In the present experimental study the geochemical stability of inorganic polymers was studied by immersing them in various solutions (distilled water, seawater and 0.5N HCl) for a period of 7 months. Inorganic polymers were synthesised by mixing ferronickel slag with kaolinite, potassium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution. The cement like paste was heated at 80 °C for 48 hours and left for curing at room temperature. Their structural integrity was assessed by compressive strength testing after subjection to freeze-thaw cycles as well as high temperature heating. XRD studies were carried out in order to identify new formed phases and provide useful information regarding the progress of the mechanisms involved.

The results from the sound level measurements, the dosimeter recordings and the time-activity studies on four different air-rotary rigs indicate a wide variation of operator noise exposure during hole development. These variations appear to be dependent on the cab design and the operator?s drilling behavior. Studies have documented that exposure to high sound levels for long periods of time can cause hearing loss. The results of this study help identify the loudest parts of the drilling cycle. Sound level measurements on the four rigs show that all the rigs generate sound levels that are 90 A-weighted decibels (dB(A)) and above within 6 feet around the rigs during drilling. It is easy to conclude that some type of noise protection, such as a cab, is needed to protect the operator from overexposure to noise for an eight-hour shift of uninterrupted drilling. However, even when rigs are outfitted with cabs, operators observed in this study are being exposed to sound levels above 90 dB(A) during some activities required to complete a drilling cycle. An evaluation and comparison of the four dosimeter recordings and time-activity studies during one drilling cycle may explain why variations in operator exposure occur. Table 1 summarizes the time-weighted average (TWA) and accumulated dose percentages for each of the four operators during the time needed to complete one typical hole cycle.

Several longwall faces in India have collapsed due to adverse geological conditions and/or inadequate capacity of powered supports. Thus it is imperative to access the capacity of a powered support and its interaction at longwall faces of varying geomining conditions in advance with lots of confidence. To achieve this, an index has been developed to ascertain the front leg pressure (FLP) of chock-shield support and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) at longwall faces. The index called ?Longwall Face Stability Index? (LFSI) has been developed using statistics and Finite Element Modelling (FEM). The front leg pressure (FLP) and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) predicted from the LFSI are validated with the field monitored data from two longwall panels. In this study, an attempt is also made to incorporate various geomining conditions into the finite element models typical of longwall mining practice. The index has taken into account the wide variations of geomining parameters like thickness, young?s modulus and friction angle of main roof (small, large), coal type (soft, hard), powered support capacity, and depth of coal seam. Thus, LFSI can be thought of as an index representing combined effect of roof type, geomining conditions and powered support capacity.

By walking the path with refractory materials, from their initial uses in BC times, to the composite materials that are used nowadays, and the nanotechnology developments that are currently taking place in this field, the reader will come to agree that refractory materials are indeed very ?cool?! "The synthetic sorbents and the activated carbons which are used for the metals extraction from weak process liquors are rather expensive. It is propose to use mineral and synthetic high-porous substances which sharply increased sorption properties by special processing. For achievement the desirable properties sorbents are impregnated by specially prepared solutions. Such solutions should contain the substances or its anionic forms which on the one hand are strong enough fixed in a supporter pores, with another are capable to form the insoluble compounds with extracting metals. Selectivity is provided by chemism of the reagent interactions with extracting metal. Due to the high concentration of a reacting ion in a sorbent phase the capacity and rate of sorption increases. Formed insoluble compound remains in a phase of the sorbent and necessity of its filtration disappears. For synthesis the sulfhydryl compounds which chemical properties allow to increase degree of extraction and capacity of the activated carbon were used. At hydrometallurgical processing of precious metals mineral raw materials the commercial solutions with the concentration of gold from 0,1 to 5 mg/dm3 are received. Commonly gold is precipitated from cyanic solutions by the zinc dust. The sorption methods are widely applicable. But the synthetic sorbents and the activated carbon using to these purposes are rather expensive. Expenses for sorbents even at its regeneration can reach 10-15 % from total expenses of gold extraction from ores. When sorbent regeneration, mostly for carbon, is not provided, this share increases to 30-40 %. Thereupon search of the sorbents combining availability, the sufficient capacity, demanded degree of extraction and the low price is actual. For the specified purpose it is offered to use the mineral and synthetic high-porous materials which sorption properties are sharply rose by special treatment. Among such substances are natural zeolites, silica gel, lignine et al. Similar treatment can improve the sorption properties of sorbents used in practice, particularly, the activated carbons. The simplest treatment of potential sorbents consists in its impregnation by specially prepared solutions. Such solutions should contain substances or its anionic forms - impregnating agents. These agents should be on the one hand strong enough fixed in a carrier pores, on the other hand are capable to form with extracting metals insoluble compounds. The more strong compounds are formed the high degree of metals extraction from solutions. The sorbents with similarly changed properties are named the impregnated sorbents."

