The effectiveness of a flotation column is due principally to the addition of wash water to the froth phase. The wash water flow rate can be significant, especially so for systems yielding a high weight recovery of fine solids, e.g. zinc sulfide flotation. Therefore, it is critical to recognize and assess the impact of the water addition upon upstream separation stages. This paper examines column flotation circuit configurations using data from a portable 2 t/day pilot plant. The objective is to provide an improved basis for column design, either as a retrofit or as part of a new circuit.

Most of us are aware of the relationship between the golden-yellow resin spots on Upper Cretaceous Wasatch Plateau coals and fossil tree resins (?amber?). Nevertheless, confusion remains about the exact chemical composition and structure of commercial coal resin preparations as well as their observed heterogeneity. In order to arrive at a more detailed chemical description we need to distinguish between micropetrographic, organic geochemical and process technological definitions of coal resins, which may include substantial quantities of constituents unrelated to fossil tree resins. New information on composition and origin obtained by Curie-point pyrolysis/evaporation in combination with isobutane chemical ionization mass spectrometry, as presented in this paper, points to the presence of four more or less distinct resin components: (1) a sesquiterpenoid polymer; (2) sesqui-and triterpenoid monomers and dimers; (3) a suite of triterpenoid alcohols, ketones and acids; and (4) a series of increasingly aromatized hydrocarbons with naphthalene and picene type skeletons. Moreover, a strong similarity is found between the composition of recent Dammar resin and fossil Wasatch Plateau coal resins. Some of the technological implications of these findings and the consequent need for a more precise chemical definition and nomenclature are discussed.

From 19BS thru the present, Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company has been involved in several transportation construction projects in the Seattle area. Two of these contracts, the Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel, and The Seattle Bus Tunnel, had unique foundation features. MT. BAKER RIDGE TUNNEL ACCESS PITS The Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel is part of the general upgrading of the I-90 freeway between I-405 and I-5 (see Fig. 1). It is located on the western shore of Lake Washington and consists of a 1300 foot long large diameter tunnel thru Mt. Baker Ridge. The ridge consists of over consolidated silts and clays overlain by a loose to medium dense silty fine sand. The water table is perched in this upper layer of material. The clays of Seattle have a history of being very sensitive to excavation. The hills are marginally stable and numerous landslides have occurred recently in the area of the tunnel. [ ]

"Since the late 1970s, extensive work has been carried out at Placer Dome Inc. 's Dome Mine to develop new mining methods and equipment to improve the productivity of narrow vein mining (Mining Magazine, Oct. 1986, pp. 308-317; Mar. 1988, pp. 176-/79). This work has been focused on mining veintype deposits varying from 0.9 m to 1.5 m in width using open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods.In 1989, the Dome Mine entered into a contract with Ram Raising Ltd., a joint venture company of Angus Martin and I.S. Redpath Ltd., to develop and mine a narrow vein test stope using an Alimak Raise Climber. Early results have been favourable, indicating that Alimak methods can be used successfully to mine narrow vein are.HistoryThe Dome Mine, which has been in continuous operation since 1910, is located in South Porcupine, part of the city of Timmins, Ontario. The mine is wholly-owned and operated by Placer Dome Inc. and is part of Placer Dome Inc.'s international stable of of 19 mines."

"The San Antonio gold mine, in the Archean Rice Lake Greenstone Belt, was in continuous production from 1932 to 1968, during which period the mine yielded 1.35 million ounces (41 985 kg) of gold and 195,000 ounces (6065 kg) of silver from 4.88 million tons (4.44 Mt) of ore for average grades of 0.28 ounces per ton (9.0 g/t) gold and 0.04 ounces per ton (1.3 g/t) silver. After the 1968 closure, several publications appeared implying that gold grade of ore decreased with increasing depth.Recent observations by the authors show that the relatively low grades in the middle levels of the mine are controlled geologically. However, the reduced average are grade in the lower levels of the mine was due to inadequate mining control that led to a high level of dilution. The similarity of geological factors such as vein styles within structural domains, variations in mining control, recent ore muck sampling results and lithogeo chemical profiles all indicate the similarity of ore in both upper and lower levels.Strict mining control should yield improved grades of gold for future production from the lower levels at San Antonio, in contrast with the production grades of the late 19605that represented extensively diluted ore. High-quality production records are an essential component in re-evaluating a past producer, particularly where workings are accessible. Poorly founded conclusions which cannot be checked by access to workings can have a negative impact on the evaluation procedure."

