Hall measurements have been made on three groups of silicon samples, which were implanted with boron, aluininunz, and phosphorus ions. Boron and phosphorus implants show essentially bulk properties when annealed under previously determined conditions, i.e., 15 min at 80O°C for boron and 10 mirz at 600°C for phosphorus. Bulk properties were also observed in alu?rrilzum-implanted samples when ion concentrations were below 1015 cm-'; however, strange low- terrzperalure behavior and a falloff in cavrier concenlralion was observed for sarnples with ion concenlration abozle loL5 ern-'. This can be attributed to solid-solubility effects since the average bulk concentration f0.r the sample exhibiting bulk properties was below the reported solubility limit for aluminum, while the other samples were above the limit. A detailed study of the annealirzg process indicates that mobilities reach bulk c~alues in phosphorus implants at 250DC, in alutninurn ivnplanls a1 500°C, and in boron implants at 700°C. A simple rnodel has been proposed to fit the annealing data. THE technique of semiconductor doping by direct injection of energetic ions is being actively investigated at this Center. Previously published results from this laboratory have been concerned with the investigation of implanted profiles in silicon and the electrical properties of the resultant p-n structures.1'2 Diode properties have been reported for junctions produced by implantation of boron ions and aluminum ions in n-type silicon and phosphorus ions in p-type silicon. Reverse current characteristics, as well as electron diffraction data, have indicated that the damage to the structure produced by the energetic ions during the stopping process can be minimized by a gentle anneal. The time-temperature conditions for this process have been determined by sheet resistivity studies.3 Electrical profiles of implanted phosphorus ions which have been determined by a differential sheet conductivity technique are based on the assumption that the carrier mobilities and activation energies for ionization are the same as in bulk silicon. These assumptions have been substantiated experimentally by measurement of Hall constants and resistivities of these implanted structures and the results are presented herein. After establishing the bulk property equivalence of the annealed layers, a more detailed examination of the annealing process was undertaken. The sheet resistivity technique initially used to determine anneal conditions has been broadened to include Hall constants and mobility behavior with anneal conditions. PROCEDURE The three groups of samples prepared for Hall measurements were implanted with mass-separated beams of boron, aluminum, and phosphorus ions. Ion concentrations are equivalent surface concentration and they have been determined from beam current measurements during implantation. Implant conditions for the samples are shown in Table I. In all cases, the samples had previously been angle-lapped on one edge and the junction delineated with an HF-copper sulfate solution. The surfaces of the implanted regions of the samples were exposed to the delineating solution and in the case of the "n"-type phosphorus-implanted areas it was later discovered that a finite amount of surface could be etched by this solution. This is discussed in the section on results. The implanted samples were ultrasonically cut into the conventional six-probe configuration shown in Fig. l.* In the annealing studies, for which the meas- urements were taken at room temperature, the sample holder was a Bakelite jig incorporating tungsten mechanical probes. The other measurements were taken using a conventional liquid-nitrogen cryostat, in which the temperature could be varied from 77" to about 400°K. For these measurements, 10-mil aluminum dots were evaporated onto the samples and alloyed with the silicon at 530°C for 15 min. The samples were then mounted in flat-packs, and gold wires were bonded to the aluminum dots. The electrical measurements were made with either a Leeds & Northrup K-5 Potentiometer, a Keithley 147 Nanovolt Null Detector, or a Keithley 601 Electrometer. No external bias was applied to the substrate. There is an inherent self-biasing arrangement at one or the other of the current contacts (depending upon the polarity), and this suffices to limit the current flow to the implanted layer. The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory-scale investigation of grouting mixtures containing iron or aluminum to determine the existence of health or explosion hazards, due respectively to oxygen depletion or hydrogen emission. Mixtures containing iron created an oxygen deficiency in less than 24 hours and released small amounts of hydrogen; a health hazard could occur but only under extremely unfavorable conditions. Mixtures containing aluminum released little hydrogen and consumed little oxygen; however, if improper on-site mixing yielded high local metallic aluminum concentrations, enough hydrogen might be released to produce an explosive atmosphere in a confined space.

