Introduction Lime enters our daily life in many ways. Our building, chemical, agricultural, sanitary, and industrial endeavours depend on it to such a great extent that it could probably be called the most important inorganic chemical, and the extent to which it is used might be considered an index of industrial development. Industrial limes vary greatly in quality, due to internal structure and other characteristics. They may be good or bad, sensitive or slow to react. While improper manufacture may not greatly alter the appearance of the lime, it may affect its properties considerably and thus its suitability in the many processes in which lime is used. In some of the processes, one kind of lime is wanted, in others another. While the nature of the stone from which it is made has much to do with whether a lime is suitable or not, its burning and hydration are the crux of the matter. Up to not so many years ago, the knowledge of lime burning was rather imperfect and it is only relatively recently that its manufacture is approaching the state of a higher industrial art. This slow development was in part due to lime manufacture being scattered among many small concerns who, independently, either lacked the inclination or could not afford to strive for a higher technical development.

Introduction The ore deposit mined by Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is one of the numerous nickel-copper sulphide bodies marginal to the large oyster-shaped mass of differentiated norite in the Sudbury district, famous as the world's most important nickel producing field. The unique character of the ore deposits of the district has resulted in its intensive geological study over a period of more than fifty years. The results of these studies have given rise to a voluminous geological literature and to a great deal of controversy as to the genesis of the ores. This description of the structural geology at the Falconbridge mine is presented in the hope that it may form a small part of the chain of evidence leading to a reasonably satisfactory explanation of the ore genesis. The mine, named after Falconbridge township in which the deposit occurs, lies along the southeast margin of the norite mass which, however, is here concealed beneath a deep mantle of glacial sands and gravels averaging over 100 feet in thickness. As a consequence, the deposit was not discovered by the early prospectors, and it was not until 1916-17 that E. J. Longyear, of Minneapolis, located the ore by drilling. The discovery was foreshadowed in 1899 by the work of Thomas A. Edison, who found indications of the deposit by what is believed to have been a combination of magnetic and electrical geophysical surveys. He sank a prospect shaft over what has to date proven to be the largest and richest ore section in the mine. A wet quicksand layer at the rock surface proved impenetrable, however, and the "Edison' shaft never reached bed-rock.

The growing popularity of perlite (sometimes spelled pearlite) as a raw material for thermal expansion into pumicelike products in the Western States has prompted a preliminary investigation of the properties of such material and the problems that want solution to put a perlite industry on a firm foundation. The Bureau of Mines is undertaking the gathering of data and the solution of these problems, and the following paper records some of the available information. and the promise of the material, with some comparisons of advantages of the various competing lightweight aggregates that can be made from siliceous volcanic glasses and rocks containing entrapped or dissolved water that causes their expansion on' quick heating to their softening points. This new industrial rock has caught the fancy of the mineral industry in the western States because it has Fume advantages over natural pumice. Chemically, it is typified as rhyolitic in composition, and one may find obsidian, rhyolite, pumice, pumicite, and perlite from the same vant and contemporaneous in origin. The material need not be rhyolite but should be a siliceous or acid lava and contain 2 to 5 percent water still in "solution" in the rock. On quick heating to the softening temperature the material puffs, due to conversion of the contained eater into bubbles of steam. Slow heating causes gradual release of the imprisoned water by decrepitation and. cracking and-results in, very little puffing. Perlite is often in the form of ovoid volcanic bombs formed by explosive eruption of large masses of lava into the air, where they, quickly cool, with escape of little of the contained water, exceptt perhaps for a hollow interior. Since they cool in layers they have an onion-type structure and a pearly luster from interference of light between the. layers, which is' the origin of the name "perlite." Perlite may occur in intruded flows that have been quickly cooled and partly expanded but retained most of their magmatic water content. Obsidian may be the same lava cooled quickly under conditions that prevented crystallization of feldspars and other minerals, leaving the volcanic glass that may or may not retain all of the original contained water.

In Europe and in certain other foreign countries studies have been made, extending over a period of years, relating to the winning of oil from oil shale. More work has been done in these countries than in the United States, for the reason that a supply of natural petroleum has not been so generally available there as here. Information has been obtained relating to present practices in these foreign lands in the development of a shale-oil industry. It is realized that in the past there has been very little inducement to invest capital in shale-oil enterprise in the United State's because the supply of petroleum has been plentiful; however, the time possibly is not far distant when the utilization of oil shale may be cons¬idered a desirable and financially sound venture, as it may be necessary before long to augment our supply of oil with that recovered by processing shale. The data presented herein portrays at least some of the thoughts of those engaged in obtaining oil from oil, shale in Europe, and they depict some of the results thus far obtained as well as certain plans for further efforts to win oil from shale; it is hoped that those who undertake the development of a shale-treating industry in this country will find useful information in this report.

