Fine colloidal gold near Carlin, Nevada is disseminated in leached carbonate strata of the Roberts Mountains Formation in the Lynn "window" of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault. The ore body is generally stratiform and is more or less conformable to altered beds near the top of the formation, underlying Devonian limestones. Two sequences of mineralization are recognized: ( 1) an earlier base metal-barite assemblage related to early Cretaceous intrusives (121 ± 5 m.y.), and (2) a later low temperature Au-As-Hg-Sb assemblage of near surface emplacement. The earlier sequence consisting of sparse galena and sphalerite in barite with anomalous amounts of zinc, lead, nickel and copper, associated with dikes of dacitic composition, is of little economic importance. The later sequence of gold, realgar, cinnabar, and stibnite associated with extensive silicification and argillic alteration of limestone beds, has resulted in important deposits of gold. Argillic alteration of hydrothermally leached carbonate strata has provided the environment in which the most prominent gold deposition took place. Carbonate minerals in the limestone host rock have been replaced by microcrystalline quartz and chalcedony to form stratiform silica masses and recrystallized lenses of euhedral quartz. Zones of porous silicification are light gray to white, elliptical in shape, and more or less follow bedding. Silicification is bordered by argillic alteration and pyritization. Deposition of gold usually lies in a zonal pattern that encircles chimney areas of silicification.

The ternary-alloy system Nb-Mo-C was investigated by means of X-ray, melting point, DTA, and metallo-graphic techniques; a complete phase diagram for temperatures above 1500°C was established. Above 1960°C, niobium monocarbide and the cubic (Bl) high-tenzperature phase in the Mo-C system form an uninterrupted series of solid solutions. The ternary range of the pseudocubic q MoCl-, is very restricted. Dimolyb-denum carbide dissolves up to 44 mol pct Nb2C (2240°C), whereas the maximum solid solubility of MO2C in Nb2C does not exceed 5 mol pct. The order-disorder transformation temperatures in Mo2C and Nb2C are lowered by the mutual metal exchanges. Six invariant (p = const) reactzons occur in the ternary system; three correspond to class 11-type four-phase reactions involving a liquid phase, one to a class I (eutectoid)-type, and two further isotherms are associated with limiting tie lines. The results of the Phase diagram investigation are discussed, and the thermodynamic interpretation identifies the low relative stability of the binary sub-carbides in conjunction with the large stability diflerences between niobium and molybdenum carbides as the cause for the formation of a stable equilibrium between the monocarbide and the metal phase in the ternary reson. Due to their refractoriness, the carbides of the high-melting transition metals have received increased interest in recent years as base materials in composite structures for aerospace applications at high temperatures and for the development of self-bonded cutting tool materials; other novel fields of application include power reactors, where operation at high temperatures becomes essential for attaining high power efficiencies. In these applications, the increased reaction rates at high temperatures require a close consideration of the chemical interactions between the alloy constituents. As a consequence, a detailed knowledge of the phase relationships in the alloy systems is required in order to provide a sound basis for developmental -type work. Partly as a result of the considerable experimental difficulties associated with the investigation of this high-melting alloy class, no complete studies of ternary metal-carbon systems have been performed until recently. Even the high-temperature phase relationships in the binary transition metal-carbon systems have been delineated only during the past few years to a degree of accuracy required for a more detailed study of ternary or higher-order alloys. In recent investigations of binary and ternary systems of refractory transition metals with carbon, boron, and silicon,&apos; alloys from the ternary systems Nb-Mo-C became of interest because of the demonstrated possibility2,3 of obtaining compatible composites based on metal + monocarbide combinations. In the meantime, however, studies in other, but related, ternary metal-carbon systems, such as Ta-W-C, have shown that the solid-state equilibria may change significantly toward higher temperatures (>2000°C), and that extrapolations based on low-temperature equilibrium data are, in general, not very reliable. Although the lower-temperature (<2000°C) phase relationships in the Nb-Mo-C system are similar to those found in Ta-W-C, a cursory thermodynamic analysis of the equilibria indicated4 that complete solid-solution formation between Mo2C and Nb2C should not occur at higher temperatures. The present work was conducted in order to experimentally verify these expectations and, in addition, to provide phase equilibrium data in the melting range of the alloys. In the boundary systems, niobium and molybdenum are known to form a continuous series of solid solutions.576 