There is an indication that high-pressure roller milling promotes selective liberation due to preferential breakage along the mineral boundaries. A study was undertaken to compare the degree of liberation obtained by high-pressure roller milling with that of conventional ball milling. Coals with different HGI's were ground in a high-pressure roller mill and a ball mill to produce products with similar size distributions. The products were then subjected to float-sink separations to determine the degree of liberation. Also, the relative cleanabilities were compared by separating the ground products by froth flotation. The results from this study are presented in the paper.

This paper describes the design, equipment selection and onshore fabrication of the largest facilities module ever installed in a single lift in the Gulf of Mexico. Measuring 35.5 x 70.1 x 21.3 m (110 x 230 x 70 ft), the three operating level structure houses Frasch process sulfur mining equipment and weighed nearly 49 million N (5500 tons) during lift. An operating weight of over 74 million N (8300 st) combines with bridge reactions acting on the in-place module and results in a total operating vertical load on the supporting platform deck of about 107 million N (12,000 tons). A Vierendeel truss structural system was selected for framing the module to allow maximum equipment access and routing flexibility for complex, insulated large diameter process piping. Research and finite element analysis of crimp plate siding behavior in shear was carried out during selection of siding type for the module. An interactive design sequence was carried out that incorporated in-place operational criteria, onshore fabrication considerations, complex process equipment requirements, plus load-out, ocean transport and offshore lift analyses. Project schedule dictated that design, procurement and fabrication be fast-tracked with parallel activities accelerated to the maximum extent possible. Design and construction of this largest and most complex module was done concurrently with 52 other components of the project including jackets, decks, process and living quarters modules as well as two 122 x 22 m (400 x 72 ft) sulfur tankers. Total tonnage of steel structures for the project exceeded 90.7 kt (100,000 st). The 5 kt (5500 st) mining module proved the viability and costeffectiveness of larger modules than commonly used in Gulf of Mexico waters. This technical advance can be matched with economic opportunity for other large-scale offshore installations.

The gold mining and ore processing operations of Minera Yanacocha S.A. are 10cated in an area 4,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes same 600 km north of Lima and 20 km north of Cajamarca. The joint venture partners are Newmont Second Capital (USA); Compania Minera Condesa (Peril); Mine Or (France) and the IFC. Newmont manages the operation. The Yanacocha district comprises several areas with mineralization evidence. The first ore with minable reserves of 28 million tonnes of ore assaying about 1.4 gpt Au is called Carachugo and is being mined and treated at the rate of 14,000 tonnes of ore per day by open pit mining methods. ROM ore is dump leached and the gold recovered in a Merrill Crowe plant. The plant design incorporates some unusual considerations to overcome the problems of the high rainfall in this area and assure the protection of the environment.

The prediction and assessment of the reactivity of acid mine tailings has been a subject of numerous studies. The conventional approaches such as sulfur content, pH, net acid generating capacity and conductivity are used for assessing reactivity of the tailings. In this paper a new non-invasive Impedance Spectroscopy (IS) technique is used for the determination of reactivity and acid mine potential of tailings. This technique is also used to establish the long term stability and leaching propensity of the tailings agglomerated with alkaline binders.

Since the establishment of the CANMET Experimental Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec in 1991, research activities in rock fragmentation have been carried out not only in the underground laboratory but also in production mines in the north-west Quebec region. Among the instruments available for rock fragmentation, the Kodak EktaPro 1000 Motion Analyzer (also called the high speed video system) has been one of the most useful tools for monitoring blasts in both underground and open pit. This system is capable of recording events at rates from 50 to 12,000 frames per second (fps). The buffer memory has a capacity of storing 2050 images. To use this system in the underground, a steel box was made with a bullet-proof glass in the front to protect the camera. The processing and recording equipment are placed in an aluminum case which can be located about 30 m away from the camera via an extension cable. For each blast monitored, high frequency geophones and accelerometers were used to monitor ground vibrations and give a timing reference of the explosive detonations to correlate with the observation of the captured images.