Abstract This paper lists the interests of the Physical Metallurgy and Chemical Research laboratories of the Metallgesellschaft, which were visited by the authors, members of a group of Canadian investigators sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction in 1945. The Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratory The following information was obtained from Professor E. Schmid, Chief of the laboratories. It is understood that Dr. Schmid is a former Nazi and was to be removed from his post in November (1945). Aluminium Research The laboratories investigated the corrosion resistance of the high-strength aluminium-magnesium-zinc alloys. The same test procedure as used by V.L.W. was followed and Dr. Schmid co-operated closely with Dr. Brenner on this project. Intercrystalline corrosion was combatted by additions of chromium, titanium, or vanadium, and the work in this field parallels that of Dr. Brenner of V.L.W. * Dr. Schmid reports that Bollenrath and Siebert believe that corrosion difficulties with these alloys can be overcome to some extent by heat treatment. He himself was of opinion that the correct answer lay not only in correct alloying but also in correct heat treatment. The heat treatment involved either interrupted quenching or a change in quenching rate from a solution temperature of 500°C. The procedure is either a slower cooling from solution temperature or an interrupted cooling with a holding period at l50°C. Work had been done on piston alloys, the 11-13% Si, 1% Ni, 1% Cu, and 1% Mg being the favoured material. This is called Lo-Ex and is similar to Mahle 124 or KS1275.

The number of fatalities from mine explosions for the fiscal year 1945 dropped below that of the year before; continued improvement over the record of the years from 1940 to 1945 is hopeful, but the number of reported explosions has increased rather than diminished, and the number of victims claimed by explosions is often more definitely a factor of chance than forethought. Mine fires and explosions can be eliminated through the methods now well-known to those well-informed in matters pertaining to safety in mining but ignored by many coal-mine operators and employees who follow procedures of the past or their own short cuts, regardless of disasters that may result: Tried and proved safety measures for preventing mine fires and explosions have been recommended to the mining public repeatedly, yet only a relatively small but far-sighted minority have adopted these measures and made them a part of operating practice. That far more explosion disasters did not occur in 1945 is fortunate. In 1945 a coal-mine fire of electrical origin caused heavy loss of life, while several others from the same cause were controlled with but few fatalities; this hazard is now being curbed temporarily to some degree after the bad record of the two preceding years, but a real solution of the problem has not been reached, although cooperating committees trying to produce at least some answer have made progress.

Following the preparation of tantalum oxide and carbide (1) an investigation of the details relating to the production of tantalum metal powder was planned. From the literature (2) it was evident that tantalum could be produced either by reduction of potassium tantalum fluoride with an alkali metal or by electrolysis of a fused salt mixture containing a tantalum compound. The latter method appeared to be the more suitable and, as there was considerable divergence of opinion in the literature as to the nature of the reactions involved, it was decided to study the electrolytic process. The ultimate aim in any case was to produce tantalum pOWder for use in an investigation of the problems relating to the preparation of consolidated tantalum.FACTORS GOVERNING ELECTROLYSISAfter a few preliminary exploratory electrolyses several factors which needed amplification were revealed. These will be mentioned before the details of the electrolysis experiments are given.COMPOSITION OF THE BATHWithout the knowledge gained in the preliminary experiments it would be thought that the best material for the bath would be that one which underwent electrolytic decomposition. Consider what at first appeared the most likely - namely - potassium tantalum fluoride. The melting point of K2TaF7 was determined to be 630°C with volatilization and decomposition taking place at that temperature so that it would not have been very satisfactory.