The continuous solubility was also confirmed by Kornilov and Polyakova,7,8 who also observed a minimum melting point at 22 at. pct Mo and 2345°C. The phase diagram investigations of the Nb-C system by Storms and Krikorian9 and Kimura and Sasaki10 were recently supplemented by Rudy et al.11,12 The system contains a high-melting monocarbide with the B1 structure, Table I, and a subcarbide, Nb2C, which exists in at least two different states of sublattice order at low temperatures47"-&apos;3 and a disordered state above approximately 2500°C.11,12 The melting-point measurements by Rudy et al .11,14 are in close confirmation of the data by Kimura and Sasaki.10 The rather complex phase relationships in the Mo-C system were only recently Clarified.15,18 The system is characterized by three congruently melting, intermediate phases, MozC, ? MoC1-x and a Mol-,, Table I, of which only Mo2C is stable at temperatures below 1650°C. Substoichiometric MozC exists in several states of sublattice order which interconvert in homogeneous phase transitions. Hyperstoichiometric compositions cannot exist in the ordered state. A model of the slag-fuming process for recovery of zinc oxide fume from lead blast furnace slags, adapted to solution by a digital computer, is presented. The model incorporates the variaticm with time of the following: the fuming of zinc and lead, the change in the ferrous-ferric ratio in the slag, the transfer of sulfur to and from the slag, the temperature of the liquid slag, the temperature of the gases and fume which exit to the flue, the heat losses to the water jackets, and the amount of frozen slag on the water jackets. The assumptions which underlie the model-some of which are but crude approximations—are discussed. Despite some obvious shortcomings, the model simulates faithfully many of the important features of practical slag-fuming operations. The behavior of the model is compared with the operation of the American Smelting and Refining Co. fumzace at El Paso, Tex. The model is used to predict the effects on performance of changes in the coal rate, the temperature of the secondary air, and the composition of the coal. THE fuming of lead blast furnace slag for recovery of zinc oxide is standard practice today, and it has been the subject of several previous attempts at mathematical process analysis.&apos;-&apos; The mathematical process model described in this paper incorporates many of the features from the earlier studies, but it is a far more complete and realistic representation of the commercial process in that the following additional features have been included: the fuming of lead as well as zinc; the transfer of sulfur between slag and gas; the addition of slag feed in batches, over a period of time; tapping of the final slag over a period of time; the change of slag temperature with time. The additional features of the present model add greatly to the mathematical complexity, but this difficulty has been obviated by programming the model for solution by a digital computer. The IBM 7094 computer solves the model for one operating cycle of the fuming furnace in less than 1 min. It is doubtful if the same calculations could be completed with the aid of a desk calculator in less than a month. The computer program, written in the Fortran IV language, is too lengthy for presentation here.* Instead, this paper As shown in the sections which follow, it does simulate with remarkable faithfulness most of the known behavior of the industrial process. On the other hand, the model contains several gross simplifications of both the chemistry and heat balance, necessitated by the lack of more exact knowledge. In addition to these known weaknesses, it is not unlikely that those more intimately acquainted with industrial practice than the author will find other additions to or modifications of the model which will improve its utility and reliability. CHEMISTRY In brief outline, the present model treats the fuming furnace as two units, A and B, in series. In A the batch of slag reacts with the continuous stream of air (primary and secondary) and fuel injected at the tuyeres, to produce a stream of hot, reduced gases containing zinc vapor. The zinc content of both the slag and the product gas changes with time because of the batch nature of the process. Unit A is called the "lower furnace" in this paper; physically, it is considered to be that part of the fuming furnace which lies below the charge port. In B, the "upper furnace", the product gas from A is burned with the stream of "tertiary" air, to produce zinc oxide fume. The performance of B also depends on time because of the time dependence inherited from the product gas of A. The rate behavior in the lower furnace determines the important features of the process—the rate of elimination of zinc and lead from the slag, and the amount of fuel required for this purpose. Bell, Turner, and peters&apos; published the first useful model of the lower furnace. They employed the assumption that, at any instant of time, the slag and reduced gas reach a state of equilibrium, according to the reactions: They cited only indirect evidence in support of their assumption of slag-gas equilibrium, yet several more recent laboratory studies of