Papua New Guinea's mainland is dominated by a foreland thrust belt, which can be divided into two zones. The "body" zone is floored by Palaeozoic granites and metamorphics of the Fly Platform (Tasman Orogen). Underlying the "tail" zone is Papuan Plateau, rifted from the Tasman Orogen during Coral Sea spreading, and believed to underlie the Papuan Peninsula and Papuan Islands region (D'Entrecasteaux, Woodlark, Misima, Sudest, and Rossel Islands). Thrusting began in the Miocene and continues today in the crust below the "body" zone. The youngest known thrusted rocks in the "tail" zone are Pliocene in age. Recognition of foreland thrusting has major implications for petroleum prospectivity of the Papuan and North New Guinea Basins, mineral exploration prospectivity, and geological terrane identification in PNG.

Underground roof falls can have devastating effects on the safety of operations personnel, and equipment, and seriously impact production. Immediate steps are usually taken to danger off and secure the area while clean-up efforts are designed and implemented. A critical step, often overlooked due to production demand, is the determination of - why the roof fall occurred so that additional occurrences can be avoided in future developments or what measures can be taken to identify areas that have similar ?symptoms?? Forensic engineering includes the investigation of materials, products, structures or components that fail or do not operate/function as intended. The authors define forensics in ground control engineering as the study of evidence discovered while examining underground roof falls by applying expert observational techniques and established mining engineering principles to determine the probable cause, hypothesize solutions, and design engineering safeguards to prevent reoccurrences. Simply stated, the primary steps in the forensics of underground roof fall techniques are: ?Assess regional and local conditions prior to the event. ? Assess post-event conditions. ? Hypothesize plausible ways in which the pre-event conditions became the post-event conditions. ?Search for evidence that either denies or supports the various hypotheses. ?Apply engineering skill to relate the various facts and evidence into a cohesive scenario of how the event may have occurred. This paper details the proposed technique by utilizing a roof fall case study that required the examination of five primary factors: mine design parameters, excavation geology, method of excavation, method of support, and mining cycle times.

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced. In the last few decades, a considerable amount of effort was directed at accurately determining the coal pillar strength to use for safely designing coal mines. The outcome of this early work was the well known Obert-Duvall, Holland-Gaddy, Bieniawski, and Salamon-Munro equations for coal pillar strength. All of these equations were developed for, and were calibrated with, pillars in a large room-and-pillar area such that the loading could be determined using the "tributary-area" theory. In order to account for the abutment loads associated with full-extraction mining, the empirical methods have typically adopted a simple conceptualization of the abutment load through use of an "abutment angle." Short of a complete numerical or analytical analysis of the coal seam and surrounding strata, very little work has been Fretted toward refining the empirical analysis of pillar loading. It appears that the vast majority of the research has been directed at determining the pillar strength, the numerator of the safety factor equation, when the denominator of the safety factor equation, the pillar loading, plays an equally important role in pillar design. This paper will address the deficit of pillar loading research by exploring the accuracy of the empirical abutment load calculations using insight provided by an elastic overburden model, a laminated overburden model and field observations. Ultimately, it is determined that a constant abutment angle probably over-predicts the abutment load as the mining depth increases.

Discussion of the paper of. C. L. DAKE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1429 to 1436. A. C. LAWSON, Berkeley, Cal.-It appears that our bog-iron ores are due in a large measure to the activity of certain iron bacteria, and a paper dealing with this subject that makes no reference to that particular agency strikes me as rather curious. C. L. DANE, Rolla, Mo.-Mr. Lawson's criticism that this paper makes no reference to the activity, of iron bacteria is scarcely true. On p. 1430 I stated: "Certain bacteria precipitate iron by building the hydrated oxide into their body cells," and again, "There are many other means by which, under special conditions, iron may be precipitated in nature. Oxidation, evaporation of CO2, and iron bacteria have been held to be the most important." Thus the activity of bacteria receives as extended mention as the action of any other agency in precipitation of iron. The paper makes no pretense of covering exhaustively the origin of bog ores, but, as its original title suggested, refers to Some Principles Controlling the Formation and Distribution of Bog Iron Ores. Mr. Lawson seems to have entirely missed the main thesis of the paper, which attempts to establish some relation between glaciation and abundance of bog ores now forming. Unfortunately, I have no immediate access to the literature of the subject, but my best recollection is that the data regarding iron bacteria throw no light whatever on the cause of bog ores being so much in ore abundant within the limits of the glaciated regions, and being reported much less frequently from the tropics. This lack of data is suggested in the following (p. 1434): "It has already been shown that bacteria aid in the precipitation of iron. Whether tropical conditions increase or decrease the activity of such bacteria is unknown."

