily developed from an affair of wood shod with iron, and operated with the crudest gearing, to substantially its present form. Briefly, it consists (see Figure 1) essentially of a series of hammers (the stamps), which fall upon a mixture of ore and water contained in a cast-iron box (the mortar). The resulting crushed ore (the pulp) is splashed out through a screen on the front of the box. For some years after the discovery of gold in Nova Scotia, in 1861, the ? arrastra and Chilean mill were used to recover the gold from the rich ores. The stamp-mill followed, and various types were used, principally the California and Gilpin County types. Then, in 1895, Mr. M. R. O'Shaughnessy, one of our foremost amalgamators, conceived the idea of a new type of stampmill, which has since become standard in Nova Scotia gold mines. This mill, unique in its design and operation, is specially adapted for the most efficient extraction and recovery of gold as it occurs in our Nova Scotian ores. It is commonly known as the Underwater Feed type, as opposed to the usual Overwater or Top Feed type, and it may be rightly termed The Nova Scotia Self-Classifying Stamp Amalgamation Mill. It is conceded by experienced mill-men that it is superior to any other type of mill for recovering the very coarse and granular gold typical of the ores of this Province. The particular installation and practice to be described in this paper is that of the Guysborough Mines, Limited, at Goldenville, Guysborough county. Emphasis will be laid on certain operating innovations of extreme simplicity and high efficiency.

MR. R. V. NEILY stated that he had at one time operated at Goldenville. The practice and results are much the same now as in the olden days. Inside plates were then found to be a source of trouble and had been removed. At the Libbey mine, Queen's county, the sulphides carried considerable gold, and $45.00 to $60.00 per ton had been recovered from the concentrates by roasting and chlorinating. Later, concentrates were treated with bromocyanide. Following that practice, a cyanide leaching plant was installed, which did not require concentration of the tailings. Cyanidation brought a recovery of around 95 per cent, with but $300 worth of plant. In Nova Scotia, the ore of each locality presents an individual problem of its own as to treatment required. Ma. W. B. Timm stated that, in the majority of Nova Scotia gold ores, more than 75 per cent of the gold content is free-milling and, naturally, stamps are most efficient for collecting and amalgamating this gold. In Ontario and the West, they had got away from stamps, and perhaps the main reason was that the supply of battery-men, who came from Nova Scotia, had died off. Ball-mills had been installed, which required smaller space and handled large tonnage, even though, as far as amalgamation goes, the stamps were probably more efficient. If concentration is to be done, ore from stamps is usually in better shape for recovery in passing over the tables, as there is no slime. With the ball-mill, flotation is necessary. The better practice, undoubtedly, is to take out what gold is possible before it is all smashed up, as in the ball-mill, though recent developments in the ball-mill make it possible to trap and take coarse gold directly from the mill. In this way, cyanidation is speeded-up, due to saving of the time the coarse gold would take before going into solution. PROFESSOR A. E. FLYNN found it unusual in these days to read anything in favour of the stamp mill, and thanked Mr. Henderson for the excellent paper in which he upholds the stamps and backs his opinion with facts from actual operations. For the typical Nova Scotia ore, containing coarse gold, stamps are un¬excelled. It used to be said that the virtue of stamps is that they brighten the gold for amalgamation. Although this saying is almost classical, it is not true, for gold is never brighter than in the native, untouched state. Any hammering that gold gets makes it more difficult to amalgamate.

IN 1926 I had occasion to make numerous measure-ments with a Pitot tube. The differential gage was mounted in a box, and since the work entailed setting upon girders, staging, and flues of various shapes and slopes, much time was generally expended in getting the box blocked into the level position. This inconvenience was so considerable that I devised the gage stand shown in the accompanying illustration. The gage is bolted to the board seat, the bolt per-mitting unlimited adjustment in the plane of the paper. The seat, carrying the gage, revolves on trunnions, per-mitting unlimited adjustment in a second plane, per-pendicular to the first. Consequently, the stand may be stood up, hung by one corner, leaned against some-thing or simply laid down, and the gage levelled from any position. On uneven surfaces, where the stand naturally rests on only three of its legs, it may be swung in the manner peculiar to the tripod, bringing the center of gravity within the triangle formed by the legs, thereby providing a firm set-up. Rubber stoppers under compression were found to give sufficient friction to hold the seat in the desired position.

Comparative study between standard and BigFLUX matrices for high intensity magnetic separation pre-concentration (WHIMS) stage for iron ore. The evaluation was carried out on GAUSTEC’s pilot equipment for samples from Viga Mine’s operation. Samples in different feed iron content on rougher stage were evaluated in 46 experiments with matrix variation. The analisys compared chemistry, mass recovery and metallurgical recovery results to define the most efficient matrix to use in a pre-concentration stage.

