Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300° and 600°C (570° and 1,110°F) is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies, depending on structural homogeneity, porosity, and gangue quantity. Sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favors disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

The equations of heat conduction are numerically solved for two kinds of artificial freezing- mechanical freezing and liquid nitrogen freezing. A two dimensional finite difference model simulating the freezing field is developed. The procedure introduces a way to simulate the effect of latent heat released when water transforms from liquid to solid. The procedure also produces a way to calculate the harmonic mean of heat conductivity used when dealing with heterogeneous material. The theoretically derived temperature distributions in frozen soil are given and compared with measured data. An analysis is made on the thermal design in shaft freezing. The average temperature of frozen soil is calculated by using numerical integration. The regularity of development of frozen soil radius is revealed and given in an appropriate mathematical model.

"The Agnew nickel deposit occurs in a major linear greenstone belt in the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Province of Western Australia, and has been subjected to mid-amphibolite facies nietamorphism of dynamic style. The largest dunitic ultramafic body in the Perseverance Block is host to the bulk of the nickel mineralization. The Perseverance Ultramafic is mineralogically zoned and has an embayed western margin against a mixed metasedimentarv-metavolcanic wallrock sequence.Three categories of nickel sulphide mineralization are concentrated on this western margin at the thickest part of the ultramafic exposure. Massive sulphides characteristically occur as contact mineralization, internal mineralization and as remobilized concentrations in vein form structures. Disseminated ore constitutes the largest volume of mineralized materials in the deposit and occurs in three separate shoots in en-echelon relation. Weakly mineralized 'cloud sulphide' zones surround and envelop the shoots and persist much further along strike. In the upper mine levels the shoots are truncated by a shear or crush zone, which inhibits geological knowledge to the south but marks a major fundamental structural break.Most of the ore types have suffered supergene alteration and there is a complex variable distribution of the mineralogical facies. The ore types have been metamorphically retextured, but the oreshoots can be characterized by their Ni tenor and some chemical ratios. S/Se values, PGF. and precious metal values are distinctly different from those of other nickel sulphide ores extracted.Despite intense structural and metamorphic modification of the mineralizations, some features support an original magmatic derivation for the sulphides. These include the localization of massive sulphide ore types on one marginal contact within an emhayment structure, the general distribution of disseminated mineralizations located immediately above the massive sulphides and the Ni/Cu, Ni/Co, Fe/Ni ratios of the oreshoots being similar to those of deposits that typify the intrusive dunite- associated class of nickel sulphide deposit. Varying S/Ni ratios between different shoots suggest a revision of the single magmatic intrusion model in favour of a changing composition between successive magmatic episodes."

"The effectiveness of two this compounds for copper sulphide depression in molybdenite flotation has been examined with batch bench scale tests.Both thioglycollate and trithiocarbonate proved to be good depressants producing results similar to those f or cyanide and hydrosulphide. Ferrocyanide was ineffective on the samplematerial tested.The depressing effect of thioglycollate was readily reversed by an addition of xanthate.IntroductionThe separation of molybdenite from copper sulphide minerals has been practised for a long time(1,2). The predominant scheme is to depress the copper sulphides while capitalizing on the ready floatability of molybdenite to effect the separation. There are many recipes for depressing the copper minerals(3), among them the addition of sodium cyanide, particularly if the copper is present primarily as chalcopyrite; some form of sulphide whether as sodium sulphide, sodium hydrosulphide or phosphorous pentasulphide when there is a mixture of copper sulphides such as bornite, chalcocite and chalcopyrite; potassium ferro cyanide may be used when chalcocite is the principal copper sulphide; peroxide or hypochlorite; as well as heating in the presence of lime. There are different mechanisms by which these reagent s depress the copper sulphides. Sodium cyanide and the sulphide-producing compounds apparently reduce the potential of the copper sulphides to the point where they ar e rendered unfloatable by xanthates . Another study(4) showed that after cyanide addition, chalcopyrite was rendered un floatabl e until the REDOX potential (measured with a gold electrode with a saturated calomel reference) had become more positive than -250 mY. If the chalcopyrite pulp was conditioned after the cyanide addition the REDOX potential increased slowly, whereas if air was introduced during the conditioning the potential r ose much more rapidly. The difference in time to reach the desired level of - 250 mV was as much as 20 minutes' 25 minutes being required when air was absent but less than 5 minutes when air was admitted . These observation s demonstrate some of the problems encountered when using cyanide to depress sulphides such as chalcopyrite . The system adjusts to counteract the depressing effect of the additive. To overcome this tendency it is necessary to either add an overdose at the beginning or to more or less continuously add the regulating reagent. In this study cyanide solution was added under automatic control to maintain a specified REDOX potential."