The Barrytown ilmenite pilot plant was commissioned in two stages using Westport Titanium Project heavy mineral concentrate. The wet concentrator was commissioned on the 17 December 1989 and produced magnetic concentrate from this date.   The Drymill was commissioned on the 27 January 1990 and produced product grade ilmenite successfully from the onset.   The commissioning period was exceptionally short by normal standards and few problems were encountered. This paper concludes with general observations of operations of the pilot plant.

The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

A high purity electrolysis solution is essential for hydrometallurgical zinc winning processes. For this reason ferric iron containing compounds such as jarosite are precipitated as iron and impurity collector during the calcine leaching. Jarosite thus forms a chemical waste and creates environmental problems. This research contributes to the development of a wet jarosite treatment process, where less contaminated jarosite is produced which can act as an iron source. The present work studies jarosite precipitation kinetics and the uptake of zinc cations in batch and continuous experiments. The distribution coefficient for zinc in continuous experiments is constant for a wide ratio of zinc over ferric ions in the solution. Addition of NH, + ions in batch experiments accelerates the conversion rate equivalent to the driving force increment. Addition of 50,2-ions above the stoichiometric ratio increases the conversion rate less then could be expected from the increase in the estimated driving force. Zinc ions tend to retard the conversion rate. An increasing reaction temperature increases the conversion rate. Below 75 ?C the conversion rate approximates zero.

The paper describes how a multivariable control scheme was developed and implemented for the run-of-mine milling circuit at a gold mine belonging to Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited. The key variables that are controlled are slurry level in the sump, mass of material in the mil, and product size. The control scheme has resulted in reliable control of the dynamics of the plant, and has provided a good basis for the optimization of plant operation by the selection of suitable set Points.

The zinc pressure leach process developed by Sherritt Gordon, Ltd. permits the direct leaching of sulphide concentrates according to the overall reaction, ZnS +H,zS04 +402.+ZnS04+H20 +S0 The kinetics of the leach are affected by three rate controlling steps; ( l) oxygen mass transfer from the gas to the leach solution, (2) homogeneous oxidation of ferric ion to ferric ion by dissolved 011.ygen and (3) ferric ion leaching of zinc sulphide in the presence of a sulphur dispersing detergent (lignin sulphonic acid). Fundamental studies have been conducted to identify the factors that influence the kinetics of each individual rate controlling step. Oxygen mass transfer studies have been directed toward optimization of the agitator configuration for solids mixing and gas pumping from the atmosphere above the leach slurry. The rate of ferrous oxidation by molecular oxygen and the rate of zinc sulphide leaching by ferric ion have been studied over a wide range of temperature and solution compositions. The study of zinc sulphide leaching by ferric ion was supplemented by a series of interfacial tension measurements in the liquid sulphur - zinc sulphate solution system. The various kinetic studies have been summarized in terms of the importance of each rate to the performance of the process.

Single station group velocities of fundamental made Rayleigh waves over the period range 15-100 s are carguted for five provincial profiles of the West Pacific. Based on recordings of earthquakes around the West Pacific by the W~ (World Wide Standard Seismic Network) stations AFI (Afianalu), HNR (Honiara), WEL (Wellington), PAR (Raratonga) and RAB (Rabaul). The inversion of the derived dispersion curves for average shear velocity-depth structure of the crust, LID and LVL shows that (i) the over-all structure beneath the profile 'westernSamoa-Micronesia-Mariana' is in between that of regions 3 and 4 of Pacific Ocean (Yu and Mitchell, 1979), except that the velocity is slightly lower, (ii) the uppermost mantle beneath the 'Vitiaz Trench' profile between AFI and HNR is similar to that of region 2 of the Pacific - in other words, thin LID and thick LVL; (iii) the structure beneath the ' Ibnga-Keradec Ridge' profile has a thick crust with thick sediments, and LID-LVL velocity and thickness are similar to region 3 of the Pacific; (iv) beneath the profiles ' Tonga/ Kermadec Trench events-RAR station' the structure is intermediate between regions 3 and 4 of the Pacific Crean; (v) from decomposition of the 'Solomon-meriana' profile, the structure beneath the Cntong Java Plateau has a thick crust with thick sediments and the uppermost mantle is similar to that of region 3 of the Pacific clean.

