The beneficiation of fine coal has been the major problem facing the coal preparation engineer in recent years. The influence of clay slime, particle size and reagent type are but a few of the many factors that affect the recovery of fine coal. Laboratory test work has indicated that substantial increases in recovery could be achieved by improvements in technology in all these areas. Unfortunately, in most cases this technology has not carried through to the operating plants.

Unprotected uranium mill tailings impoundments can pose a significant risk to nearby inhabitants and the surrounding environment in the event of a prolonged or catastrophic release of contaminants contained in the tailings. As a result of this potential, reclamation plans for such facilities must include engineering designs to protect against disruption of the tailings and the potential release of radioactive materials. The goals for such engineering designs should be to provide overall site stability for long-term periods with no need for planned ongoing maintenance and to provide a repository for the tailings that will not place a burden on future generations. Although the goal is to provide a maintenance-free system that does not require monitoring, it must be recognized that some period of surveillance would be reasonable. The surveillance period could be relatively short and only needs to assure with reasonable confidence that the reclamation scheme that was implemented is functioning adequately. An investigation was conducted by Nelson, Volpe, Wardwell, Schumm and Staub (1983) entitled Design Considerations for Long-Term Stabilization of Uranium Mill Tailings Impoundments (NUREG/CR-3397). This report assesses the degree of confidence with which long-term reclamation plans can be expected to remain effective over specific periods of time, and to assess the additional effort required to extend the design period from one long-term period to a longer one. This paper presents a summary of that investigation and discusses some of the important conclusions.

The northern margin of the Arunta Block is characterized by a metasedimentary and volcanic sequence of lower metamorphic grade than that of the central Arunta Block. Whereas the Harts Ranges have granulite to amphibolite metamor- phic grades, the northern margin only reached greenschist to lower amphibolite facies. Most of the high grade area of the central Arunta Block appears to be unprospective, but the lower grade marginal fringe contains most mineral pros- pects to name a few: Barrow Creek, Molyhill and the Jervois Mine. Numerous smaller prospects occur in this marginal zone. Four major lithostratigraphic units can be recognized in the Jervois Mine area: 1. Gneissic Suite consisting of granitic and rhyolitic gneisses which are characterized by a distinct intersection lineation. 2. Metasedimentary Suite of cordierite- biotite schists and chlorite-biotite schists. 3. Mine Sequence, consisting of spotted schists with andalusite and cordierite, quartz- sericite-feldspar schists with distinct rhyo- litic remnants and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists which contain the lode horizons:

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 RC was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique and weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure errosion it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Erosive wear rates are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

It is estimated that through 1975, there were 1.69x109 m2 (418 000 acres) of urban land threatened by potential subsidence due to mining with a value of over $12 billion (19;3 dollars; USBM, 1979). With increased coal production to meet the energy needs of the nation, both these figures may be expected to increase. Hence greater attention to controlling surface damage due to subsidence is merited. In fact, the Surface `lining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) (Public Law 95-87) mandates that underground coal mining operators "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, ..." The term "subsidence," as used in this paper, implies the total phenomenon of surface effects associated with the mining of minerals, and not only vertical displacement of the surface as is sometimes inferred in the literature.

Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), Section 516 (b), requires the underground coal mining operator to "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence cawing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable we of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology wed requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner.. . ." Congress also directed the Secretary of the Interior to promulgate regulations to implement the law. As a result, the control of subsidence from underground coal mining to minimize surface damage has become the mandate of a federal law. This paper discusses the mechanics of subsidence and the effects of subsidence on ground features. This paper also summarizes some measures used to minimize the possibility of damage to structures as a result of subsidence due to underground coal mining.

The United States Steel Mining Company, Inc., (USM) Lynch District, operated the No. 37 Mine in the Harlan coal seam, Harlan County, Kentucky, from 19'2 until its sale to Arch of Kentucky in 1984. Overburden depth varied from 400 to 2000 feet and mining height varied from 8 to 12 feet. In 1981, because of deep overburden, high seam height, and previous pillar stability problems, U. S. Steel Research and the Lynch Mining District entered into a joint project to measure longwall pillar stress. Eight gateroad pillars were instrumented with a total of 86 vibrating-wire stressmeters under overburden depths varying from 500 to 1550 feet. Stress-increase measurements were taken during: (1) pillar development, (2) retreat of longwall panel No. 1, and (3) retreat of longwall panel No. 2. Total average pillar stress was approximately three times the pre-mining stress with total stress at an individual meter reading 5.5 times the pre-mining stress. When maximum, measured average pillar stress was compared to pillar strength predicted by several popular pillar design methods, the pillars were found to be stronger than predicted. This paper will summarize the pillar instrumentation program and present the results. Stress distributions, average measured pillar stress, and comparison of measured pillar stress to predicted pillar strength by several design methods will be given.