"The metalliferous deposits of Vancouver Island have generally been assigned to the Mesozoic ""Coast Range Orogeny."" However, a metallogenic study by the writer has revealed that several important classes are early or middle Tertiary. Included are porphyry coppers, and gold-quartz, arsenic and copper-arsenic veins.The porphyry coppers and many gold-quartz veins are within and adjacent to Oligocene-Eocene quartz diorite intrusive complexes. Arsenic and copper-arsenic veins have a close spatial relationship to sills and laccoliths of Oligocene dacite porphyry which intrude the late Cretaceous Nanaimo Group.Other deposits of demonstrable Tertiary age include a molybdenum stockwork related to a relatively potassic Eocene plug and a few small copper-skarn occurrences. Some copper stockworks and a mercury deposit are probably also Tertiary.The copper deposits of previously recognized Tertiary age are those of the Sooke area that occur in Eocene basalts and Oligocene gabbros."

Cold rolling by 50 pct a A1-4 pct Cu alloy containing many 0' plates has been found to accelerate markedly the transformation of 8' to 0 upon further aging. Although the basic mechanism of this transformation remains unchanged by plastic deformation, the nuclea-tion kinetics of 8 become appreciably more rapid and also less dependent upon temperature. Particularly at lower aging temperatures, rounded idiomorphs replace several faceted rnorphologfes. The rates of growth of 9 idiomorphs in deformed specimens aged at 300°C are appreciably more rapid than simple volume diffusion control allows. This observation is shown to be explained by an excess vacancy, rather than by a dislocation Piping mechanism of growth. ThE rather complex phenomenology of the 8' —8 transformation in Al-Cu alloys has been recently elucidated in considerable detail by means of transmission electron microscopy.'-4 This technique was also employed in the present investigation in order to examine the effects of plastic deformation upon the transformation of 8' to 8. The mechanism of the transformation in undeformed Al-Cu alloys has been established as the following sequence of events.1"4 The first step is the nucleation of 9 at (Y:8' boundaries. Nucleation of a 0 crystal takes place, however, at only a very small proportion of the 8' plates present. Each 0 crystal simultaneously consumes the host 8' plate and the a! in the immediate vicinity, with growth into a being the rate-controlling process. The remaining 8' plates are then dissolved as they fall under the concentration shadow of the growing 8 crystals. The evidence on the effects of plastic deformation upon these processes is intriguing, but much less detailed. The careful X-ray studies of Graf and Guinier have shown that the aging times required to form detectable amounts of 8' and 8 are reduced by prior cold working. Thomas and Nutting confirmed these results by replication electron microscopy. Nile-shwar,* on the other hand, reported that creep deformation decreases the rate of formation of 0. While this difference may have been caused by the use of concurrent rather than successive deformation and ag- ing, the X-ray technique which he used was able to monitor only the 0 phase. It is thus possible that the times needed to form 8' were increased moreg than the kinetics of 8' — 8 transformation were accelerated. At 90 pct deformation by cold rolling, Graf and Guinier found that the usual 0' —0 8 sequence is reversed: 0 forms first. von Heimendahl 10 confirmed this result with transmission electron microscopy. Pollard and Nutting, 11 and more recently Driver and Barrand, 9 having used the same technique, report that 9 also forms first during creep deformation. In the present study, the maximum amount of deformation was limited to 50 pct reduction by cold rolling in order to insure that 8 formed principally by the decomposition of . I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES This investigation was conducted on an Al- 3.93 pct Cu alloy, prepared as previously described. 4 Morphological and crystallographic effects of plastic deformation were studied in specimens annealed 6 hr at 548°C, quenched, and then aged for either 3 or 8 hr at 250°C to form large numbers of 0' plates. Compared to the traditional method of holding coal in railroad cars at the ports for dumping their contents into vessels, it provided for: a. Immediate train turn-around independently of vessel arrivals. b. Winter storage of coal at the port, permitting year round shipment by the mines and year round operation of the railroad.

