In a state-of-the-an review of predictive methods for longwall support load calculation, special respect is paid to those techniques which enable actual roof conditions and local lithology of strata to be involved. Principal systems of roof examination include the borehole perforation test and seismic velocity measurements. Roof strata stability is related to caveability classifications and roof inclination due to subsidence. The critical analysis of both load resistance prediction methods and roof stability classifications shows that each has its own value of reliability level. The present research opportunities analysed underline the significance of developing fully reliable prediction techniques as needed by the coal industry.

After many years of research, ICI staff have developed a numerical modelling system for the study of detonator/primer/explosive configurations. Results from this work clearly identified that current primer designs were not as effective in delivering their energy potential as needed. Alternative designs were evaluated and several prototypes, all essentially spherical in shape, were built for testing. Results have shown a significant improvement in various aspects of primer performance, including omni-directional pressure transferral and increased energy release rates. Reliable, high performance priming of explosives is now achievable for a much wider application range.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) are of growing interest in a wide variety of applications. Pattern recognition, speech processing, financial analysis, signal processing and process control are at present the most successful ones. This paper is an attempt to illustrate the potentiality of ANN applied to mineral processing. An introduction to the technology of ANN is first proposed to describe the various components and to explain the various phases encountered in setting up a network. Then examples are given to illustrate the use of ANN dynamic modelling of mineral processing units or plants and in process control.

"The lining of a grinding mill has an important role in creating the conditions for the grinding process. The main purpose of the lining is to transfer the energy taken by the mill motor to the contents of a mill. The power draw curve of the mill, if measured with sufficiently short intervals, describes how well the lining works in lifting and mixing the material to be ground.The power draw curve can also be used for determining the volumetric filling of a mill. This new measuring technique was developed at the Pyhasalmi concentrator in 1989-90. The measuring device with its PC-connections offers an excellent tool for controlling volumetric mill filling, for maximizing throughput and for research purpose (e.g. process studies, mill linings design).The paper describes the new method and the results achieved at Outokumpu's concentrators.INTRODUCTIONVarious methods have been developed for measuring mill load; weighing, noise, etc. Weighing is one of the most reliable methods but installing the sensor to existing mills is often difficult. Besides the load measurement does not indicate the volumetric filling if the specific gravity of the mill feed fluctuates. Noise measurement has often failed with its sensitivity to various disturbance sources.As known, the power draw measurement is one of the most accurate measurements in grinding circuits and therefore it has been utilized in sophisticated control, e.g. in power peak seeking algorithms for maintaining maximum grinding efficiency.About 10 years ago power oscillation measurement was developed at Pyhasalmi concentrator. In this method the amplitude of the oscillation caused by the lifters was measured. The oscillation amplitude and the mill filling has quite a good correlation and together with the power draw measurement it could be used for maximizing mill throughput (Koivistoinen and Miettunen, 1989). The main difficulties in this method were that the dependence between mill filling and the amplitude is unlinear and that the dependence also is individual for each mill.The method developed during 1989-90 is also based on the power oscillation but on its phase shift. In principle level of the material in a mill is measured. The method has been successfully used for maximizing throughput at Pyhasalmi and Enonkoski concentrators and at Harjavalta slag concentrator."

The common approach of designing blasts on a trial and error basis is quickly coming to an end. When utilizing the full scale blast environment, trial and error can quickly become cost prohibitive and leaves much to be desired in terms of true blast diagnostics. In these situations testing is usually only continued until a perceived improvement is achieved and when the gross undesirables in blast results are removed. This does does not preclude, however, that further improvements of up to 100% or more can not be obtained.