Introduction In 1937, the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, was carrying on an extensive exploratory diamond-drilling programme. Most of this drilling was done on the 4100 level, the lowest working level in the mine. One of the exploratory diamond-drill holes, at approximately 12,500 feet from the portal of the tunnel, encountered heavily mineralized stringers of chalcopyrite and sphalerite in silicified grey schist. The mineralization was encountered just to the hanging-wall of the green mottled schist at a point 350 feet south of the 4100 tunnel. To delimit this new orebody, drifts and cross-cuts were driven on 3500, 3800, and 4100 levels to the hanging-wall in the area of the projected mineralization. On the 3500 level, the top of the mineralized zone was encountered. The zone was thoroughly explored by drifting and diamond drilling. The mineralization, however, was not sufficiently concentrated to be of commercial grade. On the 3800 level, the zone was found to consist of disconnected stringers of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Drifting was continued to the west and a long lens-shaped area of grey schist containing fairly heavy stringers of chalcopyrite was delimited. This lens later proved to be very close to the top of the commercial mineralization of the No. 8 orebody. On the 4100 level, a diagonal cross-cut was driven to the footwall of the downward projection of the mineralized zone. Diamond-drill holes from this cross-cut indicated a zone of heavy mineralization. A drift was driven off the cross-cut parallel to the zone and some distance to the footwall of it. Further diamond drilling disclosed a mineralized zone approximately 300 feet long and 35 feet wide containing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite. The foregoing development work indicated a fairly large lens of mineralization of sufficient concentration to be classed as ore between the 4100 and 3800 levels. To explore this mineralization at depth, long diamond drill holes, dipping at minus 57° and minus 80°, were planned from some point to the hanging-wall of the orebody. The 4100 level was not suitable for small development headings, due to wider gauge track and larger cars than on the levels above. Therefore, a raise was driven from the diagonal cross-cut on the 4100 level to a point some 70 feet above and just inside the footwall of the orebody. From the top of the raise, drifts were expanded east and west to delimit the ore zone. In addition, a long cross-cut was driven 350 feet to the hanging-wall, and drifts were opened east and west from the end of the cross-cut to provide diamond-drill stations for the exploration of the orebody at depth.

"INTRODUCTION During the development work on sponge iron by the Bureau of lines it was desired to produce a product of maximum density for the furnace. One means of doing this would be to make a plastic mixture of the ground ore and extrude as pellets or large slugs or brick shapes.If a pelletizing Process is employed, the pellets must be strong enough to resist breaking when rolled and tumbled in going through the rotary kiln. If a brick-making process is employed, the brick must be strong enough to withstand handling and considerable pressure when stacked in the kilns.The study had two objectives: first, to find a binder of sufficient strength throughout the early stages of curing and heat treating and, second, to determine the degree of curing and heat treatment necessary to prevent disintegration under normal working conditions.Although the investigation had as its primary objective the processing of sponge iron, the data should interest other industries in which non plastic or poor-bonding slimes are a problem."

Introduction The production of magnesium by direct reduction of the oxide has far passed the experimental stage and was responsible for 30 per cent of the recent wartime production of 246,000 tons per annum. This paper describes the small-scale experiments which culminated in a number of the wartime plants. The paper traces the author's early experiments on various direct reduction reactions leading to his choice of the ferrosilicon reduction of dolomite and the realization that this reaction would proceed at a satisfactory rate at temperatures obtainable in metal apparatus. MgO has a standard heat of formation of 146,100 cal. and is therefore one of the most difficult oxides to reduce. However, if advantage is taken of the relative volatility of magnesium metal, thermally unfavourable reactions may be utilized. In reaction MgO + X = XO+ Mg . . . . . . . . . . . . . (1) the removal of Mg as a gas at high temperatures displaces the equilibrium to the right in the face of the unfavourable thermo-chemistry which is inevitable with any X other than calcium metal. If X is carbon, not only is the reaction highly endothermic, but CO is gaseous. A temperature of l,864°C. is required to produce a pressure of one atmosphere of Mg. Between l,900°C. and perhaps 400°C., the back reaction takes place readily and special shock cooling devices are required to recover magnesium from the gaseous mixture. This reaction does not lend itself to small-scale experiments and was not examined by the author. If, in reaction, carbon is replaced by a relatively pan-volatile metal, the oxide of which is also non-volatile and possesses a fairly high heat of formation, a reduction reaction is offered which is free from the difficulties associated with carbon. The typical case of silicon will serve as an example: 2MgO + Si = SiO2 + 2Mg (g) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (2) At temperatures above l,000°C., a positive pressure of magnesium will exist over the system. Removal of the magnesium vapour will displace the reaction to the right in the face .of an unfavourable thermal balance. Since magnesium is the only volatile component at this temperature, it may be evolved and condensed, using attractively simple distillation technique.

