From the perspective of management control, most mining operations can be represented by a hierarchy comprising four layers. The base of this hierarchy consists of the individual pieces of equipment that are used to break and transport rock. The next level comprises the coordinated interaction between different pieces of equipment, termed a process. An operation results from the bringing together of different processes within a common discipline, such as mining or hydrometallurgy. Finally, an enterprise is formed when the separate mining, concentrating and smelting business units are combined. To date, much of the literature written on the topic of mining automation has focused on the equipment level, specifically on removing the operator from production mining equipment. This focus should not, however, overshadow advances registered in automation at both the process and enterprise levels. Only at the operations level of the hierarchy has little progress been made. While automated equipment, process management and enterprise resource planning are a current reality; it is argued that the benefits from automation have, to date, been largely elusive. It is further argued that full benefits of automating other levels will only be fully achieved when this ‘gap’ in the mining automation hierarchy has been addressed and an uninterrupted, process-wide information flow across the entire operation is achieved. Furthermore, it will be reasoned that so-called vertical integration can only be achieved with an automated operational level in place. It is believed that all the necessary building blocks are in place and that the industry is ready for this development. The paper concludes by presenting a vision for what operational level automation would achieve.

Automation technologies are increasingly adopted in different mines worldwide. This paper presents the technical aspects of vehicle automation applications at two Noranda operating mines. Teleoperation of 5 LHD’s at Noranda’s Bell Allard mine is used in order to meet aggressive mining requirements under difficult conditions. The equipment is performing under high demand for reliability and performance. In order to further increase performance, automated loading has been commissioned on one of the LHD’s and is being tested. Results to date indicate improved performance with respect to an operator through better filling of the bucket, fewer passes at the muck pile and shorter cycles. Noranda’s Brunswick mine is currently commissioning an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two ore passes. Expected operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. Monitoring to date indicates that the trucks can operate reliably under the conditions imposed by mine production.

The SILAG Material Tracking System MTS monitors and controls the complete material flow throughout the plant - and even companywide. The customized system developed by Siemens especially for bulk material handling applications enables companies to track bulk material from the mine to the harbor, to the steel mill or to the power plant. All relevant material data is available at every single step of the material’s journey. SILAG is an open, scalable system based on Windows NT / 2000. Using standard interfaces of Windows NT, like API, ODBC, SQL and socket technology, the system is very flexible and can easily be tailored to meet different requirements. SILAG can be used as a stand-alone solution or - if complete plant control and visualization is required - as a component of a fully integrated automation system with the Win CC HMI system and the PCS7 process control. In contrast to conventional material tracking systems, SILAG offers many advantages. - The Material Tracking System is an object oriented, online to the process, linked system. All changes in the plant during operation e.g. selecting another conveyor route, start and stop etc. will be automatically detected and will influence the calculation. - The systems is able to split and blend material (quantity and quality).Measurements of tonnage, volume or quality analysis can be linked online to the system. Each movement of material is monitored by the system and leads to online recalculations of the images and databases. - All material data is based on 3D-stockpile images, which are calculated by an internal mathematical model based on quantity and quality information. - If a laser scanner is available on a stockyard machine it can be taken to update the profile directly from the piles. - Efficient control and report functions are available on each, free selectable point of the total plant.

Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. Mining layout See Figure 1 and Figure 2 for a detailed description. Drill rig The drill rig was a combination of a Secoma P-Low LC 10long hole feed and an Axera low profile carrier. The choice of this equipment was made through consultation with Tamrock Sandvik. All relevant design perimeters of the area to be mined were taken into consideration. Production targets

Noranda has been involved in the development of technologies for automated mining vehicles since 1988, and has contributed in transferring the technological foundation for the suite of SIAM products now being commercialized by STAS. Some of these technologies are now mature and available for commercial implementation in operations where a strong business case can be made for the use of automation. Noranda has successfully implemented or is commissioning the Tele-remote, Auto-loading and truck Guidance technologies at two of its operations, based on operating needs and economic justifications. Operator acceptance, training and maintenance issues have been addressed in order to ensure the reliability and availability of the automation components. These represent the most significant challenges encountered and addressed during the implementation period.

