The directions for ventilation control are often given in linguistic styles such as "if the airflow rate measured is small, a high value of rotation on a local fan should be chosen." In order to control the underground climate using a computer instead of a human being, both the reliability of data values measured underground and the application of human recognition of data values are required. The efficiency of data transmission is dependent on a method of checking a signal which is changed by mixing noises resulting from cases of electrical and mechanical damage to cables. In the study, fuzzy reasoning is adopted to choose a checking method for underground conditions from a normally operating state to an emergency. Fuzzy reasoning is applied to control airflow rate under the linguistic control rules given. It is shown that an effective series of linguistic control rules derived by fuzzy-sets theory is available in ventilation control when used in conjunction with an air velocity sensor, a computer and a local fan with thyristor control. Moreover, a system to make an optimum series of linguistic control rules for ventilation control is introduced.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to assist explorationists and entrepreneurs in deciding whether to invest in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs) and, if so, in deciding which LDCs provide the best opportunity. The first decision is difficult in the face of common notions that foreigners are not welcome - only their money; that the best gold deposits were worked out long ago; that even if you survive the mal- aria, and in spite of 51% control by a national partner, you manage to profit from a new discovery, they will tax your operation to death, or worse yet, nationalize it. Close scrutiny of what happened to foreign investors in LDCs during the “Mexicanizationt” of the 1930's through the "Zambianization" of the 1970's shows that many of these concerns are well-founded historically. But the trend of knowledgeable writers over the past decade seems to be away from this gloomy foreboding, and towards a cautious optimism, based on recently perceptible metamorphoses in certain LDCs' conditions and attitudes. If the explorationist or entrepreneur decides to seize on this apparent opportunity, the second decision -- which of these certain LDCs to invest in -- is doubly difficult, because of the formidable tasks of coming up with a rating system to provide rational comparison, and then gathering enough current, reliable information to apply. To assist in these tasks, a suggested rating system and case studies, respectively, follow a brief review of recent writings on the subject

The copper mineralization of the Mesozoic Passaic Formation of New Jersey is typical of copper deposits in eastern North American Mesozoic sediments. Most such deposits are located at the base of the first of several basalt flows that are interbedded with continental, red-bed sediments. The copper mineralization is similar in most respects to that of the Keweenawan Basalts of the Lake Superior area. The first basaltic flow units of the eastern North American Mesozoic basins, and the Keweenawan Basalts, are continental quartz tholeiites of similar chemical composition and copper contents. The copper minerals and associated zeolite facies metamorphic mineral assemblages of these two rock units are also approximately the same. Stoiber and Davidson (1959) suggested that Keweenawan copper was mobilized and concentrated during metamorphism. The evidence pertaining to the Mesozoic copper deposits of New Jersey is consistent with such an interpretation and also with DeVore's (1955) suggestion that ore fluids commonly arise as a result of the mobility of metals under metamorphic conditions. There is additional evidence that final metamorphic concentration of Mesozoic copper was preceded by an initial stage of hydrothermal precipitation related to fluids emitted by basaltic magma.

Real economic growth for the year will most likely exceed the Administration's estimate of 3.2%, up from 2.9% in 1986, unless consumers change their spending patterns more than expected as a result of the October stock market decline. The economy grew at a real annual rate of 3.7% in the first three quarters of the year, Analysts agree that the stock market decline will slow economic growth-- most have lowered their growth expectations for 1988 by about 1%; but few would argue that the economy will slow significantly in the fourth quarter of 1987. [ ] During this economic recovery, personal consumption expenditures provided the main impetus for growth and a deeping trade deficit, the main hindrance to growth. In 1987, however, personal consumption expenditures grew at a lower rate than the overall economy. Mush of the economic growth resulted from a reduced trade deficit and growing investment by business in equipment to improve productivity and to meet the domestic and foreign demand for products. The declining value of the dollar resulted in a better competitive position for U.S. goods but also contributed to a rising rate of inflation as imports rose in price. Inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted index for gross national product, was still far below the rates in the early 1980k, however. More than 2 million jobs were created during the year, predominantly in the service sectors of the economy, and the monthly unemployment rate in September fell to the lowest level in a decade. Then, after 13 months of decline, the unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage point to 5.9% in October.

From a detailed combustion testing program and earlier experience with Leigh Creek coal, the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) gained a wide insight into the use of low rank coal fired boiler plant. This work is fundamental for the selection of boiler design parameters and other details which in turn determine the correct coal deposit selection for future power station development. In addition it gives boiler designers a good indication of the measures required to give reliable plant operation. Extrapolation from experience with existing plant, the designers main source of information, was not considered appropriate because of the lack of experience with similar coals. Brown coal beneficiation is also being assessed by ETSA in an attempt to improve the coal quality by the pretreatment of the raw coal prior to combustion in future coal.fired boilers. ETSA is also involved in the development of circulating fluid bed and gasification processes to determine whether these alternative processes are a more viable method of utilising the South Australian coals than pulverised fuel firing.