Abstract This paper deals with the application of the cyanide process to recover gold from a pyrite concentrate produced by means of differential flotation. This concentrate before cyanidation contains from 0.09 oz. to 0.14 oz. gold per ton, of which only about 60 per cent is recoverable. The rest is so fine that it remains interlocked in the pyrite and therefore is not acted on by the cyanide. The concentrate also contains about 15 per cent pyrrhotite and 0.4 per cent chalcopyrite, both of which are cyanicides. The cyanicidal effect of the pyrrhotite is inhibited by preacracing the pulp with lime, and maintaining a high lime alkalinity during cyanidation. The effect of the chalcopyrice is reduced as far as possible by removing those particles which are free by means of a further flotation step immediately prior to cyanidation. This involves the flotation of some very fine material. After nullifying as far as possible these two cyanicides, the concentrate is cyanided directly, i.e., without being roasted. This leaves the pyrite available for subsequent sale as a source of sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, and the entire residue of the cyamde plant, amounting to about 500 tons per day, 1s now being disposed of in this way. Prior to deciding on direct cyanidation, a number of laboratory roasting tests were made. These showed chat, 1f proper control were exercised, a better recovery of gold could be effected from the roasted product than by the direct method of treatment. The tests also showed that the capital cost o the plant would be much higher than that needed for the procedure adopted. The possibility of subsequently selling the pyrite for its sulphur content would also have been eliminated. Introduction A previous paper has described in considerable detail the application of the flotation process to improve gold recovery from Noranda's milling ore, and in so doing has covered the production of an auriferous pyrite concentrate. The present paper deals with the recovery of gold by cyanidation from that concentrate. This gold, though intimately associated with the pyrite, can, for metallurgical purposes, be considered as all occuring in the native state.

IN the mining and handling of sulphide ores, some degree of oxidation takes place on the sulphide surfaces, which are exposed to the atmosphere. It is, moreover, well known that the oxidation compounds formed are a factor when such ores are subsequently treated by flotation. Modern operating technique and reagents are capable of contending with this condition to a major degree, provided that the proportions of the reagents used are varied correctly. This is particularly true at the Tennessee Copper Co., where the ore treated contains pyrrhotite in addition to other sulphides. A number of soluble salts, some of which are unstable, can be formed during the oxidation of the sulphide ores. Those unstable salts, whose oxygen requirements are unsatisfied, are constantly changing to more stable forms because oxygen reacts with them during the crushing, grinding and other operations of ore preparation. We add no chemicals of any kind to the ore pulp in its preparation for flotation feed. Consequently the only compounds that are present in the flotation feed are those produced by the natural oxidation of the ore in the presence of air and water. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is composed of from 60 to 70 per cent sulphides and from 40 to 30 per cent nonsulphide material. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the nature of these various oxygensulphur compounds nor their effect on flotation, but to describe a method for [ ] correcting the effect. Suffice it to say that we have found that the reducing sulphur and oxygen salts have a depressing action on our bulk flotation process.1 From long experience we find that the best means of correcting for this variation in our work is to increase or decrease the quantity of xanthate, the promoting agent, as the quantity of the reducing salts increases or decreases. THE important permanent-magnet alloys 15 years ago contained carbon and depended upon it for their permanent- magnet properties. In recent years great, advances have been made in a number of new alloys substantially free of carbon. These include Remalloy,l an alloy of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum, the various iron- nickel-aluminum alloys of the Mishima2 type, and the more recent Alnico V3 in which the best properties are developed by heat-treating in a magnetic field. The Mishima and the Alnico types