The behaviour of minerals during flotation of a fine-grained pyrite-rich base metal ore was investigated by studying the feeds. concentrate and tailings from every flotation cell in the mill of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corp. Ltd. Bathurst. New Brunswick. The samples were analyzed for Zn, Pb, Cu. Fe, Ag. Sb, Sn, Bi, In. Hg, Mo and As. Mass balances were computed and recoveries of all metals from each cell. from each circuit and from the mill were calculated. The percentages of sphalerite. galena and chalcopyrite occurring as free grains in each product were determined with an image analyser, as were size analyses for free mineral grains and middling particles, and compared with screen analyses. The results show that the behaviour of minerals is defined much better by the recovery of free mineral grains than by the recovery of elements. The recovery of free sphalerite in the zinc circuit is 96 wt %, whereas Zn recovery from the same circuit is 88 wt %. the difference being due to unliberated sphalerite. The recovery of free sphalerite from the mill feed is 88 wt % and Zn 78 wt %. The recovery of free galenafrom the mill feed is 88 wt % and Pb 64 wt %. The recovery of free chalcopyrite is 75 wt % and Cu 45 wt %. Size analyses show that more sphalerite and chalcopyrite can be liberated by regrinding. but the galena is so fine grained that regrinding would not necessarily improve liberation. Silver occurs mainly in tetrahedrite and galena; the main loss in the tailings is due to large (+ 26 um) and small (-1 um} free and unliberated tetrahedrite grains.

Reflections on over ten years experience handling bituminous coal from railroad cars to ground storage and lake vessels. The arrangement of the facilities is described but the basic theme of the discussion is the experience gained and lessons learned from facility operation. The Great Lakes provide the maritime environment for the economical transport of vast quantities of raw materials from their source in the Upper Lakes (the Mesabi Range, for instance) to Lower Lake Ports. Lake Erie, because of its proximity to the steel centers , blossomed with the great ports that now line its southern shore - Toledo, Sandusky, Lorain, Cleveland, Huron, Ashtabula, Conneaut and Erie.

Limestone and Dolomite quarries located near Salto-De-Pirapora, Arroia Grande Gaucho, Conde Francisco and Candioita probably represent the closest, major sources of high quality lime and cement grade carbonate rocks to the major population center of Sao Paulo Brazil. The nearest major city to most of the limestone - dolomite sources is Sorocaba and Palma. All of the mining properties visited during this study are located in the state of Rio Grande Do Sul at approximately -32 degrees south latitude and -52 degrees west longitude, southwest of the major port city of Porto Alegre.

A preliminary study of the performance of a 4-inch Krebs cyclone at near rope conditions and different feed slurry temperatures was completed. Results suggest that temperature influences the x50c size which, in turn, did not depend upon spigot diameter. The bypass correction to a reduced efficiency equation incorporating the concept of a critical size xo was a function of fractional water recovery to underflow and may depend on feed size and feed percent solids. Further experimentation is required to develop an accurate model at near rope conditions.

