Gold with minor associated copper mineralization in the area of what is now the Bougainville porphyry copper deposit has been known since the 1920s and was probably known in German colonial times, pre- 19 14, although no records persist other than a reference by Stanley (1922) to copper specimens from Kieta that he saw in Rabaul. Stanley did not at the time believe that they came from Kieta. Gold was first discovered at Kupei by Jack Comb in 1929 and the Kieta Goldfield was proclaimed in May 1930. In December 1932, the Tapu Reward Claim at Moroni - the site of the Bougainville Copper concentrator, was pegged by C.W.M. Evans who prospected up river from the West Coast. The Pumkuna (Panguna) Reward Claim on the site of the subsequent porphyry copper deposit was granted in February 1934 to G.A. Myers. n May 193 1, the Kupei Reward Claim was transferred to Bou- gainville Gold Options NL and later reverted to Jack Comb and then the Bougainville Syndicate, as did the Pumkuna and Moroni claims. Most of the interested parties had come from the Edie Creek rush on the New Guinea mainland. In 1935, N.H. Fisher, the geologist in Rabaul for the New Guinea administration who later became director of the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra, reported on the three gold areas. Norm Fisher described the gold and copper mineralization and its habit in great detail and this report had a major influence on the events leading to the discovery in the 1960s. Gold production up to the Japanese invasion probably did not exceed $50,000 in value. Half a ton of copper-gold ore from Kupei was sent to O.T. Lempriere's in Sydney for assay in the early 1930s.

Environmental regulations have become a decisive factor for many minerals industry operations. Managers face new liabilities as a result of environmental laws, and restrictive permitting requirements for new projects make mine development an increasingly difficult proposition. An abundance of federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations already confront on-going minerals operations, and complex new legislation and rule-making is always in progress. Acronyms and initials like RCRA, CERCLA, SARA and EIS become as familiar as reserves, tons, grades and recoveries. The growth of such regulation has created a new category of professional employees - environmental scientists and engineers-whose presence will influence minerals production activity from now on. The disciplines of environmental science and engineering are still being defined. While these definitions are being worked out, companies in the minerals industry have responded by hiring people with professional experience in existing disciplines and training them to their special needs. An environmental consulting industry of substantial proportions has developed to offer expertise where producing companies may not find it economic to hire full-time professionals. The mining schools have responded by introducing environmental course work, but these programs have yet to supply a significant number of environmental professionals to the minerals industry. To gain some perspective on where minerals producers now stand in their hiring of environmental professionals, ME recently surveyed 20 companies, with questions about how they go about the business of managing environmental compliance. Pitch-steering models have been developed for discretely advanced mining machines (such as heading machines and coal shearers) using small-angle geometry and there are illustrative examples of simulator predicted performance. Although simple linear models result from the analysis of open-based machines, sledge mounted machines require execution of a Linear Programming energy minimisation to determine the attitude of the machine base at each advance over the previously cut floor steps. An analytical approach is based on elastic beam concepts developed for such applications as longwall face conveyors, caterpillar tracked machines such as continuous miners and longhole drills. Simulation results for longhole drills show the expected performance of an automatic guidance system and the destabilizing effects of sensing deviation too far behind the drill bit. Certain drill bit boundary conditions are expected to assist TBM. steering studies in three dimensions.There is a real role in mining machine steering for the mathematical models used in flight simulators.

In order to keep good air condition in any specific branch such as coal face and/or heading in an underground coal mine, effective factors of all the branches with respect to the specified branch have been investigated, using computer simulation. Main results of the paper are as follows; 1) A branch in a network is classified to one of three classes of effectiveness to increase, to decrease and not to change airflow rate in the specific branch by altering aerodynamic resistance in the branch. 2) Distribution of position of branches, belonging to each class, related to a specific branch is one of the macroscopic characteristic of a network which is the inherent property of every network. 3) A relation of the aerodynamic resistances of any two branches to keep a constant airflow rate in the specified branch is shown as a monotonous curve. 4) Ventilation transition diagram with the rate of airflow in the two branches as coordinates, and for different rates of airflow in the specific branch as the parameter, is found to be straight lines. 5) Existing range of airflow rates In the specified branch is given as a parameter in the enclosed area in the ventilation transition diagram. Moreover, an expert system to assist ventilation control using a transition diagram of airflow rate is introduced in this paper.

A discussion of the practicalities of carrying out a material balance using simple nodal sensitivity analysis is given. The calculation of the errors involved is reviewed and the concept of co-variance examined through computer simulation. The use of co-variances in such calculations is shown to be practically insignificant. The method proves to be rapid and relatively accurate provided the circuit topology is correct.

The effect of leaching three samples of Mt Weld ore with a-hydroxysulphonic acid [(CH3)2(COH)SO3H] was assessed. Apatite present in the samples was found to be readily soluble but calcination up to 600¦C was required to increase the solubility of crandallite. Increasing the calcination temperature increased dissolution of both phosphate and alumuuum. The optimum SO2 content in solution for the dissolution of crandallite ores was found to be lower than for apatite.