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Considerable practical knowledge and effective use of empirical evidence is required in the design of tunnel support systems. In many instances, it is unclear how individual support elements interact with fractured rock and which elements of the support system are critical in controlling and containing the movement of material proximate to the excavation. The present paper outlines a displacement discontinuity approach that allows the coupling of surface constraints, in the form of liner or mesh material, to an explicit representation of time-dependent rock discontinuity creep movements. The method is illustrated for a simple square-shaped tunnel profile in which the fracture zone is mobilized by an imposed stress field. A crucial aspect of the model is the computational treatment of the coupling between the liner material and there presentation of the fractured rock mass. This allows the response of the liner material to be assessed quantitatively in terms of the possible reduction of movement in the rock mass. The importance of installing the liner timeously after the excavation is formed is illustrated in a specific example. A number of computational difficulties in simulating liner-rock interaction mechanisms are identified.

This report is intended to help mine safety trainers better prepare to teach the influx of new underground coal miners who are entering the industry. This is done by identifying two different approaches to instruction and discussing the ways they may affect how well prepared new hires are to deal with a dynamic and hazardous workplace. One approach is based on the use of a syllabus. Those using a syllabus are more likely to rely on lecturing or direct instruction. This is a good way to get across factual information, but does not provide a context within which miners can fit the discrete facts so that they form an integrated whole set of concepts, principles, and skills. The other approach is based on the use of a curriculum. Those using a curriculum may be more likely to help miners integrate concepts and skills that give them an overall picture of the complex mining environment and how they fit into the workplace. This will better prepare them for the decision-making and problem-solving activities that will help them work safely and productively

Coal mining by the longwall method typically causes seismic events. This paper describes the research on mining induced seismicity around two specific longwalls at 1100m depth under several old longwalls. A local network featuring 21 geophones has been installed, underground core drilling and an extensive rock testing program were executed. A rock mechanical model featuring a multi-layer strata was created for use with numerical analyses. Seismic events were localized and three different event types are described. Focal analyses yielded distinct modes of failure. Those types are explained by different failure mechanisms, namely fault activation, remnant pillar punching and beam failure. The use of rock mass classification, rock mass strength criteria and in situ stresses together with 2D and 3D numerical analyses allows evaluating the findings from seismology approaches. Conclusions are drawn that the orientation of longwall with respect to the major horizontal stress orientation plays an important role in mine induced seismicity.

"Indonesia is one of the world leaders in palm oil production. Palm oil industry is an industry to be considered when it comes to environmental impacts. This paper utilizes three step approaches. First, a material flow analysis of palm oil related industry was conducted in Indonesia. Second, a factory visit survey was conducted for getting information on environmental impacts of plantation and CPO mills. Third, a LCA study was made for a model Indonesian CPO mill in several bio-waste treatment options. Main findings were that, first; over 70% of FFB was bio-wastes generated from CPO mills. Second, some mills introduced a zero emission bio-waste policy. However, untreated bio-wastes in the zero emission policy, such as, CH4 from POME ponds, may have potential to reduce more impacts on the environment. Introduction Indonesia is one of the world leaders in palm oil production with approximately 12.4 million tons of crude palm oil (CPO) production in 2005 and with the plantation area 5.6 million ha spreading out in 19 provinces [10]. The expansion of palm oil cultivation in Indonesia and its export oriented industry heavily relies on the strong world market demand for food. Currently, there are 320 CPO industries in Indonesia [10]. These include plantations and palm oil related factories. Among them, there are six biggest players in CPO business in Indonesia: PT. Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) consisting of 9 PTPN, Sinar Mas, Raja Garuda Mas, Astra Agro Lestari, Minamas Plantation and Indofood. They are managing more than 50% of plantation estate in Indonesia and are leading the Indonesian palm oil business.Palm oil industry is an industry to be considered when it comes to environmental impacts. Unfortunately, there is not so much available information related to the performance of each CPO on environmental impacts. There are reports which provide information on environmental impacts of CPO mills in South East Asian countries, but are limited to, for instance, Thailand’s cases [4 and 5] and Malaysia’s cases [1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12]. On the other hand, similar studies on the Indonesian’s case are not well established in academic literatures. And also there is limitation on Indonesian palm oil industrial information from plantation to consumption and disposal in academic articles. There is no literature related to material flow analysis focusing on the whole Indonesian palm oil related industry. One way to describe and present the environmental impacts is through a life cycle assessment (LCA). The LCA could be used to estimate the impacts of CPO production including the stages of plantation, transportation and milling [5, 8 and 11]. However, studies on Indonesian CPO production process were not well established in academic articles. The purpose of this paper is thus to clarify environmental impacts of palm oil industry in Indonesia especially by focusing on plantation and CPO mills with consideration to various bio-waste treatments."

