INTRODTUCTION The use of spiral concentrators for processing fine coal particles is an old idea that has recently gained acceptance in the 11.S. coal industry. It was not onti1 the Australian Minerals Industry developed a spiral concentrator specifically for separating coal from ash in the latter 1970's and early 1980's that spiral concentrators were seriously considered as viable equipment for processing fine coal. The Wright Coal Spiral was introduced in 1980, the Mineral Deposits Limited Mark 10 Coal Spiral was introduced in 1982, and the Vickers Wyong Coal Spiral was introduced in the latter part of 1984. Each spiral design was different and utilized constant profile troughs, constant pitch troughs, compound profile troughs, and various splitter arrangements. Mineral Deposits Limited has combined the best features of the compound profile trough and constant pitch trough with critically-placed splitters to develop the MDL LD4 spiral concentrator which is a truly efficient coal washing spiral. This spiral concentrator was introduced into the U.S. Coal Industry in 1987. Recently, Mineral Engineering Technology of the United Kingdom and Multotec of South Africa have introduced their own coal spiral designs. Spiral concentrators were first installed in fine coal processing circuits in the Australian, South African, and Canadian Coal Industries in the early 1980's and in the U.S. Coal Industry in 1985. SPIRAL CONCENTRATOR SEPARATION PROCESS The separation process that occurs within the spiral concentrator trough is very complex, as it is a combination of three gravity separation processes. When the coal slurry first enters the spiral trough, each coal and ash particle and the water is subjected to centrifugal forces. These forces cause the water, light coal particles, fine heavy ash particles, and medium middlings particles to the outer vertical portion of the spiral trough. The coarse ash particles and the coarse middling particles remain on the inside of the spiral trough. The center or transitional area of the trough contains a mixture of middlings particles and near-gravity material that is present in the slurry, as shown in Figure 1. At the same time the coal and ash particles are suhjected to centrifugal forces, the trough design (both profile and pitch) causes the particles to be subjected to flowing film and stratified bed separations. The combination of these three separations, whose efficiency is dictated by the spiral troogh design, will effect the separation of the lighter coal particles from the heavier ash and middlings particles. As the slurry flows down the spiral, the profile and pitch design of the trough will counteract the centrifugal forces on the fine, heavy ash particles and fine middlings particles and cause them to migrate from the vertical portion of the trough to the center or inner portion of the trough. At the same time, any heavy particles trapped in the transitional area of the trough will be forced to migrate to the inner edge of the trough and any coal particles will be forced to migrate to the outer edge of the trough. SPIRAL SPLI'TTEP ARRANGEMENT The critical placement of splitters along the inner edge of the trough for removal of the heavy ash particles as the slurry flows down the trough further enhances the separation of the coal particles. At the bottom of the spiral trough are product splitters arranged to make a final separation of the slurry stream into clean coal, middlings, and refuse products.

Alternative procedures for the recovery of gold from old sand dumps are discussed, with emphasis on the use of heap leaching. The modification of material to improve its permeability prior to heap leaching is not currently receiving much attention in South Africa. The channeling of solutions through heaps and the high consumption of reagents sometimes ascribed to heap leaching can, as shown by the results described in this paper, be lessened by desliming of the sand prior to heap leaching and the treatment of the resulting slimes fraction by agitation leaching and carbon-in-pulp. This combined procedure results in a higher overal recovery of gold. Alternatively, the sand can be heap-leached as it is after agglomeration with lime and cement, which improves the mixing and neutralization of the material, as well as lessening the probability of channeling.

This paper gives a technical review of the history, occurrence, mining, and metallurgy of iron in South Africa. The reserves of iron ore worldwide and in South Africa are reviewed, and potential new developments In the iron-and-steel industry in South Africa are examined. The paper concludes that the exploitation of lower-grade iron deposits will probably supplement the reserves of high-grade hematite ore in the distant future, and that, accepting this scenario. South Africa will be well placed to provide iron ore for its expected internal steel requirements, as well as supplying quality Iron ore for the export market.

Although column flotation is known to be more effective than conventional flotation for cleaning fine coal, little attention has been paid to the considerable sulfur removal potential of this process. Whereas conventional flotation can only with difficulty remove pyritic sulfur from coal, flotation columns can make this separation readily due to their greater selectivity. This project has used a modified flotation column to remove pyrite from fine coal. This column has been shown to be capable of removing 70 to 85 percent of the pyritic sulfur from coal while recovering 80 to 85 percent of the total calorific value. However, the remaining pyrite is too finely disseminated to be readily removed by physical means. Currently, experimentation is in progress using bacterially-catalyzed dissolution of pyrite in acid solution to remove ultrafine pyrite and aid in the removal of coarser pyrite inclusions.

