To modern civilization the platinum metals are of inestimable value. Their distinctive properties, both physical and chemical, render them indispensable in an age in which the processes of the laboratory are becoming an essential part of the daily life of the world. Generally, their function, though vital to particular processes, is not spectacular, and so remains unknown to all except the operators. Early Methods of Manufacture The properties of platinum were recognized as of prime importance for scientific work at a very early date, probably between 1750 and 1760. The difficulty of making articles from it seemed almost insurmountable, because no means of attaining the temperature necessary to melt it were known at that time. It is true that solid platinum could be obtained by fusing the metal with a more volatile metal such as arsenic, which was subsequently driven off by baking, but such a method, at its best, would give only a very brittle product, which was totally unsuitable for the purposes for which it was intended. Little, if any, progress could be made until it was discovered that platinum sponge, heated to white heat and hammered in an iron or clay mold, would metallize and retain the shape of the mold. This was a process that could not be wholly satisfactory but from it developed the method of pressing the sponge in a mold and forging it at white heat into wire or sheet. At present a somewhat similar process must be used for fabricating articles of tungsten, molybdenum and other metals of high fusing point, as with these metals we face today the same problems that the scientists of the eighteenth century encountered with platinum, but possibly the next significant advance in the metallurgy of these metals will be the devising of means to melt and cast them. TO some extent this method of preparing platinum has survived, particularly in Europe. There are one or two objections to it, but they are not serious, as they can be surmounted with proper precautions. In the first place, the material is spongy and its millions of cavities contain entrapped air. Unless this is removed by thorough forging above 1000" C. the resultant sheet shows blisters. The dictionary defines 'jargon' as "barbarous or debased language". This description does not suffice. Quiller-Couch has said, it is "a kind of writing which, from a superficial likeness, commonly passes for prose in these days, and by lazy folk is commonly written for prose, yet actually is not prose at all ". The two main vices of jargon, he says, are "that it uses circumlocution rather than short straight speech", like the Babu who reported his mother's death by saying: "Regret to inform you, the hand that rocked the cradle has kicked the bucket ". Its other chief' vice is that "it habitually chooses vague woolly abstract nouns rather than concrete ones", like the newspaper statement; "He was conveyed to his place of residence in an intoxicated condition", instead of saying, "He was carried home drunk ". Jargon is "an infirmity of speech", it is not journalese, but akin to it. "Like respect- ability in Chicago, jargo4 stalks unchecked in our midst" and renders much technical writing ridiculous. It deals in periphrasis instead of going straight to the point, it loves the abstract rather than the concrete, it dabbles in words of sound rather than of meaning. Avoid it, despise it., if you purpose earnestly to write well. "III literature as in life he makes himself felt who not only calls 4 spade a spade but has the pluck to double spades and re-double." * Jargon is rampant in technical publications. Catalogues and other advertisements are conspicuous offenders, but with these the critic is not concerned, except in so far as such 'write-

The natural emulsion samples used in this study were shipped directly from twelve California oil fields, through the courtesy of the superintendents of the main producing companies in those fields. Representative parts of each sample were chosen for the slides. Preparation of the slides was generally made in less than two minutes, including time of exposure; in a few cases, about five minutes was required. The short time was intended to minirmize the changes in conditions. Whenever comparison was of value, standard conditions were established. Spreading by gravity was adopted instead of smearing. Cover glasses were not allowed to rest on the films. General Characteristics of Emulsions The main purpose of the general views (Figs. 1-16) is to illustrate the general characteristics of the dispersed droplets together with any other constituent or impurity that may be found in each emulsion. The magnification is given so that dimensions could be measured from the plates. The slides used for these views had spherical recesses; they gave the best light. Where crystals were intended to be shown in the picture a filter (green was the best') was usually used. Emulsions that showed a tendency to move by concentrated light were pictured without a condenser.

Subsidence and ground movement are phenomena common to and attendant upon practically all large-scale mining operations, and under certain conditions may occur in all workings, large and small. The interpretation of the cause of failure in rock masses involves a study of the nature of plants of weakness common to all rocks. The dominating planes of weakness can readily be determined by observation in any given locality, and in order of importance in the study of subsidence are (1) faulting planes, (2) bedding planes, (3) joint planes, and (4) other prominent planes of weakness such as thrust and shear planes and contacts. This report has mainly to do with the third item, joint planes, and is a preliminary statement which t to be followed by a more complete report in bulletin form.