Chemistry of Iron Solution IRON is much more soluble in the ferrous than in the ferric form. Where, as in the case of the ferrous silicates and the sulphides, the iron is already in the ferrous form, it may go at once into solution and be removed, upon the breaking down of the parent rock. If in the ferric form, it must first be reduced; usually by the decay of organic matter, the demand of the decaying carbonaceous matter for oxygen being so great that the latter is abstracted from the ferric compounds and the iron is thereby reduced and rendered' soluble. The iron may go into solution as the sulphate, or in the presence of excess CO2 as ferrous carbonate. It is probably soluble as salts of the organic acids.1 Recent work indicates that these are important in the formation of bog ores.2 There is considerable variety of opinion concerning the behavior of these organic compounds.3 The secretions about the roots of plants and trees also cause the solution and removal of iron and a consequent bleaching of the soil.4 While the matter is not yet well understood, we can probably say definitely that the so-called organic acids are a group of colloids which possess slightly acid properties, and the salts of which are partly soluble

RESIDUAL deposits occur both as products of weathering and as products of hydrothermal decay. PRODUCTS OF WEATHERING That climatic conditions affect greatly both the rate and the results of weathering, is shown. in temperate, polar, arid, and tropical regions, each of which will be considered separately. Weathering under Temperate Climates The decomposition of any rock is accomplished by the removal of the more soluble bases, and a concentration of the relatively insoluble oxides of iron, aluminum, and silicon. By reason of its some-what greater solubility, silica is much more subject to removal than iron and alumina. The two important residual end products of weathering are sands and clays, the former consisting essentially of quartz, and the latter of kaolin and limonite.1

Since the inception of a qualitative pressure arch theory by Haak4 in 1911, much work has been done in an effort to apply this concept to underground mining. It has been used in both longwall and room and pillar mining to determine roadway and pillar stability (with varying degrees of success). This paper presents a summary of a case study where the pressure arch concept was extended in a totally qualitative manner to define the source of roof control problems in the mains of a Pennsylvania mine. It was concluded that, due to the method of mining employed, a pressure arch formed over a portion of the entries, and the high abutment stresses accompanying it resulted in extreme roof deterioration. The following discussion will include a general presentation of the arching mechanism, the physical response of the roof strata under mining-induced abutment stresses (both from the case study and in general), a computer simulation of ground stability under both "normal" and "abutment" stress conditions, and finally, potential means of alleviating such conditions.

INTRODUCTION. IT is unnecessary to repeat here the contents of many valuable contributions to this subject which have appeared in the Transactions and in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. As a basis for the further suggestions of this paper, the following are the most important: 1. The investigation of J. R. Don,1 showing the gold of certain Australasian veins to have been deposited by ascending solutions, and not by lateral secretion. 2. The theory of Prof. Posepny,2 distinguishing the vadose from the deep circulation, and ascribing the origin of certain classes of ore-deposits to ascending solutions of the latter class. 3. The theory of Prof. Van Hise,3 as to the underground circulation and the primary enrichment of veins thereby. 4. The paper of Prof. J. F. Kemp,4 showing that ore-deposits are largely the products of " expiring vulcanism." Many of Prof. Kemp's, ideas have been widely adopted by mining men. 5. The theory of secondary enrichment, so lucidly expounded by Mr. S. F. Emmons.5 This theory, dealing with, the rearrangement of ore-bodies after primary mineralization, has been generally adopted, and seems to me to have been as completely proved as the nature of the case permits. AT the New York meeting of the Institute, April, 1907, I presented a paper entitled, The Formation and Enrichment of Ore-Bearing Veins,1 in which paper I advanced the following propositions (1) That the majority of mineralized veins are the product of expiring vulcanism ; (2) that most of these veins were primarily mineralized by comparatively rich solutions in comparatively short periods of time; (3) that the solutions gained their metal-values from a comparatively rich source; (4) that there is a barysphere containing large amounts of the useful metals; (5) that eruptions spring from various depths and bring various kinds of magmas towards the surface; and (6) that only those eruptions which disturb the barysphere and bring a magma rich in metals sufficiently near the surface to be leached by vein-making solutions are productive of valuable ore-deposits, other eruptions producing barren veins. Ore-deposits due to magmatic segregation were not included in this general survey. As a result of considerable further study I have modified my views in some respects, while in others I feel more sure than ever of the ground taken at that time. That ore-bodies are infrequent occurrences and born of extraordinary conditions I think is now generally accepted. The theory that persisted for a time-namely, that ore-bodies were formed by the ordinary ground-water, which consists of extremely dilute solutions, derived from leaching extremely lean surface-rocks, and which must occupy enormously long periods of time in concentrating the values so leached, is, I think, now pretty generally regarded as not applicable to the great majority