Radioisotope X-ray and neutron techniques of analysis can be used for the determination of a wide range of elements in minerals. The most important applications of these techniques to the mineral industry are for on-stream analysis of slurries and solids, and for geological assay. The radioisotope X-ray techniques are the more developed ones and two installations for on-stream analysis are in routine use in mineral processing plants in Australia. Neutron techniques are being developed, and should prove valuable for geological assay of large numbers of mineral samples, for borehole logging, and for specific on-stream analysis when the cost of the equipment is warranted.

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is in the process of evolving a computer-based information system which will process all of the material selected for abstracting in the area of chemistry and chemical engineering and its related fields such as the earth sciences and technologies. This system is already operational to some extent and is expected to be fully utilized by 1971. The objective of CAS is to make chemical and related information more readily available, more usable and more used. Chemical Abstracts handle some 5000 abstracts weekly from 13, 000 journals and patents from 25 nations. These cover all of the 80 CA subject sections which relate to chemistry and also extend into areas of interest to geologists, mineralogists, and mining engineers. In this way, CAS fulfills its objective of complete coverage of its major fields, informative abstracting, and indexing to maximum specificity. The concept of a computer-based information system is that of a single machine-language data base into which the results of intellectual analysis of the literature are entered and from which computer programs produce a variety of publications and services applicable to the needs of a wide range of users.

This research, sponsored at Stanford Research Institute by the Grand Junction Operations Office of the U.S, Atomic Energy Commission, was an outgrowth of the concern that presently-known ore reserves may be inadequate to meet the projected demands of nuclear power reactors. The original program at SRI was to design a comprehensive geological information system and use it to store and analyze the very great quantity of data needed to estimate uranium ore reserves. Study of the problem showed that it could be solved only by use of modern electronic data processing techniques, so such a comprehensive system was designed and tested. The system test was satisfactory, but input lead time and total expense were shown to be too great for the system to be practicable for the AEC under present circumstances. Thus, based on results of the earlier research, a specialized and simplified procedure for predicting approximate uranium ore reserves was devised. The prediction is based on general geology of specific area cells of the earth, in order to provide complete volume coverage; the strata in these ores are evaluated for uranium ore favorability on the basis of a few selected criteria in order to allow rapid data input. Since the bulk of U.S. reserves are in clastic host rocks only such strata are considered in this work. This paper describes the structure and some details of the resource system and how it was tested in rn area of the western United States.

Preliminary results of an in situ oil shale retorting experiment conducted by the Bureau of Mines in a shallow bed of Green River oil shale at Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, Wyo., are described. Eleven wells were drilled into a 20-ft-thick section of the shale lying between 68 and 88 It deep, and attempts were made to connect the wells through the shale with a fracture system created by application of high-voltage electricity (electro-linking), hydraulic fracturing, and explosive fracturing. Ignition of the shale through the central well was easily achieved with a propane burner, and shale oil began to collect in three wells within 3 hours. Propane injection was discontinued after 7 days, and combustion continues, although attempts to control the direction of the combustion front have been unsuccessful. Production rates as high as 4 ½ barrels of nil per day have been recorded, but too little is known about underground conditions to permit an estimate of recovery efficiency at this time.

"The Gem molybdenum prospect is situated at the head-waters of Clear creek, between the Fraser river and Harrison lake, about 30 miles north of• Harrison Hot Springs, B.C. Clear creek follows a deeply eroded fault zone southwesterly through the center of the claim group. Elevations range from 2,000 feet in the creek bed up the steep slopes flanking the creek to a height of 5,500 feet. The property lies within an area underlain by schists and gneisses which strike from north to west in a broad fold plunging steeply to the northeast. This metamorphic complex has been invaded by numerous bodies of grano-diorite, much of which is gneissic. A granite plug, roughly 2,400 by 4,000 feet in size, has intruded this broad fold just west of Clear creek and encloses a circular breccia pipe 1,500 feet in diameter. In the breccia pipe, fragments of metamorphic rocks, granite and quartz monzonite porphyry are firmly cemented in a matrix of quartz monzonite porphyry. All the above rocks are cut by numerous fractures filled by vuggy quartz veins, many of which contain molybdenite. Attentien was first drawn to the area by a quartz vein, 18 inches in width, known as the Gem vein, which consists of several laminated bands of quartz and molybdenite. Since 1964, exploration efforts have been directed toward attempting to outline a large, low-grade type of molybdenum deposit."

