For the past ten years Paques has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems based on biotechnological processes to remove sulfur compounds from water, air and gaseous streams. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters using two biological steps: 1. Sulfate reducing bacteria convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The H2S reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. 2. Sulfide oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur. Paques has designed and installed a groundwater treatment system for the Budelco zinc refinery in the Netherlands to remove metals and sulfate as described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 treating a flow of 5000 m /d. A pilot plant started operation in November 1995 at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Utah copper mine to develop the processes for metal and sulfate removal from groundwater and selective copper recovery from leach water. The principle of the biotechnological methods, full scale experience, and an overview of the test program at the copper mine are presented.

"Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) based positioning and navigation systems have been recently developed and implemented by AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. on blast hole drills and electric cable shovels in Canadian open pit coal and iron ore mines. These systems enable the location of the drill bit or the shovel tracks to be accurately determined in three dimensions. The position of the drill or shovel is displayed to the operator via a real-time, Moving Map Display (MMD) on an LCD-VGA screen. The MMD allows the operator to accurately navigate the drill from blast hole to blast hole or maintain a desired shovel grade or face position, with respect to displayed bench features. The maps for the MMD are downloaded from the mine office via laptop or radio link as required or as mining plans change.To obtain reliable, accurate and real-time3D positions of mobile mining equipment, proven GPS technology has to be utilized. The GPS components need to operate reliably under the severe environmental conditions that exist on board mobile mining equipment. In addition, they have to contend with varying pit geometry’s and satellite configurations, with little or no performance degradation. These issues were initially examined in December1993 during a feasibility project between AQUILA and Gregg River Resources Ltd., in relation to implementing GPS systems on blast-hole drills.To achieve certain design objectives, AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. has developed navigation systems for cable shovels and blast-hole drills based around off-the-shelf, high precision GPS components. These systems utilize the AQUILA Advanced Monitoring Platform (AMP), to display graphically, via the MMD, shovel grade and drill position to the operator to within ±12 inches of design coordinates. Production prototypes have been installed on a Marion 301 cable shovel and a Bucyrus-Erie49-R Series III drill at the Fording River Mine in August, 1995, at the Wabush Mine on a Bucyrus Erie 190-B shovel in June, 1995, and on a GD120 drill at Gregg River Resources Ltd. in January, 1996. All these systems have undergone field trials to test system components and functionality’s under actual production conditions. This paper will discuss these GPS-based positioning and navigation systems in subsequent sections."

One of the major concerns of ground control in a coal mine is safety against failure of one of three components (i.e. roof, pillar, or floor) of the mine entry. In order to better design and evaluate stability of the mine entry with a certain confidence, a reliability approach is introduced rather than using the conventional safety factor (SF) method only. Advantages of using the reliability approach is that it not only takes variability of both rock/coal properties and stress distribution into consideration, but also assesses the stability of each component and mine entry as a whole system. Therefore, it is anticipated that, by using this approach, the current ground control technology in coal mine will convey a better sense of confidence. The results of a case example show a significant influence on the current design concept and stability evaluation of mine entry.