"Recent advances in microbiology have made the application of biotechnology to metallurgical processes possible. Hydrometallurgy stands to gain the cost from the use of microorganisms, as they are useful for both dissolution aids and for removing metals from solution. The development of genetic engineering techniques promises to greatly increase the importance of bioprocessing of metals and minerals by the year 2000.In this paper, the basic effects of microorganisms on metallurgical processes are reviewed, and the applications which are currently either in use or near being used are presented. Representative data collected at Michigan Technological University is also given.IntroductionMany hydrometallurgical operations exist which are thermodynamically possible, but which are industrially impractical due to slow kinetics, high reagent costs, or the need for a highly corrosive environment. However, recent discoveries in microbiology indicate that in many cases these difficulties can be reduced greatly by the action of bacteria and other microorganisms (1-8).A major advantage of using living organisms in hydrometallurgy is that once the culture is established the microorganisms produce their own reagents either from the material being processed or from low-cost nutrient supplements. They thus allow extremely complex chemical reactions to be carried out at reasonable cost. The major drawback of using microorganisms is their inability to tolerate extremely high temperatures, excessive concentrations of toxic metals, or very highly acidic, alkaline, or corrosive conditions. However, the complex reactions which bacteria make possible frequently eliminate the need for such extreme conditions. Also, in recent years a number of organisms have been isolated from such exotic environments as hot springs and deep-ocean vents which can tolerate temperatures higher than was previously thought possible for any organism, and can catalyze a number of metallurgically important reactions (8)."

A longwall chain pillar is comprised of two distinct zones, a solid elastic core enclosed by an exterior of failed or yielded coal. For the purpose of pillar design, the ability to delineate the extent of pillar yielding and correlate the yielding with the applied pillar load is of fundamental importance. A study was initiated on a longwall section of a West Virginia mine to: (1) delineate the location of the elastic core-yield zone boundary, (2) examine the stress distribution within the pillar, and (3) quantify pillar stability as the longwall face retreated toward an instrumented pillar. A US Bureau of Mines sonic velocity probe was used in conjunction with vibrating wire stress meters to define the elastic core-yield zone boundary and the migration of vertical stress toward the pillar core. The extent of the yield zone as determined by field results is compared with the extent of the failed zone as predicted using a series of equations developed by Wilson.

In an attempt to increase underground productivity Coal and Allied has introduced a continuous haulage unit into it's Moonee colliery. A second unit is planned for Nallarah colliery in the near future. Both systems will be roof mounted or monorail type and manufactured by Joy Manufacturing Pty Ltd. The introduction of these machines is seen as a logical step in improving the efficiency of mining with continuous miners. This could be in conjunction with longwall mining in the rapid development of gate roads or, as in the case with these machines, as conventional development and extraction units. The advantages of the continuous haulage system are; Relatively low cost. 2 Ability to obtain high productivity in irregular or disturbed coal reserves not suitable for longwall mining. 3 Increased worker safety with the elimination of shuttle cars and the majority of trailing cables. 4 Increased productivity independent of soft or difficult floor conditions. At the time of writing the Moonee installation is 6 months old. The Nallarah machine is due for delivery March 1988.

A major diamond mining operation in South Africa is faced with the unique problem of recovering usable water from the fine tailings stream. The kimberlite ore hoisted is washed prior to crushing in order to remove adhered fine clay particles. These particles form a colloidally stable suspension from which it has not been possible to recover clear recycle water. Research has been conducted on this problem for more than 20 years and it is only recently that a breakthrough has been achieved. This paper describes the work done to gain an understanding of the suspension stability and which subsequently led to the testing of a process at pilot-plant Scale.

Improve the performance of waterjet nozzles used for water-jet-assisted cutting to optimize rock cutting efficiency. Approach The performance of a longwall shearer equipped for water-jet-assisted cutting was evaluated during an earlier study (Tech News No. 277). Waterjet nozzles were used to direct the solid streams of water that impacted the rock near the tip bits. The maximum water pressure that could be delivered to the nozzles was about 6,000 psi. Due to the "break up" of the solid stream of water, some of this pressure was lost before the water reached the rock. The pressure could have been increased by moving the nozzle closer to the bit tip but) moving the nozzle too close increases the possibility of damage to the nozzle. Study Results A test apparatus was built to measure water pressure at the location of water jet impact (see illustration). The target, a tungsten carbide plate with a 0.013 inch diameter orifice, was placed at the location of water jet impact. A pressure transducer, used to monitor impact water pressure, was positioned under the plate. Water pressure at the nozzle was maintained at 6,000 psi. The distance between the nozzle and target was varied from 2 to 5 inches.

All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 370 to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 170 sulfur.

