In December 2010, a trial of borehole radar technology was conducted to test the usefulness of the technique in better refining the position and geometry of narrow vein orebodies away from the primary data sources of drilling and mapping of development excavations. This paper summarises the reasons why the technique was applied, describes the testing methods selected and summarises the outcomes of the trial.Poor reconciliations of recovered metal from a section of an orebody at Jundee mine site, Western Australia, led to an investigation that identified insufficient understanding of the geometry of a narrow vein orebody as a potential cause. This orebody was situated between mapped development excavations and away from surrounding drill holes. Borehole radar was identified as a possible technique that could supply information on vein location and continuity away from other data sources allowing more accurate orebody modelling and subsequent stope optimisation.A borehole radar instrument (10 - 100 MHz frequency) was inserted into pairs of purpose-drilled boreholes on either side of relatively well-constrained mineralisation and the radar reflection data was collected. This process was repeated in five locations across the mine to represent the most common geological settings, lithologies and orebody varieties encountered at Jundee to determine the suitability of applying the technique in each of these settings. Collected, processed and interpreted radar data was compared to other geology data collected independently for verification and interpretation.Conclusions drawn from the analysis were that the technique could effectively determine the following features of the mineralised veins in the majority of test environments: geometry of veins, magnitude of offsets where structures intersect and orientations of planar structures with short strike length. It has long been recognised that narrow vein mining needs innovative approaches to mine access and mining methods in order to improve the economics of this vital part of the mining industry. The mining equipment used currently requires large openings in narrow vein-type deposits making mining operations uneconomical. In view of this and other shortcomings of the current mining practices, a study was initiated to investigate the potential of using low profile electric loader with mounted conveyor in conjunction with the electric monorail haulage system (EMTS) to load and haul the blasted material, particularly in decline development and main haulages. Computer simulation based on the General Purpose Simulation System/Henrikson (GPSS/H) is used to model the system and evaluate its performance. The results are compared with those for conventional mining using trucks and loaders. The EMTS provides competitive haulage rates in substantially smaller excavations than is currently achievable. According to simulation results, the electric loader in conjunction with the EMTS had the same number of blasts as the conventional system and hence the same advance rate of 3.33 m per 12 hour shift. Narrow vein mining, as most types of mining, faces important geotechnical challenges. The specificity of geotechnical challenges in narrow vein mines stems from the nature of the deposits, which are often inclined, discordant and found within fractured rock or faults or in shear zones within country rock. This complicates the construction of representative geomechanical models and limits the applicability of several engineering design tools. Furthermore, in certain cases, the severity of encountered geotechnical problems is considerably greater in narrow vein than in wider orebodies. This paper provides an overview of geotechnical and other challenges in narrow vein mines with a focus on how these are currently addressed. Of particular concern is the use of manual labour working close to the mining face where there is greater exposure to geomechanical hazards. This review concludes with a particular emphasis on understanding the limitations of commonly used engineering tools and techniques to address geotechnical problems in narrow vein mines.CITATION:Hadjigeorgiou, J, 2012. In the ideal world of an underground mining engineer, all narrow vein orebodies would be perfectly straight and continuous, thus would be a dream to mine. However, this is usually not the case. Narrow vein orebodies generally occur in association with shear zones and while shear zones do form linear trends, they most commonly preserve undulating expressions that need to be closely monitored, particularly when overprinted by post-formed structures. The surge in mines using fibrecrete as a primary form of ground support effectively reduces the time available for geological interpretation down to a 30 minute window between bogging and shotcreting. Thus, if the quality of the data collected is not up to scratch, then there is only a limited ability to reassess using 2D face photographs. To negate this, Xstrata Nickel AustralasiaÆs Cosmos mine has upgraded its data collection procedure. Geological information is now collected using photogrammetry survey, producing 3D images of the drive. Once created, the digital image of the drive is loaded into Vulcan, thus enabling geological interpretation to be carried out along entire drives, between levels and in association with all other data (eg drill holes, seismic data, etc). In addition to this, the 3D image can be used to accurately model the location of the ore, enabling stoping panels to be confidently positioned to maximise grade and minimise dilution. However, with the focus at Cosmos changing from narrow vein mining, to bulk mining methods in a more geotechnically complex terrain, the use of the 3D images has become paramount in understanding the structural geometry. Continual interpretation of the data has enabled drive profiles to be maintained through the increased use of ground support in poor ground and the redesign of development to enable optimal intersection of structures. Nevertheless, while the collection of quality data is important, it is only the effective use of the data, which enables significant gains in understanding.CITATION:Rees, K, 2012. Carbon rich graphite deposits found in Sri Lanka are of inorganic origin and they occur as narrow steeply dipping veins. The vein width of these deposits varies from a few centimetres to metres, with an average vein thickness of 1 m. It is believed that the carbon rich fluid intruded into fracture zones under high pressure and the temperature has crystallised into graphite. This process has also generated many minuscule graphite veins centred on main mineralisation, which has reduced the host rock overall rock mass rating. These discontinuities could also be considered as joints with graphite infill. Graphite mining at Bogala Mines, Sri Lanka is a unique example of narrow vein mining faced with numerous wall stability issues resulting from weak graphite infilled joints.The Bogala vein type graphite orebody has an average vein width of 1 m. Overhand cut-and-fill mining method is used for stoping. The stope consists of two boundary winzes for material handling, access and ventilation. Mining is done on the strike of the vein and the average mining slice height is 2 m. A void to the height of one mined slice is left below the mining level during mining. Waste rock resulting from vein blasting and mine development is dropped into this void as fill rock. Any void height left greater than a single slice height will increase stresses in the stoping zone. This will increase formation of rock blocks and their effective separation from wall rocks. Split miniscule veins occurring around main mineralisation intensifies rock block formation in an environment of mining induced stress release. Consequently, any rock blocks sliding into stopes on graphite infilled joints will behave under constant normal stiffness (CNS) conditions and their shear strength will converge rapidly towards remoulded shear strength of graphite alone. Unlike with general infill deposited in joints, graphite has a very low friction angle and with its slippery nature, a small thickness may affect in great deal to reduce joint shear strength.In addition to immediate filling of excavated voids, controlled vein blasting and spot bolting have improved mine safety. Furthermore, rock bolts connected to each other through iron plates and anchored to anchor bolts installed in non-fractured solid rock are practiced to stabilise rock falls and wedge failures in narrow vein graphite mining. This paper gives a review of promising technologies for phosphate processing, and covers flotation, analysis and process control, as well as tailings treatment and utilization. Air bubbles of less than a µm in size, combined with relatively large bubbles, have been demonstrated, both in the lab and on a pilot scale, to improve flotation dramatically, by reducing reagent use while improving product grade. Innovative use of polymers has allowed rapid dewatering of fine tailings with a final product that does not segregate. The first online laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzer was created, allowing rapid analysis of wet samples using the laser technology. Many large commercial projects are successfully pursuing the utilization of phosphogypsum.