In 1989 natural industrial diamonds counted for 55% of the world's natural diamond production. Australia is currently the leading producer (35%). Zaire is the second largest producer (19%). of what is primarily industrial grade rather than gem grade. Botswana (17%) is third, with the former USSR (15%) fourth, and the Republic of South Africa (8%) fifth. Diamonds are also mined in Angola, Namibia, the Ivory Coast, the Central African Republic, Ghana, Tanzania, Guinea, and other African countries. In the Western Hemisphere, Brazil is the principal producer, with some production from Venezuela and Guyana [(Fig. 1)]. A very small output of diamonds is mined today in India, which was the first source of commercial production. In the United States, efforts at commercial diamond mining have been confined to a small area near Murfreesboro, AR. The first diamond was found in a pipe there in 1906. Small scale trial mining has not, however, proved economical. Since diamonds were first discovered more than 2,000 years ago, only about 380 t have been mined. In order to obtain 1 g (5 metric carats) of diamonds, it is necessary to remove and process approximately 25 t of rock. Recovering this small percentage involves a combination of highly developed techniques in mining and extremely sophisticated processes in diamond recovery. END USES Diamonds are used for two unrelated end uses: gem diamonds are jewels of great beauty, while industrial diamonds are essential materials of modem industry. Although imitation stones are substituted for the gem diamond, none of these matches its properties sufficiently well to offer real competition. Synthetic industrial diamonds are now of a quality and size that permit them to be substituted for natural diamonds in numerous industrial applications. For example, synthetic diamonds are available today in sizes up to 100 stones per carat (1.2 to 1.4 mm). In addition, polycrystalline synthetic diamond inserts, such as De Beers Syndite", General Electric's Compaxa and Stratapax", and Megadiamond's Megapax" have replaced natural diamonds in turning tools, mining and oil drilling bits, and dressing tool applications. Industrial Diamonds The diamond is by far the most important industrial abrasive. As recently as 50 years ago, consumption of industrial diamonds was less than that of gem diamonds, but since that time, industrial use has grown to a position of great dominance. During the six-year period 1929 to 1934, the material produced for industrial use amounted to about 74% by weight of the world's total output of diamonds. In 1989 the percentage of natural industrial diamonds mined in the world was 55%. When synthetic industrial diamonds are added to the natural industrial diamond figures, this percentage becomes 87% of total world diamond production including gems, near gems, industrial, and synthetic stones. The many uses responsible for these significant increases are dependent on the properties of the diamond, including hardness, cleavage, and parting, optical characteristics, presence of sharp points and edges, and capacity for taking and maintaining a high polish. The utilitarian role of the diamond was confined primarily to lapidary products until the industrial revolution, which created the first demand for diamond as an industrial tool. In 1777, a British inventor and instrument maker, Jesse Ramsden, used a diamond to cut a precision screw for an engine that he had invented. The first authentic description of industrial diamonds being set in a saw was recorded in 1854 by a Frenchman, Durnain. Eight years later a Swiss watchmaker, Jean Leschot, developed the first diamond drill bit for use in a hand operated machine, which was employed to drill blastholes in rock. In 1864, diamond bits were put to their severest test up to that time in the construction of the Mont Cenis Tunnel in the Alps. A few years later a steam-powered diamond drill with a speed of 30 rpm was able to penetrate rock at the modest rate of 0.3 m/hr. As the industrial revolution gained momentum on both sides of the Atlantic, metal replaced wood and machines replaced people. Thus the foundation was laid for precision engineering and the recognition of diamonds as an indispensable tool of industry. The next major demand for industrial diamonds came after World War I with the development of cemented carbide cutting tools. Diamond was found to be the most effective medium for finishing and grinding the new ultrahard metal. This discovery rapidly increased the demand for industrial diamonds. The availability of inexpensive diamond material inspired tremendous research into applications. By 1935, the first successful phenol-resin grinding wheel containing diamond had been marketed. Soon afterward, the metal-bonded and vitrified diamond wheels were produced, and, as the matrices and bonds that held the diamond grit in place began to improve, the popularity of diamond grinding wheels grew. The outbreak of World War II, and the accompanying increase in use of hard-metal tools in the munitions industry, increased the demand for industrial diamonds. Since about 1950, the development of ultrahard ceramics, semi- conductor materials, plastics, and exotic metal alloys has further consolidated the diamond's position as an indispensable tool of industry. Only diamond is hard enough to cut these superhard materials with the precision, speed, and economy that industry demands today. Special machines equipped with industrial diamonds are used to remove bumps from concrete runways and highways and to modify highway surfaces in order to prevent skid accidents. Increasing transportation costs, clean air regulations and the decreasing availability of landfill space are factors in the increased interest in the utilization of low cost disposal sites for coal combustion residues (CCR). Inactive surface and underground coal mines can satisfy the conditions for stable CCR disposal sites, and subsurface CCR injection can be beneficial in reducing the amount of acid mine drainage (AMD) often produced at such sites. The material is expected to add alkalinity to the subsurface environment and to decrease the permeability and porosity of the buried spoil. Both mechanisms can reduce the amount of acid normally generated at a mine site. The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with an independent coal company in a test of subsurface injection of a mixture of fly ash, from conventional power plants or from fluidized bed combustion (FBC) , with AMD sludge into a reclaimed surface mine. Changes in water quality parameters and the concentration of heavy metals in water samples from wells and seeps are being used to assess the effect of CCR injection. The preliminary results discussed here indicate that improvement in subsurface water quality was related to fly ash injection and that components of the fly ash were stable in the acid environment.