The Jim Bridger Coal Mine, operated by Bridger Coal Co., is located in Sweetwater County, WY about 56 km (35 miles) northeast of Rock Springs. Bridger Coal is a joint ven¬ture between Nerco Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Co. The permit boundary encompasses more than 81 km'- (20,000 acres) on the western side of the Continental Divide. Since the mine began opera¬tions in 1974, it has produced about 82 Mt (90 million st) of coal while moving about 344 hm3 (450 million cu yd) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 4.5 Mt to 6.4 Mt (5 million to 7 million st) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on-site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2000-MW generating station. Electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid that includes Oregon, Idaho and northern California. Geology The mine is located on the northeast flank of the Rock Springs uplift. This is a broad, asymmetrical anticlinal feature about 97 km (60 miles) long and 56 km (35 miles) wide with a north-trending axis. This uplift separates the Green River Basin to the west and the Great Divide and Washakie Basins to the east. Precambrian rocks on the apex of the uplift are estimated to be 5200 m (17,000 ft) above the Precambrian rocks in the Green River and Washakie Basins. Normal faults with generally less than 30-m (100-ft) vertical displacement cut through the uplift. The dip of strata on the flanks is generally between 3° and 15°.

The SPOT imagery yields useful information on features of the terrain and discriminates the gossan over the ore zone. Anchored sheep pile is normally used in deep excavations, many of which only require stability in accordance with Terzaghi theory. In this paper, based on the experience, new lateral earth pressure method is adopted taking account into interaction among soil, anchors and sheet piles so that a group for the project under very difficult conditions and very severe requirments, especially, for the displacements are determined according to that mentioned above. During and after construction, displacements monitoring were carried out for about four months, which was proved that there was a little difference between calculation and practice.

Pile compression load capacity prediction methods are divided into four categories for purposes of discussing their reliability compared to static load test results. The categories considered are: 1) static analysis, 2) driving formulas, 3) wave equation analysis, and 4) dynamic measurement and analysis. It is concluded that any method of static analysis that works for the geological deposit in question may be satisfactory. However, any given method can be quite wrong when applied to other deposits of soil that are different in terms of their engineering and geological characteristics. Dynamic formulas are found to be theoretically unjustifiable. The ready availability of the wave equation analysis for microcomputers eliminates the need to utilize dynamic formulas. The wave equation analysis is found to be the best analytical method for making predictions both for design and for construction control. Dynamic methods of measurement and analysis are found useful, but have limitations that have caused troubles on many projects. Two case histories are presented that show the limitations of dynamic measurement and analysis, and of the wave equation analysis. Soil deposits exist that defeat both the wave equation and dynamic measurement techniques; static load tests are currently the only method of proving the load capacity of piles in such soils.

The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

Supercritical fluids are gases compressed to near liquid densities and, as such, have unique properties compared to liquids: low viscosity; zero latent heat; high diffusivity and pressure-dependent, solvation characteristics. These properties are being utilised in new processes and current research is delineating areas where such processes may be applicable to extractive metallurgy. The processes and areas of interest are as follows: Supercritical Fluid Extraction in which substrates are dissolved at high pressure and fractionated at successively lower pressures. Areas of interest include extraction of organic materials for regeneration of activated carbon for the CIP process and for upgrading alumina industry products and, separation of transition metal chlorides. ò Supercritical Water Oxidation in which high pressure gaseous water acts as a medium in which substrates are oxidised while suspended or dissolved. This process may be of use for oxidation of organics in Bayer liquor and oxidation of mine waters etc. ò Supercritical Fluid Reactions where reactions occur in a supercritical fluid medium, particularly when the medium itself is a reactant. This may be of use in treating refractory or carbon-aqueous auriferous ores and in lower-temperature chlorination of transition metal oxides. Research is described which is aimed at chlorination and separation of transition metal oxides by two supercritical operations.