The recovery of manganese from lower-grade resources has been studied for a number of years. Of key importance in prior work was the discovery that higher-valent manganese can be readily leached with sulfurous acid. This eliminates the need for high-temperature reduction roasting that is conventionally used in processing high-grade material. High-temperature roasting is energy intensive, emits a large amount of carbon dioxide and would not be economical for processing lower grade material. While the prior work provides important information for extracting manganese from lower-grade resources, the production of unwanted byproducts and high water and energy usage has limited its commercial use. This paper describes the results from laboratory work that demonstrate solutions to problems that to this point have precluded commercial development. Preliminary mass and energy balances show that a significant opportunity exists in producing manganese with this hydrometallurgical scheme in a low-cost, environmentally friendly manner. The emphasis of the work is on low water use, low overall energy use and economic destruction of unwanted byproducts.

Five kaolin crudes from the state of Georgia in the U.S. were investigated for processability with chemically enhanced magnetic separation (CEMS) technologies developed by Cytec. The technologies used magnetic reagent alone or in conjunction with specialty chemicals to selectively agglomerate and magnetize the desired minerals (impurities) to be removed by the conventional magnetic separation equipment. All crudes indicated treatability using CEMS. Results indicated that CEMS technology could be applied to different kaolin crudes to obtain a product with titanium impurities less than 0.6% TiO2 from individual crudes. The features and benefits of the technologies were also reviewed.

Gravity separators such as spirals are commonly used in multistage cleaning and scavenging circuits to improve the quality and recovery of concentrates produced in the industrial minerals industry. Unfortunately, field surveys suggest that many industrial operations are poorly configured in terms of equipment layout. This shortcoming can often be attributed to a failure by engineers to make use of fundamental process engineering tools for circuit design. One of the most important of these is linear circuit analysis. This powerful tool makes it possible to mathematically compare the relative efficiency of circuit configurations in advance of experimental testing. This article provides a basic review of the linear circuit analysis concept and discusses some of the key insights it provides for the layout of multistage circuits. An industrial case study is provided to show the tremendous impact that this process engineering tool can have on the design of multistage spiral circuits in a heavy mineral wet plant.