Introduction It is generally accepted as dogma that sampling contributes most of the error in gold fire assays. Differences in assay results on pulps from the same sample interval are frequently regarded as evidence of the presence of the so called "nugget effect" of relatively coarse gold particles. It is true that coarse gold particles can contribute to substantial sampling fluctuations. But, while the process of sampling is probably the major source of error, the analytical process cannot be completely ignored as a possible contributor to erratic assay results. To maintain a stable assay process, the analytic part of the system must also be kept in control. One method of monitoring the performance of the analytic system is to systematically assay standard materials, whose sampling characteristics are carefully controlled. Gold assay standards are not prepared, nor can they be prepared, to account for both sampling and analytical errors. It is not possible to send coarse material to a lab for both preparation (i.e., comminution and splitting) and fire assaying and then come to conclusions only about the fire-assay process. Because most gold ores are very heterogeneous, sampling errors would, in most cases, completely mask the contribution of the analytical errors. Assay-standard material is prepared only to assess the accuracy and variability in the fire assay process. Because the objective of the assay standard is to provide information about the fire assaying, it is necessary to control the sampling error of the standard material, so that it is only a minor constituent of the discrepancies observed in any assay results. To do this requires that the particle size of the standard material be reduced to a point where the relative standard deviation of the sampling error (i.e... the standard deviation of the errors divided by the average gold content of the material) is 2% or less. For all but very homogeneous mineralization, this means that the material must be reduced to 100% -150 mesh before the sampling errors are adequately controlled. However, even reducing the particle size can contribute to sampling problems. The liberation of gold may cause segregation that can cause large sampling fluctuations that are not easily controlled while maintaining the desired grade. Because, in most cases, the standard material would already be in the "pulp" state when it is submitted to a lab for assay, it is not possible to entirely conceal the nature of the sample from the lab. This is a problem inherent in using assay standard material. Because of the contribution of sampling to error generation in the assay process, the use of "coarse" material does not solve the problem of submitting a totally "blind" standard to the lab. In the sections that follow, the selection, preparation, testing and use of gold fire assay standard material is discussed. While some may dismiss the production of standard material as folly, it is possible to produce and utilize standard material to stabilize and improve the fire-assay process to produce more reliable assay results. Material selection It is desirable to use material that has as nearly the same metallurgical characteristics as the samples with which the standards will be included. However, this is usually difficult. For many reasons, including the particle size at which a significant amount of the gold mineral is liberated, the sampling characteristics of even -150-mesh material may preclude the use of geologically and metallurgically similar ore as a standard. It is usually easier to get material having desirable grade characteristics with the necessary sampling properties than it is to find geologically and metallurgically similar material with the required sampling characteristics. High-grade standards are especially difficult to find and prepare. This is because, as grade increases, the size of the gold particles usually increases. Larger gold particles are liberated and tend to segregate during comminution, and the homogeneity of the material cannot be maintained. For grades much above 3 g/t (0.088 oz/ton), it is very difficult to find material that has the proper sampling properties. Old mill tailings are likely candidates for assay standards. Some of these have sufficiently homogeneous mineral contents, so that the sampling errors can be effectively controlled. Where mill tailings are either not available or are not acceptable, mineralization that has exhibited homogeneous results in reassays of the pulp material is also a good candidate for the standard. Finally, the mineralized rock being sampled may (and should) be used if adequate homogeneity in the -150mesh material exists. "Adequate" ("acceptable") homogeneity is defined below.) The Kinross DeLamar Mine has been operated for more than 17 years producing precious metals dore' from ores, principally silver bearing with associated gold co-products. In late 1995 a new orebody was commissioned, the Stone Cabin orebody, and the site began a phased shift from silver dominance to gold dominance in terms of precious metals revenue. The Knelson Concentrator was selected to remove gold from a portion of the cyclone underflow stream in the grinding circuit. This paper describes the development of the flow sheet, specific mineralogical impacts on Knelson product and downstream materials, and impacts on mine/mill grade reconciliation.

This proceedings volume contains papers presented at technology transfer seminars sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on New Technology for Ground Control in Retreat Mining. The seminars were conducted at five locations: Uniontown, PA (March 26, 1997), Norton, VA (April 8, 1997), Pikeville, KY (April 10, 1997), Charleston, WV (April 17, 1997), and Evansville, IN (April 22, 1997). The papers presented here describe several new, highly practical technologies developed by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers3 to improve safety during pillar retreat operations. Two central issues are addressed: pillar design and mobile roof supports (MRS's). Proper pillar sizing is essential for safe pillar extraction. The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program and its large data base of actual mining case histories are presented. LAMODEL, a second computer program, can be used for analysis of multiple-seam and other complex mining situations. Other papers address pillar design to avoid massive pillar collapses and the proper role of coal strength testing. MRS's have greatly improved safety where they are used for pillar line support. We studied the application of MRS's at 20 mines throughout the Eastern United States. Conclusions regarding the most effective section layouts, cut sequences, and support placements are reported. Field and laboratory tests of MRS's are also described.