THE amount of gold that occurs in a ton of milling ore from most of the large-scale copper mines is so small that unusual care and special attention are necessary to recover it. In some cases the gold is not considered important enough to warrant daily assays of the various products. Considering the large tonnage of copper ores that are now concentrated by flotation, as computed in a recent review, the gross gold content is surprisingly large, probably amounting to over 10 million dollars per year in the United States. The indications are that in many of the copper-milling operations with gold content under $1 per ton, only 50 per cent. of the gold is recovered in the flotation concentrates. Lime is generally used as a depressant for pyrite in the flotation circuit. The authors have shown that high lime or a solution high in calcium ions is also a depressant for gold. Their experiments on several well-known ores show that by careful regulation of the alkalinity of the mill solutions, a higher flotation recovery of the gold can be obtained, together with equally good copper recovery in a good grade of copper concentrates. In cyanidation for the recovery of gold, the best accepted practice demands that the mill solutions be tested and regulated by simple chemical reactions at definite periods during treatment or with each change in the treatment. It is similarly important for the recovery of gold that the solution in the flotation circuit be analyzed for calcium ions at regular periods and at each step in the flotation practice. The lime should be added when and where needed and not in excessive amounts at the head of the mill.

Manufacturers and consumers of steel have come to realize during the past few years that cleanliness is of great importance in steels which must meet rigid specifications for various physical properties. Of equal importance is the consistent production of steel which is uniform in these properties. For maximum utility, steels should be uniform not only from heat to heat, but also from ingot to ingot and within each ingot. In the manufacture of killed steels such as the higher carbon forging grades, uniformity as indicated by the usual chemical analysis is easy to obtain, provided that a normal top discard is taken, as is al¬ways the case in steels poured with hot-top practice. No such uniformity, however, holds true for the nonmetallic matter, which consists for the most part of the products of deoxidation of the steel. For a large tonnage of steels which go into articles manufactured by deep-drawing processes, killed steel has never been successfully applied because with the present deoxida¬tion practice, low-carbon killed steel is almost invariably extremely dirty. To obtain the desired qualities for deep drawing, the steel is rimmed, - that is to say, deoxidized with manganese and perhaps a small amount of aluminum, - the resultant product being of high purity in the skin of the ingot, but very badly segregated at the center of the ingot, particularly in the upper-central section. This segregation necessitates a very heavy top discard, and one of the major segregates is carbon which renders the steel too hard to draw properly. If clean, low-carbon killed steel could be made successfully, much better ingot yields would be obtained than by the present rimming steel practice. Furthermore, banded structures and outside and inside seams, which are undoubtedly due in a large measure to blowholes in the ingot, are defects which are very difficult to control in rimmed steel. These defects would be minimized by clean killed steel.

Summary This paper describes the general situation of the mining industry in New Brunswick, and gives a detailed description of the recent developments in the antimony deposits at Lake George and the copper deposits in the vicinity of New Horton. At the end are lists of the most interesting geological literature relating to the Province and of the geological and topographic maps that have been published. Introduction In presenting this paper to the Institute, I apologize for the small amount of scientific data which it contains. Recent investigations in the Province of New Brunswick have been carried on largely by outside interests, and at present we ourselves are in the position .of taking stock. However, I am glad of the opportunity of giving you a general idea of the situation. The Province is making an honest effort to learn the truth concerning her mineral deposits and in time hopes to collect data which should be of interest to the mining community.

In leaching copper ores knowledge of the rate of dissolution of the copper minerals and of the impurities is desirable. With knowledge of these two factors and data as to what minerals are present in the ore the metallurgist has an excellent start on planning a leaching cycle to fit that ore. The rate of dissolution is rather difficult to predict, and the time required to leach a given ore may differ markedly from that required by another ore. The whole study as related to mixed oxidized and sulphide ores is one of relative rates of dissolution of the different copper minerals and the impurities in sulphuric aoid and in ferric sulphate. The aim of leaching is to choose a cycle and strength of solvents to extract a maximum amount of copper and a minimum of impurities. The consumption of reagents per unit of copper dissolved is a function of the strength of the reagents used and the relative rates of attack on copper minerals and impurities. An opportunity may exist of obtaining the kind of electrolyte wanted for electrolytic precipitation and yet of saving on the consumption of reagents by modifying the strength of ferric sulphate and of sulphuric acid during the cycle to fit the time needed for dissolving the sulphide and oxidized minerals present.