"An approach to the in situ testing of mine backfills is outlined. It has been developed to provide a measure of the effective strength and stiffness of such materials after placement in stopes. This paper is based upon recent field studies undertaken at five Quebec mines. Details of the selected instrumentation, supporting equipment and testing procedures are reviewed. The mechanical behaviour of the backfills is reported and related to their physical properties. This approach represents an economical, simple and reliable means to assess the mechanical characteristics of backfill materials as an aid to both mine design and placement quality control. IntroductionDevelopments in backfill and mining method technology are creating a pressing need to develop effective techniques for characterizing the physical and mechanical properties of backfill in situ, rather than relying on traditional laboratory testing. The development of bulk mining methods is creating the requirement to more fully understand the nature of exposed fill faces to design for stability in pillar recovery operations. Other backfill technological developments currently receiving widespread attention are high density placement and the use of alternative additives to Portland cement. In Canada, U.S.A. and South Africa attention is also being placed on employing backfill to alleviate rockburst hazards(1,2.3l. In situ testing offers the potential to measure the geomechanical properties of backfill once placed in stopes , in order to assess its actual role in pillar recovery and ground support. Similarly, it offers the ability to provide some quality control during backfill placement. This role is seen as becoming increasingly important with the growing recognition of the need to pay greater attention to the mode of placement, which governs segregation and variation in the properties actually achieved by the backfill after placement."

Five LANDSAT lineaments in the coal mining region of southwestern Pennsylvania were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to determine their geologic character, relation to subsurface conditions, and the means of discriminating one from another. The investigation included earth resistivity and very low frequency (VLF) electromagnetic traverses, soil moisture sampling, and a correlation with coal mine roof conditions. The lineaments could not be detected by the methods used, suggesting that they might be a surface phenomenon unrelated to subsurface geologic structures or roof stability in coal mine workings beneath.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen's formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. "A non-destructive testing program was established at Crows Nest Resources (C.N.R.), Line Creek mining operation following an in-service fatigue failure of a front wheel spindle on a large haulage truck.This failure identified a definite need for improvements in the ultrasonic techniques used during the mandatory spindle integrity examinations. Initial investigations using common mining industry ultrasonic examination techniques showed that the smallest detectable cracks were 75 mm in length for the spindle types in service at the C.N.R. site. The Initial findings indicated that inadequate inspection technique design was the cause of the poor performance. To improve inspection reliability it was identified that improved ultrasonic techniques were required. Results using designed ultrasonic techniques were encouraging, with the detection of simulated and natural cracks 12 mm long achieved. The cost benefits associated with the extended spindle life, following the removal of these small fatigue cracks, far exceeded those of the expertise and effort necessary to implement and conduct the N.D.T. program.Introduction During 50 years of evolution, non-destructive testing (N.D. T.) has progressed from a laboratory curiosity to a well accepted and invaluable tool used in the assessment of material integrity. Unlike destructive testing, N.D.T. does not deform or render the material useless. Non-destructive tests may involve many applications, from the determination of a corrosion prevention coating thickness to the examination of a raw material for internal and external deformities.Within the mining sector, highly-stressed components will normally have been subjected to some form of non-destructive test during their manufacturing cycle. These tests are used to ensure the component does not contain material flaws whichmay be detrimental to its service performance.While the component may have assured quality when produced, deterioration by fatigue may occur during an aggressive service life. Large dynamically-loaded components such as haulage truck front wheel spindles are , in particular, prone to this service related problem."

As part of an ongoing study to determine how the wear of mining tools affects dust generation, the Bureau of Mines has measured bit tempera-ture rise during cutting of abrasive rock. Radial bit wear-flat tem-peratures generated by linear cutting in Berea Sandstone were measured as a function of cutting depth and speed. Depths of cut (DOC) were 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in, and cutting speeds were 10, 40, and 80 in/s, respectively. Temperature sensing was accomplished by emplacement of a miniature thermocouple into the center of the wear flat. Temperatures observed ranged from 2000 to 5000 C. Correlation between depth and temperature was weak. Temperature increased linearly with speed at 1/2-in DOC, but data taken at 1/8-and 1/4-in DOC produced inconclusive results. The results indicated that at least for deeper cuts (1/2 in), bit temperature, and therefore wear, can be reduced by lowering the cutting speed.

This Bureau of Mines report describes several significant problems associated with absenteeism among underground coal miners. The vast empirical literature on employee absenteeism is reviewed, and a conceptual model of the factors that cause absenteeism among miners is presented. Portions of this model were empirically tested by performing correlational and multiple regression analyses on data collected from a group of 64 underground coal miners. The results of these tests are presented and discussed.

The economy continued to expand during the third quarter, as real GNP rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.8%, up from 2.5% in the second quarter (table 1). Continued job gains (see below), higher incomes, and an increase in installment debt, resulted in a nearly 20% increase in consumer spending on durable goods. Consumer expenditure on nondurables fell slightly, while spending on services continued at a moderate pace. Nonresidential fixed investment climbed nearly 24%, as producers purchased more durable equipment. Residential fixed investment was adversely affected by rising interest rates, which slowed new home construction from January to August, 1987 to a rate 11.2% below a comparable period in 1986. Net exports of goods and services deteriorated slightly, after three consecutive quarters of improvement. The volume of net exports has risen 15% for the year, contributing to economic and employment growth, but large price increases on imports have slowed the improvement in the nominal trade balance. Although U.S. goods have declined in price relative to foreign goods because of the devaluation of the dollar, faster growth in exports is hampered by austerity programs in developing countries, and emphasis in Germany and Japan on curtailing inflation and fiscal deficits.