Since the 1940s, decanter centrifuges have become more important for increasingly complex solid-liquid or solid-liquid-liquid separation processes. Sometimes processed industrial or metalliferous minerals are abrasive or are treated with corrosive chemical agents. Traditional mining applications include the processing of coal, gravel and other products, where low-speed decanters, as well as screen bowl decanters and filters, dominate. These have been increasingly replaced by high-speed decanters during the last decade. Decanter centrifuges also started to play a key role in applications such as drilling muds, processing carbonates and separating SX crud in copper platinum ore concentrations of nickel and gold. Communication between machine producers and mineral processing engineers is vital for the right choice of materials and the design of the right decanter centrifuge for the individual process.

A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

The operation at Phu Kham commenced design and construction in early 2006 and was commissioned in May 2008. This paper will examine and discuss the project from the inception of flow sheet development and equipment selection, equipment design and manufacture, construction, commissioning and ramp up to full production. The paper will touch on the strategies employed to achieve a short schedule and the efficient use of capital, but with the main emphasis on the grinding circuit. Various challenges during the early years of operation will be discussed including the effect of ore characteristics, including competency, on the performance of the grinding circuit. Actions to overcome these challenges and to enhance performance will also be discussed. Finally, current and future plans to improve the performance of the grinding circuit and the overall plant will be summarised.

As in other industries, companies engaged in mining and extraction use and develop intellectual property (?IP?) in the form of new technologies or production processes. The development of IP assets in mining may occur as a byproduct of ongoing operations, or result from investment in dedicated R&D efforts. New technology may lower costs, increase quality of output, and/or increase operational efficiency or safety. Key business questions with respect to any new technology are how best to use IP assets, how to protect them and how to derive value from them. IP assets can provide a competitive advantage to a developing firm that uses the technology to improve its operating results. The developing firm can preclude others from using the technology if it believes that is the best way to exploit the technology?s value. Or, it can be shared with others taking care to ensure rights are maintained, thereby generating royalty income or strategic value through cross licensing or other business relationships. Either way, in order to fully realize the maximum economic benefit, innovators must protect the IP assets and control their dissemination.

The theme of the 2012 North American Tunneling conference (NAT) was ?Tunneling: Driving Value.? This theme best reflects where the tunneling and underground construction industry is to-day. Major advances that have been made in technologies have provided tremendous improvements in productivity, which, in turn, have allowed the industry to deliver more cost-effective and less disruptive solutions to the nation?s infrastructure needs. Despite a weak economy, domestically and globally, cities and states continue to spend billions on infrastructure improvements. For the underground construction industry, that means more transportation and water, wastewater, storm water projects and other underground structures. And, for each project completed, underground construction and tunneling technology grows. The NAT conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME, provides an outlet for technology transfers among professionals. This year?s conference, held in Indianapolis, IN June 24-27, attracted 918 attendees, up from 803 at the last NAT in 2010. The accompanying exhibit also featured 116 exhibitors occupying 140 booths. That was up from 108 booths in 2010. So, the meeting continues to grow as underground construction professionals throughout the world seek to learn from their peers.

The West Lynn Canal subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) is defined by Lynn Canal on the east, Davidson Glacier to the north, Icy Strait to the south and the Glacier Bay National Park Boundary to the west (figs. C-l and C-2). This area extends along the main-land west of Juneau (across Lynn Canal) northerly, to approximately 20 miles south of the city of Haines. The only roads in the area are relatively new logging roads at the southern end constructed to support a U.S. Forest Service timber sale. There is also local road access near the community of Excursion Inlet. Access to the remainder of the region is either by boat, aircraft, or 'foot. Helicopters provide the only time effective access to all but the coastal parts of the West Lynn Canal subarea. Coastal areas may be reached by small boat or float aircraft. There is an unimproved dirt airstrip just north of the mouth of the Endicott River. This airstrip is suitable for use by light aircraft. The subarea lies within the Tongass National Forest and is managed by the Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service. Approximately two-thirds of the forest lands are open to mineral entry under the current Tongass Land Management plan. The remaining forest lands comprise the Endicott River Wilderness area, which is closed to mineral entry. Private lands within the study area are sparse, with scattered homestead tracts along the coastal regions and in the Excursion Inlet area. Sealaska (Southeast Alaska Regional Native Corporation) also has land selections in the southern Chilkat Range. Tidal and submerged lands are owned by the State of Alaska.