INTRODUCTION It is a generally recognized obligation of owners and operators of underground mines in the United States to protect the health of miners against the potential carcinogenic effect of airborne alphaemitting radionuclides, in particular the shortlived radioactive daughter-products of 222Rn. In meeting this obligation, a number of strategies are available, and it is largely up to the operator to decide what combination of methods he will use. Because the officially accepted theory of the mechanism by which radon and its short-lived progeny cause cancer of the respiratory system, the objective in controlling this health hazard is to limit as far as possible the inhalation of the three daughter products, 218Po, 214Pb, and 214Bi. (214Po, the fourth nuclide in the chain, is so short-lived that its alpha-decay occurs almost instantaneously after the beta-decay of its parent, 214Bi.) The reasoning in this theory leads to the conclusion that the alphadecay of radon itself causes essentially negligible physiological damage, and that the amount of daughter product activity attributable to decay of radon within the respiratory system is also very small. As every ventilation engineer in this business knows, however, focusing remedial actions exclusively on the daughter products themselves is choosing the hard way, and will probably never lead to effective control of this health hazard in underground mining activities. The reason for this troublesome fact can be seen in Figure 1. Let us say that we have air containing 222Rn and its short-lived daughters in near-equilibrium, a not-uncommon condition in the air of a poorly ventilated underground mine, and that we wish to purify it by removing only the toxic daughter products. If we have been very thorough in our purification efforts, we might expect to achieve a 99% reduction of the Working Level (WL) measurement. Figure 2 allows us to examine closely the early regrowth of WL's in this freshly cleaned air. Within the first five minutes, for instance, the WL's are back to 10% of their full equilibrium value, and ten minutes later the level has more than doubled and is on its way to an almost complete defeat of the clean-up effort by the end of the next hour. It is quite clear from this simple illustration that no matter how effective an air-cleaning system may be if it is directed only at the selective removal of the toxic trio, 218Po, 214Pb and 214Bi, its beneficial effect will be quite temporary. A truly effective attack on the problem must always include methods aimed at the control of the unruly parent, radon. Then, even if its progeny have an inalienable "right to life", their brief lives will not be spent in the miners' lungs. INTRODUCTION Approximately six years ago the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a data acquisition system (DAS) specifically designed for measuring radon levels and other environmental parameters during studies of means to control radiation hazards in underground uranium mines. The DAS system records data in machine readable form using a paper tape punch, which represented the state-of-the-art at that time for a moderate cost output device. However, the use of paper tape as a recording medium for field studies is somewhat unwieldy. Reducing the raw data required either that the tape be shipped to a computer center equipped with a high-speed paper tape reader or that the tape be transmitted at low speed over the telephone lines to a remote computer. Transmitting, at ten characters per second, the data from a 10-channel DAS taking Four readings per hour would require about 30 minutes For each 24-hour day's data. Telephone lines from remote mine sites are often of marginal quality and data errors can be introduced during transmission. Paper tape punches are also prone to occasional punching errors. Both problems make it necessary to carefully check for and correct data errors, a process which is possible because each DAS produces an independent printed data record, but the error checking and correction process can be quite laborious. Aware of recent advances in microcomputer technology which have brought the price of a personal computer down to about the cost of a paper tape punch 5-10 years ago, the Bureau decided to explore the feasibility of using a low-cost personal computer in the field to process DAS data in real time. On behalf of the Bureau, Arthur D. Little, Inc., developed a simple interface circuit which permits an Apple II computer to accept data from one or two DAS units as it is being transmitted to the paper tape punches. Computer software converts each measurement to appropriate engineering units, e.g., radon concentration, Working Levels, air velocity, temperature, or barometric pressure. The computer also calculates 1-hour and 8-hour running averages of all converted data and prints those results as soon as they are obtained on a line printer located at the test site for immediate inspection. After development, the system was used continuously and successfully for a 5-month period at a Utah uranium mine. DAS DESIGN AND MODIFICATION Each of the two USBM data acquisition systems