"Dome Mine's No.8 shaft is located about 1 km northeast of Dome's No.3 shaft and mill complex in South Porcupine, Ontario.No.8 shaft was brought into production in 1984 to hoist ore and waste for the complete mine as well as to service the mine from the 1600 level and below. Access above 1600 level is provided by No. 3 shaft.The rectangular shaft has six compartments consisting of two skips, a cage, counterweight, manway, and a service compartment. The over-all size of the shaft is 14 ft 7 in. by 20 ft by 7 in. (Fig. 1). A 7th compartment for shaft deepening is incorporated in the bottom 500 ft of shaft. The shaft is 5470 ft deep. The loading pocket is located at 5300 ft and the dump 61 ft below the collar.Surface facilities consist of a concrete headframe and a structural steel hoistroom which houses the cage and production hoists . The service hoist is a 12-ft diameter double drum, with one 1750 HP DC motor, and the production hoist is a 15-ft diameter double drum with twin 1750 HP DC motors.Both hoists have a single clutch and a single reduction gear train built by Orenstein & Koppel, and equipped with Canadian General Electric drives. The cage hoist is equipped with a disc pinion brake.The skips were originally aluminum 14-ton capacity, Rolla-chute design with steel liners on three sides and 4 in. of rubber on the back, to absorb the loading impact. The original guide rollers consisted of fixed 10 in. pneumatic tires. The face-to-face units were eventually replaced with larger airplane-type tires mounted on a spring loaded pivot arm."

Contaminated sediments are a multinational problem. A crucial factor in solving an environmental problem is knowledge of, not only the amounts of polluted soil, the contaminants involved and their concentration, but also the historical background of the problem. Processing polluted soil is a tailor made activity based on rational decisions resulting from a detailed treatability study. Lack of information about characteristic properties of a specific sludge/pollution combination is the main obstacle in the route from first ascertaining that a particular harbour subsoil is polluted, to final identification of the full scale treatment plant. In the first instance, information must be generated regarding the distribution of pollutants in relation to the distribution of the original geophysical components. Based on this information rational decisions can be made on separation at a particular cutpoint and what sequential techniques should be involved for a certain fraction. For this purpose a `fingerprint method' is presented especially developed for investigation of polluted soil and sediments. The heart of the fingerprint method is a series of sequential hydrocyclone separations, by which a series of products is generated. The objective of the fingerprint method is to select an optimised treatment procedure in which the pollutants are concentrated in as small a volume of material as possible, leaving the bulk of the material clean. The pollutants can then readily be destroyed or isolated from the environment. The philosophy and advantages of the fingerprint method are demonstrated for a harbour sludge containing heavy metals as main pollutants. Hydrocyclone separation combined with flotation of both the coarse and fine fraction resulted in reusable and dischargeable products. Flotation of the fraction of fines was carried out by means of an experimental flotation cyclone enabling the selective recovery of mineral particles with diameters less than 10 microns. The overall conclusion is that design and engineering of treatment flow schemes for polluted dredged materials is a tailor made activity based on rational decisions resulting from the fingerprint information.

4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder's method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Mount Isa Mines' Hilton Mine was brought into large-scale production in 1990/91 at a time of sharply falling metal prices. To ensure the operation's survival and eventual prosperity there was an urgent need to reduce operating costs and increase revenue. A target of a 40 per cent increase in productivity over five years was set. Strategies to obtain the required improvements were developed on the basis of greater involvement and increased contribution from the workforce, major changes to the mining methods and the development and application of new technology. This paper describes the organisational, operational and technological changes that have been implemented at Hilton and presents the results achieved to-date.

This paper provides a mechanistic representation for floc formation, growth and degradation and presents results from an experimental study of batch flocculation in which step changes were made in the impeller speed, flocculant addition, and slurry concentration. A discussion of the experimental results is included in terms of the mechanisms of floc formation and size-change.

It is obvious from recent events in The Peoples Republic of China that a major effort is underway to increase trade with the Western World. The production of Gold contributes to China's ability to participate in international trade and consequently they place a high priority on increasing gold production. Many of the operating gold mines in China contain refractory ores which to date have not been efficiently treated. Figure 1 illustrates the description and location of some of the major gold mines in China. Recognizing that the technology necessary for the economic treatment of this ore has been developed in the United States and other Western Countries, China has begun to seek assistance in evaluating several potential projects. This paper will examine the recent history and current trends in developing a refractory gold treatment project in China.