The Vulture mine near Wickenburg, Arizona was a major gold producer from 1863 to 1942, having yielded about 11t(12.1 st) Au and 8t (8.8st) Ag. Gold occurs as coarse native metal and electrum in quartz veins and also finely dis¬seminated within a quartz monzonite sill and its silicified wall rock. The sill is semi-conformable within a Proterozoic volcaniclastic-dominated sequence, all dipping north about 35°. Early mining focused on the vein-hosted gold, particularly in the immediate hanging wall and footwall of the sill. Later efforts included some open-pit mining of the outcropping sill and adjacent altered and mineralized rock. Two sets of post-mineral faults have complicated the orebody geometry. The sill is a 350 m (1148 ft) long apophysis from a quartz mozonite stock to the west of the mine area. The stock has been dated at 85 my and contains abundant lesser gold occurrences in its core and about its margins. The Proterozoic rocks are notably lean in precious metals except where altered in proximity to the Creataceous stock and sill. Circumstances dictate an interpretation of epigenetic mineralization related to the Laramide intrusion.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of geophysical methods to determine rock mass characteristics, particularly rock quality, lithology, and fracture parameters that are important for determining the feasibility of in situ leaching operations. As part of this research, two Bureau-developed crosshole geophysical systems are described that can be used for site investigation and rock mass characterization. Results are given for performance tests at field sites in Arizona and Texas and for correlations between the crosshole seismic data with fracture frequency, rock quality, and lithologic variation. Recommendations are made for using elastic waveform propagation characteristics and dynamic elastic properties for improving rock mass characterization in the geomechanical assessment of in situ leaching deposits.

An improved method for preparing gravimetric standard gas mixtures of helium-4 in nitrogen has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A single-pan 12-kg analytical balance that has a sensitivity of 3 mg is used to prepare the mixture. The balance will accommodate a cylinder having a volume of approximately 4 L that weighs approximately 5 kg. The method has been improved to a precision of ±O.04 pct by performing four successive dilutions, by improved handling of gases in the manifold, and by using an improved analytical method to select high-purity gases.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide evidence for the formation of Cr(V) intermediates in the enzymatic reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R) in the presence of NADPH, indicating an initial single-electron transfer step in the reduction mechanism. Depending on the pH, at least two different Cr(V) species are generated which are relatively long-lived. In addition, we have detected the hydroxyl (·OH) radical formation during the GSSG-R catalyzed reduction of Cr(VI) by spin trapping, employing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) and a-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (4-POBN) as spin traps. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) causes only a minor effect on the ·OH radical and Cr(V) formation, indicating that the ~ - is not significantly involved in the reaction mechanism. Catalase enhances the Cr(V) formation and substantially inhibits the ·OH radical formation, indicating the involvement of hydrogen peroxide (H20 2) in the reaction mechanism. Addition of H20i suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the ·OH radical fonnation. Measurements involving N-ethylmaleimide show that the Cr(V) species, produced enzymatically by the reduction of Cr(VI) by GSSG-R, react with H2O2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might participate in the initiation of Cr(VI) carcinogenicity.INTRODUCTIONC(VI) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals [1-4) and to cause mutations in bacteria and transformation of mammalian cells [5-8). In contrast, most Cr(lll) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic [9, 10]. Cr(VI) and Cr(lll) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) ions are rapidly transported across cellular membranes [2, 11-13), while Cr(lll) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents [3]. Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(Vl) is required for its reaction with DNA [2], the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(VI) reduction have been the focus of studies during the past decade but the details are still not understood."