INTRODUCTION Dry concentration or pneumatic cleaning uses air currents as the separating medium. Pneumatic cleaning in the United States today is limited to three or four operations. In fact, the quantity of bituminous coal cleaned pneumatically has declined from its peak in 1965 of about 25.4 million tons (23.1 Mt) to its current level (1988) of less than 4 million tons (3.64 Mt) annually, as shown in Fig. 7-9 1. In 1940, pneumatic methods accounted for 15% of the bituminous coal and lignite cleaned in the United States as given in Table 7-32. Currently, pneumatic methods account for less than 2%. The largest air plant was built in Pennsylvania about 1968 with 14 units processing 1400 tph (1280 t/h) of 3/, in. X 0 (19 mm X 0) raw feed and two additional units retreating middlings. This same plant is one of only three or four plants still operating air-cleaning devices in the US. A wet plant was added in 1985 to increase the efficiency of cleaning the fines. The air plant is still used as a scalping operation for the coarse material. Five additional operations are either no longer in production or have discontinued the use of air tables within the last year. Wet cleaning methods are now being employed at the facilities that have discontinued air table operation. he advantage of dry cleaning techniques is the low moisture content of the clean coal product. However, to decrease respirable dust, mining operations must use water sprays on modem mining equipment. This water adds to the moisture content of the run-of-mine coal and decreases the effectiveness of dry cleaning processes that rely on low surface moistures in the feed to allow for good separations. Wet cleaning methods are preferred, especially since they also allow for much sharper separations. The advantage of dry cleaning techniques is the low moisture content of the clean coal product. However, to decrease respirable dust, mining operations must use water sprays on modem mining equipment. This water adds to the moisture content of the run-of-mine coal and decreases the effectiveness of dry cleaning processes that rely on low surface moistures in the feed to allow for good separations. Despite dry concentration's drawbacks, research has continued into dry concentrating methods, including both electrostatic and magnetic separation techniques. The real application for future dry cleaning processes is probably at the power plant between the pulverizer and the boiler feed where particles are already dry and ground to fine sizes (- 200 mesh [ -0.075 mm]), increasing the effectiveness of the separation and also, possibly, increasing the liberation of clean coal from finely disseminated impurities. From a utility's viewpoint, pneumatic cleaning offers the best delivered Btu cost, based on the premise that a percent of moisture is just as detrimental as a percent of ash. For example: • emissions and atmospheric levels of CO2 are rising at a rate more than 50% of the U.S. increase; global temperature continues to rise, especially during the last decade;• while S02 emissions have been falling since 1984, NOz has declined only slightly since that time; N02 in Canada rose 43% during 1970-87, compared with a 7% rise in the U.S.;• municipal discharges of phosphorus and BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) to fresh water have been rising steadily since 1983);• pulp and paper mill discharges to fresh and Pacific coastal waters have been rising, 1970-87;• migratory game bird populations (Prairie Mallard, Northern Pintail) have been declining for the last 20 years;• total per capita energy use continues to climb.The State of the PublicSimilarly, data from recent public opinion surveys shows that public concerns about the environment are either rising, or are remaining at a high level despite the competing claims of the economy and political events for attention.For example, Professor Reginald Bibby's national survey this year shows that Canadians rank our top three issues as theeconomy, the environment and government incompetence.An Angus Reid survey commissioned by the Mining Association of Canada and other mining organizations in 1989 showsthat, despite general support for its economic benefits:• 67% of the general public perceive the mining industry to be a major source of pollution and environmental contamination;• 68% believe that a new mine should not be developed if it will disturb local wildlife;• 52% would prohibit a new mine if it required a road through a national park;• 49% would disallow mine development if it took as much land as an average farm in an agricultural area or if it limited sports fishing in a local lake."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods and technology that may improve safety and production when applied to existing mining machines. Toward those goals, the Bureau has developed navigation systems that provide machine positional information while in the production area. This research has been limited in the past because the Bureau had only one type of mining machine to do experiments. Addressing this problem, the Bureau, along with Carnegie Mellon University, has developed a generic vehicle emulator, in the form of a wheeled vehicle with an onboard computer, known as the Locomotion Emulator, that provides a software-selectable vehicle emulation package. Preliminary testing by the Bureau has shown that the emulator can accurately imitate the maneuvers of the software selected vehicle type. Now the Bureau can test their navigation systems on different vehicle types without having to procure each of the vehicles. This report completely describes the emulator as well as all the modes in which it can be operated.