used in this work consists of two separate modules. A multiplexer module located below ground near the measurement transducers acquires signals from each of nine tranducers. Six input channels were devoted to measurements of radon or Working Level. The outputs of those transducers, photomultiplier tubes or G-M tubes, respectively, are digital pulse trains which are accepted directly by the mutliplexer. Three channels were used for environmental parameters--air velocity, temperature, and/or barometric pressure. Each of the environmental tranducers is fitted with dedicated linearizing and voltage-to-frequency conversion circuitry so that the outputs to the multiplexer are also pulse trains having frequencies of one tenth of the value of the measured parameter expressed in the appropriate engineering units. A 100-Hz reference signal was input into the tenth channel for use in monitoring system integrity and performance. All ten pulse trains are then timeseries multiplexed into a signal line for transmission to the above-ground data acquisition module. Above ground, the composite signal is de-multiplexed into ten separate lines, each of which is connected to a digital counter which converts the pulse train to a numerical value. The acquisition of each set of readings is initiated by an adjustable "scan cycle comparator" timer. The acquisition process proceeds in three phases. First, radon and Working Level channels are counted for an extended period of time, typically 5-10 minutes depending on activity, because of the low pulse rates involved. Then the other four channels are counted for ten seconds, and finally, all ten readings, along with the Julian day and time of day are output serially onto paper tape and printed on a strip printer. When the scan cycle comparator reaches its preset time (15-minute cycle times were used in this work), it resets itself, initiates another readout cycle, and begins timing again. The only modification made to the data acquisition systems used in this work was to disconnect the scan cycle comparator in one unit, which became the "slave" and bring in the scan cycle comparator signal from the other unit, the "master", to initiate data acquisition cycles in the slave. Synchronizing the two data acquisitions in this fashion and using two slightly different radon counting times insured that the two systems never attempted to output data to the Apple II at the same time. THE APPLE II COMPUTER The Apple II computer used in this work was equipped with 48 KBytes of semiconductor random access memory (RAM), two floppy diskette drives, a Centronics Model 730 impact matrix printer and a modulator for driving an ordinary color television as a video display device. Magnesite-rich and dolomite-rich ores from the Savage River region of Tasmania are being considered as potential feed material for a commercial process for production of magnesia.Two selected samples have been characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. The materials differ in calcination behaviour, with magnesite decomposing at a significantly lower temperature than dolomite. Calcination conditions have a marked effect on the rate and percentage of magnesium dissolved as the bicarbonate when slurries of the calcine are leached with carbon dioxide. From a process point of view, the feed should have the highest possible magnesite/dolomite ratio, while the optimum calcination conditions are determined by the behaviour of the magnesite component of the feed.From batch calcination tests, it is apparent that the optimum calcination conditions for magnesite-rich ore are a temperature in the vicinity of 700°C and a calcination time of one hour.

The role of governments as a factor in the international non-metallic minerals industry can take several forms. Classically, the government acts as a taxing agent, collecting part of the economic rent on behalf of the country from private-sector mine operators. In addition to its taxation policies, the state can and does provide the practical commercial framework of regulatory and fiscal incentives and restraints that shape the activities of the mining firms. In addition to its functions as an agent of the public interest, the government can choose to take a more direct stake in the mining industry, and has done so in the instance of several industrial minerals that are actively traded on world markets. In this paper, the actions of three governments are reviewed and the consequences of their actions are examined.

Commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailings streams is undergoing study by Syncrude Canada Lrd. When tar sand from an open pit mine is processed and up- graded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be recovered from the extraction circuit and can be upgraded to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. The titanium minerals concentrate consisting of a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, could be utilized as recovered or could be upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the construction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available for utilization.