INTRODUCTION I retired in 1977 and have been enjoying myself ever since doing odd jobs for various people - on occasions, politicians. I commend it to you as post retirement - get involved in situations that nobody else will take on. It produces all sorts of excitement, it is a lot of fun and, courtesy of the media, you provide great raw material for their current Punch and Judy shows. The example of the adventures in the Escondida financing made me think about the history of the minerals industry in the United States. In order to see more clearly what is going to happen in the future, we have to look at the past and what we have learned, and try to extrapolate from that a scenario for the future. This paper is about global material cycles and the financial needs of the extractive industries. Since about 2,000 years B.C. we have been living in the Iron Age. Since about 4,000 B.C. we have been living in the Copper Age. These have been the two foundations of modern industrial society. Understanding the use of metals and materials helps us understand the civilization in which we live today. Let me focus more closely on the United States, particularly in this century. In the first two-thirds of this century the United States was growing and expanding and developing. It was providing for its inhabitants a society which was enjoying the benefits of a rising standard of living, improved opportunities and the ability to support a population growing at quite a dramatic rate. It is still growing. In the Department of Commerce, there is a clock that shows how many people there are in the United States. It turns all the time; the numbers are going up. On January 21,1980, when Ronald Reagan was sworn in as President, the number on that clock was a little over 220 million, and in the last week before he left, it was travelling towards 245 million. During his period in Washington, we have added , the equivalent of one total state such as California. That gives the dimensions of the U.S. appetite for raw material inputs. The inputs are of critical importance. COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE During the first two-thirds of this century, the minerals sector enjoyed comparative advantages. There was a clear understanding of the importance of minerals enshrined in the tax legislation of the country from the early decades of this century - the depletion allowance. No other country identified as clearly that the supplies of minerals were finite. As they are used up, just as with a wearing-out machine, one must get capital back to replace the resource when the time comes. Within the last decade, that idea has been questioned and criticised. It is now seen as giving money away to a preferred part of the economy, instead of recognizing what depletion is all about. In previous times it insured that the U.S. always was able to regenerate the capital in its minerals industry, so that it could remain competitive. The U.S. had plenty of everything, including energy. We had a growing population. Equally important, we had an agriculture that led the world in productivity, even as far back as the turn of the century. It continues to do so. We still retain that comparative advantage, an ability to produce our foodstuffs in quantity and quality at excellent cost. Look at another ingredient of our comparative advantage, the energy position. We ran through the first two-thirds of the century with ever- decreasing energy costs. In the 1940s and 1950s the coal industry went into a decline. Why? Because the $3.00 - $5.00 a ton cost of mining coal in the U.S. represented relatively expensive energy. A ton of good grade bituminous coal contains 25 million BTU's. $0.20 a million BTU's represents $5.00 a ton at the pithead. Mill flotation tailings impounded at the Gooseberry Mine site between 1976 and 1984 were determined to be an economic source of gold and silver. The tailings would be recoverable by standard heap leach technology in conjunction with feed agglomeration. Metal recovery at 85% gold and 75% silver is attained on properly agglomerated (pelletized) tailings that average 85% -75 µm (-200 mesh). The impounded tailings averaged more than 18% moisture (32% moisture maximum at depth) in place behind the storage dam. Therefore, the mining method, mixing and agglomeration technique, and materials handling practice were major considerations in making this operation a financial success. The Gooseberry Tailings Project is located about 35 km (22 miles) east of Sparks, NV. The project is owned by Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. The company's Western Nevada Gold prop¬erty surrounds the Gooseberry Mine by several miles on all sides. Gold and silver mineralization at the Gooseberry Mine is restricted to a narrow calcite-quartz vein. Calcite makes up more than 80% of the vein throughout the mine. The host rock consists of porphyritic andesites and dacites constituting volcanic flows. The rocks are propylitized or silicified to a varying degree. This ore mineralogy, then, also describes the tailings processed by heap leaching. The Gooseberry tailings were auger sampled in 1983 and again in 1987 after a final lift of 109 kt (120,000 st) was deposited in 1983 and 1984. The total volume behind the dam was calculated from planimeter measurements from tailings surface to original area topography.

The behavior of tieback retaining walls depends on many factors, including soil properties, groundwater conditions, construction sequence, spacing and stiffness of tiebacks and soldier piles, tieback loads, and others. The primary design considerations for tieback walls are 1) adequate stability and 2) limiting wall movements. Traditional design methods rely on apparent earth pressure diagrams and experience to predict the forces which must be supported by the tiebacks to provide adequate stability. The required soil properties depend upon whether the soil is sand, soft clay, or stiff clay. Design to limit wall movements is more difficult and the usual approach is to design the wall with an adequate factor of safety for stability and then evaluate wall movements during construction through the use of load tests on individual tiebacks and monitoring of wall movements by optical surveying, slope indicators, and extensometers. If excessive movements are likely to occur, it is often not known until construction is well underway. This approach is reflected in the fact that few tieback walls fail due to a lack of adequate stability, while most litigation involving tieback wall performance is related to excessive movements. Much progress has been made in recent years in methods for predicting the movement of all types of insitu retaining walls (Clough et al. 1989, Clough and O'Rourke 1990). These methods are based upon both experience and analytical methods. This paper reviews the methods currently available for evaluating both the stability and movements of tieback retaining walls. Case histories involving excavations constructed in the downtown Seattle area are used to evaluate the applicability of the available methods to Seattle conditions and to illustrate the importance of soil behavior in tieback wall performance.

This capability combined with the use of a graphics overlay on the video and accessed through a keyboard or touchscreen creates a very powerful and versatile marketing or training tool.
