"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on solutions and isolated powders provide direct evidence for the involvement of Cr(V) species in the reduction of Cr(VI) by NAD(P)H. ESR analysis of an isolated Cr(V)NAD( P)H solid yields 6 11 = 1.9831 and 6.i. = 1.9772, indicating that the unpaired electron occupies the d22 orbital of the Cr(V) ion, with square-pyramidal geometry. Addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2 0 2 ) to the N AD(P)HCr( VI) reaction mixtures suppresses the Cr(V) species and generates hydroxyl (""OH) radicals. The ""OH radicals were detected via ESR spin trapping, employing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide and a-(4-pyridyl-1- oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone as spin traps. The dependence of Cr(V) and ""OH radical formation on the H20 2 and Cr(VI) concentrations indicates that the Cr(V) species react with H20 2 to generate the ""OH radicals. Similar results were obtained by using various diols (arabinose, cellobiose, FAD, fructose, glyceraldehyde, ribose, and tartaric acid), a-hydroxycarboxylic acids, and glutathione. Investigations with superoxide dismutase showed no significant participation of 02 in the generation of OH radicals. These results thus indicate that the Cr(V) complexes, produced in the reduction of Cr(VI) by cellular reductants, react with H20 2 to generate ""OH radicals, which might be the initiators of the primary events in the Cr(VI) cytotoxicity.In this paper we report an electron spin resonance (ESR)3 spectroscopic detection of Cr(V) species in the reduction of potassium dichromate, henceforth called Cr(VI), by NAD(P)H and other diols. Also reported here is the detection of the hydroxyl (""OH) radical in the reaction between hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) and a variety of Cr(V) complexes. This work was undertaken because while the reduction of Cr(VI) to lower oxidation states has been suggested as a key step m the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity, mutagenicity, and DNA alteration, the details are not yet clear (1-5).Earlier studies on the mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction in cellular systems include those on the reduction of chromate by microsomes (6-8), rat liver DT-diaphorase (9), and aldehyde oxidase (10). All these studies imply that Cr(VI) can be reduced to Cr(Ill) by cellular constituents. Regarding the mechanism of Cr(Vl) carcinogenicity, Jennette postulated that Cr(V) is the ultimate carcinogenic form of chromium compounds (8). This conclusion has led to many further investigations of the formation of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions (11-33). More recently, however, Kawanishi and co-workers (34) have investigated the mechanism of DNA cleavage induced by Cr(VI) in the presence of H20 2 and have argued that it is not Cr(V) itself that is carcinogenic, but it is the reactive oxygenated species (02, 10 2 , ""OH) (produced by the decomposition of the Crv(02) ¾ - ion) that cause the DNA alteration."

At Binebase mineralisation is hosted within an andesitic Neogene volcaniclastic succession on Sangihe Island, Indonesia. Two major alteration types occur; an initial widespread phyllic assemblage of quartz -illite with chlorite, smectite, gypsum and pyrite, and a superimposed quartz - barite - sulphide assemblage. The phyllic alteration arose from a neutral to weakly acidic hydrothermal solution of greater than 200 degrees C, and the quartz - barite - sulphide assemblage arose from a cooler slightly more acidic fluid. This second alteration event is interpreted to have selectively replaced permeable volcaniclastic breccias and coarse lithic tuffs within the altered sequence. Gold and silver mineralisation is associated with the latter alteration, and is locally controlled by the degree of silicification and sulphide abundance. The sulphides present are pyrite, covellite and chalcopyrite. The sulphides are very fine grained with colloform and framboidal textures and were deposited contemporaneously with the bulk silicification of the coarse sediments. A large portion of the mineralised rock has been oxidised to a quartz - barite -limonite - goethite - jarosite assemblage.Coincident gold, silver and antimony geochemical soil anomalies gave the best correlation with anomalous gold and silver grades in bedrock as identified by drilling. Resistivity proved a reliable geophysical method for delineating zones of silicification.

The study described here is concerned with the development of a model for the simulation and optimization of a rod milllpebble mill circuit. A series of laboratory tests was conducted to investigate the effect of critical operating variables. The pebble mill model structure used was a population balance type which accounta for impact breakage and fines production from pebble wear. Model parameterization and verification were performed using data obtained in batch tests and in a plant test campaign. The model developed was found to provide accurate predictions of plant-scale grinding. The prediction errors are less than 21 for the product size and 31 for the mill power required to achieve that product with a mill volume scale-up of 14,000 to 1. These results indicate that accurate extrapolations from laboratory batch data to plant scale performance are poaaible using the population balance model and scale-up prediction procedures for pebble mill circuits as well as ball mills. Preliminary indications are that the new model developed here will provide vital input for pebble mill optimization and process control as well as pebble mill design.

