This Bureau of Mines report deals with water infusion of coalbeds, which can control methane emission at face areas during developmental mining and which may sometimes suppress dust. Studies show that water infused into the coalbed flows through the fracture system and displaces the methane in the fractures and prevents migration from the solid coal. Displaced gas migrates away from the face area that has been water infused and enters the return ventilation airways. A gradual decrease in methane emission is observed from the start of infusion until the infused zone is mined through. Depending on the permeability of the coalbed, infusion pressures ranged from 300 to 2,200 lb/in2. Face emissions in the Upper Kittanning coalbed were reduced by 89 pct; reductions of 38 to 79 pct were measured in the Pittsburgh coalbed depending on the relationship between the face cleat direction and mining direction. Respirable dust levels were reduced by about 75 pct on a longwall section in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed and by about 50 pct on a development section in the Upper Kittanning coalbed, but no statistically reliable reduction was found in the respirable dust levels in the Pittsburgh coalbed.

This paper deals primarily with the different types of drilling methods used by the Iron. Ore Company of Canada for sampling the soft and friable hematite-limonite (secondary) iron ore deposits found in the Scheferville area. The problems associated with drilling, sampling, sample handling and sample preparation. for chemical analysis of these ores are discussed. Systematic evaluation of the various drilling methods led to the selection of an integrated drilling system. This system consists of a rotary dual- tube - reverse-circulation drill, with tricone bit, polymer mud and mechanical sample splitter, The historic al development of this drilling system is described in detail, as are the equipment , sample flow and quality control checks carried out to obtain representative samples. This integrated drilling and sampling system has been used satisfactorily on a routine basis for determining the grade and tonnage of ore for the various deposits for the last five years (1972-76) in the Schefferville area.

An economic simulation model was developed to predict the amount of copper recovered from copper oxide deposits and the cost of producing it as a function of the deposit parameters. The economic simulation model includes models of fragmentation design and cost, copper extraction, solution distribution and recovery, effluent solution cutoff grade, and financial analysis. Cost and price indices were also developed to evaluate the economic feasibility of in situ leaching operations as a function of their starting date. Application of the models to various properties having the same area and different ore thickness shows that the effluent solution cutoff grade does not vary with the ore thickness nor with its grade. The percent of copper recovery is, however, shown to increase with the increase in the ore thickness and is independent of the ore grade. it is also shown that while the profit per unit of extracted copper increases with the increase in ore grade or ore thickness, the rate of return on total investment does not show any correlation

Due to improvements in the safety of other aspects of mining (primarily in roof control), haulage related accidents, particularly rail haulage accidents, are about to become the most common category of hazards causing death and injuries to underground coal miners. The major causes of these accidents are collisions between vehicles, men caught between rib and trip or between cars, derailments, and runaway cars. Such hazards can be greatly reduced if the motorman has the capability to selectively couple and uncouple cars from the cab of the locomotive, to transmit braking intelligence to the coupled cars, to determine if the trip is intact, and if brakes are automatically applied in any uncoupled car. These capabilities can be provided through an improved coupler system, designed and built by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines contract. Early in the program, a survey of rail haulage patents and literature was conducted. Manufacturers of couplers, mine cars and braking systems were contacted and information relevant to the remote control mine haulage application was collected. From this information evolved a working specification and a design concept. The key elements of the specification, shown in Table I, are the result of a detailed tradeoff study and considerable thought given to the specific problems encountered in the mining environment. A brief explanation of each element is as follows: Automatic Coupling - The couplers operate similarly with most already in underground use - they latch together when a trip is backed into a car intended for coupling. Remote Uncoupling - From the locomotive, the motorman can decide how many cars are to be uncoupled, operate the appropriate controls, and the desired coupler is opened.

