? A helper stands beside a continuous miner as the operator is at the controls. The operator means to push the stop button but hits the drum rotation start button by mistake. The drum begins to turn and the bits catch the helper's clothing. He is thrown violently to the ground and suffers multiple contusions. ? A farmer's wife helplessly watches her husband drawn into the claws of farm machinery while she frantically and unsucessfully searches for the control to stop the machine. ? A mechanic on the night shift replaces plugs in the lubrication systems of all three engines of an airliner following routine maintenance. In doing so', he fails to notice that "0" ring seals have not been mounted on the plugs. A few hours later, as the fully loaded airliner is cruising high over the ocean, oil pressure on one engine drops precipitously. The pilots quickly shut down the engine and turn for home. Almost immediately, the two remaining engines lose their oil and fail.

An hydraulic-powered reel system to minimize peak tension transients in shuttle car trailing cables has been theoretically designed and analyzed using a computer. A single spring-loaded take-up sheave stores or gives up cable to maintain tension within specified limits. Controls have been incorporated to shut down the vehicle before all cable is removed from the reel and to de-energize the cable in the event of a reel/cable jam. Full-scale hardware configuration drawings sufficient for manufacture of a test system have been completed.

Deep gas and oil production has been substantially increased over prolonged periods through the use of sintered bauxite propping agents. Since its inception in 1976, over 170,000,000 pounds of high strength ceramic proppants have been employed. Recent field evaluations and economic analysis demonstrate the superiority of sintered bauxite proppant over quartz sand. This paper describes the development, application, field results, and product evolution of sintered bauxite.

Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: (1) quartz and (2) minerals other than quartz. Quartz Quartz, having a great usefulness discovered by the radio communication enthusiasts about 1918, has become a subject of amazingly expanded interest in the US over the past decade as a man-made mineral and a multimillion dollar crystal-growing business. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engineering industry when it is remembered that quartz crystals have long been an important commercial mineral, and that the raw material for "cultured quartz"-that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man-is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals come from Brazil. The larger pieces which meet rigorous standards of quality are used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments are used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government-sponsored research programs in the 1940s that have resulted in the factory growing of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. The development of the cultured quartz crystal is typical of man's success in adapting the product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement perhaps, but foreshadowed by experiments in 1908 by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modern radio equipment is most often controlled as to frequency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added "crystal"-the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The "crystal" is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964; Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to that class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the "piezoelectric effect," which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other, positively charged. When the plate is released from the stress quickly, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By coating the two surfaces thinly with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges may be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the "converse piezoelectric effect" occurs -the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation of the plate and is keyed to this oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, called the AT-cut, having a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal, vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. "In January 1974, the Minerals Division of Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. made the strategic decision to add uranium to its active exploration commodities and through compilation studies selected northern Saskatchewan as the most attractive and cost-effective exploration area in Canada. In August 1974, 100 sq. miles were staked adjacent to Gulf Minerals' Rabbit Lake deposit and east of the Esso Minerals Midwest boulder train. Initial exploration was based on geologic models of the Rabbit Lake deposit.In the summer of 1975, surface surveys delineated radon anomalies which were drilled that winter and found to overlie anomalous concentrations of uranium in the regolith which forms the upper unit of the crystalline basement. Within the crystalline basement, one hole intersected graphite and pyrite with anomalous nickel-cobalt-arsenic. Geochemical and radiometric surveys followed in the summer of 1976. Drilling in the winter of 1977 intersected several zones of graphite and also anomalous, but uneconomic, uranium abundances. Also in 1977, Dahlkamp and Tan (1977) described the coincidence of graphite and uranium at Key Lake and ground EM surveys on CanadianOxy claims detected graphite conductors beneath 250 ft of Athabasca sandstone. Inco Limited joined the project in April 1977 as a 50% partner. The project area was then surveyed using the airborne INPUT EM method, which detected 84 miles of conductors, with associated graphitic metasediments. On the ground these were located with MaxMin surveys, and follow-up drilling located the ""Tent"" Lake uranium zone.In 1978, the Midwest and Dawn Lake discoveries were announced, 7 miles and 2 miles west of the Joint Venture (J.V.) claims; and, in part for this reason, the 1979 winter drilling was concentrated on the deeper west side of the property. Exploration hole 102-79 intersected altered and uraniferous rocks, but stepout holes were barren. Drill hole 153-79 tested an under-snow three-station radon anomaly east of hole 102-79 and intersected 33 feet of 7.51 % U3O8, confirming the disco very of the McClean North zone. The geophysical grid of the McClean North conductor system was extended and detailed a strong, continous conductor to the south, called McClean South. This was drilled in January 1980and hole 1004-80intersected 22 feet of 2.95% U3O8."