The mineralogical and chemical compositions of various waste materials undergo different reactions when treated thermally The heavy metal contents can be bound to stable phases. These minerals are called reservoir minerals. The main property of these minerals is the stability in their geochemical surrounding containing the heavy metal cations and anions. Examples for these minerals are apatites, spinels, garnets, perovskites and also water containing minerals like ettringites, metal-metal-hydroxi salts, jarosites and zeolites. When the chemical compositions of different wastes are mixed according to the compositions of the new formed minerals, a probable reuse of these wastes can be obtained. The use of waste incineration ashes for the production of cementitious binders and the use of flue gas desulfurization products for cement additives are shown. Also the transformation of highly contaminated materials into stable reservoir mineral assemblages are shown including the study of stabilization and immobilization techniques.

ACID coal mine drainage presents a peculiarly difficult problem for two principal reasons. First is the fact that the amount of acid water discharged from active and abandoned mines constantly in- creases as coal fields are developed and thereby creates a steadily worsening nuisance of rapidly growing importance to the general public as well as to the coal industry. Second is the even more significant fact that there is no method yet known that will appreciably alleviate the acid water problem except at totally prohibitive cost to the coal operators. The problem is thus seen to be an urgent one. With a growing need for good quality water and a growing public demand for abatement of stream pollution, a large portion of the soft coal industry finds itself in the position of year by year dumping more and more acid into the streams and waterways and having no way in sight of improving the situation or even of keeping it from getting worse.

Nano-scale Al-(Fe,Mo)-Si dispersoids form during solution treatment in grain interiors (intradendritic regions) of cast Al7Si0.5Cu0.3Mg alloyed with 0.3Mo (wt.%). Unlike the Q-Al5Cu2Mg8Si6 and ?-Al2Cu age-hardening precipitates which coarsen resulting in loss of strength in Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys, these Mo-containing dispersoids are thermally stable and retain their strengthening effect at elevated temperatures. Consequently, the age-hardened Al7Si0.5Cu0.3Mg0.3Mo (wt.%) exhibits high strength and creep resistance at 300 °C.

The banded nature of the quartz veins which form the Empire lode at the Golden Cross mine, is perhaps their most striking feature. Petrographic studies show that significant differences occur between the bands in terms of textures, quartz grain size, calcite, adularia and kaolinite content, and the form, concentration and mineralogy of sulfide phases.   The d18Oquartz values of individual bands within the vein material range from 7.3-10.9ë. Calculations show that the d18Oquartz values can be adequately explained by temporal variations in the system temperature, boiling and/or variations in the systems fluid/rock ratios.

