INTRODUCTION There are three fronts on which development efforts are being concentrated to extend the application domain of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), which is potentially very large - Assessment of a reliable prediction method, including machine-rock interaction and geological characterisation, so that the boring system can be designed properly and the costs remain in the predicted range for each given tunnel project. - Development of lighter, more flexible and more controllable machines to be applied in shorter, deeper tunnels or roadways, such as required in mining. - Reduction of cutter and machine costs when excavating hard rocks or difficult grounds, in developing improved tool materials, cutting geometries and tunnelling systems. The above three lines of development have a common, critical requirement: to have a reliable set of design rules to optimize the machine specifications from the knowledge of rock and geological parameters and working requirements. This optimization can only be done if a model sufficiently sophisticated is made available, able to take into account the numerous factors influencing the TBM advance , and being interactive enough to achieve the optimization.

As a nation, we have been known as perhaps the most wasteful in history. From the perspective of engineers and builders on the other hand, planned obsolescence and demolition did beneficially pave way for growth and provided environment for new businesses. Recent economic recession and intense competition from overseas, however, have drastically changed the economics. The high cost of capital and the demise of indiscriminate plant expansion have totally altered the way we conduct our business and run our operations. As a response to increasing demands for better efficiency with little or no funding available, everyone is forced to make do and do better with whatever little he has. Today it nay not be an exaggeration to state that modification of existing facilities may have finally emerged as a way of life. This paper will outline examples of how several companies have effectively modified existing facilities to do more and do it efficiently without having to demolish everything and/or to spend a fortune.

The Bureau of Mines investigated chemical methods for producing high- purity gold from precious-metal-bearing zinc precipitates and steel wool cathodes. Precious-metal-bearing zinc precipitates and steel wool cathodes are unrefined products from conventional cyanidation and heap leaching-cyanidation operations. The zinc precipitates contained 14,40 pct Au and 0.35 pct Ag. The precious-metal-bearing steel wool cathodes contained 20.65 pct Au and 4.84 pct Ag. The precipitates and cathodes were treated with dilute acid to solubilize the silver and/or base metals. The gold-bearing residue was leached in dilute aqua reqia to solubilize the gold. High-purity gold was precipitated from the aqua regia solution with oxalic acid, sulfurous acid, sodium bisulfite, and gaseous sulfur dioxide. The leaching-precipitation experiments recovered 99.9 pct of the gold. The gold precipitates ranged in fineness from 997 to 999 fine. The chemical refining method provides a viable technique for the smaller operator to produce high-purity gold without using pyrometallurgical refining methods.

The effects of hydrogen chloride (HCI) concentration and temperature on the solubility and hydration state of the alkali chlorides LiCI, NaCI, and KCI and the alkaline-earth chlorides, MgCI2, and CaCl2 were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Saturated aqueous solutions of the chlorides were sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increased HCI concentration caused decreased salt solubility be-cause of the common ion effect. Aqueous solubilities for the chlorides of Ca, Li, Mg, K, and Na ranged from 42.6, 45.2, 35.2, 25.5, and 26.1 pct, respectively, at 20° C to 56.9, 49.4, 37.6, 31.0, and 27.0 pct, re-spectively, at 60° C. In solutions sparged to HCI saturation, solubili-ties for these chlorides ranged from 22.4, 26.5, 3.0, 1.3, and 0.05 pct, respectively, at 20° C to 53.2, 48.8, 28.3, 2.6, and 0.8 pct, respec-tively, at 60° C. The solubilities of LiCI and CaCl2 in HCI solution were high because HCI solubility is low in these solutions. The chlo-ride salts of Ca, Li, and Mg formed hydrates, which depended on tempera-ture and HCI concentration. Monohydrates for LiCI, tetrahydrates and hexahydrates for MgCI2, and dihydrates, tetrahydrates, and hexahydrates for CaCl2 were obtained.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated flotation methods for recovering fluorite and byproduct beryllium from the Fish Creek deposit of Nevada. The preferred method includes (l) fluorite rougher and cleaner flotation, (2) de sliming at 20 micrometers, (3) muscovite flotation, (4) silicate flotation, (5) hypochlorite wash of silicate concentrate, and (6) beryllium rougher and cleaner flotation from the silicate concentrate, Laboratory results showed that over 94 pct of. the fluorite was recovered in a concentrate containing 96 pct CaFz. Beryllium flotation produced .concentrates .containing in excess of 5 pct BeO with recoveries over 70 pct. A 1.00-lb/h continuous flotation unit was constructed to demonstrate this procedure,

Kaolin of the Georgia-south Carolina "Clay Belt" are used in a wide variety of filler and extender applications. Sane applications specifically require the performance enhancement delivered by incorporating kaolin into the product formulations. Other applications are less specific in requirements for an inert mineral filler. In order to be a feasible candidate for filling and extending, a mineral or mineral product must be generally inert (except where specific interaction with the filled medium is desired), inexpensive, easily handled and transported in a variety of forms, accessible to a broad segment of the desired market, and must exist in sufficiently large ore reserves as to assure production for many years. Of course, more precise requirements are necessary in specific applications of a prospective filler material.