"The removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from coking wastewater was experimentally investigated using a three-dimensional electrode reactor. The experimental results showed that the refractory organics in coking wastewater can be effectively removed by this process, and COD removal efficiency was affected by the operating parameters, such as electrolytic retention time, particle electrode dosage, initial pH, current density, aeration amount and electrical conductivity. The experimental results show that the three-dimensional electrode could have a COD removal efficiency of more than 60% and a running cost of no more than 6 YUAN (RMB)/t. This indicates the great potential of a three-dimensional electrode reactor in engineering applications as an advanced treatment methods for coking wastewater.IntroductionCoking wastewater is generated from coal coking, coal gas purification, and by-product recovery processes of coking; it is composed of phenolic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ammonia, cyanide, polycyclic nitrogen-containing aromatics, acyclic compounds, etc. Most of these constituents are refractory, poorly biodegradabile, toxic and carcinogenic [1-3]. Currently, coking wastewater is usually treated by different forms of A/O biological nitrogen removal processes as the primary treatment means, but the aforementioned processes are not efficient enough to meet the requirements of the National Discharge Standard in China (GB13456-1992). According to the continuous requirement on improving environmental protection for the coking industry (revised 2008), increasing wastewater utilization ratios and reducing the discharge of effluent in the coke industry have to be implemented for cleaner production and sustainable development. Therefore, advanced technologies need to be developed to treat coking wastewater and reutilize the product as industrial cooling water, which would be one of the best choices to achieve zero discharge of wastewater and reduce water consumption per ton of steel produced. In this study, a three-dimensional fluidized bed electrode reactor was adopted for the advanced treatment of coking wastewater, and the effects of operating conditions, including particle dosage, initial pH, current density, supporting electrolyte, as well as aeration amount on the COD removal rate, were investigated. Its running costs were also estimated."

Under the first phase of this contract as reported in the Phase I report it was determined that certain types of commercially available molded case breakers are capable of interrupting mine dc power supplies of nominally 300 volts or 600 volts rating. These circuit breakers incorporate conventional overcurrent trip units but also can be operated by means of low power signals fed to a shunt trip coil. Further development in the Phase I program produced a means whereby a discriminating circuit breaker detector unit could sense the presence of illegitimate loads on the dc electrical system and cause the circuit breaker to trip. The detector unit operated by detecting the presence of 3000 Hz currents which were generated in the illegitimate loads by means of a 12 volt, 3000 Hz signal applied to the dc system. Further development of the program has continued in Phase II with the aim of verifying the practicability of the complete discriminating circuit breaker concept and developing other types of equipments required to implement a system. These other equipments include electronic means for raising the apparent impedance of high power legitimate loads and static filters for smaller loads. The results of laboratory work and limited underground tests have been successful. This report describes the system and the tests that have been conducted on the various equipments that comprise the complete Discriminating Circuit Breaker Concept.

"In conventional investment casting process of aluminium alloys for the application of the aerospace industry, to assure the quality of the final casting, usually the foundry uses large runner system which results in low yield, high energy consumption and high GHGs emission. In one case of this investigation, the yield is between 5 ~ 10% which means that the current casting process wastes large amount of energy and generates lots of scraps. By applying a new casting method, the bulky runner system and the melting/holding time are significantly reduced, the quality of the casting is improved, and in the meantime the related energy consumption and GHGs emission are significantly decreased. In the investigation, the energy efficiencies and GHGs emission between the current and traditional processes are calculated and compared.1. IntroductionAs one of the conventional casting process, Investment Casting Process (ICP) and its applications can be traced to thousand years ago [l]. In current casting industry, ICP still plays an important role in the production of small and precious castings with high quality requirements in automobile and aerospace industries. Both casting quality and manufacturing costs which mainly consist of energy costs have crucial effects on the competitiveness of castings in the market. In the production of aluminium alloy castings using ICP, the energy cost and energy efficiency of a casting facility depend mainly on the efficiency of its melting and heat treating performance. In association with the two performances, more than 60 % of the total process energy costs are symbolised in a typical casting facility [2]. Additionally, in conventional ICP of aluminium alloys for the application of the aerospace, to assure the quality of the final casting, typically the foundry uses huge runner system including big risers/feeders which cause low yield, creates lots of scraps and generates high energy consumption. Consequently, there are huge opportunities for casting industry to choose the best practices for potential energy saving. Furthermore, the reasons such as the stringent limitation of environmental legislation in Europe and the pressure of the rising energy price force the casting industry to reduce the energy consumption and greenhouse gases (GHGs) em1ss10n."