The Vanderbijl Park sinter plant in South Africa was investigated to determine the reason for the production of very fine sinter not acceptable as feedstock for the blast furnace. A procedure was designed to generate representative samples and to prepare the samples for chemical and mineralogical analyses. Results from a mineral analyser showed that the samples are extremely heterogeneous and therefore the sampling and sample preparation methods had to be tested in order to produce representative samples. The high production capacity at the sinter plant could also give rise to sampling errors. The method designed involved sampling of the conveyor belt at the sinter plant every four hours for the duration of three days. The samples were then milled and split into smaller sections appropriate for analysis. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses were conducted on the samples. The results showed a standard deviation of less then one per cent, which indicates that the samples were representative and that the method used was therefore adequate. Systematic differences in the phase proportions between normal and fine sinter samples were detected, with the fine sinter containing more haematite than the normal sinter. The sampling method employed gives added confidence that the differences are real.

This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

Three-dimensional velocity tomograms were generated on a daily basis to image mining-induced changes to the overburden above a longwall mine. The hypothesis was that a coherent redistribution of seismic velocity, due to the development of high-stress zones, could be imaged at the mine scale. Seam depth was 360 m and source location depth varied from 100 to 1000 m. Sixteen geophones were distributed over a 600 by 600 m square area on the surface above the mine. More than 12,500 events were recorded over an 18 day period. The recorded seismicity provided input for the local-earthquake tomography code, SIMULPS. Eighteen tomograms were generated and high-velocity regions correlated well with high abutment stresses. Additionally, the high-velocity regions were observed to redistribute as the longwall face retreated. These results indicate that velocity tomography can be used to provide a better understanding of temporal changes within a rock mass, and can potentially be used to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to unanticipated ground failures.

Active EM subsurface imaging is a proprietary technique developed by Marschall Acoustics Instruments Pty Limited (MAI) to image subsurface features at depths useful for the mining industry. Similar in field operations to high resolution seismic surveying, the Active EM technique employs electromagnetic energy rather than elastic wave energy. Received backscattered energy in the Active EM technique is thus due to differences and contrasts in electromagnetic permeability and permittivity in the subsurface, analogous to LamTÆs constants in elastic wave imaging. Carrying the analogy to seismic imaging even further, the Active EM method employs high power transmissions of very wide-band coded signals of a controlled polarisation. Likewise, the array pattern and polarisation of the receiving transducers is also tightly controlled. Thus, in a certain mathematical sense, Active EM is the electromagnetic equivalent of high power high resolution vibroseis seismic surveying. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Nautilus Minerals Incorporated (Nautilus) recently announced the worldÆs first Seafloor Massive Sulfide Mineral Resource at Solwara 1 in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea . The discovery, exploration and resource modelling of this æblack smokerÆ system located 1500 m under the sea involved unique technological development. Whilst the resource estimation methodology had similarities with approaches adopted for analogous volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits, specific parts of the resource estimate called for new ways of assessing data. This paper discusses several innovative methods for collecting and assessing Solwara 1 exploration data. This ia an ABSTRACT only. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