The performance of the versatile McNally Wedag horizontal vibratory centrifuge for dewatering ultra fine 0.5 x 0.15 mm (28 x 100 mesh) material has proven to be success¬ful and the results presented herein will examine its capabilities in terms of capacity, solids capture, product moisture, effluent solids, and size analysis. Centrifugal dewatering of fine refuse has proven t to be another application for which this unit has performed exceptionally well.

This chapter contains moderately detailed descriptions of some typical and well known mills that treat predominantly sulfide copper ores, some containing secondary values in gold, silver, and molybdenum. The descriptions are general in nature, because most of the specific data will be found in tabulations elsewhere in this section, covering a large number of mills in such matters as flotation reagents, crushing and grinding equipment and steel consumption, thickener and filter operating data, power consumption, and many others, in a manner that the reader will find convenient and comprehensive for reference and comparison. On the other hand, the plant descriptions selected for this chapter emphasize the kind of information that cannot be readily tabulated.

A preliminary model has been developed for autogenous pebble milling using information obtained from studies on ball milling and SAG milling. The model treats the breakage as the weighted sum of first-order breakage of smaller particles by tumbling pebbles, non-first order breakage of larger particles which are too large to be nipped properly by pebbles, autogenouS fracture and chipping of larger lumps to form pebbles, and autogenous fracture and abrasion of pebbles. The model includes the effects of residence time distribution, classification through the exit grate, and a mass transfer relation which describes the accumulation of fine material in the mill. Example simulations are given, based on breakage parameters determined from batch grinding tests in laboratory mills. fracture breakage and abrasion. In the development of these preliminary mass balance equations it will be assumed that breakage by fracture is first-order, but this assumption will be modified later in the paper. It will also be assumed that the residence time distribution of a long autogenous mill can be described by an equivalent series of m fully-mixed mills, with a classification action imposed on the mill contents by the discharge grate. Size distributions are expressed as a v2 geometric series, numbered 1 for the top size down to n for the fines, or "sink" interval. If the holdup in the mill is W then the rate of breakage of material in size interval i is given by SiwiW, where wi is the fraction of material in size interval i, and Si is -the overall specific breakage rate of size i material (fraction per unit time).

Mr R.D. Beck attended Felsted School in Essex (England) and the Royal School of Mines, University of London, where he ob¬tained the degree of B.Sc.(Eng.), A.R.S.M. in mineral technology in 1969. His other qualifications include Pr.Eng. (1976), C.Eng (1975), and M.I.M.M. (1975). He joined Gold Fields of South Africa in December 1969, and worked at Doornfontein Gold Mine, Greenside Colliery, West Driefontein Gold Mine, Zwartkloof Fluorspar, Gold Fields Laboratories, Gold Fields Head Office, Libanon Gold Mine, and Kloof Gold Mine before being appointed Plant Superintendent at East Driefontein Gold Mine in January 1973. In June 1976, he was transferred to Head Office as Group Metallurgist, followed, in November 1978, by his secondment to Black Mountain Mineral Development Company as Plant Superintendent, to take on-site responsibilities for staff training, plant commissioning, and start up. On his return to Head Office in July 1980 as Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, he was responsible for Black Mountain and new metallurgical projects. Then, in January 1984, he was appointed General Manager of the Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited. He became a member of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1973.

Sampling criteria and practical implementation of these criteria are discussed with a view of achieving and maintaining a high level of quality for minerals at their various stages of production through to their utilisation. From this it will be shown the advantages that can be gained by producers who undertake stringent quality control programmes for their ores, thus ensuring they have a competitive edge over other producers.