A five-year effort by the ASTM subcommittee E10.14 on uranium resource evaluation has culminated in the approval of E901-82, Classification System for Uranium Resources (ASTM Standard E901-82, April 1983). The standard classification was prepared with participation of representatives from the US Department of Energy, the US Department of Interior's Geological Survey and Bureau Mines, utilities, and consultants. The classification a resource is based on level of knowledge and the economic producibility of the resource at a given time. Alphanumeric identifiers are used rather than words to avoid confusion with existing terms, definitions, and classifications. An example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that remain infixing the classification a given uranium resource include uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

The example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. The success of any blast is dependent on the accuracy of the blast design and the field controls used on the shot. This point cannot be over emphasized because when the geometry is not measured and/or field controls are not properly implemented, it can often have devastating effects on the final blast results. Thus drilling accuracy, tiont row burden control, explosive confinement, energy distribution, explosive selection, timing and structural geology become critical parameters in the design of successful blasts. Understanding the actual dynamics of the blast and why certain results were achieved is the fast step in optimizing a blast design. As stated by R. Frank Chiappetta, “Of all the blast monitoring systems available today, high speed videography still remains as the best stand alone instrumentation system for blast diagnostics.” Over the past years I have analyzed hundreds of blasts using either high-speed lowcams (500 frames per second) cameras or standard digital (30 frames per second). These analyses confirm, without a doubt, that shot geometry, in combination with structural geology, is the most important factor in overall blast results. Drilling accuracy is the single most important component in efficient blasting. Having equal mass associated with an equivalent energy is the basis in which blasts are designed. When drilling inaccuracy or borehole deviation occurs, not only is the energy unevenly distributed, but the basis of all design calculations becomes invalid. Over the past several years, quarry and mining operations have employed the use of boretracking measuring devices to measure borehole deviation and hole toe locations. In cases of operations using top hammer drills, it was discovered that the amount of deviation was significant and far greater than they believed they had. Set up error, improper drilling techniques and bit wear were some of the contributing factors. Through video anaysis of boretracked blasts, blast results were directly linked to drilling ..accuracy. The comparisons here took into account blast design, energy factors and hole sequencing.

In cases where coarse gold is present in a deposit, it is usual to use the screen fire assay (SFA) method to analyse the samples. There is no doubt that this method is more accurate than the standard fire assay (FA) and reduces the risk to have a systematic bias. Nevertheless, the difference between the analytical errors of both methods can be glossed over when the overall sampling error is added to obtain the measurement error. In that case, the advantage of the SFA cannot justify its higher cost.The current paper attempts to address this question in the case of a gold ore deposit with visible coarse gold in various sampling situations (drill core sampling in exploration, blasthole or chip sampling in mining exploitation). The overall measurement error is estimated taking into account the analytical error and all the sampling error components following the Pierre GyÆs theory of sampling.Firstly, only the last sampling stage is considered when the pulverised sample is processed either to obtain one analysis sample for a FA or to be screened and subsampled for a SFA. The calculated measurement error clearly shows the advantage of the SFA specifically in presence of coarse gold. Secondly, the half core sampling is studied to explain the observed discrepancies when controlling the second half core. Finally, the blasthole sampling is treated using in situ heterogeneity models to show that the relative advantage of the SFA is hidden by the large overall sampling error.In conclusion, the choice of the assaying method is discussed at the light of the overall measurement error and in accordance to the analysis objective.CITATION:Brochot, S, 2012. This chapter presents, in summarized form, standard procedures for making separations of minerals from their ores by the froth flotation process to produce marketable concentrates. These are typical mineral separations which are being made commercially with the reagents and conditions generally used in the mining industry. Typical separations are presented for 17 metallic and 11 nonmetallic ores. The review of each includes a brief description of the mineral and the particular problem presented, general market specifications for its concentrates, an outline of treatment method, and kinds and quantities of reagents usually employed. This chapter does not include de- tails about ore preparation (crushing, grinding, and classification), elements of ore and pulp transportation (conveying and pumping), or concentrate preparation for market (thickening, filtering, and drying). In each presentation it is assumed, if not detailed further, that the ore is ground to the economical point of liberation of the minerals to be separated. Specific information, such as ratio of concentration and recovery, that depends upon the grade of ore being treated is considered beyond the scope of this chapter. Effective flotation separations that produce marketable concentrates may produce widely varying results in terms of percent recovery and still be economically profitable operations. Details of plant practice on specific ores are presented in Chapters 16 and 17. In this chapter the chemical names of the reagents are given. The extent to which different reagents are used in flotation plants in the U. S. is presented in Chapter 4. A compilation of the various flotation reagents, their trade names, manufacturers, and use has been prepared by H. T. Spedden. ANTIMONY The principal ore mineral of antimony, stibnite (Sb2 S3), is generally found in the U. S. in ore bodies in association with other valuable minerals such as galena (Pbs), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), or tetrahedrite (3Cu2 S – Sb2 S3), The sulfo-salt minerals of antimony, such as tetrahedrite or pyrargyrite, are often associated with high silver values, so that the presence of antimony may indicate economic importance even though the actual antimony content is low.