"In developing a backfill system handling tailings feed to and from the storage silo, it is necessary to establish a slurry laboratory to develop the technology and silo design criteria. This paper presents the principles involved in such development and the importance of testing principles for optimizing the slurry system. Evaluation procedure based on experiments is applicable to a wide range of materials and allows silo design by scaling up the data gained from model tests. Silo simulation has been successful to design and operation, so becomes an effective approach to backfill applications. IntroductionThe silo is a device comprising specialized equipment and operating with related procedures for storing and handling the mill rejects as backfill slurry. It provides a steady supply of the solids slurry, prepared at desired pulp density under the continuous feed conditions. Because the silo system is designed to accomplish specific objectives when dealing with a particular mill tailings slurry, it is necessary to characterize certain slurry properties, behaviour of the solids slurry and understand the silo performance to establish design criteria. Bench-scale, pilot-scale and dewafull- scale experiments were employed in developing the load-storage-discharge system, and routine procedures are now available for pre-design testing. Silo model experiments and full-scale tests were conducted to define the design parameters and evaluate the silo performance. A silo can be designed by scaling up the silo model geometry and data obtained during tests.Since the early 1960s, silo backfill systems have been widely established. The shape and size of the silo and the operation procedure, as practised, all appear to be relevant to successful operation. Understanding the basic material properties and behaviour of solids slurry retained in the silo will help perfect the silo design, operation procedure and, consequently, improve the silo performance."

Abstract - A consistency-driven pairwise comparisons method for mineral potential assessment is presented, using a simplified case of volcanic-associated massive sulfide type deposits as an example. Geological, geochemical, and geophysical criteria are considered on two levels: local and regional. The local geological criteria are subdivided into stratigraphy, lithology, alteration and/or mineralization, and structure. The concept of geomerit index and a procedure for computing this index are introduced. The method of consistency-driven pairwise comparisons can be combined with other quantitative and qualitative assessment methods, enhancing them by incorporation of nonmeasurable geological criteria (e.g., stratigraphy or lithology) and by computation of weights. The consistency-driven approach allows experts to refine at-times subjective judgments concerning exploration and land-use planning, and contributes to the improvement of mineral-potential assessments.

"Abstract-Measurement of natural radioactivity has been used in both a qualitative and a quantitative way in mineral exploration, particularly in the search for uranium. In the last five years, the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) and British Geological Survey (BGS) have designed, built and tested a new detector system that greatly improves quantitative applications in mineral exploration, especially on the seafloor and in the nearshore zone. The new system is an enhancement of an earlier BGS design. The major improvements comprise the use of a highly sensitive ?-ray detector, together with new data processing, from which concentrations of natural radionuclides may be deduced in real time. After laboratory analysis of samples, these concentrations can be converted into mineral percentages. Once the mineralogy of an area has been characterized, this conversion can also be done in real time.Thus far the system has mainly been used to map heavy-mineral concentrations in coastal subtidaland intertidal sediments. For such work the multi-sensor detector probe is towed on the seafloor and various parameters are recorded continuously. The probe contains, in addition to the gamma-ray detector, a water-pressure sensor (giving water depth) and an acoustic device to measure bottom roughness. The system, when used together with high-precision positioning systems such as D-GPS, enables the production of detailed maps of bathymetry, bottom roughness, and seafloor radioactivity or mineral distribution. These maps allow mineral concentrations to be readily correlated with seabed topography and sediment type. In the same way, ?-ray detectors could be used advantageously during dredging operations to provide on-line assessment of the mineral content of the dredged sediment as well as to guide the direction of dredging. Additionally, the same technique could be used to monitor the subsequent fate of a dredge spoil after dumping on the seafloor.Natural radioactivity arising from potassium and the thorium and uranium decay series has potential use for the fast and reliable assessment of siliciclastic and phosphatic impurities in limestones. Detection of such impurities may preclude the use of the limestone for chemical or cement production.Apart from its use in exploration, the technique has significant potential in mineral processing, particularly of heavy minerals. It can be applied as on-line quality control in dry and wet separation processes and for process control, by using decisions based on the results to control valves and other instrumentation. In addition, it can also be used in environmental monitoring of waste arising from mineral extraction and processing. In conclusion, the technique described has a diversity of applications in exploration, mining and mineral processing."