INTRODUCTION The tax structure of foreign mining investment into the United States has a significant impact on the financing and the profitability of the operation. For these reasons, it is critical for the foreign investor to develop and implement a well planned tax strategy that will enable its venture to: (1) reduce its U.S. income tax liability (2) lower U.S. withholding taxes when funds are transferred from the United States, and (3) decrease or defer home country taxation on its U.S. earnings ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF INVESTMENT A threshold business and tax consideration is the form in which the investment is to be made. The most common alternatives include: forming or acquiring a U.S. mining corporation, directly establishing a branch mining operation, or entering into a joint venture or partnership with a U.S. mining company. U.S. Corporations The most common structure through which foreign mining companies engage in business in the United States is to form a U.S. mining corporation. Forming a U.S. Corporation. If the investor decides to establish a new U.S. corporation the organization is relatively simple. No distinctions are made in the United States between "public" and "private" forms of incorporation. Minimum share capital is not usually required and share capital may consist of shares with no par value. Since corporate law is the responsibility of the individual states, the foreign investor must choose a state in which to incorporate. If appreciated mining property is transferred to a corporation solely in exchange for stock or securities in that corporation, and the transferors have control of the corporation (defined as at least 80 percent of all voting shares and at least 80 percent of all other shares) immediately after the exchange, no gain or loss will be recognized. However, if the transferors receive cash or other mining properties in addition to stock, any resulting gain may, in certain situations, be taxed to the extent of the cash and the fair market value of other property received. Acquiring an Existing U.S. Corporation. Acquiring an existing U.S. mining corporation is not as straight-forward as forming a corporation. This alternative may be accomplished through either a stock or an asset acquisition. Generally, with a stock acquisition the purchaser inherits all of the business and tax attributes of the former mining corporation. If the investor is able to acquire mining assets, however, the purchaser will usually be able to avoid any unknown or hidden liabilities that could be attached to an existing corporation. Another principal advantage in acquiring assets is that the purchase price may be directly allocated to the acquired mines or other mineral-related assets with the result that the assets' depreciable base may be increased. Assuming the domestic seller and the foreign purchaser can agree, it is generally advisable to allocate the purchase price in the sales agreement to specific individual assets. From the foreign investor's standpoint, it is preferable to allocate the purchase price to depreciable assets such as buildings and equipment versus an allocation to mineral land holdings or intangibles such as goodwill, which are generally not depreciable. It is not uncommon, however, for a seller mining company being acquired to insist for tax reasons that the investor purchase shares rather than assets. If the foreign

The scope of work included excavation, rockbolt/shotcrete/wire mesh primary support and cast-in-place concrete lining of the (1) 216 m, top flared shaft, connecting 1.57 radian elbow, and 590 m tunnel to a 10.67 m finished diameter; (2) complex double bifurcation section; (3) excavation, support, installation and backfill concrete for three parallel, 135 m steel penstocks of 5.79 m finished diameter; (4) construction of a 43 m diameter reinforced concrete intake/discharge structure atop the shaft.

Within this context limestone has truely become an "urban ore". Its uses extend from traditional aggregate markets to lawn and garden, archetectual, chemical, agricultural, industrial, and environmental applications. This paper looks at both the occurance and uses of limestone in the northeast, and briefly examines changing patterns in consumptive use.

It is the intent of this paper to discuss the autogenous grinding circuit at Hibbing Taconite. The scope of the presentation includes; a brief history, the process flowsheet and the steps taken to improve mill productivity, availability and metallurgical performance. Hibbing Taconite is located near the center of the Mesabi Range in Northern Minnesota 100 miles from the Canadian border and 80 miles north of the Lake Superior Port Cities of Duluth and Superior. A 105 mile railroad connects us with the port of Superior, Wisconsin, where our pellets are loaded into lake carriers for lower lake destinations. It is worthy to mention the Mesabi Range's most famous landmark which is immediately to the south of our mine area. This is the Hull Rust Mahoning Mine which operated until the mid-1970's producing more than 700 million tons of red ore between 1893 and 1973.