The results of laboratory grindability tests on coal are of primary importance to the designers and operators of coal grinding mills, and coal handling plants in general. However, the potential industrial application of these test results have not been fully realised due to a lack of laboratory-test/field data correlations. This paper focuses on the grindability characteristics of Queensland coals, and provides a new look at an old problem in terms of (i) a more rigorous characterisation of the grindability properties of coal and its associated mineral impurities, and (ii) the correlation of laboratory grindability test results with the size characteristics of run-of-plant thermal coals, and their pulverising characteristics in full-scale mills. A new grindability test is also proposed based on the Yancey, Geer and Price laboratory abrasion-test mill.

This paper will discuss the complex and difficult soil conditions encountered in the sinking of 15 shafts of 18m to 27m depth and the excavation and lining of 6700m of 2.74m dia. interceptor sewer on Staten Island, New York. The complex soil profile consists of dense glacial till and sand outwash strata overlying the much older cretaceous sand, silt and clay strata. The tunnel varies from 8m to 14m below the nearby sea level. A significant amount of boulders were anticipated in the till. therefore, a decision was made to excavate the tunnel with a digger shield installing bolted, gasketed concrete segments. The bid documents stated the soils were dewaterable. Several conditions occured in this complex soils matrix which required modifying the planned means and methods including the necessity to use compressed air. The conditions encountered and the equipment used will be described.

During the last decade, diesel engine manufacturers focused their research efforts on higher efficiencies and horsepower-to-weight ratios. The result was horsepower increases of between 20% and 30%. At the same time, coolant volume decreased by about the same amount. This has made coolant maintenance more important to ensure a long life for the engine and its cooling system. Due to dilution and additive depletion, supplemental conditioners are usually added to the coolant system during an oil change. Dilution occurs when coolant leaks from the system, and water or non-conditioned antifreeze is added. Depletion is a more complicated process that involves oxidation, neutralization, precipitation and metal surface reactions.

In 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the Mallard study area near Elk City, Idaho. The study area comprises most of the original Mallard RARE II area (1-847) plus some additional lands. The investigation is part of an ongoing, multi-year study of north-central Idaho that is being conducted in cooperation with the Idaho Geological Survey and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The only identified resources are rock suitable for road metal. Five lode prospects and a pyrite-bearing rock quarry, which is operated by the Forest Service for aggregate, were examined for metals. One of the prospects warrants additional exploration for silver in quartz veins, but the chance of finding an economically minable deposit is limited. Several rock and stream sediment samples were anomalous in various metals. Two of the more promising localities for gold and/or other metals are adjacent to a unit of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness that the USGS classified as having a moderate potential for gold deposits related to fossil hot springs.

Management at all levels continually strive to optimise, or make the most of resources available to them. Daily, decisions are being made on how to most efficiently locate and exploit an ore body, then process and market the recovered metal. At one level this optimisation process in the Australian mining industry appears to be successful, for example, witness the improvement in productivity and reduction in operating costs through the 1980s. Yet, at another level the industry's performance has been appreciably below expectations as measured by rate of return criteria. Companies likely to exhibit superior performance are those that are able to co-ordinate, through good planning, the optimisation process at all levels of the organisation. An important role for general management is therefore to provide the context or boundary conditions in which optimisation can Proceed.

The recovery of nickel and cobalt from electromachining sludges in the form of relatively high-purity marketable products has been investigated. The investigation has shown that a series of metallurgical unit operations can be performed to recover nickel and cobalt from electromachining sludges in the form of al kal i nickel ic hydroxide and cobalt sulfate/cobal t metal, respectively. The recovery unit operations for nickel include high pH cyanide complexation, followed by oxidation and precipitation of alkali nickel hydroxide. The resultant filtrate can be treated for cobalt recovery by neutralization and acid baking to produce cobalt sulfate. The cobalt sulfate can then be treated for cobalt recovery by electrowinning. Results from laboratory bench scale test work are discussed in terms of appropriate operating conditions.

Specialised, high productivity equipment has been manufactured in Australia, in sufficient volume, to satisfy the local mullet needs.Local manufacturers face greater challenges from overseas competition, as well as increased customer demands to improve machine performance, productivity, quality, reliability and safety. In order to meet these demands now and in the future, it will be necessary to review work practises, and restructure production and quality systems to incorporate the latest principles and philosophies.

"Income tax legislation is not keeping pace with federal and provincial environmental legislation. There is a vast array of new environmental regulations at various stages of implementation across the country. Unfortunately, there are serious concerns about the deductibility of significant payments which mining companies will be required to make under these new rules, and the Department of Finance seems to be reluctant to act on these concerns. IntroductionWhile the federal and provincial governments are racing ahead with obvious fervour to introduce new envirorunental laws, the tax rules relating to envirorunental costs are being allowed to lag far behind. In a nutshell, the tax treatment of envirorunental costs is not keeping pace with the new envirorunental legislation.One of the most serious concerns of the mining industry is the deductibility of mine reclamation or closing costs. The producing provinces are well advanced down the road toward mandating upfront deposits, bonds, or similar financial guarantees to protect the envirorunent from the operation and eventual closure of a mine. These requirements are not small. In some instances, they can amount to tens of millions of dollars. And, if there is no tax deduction for these sums when they are set aside by the mining company, then the costs have to be paid out of the company's after-tax earnings."