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has been working since mid-1977 on a fast track to meet a court-imposed schedule to rehabilitate a large wastewater collection and treatment system at an estimated cost of $1.7 billion. Because of glaciation, the Milwaukee area has an extremely complex geologic environment. The rock surface ranges from outcroppings in the northern and western parts of the area to 76 m (250 ft) below the surface at the mouth of the Milwaukee and Menomonee Rivers. Bedrock beneath the glacial mantle is a thick sequence of early to middle Paleozoic sedimentary rock. To cope with the many complexities of this large public works project, a Program Management Office (PMO) concept has been employed. A Geotechnical Engineering Group was established within the PMO to provide a continuous , unified approach to geotechnical engineering and full disclosure of all geotechnical information in the construction contract documents. It provides qeotechnical engineering to design and construction, develops and maintains a qeotechnical data base, and participates on the claims resource team.

Cobalt/tungsten mineralization at Mt. Cobalt, located 170 km southeast of Mt. Isa in northwestern Queensland, is described. Mineralization occurs in the Kuridala Formation of the Mary Kathleen Group, which is composed dominantly of pelitic schists, carbonates and acid and basic volcanics.Rocks in the region are metamorphosed to amphibolite facies and affected by two generations of tight to isoclinal folds and a third, more open generation of folds. The region is divided into three meridionally trending belts on the basis of structural style, with mineralization concentrated in the central, more highly strained belt.Deformation and metamorphism is probably younger than 1670 m.a., and the rocks are intruded by granitic rocks dated at 1509 ± 22 m.a.Mineralization occurs in shear zones at the contact between an amphibolite and enclosing pelitic schists, and within the amphibolite itself. Mineralization consists of cobaltite and scheelite with lesser chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, i1menite, allanite, xenotime and apatite. The mineralizing event involved addition of K, Cl, CO2 W, As, Cu, Ni, Au and rare earths and depletion of Ca and Na. It altered a hornblendeandesine/labradorite host assemblage to a biotiteoligoclase/andesine-scapolite assemblage. Though tourmalinealteration also occurs, it is probably not related to mineralization.It is concluded that the mineralization and alteration assemblages formed by reaction of saline fluids with amphibolite close to the peak of amphibolite facies metamorphism.The fluids are probably metamorphically derived, and their movement was channelled through high strain zones in the sequence. The material carried by the fluids was derived from the metasedimentary/metavolcanic pile as a whole.Other deposits in the Mt. Cobalt-Selwyn area have characteristics comparable with Mt. Cobalt, and the mechanism for the genesis of Mt. Cobalt may have applications at other areas in the region.

The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. In many instances, the actual production from a longwall face does not equal the planned capacity. General problem areas which have been identified include face length and panel depth, face area and gate entry roof support, face conveyor and shearer wear, outby haulage system failures, number of entries in longwall gate development and longwall move time. The performance of a longwall face is totally dependent on the interaction of these and many other factors. To explore fully these interactions, a systems analysis of longwalls has been performed. In this paper, the systems approach, the factors considered in the analysis, and the results of the analysis are presented.

