Construction of a secondary clarifier on the banks of Rainy River, Northern Minnesota, required the driving of H-piles 14HP102 to a sloping, very strong bedrock through thick deposits of soft and medium stiff soils. Pile toe protection, APF Hardbite HP 77750, was specified to prevent damage to the pile toe and to enable the pile toe to bite into the bedrock surface. The toe protection worked well for bedrock sloping less than 2H:1V. However, where the bedrock was steeper, the piles experienced damage and failed to reach bearing. In most cases, the also the replacement pile failed. Pile Driving Analyzer measurements showed that on encountering the bedrock, the pile toe reflection, which at first was sound, deteriorated indicating pile toe damage. Extraction for visual inspection showed that the failed piles were bent and had deformed pile shoes. In areas of steeply sloping bedrock and for replacement piles, an alternative shoe, the Scanpile Herkules rock shoe, was employed. This pile shoe proved to be able to secure the pile toe into the rock and to eliminate the problem. The costs of the Herkules rock shoe considering price, shipping, and attaching, were about equal with the Hardbite shoe.

"Abstract - The Stewart mining camp has a long history of precious and base metal mining. The camp is abundantly mineralized, with more than 200 widespread, varied, vein prospects, deposits and orebodies. These show wide variations in the mineralogy of ore, gangue and alteration assemblages, and wide variations in textures and structural settings. This report establishes the timing of the different metallogenic epochs and suggests a specific exploration application for systematic lead isotope analyses.Galena lead isotope ratios from a range of mineral occurrences indicate that all these varieddeposits formed during two main mineralizing events. Lead isotope data from the Stewart mining camp do not provide absolute ages for the formation of mineral deposits, but the relative distributions of data are consistent with dates determined in other studies. One ore-forming episode occurred in the Barly Jurassic and the other in the Middle Eocene. Both metallogenic epochs were brief, regional-scale phenomena. Sorne deposits from the younger mineralizing episode were em­ placed adjacent to or superimposed on the older deposits.Field and laboratory studies show that the two metallogenic epochs are characterized by different base and precious metal suites: Barly Jurassic gold-silver-zinc-lead-copper; and Middle Eocene silver-lead-zinc. Therefore, showings of different ages have different base and precious metal potentials and deserve different exploration emphasis. Lead isotope studies provide a reliable, cost-effective method for evaluating the age and commodity potential of small or recently discovered mineral showings and for setting exploration priorities on properties with several varied mineral occurrences . The determination of the age and metal potential of a prospect at an early stage of exploration may govern the urgency, intensity or even the necessity for further exploration work."

Purification of GAsgruvan Limestone is carried out by anionic, cationic and cationic followed by anionic flotations in order to obtain a calcite concentrate that is acceptable to the paper industry. The results indicate that such a concentrate could be achieved by first carrying out the separation of siliceous gangue minerals by cationic flotation followed by the separation of carbonate during the anionic flotation. Stearylamine acetate (Flotigam SA) and a modified fatty acid (OMC 357) are found to be selective during cationic and anionic flotation, respectively. A final product containing 99.25 per cent calcite with a recovery of around 80 per cent is obtained. It is hoped that these results could be further improved by the follow-up process variable studies, in particular, the effect of reagent dosages and conditioning time at each stage of cationic and anionic flotation steps.

Develop a user-friendly computer program that permits those interested in mine health and safety to access and analyze on a personal computer (PC) employment, production, and accident data for U.S. coal and metal-nonmetal mines. This software is being designed with a major focus on flexibility and case of use. The Mine Accident Decision Support System (MADSS) will be available for distribution in mid-1994. Currently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is seeking volunteers willing to pilot test a preliminary version of the software and to provide suggestions for its improvement. Background Since 1975, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has compiled large data bases of information about U.S. mines and the reportable accidents, injuries, and illnesses that have occurred in those mines. Employment and production data arc collected on a quarterly basis from each mine and accident information is collected on an incident -by-incident basis. The USBM has compiled estimated costs for each of these accidents using computer models. All of this information is potentially useful to mine health and safety researchers. However, it has been underutilized because it is stored in large mainframe data bases that arc inaccessible to many users and/or are cumbersome and difficult to use.

