"In recent years, there has become a growing interest toward a better understanding of balance rope behaviour. With this in mind, the auth or will present a comprehensive summary of field experience, as well as conclusions. In presenting this overview, it is the intent to stimulate further interest as well as provide a framework from which further in-depth investigation can be initiated.Topics which will be covered include rope cores, lubrication practices, loop dividers, rope failures, etc.IntroductionThe first friction hoist was designed in Belgium in J862 by Lemielle. However, it was not until 1877 when Carl Frederich Koepe installed a friction winder sheave at the Hanover Colliery in Germany, that the design was given serious consideration. The winder consisted of a motor-powered sheave over which a single rope was installed, and the end s attached to two conveyance s. Beneath the conveyances a rope was connected, designed to reduce the chance of slip. This was the first balance rope.This earl y mod el is a far cry from the modern tower or ground mounted Koepe winders employed throughout the mining industry today. There have been vast improvements in all aspects of the Koepe winders. One such improvement is in the balance ropes used. This particular area will be concentrated on, with emphasis on selection, maintenance and field experience.SelectionThe sale purpose o f a balance rope is to counter the head rope weight. Obviously then, in selection o f balance ropes, weight is of primary concern. Usually the head and balance ropes are equal in weight. However, sometimes balance ropes which are 5 to 10070 heavier than the head ropes are employed. These reduce horsepower demands during peak acceleration periods, and assist in overcoming inertia during retardation periods. As well, it is sometimes preferred to reduce the balance rope weight, in order to compensate for the eventual weight buildup of lubricant, dirt and debris."

Difficulties with the screening of large volumes of pulp to remove plus 600 /km material before the adsorption circuit and to retain plus 20-mesh carbon in the adsorption contactors have largely been solved, with the result that the plant can now handle its design throughput. The elution and electrowinning processes have been modified to simplify the circuit, but the regeneration of carbon remains unsatisfactory. The production of fine carbon in the plant can lead to increased gold losses, and this carbon must be collected and treated. Collection methods for fine carbon and some indications of the quantity of the carbon and its gold values are given.

This paper outlines a well proven and highly successful approach for eliminating many of the problem and frustrations often experienced in plant startup. The approach was developed over a period of 25 years during which some 90 plants were commissioned. This paper discusses startup from the contractor’s perspective and highlights the requirement for detailed startup planning, careful coordination during the project final construction phase, and thorough checkout of equipment prior to introduction of feed. Performance of these services has demonstrated a valuable opportunity exists for the contractor to assist in the training of the plant operating personnel.

The distribution and properties of interseam and overburden rocks in coal mines is largely controlled by conditions at the time of their original deposition. Within the developed areas of the Bowen Basin, depositional environments range from fluvial through upper and lower detaic, to marginal marine and intertidal facies. Each environment has a characteristic association of lithologies with specific range of properties, and each lithology has a characteristic geometry. Fragmentation problems are associated with ancient sand channel systems, where the difficulties encountered depend on the dimension and shape of channels, their continuity, orientation to mining face and associated sediment bodies formed as levees or interdistributary muds. Stability problems in spoil, pit floor and highwalls are usually associated with mudstones which contain swelling clays derived from the original Permian volcanic source. This clay problem is aggravated by deep Tertiary weathering. Case studies are presented of detailed analyses and prediction of geomechanical properties on a mine site scale. These are used in investigating or forecasting fragmentation and stability hazards. The studies incorporate detailed field mapping, bore log data and computer data processing. They allow the development of detailed depositional models for specific interseam intervals within mines. As areas of depositional environment are identified they allow the construction of maps of similar mining conditions and the determination of the most suitable mining techniques.

Vibrations from thirty-seven blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations reported in the U.S. Bureau of Mines studies. Regulations based on USBM data could then be too conservative or lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

Access to geoscience reference informa- tion including mining and mineral processing has increased considerably in the last five years in Australia. This has been due principally to the use of computer-based information storage and retrieval systems. The main reference data base for the mineral and petroleum industries and disciplines in Australia is the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS), cooperatively developed and coordinated by the Australian Mineral Foundation (AMF). AESIS is created on the CSIRO computing network (CSIRONET) which has a CYBER 76 host computer located at the CSIRO Division of Computing Research (DCR) at Canberra. Data entry was until recently carried out by AMF using a dedicated line through the Adelaide CSIRONET node to the CYBER 76 interactive system. Data entry is now done directly at the AMF on a DEC PDP 11/44 mini computer that is also a host work station on CSIRONET. Data collection via magnetic tape media input from other computer-based systems is under development. The software used for data entry and management of the data base was developed by CSIRO CILES Systems Development Group. For public interactive online use the AESIS data base is transferred by tape to AUSINET - the Australian information net- work run by ACI Computer Services, Melbourne, where the data base is converted to a form suitable for the IBM STAIRS software. CSIRO facilities at DCR Canberra are used to produce computer type-set camera ready products and output in microform, on magnetic tape or as graphic display. This paper discusses the use of computer modeling, data manipulation, and mapping of three multi-seam coal properties in the Appalachian coal basin. Each case history represents a slightly different application of computer usage for estimation of reserves and planning surface mine sequencing. This practical use of computers demonstrates the suitability of data processing for normal evaluation of coal properties.