Increasing depths and mechanization of underground mines have led to the production of large amounts of gaseous and particulate contaminants. Over 100 000 lives have been lost due to methane gas and dust explosions in coal mine workings in both the United States and Canada since 1900. There is, therefore, the need to constantly assess and evaluate the performance of existing mine ventilation systems to maintain safe and acceptable mine environmental conditions. This paper advances research initiatives in the control of methane gas in underground mine environments. It uses the results of continuous monitoring of methane gas concentrations conducted in selected coal mines in North America to assess the effectiveness of existing auxiliary ventilation systems to control methane gas concentrations. The results show that the average quantities of fresh air required to dilute, disperse and remove methane gas concentrations within set levels of one minute varied from 5.43 m3/sec. to 27.97 m3/sec. in the development headings. The average dilution times in the headings studied were less than eight minutes. The calculated dilution efficiencies of the auxiliary ventilation systems in the headings varied from 12% to 139%. These efficiencies ranged from poor to excellent. This implies that the auxiliary ventilation systems were capable of controlling the methane gas concentrations below statutory levels but may not be able to cope with large and unusual methane gas concentrations in the headings. This study is significant in the control of methane gas and coal dust explosions in coal mines.

Koffiefontein Mine commissioned a distributed antenna system as an underground communication backbone for the DISPATCH® production management system during September1999. STAS Ltd, the supplier of the Distributed Antenna System developed the System for an Integrated and Automated Mine (SIAM). This communication system, in conjunction with DISPATCH®, fulfils Koffiefontein Mine’s present and future requirements for accurate draw control, increasing productivity and improving working conditions. The DAS as SIAMnet communication network was selected by the mine, because of its superior data transmission rate of up to 1.5Mbps at 860MHz, video and Ethernet transmission facilities, and future enhancement abilities. The results of the commissioning tests confirmed the quality and integrity of the data and voice communication. The initial installation enabled 9000 metres of underground production tunnels with voice communication inclusive of 3700 metres having data communication. This article discusses the requirements and selection of the telecommunication system for an underground mine. A description of the installed distributed antenna system follows with a summary of the commissioning tests. A discussion of the reliability of the components is followed by conclusions with suitable recommendations. Keywords: distributed antenna system, underground mining, telecommunication system.