THE investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 percent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend' test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

Introduction During recent years the work of the Geological Survey in northwestern British Columbia has been in the nature of reconnaissance and exploratory mapping, largely for the purpose of gaining knowledge of the potential mineral-producing zones known to occur along the eastern side of the Coast range, and also to gather such data as might facilitate their exploitation. Commencing with fairly detailed mapping in the more accessible parts, the work has been continued and expanded until now an understanding has been gained of the more general features of a continuous section along the range for a distance of about two hundred miles. Geographically, northern British Columbia is more or less isolated. It is cut off from the central part of the Province by a rugged and mountainous country which, except for the telegraph line and a rarely travelled trail along it, is not penetrated by any developed routes or lines of communication. To the west, it is cut off from the Pacific by the Coast range, an extremely rugged area sixty to eighty miles in width which, except along the few navigable rivers cutting across it, cannot be readily traversed. Politically, it is further isolated in this direction by the narrow strip of south-eastern Alaska which borders the coast and extends inland to the axis of the range.

This paper describing mining practices at the United Verde copper mine, Jerome, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts f the United States. At present mining operations are being conducted both underground and by electric shovels in an open pit. The open-pit work has been described by E. M. J. Alenius in a previous publication of the Bureau of Minos;3 the present paper will be confined to a description of the underground mine. The underground methods comprise horizontal cut-and-fill, shrinkage with delayed filling, horizontal square-set, inclined square-set, and top slice. The normal daily production of the underground mine is 3,000 tons of copper ore per day, requiring the employment of 900 men underground.

Flaubert, as we know, laid stress on the selection of the right word, le mot juste, the precise epithet, the word that belongs to the thing. A sentence, or even a paragraph, may be spoiled by the use of a word that is not proper, that does not fit or is foreign to the meaning intended. An Australian mining expert is reported to have said: You have a property of considerable value, and what I saw warrants a good development of very rich cubicular galena, with gossan intermixed. 'Cubicular' means `belonging to a small bedroom', a `cubicle' being a sleeping compartment. He meant `cubic', of course. This is a malapropism, and reminds me of the lady from Chicago that, on her return from Europe, said how much she had enjoyed the rural parts of France, because, among other things, it was "so delightful to hear the French pheasants singing the mayonnaise to the tune of the Los Angelus". It is impossible to amalgamate coal-tar thoroughly with the pulp in the agitating-tank. In metallurgy, `amalgamate' refers to the combination of mercury with one or both of the precious metals, forming an amalgam, which is an alloy of mercury with another metal. It differs from other alloys, such as brass or bronze, in being made without the aid of heat, inasmuch as mercury is molten at the ordinary temperature. The word comes to us from the Greek. through Old French and means `something soft'. It is a mistake to use technical terms, having a specific meaning, for purposes that are foreign to that meaning. The writer of the quotation is not discussing any combination of metals; he is dealing with the physical process of mixing and is using 'amal-

Mr. B. Neilly: A week or so ago the Secretary was good enough to forward me an advance copy of this paper by Mr. Logan and it was suggested that I comment on it at this meeting. At that time I was not very certain that I would be here, so I committed my thoughts to paper. As a matter of courtesy to Mr. Logan, I sent him a copy of my proposed remarks and I would like to give you just what I sent to him. Appreciating fully Mr. Logan's ability and many sources of information, one naturally hesitates to question anything seriously set forth as his considered opinion. Neither does one of my political stripe like to accuse him of being too 'conservative.? However, in places his paper reminds me of another general manager of a Canadian bank. While I was still Secretary of the Ontario Mining Association, this general manager wrote asking for our forecast on the current year's mineral production, stating that he proposed to refer to such production figures in his annual address to his shareholders. The request was considered very complimentary to the Ontario Mining Association and, in my opinion, justified a great deal of serious study and effort. Finally, the estimate was prepared and forwarded, showing a modest increase over the previous year's total. Picture our surprise and chagrin on reading his address to find that he predicted not an increase but, if you please, a decline of over $10,000,000. Before I cooled off I wrote asking the basis of such a prediction and got a reply to the effect that men in his position had to be ultra conservative in picturing the future.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Minpro plant of the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, Spruce Pine, N. C., is the first of a series being prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on feldspar milling methods and costs in the various feldspar producing areas in the United States. It describes not only the latest practices in feldspar grinding but includes studies of the cost of producing ground feldspar. These cost studies, obviously of interest to every consumer and purchaser of feldspar and to all feldspar grinders, are also of value to the small operator, who is generally prone to understimate his real costs. It describes the latest practices in feldspar milling and includes detailed costs of grinding. The cost tabulations presented show operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Details of costs are given only to the extent that they are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. A description of the recently installed milling unit for the preparation of granular glasspar by graded crushing, and magnetic separation is of particular interest. It illustrates how highly specialized feldspar milling has become, and to what an extent grinders are going to supply consumers with the products best suited for their particular needs.