"The Western Research Centre (WRC) of CANMET located in Devon, Alberta, is a modern research facility offering services ranging from fundamental research to pilot plant investigations. Recently, a 0. 76 metre diameter by 7.9 metre high Flotaire column flotation cell was installed as a demonstration unit for Canadian coal producers. Because the column cell is intended to be used for research, development and demonstration, WRC recognized that additional sensing equipment and improved process control would be required to generate good data for subsequent column scale-up and engineering design.A low cost, personal computer based control system was, therefore, designed and installed. This paper describes the stepwise procedure in developing the control strategies, selection of system software and hardware, and installation and configuration of the system.Preliminary performance data on a western Canadian coal sample are also presented. Future testwork is planned on additional coal samples to expand upon existing database."

In the past 30 years, there have been tremendous advancements in the uses and applications of column flotation. From their first use as final cleaners that could produce excellent grades at the cost of recoveries, columns are now being used in every stage of the flotation circuit as well as is SX-EW. Columns as roughers, final scavengers and even at the end of CIL circuits, are finding their way into the marketplace. Operational results of these new uses are presented. INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have been in use since the early 1950's in the U.S. (Hollingsworth, 1952) and the early 1960's in Canada (Trembley, Boutin, Wheeler, 1963). Application of column flotation has been somewhat diverse. In the early years, columns were used predominately for molybdenum cleaning in Canada and for phosphate flotation in the United States. Unfortunately, results met with skepticism and disdain as the columns were hard to operate, temperamental and although producing high grades, could not achieve acceptable recoveries. Since the inception of column flotation technology, the degree of knowledge for design and operation of columns has vastly improved. Despite improvements in the technology, there is still some reluctance by mineral producers to investigate the use of column flotation cells for processing stages other than cleaner flotation. This characterization is in part due to the proven advantage of flotation columns in reducing gangue entrainment in the froth product which results in higher grade products and/or fewer processing stages. Also, during the development of column technology, different types of spargers have been used with varying degrees of success. Furthermore, the general knowledge base of parameters affecting column flotation design and operation have advanced tremendously. Inefficient, or primitive, sparger design, coupled with the lack of column design and operating knowledge and experience, resulted in poor metallurgical and mechanical performance in many cases. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge caused many column installations to be characterized as failures. The industry felt that columns could not achieve high recoveries, especially when dealing with coarse particles. Therefore, columns were characterized as cleaners, where low recoveries could be tolerated as recirculating loads rather than direct losses and froth cleaning advantages of the quiescent column flotation regime could be realized. Fortunately for the minerals industry, some producers have stood at the forefront of technology and allowed the column to be utilized for new applications. In the last decade, column flotation applications have expanded to virtually every mineral system and plant location throughout the world. The expanded application of columns has generated a new wave of interest for processing various streams. One of the most notable is in the use of columns as rougher cells. This is of particular interest to "green-field" plants and plants where expansions are taking place. Here, metallurgical superiority can be combined with maximum capital and operating cost advantages for a rapid return on investment. The superior results experienced to date, have generated a cohesive vision of the future in mineral processing where flotation columns function as single stage primary separation devices (roughers) with a single stage cleaner, if necessary. The advantages of column flotation go far beyond their original uses. We now have seen columns used as final tail scavengers, in SX-EW plants and even at the end of CIL circuits. Some of these cases will be reviewed. CASE STUDIES In an attempt to show the diversification of column flotation to many facets of the mineral processing plant, a variety of case studies will be discussed. Some of these were designed by the authors while others have been provided by plant sources. It is important to note that in each successful case, the columns were designed using the author's design and scale-up approach. The use of ammoniacal ammonium carbonate (AAC) leaching for the treatment of carbon steelmaking EAF dust has been investigated on a laboratory scale. The experiments have been conducted on dust samples obtained from three European steelmaking companies. As received, the dusts were found to be toxic when tested according to current EPA toxicity testing procedures. Toxicity was on account of the leachability of one or more of the following elements: Ag, Hg, Pb, and Cd. Leaching experiments with concentrated AAC solution at 40 " C showed that zinc oxide present in the three dust samples, 60-80% of the total contained zinc, was rapidly solubilized. Data on the dissolution characteristics of Cd, Fe, Pb, Mg, and Mn are also presented. Toxicity tests conducted on residues of the leaching experiments found these to have leachates below past and current EPA toxicity threshold limits.