Introduction There is a continual economic push to increase the productivity of mobile material handling equipment used in open pit mines. This includes the largest electrical machines: excavators (draglines and shovels) and haul trucks (Figure 1). Existing DC drive systems used on this type of equipment are a mature technology. They have no further economic potential to accommodate larger equipment be-cause of the high maintenance costs and the trade-off between power, speed and space limitations of their DC traction mo-tors. In recent years the large-scale introduction of AC drives in the rail transportation sector1,and the availability of poworful GTO and IGBT modules have led to the devolopment of compact, powerful, an drugged AC inverter drives specifically adapted to the mining market2,3. The major advantage of AC drives stems from the squirrel cage induction motor which eliminates the DC commutator. This leads directly to higher speed, increased power density, higher reliability, greater efficiency and lower maintenance of the traction motors. In the context of excavators and haul trucks, additional benofits driving the move to AC are (i) increased production rate due to higher machine speed, and power density, (ii) increased reliability and lower cost inverters using 3.3 kV IGBT's, (iii) active front-end (AFE) technology that improves compatibility with the mine power grid and an proved dynamic response,(iv) intelligent converter design that provides increased fault tolerance, (v) contextual maintenance software that facilitates trouble-shooting, and (vi) remote diagnostic capabilities. This paper describes how these and other features of AC drives lead to higher productivity in mining shovels, draglines, and haul trucks. Minimize the cost per ton of material moved The overall goal that drives design and sales of excavators and haul trucks is the constant requirement to reduce the cost per ton of material moved. Whether this involves blasting, loading trucks, or hauling material to the crusher or waste dump, equipment that reduces the cost per ton of material moved contributes to a more profitable operation. An accurate determination of the true cost per ton to move material must consider every aspect of the equipment and the circumstances under which it is used. Procurement and capital costs, fuel, operating, and maintenance costs over the useful life, and eventually the cost of scrapping should all be taken into account to determine the real cost per ton of moving material. We will focus on two broad areas that relate to the equipment itself; factors influencing the amount of material moved (Table I) and factors influencing the cost of material moved (Table II). Emphasis will be given to those elements in the tables that most influence the productivity of excavators and haul trucks due to the application of AC drive technology. Maximize the amount of material moved Maximize production rate he production rate refers to the quantity of material that can be loaded or moved per hour. This generally involves larger, faster, and more powerful equipment that operates more reliably to minimize down-time. AC motors Figure 2 compares the hoist motor speed-torque response of two 77 t (85 short ton) shovels, one AC the other DC. The absence of commutation limits on the AC motors enables the AC shovel to operate with a greater area under the speed-torque curve, resulting in faster lowering speeds and reduced times for the swing to return to the pit. This is especially important for short swing angles where the operator may have to wait for the dipper to lower. Reducing the cycle time by 6 to 8 seconds at the shovel translates into an increase in shovel production of about 20%. Threshold blasting involves the use of small amounts of high explosive to break and fragment hard rock without having to evacuate mining personnel. The method is easily assimilated and effective in rockbreaking, but requires rigid control on drilling, charging and timing. Current underground trials are aimed at fine-tuning the amount of explosive energy and blast hole geometry to allow the firing of multiple sets of shot holes in a continuous manner. Through correct procedures, the after-blast fumes, dust and fly rock can be contained so as to provide a safe working environment. Threshold blasting hugely reduces the volumes of explosives used in mining and brings to maturity the potential of the process begun by Alfred Nobel when he introduced nitroglycerine, and later dynamite, to mining. Its key contribution is its enabling of continuous mining operations with well understood and relatively low cost technologies. The use of batch blasting, employing large burdens holds the greatest potential for delivering high flow rates of ore at minimal cost. There is good potential for rapid evolution of the concept.

Since the early 1990s the underground mining industry has embarked on a vigorous program of improving process and eliminating costs. A leading development in this program has been the implementation of leaky feeder radio systems as an enabling infrastructure for future automation. El-Equip Inc. has led this development with more than 175 mines implementing mine-wide radio infrastructures for voice and data. In this paper, we describe the implementation of a digital radio network which supports existing installations through to an automation infrastructure employing full digital cellular communications with mobile video roaming capabilities. We outline the evolutionary path from existing low speed data communications links through to 155 Mbps and beyond.