The cementation kinetics of silver with aluminum particles were studied with model solutions under nitrogen atmosphere, varying the temperature, aluminum/silver ratio, pH and concentrations of thiourea and surface activator Recoveries were evaluated both by solution concentrations and by REDOX measurements. Tafel curves were determined for this system. The results showed the cementation process to be essentially independent of the pH and thiourea concentration. However, a strong influence was observed with respect to temperature, aluminum/silver ratio and the quantity of activator. There is evidence that the controlling step is the dissolution of aluminum oxide from the particle surface.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. It is quite well known, although not so well documented, that radio noise is generated during rock fracture. Radio noise has also been observed during severe earthquakes. The source has been thought to be the fracturing of the rock, although the mechanism has never been unequivocably proven. A study of these radio emissions may provide insight into rock dynamics prior to seismic events, and after blasting. A programme of electric-field recordings has been undertaken at Brisbane quarries during multi-hole blasting. Preliminary analysis has shown that three types of signal may be distinguished. They are hole detonation, rock fall and post blast relaxation signals. It is thought that information about the blast, and the fracture of the rock, may be ascertained from these Signals.

Infrastructure may be defined as anything necessary for the development and operation of a project, which is peripheral to the basic extraction, handling and processing of material. The Court rejected the suggestion that CRAE had actively misled DMR concerning the worth of its tenements. The Court agreed that CRAE remained silent about certain significant information concerning CRAE's own tenement area. It was a significant question as to what duties CRAE'was under, given that it was in joint venture with DMR in respect of one of the tenement areas. Did that joint venture create an obligation on CRAE to disclose everything it knew? The Court said no. The Court said that the fiduciary duties were defined by the terms of the farm-in agreement between DMR and CRAE. When the Court examined the disclosure obligations within the confines of the contract, it held that CRAE had not breached those terms.

A joint research programme conducted by BHP Central Research Laboratories and Du Pont Wesfarmers Pty Ltd examined the effect of the size of cast primers on the run up and steady state detonation velocities of ammonium nitrate based explosives as a function of blasthole diameter. Both continuous and point to point velocity of detonation measurement techniques were used. The field trials examined a number of the Du Pont HDP series of primers in conjunction with ANFO, emulsion and watergel explosives. Results indicate that the run up velocity of 187mm diameter ANFO charges is negligible using cast primers as small as 1509. However, emulsion and watergel explosives did exhibit run up in both 187 and 311mm diameter blastholes, independent of the size of primer. This could last from 7 to 10 blasthole diameters.

In 1911, Miami Copper Co. began a block caving operation at its Miami, AZ property. A gravity mill was used to separate copper minerals from the Pinal Schist host rock. Until 1932, the mill tailings were deposited by the upstream method using perimeter launders and spigot valves in six canyons adjacent to the mill. In 1928, the larger and more distant Solitude tailing pile was developed. By 1932, it was receiving all tailings. In 1925, Miami Copper converted the gravity mill to flotation with sulfide copper recoveries. From 1934 to 1943, Miami, Copper ran a leach-precipitate float (LPF) circuit on mined ore and, in 1943, began sulfuric acid in-place leaching of a portion of the caved area formed by block caving. The pregnant solutions were collected underground and pumped to the LPF precipitating drums to harvest copper. In 1954, the company started mining low-grade ore. This led to the running an old LPF plant on select mill tailings from April 1957 to March 1959. In 1959, block-cave mining ceased. Solution mining became the only source of production using a launder precipitation plant. In the mid-1960s, Miami Copper merged with the Tennessee Corp. In the latter part of the decade, Cities Service Co. bought the combined properties. In 1976, Cities Service commissioned a 15-t/d (16.5-stpd) solvent extraction electrowinning(SX-EW) facility at its Miami copper property to replace the precipitation plant. In 1982, Occidental Petroleum Co. bought Cities Service. In 1983, the Miami operations were sold to Newmont Mining Corp. and set up as a subsidiary company, Pinto Valley Copper Corp. Finally, in 1987, Newmont Mining spun off a combined Pinto Valley and San Manuel unit as Magma Copper Co.