INTRODUCTORY. THE presentation to the Institute, eight years ago, of the paper of Pošepny on " The Genesis of Ore-Deposits " has borne fruit in much fresh: investigation, as is evidenced, for example, by the group of very valuable papers, by distinguished members" of the United States Geological Survey, read at the Washington meeting-discussions of general principles particularly suggestive to those who are engaged in mining. Pošepny, in the discussion of his famous treatise, said that the present writer seemed to look at every new conception in ore-deposition" from the sole standpoint of its immediate usefulness in mining."* Protesting mildly against " sole " and "immediate," I accept the impeachment. It calls for no defence. THE DEVELOPMENT OF RECENT THEORIES. Given the idea of an underground water-circulation as the chief factor in the deposition of ore, the next step in the inquiry as to the genesis of such deposits is, the endeavor to determine which particular part of the general water-circulation is responsible for the results. Around this question have centered the controversies of a generation, and to these controversies we owe the gradual clarification of our ideas upon the processes of ore-formation. It is unnecessary to sketch here their progress from Werner to Le Conte, who combated in 1883 the extreme views of the lateral-seeretionists, and in 1893 opposed the narrow interpretation of the ascensionist-theory. The generally accepted opinions of to-day are a well-deserved tribute to his philosophic discrimination. Thanks to Prof. Van Hise and Mr. Slichter, whose work he utilizes, we have now arrived at a comprehensive conception

This paper is concerned with the observation and analysis of bubble clusters in a laboratory flotation cell. A device was used in which bubbles were allowed to rise in clean water containing the same frother and collector concentration as in the cell. Bubble clusters were recorded using a high speed camera and analysed using an image analyser. Dodecyl amine was employed as a collector to float silica. The effect of impeller speed on the cluster behaviour was investigated. The results were interpreted in terms of cluster diameter and shape factor. The sizes of the bubbles forming the clusters were also measured and compared to the sizes of the independent bubbles in the cell. It was found that there was an optimum impeller speed in which the cluster diameter was a maximum. Higher agitation and the consequent higher power inputs resulted in cluster break-up while lower shear rates promoted cluster formation.

The entrainment of charge materials, evaporation or volatilization of elements and ejection of slag and metal by spitting or the bursting of gas bubbles are mechanisms whereby stainless steel plant dust are generated from the electric arc furnace and refining converter. TCLP and ASTM D 3987-85 tests on dust that was collected from the baghouse filter system of a South African Stainless Steel plant showed that this dust can be considered hazardous according to South African legislation, due to the high degree of Cr (VI) leachability (~13mg/l for TCLP and ~8mg/l for ASTM vs. regulation threshold of 0.05mg/l in drinking water). The dust is therefore considered to be harmful to both the environment and human health, due to its high solubility in water and carcinogenic properties. It should therefore be treated before being stockpiled or land filled. This paper consequently describes an investigation into the formation of Cr(VI)-containing stainless steel plant dust and the stabilisation thereof in a sintering process, whereby the dust was mixed with a silica-rich clay. It is postulated that Cr(VI) form when the (Mg,Fe,Mn,Cr)3O4spinel phase, CaO, Ca(OH)2 and CaF2 (all of which are present in the dust) react. This reaction was found to take place both at ambient and at high temperatures (1100°C). Stabilization of Cr(VI) in the dust could be achieved at an optimum sintering temperature of 1100°C for a 50mass% dust : 50mass% clay mixture. Chromium emission during the sintering process was found to be low, and within environmental limits.

THE causes that have formed fissures in the earth's crust, and the agencies that have converted them into metallic beds, are amongst the most important and interesting subjects that can engage the attention of the mining engineer or the scientist. They lie at the very base of the whole system of vein geology, and until something like a correct theory can be arrived at with regard to them, the science as such is necessarily very incomplete. The data for such a theory, owing to a lack of careful and systematic observations in countries pre-eminently metalliferous, like Mexico and the States of Central and South America, are almost entirely wanting. Doubtless there has been abundant speculation on the subject, from the earliest times down to the present, in every country where mining has been one of the leading industries of the inhabitants. Perhaps the theory of Elie de Beaumont more nearly approaches a satisfactory explanation than that of any contemporary authority. The most recent investigations, both in Europe and on this continent, tend to produce the conviction that the phenomena of metallic fissure lodes are in some way connected with, and- dependent upon, plutonic agencies-not, however, as the direct product of volcanic activity, but rather as the result of chemical agencies called into play through its aid. Active volcanoes generally produce only the well-known types of volcanic rocks, though, perhaps, well-marked cases can be shown where these contain ores of copper, etc., evidently derived from the same deepseated source as their hypogene gangue. To prove that there is a connection between metallic lodes and plutonic rocks, it is not necessary that the ores should in all cases occupy fissures within the limits of masses of propylite, rhyolite, or other like rocks, or be