"Mechanical alloying is a dry, high energy ball milling process which has been used to synthesize metallic powders in the solid state. The present study use this technique to synthesize Cu-base shape memory alloy powder from commercial Cu70Zn30, Cu86Zn14 and element AI powders. The evolution and formation of shape memory alloy powder were monitored using X-ray diffraction and microscopy. It was observed that shape memory alloy powder started to form after 1.8 ks of mechanical alloying. ? phase was clearly detected after 3.6 ks of mechanical alloying. The intensity of X-ray diffraction of the y phase increased when mechanical alloying duration was prolonged indicating an increase in the amount of y phase. Microstructure observation showed different stages of formation of alloyed powders: welding between powders and formation of layered structure, deformation and fracturing of layered structure, and finally the formation of alloyed powders.IntroductionMechanical alloying (MA) is a process used for producing powders with controlled and extremely fine microstructure. It was original developed in 1966 (1) to produce aNi-based superalloy combining oxide dispersion strengthening with gamma prime precipitation hardening. In recent years this technique has been used in producing a wide range of materials including intermetallic compounds (2, 3), amorphous materials (4-6) and other materials (7-9). In MA, a blend of powders is subjected to highly energetic compressive collision. The powder panicles are welded and fractured during ball milling. Therefore, it is essential that at least one of powders should be ductile to act as combiner. It has however been found that brittle components without soft element can also be mechanically alloyed (10), even ceramic powders (11).The present work aims to study the mechanism of formation of shape memory alloy powder during MA."

Over 10 percent of the United States of America or 41 percent of the Federal lands is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as Public Lands. The mission is to manage the use of these lands and their resources. The way in which BLM carries out its mission is being refocused under the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management for the benefit of various human needs including environmental, social and economic values. The Bureau is developing methods to integrate the renewable and non-renewable resources programs into the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management. Exploration, development and extraction of energy or mineral resources on Public Lands are affected. The statements that following the next few pages are my personal views as a scientist (economic geologist -mining technologist) who is and has been involved for the last twenty years in the multiple-use management of Public Lands. They are not necessarily the position of the Bureau of Land Management, although much of the information on which I base my views comes from my experience with the BLM. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages over 10 percent of the United States (270 million acres or 108 million hectares) which is 41 percent of the Federal Lands. Lands managed by BLM are known as Public Lands as opposed to the National Forest Lands which are Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 which in Sec. 102 states ??that it is the policy of the United States (7) ?that management be on the basis of multiple use and sustained yield??, the mission of the BLM is rapidly refocused under the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystems-based management for the benefit of the environment, human needs and socio-economic values.

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

Experiments have been conducted to assess the feasibility of capturing bearing emissions arsenic with CaO during the roasting of enargite (Cu3AsS4). Enargite/CaO mixtures have been heat treated in air, nitrogen or oxygen for various times and the products of reaction analysed by X-ray diffraction and cleaned analysis. The results show that substantial capture of arsenic can be achieved via the formation of calcium arsenates and/or calcium arsenides. In addition significant capture of sulphur is achieved by the formation of calcium sulphate andlor sulphide. Complete conversion to copper sulphide with total removal of arsenic can be achieved within 30 minutes at 700°C. Further heat treatment in air or oxygen leads to the formation of copper oxide and copper oxysulphate. Without optimisation of reaction conditions, it has proved possible to achieve retention of in excess of 85% of the arsenic content of enargite in the form of calcium arsenates.

To acquire knowledge on the general trend of primary and supplemental supports used in tailgates of US longwall mines a survey of 76 mines with 86 longwall panels was carried out in the summer of 1993. This paper attempts to provide some insight on most commonly used support types as primary and supplemental supports in tailgates. Analysis of the surveyed data show that fully grouted resin bolts and cribs are the most commonly used primary and supplemental supports in tailgates in longwall mines of USA.