Mineral zonation studies were conducted on hydrothermal vents of two hot spot volcanoes. One study site is located within the Axial Caldera of the axial hot spot volcano of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The young high-temperature hydrothermal vent field consisting of two polymetallic sulfide chimneys, five meters high, located at 130°01.5'W, 45°56.5'N, along a fault complex at the base of the southwestern wall of Axial Caldera was sampled during four ALVIN dives in 1983. Temperatures of up to 270°C were measured within the orifice of one of the chimneys, which was then broken off and recovered with the submersible. Both black and white "smoke" was observed to be emanating from the one chimney sampled. The high-temperature chimney extends directly from a field of broken lobate lavas which are located at a water depth of 1,550 meters, about 200 meters east of the caldera wall. The chimney makes one of the shallowest active high-temperature vents studied to date. The vent is surrounded by clumps of vestimentiferan worms and is located within an elongate field of red-colored iron smectite blankets and chimneys. The low-temperature field forms a ribbon 150 meters wide, extending for about 1,300 meters at the base of the wall. Chemical analyses of the hydrothermal deposits ranging from the polymetallic sulfides of the chimney to the outer zones of the low-temperature field show a range of elemental assemblages consistent with temperature zonation around the vent. "The CONSTEEL Process introduces a new concept in electric steelmaking by continuously feeding-preheating-melting and refining ferrous scrap or direct reduced iron. The process uses the furnace off-gas and fuel to preheat the scrap in a specially designed preheater. Thermal incineration of the flue gas reduces the carbon monoxide level to the more stringent requirements. Hot water or steam production from heat of flue gas is optional. The tap-to-tap time is set to match the cycle of the caster. The steel is treated via ladle metallurgy. The environment inside and outside of the steelplant is improved by decreasing levels of noise and hazardous emissions. Energy consumption decreases and disturbance to the electric network is eliminated. A CONSTEEL prototype was tested at Nucor Steel, Darlington, SC. A greenfield project is in the completion stage at the Florida Steel plant of Charlotte, NC, USA. The Process PhilosophyThe philosophy of the CONSTEEL Process is not solely to enhance efficiency; this was just a natural result of the change from a batch to a continuous practice. The primary objective in development was four-fold:1) 100% process control2) Rational use of available energy3) Improved environment inside and outside the plant4) Stability of energy input from the power systemIt was to make electric steelmaking more a science than an art and amenable to modern automation.The Basic Concept of CONSTEELThe concept of the process is shown in figure and includes basically a continuous feeding system, a preheater and a melting - refining furnace. A pre-established amount of heat is introduced into the scrap while traveling through the preheater using the sensible and chemical heat contained in the furnace off-gas and additional fuel. Melting-refining is carried out in the electric furnace. Slag formers, slag foaming additions and oxygen are injected to refine the melted steel continuously, to minimize the refractory erosion, to shield the arc, thus optimizing the transfer to the metal bath of the heat generated in the arc, to keep the bath homogeneous in composition and temperature and to produce carbon monoxide (CO) which is fuel for the preheater."

Semi-autogenous, (SAG), milling operations can realize substantial Increases in mill throughput by removing and crushing critical size, slow grinding, material from the SAG mill. Full-scale plant testwork showed that modifying the Kidston SAG/ball circuit to a semi-autogenous-ball milling-crushing (SABC) circuit would increase plant throughput by 25 to 30%. The methods used to determine the value of the SABC circuit and the design of the circuit are discussed.

According to the analysis of 126 mine gushing records and the relevant water supply and hydrogeologic condition, the gush can be classified into eight types;cave type,collapse -column. type, subterranean stream type, fault zone type, contact zone type, upper plate type, bottom heaving type and surface water invasion type. The formulae for counting the peak discharge of gushing point are further put forward in this paper.

INTRODUCTION With the world media full of predictions that the price of gold will quadruple in three years (Maybury, R.J., 1988), and with financial forecasters and strategists touting opportunities to make 400% in gold (Skousen, M., 1988), explorationists and entrepreneurs are scurrying to find enough gold to feed the global gold fever created. At the same time, gold deposits in the United States and other developed and intermediate countries are becoming less attractive because of environmental restrictions, radical reductions in tax incentives, and depleting reserves, causing people in the mining industry to begin looking at opportunities for foreign investment in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs). Meanwhile, LDCs are responding with chamber-of-commerce aplomb in marketing their opportunities. In the face of all this frenzy and hype, targeting gold mining concessions in LDCs for foreign investment may be done more objectively by employing a systematic approach. For this paper the SHOP rating system (Corbin, R.K., 1987), which considers factors of the LDC's stability, hospitability, ore occurrence, and profitability potential is used. The result is that a tiny banana-growing republic in Central America, first discovered by Columbus and named the "Rich Coast'' because of the many gold adornments worn by its Indians, has been rediscovered and emerges as a classic LDC gold target.

The classical slope analysis and a statistical technique were used in order to determine the iron complexes formed in the organic phase during the extraction of Fe(III) from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene. Equilibrium constants for the extraction based on these complexes were also calculated. The complexes determined were of the general form (Fe(OH)3-nRn?sHR)x' where n varied between 1 and 2.5 and s between 0 and 3, and both were found to be decreasing as the iron loading in the organic phase increased. Values of 1,2 and 3 were generally found for x, indicating that the complexes were monomers, dimers and trimers.