This paper describes laboratory testwork for the beneficiation of a medium grade iron ore, using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Factors leading to the selection of machine type for this method of separation are discussed and the design of the WHIMS section flowsheet of an iron ore beneficiation production plant are described including methods to achieve operational flexibility and adequate protection of the WHIMS separating chamber. The results of the commissioning and operation of the production plant over several years are described, together with experience developed in plant operation. Data on recovery of hematite over the full range of size fractions treated is presented and compared with data in the literature. Potential methods of improving plant performance are discussed. The solvent extraction separation of nickel, cobalt and their associated metals have been considered for industrial application since the early 1960's. This review of the solvent extraction processes is limited to the industrial applications, pilot plant and the more extensive bench scale studies reported in the literature. The processes with their significant chemical and technological contributions are discussed in detail whenever the information are available. The application of solvent extraction to the nickel-cobalt processing has so far been limited to the secondary separation of nickel-cobalt containing feedstocks derived from other primary nickel-cobalt separation methods.

"Designs, installation procedures and performance characteristics of martensitic cast steel concaves are reviewed. Longer wear life, fewer pieces to install and eliminating the need to scarf joints are the principal benefits of using martensitic steel to replace austenitic12% Mn (Hadfield's) steel, the traditional concave material for large gyratory crushers. Installation procedures that reduce the risk of breakage are described. Operating practices that affect concave performance are also discussed.IntroductionThe crushing machine considered to be the forerunner of the modem gyratory crusher was patented in 1878 by Charles M. Brown of the Gates Iron Works(1). The earliest gyratory crushers with receiving openings of 6 to 12 inches were fed by hand, and the crushing capacity of a mine was increased simply by installing more small crushers. The introduction of the steam shovel to open pit mining around the tum of the century provided an incentive for much larger primary crushers, and gyratory crushers with a 48 in. receiving opening were being built by 1910, followed not long afterward by machines with 54 in. and 60 in. openings to . Fortunately for the crusher maintenance people of that era, an austenitic 12% Mn steel with exceptional toughness was already available, having been discovered by Robert Abbot Hadfieldoi in 1882. Although small gyratory crushers working soft- to medium-hard rock reportedly used chilled cast iron (white iron) wear parts, these newer and much larger machines were fitted with ""Hadfield's manganese steel"" concaves and mantles to withstand the impact associated with handling large rocks .M E International first challenged the long-standing convention of using 12% Mn steel concaves in large gyratory crushers in the late 1960s when they supplied upper row concaves in martensitic cast steel for a 60-109 primary crusher at a taconite plant on the Iron Range. Since then, martensitic steels have been successfully substituted for 12010 Mn steel in concaves for more than seventy primary gyratory crushers processing iron, copper and precious metals ores, industrial minerals and crushed stone.This paper reviews materials, designs and performance characteristics of martensitic steel concaves in large gyratory crushers. The principal benefits include significantly longer wear life, fewer pieces to install and the elimination of scarfing. Obtaining the full measure of these benefits and minimizing the risk of breakage is strongly dependent on installation procedures, which are described in some detail. Operating practices that can affect performance are also discussed."

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990's. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

"The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered mafic intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendriticpegmatitic mafic pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and magmatic breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to 100/0 within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that affected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd:Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Several factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic interaction with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion.The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Complex, U.S.A.) in terms of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economic concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginaltype POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

A cyclone reactor system for the partial reduction and melting of taconite concentrate fines has been engineered, designed and operated. A non-transferred arc plasma torch was employed as a heat source. Taconite fines, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide were fed axially into the reactor, while the plasma gas was introduced tangentially into the cyclone. The average reactor temperature was maintained at above 1673 K (1400 C), and reduction experiments were performed under various conditions. The influence of the following parameters on the reduction of taconite was investigated: carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide inlet feed ratio, carbon monoxide inlet partial pressure, and average reactor temperature. The interactions of the graphite lining with carbon dioxide and taconite were also studied.

A deep mining operation in the Lower Kelly (Imboden) seam in Wise County, Virginia experienced severe ground control conditions in its attempt to develop reserves situated under increasingly higher cover conditions. Ultimately one of only three mines capable of providing access to a large reserve area had to be abandoned. A thorough geotechnical exploration program was carried out to allow characterization of the critical roof and floor rock strata in accordance with the modified geomechanics classification system. The principal roof and floor rock stratigraphic sequence types were defined and mapped throughout the reserve area along with other critical geological factors. A ground control study based on the geotechnical findings provided a quantitative analysis of the causes of previous entry instability. Further analysis of pillar and entry stability identified configurations which would remain stable for the variety of strata types and range of overburden depths within the remainder of the reserve. Mine designs based on the geotechnical evaluation have, to-date, provided the stability required for long-term future development - of the reserve area. However, some areas of difficult ground were encountered which could not be anticipated with the drill data available at the time of the original study.