An inventory of the mineral resources of a region is a most desirable basis for planning their systematic development. In the absence of appropriate samples upon which to base a reliable estimate of this inventory, investigators have resorted to a number of indirect approaches; the unit regional value concept forms the basis for one such approach. The produced resources of a region are a function of the inventory multiplied by the degree of intensity (some fraction between zero and one) of development of the resources. A convenient means of expressing this amount is to accumulate the weight and value of resource and to prorate the totals over the area represented by the unit sampled; i.e., weight and value per unit area or tonnes/km.2 and U.S. 1967 $/km.2. When this approach is used for the U.S.A., South Africa and Rhodesia the average value of (log.) U.S. 67$/km.2 for the states of the U.S.A. and South Africa are similar ($55,176 U.S.$67/km.2 and $52,538/km.2 respectively); whereas, Rhodesia is relatively underdeveloped (10,301 U.S.67$/km.2). On the other hand if the individual commodities are used as a basis for comparison, the U.S.A. shows the greatest diversity (67 commodities out of a possible total of 75) with South Africa next (50 commodities) and Rhodesia last with only 26 commodities. Since it is known that area and value are not simply related perhaps diversity is directly related to area. Again the kinds of commodities which have contributed the greatest value to the totals differs, with fuels (petroleum, coal and natural gas) predominating in the U.S.A. totals; whereas, South Africa and Rhodesia obtain their greatest contributions from gold, diamonds (S. Africa) coal and asbestos. In each case the greatest value of resources is produced from sedimentary rocks. As a somewhat different kind of example, consider a single resource (petroleum, the most valuable in the U.S.A.) over a large area (number of sampling units) the U.S.A. by state. Furthermore, assume that the model frequency distribution of the amount of petroleum (tonnes/km.2) is log normal. Then the present production fails to match the model first because 17 states (34% out of 50) have not produced petroleum. Of the remaining 33 states, Louisiana has produced the most (15,177 tonnes/km.2) and the frequency histogram is still skew. A spatial analysis of the distribution of the amount of petroleum by state shows that the samples (i.e., states) are not random; the non-producers and producers tend to cluster. It remains to be seen if this is indeed a true representation of the incidence of petroleum or is a function of the exploration philosophy currently in vogue.

A new Code of Practice for the brake performance of off -highway vehicles was established in Alberta in 1976. Vehicles loaded to gross vehicle weight must be capable of stopping with mechanical brakes five times in quick succession on a grade of 10 per cent from a speed of 28 miles per hour. Comparative trials of various brake systems have been carried out and some combinations capable of meeting the Code are identified. Some problem areas in truck braking are reviewed and potential developments indicated.

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). This Bureau of Mines report presents a method for combining the distribution curves at different specific gravities of separation, for a given piece of coal-cleaning equipment and a given raw coal feed, into a single, generalized distribution curve normalized with respect to specific gravity and, therefore, independent of the specific gravity of separation. Illustrative generalized distribution curves, based upon Bureau of Mines collected data on industrial operations, are presented for five different types of coal-cleaning equipment. The well-known concept of probable error is extended to the generalized distribution curve. It is shown that the conventional probable error is directly proportional to the specific gravity of separation. A number of sample calculations, illustrating the use of the generalized distribution curve and generalized probable error, are presented in the appendix.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engines in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. This bibliography, therefore, is a compilation of references from interdisciplinary sources pertaining to diesels and related areas. Related areas are defined as those concerned with: (i) mine ventilation system design and operation; (ii) description, measurement, modeling and monitoring of mine atmosphere contaminants, and (iii) tests, standards, selection procedures, and operational practices for internal combustion engines in underground mines. The Falconbridge Matte Leach Process yields high-purity nickel chloride by selectively dissolving nickel from copper-nickel converter matte with hydrochloric acid , purifying the solution by solvent extraction and crystallizing NiCl2 4H2O by further acidifying the purified leach liquor. In the Kristiansand Matte Leach Plant, a granular oxide is produced by high-temperature hydrolysis of the nickel chloride for subsequent reduction to a high-purity granular metal product, designated NICKEL 98. This paper describes the investigation of on alternate route to processing nickel chloride in which high-quality cathode nickel is produced by electrowinning from all- chloride electrolyte. The investigation was made in a pilot circuit containing two production-size electrowinning tanks operated in conjunction with the commercial-scale leach plant.