The San JosT district in Patagonia comprises a number of epithermal precious metal quartz veins hosted by a Mesozoic volcanic sequence. New radiometric data indicates that upper Jurassic volcanism was closely followed by vein mineralisation in the lower Cretaceous. A structural model is discussed for the district at times of mineralization that may also apply on a regional scale and other mineralised districts in Patagonia. A mining operation begins with prospecting and exploration-stages with long periods of investment and high risk of failure. However, success in exploration ultimately determines survival of the mining industry. Prospecting and exploration may discover evidence of a mineral occurrence and outline its size and character, but ore deposits that support mining are "made" through the collective efforts of project geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, metallurgists, engineers, chemists, lawyers, and even politicians (Joralemon, 1975). Some deposits may go through multiple cycles of rejection and recommendation, discovery and development, decline and abandonment, rediscovery and development, etc., as economic, technological, or political conditions change or geologic understanding is improved. Peters (1987, p. 233) graphically illustrates the normal life cycle of a mine and the position of exploration in the cycle (Fig. 4.0.1). During the past fifty years, mineral exploration has evolved from comparing evidence of mineralization of prospects with that of known deposits to a more quantitative science employing many facets of geochemistry, geophysics, multispectral sensing from space, computer data storage, analysis, modeling, and most importantly, a better understanding of ore genesis. This modem approach to exploration began in the late 1940s and continues to develop. Exploration efforts peaked in the 1960s with emphasis upon the search for porphyry copper deposits, Mississippi Valley lead-zinc deposits, and volcanogenic massive sulfide copper-lead-zinc deposits. It peaked again in the middle and late 1980s with emphasis upon micron-size disseminated gold and epithermal and stratiform precious metal deposits.

"This paper gives a brief introduction and presents recent enhancements in the MillMapper technology developed for thickness gauging and condition monitoring of liners in grinding mills used for mineral comminution. It also introduces the recent expansion of MillMapper functionality aimed at mill operational optimization. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces at feed, shell, and discharge ends with millimeter accuracy. Data capture takes nominally 5 minutes, hence interruption to mill operation is negligible.The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and discussion of recentlyimplemented innovations such as liner change out forecasting, automatic ball charge volume and weight measurement, and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement for mill operational control or load cell calibration are presented. Combined weight information provides control over load related issues such as load fill levels for relining, or start-up load after reline. Feature descriptions are followed by a listing of the numerous advantages over existing techniques and the benefits to operations. Results from the application of MillMapper are presented throughout.INTRODUCTIONThe need for thickness gauging of liners of grinding mills used for mineral comminution is well known but the task is rarely completed to a satisfactory standard. Liner failure resulting from excessive wear can have expensive consequences. Furthermore, mill performance as well as liner wear are known to be correlated to lifter bar geometry (Napier-Munn et al., 1999; Rajamanni et al., 2005). At present, the following techniques are routinely used to gauge the thickness of mill liners:1. Visual inspection;2. Ultrasonic thickness gauging (for steel liners); and3. Physical inspection (e.g. nail inserted in rubber liners)"

Thermo Fisher Scientific is a supplier of samplers, instruments, analysers and consumables to the mining industry under the Thermo Scientific brand. The critical need to provide a representative sample to the analyser has played a pivotal role in product development. Products discussed are the Analysis and Sampling Station (AnStat) for mineral slurries, the Coal Quality Manager (CQM) and the prototype Bore Hole Analyser (BHX) with optional drill chip recovery system. Analytical techniques used in the above products are XRF, PGNAA and LIBS respectively. The company also designs and supplies conventional mechanical sampling equipment and complete sampling systems for bulk material applications (historical Ramsey brand). These products and application of them are presented.

Investigation on hydrochloric acid leaching of the ilmenite from Panzhihua, China was carried out to prepare synthetic rutile. The leaching parameters were optimized to obtain high content of TiO2 in the products. The experimental data suggest that an optimum leaching can be realized with 30% acid, a solid/liquid ratio of 1/4 at 95°C for 4h, and ore ground for -400 mesh size. After the acid leaching, an additional alkaline leaching process using hot NaOH solution was performed, and then the products was in grain form followed by heat treated at 900°C for 2h in order to extract Si and increase the particle size of synthetic rutile. The final product has a high content of TiO2 (about 95%), a low content of chlorine consuming elements (total CaO+MgO =0.07%) and a suitable particle size distribution for chlorination process.