The problem of cross-hole explosive malfunctioning in rock blasting (including sympathetic detonation, desensitization and cut-offs) is a function of delay and spacing in a blast which should be designed to avoid such occurrences. On a delay-spacing chart, the phenomenon of explosive malfunctioning is explained by dividing the chart into different regions, while the shape and size of each region could vary from one explosive to the other. Over seventy blasts have been carried out at the CANMET Experimental Mine to identify the malfunctioning characteristics of specific emulsion, water-gel and dynamite explosives. In each experiment, two parallel blastholes, 32 mm in diameter and 1.7 m deep, were drilled downwards in an underground drift.

Xidagou is the largest waste water discharge channel of the Anshan Iron and Steel Complex (AISC) with average flow rate of 8000 cubic meters per hour, which is about 75% of the total effluent of the AISC. The waste water from Xidagou seriously polluted the Taizi River Basin. In order to meet the Chinese Class V Standard for Surface Water Discharge and the Standard for Recycled Industrial Water Reuse, with the aid of the World Bank, the AISC began the treatability studies in 1991. Based on the bench-scale test, the AISC carried out pilot-scale treatability studies on three different treatment processes and five different chemical coagulants for more than half a year in 1992. The study results show that the processes of primary sedimentation- chemical mixing and flocculation-secondary sedimentation-filtration can meet the requirement and that PFS and PAM are effective and economic chemical coagulants.

This paper focuses on the use of a numerical tool known as the discrete element method (DEM) to study the motion of ball charge in ball mills. DEM is employed to simulate the motion of individual balls. While doing so, the effect of liner design on the grinding performance of the mill is studied. Two important, factors, such as the configuration of the liner and the geometry of the lifting surfaces, are correlated with the overall mill performance. An attempt is made to show the effectiveness of the lifter bars in transmitting power from the mill shell to the interior of the mill, with particular emphasis on large diameter mills.

On the basis of tonnage, the sand and gravel industry is the second largest nonfuel mineral industry in the United States. In 1990, the production of sand and gravel was 927 Mt valued at $3.4 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 126 Mt, together with Texas, Washington, Michigan, and Ohio, account for 36% of the total production in the nation (Table 1). In commercial usage, sand applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 Sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No. 4 Sieve (4.76 mm openings). Gravel consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 88.9 mm maximum size. The construction industry consumes 97% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see chapter on Industrial Sand and Sandstone and Glass Raw Materials). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material that is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster. Sand and gravel is also used as construction fill, road base and subbase, and decorative material. Portland Cement Concrete Aggregates: Portland cement concrete consists of sand and gravel surrounded and held together by hardened portland cement paste. Concrete mixes commonly contain 15 to 20% water, 7 to 14% cement, and66 to 78% aggregate. Sand and gravel used as concrete aggregate have to meet many requirements (Goldman and Reining, 1983). Premature deterioration of concrete has been traced in many instances to the use of unsuitable aggregates. Asphaltic Aggregate: Asphaltic mixtures used predominantly for paving consist of combinations of sand, gravel, and mineral filler (material finer than 0.076 mm), uniformly coated and mixed with asphalt produced in the refining of petroleum. Sand and gravel used as asphaltic aggregate must meet the same general physical requirements as materials used for portland cement aggregate. GEOLOGY General Requirements of Aggregates Construction aggregate has many requirements that are difficult to meet if only unprocessed material from natural deposits is used. Suitable material is composed of clean, uncoated, properly shaped particles that are sound and durable. Soundness and durability are terms used to denote the ability of aggregates to retain a uniform physical and chemical state over a long period of time so as not to disintegrate when exposed to weathering and other destructive processes. Individual particles must be tough and firm, possessing the strength to resist physical stresses and chemical and physical changes, that may cause swelling, cracking, softening, and leaching. The aggregate should not be contaminated by excessive clayey material, silt, mica, organic matter, chemical salts, and surface coatings. Physical Properties: The quality of aggregate depends upon its physical and chemical properties. These, in turn, may be inherent mineralogical and textural features of the rock or may be the effects of later changes such as tectonics, mechanical or chemical weathering, or incrustations. The physical properties most significant for concrete use are: 1) abundance and nature of fractures and pores, 2) particle shape and surface texture, and 3) volume changes which may occur because of freezing and thawing or wetting and drying. An aggregate is considered to be physically sound if it is adequately strong and capable of resisting the agencies of weathering without disruption or decomposition. Minerals or rock particles that are physically weak, extremely water absorptive, and easily cleavable are susceptible to breakdown. The use of such materials in concrete reduces strength or leads to early deterioration by promoting weak bond between cement and aggregate, or by inducing cracking, spalling, or popouts. Severely weathered, soft, micaceous, or porous materials may cause localized stresses to develop in concrete by swelling and shrinking during wetting and drying or freezing and thawing cycles. Physical Suitability of the Various Rock Types. Sedimentary rocks have a wide range in physical and chemical qualities. Sand- stones and limestones, if hard and dense, are ordinarily satisfactory, but many sandstones are friable and excessively porous and commonly are clay-bearing. Shales generally make poor aggregate material, being soft, weak, and absorptive. Most igneous rocks are satisfactory, being normally hard, tough, and dense. Tuffs and certain flow rocks may be extremely porous and have high water absorption and low strength. Metamorphic rocks differ in character. Most quartzites are massive, tough, and dense. Fine-grained marbles are usually durable, but coarse-grained marbles have low abrasion resistance. Gneisses are ordinarily very tough and durable. Some schists contain micaceous minerals that are undesirable because they are soft, laminated, and absorptive. Micaceous minerals are susceptible to splitting along cleavage planes and thereby impair particle strength and durability. Some schists and slates in particular are thinly laminated and tend to assume flat slabby shapes that lack strength-and do not pack well. Any or all of these rock types may be rendered undesirable because of harmful exterior coatings. Weathering processes, particularly the action of ground waters, deposit these coatings. The most common coatings are calcium carbonate, clay, silt, opal, chalcedony, iron oxide, manganese oxide, and gypsum. Particles with these coatings are undesirable as aggregates because the bond between particle and coating may be weak, and decreasing the strength of the aggregate-cement bond.