A process control strategy has been developed for the lead circuit of the lead- zinc concentrator at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC), Broken Hill, Australia. The general aims of the control system were to produce a final concentrate with a zinc content below a certain limit and, at the same time, obtain the highest lead recovery possible. As presently arranged the system involves control of the cleaner feed mass flaw by cleaner diverter tray manipulation and control of xanthate addition based on per cent lead in feed. Generally this approach works well but for abnormal conditions such as very high or law pH the system requires further improvement.

This paper presents the case history of a comprehensive geotechnical investigation for the Crosstown Transport Facility, a 10,880 m long, 3.2 m diameter pressure tunnel proposed for construction in San Francisco, California. The proposed tunnel would be part of the City and County of San Francisco's Clean Water Program, and its purpose would be to convey stormwater and sewage from the east side of the City to the Pacific Ocean. Tunneling conditions were defined by surface geologic mapping, 94 exploratory borings, surface and borehole geophysics, aquifer testing, Goodman Jack testing, pressuremeter testing, and laboratory testing. Through the use of advanced coring techniques and a strictly controlled drilling fluid system, core recovery averaged 90 percent in the sheared and fractured rock of the Franciscan Formation. As a result, over 1,400 linear meters of rock core was recovered and is available for examination.

Until now, only the range of typical construction projects which are repeated over and over during the life of a coal mine have been discussed. This chapter looks at underground construction projects which occur only once or twice during the life of any given mine and are major construction projects in both time and cost. These projects usually require the services of an outside engineering and construction firm with hands- on experience in design installation. Because of this involvement with engineering and construction firms (EIC), the role of the construction engineer will change from one of actively de- signing and directing tasks to one of planning, inspection, and quality control. To reflect this role change in the discussions, the focus of this chapter will be changed to a broad overview of project participation. Of course, the projects under consideration in this chapter could easily fill more than one book on their design and installation. In addition, major construction projects are extremely site specific, requiring months of data collection about site geology, physical conditions, and potential excavation and construction requirements. Therefore, no attempt shall be made to discuss any detailed construction aspects as was done in earlier chapters. The purpose of this chapter is to present the fundamental concerns of a staff engineer or supervisor. This engineer does not make the decisions on choosing the EIC firm, but assists and interacts with their project team to accomplish the goals set forth by higher management. The construction topics to be reviewed fall into three main categories. The first category is highlighted by the installation of a main surge bin; the second is typified by the construction of an underground shop; and the third category encompasses special projects such as rotary dumps, crusher stations, and foremen's offices. These categories highlight the differences between degrees of mine responsibilities for project completion. The first topic is usually a turnkey project by an E/C firm for a given mine. The second topic represents the leading role of the mine in the project with a contractor as a support service or equipment supplier only. The third topic, special projects, is an example of a joint venture-between a contractor (leading partner) and mine management. These roles can change with any given project, but the changes in management responsibilities for the construction engineer can be nicely illustrated for the purposes of this text. The first step toward constructing major mine projects is to analyze the mine which influence their design. From the mine management standpoint, these parameters should reflect the role the mine will play in the project construction. In other words, what is the nature of the proposed mine environment and what are the material, labor, and time requirements needed to assist or direct the chosen engineering and construction firm? Answering these questions requires some basic project planning and cost estimation work. Here, only a general treatment is necessary, since detailed discussions of these topics will follow in Chapters 8 and 10. For those persons interested in the role of the EIC contractor, I suggest beginning by reviewing the article by Beall, "The Role of an Engineering and Construction Contractor," presented in the October 1980 issue of Mining Engineering magazine.