"The mission of the Respirable Dust Center is to enhance the health, safety and productivity of the miners 'through advancing the fundamental .understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dus.t and lungs for reducing the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease. All Dust Center activities are focussed to be responsive to this mission which is shared by several federal agencies closely associated with the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust such as USBM, M,SHA, and NIOSH, and the mining industry. While significant progress has been achieved in making mine atmospheres cleaner and healthier, respirable dust disease remains the nations worst industrial hazard. GOALSThe goals of the Respirable Dust Center have been formulated to recognize the diverse scientific, engineering and medical aspects of respirable dust as well as the need to enhance the interaction, education and technology transfer in the respirable dust area.The Center goals are to:1. Enhance the understanding of the scientific, engineering and biological characteristics of fine and respirable mineral particles, fibers, organic aerosols, and complex particles found in the mining and milling atmospheres.2. Advance the understanding of the physical behavior of airborne respirable dust particles in flowing streams under different. stimuli during mining and milling.3. Advance fundamental understanding of the causative mechanisms for the occupationally related lung impairments and the airway diseases of mine and mill workers.4. Establish the relationship between natural and cultural factors (mine geology, mineralogy, mining and milling methods, equipment and control measures) in the generation, exposures, and pathogenic properties of fine particles.5. Contribute to the development of control mechanisms for reducing ambient respirable dust concentrations, worker exposure, the incidence and severity of dust related lung disorders and disease prevention in mining and milling atmospheres.6. Enhance functional integration among the various research personnel in the Center, as well as, with other groups, such as MSHA, NIOSH and USBM involved in respirable dust research and control.7. Develop technically trained personnel for employment in the mineral industry for respirable dust research and control.8. Enhance the availability of respirable dust-related information utilizing several technology transfer avenues."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has attempted to use ultrasonic signal travel-time measurements to measure loaded roof bolt strains. The strain measurements are then related to roof bolt loads through equations or empirical calibrations. Such techniques offer the potential of accurate, rapid bolt load measurement that does not disturb the anchotage. This report presents 6e research findings for a specific type of ultrasonic measurement instrument using a pulsed-phase-Iock-Ioop technique. This technique measures signal travel time indirectly by measuring frequency changes. A complete development of the applicable theory and detailed derivations of key equations is presented along with empirical laboratory and field results. The differences between anticipated and measured behaviors are analyzed and discussed. The report identifies problems encountered in applying pulsed-phase-Iock-Ioop technology to roof bolt load measurement and provides potential solutions to many of them. A key assumption of pulsed-phase-lock-loop theory is that driving and reflected signal frequencies will always be equal. Findings showed that not only were actual frequencies not equal but they were not stable or simply related. Reflection wave shape also was not stable. The ramification of these findings and ways to minimize their adverse effects are presented.

Experiments were carried out on 76 mm laboratory heavy medium cyclone treating -2.0 t 0.5 mm coal and on two 600 mm industrial heavy medium cyclones treating coal in the size range -13.0 t 0.5 mm. The variables studied were spigot diameter and feed medium gravity. The generalised distribution curve for the separation of coal in these heavy medium cyclones has been defined by the equation [ ] The specific gravity of separation SG has been found to increase linearly with increase in feed medium, gravity (SGf). The relationship for SG of industrial cyclone is given as 50 SG = -6.801 t 6.463 SGf t 0.0327 Spig 50 -0.02625 SGf. Spig. Further, the probable error for the separation has been found to be linearly related to (SG50 - SGf ) according to the equation [ ] The model equations developed have been used to select appropriate levels of operating conditions to achieve an increase in the yield by about 2 to 4% without affecting the quality of the product.