A mineral survey by Bureau of Mines personnel identified no mineral resources or mineral occurrences with development potential at prospects in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Bentonite occurrences are in Skeleton Canyon and Surprise Canyon. Sand and gravel occurrences are numerous in and near the WSA. Much of the Mecca Hills WSA was leased for oil and gas exploration in 1983. No current mining claims or other leases were found in the study area. The Skeleton Canyon Clay Mine yielded clay to seal irrigation canals, Clay to seal ponds was also mined from the Red Top Clay Mine west of the USA. A sand and gravel pit south of the study area (near Box Canyon Wash) supplied material for local construction projects. A commercial sand and gravel pit was operating in 1983 near the mouth of Thermal Canyon 4 miles west of the WSA.

A series of nineteen shear tests were performed on fractures 1 m2 in area, generated in blocks of sandstone, granite, tuff, hydro- stone and concrete. The tests were conducted under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. A vertical stress assisted fracturing technique was developed to create the fractures through the large test blocks. Prior to testing, the fractured surface of each block was characterized using the Barton JRC-JCS concept. The results of characterization were used to generate the peak strength envelope for each fractured surface. Attempts were made to model the stress path based on the classical transformation equations which assumes a theoretical plane, elastic isotropic properties, and therefore no slip. However, this approach gave rise to a stress path passing above the strength envelope which is clearly unacceptable. The results of the experimental investigations indicated that actual stress path is affected by the dilatancy due to fracture roughness, as well as by the side friction imposed by the boundary conditions. By introducing the corrections due to the dilation and boundary conditions into the stress transformation equation, the fully corrected stress paths for predicting the strength of fractured blocks were obtained.

The estimation of local recoveries is an important issue in a selective mining operation. Two techniques, probability kriging and multigaussian kriging, are applied to estimate local recoveries at Jerritt Canyon. The pros and cons of each method are discussed in light of the results. Both methods provide simple and satisfactory solutions to the problem of estimating local recoveries. Consequently, they can be useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a microprocessor-based real-time control and monitoring system for uranium mining applications. The system is capable of controlling and monitoring up to 768 stations within 3 km of the central processor on a common four-wire cable. It can be used in conjunction with detectors to continuously monitor and display radiation working levels at points throughout the mine. Surface alarms are sounded for critical situations such as rapid radiation buildup, loss of power to monitors or fans, and changes in air door position. Permanent records of all changes are automatically printed out with their time of occurrence. Printouts can also be obtained for shift reports or trend logs. The system can be used to remotely control fan startup and shut-down, and also can alert miners of underground conditions by blowing horns or turning on lights. Battery backup keeps the system operative for up to 4 h in case of a mine power outage. A special software feature permits automatic, time-delayed, sequential restart of fans.

The title of this session seems to have been picked especially for this paper. It is 1984, it is the morning after, and there is one monumental hangover among many if not most of the oil companies that have invested in mining in the past decade or so. How an oil company looks at mining depends on what time period you are talking about. A few years back around the time of investment this is what they were probably looking at: 1. A balance sheet of their own that was beginning to go wild, with many of their commodity prices having already seen increases of two, three, or four fold, and with no end in sight. 2. A need to invest their earnings someplace fast before the stockholders or the government got too interested. And that someplace should be in an industry where their own management skills could be applied. (Only a true cynic would suggest that this is a form of job security) 3. In mining there was an industry amazingly similiar to their own, one working with non-renewable natural resources, dealing with the same types of government agencies, and having the same type of critics and pressures from the general population. 4. An industry that was somewhat backward as compared with their own, and one where a generous ration of the capital and management skills so handsomely bestowed upon the oil industry could be used to great advantage.