the activity of zinc oxide in slags4-8 have produced evidence which supports their view. On first acquaintance it seems unlikely that a high-output "rate" process like slag fuming would even approach an equilibrium state. The author, in an earlier study,&apos; established, however, that the gas-slag interface in a fuming furnace was capable of such high mass-transfer rates that a close approach to equilibrium between gas and slag was quite probable. In devising the present model it was decided to assume a state of equilibrium between slag and gas at the outset, and then to modify this assumption as necessary in order to make the model agree with the be -havior of the actual process. The East Tintic district in central Utah has produced ores of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc valued at more than $120,000,000. All of this ore has been produced from blind ore bodies in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that are concealed beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks and cut by intrusive bodies of Eocene age. The Paleozoic rocks, which range in age from Early Cambrian to Mississippian form the core and limbs of a large, northtrending asymmetric anticline that is cut by low-angle thrust faults, high-angle transcurrent faults, mineralized fissures and faults, and normal faults that are both older and younger than the mineralized fissures. The ore bodies generally may be grouped into two classes: ( 1) massive replacement bodies that are rich in silver, lead, zinc and manganese and (2) fissure veins that are valuable primarily for their content of gold, copper, and silver. The replacement ore bodies are localized chiefly in the Middle Limestone Member of the Ophir Formation of Middle Cambrian age where it has been thrust-faulted against older or younger rocks and cut by northeast-trending mineralized fissure zones. The fissure veins primarily are productive only in the Lower Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Extensive lowgrade deposits of lead-zinc-silver ore recently have been discovered in Devonian carbonate rocks in the Lower plate of the East Tintic thrust fault but as yet are unevaluated. The principal guides to ore include: ( 1) intersections of northeast-trending fissures and crossbreaking faults that brecciate the carbonate rocks; (2) zones of late-stage pyritic, calcitic, and sericitic alteration in the lavas; ( 3) primary geochemical anomalies in the altered rocks; and ( 4) mineral zoning patterns of the known ore bodies. The present development of the Burgin mine would seem to assure the continued productivity of the district for at least a decade.

Bingham Canyon lies in the heart of the Oquirrh Mountains, 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. In it is located the world&apos;s largest open-pit copper mine, owned and operated by the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation. From the beginning of open pit mining operations in 1906 until 1963, the pit haulage, or materials transportation, was primarily by rail. In 1963, phase-in of a truck haulage system in the upper two-thirds of the pit was begun. The details of that conversion, its associated problems and the resulting pit operation have been covered in an earlier paper.1 The purpose of this paper is to discuss various factors for consideration in transportation system selection, and to discuss some of the alternatives considered prior to making the change from rail haulage to truck haulage for a portion of Bingham Canyon.

A knowledge of rock characteristics forms the foundation for the application of rock mechanics to engineering works. Hence, there has been an increased interest in the determination and proper utilization of rock properties data. Most numerical values quoted for rock properties are obtained from arbitrary tests and are not necessarily indicative of any intrinsic rock characteristics. Recent attempts to correlate these properties by statistical methods have attracted considerable attention, in the hope that these might give some clue to the fundamental properties. To date, correlation and regression techniques have been employed for this purpose. The use of statistics has also been deemed appropriate because of inhomogeneity and anisotropy in rocks. The problems have been further compounded by the lack of standardized methods of measuring rock properties. The various ASTM committees are still deliberating on these matters, but recommendations should be forthcoming in the near future. As more reliable data become available, the ability of geoscientists to find more meaningful relationships between rock properties will be greatly enhanced. The objective of this paper is to outline another statistical technique which might be useful in providing an insight into the relationships that exist between rock properties. This method does not attempt to predict rock characteristics, but rather compares the similarity or dissimilarity between properties. This enables rock properties to be classified into groups with similar intrinsic characteristics. The technique described is one form of factor analysis. It allows the results obtained to be depicted geometrically, so as to make ready visual examination possible.