A model pillar study was conducted in which the engineering principles of dimensional analysis were applied to the problem of coal mine pillar design. The paper reviews the theory of similitude as applied to the model pillar study conducted in the investigation. An example solution of a design problem is included to indicate how the results of the study may be used as a first approximation in the design of coal mine pillars. The design of mine pillars for adequate support with minimum loss of valuable raw materials has always presented a problem to the mining engineer. Most often, for lack of a better method, past practice has influenced the design of new mine pillars. This process has always left doubt as to the safety factor of the pillars. The work presented in this paper is an initial attempt toward adapting the engineering principles of dimensional analysis to the problem of pillar design in underground mines. The use of the dimensional analysis technique is advantageous because all the variables associated with the problem are considered, and by systematic analysis the relative influence of each variable is determined. The model material utilized in this study was taken from the Helena seam of the Cahaba coal field located in central Alabama. The research study was sponsored by The Southern Electric Generating Co. as part of an over-all rock mechanics investigation of the Helena seam area. THEORY OF SIMILITUDE Model analysis is used extensively in engineering today, particularly in the solution of design problems that defy the classical methods of analysis. Such problems arise when materials with a nonlinear stress-strain relationship are involved, when geo- metric boundaries are difficult to define in simple form, when strains become large, or when partial failure occurs. All of these difficulties usually exist in pillar design problems. Those principles which underlie proper design and construction of models, and the interpretation of test results, comprise the theory of similitude. That is, the theory of similitude includes a consideration of the conditions under which the behavior of two separate entities or systems will be similar, and the techniques of accurately predicting behavior of one from observation of the other. The theory of similitude may be developed by dimensional analysis. Dimensional analysis, as a powerful analytical tool, is developed from a consideration of the dimensions in which each of the important quantities involved in a phenomenon is expressed. It is based on two axioms: 1) Absolute numerical equality of quantities may exist only when the quantities are similar qualitatively. 2) The ratio of the magnitudes of two like quantities are dependent on the units used in their measurement, provided that the same units are used for evaluating each. Dimensional analysis, developed from these two axioms, differs from other types of analysis in that it is based solely on the relationships that must exist among the pertinent variables because of their dimensions, rather than on the relationship of natural laws. In itself, dimensional analysis ~rovides qualitative, rather than quantitative relationships, but when it is combined with experimental procedures, it may be made to supply quantitative results and accurate prediction equations. APPLICATION OF THEORY The design of an adequate mine pillar requires the determination of a design equation and the selection of a dimensional system with which to work. Since force plays an important part in the design of mine support, the FLT (force, length, time) system has been used. Very little has been written about the discovery and early history of prospecting of ironstone deposits in the Iron Knob-Middleback Range area of South Australia, the main source of supply of ironstone (hematite) for the Australian steel industry, and scanty though the record is, much of it is wrong or misleading.With the help of several people, to whom acknowledgement is made at the end of the paper, the writer has unravelled some of the story, but not the whole story. It is hoped that publication of this paper will stimulate interest in others, who may be able to supplement this account from family records, from the files of newspapers, or from archives.

reserves are exploring to increase them.. Uranium exploration projects are known to be active or planned also in Guayana, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Uruguay in South America; in the UAR, Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, and Somali in Africa; and in Greece, Iran, Pakistan., Indonesia, and New Zealand. The above list, to which several might be added makes a total of at least 43 nations actively interested in exploration for nuclear raw materials. As we consider the distribution of the world's uranium resources, it is interesting to note that roughly one third of the total occurs in deposits that are economically dependant upon another product. The very large reserves of South Africa could not be produced for uranium alone, but gold has carried a sufficient part of the total cost that uranium can be recovered profitably. Approximately 40 percent of the US reserves, or 120,000 tons, are estimated as by-product recovery from porphyry copper and phosphate operations, but these reserves are not presently in production. The remaining two thirds of the world's uranium reserves have been sought, developed, and produced primarily for their uranium content. Those deposits are estimated to contain 613,000 tons of uranium oxide recoverable at less than $10 per pound. Nearly half of that uranium occurs in unmetamorphosed sandstone hosts, mostly of late Phanerozoic age--the Colorado Plateau type. About 30 percent is contained in the quartz pebble conglomerates of southern Ontario, Canada, and 20 percent is in magmatic-related deposits--veins, contact deposits, mineralized breccias, etc.