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements at Thiess Bros Pty Ltd South Blackwater coal mine commenced in 1975.Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioncd in June 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world.The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stabilily of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Anecdotal reports of high rates of congenital malformations and spontaneous abortions at the Shiprock Indian Health Service Hospital in San Juan County, New Mexico prompted an interview survey, obtaining data from families of 26 former uranium miners and 30 controls. Results supported the possibility of increased fetal wastage and congenital malformations. However, definitive conclusions were obviated by methodologic limitations in terms of selection of cases and controls and interviewing technique, as well as very low numbers and lack of statistical significance. The Council of Environmental Quality (1980) published a report which singled out San Juan County, nationally, as having an extra-ordinary high rate of congenital anomalies reported from birth certificates in the years 1973-75. San Juan County is in the northwest corner of New Mexico and includes the northeastern edge of the Navajo Indian Reservation. It has been the site of uranium mining and milling and also of coal mining (Clement Associates, 1980). While much attention has been focused on lung cancer and chronic lung disease as health hazards to uranium miners, virtually no attention has been focused upon possible reproductive effects that may result from exposure to radiation. Could these reports indicate such an additional arena of health effect either on miners or on others living in the vicinity of the mines and mills? The biologic and epidemiologic literature does not lend much support for adverse genetic outcome. The UNSCEAR report (UNSCEAR, 1977) summarizes much of the existing data. For example, on the basis of many animal studies and what has been observed in atom bomb survivers in Japan, it has been estimated that mutation rates resulting from low LET radiation to paternal germ cells would be 60 X 10-6 recessive and 20 X 10-6 dominant mutations per gamete per rad. There would be a five-fold increase in the number of recognizable abortions. The doubling dose for genetic disorders in mice is estimated at 100 rads. The assumption has been that low levels of exposure, such as might be received occupationally from uranium mines and mills or environmentally will produce reproductive effects that would defy distinction from background rates. However, the possibility can not be dismissed. In man, spermatogonia are thought to be three-fold more sensitive than in the mouse. Also, the high LET radiation from alpha particles is as much as 20-fold more effective in inducing changes in meiotic and post meiotic stages of cells, compared with low LET radiation. There is some degree of localization of alpha emitters in testicular tissue after inhalation of radon and radon daughters (Blanchard, R.L. and Moore, J.B., 1971; Pohl, E., 1964). The slopes of doseeffect curves are affected by type radiation and rate of administration. Data on such curves are poorly defined and debated as to whether there may be increased or decreased effect per unit dose at low levels of high LET radiation. Increased rates of aberrations of chromosomes in peripheral lymphocytes cultured from uranium miners have been reported (Brandom, W.F., et al., 1978). At cumulative exposures of 100 working level months (WLM) or less, a range of exposure lower than the limit of current occupational standards, the aberrations were increased more than two-fold. Our interest has led us to pursue the question of reproductive effects along three separate paths of inquiry: studies of the secondary sex ratio, cytogenetic study of human sperm, and studies of rates of congenital anomalies. I will present the thrust of our findings, most of which remain preliminary, comment on their interpretation and limitations, and indicate directions needed for future research. The secondary sex ratio is the ratio of males to females at birth. In the U.S., the ratio averages around 1.05. Ratios in blacks are somewhat lower (1.025) than in whites (1.053). For American Indians, the data are less definite. Values from Oklahoma and California are similar to whites (1.05). Southwestern tribes have, as we shall see, varying levels. The theoretical effects on sex ratio resulting from irradiation of the zygote are based on the principles of sex-linked genetics, including differential effects of lethal dominant and recessive mutations on the sex chromosomes, complicated by possible non-disjunctional events. Observations have done little to clarify, confirm or refute the theories. The sex ratio of progeny of survivers of the atomic bomb showed little change (Schull, W.J., Otake, M., and Neel, J.V., 1981). Observations in children of uranium miners having been inconsistent. Most frequently cited is a study of miners in Czechoslovakia (Müller, C., Razicka, L., and Bakstein, J., 1967). Compared with children born to miners prior to the start of mining, the sex ratios of children born after the start of mining were decreased -statistically significant after correcting for birth order. The ratios in first-born children were, before the start of mining, 1.118, and, after the start of mining, .713. In the interview survey at Shiprock, the sex ratio in families of non-miners was 1.03, and in families of miners it was 0.73 (p < .05). Dr. Alan Goodman at the University of New Mexico has studied trends in the sex ratio in the general population in New Mexico and Arizona with particular reference to counties in the Four Corners area and the Navajo Indian Reservation, areas where uranium mining has been active_ His findings (unpublished) are as follows: (1) Beginning in the early 1950&apos;s, there has been a modest, but persistant and statistically significant decline in the secondary sex ratio for the state of New Mexico compared with the U.S., a decline that roughly parallels the emergence of uranium mining in the Grants mineral belt in northwestern New Mexico. (2) Data available for the 11 years since 1969 show that among the five counties with ratios significantly lower than the state

The planning and development of new coal mines is requiring the increased use of geologic, geologic engineering and hydrogeologic investigations. This is caused in part by the fact that new mines must deal with less favorable conditions than existing mines as well as higher costs of development and in part by the dictates of regulatory authority. High costs of new mines require greater reliability of geologic assessment using best available geotechnical and geophysical methods and technology. Although the increased cost of additional subsurface data is significant, the more important factor may be the impact on project lead time.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a process for recovering chromium and other metals from superalloy scrap. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted to test a complex flowsheet utilizing a wide range of extractive metallurgical operations. The novel basis for the process is the fonnation of a sulfide matte in which chromium is concentrated in a discrete chromium sulfide phase. Mineral processing and hydrometallurgical procedures are used to separate chromium sulfide from the other matte constituents. The products of the process are a chromium-nickel alloy suitable for reuse in the superalloy industry, electrolytic nickel, electrolytic cobalt, and iron-molybdenum residue. Recovery of the principal elements contained in the scrap is chromium--93 percent, nickel--99 percent, cobalt--96 percent, and molybdenum--92 percent.