Objective To develop a passive, inexpensive technique for monitoring explosion overpressures within sealed areas in underground coalmines. Background From 1994 to 2000, seven explosions of methane and/or coal dust occurred within the worked-out, sealed areas (gobs) of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to have been started by lightning, destroyed many seals and caused much damage external to the sealed area. One gob explosion went undetected until the mine operator reopened the sealed area and discovered the damage. Fortunately, these gob explosions did not cause any fatalities or injuries. Because lightning occurs in just about all mining areas, several questions arise. Could gob gas explosions be occurring in other sealed areas and going undetected? If so, what is the magnitude of the resulting explosion overpressures? The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a study to identify and evaluate passive measuring devices to monitor and quantify the overpressures associated with such explosions. This work was done in parallel with full-scale explosion experiments for evaluating the strength characteristics of seals used for isolating areas in underground coal mines. Approach Evaluation studies were done in PRL's 20-liter explosion test chamber and in the full-scale Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory to evaluate the response and accuracy of various commercially available automobile tire pressure gauges to overpressures generated from gas and dust explosions. The first series of tests was done in the 20-liter chamber, which is used to study the explosibility and inerting of fuel dusts and gases. Data from the tire pressure gauge tests were compared to the pressure-time data obtained from the 20-liter chamber 's traditional electronic strain gauge pressure transducer recorded on a high-speed data acquisition system. To evaluate the tire pressure gauges, the valved inlet (tip) of the candidate pressure gauge was removed and the body of the gauge was cemented with epoxy into a 0.25-in pipe elbow and attached to the outside of the test chamber. A second series of tire gauge evaluation tests was done at Lake Lynn during explosion-resistance testing of seals used in underground coal mines. Full-scale seals (20 ft wide by 8 ft high)were constructed as one wall of a 2,000-ft3 chamber and exposed to a series of methane explosions. Average overpressures ranged from20 to 80 psi. The seals were built with various strength materials ranging from 7 to 48 in thick. The modified tire gauges are attached on the outside of the chamber to a 0.25-in NPT pipe that extends into the chamber (figure 1). The axis of the gauge is mounted at a right angle to the plane of the seal to minimize the coupling of any seal movement to the stem of the gauge that may cause inaccurate readings. The internal explosion pressure history is recorded with a strain gauge pressure transducer mounted inside the chamber. Methane is injected into the chamber, mixed with air, and ignited with an electric spark located at the geometric center of the chamber. Maximum explosion overpressures are recorded and compared with the tire gauge pressure.

Objective To develop safety training tools for mine health and safety trainers that fill gaps in currently available materials and help capture the wisdom and knowledge of “expert miners.” Background NIOSH began a series of stakeholder meetings in 1998 to determine what research was needed to improve miner health and safety. One of the more common concerns among stakeholders was a critical lack of appropriate training materials applicable to metal/nonmetal mining. Participants provided many insights into what effective training materials should include and how materials could best reach both new and experienced miners. The most important factors were that any materials be realistic and interesting and that some way must be found to capture the wisdom of expert miners before they retired. Approach NIOSH researchers chose videos as the best means of achieving these training goals. Over the past 3 years, NIOSH has produced three training videos that present information on safe work practices in underground mines: handling explosives, recognizing roof hazards and using proper scaling techniques, and installing ground supports. The last two videos, “Rock Falls—Preventing Rock Fall Injuries in Underground Mines” and “Miner Mike Saves the Day—or—Ground Support…It’s Important,” have won Alice Hamilton awards, NIOSH’s highest recognition of Excellence in Occupational Safety and Health, in the Educational Materials category. Two new videos are now being released. Both of these videos were shot completely in operating underground hard-rock mines and used expert miners to tell the story. Hazards In Motion The first, “Hazards in Motion,” deals with the dangers of working around mobile equipment in an underground mine. Ben, a new trainee, refuses to pay attention in his 40-hour New Miner Training class, and when the class takes its first trip underground, he wanders off and finds himself in many dangerous situations. He encounters many experienced miners who both chew him out for his unsafe attitude and give him advice and information on how to survive around mobile equipment. Many common pieces of equipment are shown, including haulage trucks, LHD=s, tracks and trains, slushers, skips and hoists, and air doors. The dangers of ignoring signals and of horseplay are also included. After nearly losing his life numerous times, Ben learns his lesson with the help of the Safety Angel, an experienced miner who looks suspiciously like his safety trainer. Ben’s Safety Angel saves his life repeatedly, teaches him how to work safely around these common conveyances, and introduces him to experts who have specific safety tips. Ben learns the error of his ways and vows to be the safest miner in the mine. “Hazards in Motion” is approximately 30 minutes long. Hidden Scars The second video is the first in the NIOSH “Expert Miner” series. “Hidden Scars” is a narrative interview with Don Capparelli, a miner and supervisor at the Sunshine Mine in north Idaho. This video captures the story of a fatal rock burst in May 1994, when Don was seriously injured and his long-time partner, Jimmy Findley, was killed. “Hidden Scars” is a very powerful story. Don Capparelli shares the physical and emotional pain he lives with daily as he relates the events leading up to the rock burst that took the life of his best friend and partner. This video is an excellent reminder of the human cost of uncontrolled accidents and the hidden scars that survivors must deal with for the rest of their lives. It runs approximately 25 minutes.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health-Spokane Research Laboratory (NIOSH-SRL) have developed a Shaft Conveyance Monitoring System (SCMS). Assessment of current hoisting technology has shown that monitoring wire rope tension and conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety, production, and maintenance advantages. The SCMS consists of conveyance position and guide displacement sensors, a battery power supply and charging system, and a new sensor to measure hoist rope tension. This device provides a warning of the occurrence of ?slack rope? a particularly dangerous condition. A 2.4 GHz radio link transmits data to the hoistroom. A reduced scale hoisting test facility has been constructed to test these components prior to field trials. The advantages of monitoring wire rope tension and conveyance position and load directly from a skip or cage top will be discussed. Field tests are underway in full-size shafts to refine the concept and evaluate long-term reliability and maintenance requirements. Application of this technology may result in decreased maintenance costs as well as safer, more productive hoisting operations.