The microtunneling test program is one of three main elements of the research project, "Trenchless Construction: Evaluation of Methods and Materials to Install and Rehabilitate Underground Utilities." The other elements of this project include an evaluation and demonstration of horizontal directional drilling technology and pipeline rehabilitation systems. The research is a Corps and Industry cost-shared project funded under the Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) program. The laboratory partner is the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Geotechnical Laboratory. The industry partner is the Louisiana Tech University's Trenchless Technology Center. Industry participants are contributing over half the total cost of this research. The overall objective of the CPAR program is to improve productivity in the U.S. construction industry, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the U.S. industry in domestic and overseas markets. The Corps and other federal and state agencies will benefit by realizing reduced costs, enhanced safety and better products and services as the products of this research program are developed, tested, and pushed into the market place. The microtunneling demonstrations and evaluations were performed during September and October 1992 at a specially constructed test facility built at WES in Vicksburg, MS. The test facility is 104 m (340-ft) long, 5 m (16-ft) wide, and 4 m (13-ft) deep. It was constructed, ironically, by first excavating a trench into which 6 different types of soils were placed and compacted in approximately 18.3 m (60-ft) long sections. The soil profiles include a lean silty clay (loess), a dry sand, highly plastic buckshot clay, wet sand, clay gravel and silt. The interfaces between soil profiles were sloped to simulate mixed face conditions as the machines exit one zone and enter another, and provided challenges to ground control and alignment and grade control during these transitions. Moisture and density tests were performed on all materials in each lift to assure uniformity. Horizontal inclinometers and 3 levels of settlement plates were installed at key locations in the test bed. The settlement plates and rods and the horizontal inclinometers, together with surface survey points, provided data to evaluate settlement and heave along the test section. Penetration resistance was measured in each section of the completed test bed. Strain gages were installed in 8 of the 0.6 m (24 in.) diam. Hobas pipe sections to measure strains in the pipe as it was being jacked into place. Steering jack loads, jacking thrust loads, and cutterhead torque were also measured during the drives. The results of these tests will be used together with other information to develop guidelines for conducting feasibility studies and selecting proper methods compatible with anticipated conditions.

Puerto Rico lies within the remnants of a deformed Cretaceous island arc system in the northeastern Caribbean. The Island can be divided into three broad geologic provinces: the Central Volcanic-Plutonic Province (Lower Cretaceous to middle Eocene), and the Northern and Southern Limestone Provinces (early Oligocene to middle Miocene). Known precious metal deposits are generally small and occur in veins and shear zones within Lower and Upper Cretaceous volcanic and plutonic rocks. Some Tertiary igneous rocks are also mineralized. Selected indications of disseminated lithology-controlled mineralization could represent larger deposits. Associated metals in some deposits include copper, zinc, and lead. At present, tax policies, population density, political outlook, and lack of proven significant precious metal deposits discourage the establishment of a metal mining industry.

In 1990, the aggregate value of world international export trade in mineral commodities was estimated at more than $64 billion in current (1990) dollars, about 8.4% higher than that in 1989, but still 8.7% below the record high set in 1980. Table 8 provides a data series for the estimated value of world export trade in all mineral commodities from 1979 through 1990, as well as a breakdown of this total into fuel and nonfuel commodities. It is noteworthy that for this 1990 edition, trade data for the year of review were available in time for inclusion, whereas in previous editions, the latest available global trade data were for the year prior to the year of review. Hence, as regards trade, this edition of Minerals in the World Economy updates the 1989 edition by 2 years rather than by only 1. For this reason, it is appropriate to note that the 1989 global total value for inter-national export trade in mineral commodities was almost $596 billion, 11.1 % above the revised 1988 level of more than $536 billion, both figures expressed in current dollars for the appropriate year. Despite the considerable increase in the dollar value of mineral commodity exports, their share of total export merchandise trade declined to 19.1 % in 1990 from 19.7% in 1989. At 19.1%, this share was very near the recent year record low of 19.0% reached in 1988. The year 1990 was the fourth in a row in which the total value of world mineral commodity export trade increased.

The three key parameters of mine fires are local airflow velocity, temperature and oxygen concentration. According to the theories of seepage in porous media, heat transfer and heat dispersion, mathematical models were constructed based on the three parameters. The models can be used for early prediction of mine fires and for estimation of the level of spontaneous combustion. Proper use of the models can assist in preventing and controlling mine fires. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 162 natural gas samples from 15 states and 4 foreign countries. Of the total samples, 154 were collected during calendar year 1992. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1992. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free-market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.