Energy consumption and distribution in aluminum production, conservation accomplishments, and future goals are presented. Electrolysis and electrode manufacture show the greatest promise for major improvements. Means are proposed for reducing waste heat generation in smelting and for conserving energy in anode manufacture by furnace design and substitution of other materials for petroleum coke. Hall-Heroult Process modifications, alternative designs, and the Alcoa Smelting Process are discussed as energy savers. Scrap recycling, more use of aluminum in transportation, and the installation of offshore smelters in less developed countries are shown to be additional means of coping with possible energy dislocations.

A 32-channel warning system for high working level, fan operation, and airlock-doors has been constructed. The working level monitors have a microcomputer for accumulating the pulses, converting to working level, and triggering an alarm at a variable set point and at one working level. The system also detects when underground fans lose power or air doors are open. The system can detect changes in air velocity which indicate surface fan failures or changes in the ventilation system. Using this alarm system, the ventilation engineer will be alerted prior to excessive levels of radon daughters being reached so corrective action can be taken.

INTRODUCTION Underground mines in many parts of the world have elevated levels of short-lived 222Rn daughters. Lung cancer implicating exposure to short-lived daughters is documented in the U.S., Czechoslovakia, Canada, Sweden, the U.K., France and Newfoundland. An elevated lung cancer mortality (in excess of that expected) has been observed when cumulative exposure to alpha emitting short-lived 222Rn daughters (218Po, 214pb 214Bi 214Po) is greater than about 60 working level months (WLM) [1]/ (Hewett, D. 1979). This is equal to an absorbed alpha dose of about 30 rads to shallow basal cells in bronchial epithelium. Long-lived alpha emitters are also present in underground mines, and especially uranium mines because of airborne particulates containing uranium. The 238U parent of this primordial series supports other long-lived emitters 234U 230Th, 226Ra, Pb(210Po) which are in some degree of radioactive equilibrium with the parent 238U. Airborne particulates can be present due to drilling on the face of the ore body as well as in all parts of the mine through resuspension from the mine floor. Particles from 1 µm to about 5 µm penetrate the nose with reasonable efficiency and deposit primarily in the tracheobronchial tree. They are removed by ciliary motion (the bronchial escalator) but deliver an alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium during clearance in the same manner as short-lived 222Rn daughters. It is the purpose of this work to indicate the alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium delivered by the long-lived emitters 234, 238U. The dose calculations reported here based upon a few measured values of these isotopes in air in uranium mines in New Mexico and Colorado. MEASURED 234, 238U IN URANIUM MINE ATMOSPHERES In 1979, the U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook a study to evaluate personal monitors to be worn by miners to measure short-lived 222Rn daughters. One of these devices sampled air at 100 cm3/min through a 13 mm glass fiber filter, with a small pump worn on the belt. Alpha particles emitted by 222Rn daughters on the filter were measured continuously by a thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chip. Each monitor was worn by a miner for a 170 hour working month and approximately one cubic meter of air was sampled during this period. Six different mines were selected for the test in New Mexico and Colorado. The mines used either wet or dry drilling methods. Miners in each location were equipped with the personal monitors. Subsequent to their use in evaluating the shortlived daughters, Dr. Robert Droullard of the Bureau generously gave us these filter samples along with a few blank glass fiber filters from the same box of filters used in the study so that long-lived emitters present in these mine atmospheres could be determined radiochemically. Four of the samples have been run for 234, 238U. The radiochemical procedure for uranium is adapted from USDOE, Environmental Measurements Laboratory Manual (Harley, J.H., 1976). Briefly, the samples were placed in platinum crucibles, spiked with 232U tracer and pretreated with nitric and hydrofluoric acid. The residue was fused with potassium fluoride to transpose to pyrosulfate. The fused cake was dissolved in 7 [N] hydrochloric acid and the solution passed through an anion exchange column to isolate uranium. Iron was removed using mercury cathode electrolysis. Uranium was electrodeposited