In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth). Reflected light microscopic examination of particles from laboratory experimental copper flash furnaces operated under varied furnace conditions shows that the particles exhibit a wide range in mineral compositions and mineral abundances that correlate with partial pressure of oxygen and concentrate/oxygen ratio. Chalcopyrite, bornite, and digenite are more abundant under low oxygen conditions. With increasing oxygen, metallic copper, delafossite and cuprite become increasingly abundant. The extent of particle agglomeration during flight varies with the furnace. Those products from the larger furnaces exhibit the greater degree of agglomeration. Significant particle fragmentation also is evidenced by cracking and brecciation of some particles.

When the automatic control of a ventilation process is considered, and supervising expert systems need to be designed, an important problem to address is: what will be the optimal set points of the regulators that should meet a certain number of independently formulated requirements, distributed over a ventilation network? The set of these requirements, expressed in terms of air flow quantities or differential pressures in certain airways, need not be consistent. Their number is not limited by the number of available regulators, nor by their nature, i.e. passive or active. Moreover, they may be subject to upper or lower limit values. The method described here addresses this problem and tries to provide a tool that should allow to calculate the set points of all the regulators as a global and optimal solution with respect to this set of distributed requirements. The pure mathematical developments in this paper are kept as short as possible in order to allow more room for the description of a relevant example.

In 1962, while investigating the tungsten potential in the Thompson Creek area for Union Carbide Corp., Henry T. Eyrich obtained anomalous concentrations of molybdenum (up to 19 ppm Mo) from stream sediment samples collected along Pat Hughes Creek, a tributary to Thompson Creek. Follow-up investigations by Eyrich during the same year disclosed the presence of a hydrothermally altered and molybdenite-bearing granitic exposure in the headwaters of Pat Hughes Creek about 2.4 km (1.5 miles) upstream from the sample point. The altered outcrop measured about 549 by 305 m (1800 by 1000 ft), contained abundant northwest-trending quartz veins locally with molybdenite, and was overlain and surrounded by the Challis volcanic extrusive sequence of mid-Tertiary age. Eyrich's subsequent soil and rock chip geochemical sampling program over the altered outcrop area showed a general increase in the molybdenum content to the northwest toward the postmineral Challis volcanic cover. Over a distance of about 305 m (1000 ft), values in the altered intrusive rock increased from less than 5 ppm Mo to over 600 ppm Mo, with aconcomitant intensity of the hydrothermal alteration pattern. Based on these geochemical results and on preliminar; megascopic hydrothermal alteration studies, Eyrich correctly concluded that the altered outcrop is an erosional window and that molybdenum mineralization of sufficient grade could exist beneath the Challis volcanic cover some distance further to the northwest. His recommendation to test the area of potential molybdenum mineralization with several drill holes was, however, declined by Union Carbide in 1962. The property remained unclaimed until 1967, when Eyrich joined Cyprus Mines Corp. Acting on Eyrich's recommendation, Cyprus immediately staked 26 lode mining claims to cover not only the altered intrusive outcrop, but also the northwest trend of mineralization where it projected beneath Challis volcanic rocks. Eleven of these claims are now patented.

Following considerable laboratory studies concerning particulate control systems for underground use, a program was commenced to develop practical real life implementation systems. This program covers the implementation in seven mines of particulate filter systems to 10 engine models from three engine manufacturers in 12 different vehicle types, a total of 24 vehicles. As the program ran, one mine had to drop out and a mutually agreed upon system could not be arrived at for another. Hence, the program included five Canadian mining companies. Several of the vehicles trialed at Brunswick Mining were trialed by Brunswick themselves. Nonetheless, the data is presented. This paper covers the work performed from the beginning to the end of the demonstration program. Data collected to properly select and design filter systems along with technical conclusions of the demonstration are presented. Also presented are the results of a survey that highlights the participating mines' acceptance of the technology.

The mechanical mining of coal seams where roof, partings, and floor rock are extracted along with the coal often introduces large numbers of quartz particles into the mine atmosphere. This study concentrates on the quartz properties in situ and in the airborne dust to determine how they are released from the source rock and whether they are fractured by the mining machinery. Three mines using drum-type continuous miners from different geographic areas were sampled to provide a data base. The roof and floor rocks were primarily siltstones containing 5% to 25% quartz measured by the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) method. Much of the work presented here is based on the morphologies of the mineral grains determined by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The study concentrated on particles of 0.2 to 10.0 µm and on particles containing > 75% Si. Mechanically-crushed quartz particles were also examined for comparison purposes. Particle shapes from the airborne samples suggested that fractured quartz particles were rare. Particle statistics also show that the average size of quartz particles in the airborne samples were similar to the average size of all particles. The conclusion is that very few quartz particles from the source rocks are fractured during mining due to their small initial size and the protection of the associated clays.