Large-scale groundwater withdrawals are necessary to depressurize a confined aquifer system allowing the dry open-pit mining of the overlying phosphate ore. The extent of the existing and planned groundwater development led to the establishment by the State of North Carolina of Capacity Use Area No. l. Groundwater use in the Capacity Use Area is regulated by a permitting system. A two-dimensional finite-difference ground- water flow model was developed for North Carolina Phosphate Corporation. The aim of the model is to aid the Corporation in matters relating to permitting by serving as a predictive tool. The model can be used to project regional water level impacts resulting from various scenarios of depressurization pumping.

Production tests at Reserve Mining Company's iron ore pelletizing plant established that rubber-lined balling dm produce a green pellet equivalent in quality to those produced in conventional balling drums equipped with reciprocating cutter bars. The flexing action of the rubber liner prevents concentrate buildup in the drums, eliminating the need for a cutter bar. Advantages of the rubber-lined drum includes a reduction in maintenance and operating manpower, reduced bentonite consumption with less drum surging, reduced power consumption, and improved drum on time.

The Bureau of Mines measured respirable dust in coal mines by means of multiple dust samplers worn by persons moving about the mines. The measurements were made primarily to evaluate the effectiveness of certain dust-control techniques; however, for this report, the data have been analyzed to determine the precision of the personal dust-sampling measurements. A total of 68 sets of measurements were available from multiple personal samplers. The measured dust masses were less than 1.0 mg because the sampling times were short. The coefficient of variation calculated from these data was 18.5 pct, compared with coefficients of variation ranging from about 10 to 30 pct, which were calculated from the most precise and extensive data available for fixed-point dust measurements made in coal mines. From this comparison, it is concluded that dust samplers worn by personnel are as precise as fixed-point samplers in measuring respirabe coal dust; the wearing of the samplers by someone moving about a mine does not contribute significantly to the variation in measurements made with these instruments.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the research of the past sixteen years on three distinct methods of probing into solid rock. The first method is to use radar of the appropriate frequency. The second method is to use sonar. The third method is of recent vintage and uses techniques of nonlinear sonar also known as parametric sonar. The first two concepts, that of radar and sonar, are common to most people. Very few have heard of nonlinear sonar. Each of the probing techniques were investigated in order to overcome deficiencies in the former technique. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. It should be emphasized that all of these techniques for probing (or seeing) into rock are used in mines, and generally speaking not from the surface. Only in very special cases, such as certain very dry parts of Egypt or Peru, or, for example, the surface of the moon, will these probing techniques work from the surface. The reason for the development of these probing techniques has been to alert miners to possible hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards may be (1) old (unknown) boreholes connected with high pressure water zones above, (2) fractures that might connect to the Gulf of Mexico above the mine, (3) water-filled fractures that threaten the safety of miners, or (4) the discovery of dry faults ahead that can disrupt the planning of future operations.

Vibration and air blast noise from blasting were evaluated during a research program sponsored by the US Bureau of Mines. Blast variables were studied wing small scale model (SCM) tests to evaluate specific variables as well as interactive effects, followed by experiments with production blasts at the surface coal mines. Experimental data showed that the primary variables affecting the ground vibration amplitude are the charge weight per delay and the length of delay interval. Blast variables having a significant effect on the overpressure amplitude include the charge weight per delay, the length of delay, burden and spacing, stemming amount and type, direction of initiation, charge depth, and amount of detonating cord and cover.

No mineral resources were identified during the investigation of the White Cloud-Boulder RARE II area. Only a few claims have been located in the area and only two workings were found. However, there has been considerable exploration and mining activity near the RARE II area. Sand and gravel resources are abundant but similar deposits occur closer to market areas. There are no known coal, oil, or gas deposits. Most of the RARE II area is underlain by volcanic rocks. The likeliest host rocks for metallic minerals are the metasedimentary rocks exposed in the south part of the area; there is potential for zinc and silver resources at a prospect in that part. Traces of scheelite and powellite were observed in the Kent Peak-Ryan Peak area along hair-line fractures in calcareous country rock. While no significant concentrations of the minerals were found, their presence, a northwest alignment of prospects with similar deposits, and an abundance of dikes near the deposits, suggest that the intrusive system (Summit Creek stock) exposed near the head of Little Fall Creek may extend to the northwest under the RARE II area.