onto platinum dies and counted using solid-state alpha spectrometry. The samples from each type of mine (wet and dry) were analyzed. The samples in the "wet" mine in New Mexico were selected on the basis of the original TLD measurement because they were near the maximum occupational standard for radon daughters. These samples should also represent upper limits to longlived activity encountered, since they were obtained at drilling operations on the face of the ore body. Samples collected in the "dry" mine in Colorado were pot associated with a particular location in the mine and should be representative of a month long overall exposure in many locations and operations. In an attempt to develop technology to use domestic resources in place of imported bauxita, the Bureau of Mines investigated sulfurous acid leaching to extract alumina from kaolin. The process consists of leaching the calcined kaolin with a 30 wt-pct S02 solution at 60° C and 160 psig for 17 hours, fil¬tering the leach slurry, precipitating monobasic aluminum sulfite from the filtrate at 110° C and 60 psig, a& decomposing the sulfite in the spent liq¬uor at 150° C and 55 psig to produce crude alumina. Purification of the crude alumina was accomplished using a modified Bayer process. Results from closed-circuit tests employing the sulfurous acid process showed that overall extraction of alumina from kaolin was 67 pct. Production of 1 ton of alumina would require 3.6 tons of calcined kaolin, 0.7 ton of sul¬fur dioxide, and 8.4 tons of water. After purification by a modified Bayer process, the alumina product contained the following; impurities, expressed in weight-percent: Fa203, 0.009; S, 3.6; Si02, 0.07; Ti02, 0.002; K20, 0.017; and P205, 0.03.

During the decade of the 1970&apos;s, a new emphasis was placed on assuring a safe and healthful workplace for all American workers. Much of the basis for this national effort was federal legislation: the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (amended from the 1969 Coal Mine Act). One of the agencies involved in this protection effort is the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In fulfilling its mandates under the 1970 and 1977 Acts, NIOSH conducts research, experiments, and demonstrations to support and stimulate advancements in health and safety practices. Priorities for NIOSH research are established primarily through congressional mandates, requests from the Department of Labor, needs as defined by NIOSH researchers, and surveillance information. Emphasis is placed on research in the areas of toxicology, industrial hygiene, physical and chemical sciences, physiology, ergonomics, engineering, psychology (behavior and motivation), and epidemiology (industry-wide studies). The framework of the current Institute program to identify, evaluate, and control occupational hazards includes activities in surveillance, research, evaluation, and training. These activities are planned and evaluated through a system that coordinates the efforts of eight research and scientific divisions. Each division develops projects to address program areas that have been identified by NIOSH management as having highest priority. In surveillance programs, the objectives are to identify substances and agents found in a representative sample of workplaces and to collect and evaluate information on rates of disease and injury in occupational groups. Information is also collected on occupational safety and health programs implemented by industry. Estimates of worker exposures and the potential for adverse health effects are considered in setting priorities for further investigations. A related activity, which also serves to provide technical assistance to industry, is NIOSH&apos;s Health Hazard Evaluation program. On-site investigations of workplaces are made in response to worker, employer, or government agency requests. Both industrial hygiene and medical examinations are conducted, and the results contribute to identifying new problems and evaluating their significance which may have public health implications beyond the particular worksites that are investigated. Field and laboratory research projects are performed to meet several objectives: - Characterize the working environment by evaluating current and past exposure levels for workers who are included in epidemiological or medical investigations. - Develop epidemiological information to define the association between the substance or agent under investigation and the acute and chronic health effects on workers. - Determine through animal studies the parameters of an association between exposure and effect. - Investigate the etiology of disease. - Develop sampling and analytical instruments and techniques and demonstrate their application for measuring toxic materials in the workplace. - Formulate