Abandoned underground mine workings have been regularly encountered in open pit mining excavations for many years, for the most part without many serious problems resulting. During the last several years however, some tragic occurrences and near misses have resulted when these old workings were intercepted. This paper will report on the problem as it relates to western open pit mining and will describe several techniques that can be used to identify problem areas before they are reached: Utilization of old maps and engineering data, long hole drilling and probing, and the use of subsurface investigation in the form of ground penetrating radar are the detection methods that will be discussed. The paper will describe some possible actions, once potential problem areas are identified. Drilling and blasting crews are usually exposed to the hazards involved when these situations arise because of their "on the ground" working environment. It is therefore appropriate that some of the best methods of dealing with these hazards once they are identified, seems to involve innovative and creative blast designs. The paper will discuss these approaches and describe an example of this aspect of the solution.

The Orchard Valley Mine, a large underground coal mine located in western Colorado, experienced a major mine fire during an idled Sunday on June 1, 1986. This mine had extensive problems with spontaneous combustion near the coal outcrop. Spontaneous combustion has been determined to be the probable cause of that fire. Preparing for a mine emergency was an on-going task. Once the emergency occurred, much of the preparation work was implemented and aided in controlling the situation. Later, the successes and shortfalls that arose from that emergency were analyzed for future course of action. This paper summarizes the activity that led up to the major fire, the handling of that emergency, the lessons learned, and the changes implemented.

Within the industrial marketplace barium sulfate has an established role as a filler or extender pigment for use in a wide array of applications. The focus of this paper is to outline a number of these applications and in each one characterizes those features of barium sulfate which provide value. Following this is a discussion of the process techniques which have been used to develop value from a selected class of barite ores found in southern Missouri. It is appropriate to define some terms which may help in clarifying some concepts as presented. Use of the term barium sulfate refers broadly to the chemical compound BaSO4 Barite will generally refer to the naturally occurring barium sulfate ores and their properties. Barytes, whether bleached or not, will refer to barite ore made suitable for industrial applications.

The relationship between the process variables and hydrodynamics of a downflow concurrent column (Jameson cell) was investigated in both two and three-phase systems. Gas holdups from 10 to -60 per cent were obtained at gas rates up to 15 cm/s (STP), liquid (slurry) rates up to 25 cm/s, frother concentrations of 5 and 25 ppm, and slurry density (silica) up to 1.23 g/cm3 ina 3.8 cm diameter, 190 cm high column with a 0.5 cm diameter nozzle. Gas holdup decreases with feed rate and increases with gas rate, reaching a maximum (-60 per cent) at a gas rate to feed rate ratio of about one. Gas holdups were higher with slurry compared to water as feed. Stable operation was difficult to maintain at high gas rates especially with low frother dosage; operation was not possible without some frother. Instability was characterised by loss of pool level or formation of slugs. The slugs could move up or down or remain oscillatory. A quantitative relationship between the variables and gas holdup or onset of instability was not identified. Conductivity and pressure-based techniques were successfully tested on-line for estimation of gas holdup and to judge the state of operation (eg formation of slugs).

Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation is a high-capacity flotation technology originally developed in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah for processing mineral resources. However, the technology has been found to be useful in industrial waste processing, in the recycle of secondary resources, and in remediation of environmental problems. For example, areas in which the ASH technology is expected to have potential application include cleaning of waste coal fines, air stripping to remove volatile organics from drinking and process water, water disinfection by ozone or chlorine sparging, dispersed oil removal from water, and contaminated soil remediation. Recently, the ASH has been studied extensively for deinking flotation in the wastepaper recycling industry and has been shown to have excellent efficiency/capacity. In fact, a 20-million-dollar plant has been in operation since June 1992. The ASH technology can provide a specific capacity hundreds of times more than that which can be achieved with conventional flotation equipment and in certain instances is expected to provide superior separation efficiencies when compared to other technologies. The design and principles of ASH flotation are described. Experimental data for fine coal flotation, volatile organics stripping, and deinking flotation for paper recycle are presented and discussed. Finally, other potential areas of application for environmental technology are considered.

Extraction of cobalt from cobalt sulfide and cobaltite flotation concentrate from the Blackbird Mine, Idaho, was investigated using an adapted strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cobalt extractions as high as 100% were realized in the inoculated experiments, whereas only 4% extraction was obtained in the sterile run. The influence of pulp density on the rate and extent of cobalt extraction was also determined. It was found that the extraction of cobalt followed predominantly the indirect mode of bacterial activity. In this process, ferric iron oxidizes cobaltite to cobalt sulfate and ferric arsenate while being reduced to its ferrous state; the bacteria continuously re-oxidize ferrous to ferric iron. Electrochemical measurements using cyclic voltammetry suggested that cobaltite oxidation involved a number of intermediate reactions.