This report on the Central mining district of New Mexico is the partial culmination of an intensive U.S. Geological Survey effort dating back some 30 years. Robert M. Hernon went to Silver City in 1948 to finish a detailed restudy of the district that had been started in the thirties by Samuel G. Lasky. He was joined by William R. Jones in 1951, and Jones took over as project chief when Hernon resigned to do consulting work in 1953; it was under Jones' guidance that most of the work was brought to completion or nearly so ( 17, 22-24, 26-30). Hernon returned to the Survey in 1958 to work in .the southern Appalachians. Early in 1965 Jones urged that Hernon be reassigned to the Silver City project to help complete the Professional Paper report on the ore deposits of the Santa Rita quadrangle as well as to take over preparation of the report on the Central district for the Graton-Sales volume. This reassignment was approved, and Hernon began work on the present report. By late June he had completed most of it in draft form, and on June 28 Jones and Hernon left Denver for a short trip to Silver City to fill in a few gaps and to reacquaint Hernon with activities in the district, which he had not visited for 12 years. Late in the afternoon of June 29, 1965, as Bob and Bill were 85 miles short of their destination, their jeep collided head-on with a truck that was attempting to pass another vehicle in a cloud of dust. They both died instantly. As the most recent surviving member of the Silver City project (1958-1962), I was given the honorable though rather sorrowful task of putting the Hernon-Jones report "in shape" for publication. Fortunately the manuscript was already in good shape, so that the task has consisted of little more than minor reorganization and editing, and of preparation of the illustrations, abstract, and bibliography. The sections on wall-rock alteration had been left for Jones to complete in the light of his recently intensified interest in alteration geochemistry (25), and it is in these sections only that. the report may fall short, for they have been filled in from a 1958 manuscript by Jones on the ore deposits of the Santa Rita quadrangle that he intended to revise considerably. The shortcomings, however, are largely in the interpretation, not in the field data. As a brief but accurate summary of what was known about the geology of the Central mining district in 1965, this report stands as a fitting testimonial to the scientific dedication of two exceptional men.

The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99&#183; 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

Equilibrium ratios C02/C0 of a gas phase coexisting with selected phase assemblages of the system Fe-Mn-0 have been determined in the temperature range 1000" to 1300°C. The oxygen pressure for the "hfnO" +hfn30, equilibrium and for the "(Fe,hTn)O" + (Fe,Mnh 0* equilibrium at high manganese contents has been determined by electromotive force measurements using stabilized zirconia as a solid electrolyte. The notstoichometry 01&apos; "hTnO" and of "(Fe, iM1z)O" solid solutions has been determined by ther-mog-/avi?netry and by wet-chemical analysis. The data obtained are used to derive activity-composition relations in "(Fe,hfn)O" and (Fe,Mn),O4 solid solutions. WUSTITE "FeO" and manganosite "MnO" form a continuous series of solid solution at high temperatures,&apos; and so do magnetite Fe304 and the high-temperature, cubic modification of Mn304 (Ref. 2) (high hausmannite, -1170). The oxides "FeO" and "MnO" are cation-deficient phases.495 The nonstoi-chiometry of "(Fe,Mn)O" solid solutions has been studied by Engell and ~ohl&apos; at two selected C02/C0 ratios at 1250°C. The two oxide end members of the spinel solid solution, FesO4 and Mn,04, however, are known to be close to stoichiometric under the experimental conditions used in the present investigation.&apos;&apos;&apos; The oxygen pressures of "(Fe,Mn)07&apos; solid solutions in equilibrium with iron have been determined by Schenck and coworkers,8 by Foster and welch," and by ~n~e1l.l&apos; The two former groups equilibrated the condensed phases in C02-CO atmospheres of lmown compositions, whereas Engell" used a galvanic cell with stabilized zirconia as a solid electrolyte. The results of these investigators are not in good agreement. Activities of FeO in manganowiistite as calculated from the results of Foster and Welch show ideal behavior, those of Engell yield a pronounced positive deviation, and those of Schenck et 01. show a moderate positive deviation from ideality. In the present work oxygen pressures for the iron + manganowiistite and manganowustite + spinel equilibria and the nonstoichiometry of manganowiistites have been measured. The data were used to calculate activities in the manganowiistite and spinel solid solutions. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The COz/CO ratios at which manganowustite and iron are in equilibrium were determined by thermo-gravimetric and quenching methods. Experimental details are described in a previous publication.