Observations of faults in mines, at outcrops, and in the laboratory lead to the conclusion that the displacement d of a fault increases irregularly but monotonically with the thickness t of its associated fault gouge and breccia, not including adjacent undisplaced jointed rock. The general trend of data points has a slope d/t of about 100. (The correlation coefficient of a logarithmic regression line is r = 0.94.) The rather wide scatter of the points can be accounted for by inaccuracies in measurement of d and t, and by variation in the conditions at faulting of confining pressure, rock type, water pressure, and deformation history. Limestone is an exception to the relation. Until the data can be corrected and refined, the relation should be used only qualitatively for estimating displacement of ore bodies in mines. The suggested relation is based on observations of 48 steeply- dipping normal and reverse faults and nine small flat-dipping thrust faults, with displacement less than 5 km (3 miles). It does not apply to large strike-slip and low-angle overthrust faults because their large displacements are poorly determined and their breccia thicknesses are widely variable.

Computer oriented simulation techniques can be effective in the design and analysis of complex mining systems. In fact, a number of computer software products are available for mine systems simulation. While providing a useful tool for the investigation of mine planning problems, the availability of graphic output was limited or non-existent. Computer graphics is a natural extension of mine simulation methods and provides a more dramatic level of understanding and interface with an engineer. With today's high cost of venture development, the need for an easy to use but complete systems model which includes the major elements of mine planning with an interactive graphics interface has never been more apparent. In this paper, the underlying philosophy of design of an interactive interface to a complete surface mining simulation model is described. The basic structures of the surface mining system and the simulation model are discussed. The methods and algorithms used to implement the various subsystems are presented. Practical considerations of the design of displays and user interaction are illustrated, especially as they apply to the application of the package by a mining engineer. A simple example is provided to demonstrate the concepts embodied in the model and to show how a simulation is built from mine data.

The sulphation roast-leach process for complex sulphides results in phase changes due to roasting and leaching. The phases in the calcine, and in the neutral and hot acid leach residues were identified and their degree of liberation determined in order to design and Interpret separation tests on the residues. The hot acid leach residue was composed of hematite, silica, and lead sulphate with some associated silver. Magnetic separation was selected as the process for producing a lead concentrate, as the non-magnetic product. Separation was limited by -1 pm hematite reporting to the product, and hematite/lead sulphate agglomerates reporting to the magnetics.

Warrego copper ore characteristically contains 0.05-0.2% bismuth, which on upgrading produces a concentrate of approximately 1.3% bismuth. Early smelting of this concentrate (1973) was accomplished in a flash furnace (eliminating 92% of the bismuth in the con- centrate) and Top Blown Rotary Convertors (eliminating 85% of the bismuth in the matte). However 1.3% bismuth was considered the max- imLun bismuth level that could be treated. Geological evidence indicated that the bismuth level in~the copper ore would increase and that the bismuth level in the Warrego ore would be 0.3-0.7% bismuth. Treating these ores would produce a copper concentrate with bismuth levels far in excess of those accept- able to the smelter and still produce low bismuth content blister (limit 0.03% bismuth).

About 20 percent of world gold production has been contributed by gold deposits in Archaean greenstone belts, of which ca 2100 tonnes of gold has been produced from Archaean greenstone belts in Western Australia (Phillips, in press). These deposits are, therefore, important exploration targets and an under-standing of their nature and genesis can help to formulate exploration strategies and delineate potential targets.A literature survey of Archaean granitoid-greenstone terrains indicates that a wide variety of lithologies host gold deposits. The major part of production from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, has come from mafic volcanics andintrusives (70% of production),with significant contributions from BIF-hosted ores (15%) and low production from sediments, felsic volcanics, porphyry intrusives and granitoids (Groves et al., in press). The federal government's declining role in funding research has created a critical dollar gap for university departments of mining engineering. Industry is not unaffected by the drought: not only is research lagging, but hard- pressed universities are going to the private sector for funding. This paper's thesis is not that mining companies should shower universities with philanthropy, but that a quid pro quo ought to be exacted: a research partnership should be contracted on a pay-as-you-go basis. A model exists at The University of Alabama (albeit not in mining) that may lend itself to adoption by our industry.