Since 1986, we have developed a series of electromagnetic (EM) sounding systems at the Laboratory for Advanced Subsurface Imaging (LASI). These may be categorized by their frequency ranges: low frequency (LF, 30 Hz to 30 kHz), medium frequency (MF, 1 kHz to 1 MHz), and high frequency (HF, 30 kHz to 30 MHz). We have applied these EM systems to a variety of targets, including: mapping of plumes of contaminated groundwater, tracing leachate for an in-situ leaching operation, locating buried hazardous waste, identifying subsidence-prone zones and detecting buried voids. These systems are also applicable to exploration for ore bodies. Currently, our sounding system uses a vertical magnetic field vector. Previous systems of this type required a slow and relatively inaccurate manual rotation of the sensing coils. The systems also used occasional calibrations of the measuring system. We have developed a 3-dimensional mathematical rotation procedure for the data, as well as a simultaneous, high-accuracy, calibration method. These new developments have greatly increased the speed of the measurements, as well as improving the accuracy of the ellipticity data. We use stepped-frequency measurements along with narrow-band filtering to allow accurate measurements, even in high-noise areas. We typically obtain ellipticity measurements at eleven frequencies and along densely sampled profile lines. We use neural networks to help interpret the measured ellipticity patterns. Neural networks can be trained to relate the measured ellipticity patterns to earth resistivities or to discrete targets buried in the earth. The neural network training may use theoretical EM responses calculated from computer codes for relatively simple structures. The theoretical EM response for many complex targets that are of interest cannot currently be reliably calculated, even with the largest supercomputers available. We have therefore chosen to do some of the training using theoretical EM responses generated in a full-scale modeling tank located at our Avra Valley Geophysical Test Site. We have also developed data-visualization software to help interpret the large data sets produced by this system.

"Heap leaching of gold ores has enjoyed wide acceptance in the arid and semi-arid regions of the western U.S., Australia and South America. There are areas, however, where cold weather or excessive precipitation can limit the usefulness of heap leaching. Even in Nevada difficulties can be encountered which call for special operating procedures.The paper discusses the general climatological limitations and some of the techniques used to extend heap leaching into colder conditions. A case history of the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company operation in Colorado examines 'valley-fill"" technology as an ideal cold-climate solution, where topographical conditions permit.AcknowledgementsThe authors gratefully acknowledge the management of Independence Mining Company for their permission to present this paper. The contributions of Golder Associates; Pikes Peak Mining Company Environmental Affairs Department staff, and the Colorado Department of Mines and Geology were all invaluable in successfully concluding this project.BackgroundWhen heap leaching of oxidized gold ores was introduced in the rnid-1970s it was aimed at large tonnages of low-grade material which could not, in general, be developed via conventional milling. Normally, the reasons for this were economic rather than technical: capital and operating costs for milling were simply too high. At first, grade was almost the only criterion, but deposits too small to justify milling were also potential targets for heap leaching.Renewed interest in gold was centered in the western United States and Australia, where exploration for milling-grade deposits had never really died. When heap leaching came along, it was in these areas that the first developments took place. Coincidentally, these same areas were favorable for heap leaching: climates were temperate for most of the year and competing land uses were limited. Even so, in the western United States in particular, winter temperatures were low enough to complicate operations. Precipitation was less a problem, although heavy snowfalls could periodically interfere as well."

The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. Abstract-Narrow veins are an important world-wide source of silver, tin, uranium and particularly gold. To potential financiers, this style of mineralization is viewed as high risk because of the often relatively small resource involved and high cost of estimation. In many cases diamond core drilling will not enable resource estimation beyond the inferred and indicated categories. Exploratory underground development is required to define measured resources. The definition of geological and grade continuity are major factors in narrow vein assessment. A measured resource must be based on strong geological and grade continuities. Narrow veins, generally less than 3 m wide, are complex geological phenomena, which commonly display unpredictable geometry and grade distribution. Variations in structural continuity, dip, strike, width, mineralogy and specific gravity are common. Veins may be composite, with ore-grade mineralization restricted to a specific structural domain. Branches, intersections and braided zones are common features. Potentially high-grade zones are often localized within ore shoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade regions. Resources must be determined as closely as possible to reality and reflect the distribution of the commodity in the rock. Estimation has three main requirements: (1) geological study to determine orebody nature; (2) estimation of tonnage and grade, and (3) the presentation of this information using a classification that is clear, unambiguous and bankable. Estimation methods employed are either classical or geostatistical; however, classical methods are often used because of the difficulties in applying geostatistics. Grades generally show a strong positively skewed distribution testifying the presence of high-grade values. Problems exist in the applicability of cutting outlier values risking over- or underestimation of grade. It is generally believed that where resource estimates are in error, poor geological control is usually the cause. Overestimation can lead to the closure of a mine through lost revenue and capital. An understated estimate can result in an opportunity missed for profit and/or greater economies of scale. Definition of reserves involves the consideration of economic and engineering data, to decide which part of the resource is economically mineable. Geology plays a similarly important role at this stage in the assessment of likely mining method, dilution, recovery etc. Throughout resource/reserve estimation, it is crucial that the amount and quality of the data and the geologist’s experience are relevant. The impact of geological understanding on estimation is often undervalued or assumed to be of lesser importance than finding grades and tonnages. This paper discusses the geology of narrow vein deposits and the importance of geology in their evaluation.