Two hundred and thirty million tons of coal! That is what the Burlington Northern (BN) railroad anticipates that it and the Chicago North Western railroad (CNW) will haul out of the southern Powder River Basin l (see map on page 966) in 1994. Put that 209 Mt (230 million st) into railroad perspective. Current average train size is 113 cars. With each car transporting 94 t (103.5 st) of coal, each train averages 10.6 kt (11,700 st) of coal. Simple division shows that 209 Mt (230 million st) of coal equals 19,658 trains a year. So BN and the CNW must move 54 loads a day out of the Basin. Every load, of course, has an empty side of its cycle. This means that 54 loads a day translates into 108 total trains a day, or 39,420 trains a year through the southern PRB.

The paper describes the new design criteria and control strategies for multi-density dense medium separation (DMS) circuits. The role of the multi-density separation is discussed, and it is emphasized that for many processing problems -related to minerals and coals -it may be very important to perform two or more cuts at different densities in order to obtain a remarkable improvement in quality of products, process efficiency and economy. The two-density separation by dense medium cyclones was generally performed using two dense medium plants in sequence. In contrast to the former technology, the multi-density separation can now be performed by using a single medium circuit composed of different interconnected medium sumps. The sumps, one for each density, are fed with different medium streams selected according to their density, size composition and content in non-magnetic contaminant in such a way that the rheological properties of the media are optimized. This new technology is based on dynamic systems to density the medium, on the size-density segregation of the medium in the cyclones and separating devices and on accurate control systems for the density, viscosity and stability of the dense media of the different sumps. The present paper reports on the theoretical basis for the new, advanced medium circuits and on the systems for the control of the densities and of the rheological properties of the dense media. A typical circuit for a two-density separation is also described, and some industrial applications reported and discussed.

"The use of self-propagating combustion reactions to synthesize metallic, ceramic, and composite materials is described. The limitation of this process because of the porous nature of its products is discussed. The formation of dense bodies through the simultaneous application of pressure is shown for a metal-matrix composite. The effect of an external electric field on the synthesis of ceramic and composites is described. The nature of the effect of the field on the mechanism of synthesis is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The use of the self-propagating combustion to synthesize intermetallic thin films is presented for the Ni-Al and Ti-Al cases. The formation of functionally gradient materials (FGM) by centrifugally-assisted self-propagating high-temperature synthesis is described.IntroductionThe use of self-propagating combustion reactions for the synthesis of a large number of simple and complex materials has been described in numerous publications. These have been amply discussed in several review articles [1-4].