of alloys are very brittle and after casting must be ground to size. This article describes a permanent-magnet material4 that can be machined as cast, and when handled with some care can be .rolled to thin sheet and drawn to fine wire. Optimum magnetic properties are developed by a simple heat- treatment, and at this time the ductility A of the alloy disappears. If the cast alloy is heat-treated without cold-working the magnetic energy product is about 1.0 X 106. This material is called Vicalloy I (pronounced vicalloy, V for vanadium, I for iron, and C for cobalt). When the alloy is first hot-worked and then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or grooved rolling, it is found that after heat-treatment the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension can be increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X l06. These higher values have been obtained only after reductions in area of 75 to 95 per cent, and since the material hardens considerably during working, the reduction ordinarily can be accomplished only in fine wires, although larger sizes can be reduced by the use of powerful machinery. When the material has been cold- worked in such a manner as to improve its energy product substantially, it is called Vicalloy II. Commercial use of Vicalloy has been made in the recording of speech. Tape 0.002 by 0.050 in. has been found superior in quality to all others tried, and is now used in the Western Electric Mirrorphone In a variety of forms Vicalloy I or II is useful in many laboratory instruments, and in experiments in which the sizes and shapes required cannot be obtained with the other more brittle permanent-magnet materials. In 1936, during a study of other age- hardening magnetic systems, it occurred to the author that some of the iron-cobalt-vanadium alloys might be suitable for permanent magnets. The proportions of iron, cobalt, and vanadium were varied and a range of alloys of particular interest was found, as shown by the indicated area in Fig. I. The limits of this range of com- position are 30 to 52 per cent iron, 36 to 62 per cent cobalt, and 4 to 16 per cent vanadium. The compositions indicated by points outside this area were also tested. A considerable quantity of experimental data is available on the effect of time, temperature, work-hardening and composition on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. There is, however, little unity of purpose or generality in most of the studies and, because the number of variables is large, the results often are not applicable to the problems that arise in practice. Furthermore, the customary expression of the effect of different variables as separate curves or as three-dimensional diagrams with time, temperature and the dependent variables as coordinates, renders the task of selecting the optimum time and temperature of precipitation treatment, with respect to their simultaneous but unequal etfect on the various properties, exceedingly difficult. The introduction of precipitation treatments to raise the yield strength of 24s-type alloys has created a need for a method of correlating and summarizing the effect of time and temperature on the mechanical properties and susceptibility to inter-crystalline corrosion. Correlation is particularly desirable because the choice of time and temperature is of necessity a compromise to achieve the best possible combination of properties, and the optimum conditions cannot he accurately specified unless the data are in a form in which the alternatives can be readily compared. Therefore, the work described here was undertaken to find a common relationship that would be capable of expressing the effect of precipitation time and temperature on the various properties and by means of which the relative effects could be correlated and their interpretation facilitated. Review of Previous Work In connection with an investigation of the interrelation of age-hardening and creep performance of nickel-silicon-copper alloys, Jenkins and Bucknalll demonstrated that the time required to attain maximum hardness and tensile strength could be expressed by a relationship of the form: t = K • io"^ (i) where t is the time in hours and T the temperature of aging, expressed in degrees absolute, and m and K are constants. They also pointed out that this expression is analogous to that which describes the change of the diffusion coefficient D with temperature; namely, D = Ae-~/m (2) Later, Cohen used this relationship in studies of the mechanism of age-hardening of a silver.rich copper alloyZ and of duralumin.3