This report describes the development of training materials for the operators of underground mining equipment in the underground metal and nonmetal mining industry. The objective was to determine the effectiveness and acceptability of these training materials and to provide the validated training materials to the industry. Ten modules were developed, based on industry need according to accident frequency, accident severity and exposure to the equipment. The final modules were an average of 20 minutes in length and used slides with synchronized narration on cassette tapes. Testing materials are included for use by the mines.

GEOTECHNICAL OBJECTIVES OF UCG PROGRAM Underground coal gasification (UCG) is one of several in situ extraction technologies for utilizing deep, otherwise unmineable coal. This technology involves the injection of air or oxygen into the target coal seam, ignition of the coal and recovery of product gases. Geotechnical characteristics of the coal and enclosing rock strata strongly influence the success of this Process. The flame front follows the coal cleats (Hill, 1979), and cleating and bedding control the manner in which coal collapses into the cavity, thereby affecting recovery efficiency (Ramirez and others, 1982). Moreover, coal seams typically behave as fracture dominated aquifers in which cleat orientations govern subsequent contaminant dispersal. For these reasons, the Anaconda Minerals Co. undertook a detailed study of fracturing within the Wyodak-Anderson Coal in the eastern Powder River Basin (PRB) near its Rocky Hill UCG test site (Fig. 1). STRESS HISTORY AND FRACTURING IN THE POWDER RIVER BASIN Vertical jointing, or cleating, in coals may arise from shrinkage shortly after deposition under low confining pressures, or later in time, soon after burial but after the coalification process is well advanced (Ting, 1977). There is much evidence to support the formation of cleating after coalification (e.g. Hawkes and Mellor, 1970; McCulloch and others, 1974), which suggests that the stress state existing at that time strongly influences cleat formation. McCulloch and others (1974) argue that the typically better developed face cleat forms parallel to the plane containing [ol] and [o2]. Where the relation between cleats and stess has been studied (McCulloch and others, 1974; Stone and Snoeberger, 1977; Ward, 1977; Kulander and Dean, 1978), the highly systematic face cleat strongly parallels the [o1] direction. Stone and Snoeberger (1977) report face and butt cleat measurements of N70E and N29W for the Felix Coals 220 m stratigraphically above the Wyodak at the Hoe Creek UCG site (Fig. 1). Structural trends also indicate the past state of stress in the PRB. Glaze and Keller (1963) suggest that the NE-SW regional compression during the late Permian formed major N-S fold lines and basement magnetic anomalies. Mapel (1959) describes folds having N60W and N30W rends in the northern PRB, as well as a large normal fault trending northeast. Glass (1976) also describes normal faults trending northeast. Railroad and blast induced vibrations were measured in the vicinity of the proposed Big Bend Cutoff. Peak horizontal and vertical particle velocity relations were developed using least squares regression analysis. The dominant frequencies of these data are in the range of 30 to 50 hz. Therefore, allowable charge weight per 30 msec delay curves were generated for buildings (2 in./sec) and unlined tunnels (8 in./sec). A blasting contour map is presented for this site.

Knowing that I was required to make four appearances, and not wanting to be too repetitious, I wrote a rather long speech of which I will deliver various sections at different places, with a common introduction. An engineering procedure for designing the minimum separation between solution mined caverns in bedded salt deposit is described. The procedure is based on data obtained by in-situ and laboratory test methods. The formulae utilize the concept that salt rock under high pressure in a deep salt rock deposit would behave as a perfectly plastic substance, and that the active opening surrounding a typical cavern could be described by a circular ellipsoid. The paper describes the calculations required for the safe design of a solution mined salt cavern field.

Introduction United States Steel Corporation's, Texas Uranium Operations operates in-situ mines located approximately 70 miles north of Corpus Christi near the town of George West in Live Oak County, Texas. In 1977, Texas Uranium Operations became the operating entity for the Burns Ranch mines 100% United States Steel ownership and also operates the Clay West mines a 50150 joint venture of United States Steel Corporation and N M Uranium, Inc. Until mid-1982, Texas Uranium operated eight (8) satellites where uranium was captured on resin and two central plants where the loaded resin was eluted, acidized, precipitated and dried to yellowcake. At present, the Clay West Central Plant is operating, as are four (4) satellite plants in a mode designed to optimize results while depleting remaining reserves. United States Steel's Texas Uranium Operations, as have some other uranium producers, managed to continue successful production during the plunge to the recent floor price of $17. Despite the fact that United States Steel does not intend to continue as--a uranium producer beyond the life of its present reserves, we naturally hope the recent trend to the pre- sent price of $24 will continue to increase.