The Deserado Mine and transportation system is the fuel supply portion of the Bonanza Power Plant project. Deserado Mine con¬sists of an underground mine with a capacity of 1,224,700 tonnes (1,350,000 tons) of clean coal per year, a 649 tonne (715 tons) per hour closed water circuit jig type preparation plant, a 5.6-kilometer (3 ½ -mile) overland conveyor with covered slot storage, a unit train rail load-out and 59.5 kilometers (37 miles) of totally independ¬ent, captive electrified railroad. Planning and exploration started in March of 1978. Construction of all facilities was completed in April of 1984, approximately six years after initial planning was commenced. This paper will discuss exploration, environmental permitting, mine planning, engineering and construction of the Deserado Mine project.

Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market. Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogenous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogenous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies.

There are no formulas that guarantee success when it comes to obtaining zoning approval for mineral aggregate mining. Local land use decisions often times represent the most controversial issues faced by community. Public awareness, concern, willingness to get involved, sensitivity to the environment and probably most importantly fear of change only begin to describe the atmosphere in which local land use decisions are made. Add to this the public hearing process which is quasi judicial, adversarial, and unfortunately not designed for resolution of disputes and it is not difficult to see the need for an alternative to present methods. Hopefully, some day we will have a process that will do away with or at least minimize unnecessary, unproductive and unmanageable community conflicts.

The objective of extensive underground experimentation on three longwall coal faces was to improve the stability of mechanised longwall faces through investigation of the relations between support resistance and convergence and resultant deformation of roof and face strata. In particular the influence of high setting and yield pressures on several strata and support parameters was studied in great depth. Increased setting pressures resulting in an increase in setting load densities from 0.15 MN/m2 to O.45 MN/m2 were shown to reduce convergence, face spalling roof flaking, lateral movement of roof and floor, extrusion of the face wall and progressive failure of the coal wall ahead of the face. This was shown to result mainly from the change in roof strata deformation from a wedge shaped compression zone with tension at the face edge to an even beam shaped compression zone over the face area. Debris thickness above the support canopy and below the base was observed to be the one of the most variable parameters which influenced the support characteristics particularly the rate of load acceptance by supports and the roof to floor convergence. A setting load density of 0.4 MN/m2 to 0.5 MN/m2 was found to be optimum under soft to moderately strong sandstone roofs. The authors demonstrated that use of guaranteed set valves with powered supports contribute to good strata control, reduce face down-time and increase face productivity.

INTRODUCTION Lake tapping is a method of blasting an intake into a body of water from below the natural water surface without first lowering that surface or installing a protective cofferdam around the tap hole. Lake taps are done by first excavating a tunnel almost to the water/rock contact and then blasting out the final protective rock plug at one time to allow water to suddenly inflow into the tunnel from the lake. This procedure can be done "dry" or "wet." In the dry method the tunnel is empty of water before the final plug blast while in the wet method it is partially filled with water. This paper describes a wet method lake tap as performed at Alaska Power Authority's Tyee Lake Hydroeletric Project in southeast Alaska. The Tyee Lake project is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Wrangell, Alaska, in a glacially formed valley called the Bradfield Canal. The project consists of a powerhouse located at sea level on the canal, a system of tunnels and shafts connecting the powerhouse to Tyee Lake at elevation 373 m (1225 ft), and an 129 km (80-mile) electrical transmission line leading from the powerhouse to Wrangell and then Petersburg, Alaska. Tyee Lake itself is a natural lake gouged out of the rock by glacial ice during the last ice age. The objective of the project was to tap into the lake and use the water as a source for power production. The techniques used for lake taps have been developed in Norway where conditions are favorable for their use in hydroelectric proj¬ects. Over 100 have been performed. In the United States the Tyee