"Manufacturing of Jaw CrushersOriginIn 1858 Eli Whitney Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock breaker-the Blake-type jaw crusher. Blake adapted a mechanical principal, the powerful toggle linkage system used to transform rotating motion and energy into oscillating mot ion and tremendous compressive forces. Today these same principals apply and the basic Blake-type jaw crusher is one of the leading machines of its class for heavy duty primary crushing service.In 1881 Philetus W. Gates patented a design for a crusher, the forerunner of the modern gyratory crusher which dominated the field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1910 the largest gyratory crushers built had 48-inch openings. However, about this time the jaw crusher came to life when the Power and Mining Machinery Co. built an even larger sized opening crusher-a giant 84-inch by 60-inch jaw crusher for a trap rock quarry in Pennsylvania. A 24-inch gyratory crusher became the ideal sized secondary machine for this size jaw. From that time on jaw crushers were looked on favourably as primary breakers and lines were brought up to date to parallel the already developed gyratory lines.FunctionMost heavy duty Blake-type jaw crushers work basically the same way. They are ruggedly designed and capable of crushing material in some cases in excess of 80, 000 p.s.i. compressive strength. They are very simple machines with few moving part s and, with the exception of replacement of renewable parts, are relatively maintenance free. It is quite common to have these machines in product ion for 20 to 30 years. The following will de scribe how these machines work. Large-diameter high-inertia flywheels which are connected to the main eccentric shaft, rotate inside a connecting rod type mechanism called a Pitman. It transforms rotating motion into vertical oscillating motion. This vertical motion is in turn transformed into reciprocating mot ion by means of a system of 2 toggles, each connected to the Pitman. The rear toggle is connected to the fixed rear head, and the front toggle is connected to the swing jaw which is hinged at the top of the crusher. With each rotation of the eccentric shaft the swing jaw opens and closes on rock which is fed into the crusher chamber, crushing the rock in a series of bites. These bites, or strokes as the y are called, usually vary between 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch at speeds of 120 to 200 strokes per minute. The reduction ratio of feed input to discharge is usually about 8 to I. Output capacities can vary from 100 tons/hour to 1200 tons/hour depending on the size of machine and its discharge opening. Horsepower requirements can vary from 75 hp to 400 hp.The entire crusher chamber is lined with replaceable 14070 manganese steel liner plates. This material is ideally suited for the job since it hardens as it wears during crusher operation. Manganese is also used in the high wear areas at each end of the toggle plates."

This report describes the design, development and manufacture of a prototype quiet hard rock stoper drill and results of its field tests. It is shown that the stoper drill noise level can be reduced from 118 dBA to below 100 dBA by using this design. The design concept of this drill is based on a valveless independent rotation system, use of an integral muffler and pivot mount. The drill was manufactured in a standard commercial drill manufacturing setup and organization. The design and production technology proved that commercially viable quiet drills can be made available for mine use.

Introduction In June 1981, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the US coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent." With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. Major Features and Benefits of Nuclear Measurement and Analysis Systems There are many features and benefits of nuclear instrumentation. The major benefit is that nuclear instrumentation is non-contacting. The measuring heads do not contact the process materials. This enables measurements of corrosive, abrasive, or high temperature materials with no loss of performance, reliability, or useful life. Also, there are no moving parts to wear or be fouled by dust or corrosion. Installation is simple and inexpensive. For instance, density gauges are simply clamped onto existing pipe runs. Weigh scales and level switches usually require nothing more than welding brackets to customers' equipment. Once installed, routine maintenance can be performed without interrupting the process. Thus, nuclear instrumentation is highly reliable and easily installed and maintained. The operating life of the instrumentation is virtually unlimited. Principle of Operation Nuclear belt weigh scales, point level switches and density gauges all operate on the gamma-ray transmission principle. A beam of gamma radiation from a radioisotopic source is projected through the process material either on a belt, in a vessel, or in a pipe. Opposite the source is a radiation detector whose electrical output is proportional to the intensity of the radiation it absorbs. Gamma radiation is part of the same electromagnetic spectrum that encompasses light, infrared, and x-rays. In many respects, gamma radiation behaves much like light. However, it is far more penetrating and can be transmitted through considerable thickness of materials that are opaque to visible light, e.g., several inches of steel. Types of Nuclear Instrumentation in Coal Preparation Plants There are four types of nuclear instrumentation presently being employed in coal preparation plants. They are: •Belt Weigh Scales •Point Level Switches •Density Gauges •Coal Analysis Equipment. Each type of instrumentation has a number of potential applications within the plant. What follows is a discussion of three different types of devices and their applications. Weigh Scales In coal preparation plants, weighing instruments are used for measuring material throughput, totalized weight, and batch weight on conveyor belts and other transport equipment. They are also used on drag chain conveyors, vibrating conveyors, and screw conveyors. Weighing is important for receiving the run-of-mine coal, controlling mass flow, scheduling production, and loading and shipping the washed coal to market. There are two basic types of weighing instruments: gravimetric and nongravimetric devices. Gravimetric devices are units which measure the pull of gravity on the material being weighed. Nongravimetric devices are not dependent on the force of gravity on the sample. Nuclear weigh scales are the most prevalent nongravimetric devices used. The nuclear weigh scale works on the same basic principle as other nuclear gauges. The greater the quantity of material placed in the path of a radiation beam, the more radiation will be absorbed by the material. In weigh scales, Cesium 137 source is generally placed above the moving stream of material so that the radiation is directed through the material. An ion chamber radiation detector is on the opposite side of the material. The radiation passing to the detector generates a signal which is inversely proportional to the weight of the material present. This signal is amplified and integrated with the speed of the process flow yielding the weight. The weight is indicated and can be totalized for throughput, batch control, etc. In conclusion, radiation weighing methods have become well established in the coal preparation industry throughout the world. INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use.