This Bureau of Mines report has been prepared to provide a means whereby mineworkers without specific geologic training can recognize and record the existence of potentially hazardous geologic features encountered in coal mines. Each geologic feature described in this report has been implicated in roof failure. Through the recording of the observations of mineworkers, based on this report, a geologic map of mine workings and the associated ground control problems can be compiled. From such maps, the trends of changes and features can be determined and projected ahead of mining. The face crew can be alerted to a potential problem and what to look for as the face is advanced.

This report presents the results of in-mine studies to determine the severity of dust sources in conventional mining operations. Three underground coal mines were surveyed using gravimetric samplers and GCA RAM-1 continuous dust monitors. Two additional mines were surveyed using only GCA RAM-1 monitors. Data on dust control methods were acquired during the survey, also. The results indicated that cutting/drilling and loading out were the dustiest operations during a conventional mining cycle. Roof bolting, shot firing and product transport were less severe dust sources.

The results of precious metal exploration carried out by Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited over EL 33-137 in the Longwood Range, Southland, are described. Widespread gold and platinum in alluvial deposits on the perimeter of the range and anomalous gold in stream sediments on its southern and south western flanks indicates that the precious metals were probably derived from erosion of the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex.

The persistent requirement for methods and equipment capable of detecting hazardous anomalies in advance of underground mining has led to the development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines of a directional radar probe. The probe operates from boreholes drilled from the surface into the underground region to be mined. The engineering model radar was completed in early 1982 and field demonstration tests were performed in May of that year at a selected coal mine. Preliminary in-situ electromagnetic tests were performed at several candidate coal mines to evaluate the radio-frequency characteristics of the coal. A coal mine in New Mexico was selected on the basis of low EM propagation losses in the coal and the presence of an extensive coal seam displacing fault as a radar target. The borehole radar was operated in two vertical boreholes which intersected the coal seam at approximately 25 and 40 feet from the fault interface. Radar reflections from the coal/ rock interface were detected in both tests. Underground tests in a horizontal borehole in the coal were less successful because of interfering reflections. Additional borehole-to-borehole tests were performed with a separate ground penetrating electromagnetic system to obtain radar range calibration data. The coal was found to be bounded by very lossy roof and floor sandstone and shale while propagation through the coal seam was obtained at distances up to 175 feet between test boreholes. Coal seam continuity was indicated by the hole-to-hole experiments through a section of the seam previously thought to be completely cut off by the fault.

The United States on a daily basis no consumes about 15MM barrels (2.38 x 106m3) of oil; 5MM (0.79 x 106 m3) of this is imported. This compares tai a daily consumption of 18MM (2.86 x 106 m3) in 1980 when we imported 8MM (1.27 x 106 m3). We are producing the 10MM barrels (1.59 x 106 m3 ) of conventional oil at home from what amounts to just 2% of our domestic energy reserves. Nearly 90% of our total domestic energy reserves occurs in solid forms such as coal, oil shale, and tar sands; this is more than enough to meet our needs for the next 100 years. Worldwide, oil shale is second only to coal as a potential source of energy and the U.S. has approximately one-half of the world oil shale reserves which average over 25 gallons per ton (10.43 x 10-2 L/kg). Since the United States has immense oil shale resources, including some of the richest in the world, and since oil shale produces a superior transportation fuel, it would seem logical that the U.S. would be prudently developing this domestic resource. Unfortunately, despite over 50 years of research and a number of false starts, there is not a commercial shale oil industry in place today. There are a number of recurring roadblocks which have hindered private industry's efforts to develop oil shale and we will look at some of these.