&apos;2 In the thermogravimetric technique, incipient reduction of manganowiistite pellets to metallic iron was observed as a break in the weight vs log COZ/CO curve. In the quenching technique, manganowiistite samples were partially reduced to metallic iron, or the metallic iron of manganowustite + metallic iron mixtures was partially oxidized to manganowustite, in atmospheres of constant C02/CO ratios. After quenching the composition of the oxide phase was determined by X-ray lattice parameter measurements and comparison with a standard curve obtained from oxide solid solutions of known compositions. The nonstoichiometry of "MnO" and "(Fe,Mn)07&apos; solid solutions was determined by chemical analysis of samples equilibrated in C02-CO atmospheres and quenched to room temperature, as well as thermo-gravimetrically by reducing (Fe,Mn),04 or Mn304 to manganowiistite or manganosite. The equilibrium between manganowiistite and (Fe,Mn),04 was measured thermogravimetrically by reducing (Fe,Mn),04 solid solutions having composition in the range of %„ l(NFe +NM) from 0 to 0.63. No experiments could be performed with this technique at higher manganese contents, because the equilibrium C02/C0 ratios are too large for accurate control. An additional difficulty arises at the higher manganese contents due to the strong increase in oxygen content of the manganowustite phase with increasing log Py near the manganowiistite-spinel boundary. Consequently a sharp break in the weight loss vs log C02/CO curve cannot be observed at the phase boundary. At high manganese contents of the manganowiistite, e.g., (NMn/(NF~ + NMn) > 0.9, electromotive force measurements with stabilized zirconia as a solid electrolyte were made to determine the equilibrium oxygen partial pressure. Experimental details are described in a previous paper.* Mixtures of "(Fe,Mn)O" and (Fe,Mn),04 were pressed to pellets, and the oxygen pressure of the equilibrated samples was compared to that of Ni + NiO mixtures in the cell The composition of the manganowiistite in the equilibrated two-phase mixture was determined by lattice parameter measurements and comparison with known standards. The oxygen pressure for the Ni + NiO equilibrium was taken from available data.l3~l4 No reliable results were obtained with the electromotive force technique on iron-rich oxides. This report describes two goniometers that, by simple manipulation, can be used to ascertain the attitude of a joint, vein, or fracture plane observed on the planar projection of a borehole photograph taken with an NX borehole camera of the type developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. One goniometer was designed to interpret photographs taken in vertical drill holes and the other for photographs taken in inclined drill holes. In practice, several measurements are made on each photograph with the goniometer. These data are then substituted into mathematical equations, which are derived in this report and the attitudes of fracture planes are determined.

Electrical-resistivity )measurments were made be-trueetz room temperatrive and 1.5 oK on five different stocks of cerium metal, and the results were correlated with the types, amounts, and distribution of the impurities present. Magnesium, which appeared to be distributed as a solute throughout the cerium matrix, was found to have a large effect on the residual resistivity, 1 at. pct Mg being sufficient to increase the residual resistivity by about 10 microhm-cm. The formation of ß by repeated thermal cycling between room temperature and liquid-helium temperature is attributed to the deformation and faulting that occurs during the ? D a transformation. In preparation for starting a proposed study of cerium-rich alloys, we examined samples from severa1 stocks of cerium metal in order to choose the purest stock for future use in making the alloys. Low-temperature electrical-resistivity data were used to gain initial information about the purities of the stocks. Additional information was subsequently obtained from chemical analyses, density measurements, optical metallography, and electron-micro-probe analyses. Cerium that has been annealed at high temperature and cooled to room temperature has the fee crystal structure (? phase) with a = 5.16Å. When cooled further, in the region between about 250" and 150°K, some of the fee phase transforms to the double hcp form (ß phase) with a = 3.68 and c = 11.92Å. The remainder of the room-temperature fee form (and perhaps some of the hexagonal phase) transforms electronically in the vicinity of 100° K to the more dense or "collapsed" fee form (a phase), a - 4.85A, by transferring about 0.5 electron per atom from the 4f level to the valence band. Very little work related specifically to the effects of impurities on the physical properties of cerium has been reported in the literature. Gaume-Mahn1, 2 has studied the effects of calcium, magnesium. iron, silicon, and tantalum on the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of cerium between 60o and 300°K. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald3 have discussed the effects of total impurity content on the hysteresis of the a —? (reversible) transformation and on the formation of the 4 and "a-? intermediate" phases. Smith and Morrice* have reported the effect of total impurity content on the resistivity of cerium at 4 and 293°K. In none of these reports, however, is it apparent that the distributions of the impurities were determined, L.r., whether the impurities were present in inclusions or in solid solution in the matrix is not mentioned; nor does it appear that the phase purity of the cerium was always considered. In the present study, five different stocks of cerium were involved. One was represented by a single sample of electrowon cerium, which was all that had remained from a stock of high-purity material obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Reno, Nev., in 1959. The other four stocks were recently purchased from commercial sources and were specified to be 99.9 wt pct pure. EXPERIMENTAL Cerium stocks designated as #1, #2, #4, and #5 were obtained from commercial suppliers for the specific purpose of finding a reliable source of high-purity cerium. Although the purity level of the cerium was specified to be 99.9 pet, the specifications did not include limits as to the amounts of various impurities that would be acceptable. Consequently the chemical analyses of the different stocks varied widely. Stock #3, which had been obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and which was the purest on the basis of chemical analyses, consisted of a single specimen of electrowon cerium. Two methods were devised and evaluated for quantitatively measuring the amount of oleic acid on flotation products and in flotation waters. One method involved use of an organic solvent to remove carbon-l4-tagged oleic acid from mineral surfaces and flotation water phases with subsequent radio-metric analysis of the extracts. Studies showed this method to be slow and subject to large variations in accuracy and reproducibility. In the second procedure, tagged oleic acid was measured directly on the surfaces of dried mineral products. Oleic acid in the water phase was determined by adsorbing it on fine mineral, drying, and radiometric counting. Quantitative analysis of oleic acid on flotation products from bench-scale flotation tests with synthetic mixtures of ore minerals and quartz and with natural ores showed this method to be fast, accurate, and reproducible.

The Bureau of Mines has constructed a special compression chamber for developing stress-strain relationships of mine backfill and simulating the high compressive ground pressures encountered in underground mines. A one-dimensional, or Earth-Pressure-at-Rest model is proposed for backfills subjected to these pressures. Results of the compression tests performed in the chamber indicate that reliable stress-strain relationships can be developed from these tests. The primary objective of the test series was to evaluate the effectiveness of compaction of common backfills in retarding ground closure. Analysis of the stress-strain data shows an eightfold reduction in relative strain in optimum well-graded, compacted backfills over poorly graded, loose backfill material. Analysis of the one-dimensional compression test data also indicates a significant retardation of transmitted stress in dense compacted samples of backfill and natural sands. Although not fully understood, a deformation mechanism is thought to occur at the intergranular contacts in cyclic fashion causing frictional heat loss and a reduction in transmitted stresses in the densely packed materials. The experimental values of transmitted stress are compared with theoretical values of effective stress calculated from the one-dimensional compression relationships developed by Hendron (4).3 These experimental values of transmitted stress compare very closely with the theoretical values of effective stress.

The principal purpose of this study was the development of an engineering and economic model of a hypothetical large-scale open pit gold mining operation. The guiding concept in developing the model was the idea that, through study of a number of such models, it would be possible to evaluate a mineral property and to make reasonable estimates of the benefits to be derived from research in mining and metallurgy. The model by use of a computer is able to produce results easily and quickly when cost factors are varied. Cost factors may be varied as a result of assumptions of improved technology or of assumptions of assuming different approaches or methods to accomplish a particular segment of the mining or processing operation. The discounted cash flow rate of return was used to measure the effect of changes in costs or expected revenue. In this study, assumptions based on past processing practices were made in an effort to reduce costs of processing the ore These assumptions were: (1) Eliminating the low-grade cyanide circuit; (2) reducing the quantity of material to be processed by screening after crushing; and (3) using a combination of assumptions (1) and (2). All three assumptions resulted in reduced capital investment and operating cost that caused substantial increases in the rate of return.