Municipal solid waste (MSW) contains about 8 pct ferrous metallics which are typically recovered by magnetic separators at municipal resource recovery facilities. At present, only about 182,500 ton/yr of MSW magnetics are being processed for remelting out of the -11 MMton/yr discarded. The Sn in MSW magnetics makes this material difficult to recycle to the steel industry. An electrolytic method using stannous fluoborate-fluoboric acid for removing Sn was evaluated. Optimum concentrations of Sn in the electrolyte and the effects of impurities such as Al, Cu, Fe, and Pb on Sn recovery from the electrolyte were evaluated. Operating parameters were 60 to 65 g/L fluoboric acid and 20 to 30 g/L Sn using stainless steel electrodes at a current density of 60 A/ft2. Tests were run with postconsumer scrap4 and MSW magnetics. Good results were obtained with MSW magnetics, after pretreatment by reshredding, magnetic separation, and air classification. The final Sn content of the MSW magnetics scrap was reduced from 0.18 to 0.017 wt pct. Heat and solvent treatments of MSW magnetics to remove coatings did not significantly improve Sn removal beyond that obtained with material that had only been mechanically pretreated.

The Great Plains Coal Gasification Project is the first commercial scale grass roots synthetic fuels (SNG) plant to be built in the United States. The plant will be constructed in two phases, with each phase producing 125 million cubic feet per day of pipeline quality (970 BTU per cubic foot) substitute natural gas from lignite coal. The plant is located north of Beulah in Mercer County, North Dakota. The first phase complex, when completed, will cost about 1.2 billion dollars and will include all necessary process units, oxygen production, steam generation, coal handling and preparation, utilities and infrastructure. The plant will be owned and operated by, the Great Plains Coal Gasification Associates, a partnership consisting of the following companies: ANG Coal Gasification Company, Mid Con Corporation, Tenneco, Inc., Transco Energy Company and Pacific Lighting Co. The Project began in late 1973 with a Phase I feasibility study and site selection study. The feasibility study was completed in 1975, at which time Kaiser Engineers and C. E. Lummus, the two engineering contractors, proceeded with a Phase II conceptual engineering design for the project. The culmination of the Phase II work was the publication of a detailed scope definition and control estimate, which was to become the cost guideline for procurement and plant construction. Following an engineering slowdown period in 1979, due to continuing delays in regulatory procedures, detailed engineering effort was reinstituted in early 1980 and by mid-1981 was approximately 35 percent complete. The total home office engineering effort amounts to approximately 3.5 million man hours of work split between Kaiser Engineers and Lummus. These totals exclude the engineering effort expended by Lurgi of Germany in the process design. The gasification plant shares the site and certain other facilities with the Basin Electric Power Station. Among these facilities are the plant access railroad, peripheral drainage ditch and raw water supply system. In addition, the gasification plant will draw its power directly from the Basin main substation, and Basin will receive coal from the gasification plant, consisting of the coal fines which cannot be gasified in the Lurgi units. The overall construction program covers a period of approximately 44 months with mechanical completion and initial gas production slated for late 1984. Craft labor requirements amount to approximately 11.5 million man hours and the work force peaked in excess of 4,500 people. In anticipation of an early resolution of both Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ruling and Department of Energy loan guarantee commitments, certain work on the site was commenced during 1980. This work consisted of site rough grading, driving of piles, and erection of three of the plant auxilliary buildings. Orders and subcontracts were placed for compressors, pumps, electrical equipment, material handling equipment, piping, structural steel, boilers, oxygen plant and cooling towers. Over 40 major Federal, State and local permits were required. Among these were such diverse permits as: ? Soil conservation ?Railroad and pipeline rights of way ? Certificates of site compatibility ? Permits for structures in areas controlled by the ? U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ? Environmental permits required by the North ? Dakota Department of Public Health. The preparation of an Environmental Impact Report began in September of 1973. FPC (now FERC) guidelines and North Dakota special requirements were followed except that, at the time, the highly structured form of environmental impact statements we know today was not in use. We were required to develop a number of new sampling and evaluation techniques and reporting procedures at a time when the requirements were vague and often contradictory. In March 1975, field studies were completed and submitted to the Bureau of Recla¬mation, which then began to prepare its own EIS. Two years later, in May 1977, public hearings began on the Project. The hearings and public review of the report drew over 400 comments or questions. Responses o the comments were in¬corporated in a Final Environmental Impact Statement issued in January 1978. In March 1975, the original filing was made for an FPC Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity which included: ? A technical feasibility study ? An Environmental Impact Assessment ? An Economic and financial feasibility assessment. An amended filing was submitted in 1976 to build the plant in two phases because studies then indicated that the cost of the plant had increased substantially. A second amended filing was submitted in 1977 to reflect the involvement of Peoples Gas (now Mid-Con Corporation) in the Project. At the time, it was believed that an FPC Certificate could be issued by December 1977. However, approval would be contingent on the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation having a complete Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Project. Bio-epigenetic sulphur deposits occur in Pecos, Reeves and Culberson Counties of far West Texas. Sulfate reducrng bacteria, utilizing hydrocarbons as energy, transformed gypsum into replacement limestone and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, retained in the porosities of the replacement limestone, was subsequently oxidized by highly oxygenated groundwaters, and native sulphur precipitated. West Texas sulphur was first recognized at surface exposures by William P. Blake, a geologist attached to the Captain Pope Military/ Scientific Expedition of 1854. Attempts were made in the early 1900's to mine these sulphur vent exposures by a retort method, but the ventures met with little success. In 1967, Duval discovered a large sulphur deposit near some of the old sulphur works in Culberson County. Duval also extended a small sulphur deposit in Pecos County. The Frasch process, developed for producing sulphur from Gulf Coast salt domes, proved successful in West Texas type sulphur deposits also. However, modifications of the process were necessary to provide economical and efficient sulphur recovery from the varied ore modes. West Texas conditions and logistics require the ultimate in productivity to be competitive in the domestic and foreign sulphur markets. Several companies, in addition to Duval, are producing or have produced sulphur in West Texas. As of the first of June 1984, a total of 29.4 million long tons of sulphur had been produced west of the Pecos -aver. Duval produced more than 88 percent of that total.