During 1981 the Florida phosphate industry produced more than 43 million metric tons of phosphate rock - about one-third of the entire world production and also generated nearly an equal amount of waste clay and waste clay-sized product that requires dewatering and disposal. The material balance of solids and water for a typical Florida phosphate mining operation is shown in Figure 1. Historically, the industry has impounded clay waste (about 60% below ground and 40% above ground) in earthen dams, often as large as 800 acres and occasionally greater than 60 ft. high. The dams have served the triple purpose of: 1. Dewatering initial 3% solid waste clay for process water re-use. 2. A reservoir system to minimize water discharge from the mining area and to capture and store rainwater thus minimizing deep well pumping requirements. 3. The ultimate densification and storage of waste clay.

Highly variable milling properties within a geologically complex porphyry copper deposit owned by Kennecott Corporation in Nevada made it necessary to estimate the copper recovery and concentrate grade in areas where actual test data was lacking. The estimation was made by first determining the relationships between the desired metallurgical properties and the ore's petrology (i.e. copper mineral type, rock type and copper grade). This relationship was then combined with the already estimated rock type, mineral type and copper grade data in the mineral block model to predict the milling properties.

Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95% of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978. "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuster. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high &lids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95OC (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate-about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60.62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. The conclusion-let's mine heavy oil and tar sands.

It is anticipated that the monitoring system employed at West Cliff Colliery will be expanded to allow total and instantaneous monitoring of roadway environmental Conditions.

When a fire or explosion occurs underground the ventilation maybe disrupted and the atmos- phere may become oxygen deficient and filled with noxious and flammable gases. The basic survival technique for:any man alive underground is to escape and this may be achieved and rescue workers may enter such atmospheres to carry out rescue work underground by using appropriate breathing apparatus.

Thirty mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil, water and mineral samples from the Groote Eylandt Mining Company mine site were approximately three times more effective in biodegrading manganese dioxide (34± 18 mg Mn++/1/day) than sixteen purified strains (11 ± 10 mg Mn++/1/day) isolated from the primary enrichment cultures. Two pure bacterial genera identified as a Pseudomonad and a Bacillus, with an excess MnOz and nutrient, were able to dissolve 106 mg Mn++/litre/day in mixed culture compared with 29 mg Mn++/litre/day when grown separately.

High-energy product permanent-magnet materials of rare-earth cobalt alloys are being used in applications where space or weight are at a premium cost. New applications like friction-free bearings are also made possible. However, such magnet materials have not been commercially used in magnetic separators until now due to the high cost for the overall magnetic flux generation relative to commonly used ceramic magnets or AlNiCo magnets. The design of the new high-intensity permanent- magnet roll separator (PERMROLL) takes advantage of the unique properties of rare-earth cobalt magnets rather than just substituting for conventional magnet materials now in use for magnetic separators. Hence, the new generation of high-intensity magnetic-roll separators has some unusual characteristics that make known magnetic separation applications more economically attractive, and even expands the magnetic separation technology area to include applications for which no other feasible methods are presently known.

Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific-indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1979 at 11.3 Mt (12.5 million st) valued at $534 million, averaging $49.19 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, ground limestone and dolomite, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface texture, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. All of these same minerals have additional significant uses based on their chemical composition or other characteristics. References will be found in other use chapters and summarized in commodity chapters. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses. Use of Mineral Fillers Archaeologists have found that more than 5000 years ago, bitumen used for mortar and waterproofing contained mineral contaminants that acted as fillers. Since that time man has added mineral products to compounds to improve certain characteristics. Perhaps the most common objective of filler usage is reduction of cost of the end product. Certainly the inclusion of a filler that costs 2¢ per 0.45 kg (lb) will reduce the cost of a plastic product whose resin costs 50¢ per 0.45 kg (lb). But the decision to use a specific filler is not that simple. It may "soak up" binder, making a compound more viscous and perhaps preventing its flow into a mold as an injection molding compound, but similarly will give good anti-sag characteristics to putty, caulking compound, or undercoating. Pre-cambrian scheelite deposits in Northeastern Brazil are widespread in a high grade metamorphic terrain. Previously these deposits had been interpreted as contact-metasomatic. In this paper, a volcanigenic model is invoked based on the volcanic setting (proximal to distal) and the absence of associated felsic intrusives and spatially associated metasomatic skarns. The tungsten was introduced into sediments by volcanic- exhalative processes and subsequently remobilized and further concentrated by heat and metamorphis fluids associated with high-grade metamorphism and migmitization. An alternative syngenetic - diagenetic model is discussed which requires the transport of tungsten by heteropoly acids and deposition of the tungsten as a function of Eh and Ph conditions and different clastic depositional environments. While such stratabound tungsten deposits are considered rare in North America, the hypotheses developed in this paper may open new areas for exploration.