In the course of the development of the Red Coulee field, northwest of Coutts, Alberta, a considerable amount of information has been gathered by the Department of the Interior regarding the chemical character of waters encountered in the drilling of wells in this area. The writer, in this paper, has undertaken to assemble the available material with the idea of deducing what relations, if any, may exist between the different waters from the same well, and also how these compare with waters encountered in similar horizons in other wells. From no other district, with which the Department of the Interior has had to do, have there been received so many samples of water, and yet not all the waters logged in the drilling reports were sent in for analysis. The information, therefore, herein contained is not as complete as the writer would have desired, but sufficient evidence has been accumulated to indicate some very definite tendencies in the chemical nature of the waters of this field. The drilling of Red Coulee wells has been carried out exclusively by percussive tools. These permit 'dry' drilling, and, consequently, water-sands are recognized when encountered. Had rotary tools been used, information regarding water-sands would have been very meagre, if not entirely lacking, since, in the mudding-off process, water-sands would have been overlooked, with the result that, should water break through into a completed well, its source would not be known and remedial efforts would be greatly handicapped, if not entirely defeated.

THE years 1914-15-16 were a pioneering period in mining, milling, and copper metallurgy generally. It was uncertain just what path the crushing, grinding, and concentrating processes would take. This situation was quite embarrassing to the directors of some of our large porphyry properties, then being equipped for production. Inspiration had already made several designs for its proposed 15,000-ton concentrator, incorporating in them the latest devices developed in the art of gravity concentration, only to have the work vitiated by the rapid march of events. In a little improvised plant, built on ground that is now in the crater of subsidence over the Inspiration- Miami orebodies, flotation was being experimentally ' applied to Inspiration ore by Minerals Separation engineers in 1914, with results indicating that this process would be of major importance in the concentration of the sulfides. How best to apply it, and especially how to crush and grind the ore to the very much finer sizes required for the new process, was a serious question, properly to be answered only by doing it, in full- sized machines, under regular 'operating conditions.

Wire saws have been used for many years in European travertine, marble, and slate quarries. This method of sawing found very limited use in America until 1927 when it was accepted as standard equipment in elate quarries in Pennsylvania where it has been remarkably successful. Details of its operation in slate have been published in a recent bureau report.3 The very limited extent to which the wire saw has been employed in limestone and marble quarries in the United States and the seeming lack of interest even in experimental work to determine its advantages are difficult to explain in vied of its wide use in cutting similar rocks in Europe and its unquestionable advantages in sewing slate in America. In order to encourage improvement in quarry practice the United States Bureau of Mines has endeavored to obtain information as to the extent to which wire saws are used in Europe together with data on the rate and cost of sawing. The information at hand is by no means complete either in territory covered or in details of operation; it nevertheless brings out certain significant features that may be of interest and advantage to quarrymen in the United States.

Intensive work on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys by the U. S. Bureau of Mines has shown that the use of those alloys, which may be produced from our domestic manganese ores, would decrease the ferromanganese requirements of a very large tonnage of our steel by from 60 to 80 per cent and in some cases by 100 per cent. The open-hearth heats made with these alloys have been of excellent quality. The tonnage of our ferro-grade ores Which has been made available by the bureau's ore-dressing studies, combined with the products resulting from such processes as those developed by the bureau and by Bradley for Cuyuna ores, should easily fill our reduced ferromanganese requirements when manganese-silicon alloys and ordinary Spiegel are used in the way described in this report. There are no technical difficulties in the application of this practice, and any difficulties involved in its wide and immediate application would only be those arising from habituated ideas of the necessity of ferromanganese. General acceptance of this practice and development of the available sources of domestic ferro-grade material by already proven processes should make this country independent of foreign ores. HISTORY The limestone deposits of western Pennsylvania have been exploited for many years and have been quarried extensively at West Winfield in Winfield. Township, which lies in the southeastern corner of Butler County.