Studies of the minor element content of sphalerite and pyrite have generally been concerned with individual deposits or localised groups of deposits. However, a small number of more regional investigations have been reported (e.g. Davidson, 1962; Groves and Loftus-Hills, 1968; Loftus-Hills and Solomon, 1967; Price, 1972; Bralia et al., 1979) which have used the minor element abundances to evaluate the petrogenesis and geological affinities of diverse ore types and to fingerprint metallogenic provinces (e.g. Ivanov, 1964). While generally held to be valid, some doubts have nevertheless been cast on the reliability of minor element abundances in petrogenetic deliberations (e.g. Mercer, This paper reports on the distribution of he. Cpl and Mn in sphalerite, and Co, Ni and Mn in pyrite, from sulphide mineral occurrences within the "eugeosynclinal" prism comprising the New England Region of north-eastern New South Wales and south- eastern Queensland (Fig. 1). The occurrences examined are representative of two well-defined styles of mineralisation (Stanton et al., 1974) within which clear patterns of ore-rock distribution give rise to specific metal associations (Herbert. 1977).

In addition to products available from private vendors, many useful programs are developed at universities - in fact, many of these programs led the way to commercial development. Other projects are assigned to consultants with backgrounds in system design and mining. Both types of development have led to programs that can be acquired for the cost of a tape or disk. Arsenic plays a major role during electroreflning of copper. Both the arsenic content in the anode and the arsenic concentration of the electrolyte have, in conjunction with other impurities such as lead, antimony, bismuth and oxygen, a direct influence on the quality of the cathode. The mechanisms are currently slime. inclusion and precipitation of insoluble compounds in the bulk of the electrolyte. Arsenic has also been reported to have a depassivating effect on the anode. An influence on the anode slime adhesion has also been found. A literature survey is given and these data are compared with and completed by our own results based on lab and pilot scale experiments as well as on Olen tank.house practice.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the time-dependent behavior of coal measure rocks for future implementation in stability analysis and safety evaluation of in-mine rock structures. This initial study focused on moisture adsorption rate and strength degradation of shales in Pennsylvanian coal-bearing strata in the Illinois Basin. A reaction of clay minerals in Illinois shales with atmospheric water vapor was hypothesized as the adsorption and strength degradation mechanism. Part of energy exchange between shales and the environment was attributed to a free energy controlled by pore pressure of the rock and partial pressure in the environment. The relationships between adsorption versus time and strength degradation versus moisture content were derived and correlated with the experimental data. Partial saturation at various levels of relative humidity occurs within approximately 2 weeks at room temperature. The strength of shales tested decreases linearly with increasing moisture content. When the moisture exceeds 7 pct of the dry weight, these Illinois shales become unstable. To this end, the moisture content is a good predictor of rock strength for shales.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews hypotheses for the mechanism by which water jets reduce the specific energy of cutting for drag bits. Several of these hypotheses are shown to be inconsistent with published evidence and new observations. The notion of a limiting cutting speed, above which water jets would be incapable of rendering assistance, is shown to be improbable. The hypothesis that seems most plausible is that specific energy reductions are mainly due to the erosion of crushed materials from in front of the bit. This hypothesis leads to a prediction that, for a given rock type and jet-bit configuration at a constant depth of cut, the reduction in bit forces should be a function of dM/dx, the jet energy spent per unit length of cut. This dependence upon dW/dx is shown to be consistent with other workers? results.

The McLaughlin Mill started operating in January, 1985. For the first eighteen (18) months start-up, initial operation, and circuit debottlenecking have been done. The mill was designed to recover gold from a refractory ore requiring acid autoclaving pretreatment. This paper discusses the problem associated with bringing this complex hydro-metallurgical plant to consistently achieve design tonnages. Also, briefly described are the mill flowsheet, training program, permitting, and process and project development.

During the design of copper refinery tankhouses, there is a need to develop mass balance calculations for many process components, so that optimum physical plant configuration is achieved. Each mass balance is complex, possibly with over 120 interactive variables as basic input data. Recent developments in tankhouse design (e.g. permanent cathodes) have greatly increased the design options available for any project, multiplying even further the requirement for calculations. In the past these calculations were tedious and susceptible to human error. A comprehensive computer program can now simplify the task of the process metallurgist, enabling more sophisticated and sensitive plant designs to be produced. The paper describes the successful development of a flexible mass balance program that originallly was used in a feasibility study which had to be completed within a short time schedule. The program has been further developed and used for design and energy calculations; it can be usefully applied to existing plants to assess the impact of variations in operating parameters. The software takes account of staged liberation, electrolyte purification bleed and generates a reliable process inventory listing: it can also cope with stripper starting sheet options and disparate commercial circuits.