"A computer program is described which will analyze the stability of coal pillars. The extent of the peripheral failed zone and the central elastic core of the pillar, the stress distribution across the pillar and its strength can be determined by a ""sliceby- slice"" analysis technique. The program incorporates a brittle/pseudo-ductile transition point so that a pillar may fail by brittle fracture or pseudo-ductile yield. It is shown that:(i) There is a minimum pillar stress below which fracture cannot initiate; hence there is a minimum pillar strength. (ii) In specific circumstances (narrow pillars) , once fracture initiates at the pillar edge it must propagate immediately to the pillar centre. This unstable situation is called ""catastrophic"" failure and might be regarded as a model of a pillar ""burst "". (iii) For wider pillars, the failed zone ex tends gradually into the pillar as the loading increases until it reaches the pillar centre when the pillar is deemed to have f ailed. This is called the point of ""ultimate"" failure.The critical pillar widths to avoid catastrophic and ultimate failure can be calculated.A hypothetical analysis of five rib pillars is given to illustrate the application and the results obtained from the model. The model is then used to analyze three case histories taken from the literature. The first demonstrates the applicability of the brittle/pseudo-ductile failure criteria for Pittsburgh coal. The second compares the pillar strength formulae derived here with those of Salamon and Munro(13) and Bieniawskiou . The final case history compares the model analysis with field stress measurements in a yielding pillar. In all cases the model results are compatible with the case histories."

"The first known use of activated carbon dates back to the Ancient Egyptians who utilized its adsorbent properties for purifying oils and medicinal purposes. Centuries later, the early ocean going vessels stored drinking water in wooden barrels, the inside of which had been charred. (However, by modern definition the carbon used in these applications could not truly be described as activated.) By the early 19th century, both wood and bone charcoal was in large scale use for the decolorization and purification of cane sugar.However, it was not until the beginning of the First World War that the potential of activated carbon was really capitalized upon. The advent of gas warfare necessitated the development of suitable respiratory devices for personnel protection. Granular activated carbon was used to this end as, indeed, it still is today.By the late 1930's there was considerable industrial scale use of carbon for both gaseous and liquid phase application and new manufacturing processes had been developed to satisfy the needs of industry. During the 1939-1945 war, a further significant development took place - the production of more sophisticated chemically impregnated carbon for the removal of both war and nerve gases."