A complete rational analysis for design of excavation slopes and loaded rock masses is a desirable but perhaps unattainable goal. Irregular external and internal boundary conditions, poor understanding of failure criteria for large masses of rock, capricious material properties, and the importance of indeterminate forces and inaccessible and virtually un- sampleable rock defects emphasize the importance of experience in this aspect of rock engineering. The experience must be correlated with geological factors. In certain regions the accumulation of such experience through the observation of existing rock slopes in various formations constitutes an important aspect of studies for design of rock excavations.

When a solid-liquid mixture is conveyed through a pipe,' four hydrodynamic conditions may develop depending upon the properties of the transporting medium, the properties of the transported material, the properties of the pipeline and the flow characteristics. They are classified as homogeneous flow, heterogeneous flow, intermediate flow and saltation. Heterogeneous flow, which is the subject of the present analysis, occurs when solid particles are coarse, of high density, and the mean velocity of the flow is relatively low, such that the combination allows the establishment of a pronounced concentration gradient in the cross-section of the pipe. In this type of system the suspended matter does not change the rheological properties of the conveying fluid, and solid and fluid phases behave somewhat separately. In recent years much work has been directed toward gaining more insight into the hydrodynamics of heterogeneous flow (1,2,3,4,5,) However, almost all knowledge obtained is empirical in nature and limited in scope. Much effort has been extended to collect experimental information on the energy losses associated with systems of slurry flow (6-13) The work of Durand and Condolios(14,15) represents one of the most extensive experimentations in this field. Through systematic test runs, the effects of the major flow-parameters were studied one at a time. From the results, they concluded empirically that:

The hydrostatic tensions in pure metals and long freezing range alloys are evaluated theoretically considering the viscous flow of residual liquid and the general plastic collapse of the casting. The former mechanism operates until the radii of the remaining liquid channels are of the order of 10-3 cm radius, after which the second process limits the attainable negative pressures which range from —1500 to -4200 atm for nickel, aluminum, copper, and iron. In previous reports1'2 the maximum possible hydrostatic tensions developed during solidification have been evaluated employing spherical symmetry. This inevitably involves the concept of totally confined liquid regions, the reality of which has recently been brought into serious doubt3 following observations of the freezing of various transparent materials. Regions of interdendritic liquid which are apparently about to be isolated by the growth of dendrite arms are observed not to be cut off because the advance of the dendrite tips is arrested until the region has completely solidified. Although this may be the result of the very low melting point liquid available at this late stage in freezing, or the result of a higher rate of heat transfer to the dendrite tips because of the acceleration in liquid flow rate near the completion of solidification, this point need not concern us. In this paper an attempt is made to approximate more closely to real conditions; thus the assumption of confined liquid regions is abandoned and cylindrical symmetry adopted. It has also been necessary, therefore, to consider the viscous flow of residual liquid through the remaining channels in the pasty zone. Furthermore, the rather special conditions of spherically symmetric solidification led to extremely high solidification rates and hence unusually high tensile stresses as solidification neared completion; the cylindrical Symmetry appears to yield solidification rates and stresses which are more typical of real castings. The rate of solidification is first considered since this critically affects both the flow of the liquid and the creep of the solid.