A Joint Venture between Hope Bay Gold Corporation and Miramar Mining Corporation recently acquired the Hope Bay project in Nunavut, which represents the first discovery of a major new Archean greenstone gold belt in Canada since the discovery of Hemlo in 1982 and the Yellowknife belt in 1938. Located some 685 km North of Yellowknife, the Hope Bay Belt is geologically comparable to the other major gold producing regions of Canada. The initial discovery of gold mineralization in 1992 led BHP to acquire virtually all of the Hope Bay belt. Over the subsequent 6 years, BHP expended C$85 million on exploration, including 180,000 meters of drilling, 2.3km of underground workings and a 27,000 tonne bulk sample, as well as extensive environmental and economic studies. Hope Bay Gold and Miramar acquired the Hope Bay property in December 1999 for a cost of C$27 million, considerably less than the C$85 million spent by BHP in exploring the property. They both hold 50% of the project, and share expenses equally. Hope Bay Gold is the manager of all exploration phases and Miramar will manage feasibility, construction and operations. The Hope Bay Joint Venture controls 1,117 sq. km., covering virtually the entire 80 km long Hope Bay and adjacent Elu greenstone belts. We believe that Hope Bay is one of the best-undeveloped gold projects in Canada. Work to date has defined a global resource in excess of three million ounces of gold in three principal deposits, each of which is open to extension along strike and to depth. A C$17 million work program for year 2000 focused on advancing a significant portion of the gold resource to a measured and indicated category. This will provide the basis for initiation of a feasibility study in 2001. The 2000 drill program was one of the largest undertaken in Canada last year, and is a clear indication of our confidence that Hope Bay will develop into a major gold producing district. The majority of the potential mineable areas known to date lie within 350m of surface and would be accessed through a combination of open pit and declines. Currently, development of a 1,800 to 2,000 tpd gold mine producing in excess of 300,000 ounces of gold per year at cash costs below $US200 per ounce is envisioned. In addition, the exploration potential on the 80 km gold belt at Hope Bay is clearly tremendous.

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. This paper presents a new mining concept for oil sands called ?hydraulic underground mining of oil sands? or HUMOS. While this mining method is still at the conceptual stage it has great promise to allow extraction of bitumen from areas that are currently uneconomical or technically infeasible using surface mining or steam assisted gravity drainage. HUMOS is founded on a combination of recently proven technologies such as directional drilling, water jet cutting of oil sands, slurry transportation, cold water extraction of bitumen, and thickened tailings. One key component in the mining concept is the caving of oil sands and the creation of an underground cavern. Scaled-down physical models will be designed and built to demonstrate water jet cutting, cave development, and insitu primary bitumen separation. These will be used as a 'proof of concept'. On-going research will establish and prioritize issues that need to be resolved, outline key areas where further research is needed, foster establishment of research teams to divide and conquer the important questions, and create framework for future coordinated research efforts.