This paper presented herein, describe the special design of an open type coal dust explosion apparatus and the laboratory works for investigating the effectiveness of the parameters on coal dust explosion and the prevention of the propagation of the coal dust explosion flame. Coal sample which were taken from the San-Ying collieries, were passed through the process of crushing ,grinding and screening to get the required particle size, ranged from 40 mesh to 200 mesh under size for testing purpose, the rock dust spreaded on the surface of coal dust and water mixed with coal dusts were employed for preventing the coal dust explosion and the propagation of the explosion flame.

Three independent methods of coal classification can be distinguished, namely on the basis of grade, type and rank. The latter two can be determined accurately and unambiguously only by means of microscopical techniques. These three independent variables affect all the coal properties and therefore also the technological behaviour of a particular coal. The influence of the inorganic constituents of coal on the fusibility of the ash and on the length of the slag, and also on fouling and slagging, is discussed. The fractionation of the ash-forming constituents during combustion and gasification of pulverised coal shows that fouling and slagging are not related directly to the fusibility and composition of ash of the coal as a whole. The results of combustion experiments using a drop furnace technique indicate that the ignition temperatures of the light volatiles in the coal, and of the formed char, as well as the burn-out time of the char are more dependent on the rank than on the type or grade of the original coal. High-ash coals, however, apparently ignite at lower temperatures and are more reactive than low-ash coals of similar type and rank. The surface properties of coal, which are important in froth flotation and oil agglomeration, correlate well with the inherent moisture content (and by inference with the heat of wetting and the calorific value) and therefore with the type and rank of the coal. In coal exploration, variations of rank offer the possibility of predicting the presence of an intrusion near the seam, thus contributing to more effective exploration and mine planning.

It had an internal diameter of 3,36 m and was part of a sewage treatment works project for county Middlesex. The initial intent of the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) was to improve worker health by providing more information about the hazards of chemicals used in the workplace. However, the impact of the HCS goes well beyond worker right-to-know. There are direct costs associated with compliance. In addition, labelling and hazard communications can provide a competitive advantage to producers of minerals that have not been identified as hazardous. Often, the lack of hazardous information about a substance is due to the lack of scientific study, rather than an indication of product safety. Currently, industry and regulators sometimes give known hazards greater weight than unknown risks.

The electric operation and design features of the 11.000 H.P. variable speed SAG mill gearless drive is presented. The function of the frequency converter, control system drive and lubrication systems are described. An analysis of the harmonic characteristic in the Supply System and Motor is presented, and the dynamic development of the stator current, speed and the magnetic flux in the start-up process of the drive is evaluated. Besides, the most important aspects in the commissioning and maintenance of the drive are analyzed.

As of the end of October, 1990, there have been eight spontaneous combustion heatings reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) at the No. 5 Mine. A reportable heating is defined as one with elevated surface temperatures of the strata greater than ll°C (20°F) above the ambient. The first heatings occurred in November, 1986. The last three heatings were located near the start line of "K" Longwall Panel in the southwest where mining had begun on May 21, 1990. All of the heated areas had been at the time of detection, or were sometime areas of high ventilation pressure differentials or high air velocities. All of the heated areas are in an expanded seam with associated, extensive floor heave which is characteristic of all of the expanded seam thus far exposed by development mining in the No. 5 Mine. Jim Walter Resources, Inc. submitted a plan to MSHA which would reduce the potential for spontaneous combustion at the No. 5 Mine by reducing high air velocities and high pressure differentials in the gob. These two parameters are the dynamics which feed oxygen to the pyrite, thus initiating the oxidation process which can lead to spontaneous combustion. No. 5 Nine operated under this plan for 29 shifts before mining on the longwall was stopped by MSHA and the Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan revoked. This paper briefly details the geology of the expanded seam and history of the heatings. It also gives a retrospective view of the operation under the Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan and reasons why it was revoked by MSHA. Currently, knowledge of the reaction process of the footwall coal seams at No. 5 Mine and other potential spontaneous combustion seams in the United States is limited. There are techniques used in the United States and other countries to minimize the potential for heatings in spontaneous combustion prone areas. The No. 5 Mine has attempted to utilize this current technology. However, in deep, gassy mines the problem is complex.