sampling strategies that will accurately and precisely indicate exposure levels. - Develop medical procedures to prevent disease and to detect the presence of disease and early indicators of disease. - Assess the technology for control of exposures, including engineering and administrative techniques, personal protective equipment, and work practices. Presently, the research program is focused on reproductive effects, neurotoxic effects, injury/trauma, lung disorders, cutaneous disorders, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, stress-related disorders, effects of physical agents, digestive disorders, and renal and other organic disorders. In studying these issues, priorities are determined by the seriousness of possible adverse health effects resulting from occupational exposures, the feasibility of studying existing records or obtaining new data, and the size of the population which is potentially affected. Where there is low level of suspicion concerning adverse health effects or where an occupational disease occurs in a variety of industrial environments, investigations are limited to gross analyses of health effects such as review of mortality patterns. In such studies, the industrial populations selected are those for which existing data resources can be utilized. Such data consists of records of occupational exposures or health status which have been maintained by the employer, the union, or Government agencies. Where a review of the available information suggests that serious health hazards exist and the existing data resources are inadequate for quantifying the relationship between the specific biological response and type and degree of exposure, prospective studies are initiated. Information derived from such research is essential for the development of sound criteria for control of industrial exposures to noxious agents. Other input to the criteria documentation process comes from searching and evaluating the literature. Criteria documents contain the recommendation of an environmental limit where information is available to support it, as well as the recommendation of work practice controls, medical evaluation, information for workers to recognize and avoid the hazard, and identification of specific research gaps. In some cases, during the criteria document preparation, gaps in knowledge are found which necessitate further research before an occupational standard can be recommended.

"The paper discusses coal research in relation to the special needs of Western Canada, with its large resources of lignite and subbituminous coals. Research programs are presented under the following headings: Coal Liquefaction, Pyrolysis, Fluidized-Bed Technology, Underground Coal Gasification and Supporting Investigations. Typical processes are presented and their relevance to Canadian coals is described. The longterm plan of the Alberta Research Council for coal research and the steps taken for its implementation are discussed. Finally, some innovative concepts arising from basic research in coal chemistry are discussed.Canada&apos;s Coal ResourcesCanada is richly endowed with coal reserves. With estimated ultimate reserves of 600 billion tons in O.76-m (2.5-ft) thick seams under less than 762 m (2500 ft) of overburden, Canada rank s fourth after the USSR, the USA and Chinatu (see Table I) . Canada&apos;s reserves are incompletely explored and estimates are constantly being upgraded. Preliminary information from deeper test-hole logs suggest that similar , if not larger, tonnages occur at depths greater than 762 m (2500 ft).The types of Canadian coals and their regional Distribution(2) is shown in Figure 2. Alberta&apos;s subbituminous Plains coal represents about 70% of estimated national reserves. A large portion of the coal can be mined at relatively low cost by surface mining techniques, and it is currently being used exclusively for power generation in conventional thermal plants. This coal, however , also represents a large potential .source of liquid fuels which could equal or exceed that of oilsands and heavy oil. Table 3 compares Federal Government estimates for resources and reserves of fossil fuels in Canada and their recoverable oil content or equivalent.A conservation estimate of only the reserves of thermal coal represents an oil equivalent of 27.6 billion barrels , which equals the recoverable reserves of oil-sand bitumen and heavy oil. A more realistic estimate is probably several times this amount. Although coal can be converted to many other end products, such as fuel gas and synthesis gas for hydrogen and ammonia production, liquid fuels remain the most desirable product mainly because they can be transported more cheaply over long distances and their high energy density makes them uniquely suitable as fuels for transport and agriculture."