Demand for both gem and industrial diamonds is very strong. Synthetic production supplies industrial uses, but synthetic gems remain inferior and expensive, so the large gem market is supplied by mining. Several major mines have been depleted, and the market is receptive to new sources of high quality gems. Canada's Precambrian terrane, extending across the Canadian Shield and under the Phanerozoic cover of the Plains and Hudson Bay, has excellent potential for diamonds, but exploration conditions are difficult due to recent glaciation. Early world exploration relying on recognition of diamond in alluvial sediments was adequate to launch pre-1900 production from India, Brazil, and Africa. Exploration success in Canada, as was the case in Russia and other more recently discovered sources, however, had to await large investments in effort supported by advanced science and technology. Canadian exploration in many ways is similar to that in other regions, relying on analysis of tectonics, indicator minerals, geophysical surveys, and multiple stages of drilling and sampling. Very different from other regions, however, is Canada's surficial environment, in which recent glaciation has caused fresh indicator minerals to be transported hundreds of km. Exploration accelerated in Canada after 1960, first in Ontario and the Arctic Islands, then in Saskatchewan in 1988, and most importantly after the Chuck Fipke - Stew Blusson discovery at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories, in 1991 that led to the billion-dollar BHP - Dia Met Ekati Mine that opened in 1998. In 2003, production from Ekati is expected to be supplemented by that from the similar and nearby Diavik Mine of Rio Tinto and Aber, currently under construction. These mines will bring Canadian output to over 10% of world supply, and will position Canada with Botswana and Russia as world leaders in production of high quality gem diamonds. There could be other mines as well, as sites across the Arctic and in the south from Alberta to Québec are being explored by an array of companies, including De Beers, other majors, and several juniors.

La Bolivie possède tout pour réussir. Son vaste territoire de plus d'un million de km2 et qui occupe une position stratégique au coeur du continent sud-américain recèle des ressources naturelles (forêts, minéraux, gaz naturel, etc) variées et abondantes. Elle a une frontière avec pas moins de 5 pays dont le géant que constitue le Brésil ainsi qu'avec l'Argentine, l'autre puissance régionale. Pourtant, malgré tous ces atouts, la Bolivie demeure l'un des pays les plus pauvres du continent. Ce paradoxe n'est nulle part mieux reflété que dans le secteur minier. Celui-ci fait face à une situation de crise en dépit d'une tradition minière de plus de quatre siècles et d'un potentiel géologique indiscutable ayant conduit à la découverte et à l'exploitation de fabuleux gisements d'argent et d'étain. Les habitants des districts miniers vivent dans des conditions de pauvreté extrême et les indicateurs de développement humain de ces régions sont parmi les plus bas en Amérique du Sud. La Bolivie réussit difficilement à attirer les compagnies minières alors que, chez les voisins, et particulièrement en Argentine, qui n'a pas de tradition minière, les investissements miniers majeurs affluent. The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

In 1990, the European Space Agency (ESA) initiated a technology transfer program to stimulate the wider use of technology developed by the European and Canadian space communities. This paper focuses on the method of technology transfer from the space industry to terrestrial industries, with a focus on the mining resource sector within a program called the Harsh Environments Initiative (HEI) created in 1997. Other resource sector applications include forestry and oil & gas. C-CORE in partnership with the Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) supported by ESA, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and European R&D organizations conduct projects to promote and demonstrate the transfer of innovative technologies from space to non-space industries. Space programs have and continue to develop new knowledge for extra-terrestrial application, e.g., satellite earth observation, manned missions and unmanned planetary exploration. Many of which hold the potential for application on land and ocean. Currently, space technologies of interest to the mine sector range from robotics and image analysis to sensors, software and advanced materials. The HEI works to identify and apply these types of technologies in the areas of automated/tele-controlled mine operations and mine monitoring.