3.2-1. Introduction. Much has appeared in the technical literature on theory of sampling (18, 37), weight of sample required in relation to particle size (28), probability of error in sampling (3), and statistical analysis of sample data (20). Each industry, whether it be copper, iron ore, or coal, has its own standards and methods. All of the rather extensive theoretical treatments appearing in published literature on sampling apply to material already on hand such as coal, iron ore, or copper concentrates in rail cars, or in moving streams such as on conveyor belts. The attempt usually is to apply statistical techniques in order to improve reliability and precision in sampling, and to reduce differences between the analyses of seller and buyer. In contrast to this type of sampling, very little has appeared in the literature on sampling a virgin deposit from the metallurgical point of view. Perhaps it would he more descriptive to designate this point of view as "Gm-metallurgical," since geology is inextricably interwoven with metallurgy in gaining an understanding of the complexities of a deposit, eventually leading to a definition of mineable reserves, with the development of a flowsheet and engineering criteria for the planning of a successful and profitable operation. The degree of cooperation between these two departments often determines whether the processing plant is a success at the inception of operations, or whether expensive changes and modifications must he made, with the plant finally reaching rated capacity at some later date. The first concern of the metallurgical department should be to establish proper accreditation of the samples which will be used in any ore-testing campaign. It should he made mandatory, as part of operating management policy, for the responsible metallurgist to he aware of the significance of the samples and to become intimately knowledgeable in all aspects of metallurgical behavior and response to treatment of all varieties of ore in the deposit under consideration.

"A method and device are described for sampling diamond-drill core by cutting a continuous fillet of constant cross section from the cylindrical surface of the core throughout appropriate sample lengths. The apparatus employs a tapered, abrasive-set, cutting wheel, the conical cutting surface of which projects slightly into a rectangular core-guiding trough set parallel to the axis of rotation. The depth of fillet and thus the amount of sample per unit length can be regulated by adjusting the core guides. The freshly cut fillet itself, by engaging in a guide beyond the cutting wheel, acts to prevent rotation of the core during operation of the device.The cuttings which form the sample are normally collected in a tray below the cutting-wheel and appear at about 80 per cent -100 mesh. They require little or no further treatment or comminution before analysis. Speed, economy and convenience of sampling are thus greatly increased as compared with conventional sampling by im-1>act breaking or sawing, followed by crushing, grinding and sub division for assayAssays from fillets (about 1/20 the cross-sectional area of the core) and from 180-degree segments, from the same ninety-three core-samples, representing 431 feet of nickel-copper mineralization, gave the following results:"

The format has been selected and arranged to provide a condensed guide for safety personnel, inspection and investigative agencies, design and project engineers, and others responsible for the health and safety of workmen. All the precautionary measures recommended are based on actual conditions observed, from investigations of fatal or serious accidents, and from research conducted to find ways and means of alleviating hazards and unhealthful conditions. Many of the recommended rules are included in State laws and in the general safety requirements of the construction industry. Explanatory, descriptive, and qualifying information has been largely omitted in this publication to keep basic data in more useful and compact form. Included in the appendixes are special precautions for gassy (methane atmospheres) tunnels and tunnels where petroleum products are encountered.

The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid test method for predicting the stability of motor gasoline during long-term storage. The amounts of gum and inorganic residue formed in 13 gasolines during a l6-hour oven test at 200° F were compared with the amounts formed in the same gasolines stored at 110° F, and analyzed following 8-, 16-, 32-, 44-, and 52-week storage periods. Satisfactory methods were developed for predicting gum and inorganic residue formation during fuel storage periods as long as 32 weeks at 110° F, the approximate equivalent of 5.7 years at 80° F. The only data required to apply the methods are the amount of gum and inorganic residue formed, and the amount of oxygen that reacted, during a l6-hour oven test. A direct relationship existed between inorganic residue formed during the oven test and during 110° F storage. Statistical treatment of the data showed predicted values were as reliable as determined values. By use of a modified Arrhenius equation, the 110° F storage time can be extrapolated to equivalent time at any temperature below 110° F. Thus by combining the stability prediction method with the mathematical extrapolation, the storage performance of motor gasoline for extended periods can be estimated at any temperature up to 110° F.