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service is entering the seventh year of monitoring caves for the presence of radon and radon daughter products. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the radiation monitoring program at Mammoth Cave National Park, and to present some of the results of this program. Mammoth Cave National Park completed five years of collecting data on May 1, 1981: although Mammoth Cave encompasses approximately 361 km of underground passageways, this paper will concentrate on only a 2.2 km section of the cave known as the Historic Tour. Included in this paper is a discussion of the methods the Nations Park Service uses to protect employees from exposure to alpha radiation. MONITORING METHODS The National Park Service monitors cave atmospheres utilizing the procedures provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration in their Radiation Monitoring Training Manual (Anon., 1976). This procedure is described as the Kusnetz Method (Kusnetz, 1956) of radon daughter monitoring. Due to the length of the tours at Mammoth Cave, it has been determined to be the most practical procedure. The Historic Tour is a 2.2 km (1.4 mile) loop through passageways ranging in size from 18 m high by 12 m wide, to 0.9 m high by 0.6 m wide. Seven five minute walking samples were taken for this cave tour by drawing at least 10 1 of air through a 25 mm fiberglass filter utilizing a Monitaire Sampler Pump. The radon daughter concentration levels were determined using an alpha scintillation counter to measure the alpha activity on the filter paper. The Monitaire Sampler Pump was calibrated each day prior to monitoring the cave tour and the scintillation counter was calibrated by procedures described by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (Beckman, 1975) at six month intervals. Guidelines established by the National Park Service and approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration require weekly sampling when the average working level exceeds 0.30 (NPS-14, 1980). A working level is an atmospheric concentration of radon (Rn-222) daughters which will deliver 1.3 x 10 5 MeV of alpha energy per liter of air in decaying through Ra C&apos; (Po-214). The Historic Tour has continually exceeded the 0.30 working level average and has been monitored weekly. Generally, only radon daughter working level data has been collected on the Historic Tour due to limited personnel. However, other special measurements of the uncombined fractions of radon daughters with wire screens, tsivoglou method for radon daughter sampling (Thomas modification, 1970), and thoron daughter monitoring. These special measurements have not been routine due to time limitations involved in radon daughter sampling of other occupied portions of the cave. SUMMARY OF DATA The Historic Tour has been the most consistantly monitored tour since elevated levels of alpha radiation were found to exist at Mammoth. Cave. It is also the only natural entrance to the main sections of the cave and provided an opportunity to study man made actions upon the natural entrance. For these reasons the Historic Tour was isolated for study. Beginning October 10, 1977, and ending November 20, 1977, a pilot project was undertaken involving the Historic Tour and the practice of covering the natural entrance to this tour with sheet metal in the winter months. The purpose was to study radiation levels on the Historice Tour while the covers were on and off the natural entrance. In this pilot project, comparisons were made with incast air with covers on and off the entrance, and outcast air with covers on and off the entrance. TABLE 1 Incast air Mean W.L. Decreased 5% Covers off. . . . 1.40 W.L. when covers on The natural entrance was artificially covered in the winter months (Yarborough, 1978) to protect the visitor from the extremely cold incast air, in the first four years of monitoring. The data in Table 1, illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, shows that this action increased the radon daughter working levels on the Historic Tour by 54% when the covers were on the entrance and the airflow was incast. While the air flow was outcast at the natural entrance, it made little difference as to whether the entrance was closed or open. Some interesting findings were observed when