The requirements of today's and tomorrow's markets led to a new generation of facilities which handles large tonnages annually, loading them into larger vessels, at higher rates, efficiently and reliably, with minimum labor input, and significantly greater attention to the environment. A great variety of products are handled, including various grades of metallurgical and steaming coal, coke, iron ore in its many forms, shapes and moisture content, phosphates and fertilizer products, bauxite and alumina ores, limestone, sugar and grains, cement and many other products. When we examine the annual tonnages involved in these movements the economic value of handling these products on a bulk basis can be readily seen. Although nearly all these products have been handled by continuous bulk conveyors for many years, recent governmental response to environmental concerns require a re-evaluation of previous procedures. Most air pollution and emission control regulations and ordinances have recognized several specific sources of pollution. Detailed regulations and requirements have been developed concerning smoke emissions, emissions of visible air contaminants and particulate matter from power plants, heating plants, refuse burning equipment, coke ovens, steel furnaces, kilns, and other industrial installations. Although fugitive dust is also an environmental pollutant it is governed by regulations that are more general and therefore, more difficult to apply. A general definition of a "fugitive particle" is any matter which escapes or becomes airborne from an operation or which is emitted into the atmosphere without passing or being conducted through a flue, pipe, stack or other structure designed for the purpose of emitting air pollutants into the atmosphere. This paper deals with the aspects of fugitive dust emissions as they apply to shiploading. Fugitive dust emissions control is important not only because of environmental regulations but also to prevent the loss of valuable product, reduce housekeeping, and reduce breakdown and maintenance problems to land and vessel equipment. The early and reliable detection of the self-heating of combustible substances in mines is of considerable importance to the mining community. This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a variety of studies of incipient combustion and its detection. Heated samples of coal, wood, and various polymers were used to evaluate the relative sensitivities of several types of detectors. The laboratory results indicate that submicrometer particulate detection is the most universal and sensitive method. Carbon monoxide detection was as sensitive as submicrometer particulate detection for pyrolyzing coal but was relatively insensitive to pyrolyzing wood or plastics. The conventional type of ionization smoke detector was the least sensitive for coal and of intermediate sensitivity for wood and plastics. Self-heating experiments with Pittsburgh seam coal piles of varying particle sizes gave ignition temperatures of 170° C for 4-to 7-µm dust, which increased monotonically with particle size. The measured heating rates were compared with data from an adiabatic calorimeter to obtain preexponential rate constants. The preexponential rate constants varied linearly with the surface area per unit mass of sample as would be expected for heterogeneous surface oxidation. The propagation behavior of ignition waves and the overall self-heating appears to depend critically on the magnitude of the convective flows induced, which counteract the depletion of oxygen in the void spaces of the pile. Classical theories of thermal ignition require substantial modification to be applied reliably to such cases.