This paper describes a method of evaluating shot performance through the use of available mine- data. The mine had already been monitoring the following parameters for other purposes: drill penetration rates, shovel loading rates, crusher throughput, crusher power and crusher hangups. By assigning pit coordinates to these factors, maps showing the location of difficult and favorable blasting are as are identified. Products and techniques are compared by the same method.

Many of the deeper ore reserves in current gold operations as well as new gold deposits consist of refractory ore types. As process development for these mineralizations remains time-consuming and costly, minimization of exploratory testwork and the early identification of feasible process routes is critical. Since most of the processing parameters are related to the mineralogy of the ore (Marsden & House, 1992), thorough mineralogical analyses during exploration and development phases have become a technical and economical requirement. The determination of mineralogy-related processing parameters and especially the gold mineralogy is even more important for these ore types because refractory gold ores consist of many transitions from partially leachable to totally refractory. In addition to sulfide and gangue encapsulation, various other refractory conditions may exist. Together with accessory mineralogical detriments (e.g., alteration/ slimes, reagent consumers, scale formation, mineral preg robbing) they may complicate process selection and hamper optimal plant operation.

Over the last two years work has been undertaken within the Pasminco Metals - BHAS Zinc Plant to improve the efficiency and maintain the production capacity of the operation. The work has centred upon the installation of suitable process instrumentation to improve process control and the development of new unit operations to maintain control of the circuit water and sulphate balance. A key aspect of the new process instrumentation has been the development of an on-line analyser to monitor the total antimony concentration during zinc dust purification. As a result of changes made to the Zinc Plant in order to contain all effluent within the circuit, a problem developed with control of both the water and sulphate balance of the circuit. A new neutralisation plant to treat all cell house waste water so that it can be contained within the circuit has been developed and installed. In addition changes have been made to the existing circuit to control deliberately the circuit sulphate concentration by precipitation of sodium and potassium jarosite.

CANMET/MRL has been contributing to an industry/government program to assess the quality of air in mines, and improve the working environment for Canadian miners. The ultimate aim of this program is to recommend a sampling methodology and appropriate concentration limits for both the soot (diesel particulate matter - DPM) generated by diesel equipment, and respirable combustible dust (RCD) as measured underground. The program was conceived by the Canadian Adhoc Diesel Committee, which consists of representatives from seven major Canadian mining companies, three provincial inspectorates, one union representative, two manufacturers of diesel equipment, and CANMET, a Federal Canadian research agency. This paper describes the modification and laboratory confirmation of an existing methodology for the sampling and analysis of DPM/RCD, including: sampling problems, filter selection, filter efficiency, DPM size distribution, the approximate performance of fractionating devices, and it reports the results of current ambient measurements of exposure levels in Canadian underground mines. Because of the concern about the health impact of DPM/RCD on mine workers, North American agencies are in the process of establishing limits for these aerosols. So far, the Province of British Columbia is the only jurisdiction in North America to legislate the maximum exposure level of RCD in its underground mines, i.e. 1.5 mg/m3 interim level recommended by the Adhoc Diesel Committee. It has also recommended the use of the CANMET/ADHOC RCD sampling protocol.

The kinetics of the leaching of antimony oxide ore (Sb2O4) in aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions has been investigated. This dissolution reaction is a heterogeneous solid-liquid reaction. It has been found that the leaching temperature and the concentration of hydrochloric acid turn out to be the significant influencing factors on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy for the leaching reaction was determined to be 63.5 W/mol within the experimental temperature region of 50O to 90O C. The experimental results indicate that the leaching process is controlled by the rate of the chemical reaction.

In the time period from the early 1980's to the present, longwall roof support technology has evolved tremendously. Chock supports and caliper shields were replaced by 2-leg or 4-leg lemniscate shields. The lemniscate linkage for which the support is named offers numerous advantages to the sup-port both as a fabricated structure and to its performance in the mining application. The hydraulic system, which is the dynamic element of the roof support, was essentially unchanged in early lemniscate shields with the exception of the complexity of additional hydraulic circuits to power a canopy tilt cylinder and canopy side-seals. The control of these fluid-powered functions was provided by direct manual control of valves energizing individual functions onboard the roof-support or the adjacent roof-support. This control valve-gear was comprised of multiple individual valves arranged in a "bank" or integrated into a single hydraulic distribution block with a single operating handle to select any independent function.