In 1996, O&K Orenstein and Koppel Inc. announced big plans to increase its presence in the US mining market. Even though the company, a part of Ger- man-based O&K Mining GmbH, has been in the United States for about 100 years, it has lived in relative anonymity. That despite being one of the largest makers of hydraulic mining shovels and excavators in the world. The plan must be working. In the 14 months through December 1996,O&K increased its sales to surface mines and quarries in the United States by 250'70, according Rolf Weber, company president. "In the next five years, we anticipate total revenue from our US operations will grow from the current $50 million to $200 million," he said. "Toward that end, we have concentrated our efforts on the supply of reliable, high-output machinery and responsive service after the sale."

A quantitative rockburst hazard assessment procedure was introduced on Elandsrand Gold Mine at the end of 1994. It is currently used to evaluate the seismicity-related risk in production areas on the mine. Six parameters related to seismicity, geology, mining layout, and production are rated and results are used as a planning tool on a regular basis. The applied assessment can be considered successful in that it promotes awareness of the seismic hazard and provides an opportunity to address seismicity-related mining problems. A comparison between high risk panels and those working areas with rockburst incidents showed that high hazard ratings reliably forecast the occurrence of larger events in the following month but they do not necessarily predict those working places with rockburst-related accidents. From this one may conclude that high levels of seismicity do not coincide with high rockburst rates.

Most mining and metallurgical plants have developed predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis, oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies have also been installed in several metallurgical sites. These control strategies require instrumentation maintenance from local personnel. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is a must for global plant optimization. Specialized performance control monitoring algorithms are required to justify their existence and contribution to the bottom line. Emerging technologies are combining these techniques into a single total plant system. Tools are required to assist in troubleshooting and adapting these process control instruments and strategies. The key is the plant equipment and process control availability and utilization rather than just maintenance.

In order to investigate the explosibility of sulphide mineral dusts, sulphide ore samples were collected from five underground metalliferous mines in Australia. The mineralogical and chemical composition of the dust samples was analysed by X-Ray Powder Diffraction and Atomic Absorption techniques. Simulated post detonation fumes were produced and used in dust explosibility tests to examine the influence of the fumes on sulphide dust ex- plosions. These tests were conducted in a 20 Litre Siwek Explosion Chamber with measurement and control system that is regarded as a standard testing system worldwide for dust explosion studies. The dust mineralogical composition and dust explosibility tests indicated that the content of sulphur can not accurately predict the explosibity of the sulphide dust. The percentage content of pyrite in the sulphide dust can be a relatively reliable diagnostic criterion in evaluating the risk of sulphide dust explosions in the mining of a massive sulphide orebody. The hybrid explosion tests demonstrated that the post detonation fumes from ANFO not only decrease the lower explosion limit of the sulphide dusts, but also increase the severity of the dust explosions. The explosion pressure reaches its peak value when the fumes content in the explosion chamber is about 20 per cent by volume

The understanding and the development of sound theoretical basis concerning the pile foundations has been phenomenal during the past few decades, considering the thousands of years the piles have evidently been in use. The importance of the quality assurance and the need for verification of load bearing capacity is being further reinforced rather than undermined by these developments. This is evidenced by significant developments made in the pile load test technology in recent decades, making it possible to make judicious selection of a test method, or a package of test methods, suitable for a given situation. The selection depends on the objective of carrying out the test and the reliability desired. Presently, the possible selection ranges from dynamic to static methods. The extent of dynamic effect in a test can be reckoned based on a dimensionless parameter defined as the 'relative duration'. Examples of different load tests are given for illustration of the different methods currently in use.