Although the past results of X-ray experiments indicate that the broad faces of 0' plates are coherent with their matrix, dislocations lying in arrays have frequently been observed at these boundaries by transmission electron microscopy. Critical experiments employing the latter technique have been carried out in order to determine the origin of these dislocations. It is concluded that 8' plates are essentially coherent with the matrix at their broad faces throughout the aging temperature/time envelope studied. Virtually all of the dislocation arrays observed are deduced to have been formed by plastic deformation accompanying transformation. The proportion of dislocations arising from convexity of the plates is shown to be negligible by comparison with that from plastic deformation. At the higher aging temperatures, a[001] dislocations appeared in moderate numbers. These dislocations were traced directly, however, to the ledgewise dissolution of 0' occasioned by the formation nearby of 0 crystals. On the other hand, since there is a parametric difference normal to the broad faces of the ?' plates, mismatch dislocations do form at their edges. A previous conclusion that these dislocations have Burgers vectors of type a[001] was confirmed directly. The edges of 0' plates were observed to develop octagonal shapes when growing, but circular shapes during dissolution. 1 HIS paper presents the results of an investigation of the interfacial structures of plates of the transitional phase, 8', formed in an A1-4 pct Cu alloy. In a companion paper, Part 11, the effects of these structures upon the migration kinetics of a:?f boundaries are reported. This work is pa.rt of a general program designed to establish the basis of precipitate morphology. The present authors in Al-Ag,1 and whitton2 previously in U-C alloys, have used transmission electron microscopy to examine directly the vander Merwe3-6 networks of dislocations anticipated7 to compensate the small amount of lattice misfit normally founda at the broad faces of Widmanstatten plates. Since the broad faces of 0' plates are considered to be perfectly coherent with the corresponding habit planes in the a matrix,' no dislocations should be present at these faces. Many reports have been published, however, giving evidence to the contrary.10-18 The primary objective of this investigation was therefore to ascertain the nature of these dislocation structures. An attempt to do this is described in the first three sections of this paper. Inspection of the matching of the a and 8 ' lattices at the orientations of the 0:0' boundary corresponding to the edges of 0' plates raises the possibility that these edges may be made up of rather closely spaced edge- type misfit dislocations oriented so as to be sessile with respect to the lengthening or shortening of the plates. Since this structure should severely inhibit migration of the plate edges (Ref. 7, Part II), a situation not originally anticipated,' an experimental determination of the interfacial structure of the edges of 8' plates was clearly in order, and is reported in Section III. Those aspects of the experimental procedure applicable to both Parts I and I1 are presented in the next section. Specific procedures applicable to individual aspects of each investigation, and also the relevant surveys of the literature, are then individually reported in the appropriate sections. I) GENERAL EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in both parts of these studies was the same as that of a previous investigation:" strips of A1-3.93 pct Cu, 0.009 in. thick, prepared as before, solution-annealed at 548°C for 6 hr, and quenched. Details of subsequent aging, and in some cases deformation treatments, are given in the Experimental Procedure sections of the individual parts of both papers. Specimens of the heat-treated strips were electro-thinned as beforeLg and examined in a Philips EM 200 microscope equipped with a goniometer stage. A commercial hot stage, of the grid-heater type and capable of * 30-deg tilt about one axis in the plane of the specimen, was also used for kinetic studies. The usual precaution of calibrating for the additional heat supplied by the electron beam was taken.19 A 16-mm cine cam-I era mounted outside the viewing window was frequently used to record the transformations. Conventional selected-area diffraction and dark-field viewing techniques were used to identify the precipitates in the foils. Normal bright-field images corresponding to two-beam diffracting conditions or dark-field images were employed to characterize the dislocations observed at the interfaces of the precipitates. "The copper property of Madeleine Mines Ltd. is in Lapotardiere and Boisbuisson townships, Gaspe North. The initial find was made in 1964, and subsequently a copper deposit of 5.3 million tons of ore was outlined. The property lies in Ordovician sedimentary and volcanic rocks near the major granite intrusive of the McGerrigle Range. The host-rock is a 300-foot-thick metamorphosed silty shale unit, close to the contact of the intrusive. The structure itself coµsists of a southerly-dipping monocline or the south limb of an anticline, on which a large dragfold has been imposed.Chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite are the principal sulphides present in the ore. Of particular interest is the zoning arrangement of these sulphides. The orebody is chimney-like in shape and appears to be a fracture-filling deposit that is genetically related to the granite intrusive and is confined within a highly fractured zone of very brittle rock. The deposit presents features uncommon to any of the other known copper deposits in the Gaspe Peninsula."