Silicon oxynitride, Si2N20, has many of the intrinsic properties of a potential high temperature engineering ceramic material. Some of these properties are similar to those of silicon nitride, which has been more intensively studied. However, although silicon nitride ceramics are approaching a state of microstructural refinement for various engineering applications, silicon oxynitride has received little attention. This has been mainly due to a lack of an economical and reproducible method of producing pure crystalline Si2N2O. Several reports exist on the preparation of crystalline Si2N2O from SiO2 and Si3N4, yet very little kinetic data exist. Even less is known about the carbothermic reduction of SiO2 in a nitrogen atmosphere to produce Si2N2O. In this paper, a review of the properties and methods of preparing silicon oxynitride will be presented. In addition, results obtained by reactively sintering SiO2 and Si3N4 will be discussed. The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. When the coal reaches the terminal, it is loaded into barges and then transloaded onto ocean-going vessels with barge mounted

The 8th Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/ University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd August, 1990, under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The primary object of this meeting was to give research students at UCT and US the opportunity to present their work to a critical audience from industry, and to obtain feedback regarding the research needs of the minerals industry. Although the emphasis of these symposia is on work in progress at US and UCT, they also create an excellent opportunity for informal discussion between academics and metallurgists in industry. The first symposium in this series was held in 1982 at US, while the symposium in 1989 was replaced by the International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, also held in Gordon's Bay.

"In 1989, improved milling and recoveries resulted in a record production of 7 722 200 Ib Nb2P5 at the Niobec Mine. At the beginning of 1990, proven and probable reserves stood at 11 952 000 tons grading 0.65% Nb205. This year, the world steel market has slowed and as a result, niobium consumption is down. Consequently, production at the mine dropped 14% for the second quarter.IntroductionThe Niobec Mine is located approximately nine miles northwest of Chicoutimi, Quebec, (Fig. I). After ten years of production, the Niobec Mine is the only operating niobium mine in North America and the second largest producer of niobium in the world after Brazil.The Niobec Mine is a joint venture held equally by Teck Corporation and Carnbior. Teck Corporation operates the mine while Cambior is responsible for marketing and selling the niobium pentoxide concentrate (Nb2P5).The deposit was discovered in 1964 following an airborne radiometric survey in search of uranium. However, mining of the deposit did not begin until 1976. The initial production capacity of 1500 tons per day was increased several times to the present capacity of 2450 tons . The deposit is considered as an ample source of pyrochlore concentrate for at least 15 years at the present production rate.Niobium, also known as columbium, is a greyish-white metal used primarily as an alloy in various steels and other metals. The use of niobium in alloys heightens tensile strength and improves corrosion resistance while at the same time reducing the weight of the alloy. Niobium is also used in the fabrication of steel for the aerospace, automobile, and oil and gas pipeline industries. Although substitutes for niobium exist, their use often results in diminished performance and net cost increases."

In modern industry, cost and productivity concerns and environmental concerns are sometimes incompatible, but at other times only appear to be incompatible. Surface disposal of wastes from coal preparation plants appears to be an area of the production system with little opportunity for initiating measures which cut costs and concurrently benefit the environment. However, improving the recovery efficiency of fine coal circuitry can cost-effectively reduce the plant waste environmental burden by a substantial amount. Studies at Jim Walter Resources indicate that fine-coal waste measuring 50% ash contains over 50% recoverable, marketable coal. Modifications to the plant circuitry which reduce the amount of misplaced coal in the fine-coal waste stream could substantially reduce the volume of fine waste disposed aboveground. Studies at Jim Walter Resources indicated that episodic overloads of the vacuum filters in the fine-coal circuits at the preparation plants were a source of misplaced coal in the fine-waste stream of the cleaning plants. To improve the filtration rate and reduce overload episodes, conventional rotary blowers were replaced with high pressure air blasters on most of the filters. Subsequent testing indicated that measurable benefits can be derived from this modification.

Most base and precious metal mineralisation in the Gympie Province is genetically linked to intrusion of branitoids of Late Permian to Late Triassic age. Most lodes are hydrothermal quartz and quartz-calcite veins at intrusive contacts, within either the granitoids themselves or the country rocks, and commonly associated with dykes. Other types of intrusive related deposits are disseminated porphyry type Cu, base metals in skarns, and Mo in quartz pipes and veins. Although the Late Permian-Late Triassic granitic intrusives can be subdivided in terms of age, it is not yet possible to relate deposits of particular metals or styles to granites of a specific age on a regional scale.Some significant mineralisation is not associated with granitic intrusions. This includes the Gympie goldfield, by far the largest known deposit within the Gympie Province. Gold occurs in quartz veins crosscutting Early Permian volcaniclastic sediments and also in NW striking fault zones. The source of the mineralisation is unknown. Gold and silver also occur in epithermal, disseminated and breccia hosted deposits within Late Triassic continental volcanics. Epithermal Hg mineralisation at Kilkivan may be related to Early-Middle Triassic volcanics.