Every finding of the year's work, obtained under stress to meet present objectives, contributed to postwar needs, because the very nature and constitution of petroleum and natural gas require that research be conducted along the same general lines whether the results are applied in peace or war. More than 40 reports were submitted to the Petroleum Administration for War and others concerned with (1) evaluation of crude oils to determine their content of aviation-gasoline base stock, (2) evaluation of base stocks for blending with high-octane, synthetically manufactured components, (3) analyses of naphthas to determine their content of various types of hydro-carbons, such as benzene and toluene, and (4) the improvement of quality of marginal base stocks to meet future requirements of aviation gasoline. This upgrading of marginal stocks is being attained by selective distillation and chemical and catalytic removal of sulfur compounds. Asphalts were studied with respect to the characteristics of their various constituents in order to compound them, in the same way that aviation fuels now are being "built" to meet exacting requirements. The work previously initiated to give the industry fundamental data on thermodynamics of hydrocarbons progressed satisfactorily, and the heats of combustion of 10 hydrocarbons in the lubricating oil -range of petroleum were determined. Thermodynamic data requiring highly specialized techniques are so broad in application that their commercial usefulness is not yet fully appreciated.

ORIGINALLY, mining machines were actuated by purely mechanical mechanisms comprising cams, levers and gear trains, which became more and more complex as demands were made for additional operations that would increase mine tonnage. To simplify these intricate machines, development engineers began utilizing the principles of high-pressure hydraulics long employed for the control of various machine tools. The resulting specificially developed hydraulic systems are now literally the heart of the mining machine. During World War No. 2, very little fundamental change in design was made in existing mining machines, but because of the recognition of the merits of hydraulic application to the machines of war, it is reasonably certain that hydraulics will be applied to mining machines in the future to a much greater extent. This potential future indicates that a more thorough knowledge of hydraulics and its maintenance must be incorporated in mine operation. Contamination of Oil Maintenance of high-pressure hydraulic equipment varies considerably with respect to mine practice and conditions. The success or failure is largely dependent upon the hydraulic fluid and its care. Since all successful hydraulic systems have been designed around the use of mineral oil as the fluid, a complete analysis of this prime factor should be made to make clear the requirements of the fluid in a hydraulic system. Contamination of Oil Manufacturers of mining machinery usually have specified an S.A.E. rating or viscosity index of the, proper mineral oil for use with their respective machines without considering the fact that many oils will meet these specifications but will not give the desired life or efficient operation. Hydraulic fluid should be specified as a good grade of mineral oil, such as turbine oil, having rust and oxidation resistance. It must have high chemical stability, high lubricity, and proper viscosity. These factors will minimize maintenance costs by reducing wear and the consequent replacement of parts, and at the same time will lower costs for the oil by extending its life. Bulk purchases of oil should be limited to small sealed containers provided with a proper pouring spout, thus reducing the possibility of contamination of the oil before it reaches the mining machine. The introduction of foreign matter, such as sand, water, coal dust and residue oil left in filling containers, will cause untold damage and maintenance expense. Sand, being one of the best natural abrasives, will soon wear the close tolerances of the various hydraulic mechanisms to an extent that will necessitate complete replacement. Water is considered normally insoluble in oil, but because of the churning action of a hydraulic system water is broken down to particles so small that they remain in suspension. Geologists and engineers in charge of diamond drilling often have no practical experience in the work, yet they must direct the drillers. In discussing some of the problems that arise, the author of this paper has tried to remember the things he did not know about diamond drilling when he first came in contact with that work. The basic reason for most diamond-drill holes is to obtain information. The more thorough the understanding of the geological and engineering problems involved, the greater will be the benefit derived from a drilling program. One of the best methods to ensure some thinking before drilling is to record on the permanent drill log, before the hole is collared, the reasons for the work and the information desired from that particular hole. When the hole is finished, the information obtained should be recorded. Driller The choice of a diamond driller is very important. If no experienced driller is available, a competent miner who has a sense of responsibility and better than average mechanical ingenuity can do the work. The best answer to most practical drilling problems, from the standpoint of the person in charge of the drilling program, is the service of experienced diamond drillers or drilling firms. Equipment Drilling equipment should be adequate to put down the longest hole desired and handle the toughest ground encountered. The type of bit used depends upon the ground drilled. Experimenting with various bits and careful study of footage records are the best means of determining which to use. Under ordinary circumstances it is best to drill using an EX barrel when possible. The length of rod and core barrels that can be used depends on the size of the drill station. Also, the length of core barrel depends on the way the ground cores. In good ground as much core will be recovered with a 10-ft. barrel as with a shorter one, and with considerable saving of drilling time. A water pump is needed if the hole is so deep that the water pressure is not strong enough to wash out the cuttings, or if it is drilled at an angle that prevents full force of the water pressure. Instructions For an Inexperienced Driller 1. Never run a bit too long a time. When a bit seems to be "good for one more run," discard it. 2. Always let the rods down on bottom easily. Protect the bit from sudden shock. 3. Start the drilling slowly and easily. Do not put pressure on the bit too fast. Diamonds can break. 4. Be sure the water pressure is strong enough to clear the bit, but do not use more water than is needed, as it may wash away the core. Usually, if no core is recovered the hole is a total loss. 5. When dry-blocking, do not run without water longer than necessary as the bit may burn. 6. Be sure the rods are well caulked and tightly screwed together. Princess colliery, the largest mine operated by the Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, commenced operations in 1877. It was the first mine sunk in the Sydney coal field with the primary object of working submarine coal. Until 1925, coal was won by the room-and-pillar system. By that year, the depth of cover over the workings was 1,300 feet, and physical conditions had become such that it was impossible to extract completely the pillars formed by the working of the rooms. Because of this, the system of work was changed to longwall in the early part of that year. At first, an orthodox hand-pick method was used, with gate roads laid off at 50-foot centres and the mine cars loaded by hand directly on the longwall faces. Later in the year, the first machine-cut conveyor longwall faces were started.

Introduction Ground failure, violent or otherwise, is a problem to be contended with wherever underground operations are carried out. The character and extent of the failure, whether superficial or of more serious proportions, is determined by a number of factors, among which might be mentioned: the depth and dimensions of the underground workings; the types and distribution of wall rocks; structural features of the ore and enclosing rocks; the degree of metamorphism; the dip of the orebody; concentration of mining operations; the rate of mining; the history of the excavations made on the orebody in question. This last factor implies the consideration of such points as the arrangement and distribution of stoping both past and present, the current sequence of scoping, the type and effectiveness of the support used in old and current workings, and the amount and distribution of unmined parts of the lode. With such a variety of conditions, it is only natural that the situation at one place in a mine will not be the same as that obtaining in another part of the same mine and, more than likely, will be quite different in another property.