Consolidation Coal Company, through the mining research division of Continental Oil Company, is now undertaking the installation of a full-scale hydraulic transportation system to carry coarse coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The facility will include all elements of a fully integrated haulage system including face haulage for both longwall and continuous miner sections, multiple slurry feeds, hydraulic hoisting and 2.4 miles of overland slurry transport. This undertaking is a result of more than six years of extensive research and testing, some of which has been previously releasted to the literature. To provide a reference framework for system description, a brief history of recent coal mining technological developments will be discussed. Following World War II, mechanization resulted in mining machines that were bigger, faster, more powerful, and more reliable. These changes were essentially refinements in an established mining system. They made mining more efficient than before, but they did not change the system itself. By about the mid-1960's, it was apparent that further improvements in the extraction machinery would have a declining payoff, simply because .the worst bottlenecks were in other components of the mining system. A modern continuous miner cannot be run continuously because other operations underground cannot keep pace. In fact, most continuous miners today run at less than 20% of capacity. Consequently, in 1969 Consol and its parent company, Continental Oil, undertook a long-range R&D program to try to change the basic haulage system for the better. Most coal at present is removed from the mine by a hand-off system in which the coal is transferred from the continuous miner to a shuttle car, often with the aid of a separate loader; then from the shuttle car to a system of conveyor belts; and finally from the conveyors to rail cars. The system involves a large amount of moving equipment underground, many transfer points, and the everpresent chance of operational delays and safety hazards. By removing the haulage bottleneck, we believe we can speed up underground operations substantially; and perhaps more important, we could make it feasible to develop a whole new generation of mining equipment that is inherently safer. What we wanted was a truly flexible, continuous haulage system with inherent safety advantages. Ideally the system had to meet three major requirements: First, the coal had to enter the transport system at the face, and remain in that same system all the way to the preparation plant. Second, the system had to be flexible and extensible so that it could- follow the mining machine as it advances and retracts. And, third, the system must be inherently safer than current haulage technology.

Statistical studies at Cyprus Pima Mine indicate that samples from 22 blastholes are necessary for determining average copper grades, within a desired range of precision, for mine-model blocks by arithmetic averaging. The average number of holes in such blocks is 14. Many considerations show that more holes will not be drilled for sampling. A way to determine block grades more reliably than by" arithmetic averaging was sought. Thus far arithmetic averaging has proven to be the best procedure for the particular operation characteristics despite the small number of samples. It naturally follows that expenditure of great effort in sampling blasthole cuttings is unwise.

The Bureau of Mines measured the vapor pressure of FeC12 , FeBr2, FeI2, Sb, Bi, Cd, Mg, Pb, FeC13 , and VCl2 using the Knudsen-and torsion-effusion methods, and on FeC13 -NaC1 mixtures, Au2Cl6, and MgNi2 using only the Knudsen method. Apparent vapor pressures calculated from the experimental data vary with orifice size and method of determination. Reaction with residual oxygen in the instruments was noted to have an effect on the iron halide data. Vapor pressure curves plotted as log P versus 1/T (where P is pressure and T is absolute temperature) for one substance using several orifice sizes tended to converge at a single point when extrapolated beyond the experimental region. All of the data, except those of VC12, agree with previously published results. The importance of comparing effusion measurements with those obtained by other methods and the variations encountered with various orifice sizes are discussed.

Literature research is an inexpensive, yet effective tool for the direct discovery of ore deposits. Case studies abundantly demonstrate that properties with viable mineralization and *proven reserves have been overlooked, forgotten. or ignored and can be rediscovered by inexpensive literature search techniques Areal studies s as WaIlaby Enterprises Mining District Data Base Program appear to be more effective than traditional commodity studies. The success of such studies depends on the inclusion of Mineral Clairant Questionnaire Data, Mineral Ownership Data, Field Examination Data and the continual updating of all information. Such studies are valuable for proposed or existing Wilderness Area Evaluations.

The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environ-mental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of environmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

The objective of delineation drilling is to provide a data base for the tonnage and grade estimates required to evaluate the economics of mine development. As drilling information is accumulated, geological risk is reduced and more reliable estimates of tonnage and grade are obtained. Investment in drilling is justified by the benefits which result from improving the reliability of the economic criteria evaluated. These benefits are subject to diminishing returns, i.e. as drilling information is accumulated the reliability of the economic criteria evaluated is improved but at a decreasing rate. At the same time, costs are incurred -- the direct investment cost associated with additional drilling and the time cost of delaying possible production revenues. The economic sampling limit is de- fined by the point at which the marginal benefits from drilling investment just balance the marginal costs. The paper describes the formulation of an economic model to optimize investment in delineation drilling. The model is applied to a simulated mineral deposit to illustrate the economic effects of a sequential drilling program.