The migration of hydrogen and of deuterium dissolved in a iron and in nickel induced by an applied electrical potential has been measured over a range of temperature. In all cases the intevstitial solute migrates to the cathode. The deduced charges of transport are positive, independent of or slightly dependent on temperature, and markedly larger for the beavier mass. These results are interpreted as showing predominating momenlum transfer between electron holes and the acticated complex of the elementary diffusion act. THE migration of components of a metallic system under the action of an applied electrical potential is called electromigration or electratransport. This phenomenon has been known since 1861 and is becoming of increasing interest to metal scientists because of the opportunity it offers to explore the connections between mass transport and electron transport. Until recently, reliable data have been very scarce because of the difficulties inherent in the measurements. In addition, theoretical understanding has been either nonexistent or rudimentary and at present this situation is only moderately improved. Whereas the prevalent notion had been (and is still widely held) that electromigration directly reflects the state of ionization of a component in its equilibrium state in the metal, it is now becoming clear that the major, if not the sole, factor is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers, themselves in motion because of the applied field, and the metallic components in their activated state. It becomes important therefore to obtain reliable data over a range of temperature on electrornigration in systems where only one component moves, that is, either in pure metals (vacancy motion) or in interstitial solid solutions. Our choice of systems was dictated by our measurements&apos; of the Soret effect in solid solutions of hydrogen and deuterium in iron and nickel. Indeed, the main reason for making measurements on electromigration at all is that we suspected a mechanistic connection between thermal diffusion and electromigration. In our former paper&apos; we proposed that what is common to both phenomena is the momentum transfer between the charge carriers in the metal and the atom as it jumps from one equilibrium position to another. In Soret diffusion, however, there is in addition the dissipation of the energy of the jumping atom via pho-nons. We have since found that similar ideas for this interconnection have been developed by Fiks.2 In the present paper we will discuss in more detail our understanding of the mechanism of electromigration itself, but we turn first to a presentation of the experiments and results. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS Let us consider a metallic system in which only one component, m , can diffuse at the temperature in question, and to which are applied simultaneously an electrical potential gradient, grad cp, and a chemical potential gradient, grad p,. One may write3 for the material flux Jm and the electronic charge flux Je by applying the condition, grad = 0, to Eq. [I] and evaluating grad(um/T) for the isothermal case and for activity coefficient independent of composition over the relevant composition range. ere, c is the concentration and D the diffusivity of the mobile component. The experimental technique that we have used to measure Z* for the isotopes of hydrogen individually dissolved in each of two transition metals has been developed from a method used by Wagner and Heller.4 (A somewhat similar method was also used by Herold.5) A wire or thin rod of the metal under study connects two volumes of gaseous hydrogen at identical pressures; hence grad um = 0. A direct current is made to pass through the specimen, serving to maintain the specimen at the desired temperature and also to produce the electromigration of the hydrogen dissolved in the metal in equilibrium with the gaseous hydrogen. During fiscal year 1966 the Bureau of Mines published 99 scientific and technical papers and engaged in 67 research projects on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. A basic appropriation of $3.4 million was supplemented by $1 million in cooperative funds from other Governmental agencies and industry groups. Petroleum conservation was advanced by development of scientific knowledge and improvement of technologic methods in both the extraction and utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. Experimental work was carried out at research centers in Bartlesville, Okla., and Laramie, Wo., and in laboratories in Morgantown, W. Va., and San Francisco, Calif. ACHIEVEMENTS IN FISCAL YEAR 1966 Bureau of Mines--Petroleum Research in fiscal year 1966 (July 1, 1965- June 30, 1966) was involved in many public issues--air pollution, peaceful uses of nuclear explosives, utilization of oil-shale resources, computerization of recovery-stimulation techniques, and fuels for supersonic airplanes. Scientific contributions included compositional studies of petroleum and oil shale, determination of thermodynamic properties of petroleum compounds, development of analytical techniques, and correlations of petroleum properties with geologic occurrence. Technologic advances included rock-fracturing research, in situ combustion studies, waterflood techniques, use of radio-tracers to study stability of petroleum fuels, and hydrogenation as a tool to prepare shale-oil products.
